1944 World Series results
1944 World Series: New York Yankees vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
Results Game 1, October 4th, 1944, Forbes Field, Pittsburgh World Series Game 1 Victory for Wensloff and Pittsburgh The Pittsburgh Pirates started the World Series in style, downing the visiting New York Yankees at Forbes Field by a score of 5-4 to stake an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Pirates right-hander Butch Wensloff threw 9.0 innings of 4-hit ball. Roy Cullenbine, who finished 4th in the NL in on-base percentage with .388 in 1944, chipped in a 2-run home run for Pittsburgh in the bottom of the fifth. For the game, the right fielder had 2 hits in 3 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 2 runs batted in. "We lost," New York manager Spec Harkness said later. "We'll deal with it. The series isn't over." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh. Pirates lead series 1-0 Game 2, October 5th, 1944, Forbes Field, Pittsburgh New York Win Evens Series at 1 Behind a bravura effort from starter Kirby Higbe, the New York Yankees topped the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 14-0 and got their first win in the 1944 World Series. Higbe threw 9.0 innings of shutout ball for the Yankees. The win moves New York into a 1-1 tie with Pittsburgh. New York starter Kirby Higbe pitched like a boss. The 5-foot-11 right-hander allowed no runs on 2 hits over 9 innings. "Our bats were on fire," said Higbe. The next game is set to be played on October 7th, 1944 at Yankee Stadium in New York. Series tied 1-1 Game 3, October 7th, 1944, Yankee Stadium, New York Pirates Hammered by Rosar, Drop Game 3 to Yankees When the games really matter, the New York Yankees put on their best show, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates by a final score of 4-3. Buddy Rosar was 4-4 with a home run, 3 singles, and a walk, while adding 3 RBIs and scoring once. New York now leads Pittsburgh 2-1 in the best-of-7 affair. The clutch hit was provided by Goody Rosen. He delivered a walk-off run-scoring single off Monk Dubiel in the bottom of the 11th. "Things broke our way today and that's great," Yankees manager Spec Harkness said. "It's important, though, to stay focused and not pat yourself on the back too much. We aren't done yet." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Yankee Stadium in New York. Yankees lead series 2-1 Game 4, October 8th, 1944, Yankee Stadium, New York Almost There: New York On Cusp of World Series Triumph After 15-0 Win The New York Yankees did not need a superhuman effort from starter Marius Russo, not with their offense scoring runs at will. They got one, regardless, as the left-hander shut out the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 15-0 Yankees win. Russo threw 7.2 innings of shutout ball as New York took a 3-1 lead in the best-of-7 series. New York starter Marius Russo was a master of his craft. The left-hander allowed no runs on 4 hits over 7.2 innings. Russo said afterward that his team has grown over the course of the season, adding: "It feels good when a plan comes together." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Yankee Stadium in New York. Yankees lead series 3-1 Game 5, October 9th, 1944, Yankee Stadium, New York Yankees Take Title It was a hard-fought battle for both teams to make it this far. But as the saying goes, "to the victors go the spoils." For the victorious New York Yankees, that meant the Major League Baseball World Series trophy. The Yankees took a 11-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Yankee Stadium, winning their 3rd championship after taking the series 4-1. "We've got grit," said Yankees catcher Buddy Rosar, who was named MVP of the series. "We know how to win when we have to." The new titleholders completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the AL and a 89-65 record. Yankees win series 4-1 World Series MVP: C Buddy Rosar (New York Yankees) |
