How many players wouldn't be at the WC if they weren't getting paid? Lets be honest, there would be some and that's really sad.

FWIW, the sum of 50000 Euros per player has finally been paid, less than half of what the federation promised to pay for qualifying. The strike seems to have ended.
I can understand the players to some degree, as most of the money (talking millions here) that the Togloese federation received is probably in the pockets of the Federation president Rock Gnassingbe (brother of the country's dictator) or the seemingly disinterested general secretary Assogbavi. That guy seemed even unwilling to negotiate on the issue, leading to the first strike before the world cup -- on top of that he also called the coach Pfister a drunkard. Seems like a power struggle is taking place in the federation with the player caught inbetween. Gnassinbe likes the coach, Assogbavi hates him -- not the best basis for a good tournament. In the light of that, this seems the only chance for the player to even see a penny is at the World Cup -- or at least drag the corrupt administration in Togloese football out in the open. If they hadn't received their bonuses during the World Cup, then they probably would never have seen a penny. Also, don't forget that apart from Adebayor and a few others, most of these guys are actually amateurs. 50000 is a measly sum in pro sports, but not for them. Another tidbit of administration incompetence: Togolese player Karim Guede who was suffering from back problems proclaimed a few days ago that he's recovered and ready to play for Togo. Only then he was told that he had not been nominated for the 23-man squad. As it looked like he might not recover in time, they choose another player to replace him. Only that no one ever told Guede.... Last edited by Eumel; 06-19-2006 at 08:01 AM. |

dola
I don't think it's really sad, though. It's a short career, etc etc, and I don't regard football money as "real" money. I don't really care what they get paid (I think they should get taxed more of it in the UK, but that's a general political point). To call relatively poor lower-division Togoese players "greedy scum" for demanding significant bonuses is ridiculous, though.

redmarkYankees and Eumel have hit the nail on the head.
The majority of the African continent is full of corruption at the highest level, and as seen by the Zimbabwean cricket debacle and now this Togo dispute, until that corruption is tackled, African sport will never be able to move forward. How can they when most of the money they gain isn't put back into the sport, but is being taken away to line the pockets of the powerful people at the top? And I don't support any team to justify it either - although I guess what that also means is that I don't really have any right to talk about the sport either.
