Happy (belated) 4th to you, too.

By 2-1 and 3-2, it's now 2-0 Yankees in my 1981 ALCS. That's five in a row my Rangers have lost to these guys. Sigh.

(Meanwhile, Jerry Reuss threw a 2-hitter at Stade Olympique to give the Dodgers a Game 1 upset. Why can't we do that?)

Bill Kelly's story is a familiar one. After a strong season at AA Nashville in 1979, he was only workmanlike at AAA Indianapolis in 1980. So not surprising that he wasn't called up, but he could have been. After that, he slid back in his 2nd year with Indy and then struggled at Omaha in 1982 after being swapped to the Royals organization. In the game, he's getting pounded in Cincinnati's bullpen…but at least he's getting pounded on a major-league contract!

Bill Kelly... I started with the lower picture from the Omaha days but wanted to get to a picture like the red uniformed one above. The direct import of the face filled with chaw was entertaining enough that I've posted it as a "before". Even making his cheeks more gaunt to remove the bloating and widening the mouth kept him very Neandertal-like. So reluctantly, I added a texture pack and tried to get something more akin to that top photo. Here's the best I could do and I'll be using it my game, and as picky as I am, that's not bad

Pat McCauley played the game from age 22 to 40 but with only 37 games in the Bigs. The starting photo was from when we broke-in (1893) so he aged up a bit on my screenshots but still a much better likeness imho. The original photo was "noisy" so I smoothed it out before starting the fg. Missed some shadow under his bottom lip but still looks enough like a shadow, I let it be.

Irvin "Kaiser" Wilhelm pitched nine seasons in the major leagues during a career that spanned more than two decades. After a stint in the Federal League from 1914-15, he - little known fact - became Emperor of Prussia where his aggressive foreign policy was a chief cause of WWI. After devastating defeats on the Western Front and Prussia's elimination of the monarchy, he returned to baseball, pitching 4 games for the Phillies in 1921. Who knew? ;P ;P

I had some color issues with Jack but I think it's the best it's going to be. Tough one to find pictures for. I took the one from the OOTP photopack to work with. Here's the before that was in the game, my first effort, and then a texture application to mitigate the color issues which represents the fg file attached... So, without further ado, here's Jack D Hardy...

In the words of Matt Broderick, 2B for Brooklyn for all of 2 games in 1903, "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it..."

Used the same face as it was made from same photo I had, colorized it and gave some of his chin back...

Thanks for Kelly. Sorry though I am to see the chaw go, lol.

I misread the ID at first, though. I don't know who William Kelly "006" is, but he could use some anti-vampire treatment, though.

Travel day in the ALCS, while the Dodgers pulled another upset. Fernando couldn't hold a 4-0 lead, but they pulled it out with 4 in the 17th, 5 innings of scoreless work by Burt Hooton sealing the win. Playing second base the last half of the game was Greg Schultz (1-2, 2BB) who IRL had some .880+ seasons at AAA Albuquerque but not until after the Lopes-for-Sax switch had blocked his path to Chavez Ravine. Here, he's in the bigs while Sax is still in San Antonio.

George Yeager played six seasons in the majors, mostly at catcher. During his time with the Beaneaters, George backed-up the team's regular catcher, the infamous Marty Bergen.

I started over on George's face. I think we used the same photo as I too had the left-side light and the right-side reflecting shadows.

Amazin' - funny you should ask about Greg Schultz. I traded for him and Orel Hershiser (who will forever be a reliever in this sim) and he is now my top IF call-up when anyone gets injured. Was on my own list to do.

The pics are tough but I think I got a .fg that I'll use. The eye black and mustache are tricky to work with but that was the best face to use. Really, unless you are Will Clark - whose facegen should always have eye black imo - it can risk looking like mascara running. But I think I'm happy with it.

Amazin', I checked on "kelly-006wil" and Billy Kelly (with a "y") was indeed looking rough. I colored him since, being a 1912 Pirate, luckymann would get to him next decade anyway. So, a head start on that class...

"One of the famous freaks of the game was the nail on the fence of the Sunday grounds at St. Paul . . . (Frank) Isbell says he was pitching . . . (and a) batter drove a fly (which) stuck on a wire nail . . . practically the same thing happened while Roger Denzer was pitching a game, the ball impaling itself on the same nail . . . Denzer, after the game, procured a hammer and bent the nail and Isbell, in telling the story, always offered to show a bent nail in the fence to prove it." - from the Atlanta Constitution, August 17, 1919

I started over on the same photo that the original was done on. Was easier to make some coloring tweaks on the original before facegening it that way.

Ladies & Gentlemen, bender of ball-impaling nails, Roger Denzer...

Anyway, here's child of the corn, Malachi Kittridge...
I love how Malachi's nickname was "Jebediah". Good to see irony in use in a sporting context.

"Tommy Sheehan played four years in the big leagues. He appeared in one game in 1900 and then came back to play from 1906 to 1908. ... There seems to be some question as to whether Tommy Sheehan was actually 5' 8". In pictures where he is next to another player, he appears to be shorter." - bRef Bullpen wiki

So, figured if they made his life story, given that face, Scorsese directs. But given the height dispute, I have to now think Pesci plays him...

Same file, just colorized and the chin shortened a bit based on the supporting pics...

Definitely a younger Pesci or Pacino.

Hey a FA signing for the Giants to be added if I may - Jesse Stovall (1903-04)

Thanks bud

In 1902 a 25-year-old Indiana-born man named Odie Porter was fresh out of Indiana University and embarking on a career in the major leagues. Luckily for him, Connie Mack‘s Philadelphia A’s came calling. On this date — June 16th — Porter was the starting pitcher in the only big league game he would appear in, throwing a complete-game loss for the eventual AL champs at the third South Side Park in Chicago against the White Sox. In eight innings he gave up 12 hits, 10 runs (only 3 of which were earned), walked 5, struck out 2, and was charged with a balk and a wild pitch. At the dish he was 0-for-3.

While the outing wasn’t what you would call impressive, the A’s still managed to clinch the pennant with an 83-53 record. Porter, however, would never get to redeem his loss. He never appeared in another game, and unfortunately succumbed to a case of pulmonary tuberculosis less than a year later on May 2, 1903.

Used the same image that was there but colorized, straightened and otherwise cleaned it up a bit. Also made it slightly more gaunt to better reflect the lone image of him...

A free agent, eh? Tell the Giants that Jesse Stovall's best year was 1904 with the Tigers with a record of 2-13, or if they are operating under a sabermetric strategy setting, a WAR of -2.5. They should run!

The face looks like the picture on bRef so I just added some color to his face and had him put on his home uniform... btw: I have to think the Tigers were sponsored by a laundry detergent company in 1904. How did they keep those white uniforms looking so white?...

EDIT: I clicked the link you posted below, luckymann. His in-game Stuff is 9, Movement 10 and Control 11... are these 1-100 scales?!?! If so, at least his stamina is 3 so while he'll fail, after he gets tired and fails more, you will be spared any more runs allowed ;-)

For someone named Odie to have not just survived childhood but actually made it all the way to the bigs is an achievement that deserves its due recognition. This upgrade goes some way to doing so.

He just won a POTG Award, our Jess, not bad given his so-so profile and bloodless countenance. He'll be nigh on unstoppable now.
