MY LIFE IN 1957
EC'S Lookin' For Heaven in '57 Today is the day the Lord has made... so let's rejoice and be glad in it. So let's put a big smile on our faces and a lotta love in our hearts and enjoy the Lord's Day... today and every day. ![]() Question: Did you hear about the Cajun bass player who played so far behind the beat his band fired him? He was so depressed he threw himself behind a train. Right cheer, EC thought he would share one of my favorite Cajun songs... it's by Rod Bernard, a swamp pop singer, famed for the classic 1959 hit "This Should Go On Forever"... he released "Colinda" in 1960... it was not a national hit, but was a regional hit in New Orleans and Looziana... to this day "Colinda" is often heard at Cajun dances and weddings in Acadiana (Lafayette, Crowley, New Iberia, Houma, Thibodaux, Abbeville, Breaux Bridge and all of Sout Looziana). So listen up all you buckaroos and little darlin's, too... Danderoo is gonna bless your pretty little peapickin' ears with Rod Bernard and his song about a pretty little Cajun girl and her over-protective mama, who didn't want the Cajun guys messin' around with her daughter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYq8k8myi-A Last edited by Eugene Church; 02-20-2022 at 12:34 AM. |

Monday, June 3, 1957 5TH PLACE ZIPS UPSET 1ST PLACE MARINERS IN SI SUPREME PLAY DELTA STARS CUT MYSTIC LEAD TO 1 GAME You can't win 'em all... top-ranked Mystic lost only its second game of the South Island Supreme League season... they were shot down in a shootout 13-10 Sunday at Zebulon... the Delta Stars chopped down the Pelham Oaks 10-5 and narrowed the Mariners' lead to one game with 2 games left to be played... 3rd place St. Dominic missed a chance to tighten the league standings and improve their pennant chances... the Saints lost an extra-inning battle 7-6 to the Kofa Kings in 12 innings... Bar Harbor skimmed by the St. Pete Pelicans 6-5 in 11 innings... and the St. Luke's Place Orioles continued their second-half surge with a 12-10 victory over last place Guedon... the Orioles are flying high with 5 straight wins. MY LIFE IN 1957
EC'S Lookin' for Heaven in '57 Boola Boola, Boola Boola. Never heard that cheer at a football game, did you? But maybe it got your attention. EC was an avid fan of the Alabama Crimson Tide in the miserable 50s... boy, was the Tide bad in those years... the Ole Miss Rebels under Johnny Vaught were a powerhouse... LSU was mediocre... and Tulane was terrible... the Greenies decided to de-emphasize sports and stress academics... hmm... that's a novel idea for a place of learning. Athletes should be "Students" first, right?... makes sense to me... a university is a place of higher education ... not a farm club for the NFL Yep, EC is an idealist and a purist. The Auburn Tigers were ranked #1 in the Associated Press Poll, but they were not allowed to play in the Sugar Bowl,... seems they had paid several football players $500 each. What?... they cheated even way back then?... yep, they did not play by the rules... shame, shame, shame. The more things change, the more they stay the same... colleges are still cheating worst than ever these days. EC used to have his peapickin' ears glued to the Alabama broadcasts every Saturday afternoon listening Maury Farrell and John Forney doing the coverage... yep, I mean to tell you EC suffered pitifully and painfully every Saturday... the Crimson Tide was awful. With no MLB right now covid everywhere... things must really be boring... you folks must be mighty hard up for entertainment.
Yesterday you folks set records for the South Island League and the Islandian Pro Alliance. The South Island League record viewers for one day was 233. Yesterday there were 313 peeks at the South Island League. The IPA record for viewers in one day was 562. Yesterday, lordy mercy, there were 767 peeks. My Oh My! How About That! Special thanks to all of you. Last edited by Eugene Church; 02-23-2022 at 08:09 PM. |

EC's Lookin' for Heaven in '57 Here's John Forney calling a Johnny Musso TD in the Alabama-USC game in the opening game of the 1971 season. Southern Cal was ranked #5... Alabama was #16... the Tide won 17-10. 'Bama finished #4 in the AP poll after they were embarrassed by #1 Nebraska in the Orange Bowl 38-6. Alabama entered the Orange Bowl Game rated #2... Nebraska was #1... and they certainly proved it. Monday, June 3, 1957 MERAUX CLINCHES SPOT IN SUPREME LEAGUE, NEEDS ONE WIN TO TAKE SI SECONDARY CROWN, ANDERSON STILL HAS A CHANCE TO TIE TIGERS FOR TOP SPOT It was huge weekend win for the first place Meraux Tigers (9-1)... they blanked the Cherrywood Stouts 4-0 and captured a spot in the South Island Supreme League next season... the worst the Tigers can finish in the South Island Secondary League is second place... all they need to win the pennant is one more victory or one more loss by the runner-up Anderson Ravens (7-3). Anderson pounded the Parkland Perfectos 12-5 this past weekend... three clubs are still in the fight to get promoted to the Supreme League... Billings, Littleville and New Yerby are all 6-4 and can catch Anderson... Billings beat Columbia in a shocker 4-3... New Yerby shut out the Delacroix Cubs 4-0... but Littleville fell to the Braxton Bruins 4-3... in the remaining game this Sunday Gull Lake demolished the Grin Hill Smileys 10-5. |
