Cavaliers Update : January 1, 2019

Cavaliers Update:

Injuries:
Iván Pineda Suffers Setback: You have just been informed by your team trainer that Iván Pineda has suffered a setback in his recovery from a torn flexor tendon in his elbow. It will now take at least 2-3 months until he is ready to play again.

Player Development:
Dan Nelson - Control improves 9 to 10
Ed Duke - Defense improves 15 to 16, Eye improves 12 to 13
Augusto Rodriquez - Defense improves 15 to 17
Paul Brown - Control imporoves 8 to 9

Luis Gonzalez - Movement drops 12 to 11
Arturo Ramirez - Stamina drops 9 to 8
King Brock - Speed drops 3 to 2
Mauro Candelaria - Contact drops 11 to 10
Roberto Perez - Contact drops 12 to 11, Speed drops 15 to 14

Free Agent Offers:
Rick "Bye Bye" Kelly - MR - 4* - 30 yrs old: 2 yrs / $3,780,000 ($1,890,000)
Rick is a middle reliever with solid ratings (12/11/16), he pitched with Annapolis the past two seasons and with the concerns about the bullpen he will help sure things up.

Raul Garica - SS - 1* - 20 yrs old: Minor League Deal ($600,000 bonus)
Raul is a young kid who has some promise. Offered him a small contract to come aboard, he is an average defender with decent batting ratings. In 2 seasons he has never played above AA, last year he hit .279 in 43 at-bats.

Takayuki Iemochi - SP - 4* - 25 yrs old: 3 yrs / $13,780,000 ($4,593,333)
Takayuki is a free agent from Japan and has solid stats, he has yet to appear in a DBL game. With my concerns about our starters, I felt it couldn't hurt to have a back-up plan. Rated 11/14/10, with a 20 stamina, he will fit in very nicely.

GM Thoughts:
Maybe I am being a little over cautious, but I am starting to get concerned about my pitching staff. I have a good feeling about the top 3, but when an player like Arturo Ramirez takes a stamina hit that bothers me. Last season he averaged 95 pitches per start, and taking a drop in stamina isn't going to help that number. I can't see him duplicating his Newcomer Award winning year... and with Pineda down for a few more months, and unsure how he will bounce back I felt I needed to reach out. Bye Bye Kelly should solidify our pen a little bit, as I went after someone who can throw strikes. Hoping to hear something from these guys soon... it is nice having the money to be able to talk to these guys that is for sure.

Overall, my feelings about this season are starting to diminish. Its not about the trades I made, its about how the current batch of players. I just don't know if they will be able to duplicate their success from last year.

Spring is right around the corner, so it should be interesting to see who we have in camp and who is ready to play. There will be some battles this spring for playing time.

January 2019 - League Update

$25,200,000 Lands SP Torres for Senators: Washington's signing of Carlos Torres was met with mixed reactions today as the 32-year-old starting pitcher was introduced to the media. Some experts consider him overpaid at $8,400,000 a year for 3 years, while others insist that Torres is a perfect fit for the Senators. The 32-year-old Torres has sat down 571 batters on strikes, walked 426 and put up a 4.28 ERA. His career won-lost record is 58-66.

Baltimore Announces Deal for Veteran 3B: Baltimore announced the signing of third baseman Robert Johnson earlier today, ending speculation on who they would acquire to fill the void at that position. Johnson will earn $5,600,000 per year, and will be with the club for 1 year. Johnson has chalked up a career batting average of .252 with 673 hits, 96 homers and 403 RBIs.

Iron Pigs Announce Deal for Veteran 2B: As speculation mounted into the morning, rumors over a final agreement between Jorge Quintero and Wilmington became a reality, with the star opting for a $19,600,000 deal over 2 years. During his career Quintero has chalked up 751 hits and a .252 average with 119 home runs and 435 RBIs.

Karl Armstrong Signs $11,400,000 Deal with Seaford: Sportswriters, fans and team officials listened today as 26-year-old starting pitcher Karl Armstrong committed to a $11,400,000, 2-year deal with Seaford. While Armstrong is seen as a solid player, he is still relatively inexperienced. In his career Armstrong has amassed 75 wins and 66 losses with an ERA of 4.27 and 890 strikeouts.

C Romero Signs with New Castle for $8,860,000: The New Castle Colonials have called a press conference later today to announce the signing of catcher Júlio Romero to a 2-year, $8,860,000 contract. Both Romero and the Colonials are said to be very pleased to come to this agreement. Romero has played in 526 games with a .243 career batting average and 381 hits. He also has scored 212 runs and driven in 182 runs with 39 home runs.

Annapolis Inks Star MR to $16,200,000 Deal: Annapolis officials were grinning from ear to ear as they introduced their latest blockbuster signing to the media earlier today. Willard Green, one of the game's marquee talents, opted for the Admirals after receiving a 3-year, $16,200,000 offer. During his career the 32-year-old Green has racked up 24 wins, 27 losses and 37 saves. His lifetime ERA is 3.33 in 439 games and 456.1 innings.

RF Harper Signs with Lewes: Lewes fans were pleased with the signing of Howard Harper today. The 30-year-old inked a 2-year, $11,600,000 deal with the Braves. Though his numbers don't jump out at you, Harper does fill a void for Lewes, according to several respected analysts. During his career Harper has compiled a .249 batting average and collected 561 hits, 106 home runs and 342 RBIs.

Star MR Harris Settles on Salisbury: Salisbury fans embraced the signing of Ron Harris today with a few doubts. While most were appreciative that the club had signed a solid ballplayer, they were also concerned about his reputation as a "me first" kind of guy. Harris was signed for $7,280,000 over 2 years. Harris has chalked up a career 20-and-8 record with 12 saves and a 3.36 ERA.

---
A lot of Ex-Cavs changed teams this week. Found that pretty funny, maybe I just go through players to fast. Looks like we will be seeing a lot of Ron Harris this year, as he signed with a divisional opponent. No way I would of given that much money, so it will be interesting to see how he does in Salisbury.

Top 6 Gainers in WAR (as of February 1, 2019):

5) Balitmore Barons 2.5 (0.3)
6) Ellicott City Express 0.4 (0.4)

20) Washington Senators -8.1 (-11.1)
19) Dover Generals -6.5 (-6.5)

Cavaliers Update : February 1, 2019

Norfolk, Kelly Hash out Details of Contract: 30-year-old reliever Rick Kelly has inked a deal with Norfolk. Many baseball people question whether he is really worth $3,780,000 over 2 years. However, the team thinks that Kelly will be a solid contributor this season. Kelly's career stats shape up like this: In 449.2 innings, he has struck out 301, walked 154 and saved 7 games while compiling a 28-18 record and a 3.88 ERA.

SP Takayuki Iemochi: Contract Signed: I hate to close the door on other clubs, but your offer is clearly the best option out there. Thank you for proposing it.

SS Raúl García: Contract Signed: Thank you for letting me play in your minor league system. I hope I will be able to help in the big leagues soon!

Thoughts:
Bye Bye Kelly was signed to give me some depth in the bullpen, he has decent stuff, but solid control. I like my relievers to have good control, walks drive me nuts, and with the news of Ivan Pineda's set-back I felt it was better safe than sorry. He should replace Ron Harris with out issue.

Tatayuki Iemochi is now our #6 starter right now, but he was signed strictly as a back-up policy, with the drop to Ramirez's stamina. He will make a nice addition to the bullpen as well.

Raul Garcia is a prospect that was signed in hopes he develops. He will make a nice middle infielder if he can get his swing down.

Starting Pitching:
The team is starting to take shape, as we are just about a month away from pre-season games. The signing of Iemochi gives us 7 starters that are big-league ready.

The first three are set:
1) Miguel Contreras
2) Matt Hollis
3) Shawn Brock

Brock will probably end up being the #4 starter, so I don't show back-to-back lefties.

4) Arturo Ramirez
Number four is Arturo Ramirez's spot to lose, as mentioned before his stamina drop to 8 really concerns me.

5) Ron Reilly
Reilly showed me he deserves a spot in the rotation thanks to a solid last 2 months, he may (hopefully) be coming into his own.

We will also have three guys in Spring that will be trying to prove themselves to me that they belong up with the Cavaliers.

Vaughan Griffith
He is an interesting case, as he went 7-1 in 9 starts last season, but a lot of that had to do with 6.3 runs per game he received. That being said, he is a big league pitcher, but he will give up a lot of long-balls.

Tatayuki Iemochi (L)
Another lefty, he will get a shot to prove his worth during spring training when we go with the 6-man rotation. Tatayuki may end up starting the season in AAA, but anything is possible. He has a stamina of 20 so he can throw for days, which is something that I like in my starters.

Juan Rosario (L)
Juan was acquired from the Salisbury Ports in the trade that brought John Phillips over, and has been a target of many in trade requests. He will be in AAA to start this season, but will be a solid #4 or 5 man in the future. Another guy with a stamina concern.

February 2019 - League Update

$10,300,000 Lands LF Salas for Admirals: Despite his solid numbers, some fans questioned the value of the Juan Salas signing even as Annapolis officials paraded him before the media this afternoon. Salas will surely bring a lot to the club, but he comes at a price of $10,300,000 over 2 years. In his 517-game career Salas has tagged 353 hits with 47 doubles, 5 triples and 74 home runs. His lifetime batting average is .246 with 252 RBIs and 209 runs scored.

Richmond Announces Deal for Veteran MR: Talk of a deal between Richmond and Javier Castro came together today as the two sides inked a deal worth $1,920,000 over 1 year. Castro is highly regarded around DELMARVA Baseball League for his talents and is expected to add that extra spark to the Cardinals roster. Lifetime Castro has made 348 relief appearances and converted 28 saves. His record stands at 24-and-24 with a 3.94 ERA.

Tsuneo Sato Signs $10,800,000 Deal with Washington: Senators officials presented Tsuneo Sato to members of the local print media today as their new starting pitcher. The deal, worth $10,800,000, guarantees the 31-year-old a home in Washington for 2 years. It should improve the ballclub, assuming he plays to his potential. Over his career Sato has 72 victories and 62 defeats with a 4.47 ERA. The 31-year-old hurler also has struck out 648 batters in 1091.2 innings and surrendered 1091 hits.

Sixteens-Senators Swap Confirmed: Newspapers in Georgetown and Washington reported that the Sixteens have reached a deal sending 25-year-old left fielder Jordan Bishop and 22-year-old minor league third baseman Ernest Furman to the Senators for 25-year-old starting pitcher Perry Rae. Since joining the league, Rae has compiled an ERA of 6.04 with a career record of 17-34. He has 200 strikeouts in 391.2 innings and has held opponents to a .305 batting average.

--
Notes: Annapolis was at it again, It will be really interesting to see if they will perform up to the changes they made. They brought in 6 new players, and 23.1 WAR. A pretty impressive off-season for them.

Top 6 Gainers in WAR (as of March 1, 2019):
1) Annapolis Admirals 16.3 (15.0)
2) Christiana Blue Hens 12.0 (10.7)
3) Balitmore Barons 4.9 (2.5) +2
4) Newark Millers 4.7 (4.3) -1
5) Lewis Braves 4.6 (2.8)
6) Ellicott City Express 0.4 (0.4)

20) Dover Generals -6.6 (-6.5) -1
19) Milford Clippers -4.4 (-4.4) -2
18) Washington Senators -4.2 (-8.1) +2
17) Norfolk Cavaliers -3.8 (-4.0)
16) Dover Generals -3.5 (-6.5) +3

Cavaliers Update : March 1, 2019

The Cavaliers held pat in March with no changes to the roster. We will have a nice spring with the a lot of competition going on in the bulllpen however. Currently we stand at 17 pitches, and I will get that down to 11, maybe 12 for opening day.

The following players are going to be on the roster barring injury or something drastic happening to them.
Closer: Dalton Whitaker
Dalton has 40,42 and 52 saves over the past 3 seasons, and is enshrined as our closer. He faulted in the playoffs last season, which worries me that he may be getting overworked.

Set-up Man: Will Rose (L)
Since Will has come over he has been a solid set-up man posting a 22-7 record with 8 saves. He will be locked done as the closer. He is a little disappointed he isn't closing, but he is hte next man in line if something happens to Dalton.

Set-up man: Jamie King
King had a good season last year, posting 3-3 2.91, but seemed to falter a little near the end of the year. Last season was his best yet and I expect him to grow on that. He throws hard, and gets ground balls, can't beat that.

Left Specialist: Elmer Hawkins (L)
Elmer has been in Norfolk for 5 years, only Dalton has pitched longer here than him, and he seems to be getting better. After an off season in 2017 he bounced back to form and posted a 5-2 2.40 last year. He will assume the role he had last year, and we look forward to him holding fort.

Middle Man: Rick Kelly
Just signed as a free-agent Rick will be our main righty out of the pen. With Ivan Pindea's injury we weren't sure what to expect from him, so Rick was brought in to solidify the pen. He had a decent year last season with the Admirals 5-1 4.50, but we are expecting more from him.

The rest of the guys will battle for a bullpen slot this year, with 4 locked-in and 5 starters the is only room for 2 or 3 more. Will be an interesting battle, and they all have options remaining.

Derek Carter - has performed well for the Cavaliers over the pats two season and is ready to become a full-timer. His control rating (10) bothers me a little, but other than that he is big-league ready.

Luis Gonzalez (L) - Is a front runner for a bullpen slot, after his performance last year in the playoffs. He can start in an emergency or just be a lefty specialist. Versatile with control, can't ask for much more.

Dan Nelson - has developed into a legit threat to make this team. Last season he struggled in 8.2 innings, but over the off-season he worked on his control and it has showed. Nelson is only 23, but he is ready to make a splash. He will get a good look this year.

Ivan Pineda - coming off a torn-flexor he may be suited for AAA to work out the kinks. He was lights out 2 years ago, but struggled last season before hitting the DL. He has great control and can dominate when he is on. He is a curious case, since he hasn't pitched in the minors in 2+ years.

Ernesto Beneques - signed out of Cuba last year to give the bullpen some depth, he tor his ulnar collateral ligament during pre-season and missed the whole year. He will try again this year, and with Pineda may see time down on the farm. He has no big-league experience but he is a well rounded pitcher who will get a look.

The following 3 pitches are starters, and will get a look for some pen action, but I would rather than start in the minors. Than toil away in the pen this year.
Juan Rosario (L) - Will be sent to AAA to start the season, he just isn't ready, unless something major happens over the next month

Vaughan Griffith - Most likely will be the odd man out and be sent to AAA ready to come up and start with the big club. After losing his first start with the Cavaliers he went on a 7 game win streak to close out the season. He did struggle some in the playoffs, but that is expected from a 22-year old rookie.

Takayuki Iemoch (L) - Will be out to prove he belongs. Signed out of Japan he will be pitching as a starter during the spring. If he dominates, then he could make the team as a starter or a reliever. It will be very interesting to see what he does. With no big league experience its all up in the air.

Spring Preview Position Players

We currently have 19 position players in camp and looking to cute that back to 14. With the 25-man roster I like to keep 11 pitchers and 14 position players, unless I really feel like I need more pitching.

I like to think we are pretty set on who is going to be where, but things can happen during spring training that can change that.

First, the projected lineup:
Javier Janchez (RF)
Roberto Perez (3B)
Kent Davis (CF)
Jeff Lewis (LF)
King Brock (DH)
Mauro Candelaria (2B)
Ed Duke (C)
Mike Ford (1B)
Augusto Rodriquez (SS)

This is a pretty solid lineup. The big change is moving Kent Davis down to the third hole. He hasn't been happy leading off, plus he only walked about 30 times a year. Janchez has a better eye, will draw more walks and did a great job in the playoffs leading off. Mauro Candelaria comes back and will play second, keeping Mike Ford at first. Ford hit .340 last season, earning the job. Candy has always been up for playing wherever so after a talk with him he agreed on the move. He has only played 80.1 innings at second over his 6 year career, no errors during that time.

Catcher: Ed Duke (L)
Ed had a career year last year and we hope he can put up similar numbers this season (.336-29-103), he is only 25 and has become a solid all-around back-stop. He walked more times than he stuck out last season (64/62), which is something we like to see in our hitters.

First Base: Mike Ford
Mike came up when Mauro Candelaria went down, and we couldn't take him out of the lineup. He put up a .341-6-54 season in 95 games, which impressed us so much that Candy will be shifted over to second giving Mike first. He is slow, not a great defender, but if he continues to hit he will play.

Second Base: Mauro Candelaria
Mauro is the only position player to be with the Cav's since 2013, and has played just about everywhere. He turned himself into a solid 1B and will now shift over to second and take over for the departed Jesus Rivera. Candy hits the ball, plays good defense and is reliable, he has played over 155 games in 4 of his 6 seasons. A career .291 hitter with 12 HR's, he is better suited as a middle infielder.

Third base: Roberto Perez (S)
The two time MVP had a strong quiet season last year, hitting .329-24-120, matching is 2017 MVP campaign. He is in the last year of his contract, so if he is with the Cavaliers at the end of the season might be surprising. An average defender, who hits and runs. Has 50+ SB's over the past 3 years.

Shortstop: Arturo Ramirez
A gold glove defender that is only getting better. Last year his bat slumped, but if he puts up numbers like .266-3-53 again this year and plays gold-glove defense its worth it. He will penciled in as the starting shortstop for most days.

Centerfield: Kent Davis (L)
Kent just hits and hits, a career .353 hitter, who plays close to gold glove outfield. He steals bases and doesn't like to strike out, or walk. He will be moved out of the lead-off spot this year and given a shot hitting third.

Leftfield: Jeff Lewis
Jeff is going to be mainstay in LF for 5 years to come. Last year he drove in more than 100 runs for the first time of his career, and hit over .300 for the 4th time. Jeff hits a lot and strikes out quite a bit 105 last year. He will give you solid outfield, speed and a great bat. He will be the #4 hitter knocking in the speedsters before him.

Rightfield: Javier Janchez (L)
I have been waiting for Javier come of age for the past 2 seasons, and I think he is finally ready, assuming his playoff performance from last year is any indication. Javier hit .210-4-26 in 67 games withe Cavaliers, then turned around and hit .327-2-8 during the playoffs. He can run, he can hit and he can field. At 21 he may be planting himself in RF for a long time to come.

Designated Hitter: King Brock (L)
King burst onto the scene 2 years ago and did better than anyone expected, then he followed that up with an even better 2nd year (.305-27-137). A prue hitter, he will expect to match those numbers again this year, with a nice boost to his power during the off-season 35+ HR's isn't out of the question. At 24 years old, he will be wearing blue and orange for quite a while.

Those 9 are pretty much on the team, unless something drastic happens. The rest of the team will be filled out with these guys.

The Front Runners:
Maik Wassink (1B/2B/SS)

He will get a fair shot at 1B battling Mike Ford for PT and will also fill in for SS and 2B when they need their off days. He hit .311-4-35 for Washington last season and we look forward to him contributing this year.

Cody Johnson (2B/3B/SS/CF)
Cody is out of options and after his 20 game stint with the Cav's last season proved he is ready, hitting .291. The previous 2 years he hit under .200 in 110+ AB's. He will provide us with solid back-up defense and should hit a decent amount. A true utility man, and at age of 29 is ready to play.

John Phillips (C)
John played in only 21 games last season, as the 3rd string catcher, but due to him being a rule-5 draft pick we had to keep him up on the active roster or lose him. He didn't hit well, but he played solid Defense is the best catcher we have to back up Ed Duke. There isn't much on the free-agent market, so even if he doesn't perform we may be stuck with him.

Byung-Hyun Chong (LF/CF/RF) - L
BH might be our best option as a back-up outfielder. He was asked for a lot in trade requests, but we heldon to him. He hit .288 with Norfolk in 19 games last season and should do about the same this year. He makes contact and he is fast. Two things we like in our bench players.

The Guys Fighting:
Francisco Gallegos (1B) - S

Franky will most likely spend the year in AAA, he played in 5 games in AAA last year and hit .409, but we aren't sure he is ready just yet. He is your typical power man, tons of power, not much speed. He does however posses a pretty good glove.

Emilio Gonzalez (SS)
Emilio has spent the past 6 years in AAA and he continues to hit the ball, a career .297-120-525 hitter in AAA. He would probalby of spent some time with us over the years, but his glove at SS is just awful. We may try to tranistion him over to third (not sure why we haven't yet) and see what happens. He has all the tools, but a glove to play in Norfolk.

Glenn Walker (C/LF)
Glenn is a long shot to be the back-up, but if something happens to the John or Ed he will come on in. He has hit in the minors, but there are a lot of questions about if he can handle the big league stuff. He is slow, a below-average catcher with an average bat. He was brought in last year, as a free-agent to give us some depth to our week postion.

Bryan O'Neil (LF/RF)
Bryan has no options left, and he didn't last year clearing waviers 3 times. He will get some time in the bigs this year, its just a matter of when and why. Will he earn it or will be an injury replacement. Last year he it better than expected .227-3-9 in 44 AB's and could probalby hold his own. He is your typical back-up.

Ramon Granados (LF/CF/RF)
Ramon was drafted in 2017 and has been "ready" to play in Norfolk ever since, at least in his head. We think he needs to develop a little and should make a decent 4th outfielder. He is just a little off from being a full-time guy. Last year in AAA he hit .348-6-23 after tearing up AA. He is fast, a solid outfielder, but average bat, currently. He will be with the Cavaliers soon, but it might not be this year.

Sergio Galvez (LF/RF)
Segio is going to be a mainstay one day very soon, but I am not sure if that day is now. Acquired from Milford at the beginning of last season Sergio tore up AAA hitting .359-22-126, and went 0-10 with Milford and Norfolk combined. When you talk about 5-tool prospects, Sergio is at the top of the list. He may be a mainstay in AAA this year to get the at-bats he needs, possibly learning first-base.

Joe Chambers (3B/SS)
Joe was a 2nd round pick 2 years ago and surprised us by developing into a solid prospect. The 21 year old spent all of last year in AA, hitting .260-20-84 and will start the season in AAA. If Roberto Perez gets traded away he could be the replacement for a long time to come.

Spring Training Report 1

The Cavaliers have posted a 8-4 record so far this spring, playing very inconsistent ball so far. The New Castle Colonials hold the best record in spring at 10-2.

Kent Davis is off to a hot start this spring hitting a team leading .476, one of 3 players hitting .400+. The other two are Roberto Perez and Emilio Gonzalez. The team hasn't showed much power yet, hitting a combined four 4 HR's, 2 3B's so far this spring. King Brock, with 8, and Mauro Candelaria, with 7, lead the team in RBI's.

Ed Duke is off to a slow start, (.162) but he has been used far too much. He will get some time off with John Phillips and Glenn Walker getting some AB's.

Francisco Gallegos will be the first cut of the spring. He will be sent down to AAA to get some more PT. He took a power rating hit at the beginning of spring.

Sergio Galvez is making some noise hitting .333 with a team leading 2 HR's. I'd like to see him get more at-bats, rather than be a back-up outfielder. Segio will get some more playing time at first-base now that Gallegos is heading down to AAA.

All 6 of our starts have had 2 starts each, and all have done a really good job so far. Miguel Contreras and Arturo Ramirez each have given up 3 HR's in 8 innings. Ramirez has struggled so far, posting a 7.88 ERA. Tatayuki Iemochi has posted a 2.25 ERA but has walked 6 in 8 innings.

Derek Carter has been lights out so far this spring. In 13 innings he has posted a 0.69 ERA and struck out 12.

My lefty specialists have both struggled some, with Elmer Hawkins and Luis Gonzalez both have ERA's over 10. Elmer hasn't had much work, but Luis has been a disappointment.

Overall the pitching has done ok, but we still have some room to grow. No one will be sent down yet, and I will try to get some other guys more action over the next week.

Around the League:
Free Agent Signings:
Veteran Perkins, Milford Complete Deal: Milford's signing of Don Perkins was met with mixed reactions today as the 41-year-old second baseman was introduced to the media. Some experts consider him overpaid at $2,440,000 a year for 1 year, while others insist that Perkins is a perfect fit for the Clippers. His numbers show Perkins is carrying a .288 lifetime batting average with 35 home runs and 280 RBIs.

Veteran Casey Signs 1-Year Deal: Blue Hens officials presented Jack Casey to members of the local print media today as their new closer. The deal, worth $1,820,000, guarantees the 36-year-old a home in Christiana for 1 year. It should improve the ballclub, assuming he plays to his potential. Lifetime Casey has a 19-30 won-lost record and a 4.62 ERA with 95 saves. He has made 353 games, logged 388 innings and fanned 286 batters.

Trades:
Baltimore-Virginia Beach Trade Confirmed: Baltimore and Virginia Beach made a trade today. In this move, the Barons shipped 27-year-old catcher Juan Crespo to the Surf Dawgs for 26-year-old reliever Maximino Jardim and 17-year-old minor league center fielder Roberto Álvarez. The Baltimore GM told reporters, "I think this trade is beneficial to everyone involved, including the players." Crespo has a lifetime .267 average with 277 hits, 79 doubles, 5 triples, 23 home runs and 122 RBIs to date.

Injuries:
Corbett Expected to Miss 4 Months:
The injury that has kept George Corbett out of action since 03/05/2019 will keep him out a while longer. Wilmington Iron Pigs officials made the announcement this afternoon. They said that Corbett is expected to miss at least 4 months with a concussion.

Latest Injury News for Escamilla: José Escamilla could soon be placed on the disabled list. The Milford shortstop told reporters that he expects to be "out of commission" for 3 months because of a concussion. He hasn't played since 03/10/2019 and, he said, he's "itchin' to get back out there."

Helton Learns More about Injury: Eric Helton will have to wait a while longer. The Chesapeake starting pitcher was informed this afternoon that he will miss another 5 months with ulnar nerve irritation. The injury has kept him off the field since 03/15/2019. Though Helton had hoped to return soon, he has no choice but to be patient. "Gotta stay focused," he said. "Gotta stay positive."

WAR Gains/Losses:
1) Annapolis Admirals 16.3 (16.3)
2) Christiana Blue Hens 12.7 (12.0)
3) Baltimore Barons 6.2 (4.9)
4) Newark Millers 4.7 (4.7)
5) Lewis Braves 4.6 (4.6)

20) Dover Generals -6.6 (-6.6)
19) Milford Clippers -4.2 (-4.4)
18) Washington Senators -4.2 (-4.2))
17) Norfolk Cavaliers -3.8 (-3.8)
16) Dover Generals -6.6 (-3.6)

Spring Training Report 2

Hitters
Our current lineup consists of 19 position players, so we will need to chop that by 5 over the next week. For the most part I am ready to make the cuts, I am just mulling over the last spot.

Going down:
Joe Chambers came spring with hopes to show us that he was ready to move up, but its obvious that he just isn't quite ready. He will be sent down before the end of camp, but will get some more starts in at third, while Roberto Perez rests with back-spasms. Chambers is only 21, so a year down in AAA will do him good. We have our sights on him becoming the Cavaliers next 3B.

Glenn Walker is probably a minor leaguer for life, but he is our 3rd string catcher, assuming a non-major injury.

Sergio Galvez is having a decent spring, but will be shipped off to AAA to learn how to play first. He has some skills there, so its possible he will catch on quickly. I am going to send him down there because I would rather him play every day.

Ramon Granandos another outfielder who will work well into our backup outfield, but for now more swings the better. he will go to AAA and play full-time. I would rather keep BH Chong as a part-timer and the let the young guys swing away.

The final cut will be Emilio Gonzalez or Bryan O'Neil. Emilio is hitting the ball well, but only plays 1 posistion (poorly) and Bryan isn't hitting the ball and plays the corner outfield slots. Both are out of options, so they will have to clear waivers. Right now I am leaning on keepign Emilio, but with a week to go that could change.

I reached out again to Roberto Perez, our current 3B and he is set on his 9 year $21 million per contract. He will be with us this year and maybe we let him walk, maybe we trade him at the deadline, a lot of things can happen between now and then.

Mauro Candelaria has moved over to second and caught right on, he is now rated a 7, up two points from the beginning of spring training. He and Augusto Ramirez will make a formidable up the middle combo.

Pitchers:
On the pitching side of things we still have 18 pitchers in camp, and will need to cut that down to 11 in a week. So 7 will be heading down to the farm.

The starters all seem to be comign around, what I really like to see is Matt Hollis and his 17 K's in 12 innings. Everyone else seems to following him and Miguel and pitching solidly.

Which means that Takayuki Iemochi will finish out spring training and start the season in AAA. He has had a pretty decent spring, but he was signed as a 5th/6th starter so he will be sent to AAA to get some work.

Juan Rosario, who has suffered some development issues over the off-season and is listed as our 7th starter. He will be heading down to AAA after making a start tomorrow. Arturo Ramriez is feeling day-to-day so he will get a rest.

Dan Nelson has thrown well in limited time this spring, he was out a week with a virus, and will get shipped down to AAA. He has a future with the Cavaliers, so we will try to keep him happy and he should see some time with us this year. Hopefully he can get his control up a little and he will be golden.

Ernesto Beneques hasn't allowed a hit in 3 innings, but he also just doens't match up developmental wise with some of the other guys. He has options and will be sent down to AAA to work on his control, possible even work as a starter. He only has 2 pitches so that may be questionalbe. His performace however makes him a candidate for an in-season call-up. After missing all of last season, he is itching to get back to playing games.

Cutting those 4 leaves us with 14 pitchers and 3 more to go... this is where its going to get pretty tricky, and I am not sure who to send down... we have a lot of talent on our staff...

Starters:
Miguel Contreras
Matt Hollis
Arturo Ramirez
Shawn Brock
Ron Reilly

Closer:
Dalton Whitaker

Set-up:
Jamie King
Will Rose

Relievers:
Rick Kelly
Derek Carter

-- up in the air---
Elmer Hawkins
Vaughan Griffith
Ivan Pineda
Luis Gonzalez

Elmer is the front runner, but he is having an awful spring. Vaughan is the #6 starter, but has been lights out this spring, it will be really hard to send him down. Ivan Pindea is comign back from a long-term injury but should be ready. And Luis has come on strong over the past week.

It will be a tough decision...

Around the League:
Free Agents:
Veteran 1B Walker Settles on Millers:
Bruce Walker and Newark have reached an understanding in which the 36-year-old veteran will make $13,860,000 over 2 years. It was more than his ability that landed Walker in Newark, noted club management. Walker is widely seen as a clubhouse leader and he should add veteran leadership to the organization. Walker has put up a career batting average of .326 with 954 hits, 67 homers and 365 RBIs.

Injuries:
Dover Loses Thomas, Out 8 Months:
The medical report is in: the injury that has kept Dover right fielder Chris Thomas out of action since 03/22/2019 will sideline him for another 8 months. The 28-year-old Thomas, who has a torn labrum, said he heals quickly. "I'll be back soon," he said, "and I'll pick up where I left off. "

WAR Gains/Losses:
1) Annapolis Admirals 16.3
2) Christiana Blue Hens 12.7
3) Newark Millers 6.6 (+1)
4) Baltimore Barons 6.2 (-1)
5) Lewis Braves 4.6

20) Dover Generals -6.6
19) Milford Clippers -4.2
18) Washington Senators -4.2
17) Norfolk Cavaliers -3.8
16) Milton Brewers -3.4

One more week of spring the real games begin...

2018 DelMarVa League Prospects

The Cavaliers have the top minor league system in the DelMarVa Baseball League, but we are vary hitting heavy. Our top 20 prospect, only 6 are pitchers. Then again players like Derek Carter and Dan Nelson are prospects, but have pitched too much to fall in the top 20.

The Cavaliers top 6 prospects:
1) Paul Brown - SP

"Paul Brown is going to be an ace. Fearless on the mound, and he makes pitching look easy". Paul is starting off in AA this year, but will be in AAA soon enough. He is 21, so we don't want to rush him because he is a star in the making. Rated as durable player and a team leader, he has it all.

2) Ramon Granados - OF
Ramon is 24 and is starting his 3rd season in the league. He spent the end of the season in AAA last year and will start there this year. He isn't happy about it, but we think its best. He is almost fully developed and will get a little more work. He will be up with the Cavaliers at some point this year. I am not sold on him as much as OSA is, but we will see what the future brings.

3) Takayuki Iemochi - SP
Singed out of Japan and is ready for the bigs, but with our stacked rotation he ended up being the odd-man out. Takayuki will be a #4 or 5 very soon. I am not ready to trade away Ron Reilly, but he could be a very good filler if it happens. "Above-average stuff for a kid of his age, tops out at around 91-93. Fastball isn't too straight, an dhe changes speeds nicely."

4) Armando Lopez - SP
Signed out of Venezuela 2 years ago he has progressed nicely up the system. Last year he started 32 games in AAA and we look to him to do the same this year. Once he gets his control up he will become a solid pitcher. "Really shows good command, and picks his spots well. Probably won't walk too many"

5) Alejandro Diaz - C
Alejandro signed from the DR in 2016 and has spent the last 2 years in the international complex. This is his first time making the top 100 list, he is 19 and will make the move to A ball at some point this year. He is a solid catcher and an ok hitter with a lot of raw power. "Top of the charts power potential"

6) Sergio Galvez - OF
Sergio Jumped up 22 slots on the top 100 this year and is just about major league ready. He has some development to do, but he is just about ready for the bigs. He will most likely be the first one up, if an injury occurs. He is going to get some playing time at first, but may end up being the left-fielder of the future with Jeff Lewis moving over to first. "Galvez has plus raw power and has hte chance to be a run producer."

Top 100 Prospects List Published: The season is about to start, so it's time to publish the annual Top 100 Prospects list. This year 22-year-old starting pitcher Pablo García of the Salisbury Ports is the #1 prospect overall.

Here is the top 10:
1) SP Pablo García, 22, Salisbury Ports

#1 draft pick from last season will be the #2 starter for the Ports this season. He only has a stamina of 6, so I can't seem him being a long-term starter, but he has a lot of talent.
Stuff: 11/14, Movement: 15/16, Control: 10/15, Stam: 6/20, GB% 68%

2) 2B Daniel Gómez, 18, Salisbury Ports
Discovered out of Puerto Rico last season, was the #2 prospect last year as well. He is 18 and has a bright future. He could be a 5-tool player if he can develop better defense.
Con: 9/16, Gap: 4/8, HR: 6/17, Eye: 1/4, K's: 4/12

3) SP Paul Brown, 21, Norfolk Cavaliers
Paul Brown will be in the rotation for the Cavaliers next season, and could probalby see some time this year. He is a big righty, with good stamina and 3 solid pitches.
Stuff: 14/18, Movement: 13/14, Control: 9/15k, Stam: 15/20, GB% 61%

4) MR Mariano Salazar, 21, Milford Clippers
A starter in the minors shifted over to a reliver during a late season call-up. He is a hard-thrower with 3 pitches, but lacks control. He is 21 so he will need to develop that. He could be the next great closer, or a solid starter, it will be interesting to see where he ends up at the end of the season.
Stuff: 18/20, Movement: 15/15, Control: 6/10, Stam: 12, GB% 63%

5) LF Ricardo Hidalgo, 21, Christiana Blue Hens
A second round pick two years ago Ricardo has made himself into a top prospect. He has a lot of developing left and will be in A-ball this year. He hit .236-14-50 last season, and I expect him to grow on those numbers this year.
Con: 7/10, Gap: 15/15, HR: 5/13, Eye: 9/13, K's: 3/7

6) 2B Dan Bernard, 20, Richmond Cardinals
A second year player will make his debut in AA after hitting .319 in A last year. He is a solid star in the making assuming he stays healhty and develops as expected.
Con: 8/11, Gap: 13/13, HR: 6/13, Eye: 5/9, K's: 6/11

7) CF Felipe Márquez, 21, Lewes Braves
A first round pick last season, has the potential to be a 5-tool star in the near feature. He is 21 and will be in AA this year. Most likely moving up to AAA or the bigs by the end of the year.
Con: 7/9, Gap: 9/10, HR: 3/7, Eye: 9/14, K's: 9/16

8) SP Jorge Jiménez, 21, Newark Millers
Jorge is going to be a #1 or 2 starter one day, and will probably end up being in the Millers rotation this season. Jumped up from #19 to #8 and has progressed up the charts every year since coming into the league in 2014.
Stuff: 9/11, Movement: 12/13, Control: 8/12, Stamina: 12, GB% 62%

9) LF Edgar Báez, 18, New Castle Colonials
Signed out of the DR last year, will be moving up the single-A this year after spending the year in the Int'l Complex. It will be interesting to see him perform in games this year.
Con: 6/10, Gap: 7/10, HR: 2/8, Eye: 5/13, K's: 2/7

10) LF Danny Turner, 22, Baltimore Barons
Danny was a first round draft pick last season, made it up to AA, and will start the season at AA this year. At 22 he is a late bloomer, but should be a solid ballplayer in the near future. Danny has a lot of growth a head of him.
Con: 7/9, Gap: 11/12, HR: 5/9, Eye: 9/12, K's: 4/7

Spring Training Recap

Spring training is over and the Milton Brewers finished with the best record ths spring winning 18 games, and now the question is what does that mean for the regular season? The Brewers held off the new look Lewes Braves in the Southern Division. The Braves come in with 3 aces on their staff, can they stay healthy this year? Always a big question in Lewes as injuries have plagued them the last 2 years. Dover has won the Southern Division the past 2 years and they have some solid young players that will fight till the end, the loss of Chris Thomas will hurt them however. Going to be a fun Division to watch.

New Castle Colonials have a new ace in town in Jose Matos and are primed to take home the Northern Division again. The bit question in New Castle is how will their 3x MVP Peter Peters bounce back from a year of injuries? If he comes back to his previous years .330-40-140 they will have what they need to make a run for the Championship. The Wilmington Iron Pigs Richard Taylor of the lead all players with 7 HR's this spring, but how will that translate in the regular season? The eyes

Jose Colon won the spring batting title hitting .431 for the Annapolis Admirals. The Admirals are all in this year, with the leagues top payroll and the best off-season WAR gain of any other team. New comer Abraham Thomas looks to lead them to Easter Division title. But if spring is any indication is going to be a lot tough battle to get there.

The Western Division was very close, will this be a view of the future? Will equal balance come back to the West and a battle for supremacy once more occur? Cavaliers have ran away with the title the past 3 years and they so now, but the Sentators and the young-up-and-coming Express hope to have something to say about it.

Season Predictions

Season Predictions
The predictions are in and it looks like it is going to be a fun and exciting season.

Delaware Conference
In the Southern Division the Lewes Braves look to be the front runner to knocking the Dover Generals off the pedistal. The Genrals have one the Southern Division the last 3 years, the last team to win other than the Generals? The Lewes Braves in 2015 and they took home the title that year. There are a lot of questions coming out of the this division: Can the Braves win 100 games? Can the Braves stay healthy enough to win? They have been plagued by injuries the last 2 years. Will the Generals loss of Chris Thomas (out for season) have a big impact? Does pitching (Lewes) beat hitting (Dover)?

In the Northern Divison it looks like the Colonials will take home the crown for the 3rd time in 4 years. The Colonials lost 33 wins between the losses of Rod Cantrell and Matt Hollis and will look to Jose Matos and veteran Keith White to fill their shoes. White has pitched in 9 total games the past 2 seasons, but when he is on he is lights out. The Cavaliers also look for Peter Peters to bounch back from an injury plagued year. The big question in this division is Do the Colonials have enought depth to withstand injuries? If not then watch out for the Newark Millers who are riding high after a solid spring.

Award Predictions:
Manager of the Year: Mel Gentry, Lewes Braves
Newcomer of the Year: Javier Trevino, Milford Clippers
Golden Arm: Jarred Perry, Lewes Braves
Sliver Slugger: Andy Kohl, Dover Generals

MarVa Confernece
The Annapolis Admirals are sick and tired of losing to the Cavaliers (lost to them the past 3 years) and went out and spent a lot of money bringing in one of the games to hitters Abraham Thomas (3 yrs/$59,600,000) and top starters Marcos Estrada (6 yrs/$108,100,000). They have the leagues top payroll and will be going all out in their race for the division title. The Ocean City Tourists, however look to get back to the playoffs for the first time since 2014, with one of the games best starting staffs anchored by James McLaughlin (17-11 last year). Will the money spent equal wins? Will the Tourists be able to score enough runs to catch the Admrials?

The Cavaliers are predicted once again to walk away with the Western Division with the games best staff and one of the best offenses. But they have a lot of questions that go along with them. How will Matt Hollis transistion to the MarVa Divsion and can he replace Jose Matos' 23 wins? Can Arturo Ramirez duplicate his sensation rookie season? Can the Cav's reaplace Derek Campbell and Jesus Rivera? Was Dalton Whitakers post-season struggles a sign of things to come? The Senators are going to be lurking as are the up and coming Ellicott City Express. Predicted to win by 25 is quite impressive, but will it become reality?

Award Predictions:
Manager of the Year: Ken Moore, Annapolis Admirals
Newcomer of the Year: Ronald Cook, Salisbury Ports
Golden Arm: Miguel Contreras, Norfolk Cavaliers
Sliver Slugger: Abraham Thomas, Annapolis Admirals

Current Week: 0-0 Opening Week!

Power Ranking: --

Owners Mood: Ecstatic

Our opening series is against the Richmond Cardinals, last season we beat the Cardinals in our first game and this year wil look to do it again, getting the season started off right. We will play our first 5 games at home versus the Cardinals.

Opening day will be Miguel Contreras against the loved ex-Cavalier Don Sweetapple. Sweetapple will try to become the fourth pitcher in DBL history to win 100 games. He is 34-24 in 2 years with Cardinals, after 4 wonderful years with the Cavaliers, and at 34 years old he is heading into the twighlight of his career. The Cardinals have never reach the playoffs and haven't finished above 3rd place since 2014 (finsished 2nd in 2013 & 2014). They are a team that has made a lot of bad decisions over the years and they beleive they are headed down the right path with the games 7th best minor league system. The hold an all-time record of 466-506 .479. The are managed by Jorge Zambrano, who is in his second year with the Cardinals after 5 years leading the Ocean City Tourists. He has made the playoffs one time in his career 2014 and he holds a career record of 477-416 .534.

Miguel Contreras will be on the hill for this 3rd opening day start as a Cavaliers and he is trying to shake off last season and get back to winning 20 games. He has won at least 15 games in 6 straight seasons and he is poised to keep the Cavaliers on top.

The opening day lineup for the Cavaliers will be very familiar to Cavaliers fans. The big change with this lineup is moving Kent Davis out of the #1 hole and into the #3 hole. He has been asking to bad in the middle of the lineup and now his wish has come true.
  1. Leading off is second year player Javier Janchez, he will playing RF, and out to show he belongs with the big club.
  2. Batting second is Roberto Perez, playing third, in what may be his last season as a Cavaliers.
  3. Batting third is Kent Davis, playing CF, a pure hitter, he looks to drive in some runs this year.
  4. Batting forth is Jeff Lewis, playing LF. Jeff is going to show the Cav's didn't make a mistake by signing him to a long term deal.
  5. In the 5th hole is DH King Brock. Brock is looking to prove last years 27 HR's were no fluke.
  6. Batting 6th, the elder Cavalier Mauro Candelaria, playing second. He will beginning another transistion to second this year after learning how to play first.
  7. Batting 7th is Catcher Ed Duke. Duke is going to try to repeat his stat line from year .336-29-103, and not fall off in September.
  8. In the 8th is Mike Ford, playing first base. Ford wasn't expected to play much last year, but after the Candelaria injury he came up and hit .341. He is out to prove that wasn't a fluke and to do it again.
  9. In the 9 hole is Gold Glove shortstop Augusto Rodriquez, his bat struggled some last year, but his defense all but makes up for it. We hope he can duplicate his .266-3-56 this year and play Gold Glove Defense. We will be happy with that...

I am ready for the season, so lets play ball!

Starters ERA: 2.81 (1st)
Pen ERA: 9.00 (9th)
Def Eff: .778 (1st)

Game 1: Richmond 0, Norfolk 4
Don Sweetapple will have to wait one more start to try to get win #100 as Miguel Conteras (1-0) out-pitched him, but not by much. Miguel went 8 innings, allowed 4 hits, walking 2 and striking out 5. Dalton Whitaker pitched the 9th striking out 3. Kent Davis was the offensive hero driving in 2 in the 4th a double, one of his 3 hits. Jeff Lewis added 2 hits.

Game 2: Richmond 3, Norfolk 9
Matt Hollis (1-0) showed the fans of Norfolk how good of a pitcher he is, going all 9, allowing 5 hits and 3 runs. He did get touched up for 2 HR's. Ed Duke lead the offense with a 4-4 day, driving in 3, on a 3-run HR (1) in the 8th. King Brock added 2 hits and 3 RBI's.

Game 3: Richmond 8, Norfolk 3
Arturo Ramirez (0-1) threw 97 pitches over 7 innings, allowing 6 hits and 4 runs, while walking 2 and striking out 5. The offense just coudldn't get him the run support he needed, collecting 9 hits, only one for extra-bases, a 2-run double by Augusto Rodriquez. Kent Davis and Mauro Candelaira each added 2 hits.

Game 4: Richmond 3, Norfolk 4
Shawn Brock (1-0) went 8 innings of 4 hit ball, allowing 3 runs, he walked 2 and struck out 6. Dalton Whitaker got the ball in the 9th and struck out the side for the save (1). The offense had 12 hits, with Roberto Perez, Jeff Lewis and King Brock each collecting 2, and Ed Duke added 2 RBI's.

Around the League:
Jose Herreras, Georgetown Sixteens, threw a no-hitter, walking 2 and striking out 6, against the Seaford Blue Jays. This is the seventh no-hitter in DBL history and the first since 2016.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: n/a
MarVa: n/a

Power Rankings:
1) Georgetown Sixteens (188.0)
2) Ellicott City Express (139.0)
3t) Ocean City Tourists (138.0)
3t) Baltimore Barons (138.0)
3t) Norfolk Cavaliers (138.0)
3t) Lewes Braves (138.0)

GM Notes:
I have to say I am happy how this week turned out, the starting pitching looks to be as good as advertised, now we just need to a couple of our bats going... One HR in 4 games is disapointing, so hopefully we can turn that around. Players like Perez, Lewis, Brock and Duke should all hit over 30 this year... The team bullpen ERA is awful, thanks to a sad performance by Will Rose. Rose pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowing 4 runs on 5 hits and a walk. I will have to keep my eye on him, he isn't happy as the set-up man and thinks he should close. He signed to stay here knowing he wouldn't close. With 2 years left on his contract I'd like to keep him around, but not if he isn't focused... Not much to say with 4 games in, but at the end of next week each starter will have 2 starts under their belts. One down fall about having solid starting is the bullpen doesn't get used as much as I'd like... Kent Davis is off to a torrid start with 8 hits in his first 4 games.

Week 2 (2019)

Current Week: 7-0 (10-1 (+2))
Next Week: 3 vs Baltimore Barons, 3 @ Chesapeake Blue Crabs
Power Ranking: 1 (+2)
Fan Interest: 89
Owners Mood: Ecstatic

Runs Scored: 76 (2nd)
Avg: .341 (2nd)
HR: 12 (5-5th)
SB: 19 (1st)

Starters ERA: 2.84 (1st)
Pen ERA: 3.78 (3rd)
Def Eff: .731 (1st)

Game 5: Richmond 1, Norfolk 13
Ron Reilly (1-0) picked up where he left off last season with a dominate performance, going 8 innings, allowing 7 hits and 1 run for the win. The Cavaliers offense smacked 13 hits, with 5 players collecting 2 each. King Brock lead the way with 2 HR's (2) and 5 RBI's, Mauro Candelaira added a 2B, a HR and 4 RBI's, and Roberto Perez hit a solo-HR and scored 3 times.

Virginia Beach Profile
Virginia was an expansion team for the 2017 season and have dealt with some growing pains. They lost 107 games in year one, then followed that up with a 118 losses, and this year isn't promising. They have the 19th lowest (out of 20) budget and 19th lowest payroll in the league. They have a new manager this season with Lee Jackson, who comes off of 4 years being the bench coach for the Washington Senators. Jackson also was the manager for the Newark Millers for the first year, before being fired 42 games into his second season. Jackson has a career record of 91-117 (.438) as a manager and would like to lead this team to their first sub-100 loss season. Jose Villa signed a HUGE deal in 2017 to be the ace, after a 12-14 2017 season, he fell to 6-21 lst year, with 5 more years left on his contract and $78,600,000 remaining he will be with the Surf Dawgs for a long time coming. On the offensive side they are lead by Kenny Lee who signed a $112,800,000 (6yr) deal in 2017 as well. He has not lived up to the hype of the $112,800,000 dollar man hitting only .251 last season.

Game 6: Norfolk 11, Virginia Beach 2
Miguel Contreras (2-0) went 7.1 innings, allowing 5 hits, 1 run while striking out 7. Will Rose went the final 1.2 innings, allowing 3 hits an 1 run, walking 2. The offense continued to hit, collecting 18 hits. Kent Davis lead the way with a 4-hit performance. Ed Duke added 3 hits adn 4 RBI's, including a HR (2). Roberto Perez added 3 hits, including a HR (2), 2 runs and 2 RBI's. Jeff Lewis, King Brock and Mauro Candelaria each collected 2 hits.

100 Win Watch: Don Sweetapple took a loss against Ellicott City Express going 4.2 innings, allowing 7 hits and 6 runs (5 ER).

Game 7: Norfolk 11, Virginia Beach 0
Matt Hollis (2-0) pitched all 9, collecting his first shut-out in Cavalier orange. He allowed 5 hits, 2 walks, and struck out 7. Jeff Lewis lead the offense with 3 hits, including a HR, Triple, 4 runs and 3 RBI's. Roberto Perez hit a HR (3) for the third straight game, and Javier Janchez, Mike Ford and Augusto Rodriquez each collected 2 hits.

Game 8: Norfolk 3, Virginia Beach 2
Arturo Ramirez (ND) went 4.2 innings, allowing 5 hits and 2 runs, striking out 5. He threw 93 pitches, seems like his drop in stamina is hurting him this season. Elmer Hawkins (1-0) came in and threw 2.1 innings of 1 hit ball, striking out 3, for the win and Dalton Whitaker closed the door for the save (2). Kent Davis had 2 more hits. Jeff Lewis added 2 hits and 2 RBI's and Roberto Perez scored 2 runs to pace the offense.

Game 9: Norfolk 6, Virginia Beach 4
Shawn Brock (2-0) looks to have found his comfort zone, going 8 innings, allowing 4 hits and 3 runs, before handing the ball off to Dalton Whitaker who pitched the 9th for the save (3). The offense put up 9 hits, with only Jeff Lewis collecting more than 1. Ed Duke drove in 3, and Lewis and Roberto Perez each scored 2 times.

Baltimore Barons Profile
The Barons have always been the last place team in the Eastern Division of the MarVa Conference. Last year was the first year they didn't finish in 4th, finishing in 3rd, their only winning season. This year they have a lot of promise, but will be up against some tough competition in the Annapolis Admirals. With the 15th lowest payroll the Barons are a young team with a lot of promise and manager Denis Richardson hopes to lead the to the playoffs for the first time. Richardson will be making his managerial debut in 2019, after 3 years as the New Castle Colonials bench coach and 3 years of the Georgetown Sixteens hitting coach. Tommy Rutledge is the ace of this team, he went 20-7 last year as a 24 year old, and aims to win 20 again this season. Tommy signed a 4-year extension keeping him in Baltimore till 2022. Francisco Durango signed a 3-year deal at the beginning of this season to be the offensive spark the Barons need. Last season he hit .309-16-67, and is a career .312 hitter.

Game 10: Baltimore 7, Norfolk 8
Ron Reilly (ND) got roughed up over 5.1 innings, allowing 12 hits and 6 runs, before the bullpen took over and a combination of 5 kept the Barons at bay and allowed the Cav's to walk away with the win. Rick Kelly (1-0) took home his first win going 1.2 innings of no-hitball, and Elmer Hawkins threw the 9th, gave up a solo-HR, but collected the save (1). The Cav's offense was at it again, collecting 17 hits, with every offensive player (11) collecting at least one. King Brock lead the way with 3 hits. Kent Davis, Jeff Lewis, Javier Janchez and Cody Johnson each added 2 hits. Jeff Lewis hit a 2-run HR (2) and Cody Johnson added a solo-shot (1).

Injury News: The 4th inning was a bad inning for our base-runners as first Maik Wassink had to be removed from the game with an injury, and then 2 batters later. Augusto Rodriquez had to be removed. Wassink will be out for 1-2 weeks, we are waiting on a diagnosis for Rodriquez. Both players will be placed on the 11-day DL (league evolution, 15-day was reduced to 11-day). MR Ivan Pineda was recalled from AAA, as is shortstop Joe Chambers. Chambers and Cody Johnson will share time at short, and Pineda will give the pen some rest.

Game 11: Baltimore 4, Norfolk 5
Miguel Contreras (ND) went 8 innings allowed 10 hits and 3 runs, then gave the ball over to Dalton Whitaker to collect the save. Dalton gave up a solo-HR to tie the game, but was the benefactor of a walk off win (1-0, BS 1). Ed Duke lead the offense with a 2-3 day, including a HR and 2 RBI's. Mike Ford alos added 2 hits (every other player in the linuep had 1). Jeff Lewis drove in Roberto Perez in the bottom of the 9th for the game-winner.

Injury News: Augusto Rodriquez will be listed day-to-day. We jumped the gun by sending him the DL, but it will work out for the best.

100 Win Watch: Don Sweetapple became the third DBL pitcher to win 100 games. Don went 9 innings, allowing 5 hits, 3 runs and striking out 7 in a 8-3 victory over the Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs.

Around the League:
  • The Seaford Blue Jays were no-hit last week, and this week, they are the team throwing the no-hitter. Jorge Padilla was in a zone, throwing 9 innings, striking out 11 and walking only 3, in a 1-0 win over the New Castle Colonials.
  • Dennis Marshall of the Lewes Braves will be out 11 months with a stretched elbow ligament. He pitched in only 2 games this season, last year he was 4-2 3.19 in 59 games.
  • Richard Taylor, Wilmington Iron Pigs, will miss 6 weeks with a sprained ankle. Taylor was hitting .250-1-2 on the season.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Steve MacOnie, Milford Clippers, 13-30, 2 HR's, 5 RBI's, 6 Runs
MarVa: Abraham Thomas, Annapolis Admirals, 12-27, 5 HR's, 15 RBI's

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (179.6)
2) Annapolis Admirals (143.9)
3) Ellicott City Express (136.9)
4) Georgetown Sixteens (117.5)
5) Lewes Braves (115.5)

GM Notes: This week made me feel a little better about this offense, its a really good offense when things are clicking. At this point the only offensive concern I have is Augusto Rodriquez, and as I have mentioned his glove means more than his bat, so its not an overly big concern. I still would like to see him pick it up when he rejoins the team (.142-0-5)... The pitching also showed me some things, the bullpen came through when needed, the starters looked good. The only concerns I have for the pitching staff is 1) the stamina of Arturo Ramirez and 2) the consistency of Ron Reilly. Reilly I can live with, Ramirez only going 5-6 innings, that I am not sure of. I would hate to lose him, he was our first #1 pick and last year lived up to the promise, maybe I am jumping the gun a little early. I don't know, its hard not to when Vaughan Griffith is ready to step-up... Joe Chambers is up to get a quick look, he will spend the next 11 days with us, then be sent back down to get some more work at 3B. Joe was 5-13 in AAA, and if we don't get anything worked out with Roberto Perez will be our 3B of the future... I think I like this right/lefty combo of Miguel Contreras and Matt Hollis better than Jose Matos. Matos is 0-1 in 3 starts with a 2.08 ERA.

Week 3 (2019)

Current Week: 4-2 (14-3 (+2))
Next Week: 1 @ Chesapeake Blue Crabs, 3 @ Salisbury Ports, 2 @ Washington Senators
Power Ranking: 1
Fan Interest: 89
Owners Mood: Ecstatic

Runs Scored: 110 (2nd)
Avg: .322 (1st)
HR: 17 (t-6th)
SB: 27 (1st)
Runs Against: 54 (1st)
Starters ERA: 3.14 (1st)
Pen ERA: 2.60 (2nd)
Def Eff: .730 (1st)

Game 12: Baltimore 2, Norfolk 12
Matt Hollis (3-0) threw his second complete game of the season, throwing 107 pitches over 9 innings, allowing just 4 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 10. The offense gave him enough support and then some, as once again every starter had at least 1 hit, with Jeff Lewis and Javier Janchez putting identical lines of 3-5 2 RBI's, 2 Runs. Lewis hit a HR (3), as did King Brock (3). Joe Chambers went 2-4 in his big-league debut.

Game 13: Baltimore 3, Norfolk 12
Arturo Ramierz (1-1) threw 111 pitches over 7 innings, allowing 6 hits and 3 runs, Jamie King threw 2 perfect innings to finish off the game. The offense once again exploded for 18 hits and double-digit runs. Cody Johnson lead the way with a 4-5 day, Javier Janchez and Ed Duke each had 3 hits, and BH Chong, Mike Ford and Joe Chambers each had 2. Ford drove in 3, Duke scored 3 times to lead the way.

Injury News: King Brock was removed from the game today after pulling up lame running the bases. The injury seemed to happen with an awkward swing earlier in the game, but Brock will be sent to the DL and it looks like he will miss about 3 weeks. His .354-3-15 will be hard to replace. Twenty-one year old, Francisco Gallegos, was brought up to play 1B (Mike Ford will move to DH) and bat in the 8th hole to repalce Brock. Gallegos will hit the ball, but he will strike out a lot as well.

Game 14: Baltimore 8, Norfolk 2
Shawn Brock (2-1) had a rough outing, going 6 innings, allowing 8 hits and 6 runs. Ivan Pindea came in and gave up 2 runs and 5 hits in 2.1 innings. And the offense went quiet, collecting just 4 hits. Ed Duke went 2-4 with a solo-HR (4) to lead the offense, Kent Davis added a run-scoring double.

Chesapeake Blue Crabs Profile
The Blue Crabs were always thought of as a conteneder to be, until last year, when a couple of trades where made because of financial concerns, and they finished 4th for the first time in team history. The Blue Crabs, Tourists and Admirals always seemed to go down to the wire for the first 4 years of the DBL, the Blue Crabs won that battle only once in 2015, their only playoff appearance. They have an overall record of 497-486 (.506). They are 10th in the league with a $142,000,000 budget and 10th in payroll at $115,555,000. They are lead by Guilherme Guardrio, who is in his second year as the manager of the Blue Crabs, before the Blue Crabs Guilherme was at the helm of the Dover Generals, where he earned 3-playoff spots and 2 manager of the year awards. For his career he has a 501-482 (.510) record. The Blue Crabs picked up Cliff Jones in the offense to give them some offensive boost, Cliff is a career .337 hitter and is expect to get on base and score some runs for a team that is desperate to score. Ex-Cav Joe Parker signed a one-year deal with the Blue Crabs this off-season and instantly became one of their rotation best. Larry Everhart would like to say he is the ace of the staff, winning 13 games each of the last two years.

Game 15: Norfolk 3, Chesapeake 0
Ron Reilly (ND) left after 23 pitches, but the bullpen picked him up, primarily Rick Kelly (2-0) who came in and threw 3 shut-out innings, giving up just 1 hit. Vaughan Griffith went 2.1 innings of no-hit ball striking out 5 and Dalton Whitaker closed the door with a 2-K 9th (4). The offense was tamed only getting 6 hits and 3 runs. Mike Ford and Francisco Gallegos each had 2. Gallegos doubled in the 2nd for his first hit. Joe Chambers hit his first career HR (1). Kent Davis hit streak ends at 20.

Injury News: Ron Reilly came out of the game complaining of cramps in his back, after 1.2 innings (23 pitches) and will be listed day-to-day in hopes he will be able to start his next time around. No transactions were made.

Game 16: Norfolk 3, Chesapeake 2
Miguel Contreras (3-0) went 7 innings, allowing 6 hits and 2 runs (1 ER) before handing the game over to the pen, which didn't disappoint. Dalton Whitaker closed out the game for the save (5). Mike Ford lead the offense with 2 of their 5 hits, Kent Davis hit a 3-run HR (1) in the 4th, which turned out to be all the scoring the Cav's needed.

Game 17: Norfolk 2, Chesapeake 5
Matt Hollis (3-1) took the loss leaving early with an injury, the bullpen gave up 1 run over the final 3.2 to keep the game close, but the offense couldn't make up the difference. Kent Davis lead the Cav's with 3 hits, Javier Janchez added 2. Roberto Perez and Ed Duke each collected an RBI.

Injury News: When Matt Hollis hobbled off the mound there was a gasp, that could be heard by the Cavaliers management, but when the diagnosis was "sore hamstring, out 3 days" that gasp turned into an exhale of relief. The rotation was changed from a 5-man to a 6-man and Vaughan Griffith was placed in the rotation as the 6th man to give Hollis a little more of a break... Ivan Pineda replaced Hollis and 13 pitches later he was removed, struggling with his location he finally admitted to having some elbow soreness and will be sent to the DL. Luis Gonzalez was brought up to help out the bullpen. Every pitcher down on the farm is exhausted, so it was hard to find one. I wanted to go with a starter, but was unable. Hopefully this will work out.

Around the League:
  • Dave Moore of the Lewes Braves and Carlos Martinez of the New Castle Colonials have been suspened for 10 games following a bench clearing brawl.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Alonso Reyna, Milton Brewers, 8-21, 4 HR's, 10 RBI's
MarVa: Mark Wright, Richmond Cardinals, 8-20, 3 HR's, 8 RBI's

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (153.2)
2) Ellicott City Express (130.1)
3) Milton Brewers (124.5)
4) Georgetown Sixteens (122.5)
5) Annapolis Admirals (108.9)

GM Notes: Injuries are something that can hurt any teams hopes, and this year it seems to be the Cavaliers turn to try to fight their way through. King Brock, Ron Reilly, Matt Hollis, Ivan Pineda all down this week, Augusto Rodriquez and Maik Wassink a couple of weeks ago, this is on top of all the other day-to-day nagging injuries the deal with. The worst part of it all, its only April. Is this a sign of things to come or are we just getting them out of the way? Hopefully the latter... We will be getting Augusto Rodriquez back from the DL soon, it will be tough to let Joe Chambers go, but its best for him to get his swings. His little spell with us, however, does make me feel better about losing a player like Roberto Perez... The offense came back down to reality later on this week, but they put on a display against the Barons. Too bad we can't play them every week... I am not sure what Alistair Turcotte, our manager, is doing with the staff, way too man 1/3 of an inning appearances. This is going to make me keep up 12 pitches, every time I look up, it seems like our staff is exhausted, thats going to wear us out by the end of the year. Last year I had the issue with him not wanting to use any relievers! Hmm... That King Brock injury could really end up hurting us, luckily he is only out for 3 weeks...

Salisbury Ports - Profile

The Salisbury Ports have the leagues lowest budget ($85,000,000) and payroll ($57,439,000) and just haven't had the luck of signing any big name players to long term deals. The fact that their owner Tae-wan Park, is very controlling hasn't helped either. The other expansion teams have thrown a lot of money around trying to attract that one or two "big" name player in hopes others would follow, but the Ports just don't have the flexibility or the mind-set to do that. They do have the leagues 3rd best minor league system and top two prospects, more on them later, so they have hope for a bright future.

2019 brought in a new manager for the Ports in Eduardo Diaz. Diaz spent the previous 2 seasons as the Bench Coach for the Ports, and is making his managerial debut. He is a very well rounded coach, who loves pitching, and should make a fine manager, as long as team owner is patient with him. With the right signings and the minor league system Eduardo could be the guy to bring this team into contention in a few years.

The Ports have a nice foundation for their starting rotation with Pablo Garcia and Ronald Cook, both rookies and both under 23 years old.

Pablo Garcia was the #1 pick in last years draft, out of Oral Roberts University, the consensus was he was the closest player in the draft to be big league ready. That lead him to being named the #1 prospect in baseball at the beginning of this season. After 17 starts in A-ball last season (7-4 2.81), the Ports thought he was ready for the show. Garcia made his debut against the Ellicott City Express, all Garcia did was throw 7 shut-out innings, allowing 4 hits, while walking one and striking out 4, taking home his first big league victory. He is the staff ace, and shoudl give the Ports fans a lot to cheer about. On the season he is 2-0 1.50 in 3 starts.

Ronald Cook was drafted #4 overall in 2016, but couldn't reach a deal with the Baltimore Barons, and elected to head to college, lucky for the Ports, because in 2017 the Ports took Cook with their 4th overall pick, out of Coastal Carolina. He was named the #15 prospect in baseball in 2018 and 2019. With just over 500 minor league innings, most in A-ball, the Ports feel that cook was ready to move up, and he joins Pablo Garcia as the youngest (and most promising) 1-2 punch in the game. Cook has made 4 starts this season, but hasn't had the luck Garcia has, only getting 1.25 RS/G from his offense, but he has pitched well enough to keep the Ports close. He is 0-1 2.11 in his 4 starts. Currently he is out, being watched closely with a "dead arm". He could make his next start.

James Walker is considered the "star" of this offense. Walker who was acquired this past off-season, for Gold Glove 2B Yasutoki Ine, is only 26 and should bring some pop to the line-up. Walker is fast, a solid out-fielder with an average stick. Last year he hit .242-14-62 for the Braves. He looks to grow on those numbers here in Salisbury.

The future offensive start is the #2 prospect in the game, Daniel Gomez. Gomez was signed as a free-agent out of the Dominican Republic early in 2017 and at 18 has already made a name for himself inside the DBL. He is a big 6'1", with room to grow, weighing in at 165, but shows the promise of a possible 5-tool star. Last seasons was his first year in the minors, he put up respectful numbers .270-6-52, with 26 steals, but he did strike out 128 times against just 22 walks. He is back in A-ball this season, and is full of promise. He is someone the Ports, and the league should keep an eye on!

Washington Senators - Profile

The Washington Senators were the first team every crowned DelMarVa Baseball League Champions with a hot streak that turned the last month of the season into the Senators show. They also made the playoffs in 2015 and eventually lost in the Championships to the Lewes Braves. The Senators have a long history of spending big-bucks on players, and that hasn't always worked well for them. This year that philosophy changed, and they didn't get any big-time free-agents into Washington. The Senators are owned by Juan Santiago, and he is very charitable with the finances, but general manager Daniel Robertson, his first year in Washington, is trying to take a different route and build a team, not buy a team. The teams budget is 4th in the league at $180,000,000, and the payroll is 8th at $135,580,000. Many sources around the league say the big-name players weren't interested in Washington, but Washington insists they didn't chase any. No one really knows the answer. The Washington Senators have a new philosophy on spending money and new philosophy in the dugout, as Ruben Franco was brought in to be the new manager in 2019. Franco spent the past 4 seasons as the manager of the Baltimore Barons, slowing bringing that team up to playoff contention. Franco has a career managerial record of 258-263 (.495), but has been said to have a very good relationship with his players. Will that translate into Wins?

The Senators have the leagues 7th best minor league system, with their top two prospects ranking #12 and #37. The bad news? They are both 17 and in the international complex, so they are being rated on promise and not on actual play. It will be interesting to see how these guys come a long over the years, because Julio Jaramillo, could end up being the games top power-hitter if he develops as expected.

The Senators top pitcher is Kyle Brown. Brown is only 30 years old and has 201 starts over his career, posting a 79-71 lifetime record. He is now in his 5th season as a Senator. His best season was his first back in 2015 (17-10 3.57). Last year he showed signs of that player (13-14 3.81), but ended the year with a losing record, for only the second time in his career, first since 2014. He anchors a starting staff that only has one pitcher under the age of 30, Bob Parks. Parks was a rookie last season, at the age of 25, pitching in 24 games as a reliever. This year he is transitioning to the rotation and will be the #5 for the Senators.

The staff does have the all-time saves leader, Brent Wagner, closing the door. Wagner has saved 221 games over his career at a .936 SV% (only 15 BS). This is his second year as a Senator, and at 37, he is hitting the twilight of his career. Last year he saved just 25 games, posting a 4.18 ERA, however this year his arm has shown signs of youth, saving 5 games and only allowing 3 hits in 7 innings.

The offense is lead by Derek Campbell and Andres Salinas, both new the the Senators in 2019. Campbell come over via trade with the Cavaliers. He had an "off" year last season, following a monster 2017 campaign, and so far this year he is on his way to putting up huge numbers, .329-2-11. He is the #4 hitter for this offense, and the most refined offensive player. At 27 he could end up being the leader of this offense for years to come, he will be under team control for 3 more years.

Andres Salinas was the Senators "big" off-season signing this year. He decided to leave the contending Dover Generals for the money in Washington (4 yrs/$64,000,000), and the Senators hope they repay them, but putting up similar numbers as he has in the past. At 31 years old, he is hitting, what could either be the start to some solid years to come, or the down-slope, he is a "fragile" player, so either one of these are possibilities. With Salinas they have a 3x Gold Glove center fielder, who is expected to hit .280-20-70 score around 80 and steal 20 bases. Andres has fit nicely into the leadoff slot for the Senators. Currently on the young season he is .362-2-12 with 9 runs and 3 SB.

The Senators are an older team with a lot of money to spend. This season it looks like they might struggle, but the same thing happened in 2013, when they went on a tear in September and ran away with the title. A trade, a hot streak, they could be in the thick of things. The one thing that is for certain the Senators are going through a change of philosophy, time will tell if its for the better or the worse.

Week 4 (2019)

Current Week: 5-2 (19-5 (+4))
Next Week: 2 @ Washington Senators, *end of month*, 4 @ Annapolis Admirals
Power Ranking: 1
Fan Interest: 89
Owners Mood: Ecstatic

Runs Scored: 143 (1st)
Avg: .315 (1st)
HR: 24 (t-6th)
SB: 38 (1st)
Runs Against: 78 (1st)
Starters ERA: 3.38 (1st)
Pen ERA: 2.15 (2nd)
Def Eff: .732 (1st)

Game 18: Norfolk 2, Chesapeake 1
Arturo Ramirez (2-1) said, look I can throw deep into games, going 8 innings, throwing 82 pitches, allowing just 2 hits and 1 run, while walking 2 and striking out 4. Dalton Whitaker closed the door for the save (6). The offense had 10 hits, leaving 9 runners stranded. Jeff Lewis was the offensive highlight, going 4-4 with an RBI. Javier Janchez added a run-scoring double.

Game 19: Norfolk 3, Salisbury 6
Shawn Brock (2-2) isn't pitching at the top of his game, but he isn't getting much offensive support either. Brock went 5.2 innings, allowing 6 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks, he added 5 K's. The offense was quiet and the only runs were thanks to a Francisco Gallegos 2-run HR (1), his first of his career a 329ft line drive, and a solo-HR by Mauro Candelaria (2). Mike Ford accounted for 2 of the 9 Cavaliers hits.

Transactions: Augusto Rodriquez and Maik Wassink are ready to come off the DL and rejoin the team. To make room for them Francisco Gallegos was sent down to AAA, he hit .190-1-2 in 21 at-bats with the Cav's, and will be back up I am sure by the seasons end. And Emilio Gonzalez was waived and DFA's. Gonzalez only appeared in 4 games going 2-4. Augusto Rodriquez will move back into the #9 hole playing SS, Roberto Perez will go from 3B to DH, Mike Ford will move for DH to 1B, and Joe Chambers will move from SS to 3B. Its hard to send Chambers down with how well he is hitting the ball .353-1-4. Mail will fill in for Ford and Rodriquez.

Game 20: Norfolk 4, Salisbury 1
Ron Reilly (2-0) went 8 strong innings, scattering 11 hits, allowing just 1 run, while striking out 3. Dalton Whitaker pitched a perfect 9th for the save (7). The offense hit the ball, collecting 15 hits, but couldn't get them when they counted leaving 10 runners on base. Mauro Candelaria, Roberto Perez, Kent Davis, Mike Ford, Maik Wassink, and Javier Janchez all had 2 hits. Mike Ford hit a solo-HR (1). Augusto Rodriquez drove in 2.

Game 21: Norfolk 4, Salisbury 2
Vaughan Griffith (1-0) got his first start of the season, extending the rest for our starts, and he didn't disappoint, going 6.2 innings, allowing 7 hits and 2 runs. He added walks 3 and struck out 4. Dalton Whitaker pitched the 9th for another save (8). The Cavaliers collected 10 hits, with Javier Janchez, Roberto Perez, Kent Davis and Cody Johnson each getting 2. Mike Ford drove in 2 with the games only extra-base hit a double.

Game 22: Norfolk 8, Salisbury 9 (15 Innings)
Miguel Contreras (ND) struggled through 5.1 innings, allowing 10 hits and 7 runs, while striking out 5. He also surrendered 2 HR's. Rick Kelly went 2 shut-out innings, Jamie King gave up the tying run in the bottom of the ninth, he went 2.2 innings, allowing 1 run on 2 hits and 2 walks. Luis Gonzalez (0-1) was the tough luck loser, going 3.1 innings allowing 2 hits and 1 run, a walk-off HR. The offense had their chances, leaving 12 runners stranded, collecting 13 hits. Kent Davis was the offensive star, going 4-7 with 5 RBI's, including a HR (2). Augusto Rodriquez was the only other Cavaliers player to collect more than 1 hit, getting 2, including a HR (1). Roberto Perez added a solo-HR (4). Both teams scored 1 in the 9th, then were held scoreless till the walk-off HR in the 15th.

Injury News: Elmer Hawkins has some mild shoulder inflammation and could be out around a week, so we sent him to the 11-day DL. To replace him on the roster we brought up 24-year old Dan Nelson. It was between Nelson and Derek Carter, but with the Cavaliers staff all tired, and Carter tired as well, Nelson was needed up with the big club.

Game 23: Norfolk 7, Washington 2
Matt Hollis (4-1) returned from his last game scare, and threw 8 innings, allowing 6 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 10. The offense slugged out 13 hits, with Jeff Lewis leading the way, collecting 4 hits, including a triple, and driving in 3. Kent Davis added 3 hits and 2 runs. Roberto Perez added 2 hits, including a HR (5). Mauro Candelaria and Mike Ford also added 2 hits.

Game 24: Norfolk 5, Washington 3
Arturo Ramirez (3-1) continued his hot streak, going 6.1 innings, allowing 7 hits and 2 runs, while walking 3 and striking out 7. Dalton Whitaker pitched the 9th for the save (9). The Cavaliers left another 12 men on base tonight. Mauro Candelaria had 3 hits and scored 1 run. Mike Ford added 2 hits, including a triple, and 2 runs. Maik Wassink collected 2 hits. Augusto Rodriquez collected 2 hits and 2 RBI's.

Injury News: Byung-Hyun Chong (.190-0-3) broke his thumb sliding into second base, following a double and will be out at least 4-weeks. He will sent to the 11-day DL. Bryan O'Neill will be brought up to add some depth to the outfield. I thought about going with Sergio Galvez, but I don't think he would up playing as much as I'd like.

Transactions: Emilio Gonzalez cleared waivers as has showed up in AAA to play ball.

Around the League:
  • Javier Uberuaga, Annapolis Admirals, is out 13-14 months after being diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament. He was 2-1 4.44 in 4 GS this season.
  • Errol Williams, Newark Millers, is out 2-3 weeks with a fractured foot, which suffered running the bases. Errol is the starting SS for the Millers, and has had a decent season so far .236-1-8.
  • Andres Salanis, Washington Senators, is out 4 weeks with shoulder inflammation, which he suffered while running into the wall on a defensive play. Salanis the a Gold Glove CF and lead-off man will be missed. .338-2-13.
  • Steve Jackson, Ellicott City Express, will be out 2 weeks with a herniated disc. Jackson is antsy to get back on the field. Hitting .346-0-2 on the season.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Pablo Freitas, Georgetown Sixteens, 11-29, 3 HR's, 7 RBI's
MarVa: Ray Key, Ocean City Tourists, 12-26, 2 HR's, 4 RBI's, 7 Runs.

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (148.5)
2) New Castle Colonials (119.5)
3) Georgetown Sixteens (118.5)
4t) Ellicott City Express (113.5)
4t) Milton Brewers (113.5)

GM Notes: Another week another couple of injuries. I feel like I should update my template with "injury notes" after every game, just in case. I have had a lot of turn over so far this year, and I am counting the days till I can get King Brock back. With Ed Duke struggling pitchers just don't want to pitch to Jeff Lewis. Brock seemed to offer much better protection... Joe Chambers is starting to come down, hitting only .316 now. If his slide continues Massink will move into the starting line-up, and Chambers will head down to AAA (where he probably belongs) and get more PT. I just have a hard time sending down a guy on a hot-streak... Javier Janchez is going to finish April over 300, barring two horrific games, and that makes me feel good. I have trusted my scout, Antonio Diaz, about him and he hasn't disappointed. He hasn't shown the power that we had hoped, but according to Diaz it will come. He isn't your prototypical lead-off man, but he is doing a good job so far. Posting a .350 OBP. He has only walked 5 times and struck-out 8, in 100 PA's. He even has a shot at pulling in a gold-glove in RF in the future. Its easy to forget he is only 21 years old... The team is coming together pretty good, I would like to see us hit a little better with runners on. ... After a hot start Ed Duke has disappeared, hitting .074 in his last 6 games. Maybe John Phillips should play some more, giving Duke more rest.

April 2019 - Recap

Players of the Month:
Delaware Conference:

Batter of the Month: Alonso Reyna, Milton Brewers
DE Conference's Best Batter Picked: Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 32-year-old Alonso Reyna put together a solid offensive month for Milton and was crowned April's top batter in the Delaware Conference. He batted .395 with 8 home runs, 31 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

Pitcher of the Month: Brad Jones, Newark Millers
Millers Hurler Named April's #1 Starter: Brad Jones has made fans throughout DELMARVA Baseball League take notice over the past month with an exceptional 4-1 record. No pitcher in the Delaware Conference threw better in April, garnering him the Pitcher of the Month award today. In 6 starts Jones compiled a 1.02 ERA, putting up a 4-1 record, striking out 45 and tossing 44 innings.

Rookie of the Month: Alfredo Marin, Wilmington Iron Pigs
Delaware Conference Names Rookie of Month: Alfredo Marín is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Delaware Conference Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers. In April the Wilmington hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .344 average with 22 hits, 1 home run and 12 RBIs.

MarVa Conference:

Batter of the Month: Francisco Reyes, Ocean City Tourists
MV Conference's Premier Batter Picked: Francisco Reyes battered MarVa Conference pitchers all April and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award. "I've been around DELMARVA Baseball League long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 29-year-old Reyes told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month." In 25 games, Reyes hit .344 with 10 home runs, 24 RBIs and scored 19 runs.

Pitcher of the Month: Matt Hollis, Norfolk Cavaliers
Hollis #1 MV Conf Pitcher in April: Matt Hollis hasn't been around the big leagues long enough to know that youngsters shouldn't be winning MarVa Conference Pitcher of the Month. But when you put up numbers like his, you're going to get some notice. In April the Norfolk starter earned a 4-1 mark in 5 starts. He threw 39.1 innings, struck out 33 and compiled a solid 2.29 ERA.

Rookie of the Month: Ray Key, Ocean City Tourists
MV Conference Selects Rookie Star of the Month: Youngster Ray Key emerged as the latest MarVa Conference Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Ocean City deserved the honor, batting .323 with 6 home runs and 15 RBI. Is the month of April a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Key enjoy the limelight.

League Leaders (as of May 1st, 2019)
Delaware Division:

AVG: Alonso Reyna (Milton Brewers) .395
HR: Andy Kohl (Dover Generals) 11
RBI: Alonso Reyna (Milton Brewers) 31
SB: Pedro Galavan (Dover Generals) 11

ERA: Brad Jones (Newark Millers) 1.02
W: Four tied with 4
K: Brad Jones (Newark Millers) 45
SV: Carlos Rodriquez (Lewes Braves) 9

Marva Division:
AVG: Kent Davis (Norfolk Cavaliers) .404
HR: Francisco Reyes (Ocean City Tourists) 10
RBI: Abraham Thomas (Washington Senators) 26
SB: Kent Davis (Norfolk Cavaliers) 18

ERA: Pablo Garcia (Salisbury Ports) 1.93
W: Two tied with 4 (including Matt Hollis)
K: Carlos Delgado (Annapolis Admirals) 38
SV: Dalton Whitaker (Norfolk Cavaliers) 9

Southern Division: (Predicted Lewes Braves 103-59)
The top four teams are separated by 2 games. It should be interesting how the this month transpires. If any division, this is one division that could go down to to the end with a multi-team battle.

Northern Division: (Predicted New Castle Colonials 96-66)
New Castle and Milford are tied up at top, but I have a feeling that won't be the case come the end of next month. New Castle needs to start hitting the ball if they want to remain atop this division. I think it will happen, but I have been wrong before.

Eastern Division: (Predicted Annapolis Admirals 91-71)
The Barons surprisingly hold the top stop by the Eastern. They have to keep a close eye on the Admirals however, who a lot of people believe are the most talented team in the DBL. I would like to see the Barons hold on to the top spot for as long as they can.

Western Division: (Predicted Norfolk Cavaliers 119-43)
The Cavaliers hold the biggest lead in any division. They seem to be on their way to their 4th straight division as long as they can stay healthy. The Express are a young team and aren't going to give up the chase just yet.

Ex-Cavaliers of Interest:
Jesus Rivera: New Castle Colonials: Batting Lead-Off: .245-1-11, 16 Runs, 4 SB
Jose Matos: New Castle Colonials: #1 Starter: 6 GS, 2-2 2.02, 1.7 WAR
Cooper Mananghaya: New Castle Colonials: MR: 5 G, 0-0 1.69, 5.1 IP, 7K's
Derek Campbell: Washington Senators: #4 Hitter: .314-5-16, 11 Runs, 1.1 WAR

Other Notables:
Sun Ho (AAA) - Took a HUGE hit to Control dropping from 9 to 5, in essence his big-league career is coming to an end. He is 2-1 6.08 in 4 games started this year.
Jose Rodriquez (AAA) - After starting in the first game this season for Annapolis (0-3 2 K's) he was sent down to AAA. Just about the same thing happened to him last season, but it 29 games sooner this year. In AAA he is hitting .291-3-14
Don Sweetapple, Richmond Cardinals - After earning his 100th with after an 0-2 start to the season, Sweetapple has won his last 3 starts.

Milestone Watch:
300 Career Home Runs
HR: Abraham Thomas - 299
HR: Billy Moore - 287
-- No player in the DBL history has reached the 300 HR plateu

300 Career Stolen Bases
SB: Roberto Perez - 265
-- Ron Alder the only other player with 300 SB's, reached last season

200 Career Saves
SV: Aaron Nicholas - 195
-- Only two players Brent Wagner (221) and Bill Fox* (209) have reached 200

1500 Career Strikes Outs
K's: Miguel Contreras - 1307 (193)
K's: Barney Bulter - 1292 (208)
-- Marcos Estrada has 1519, reaching the 1500 plateu in April. Miguel is #2

Norfolk Cavaliers April 2019 Recap

April was a continuation of last season, winning another 20 games and pulilng ahead in the division. Things are looking good in Norfolk, even though we are battling through some injuries life is good. Speaking off injuries, they really are the only thing that will be able to slow us down. In the past we haven't had the depth, but this year that is different, we have depth all over the place.
April: 21-5

Every starter is hitting .280 or better, except Augusto Rodriquez, and Rodriquez is starting to heat up of late. This is the same thing that happened last season till the bats cooled off in August/September. Kent Davis is off to another torrid start, he loves hitting in April.

The starters are all on pitching well, with only a couple day-to-day injuries. Vaughan Griffith filled in the void giving everyone a day off (will probably do that more often). The bullpen is doing well, but Will Rose is really sturggling. I am not sure if he is just hitting a wall or if he is upset he isn't closing, its only 8 games so I am going to have to keep an eye on him.

Overall we are off to another solid start. I am feeling good about this team and how this year will go...
