If John Lester Johnson is just a notch below Sam Langford, then why is he rated a 4 and Sam is rated a 10?

Good question. John Lester Johnson is one of the guys I have taken a deeper look at after I started my "universe" in 1918 and I came across some interesting comments. This is where my comment came from.

"Johnson was a tough, experienced black heavyweight of the day; a notch below Sam Langford, Joe Jeannette, Sam McVey, and Harry Wills, but nevertheless a formidable opponent. John Lester Johnson was said to have once beaten Jack Dempsey in Brooklyn. According to the story, "John the Barber" Reisler, Jack Dempsey's manager at that time in 1916, booked him to fight John Lester Johnson at the Harlem Sporting Club and there was no way out of it for Dempsey. Johnson had fought Langford several times and even had beaten him once. "You dirty no-good louse," Dempsey told Reisler. Then he went in and fought what a couple of writers called a draw with the experienced Johnson--who in the second round broke three of Jack's ribs with a right to the body. "I wasn't beaten," Dempsey said later. "I was massacered."

Dempsey was 20-5-1 [18 KO] at the time so he was not a total young, green fighter. And he beat Langford and drew with Wills. Yet Johnson's record [according to Boxrec] is only 26-21-2 [14 KO]. Why? A 4 for a guy with a pretty even fight record seems okay. Alonzo Johnson is a 4 with a similar record. Opponents obviously make the difference, of course, but something else must be at play. Was he out of shape half the time? Was he older and went downhill fast, hanging on for pay days? Was he robbed of victories because he was black in a time when he had to fight for the "colored" HW title? Were Dempsey's opponents to that time total mugs?

This is one guy who seems to be better than his record. A 4? A 7? What is a "notch" below?

Some times we gotta "tweek" them as we learn more about our fighters.

Al Hoosman ( this is from a German Movie he was in.) The only other pic I could find of him was in his army uniform in a jeep. And it was'n't much better

This one of Al Hoosman was part of a bunch I traded with a guy for. I think he got it off the internet.

Does anyone have a better photo of 20s heavyweight Erminio Spalla than the one I've attached?

Buddy Whatshisname, thanks for Spalla-another hard to find fighter!

I have tried to focus and tweak it a little to bring out more detail.
