2033 - And rounds 3 and 4 are in the books
And we're done with rounds 3 and 4 and ready to move on to the final home run derby. Earl Webb called it quits with 761 home runs, while David Justice hung it up with 470.
There are now 380 players left, and we'll now begin to enter the final stage of the home run derby. I've tried this a couple of different ways, but what I've settled on is this: Players will be seeded into 32 brackets. In order to keep my sanity, any player who qualified for the final home run derby will only go forward once. In order to give them some type of advantage for achieving that feat the players who reached 400 more than once will get a first round bye, so 64 byes were given. That leaves 8 players for most teams, and 7 players for three teams. In order to even things out a little bit I've identify some at-large players who will be given a chance to qualify for the final home run derby. This is made up of players that hit a minimum of 20 home runs in a season, and going through and picking interesting names to include. There will be six players for each bracket participating in the play-in round with one advancing to round one. The remaining three highest totals will also be included to make 9 players in each bracket, plus the 2 players who received the bye. The 9 players will play one round, with the top four moving on, and five players will be eliminated leaving 6 players in each bracket. During round two the top four players will advance into two 64 player tournaments where they'll square off in head to head matchups until only one player remains as the ultimate home run king. Players will be reseeded for the brackets. Players will be importing at the age of their best season, and I will be using simulation mode to simulate 100 games, and we'll take their final home run total. If there is a tie they'll play a 20 game 'swing off' round. Over the next two weeks we'll be going through the play-in round, round one, and round two until the brackets are unveiled on March 17th. |

Bracket 1 - Play in Results
Play-in Round
The play-in round will be played at Camden Yards for all the brackets. The top player will advance to the final round, and since bracket 1 is also a player shy they'll receive one of the three wild card players to fill out the round. Ron Gant finished the play-in round with the highest total of home runs and is advancing with 33 home runs. Hack Wilson has been officially eliminated. For now Ivan Rodriguez, Curtis Granderson, Cecil Cooper, Stephen Drew, and Hack Wilson will wait the results of the final brackets to determine which three players will advance. Play-in Round
Roberto Kelly advanced to round one with 17 home runs. As a Yankee's fan growing up in the 80's Kelly was one of my favorites, and I was devastated when he was traded for Paul O'Neill. I remember hating the trade at the time, but that didn't last too long. Kelly hit 124 home runs in real life, with a high of 20 - just making the arbitrary cut-off point. So he was included for nostalgia reasons, and ended up advancing to the tournament.
