The box score addition worked well. I should have it ready and upload it tomorrow or Thursday. (Have some work that I get paid for tomorrow to do.)
I started thinking about something to speed it up. The thought occurred to me while I was walking towards the TV to see the Yankees lose. ( )When I am checking April, why not mark down the highest box score that a match was found in. For instance. On the last day of April, it finds that the very last game scheduled was played in game 233. (box233.html). So, when I move to May, it would not search boxes 1-2000, it would search from 233-2000. Once it finds a match, it stops searching, so it does not actually go through all 2000 unless it does not find a match for some reason. (It should not happen). Well, it worked. I had checked and found that I had 504 box scores in that folder, so I had hard coded that number. I then put in the routine that counts how many box scores there actually are and then uses that. So, anyways, this new mod did speed it up quite a bit. But then all of a sudden, it errors in the middle of May. It said, 'Can't find box504. Hmmmm.. that's odd. Let's go look at the folder. Ah, there is a box0.html. What is that? I open it up and look and it is game #127. It shows a 12 inning tie between the Tigers (my team) and another team. Huh? Was Seling around? So, I go look at game 127 (box127.html) and walla, there it is. Same game, but the complete game. So, I scratched my noggin and thought, 'Where is all my hair going?'. Then I figured it out. I must have been playing that game and clicked on Box Scores during the game and it generated the box0.html. That makes sense. (Clean up your temp files man!!) So, anyways, not a problem. I check for a box0.html and if it exists, I subtract 1 from the total box scores. Solves the error problem. But, when I was looking in the folder, I saw that the box scores were not in order, when sorted by date. The first box score was #11, followed by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, (story1.txt), 10, 12, P1117, then 23, 13, 14.... This is because I played my game and it saved it as 11, then it simmed the rest. This could be helpful, as I may have found a fast way to look up a box score, if they are saved in order of the schedule. I have to investigate that further. Story 1 was a 2-hitter that happened in box score 10. P1117 was a player on the team that my team was playing. Which tells me that I must have brought up his HTML page during the game. I looked down the line and saw that for other players. So, basically what that means is that my way to speed it up, could possibly miss some box scores. Well, what to do? Well, first, post a message explaining it, because I am done working on it today, but want to have it fresh on my memory when I work on it tomorrow, so, that is why this post exists. When you click on Schedule w/box scores, it will go through all the box scores and write down the last box score of the month, for each month and put it in an array. So, when it gets to June, it knows it just has to search from 876 to 906. This will cause a delay at the start, but it will speed up each month. Each month will now take just about the same amount of time, versus the other method of later months being slower. (more box scores to search from) This will also solve the problem that what happen if you just selected June to create the calendar for. So, now you get a glimpse into what I go through when I write a simple routine. BTW, the number of lines of code (which does not include code automatically generated by the IDE, but does include blank lines) for the schedule routine is 4,600. However, when I write a routine like this, I do it for one month (I used April), then I copy and paste and modify it for each month. It works out to be about 200 lines of code for each month.

I just looked. I just made it a lot easier for me.
If you look at the CSV file that is generated, it shows it like this: #Saturday, 4/1/1957 91,4,3,7, 91,9,12,7, 91,1,2,1, 91,10,11,7, 91,5,8,7, 91,7,6,7, 91,24,23,4, 91,16,15,7, 91,14,13,7, 91,20,19,7, 91,18,17,7, 91,21,22,1, When the games are played, the order will be box1.html for the 1st entry, box2.html for the 2nd entry, etc. So, tomorrow, I modify the code. I can go STRAIGHT to the box score now and not have to search through them all. This is better than telling you that I just saved money on car insurance.

Well, my 'I will fix your computer for gas' appointment cancelled, so I worked a little bit on it between playing Battlefield 1942 and flicking through the cable saying, 'nothing but COPS on again, geeze'.
It looks like it worked. Since it is so fast at looking the box score up, there is no need to select a certain month. So, that was removed. Here is my Tigers that I am playing game by game. This is their April Schedule, I am in the middle of May, so that shows how the schedule looks mid season. I am debating on what else to add to the page, winning pitchers? losing pitchers? HRS? I don't know. Want to keep it the same size, so not a whole lot of room to work with. However.... One thought is... when you hold the mouse over a day, it could hover a 'game description'... i.e. Winner: A. Smith 14-5 Loser: A. Jones 2-11 Homeruns: Ruth (15), Jackawacajacka (2) http://www.sim2005.com/Calendar/LA_18_cal4.html NOTE: This league I have does not have logos, so I just copied them over from another league to show how they look with logos. I know they do not match. I may release this today if it checks out.

What exactly do the Green and Red coloring mean. I would think wins and losses but it doesn't fit that way.
Sidenote: Detroit Sucks. ![]() oh yea, looking sweet as always.

It is suppose to mean wins or losses, and for April it is correct, but for May, it does not seem to be correct.
On the other teams it seems to be ok, but I have not fine tuned that yet, that is why I have not released this version. Hey, they may have sucked this year, and last year, uh, and the year before, etc., but they don't suck next year yet. My Detroit here is just sucks right now. Once some of my key players start coming around, they will be back in the thick of things. Or at least, I hope. Feldt is starting to piss me off. He hits .340 and leads the league in stolen bases and then goes 1-48. Quote:

Love the top ten lists for single season leaders. One picky note. Top ten single season ERA leaders seems to only recognize era's under 2.00. Was this intentional?
Keep up the great work. |

Nope, it was not. Must be a bug. I will look into it. I must not have noticed it, since all of mine were below 2.00.

Still working on the Schedule with box scores. A pain in the BUTT!
I discovered a small bug with the team section if you click on one team and then click on another. Sometimes it will error. If you click on one team, exit teams and click on another, it is fine. This has been fixed for the next release. Also discovered a bug if you go into schedule and generate a schedule and then try using other parts of the program, it may error or write files to the wrong folders (these files are temp files though). So, to avoid this bug, if you use the scheduler, after done, exit program and start it again. This will also be in the update. I am going to start the schedule w/box over again, as I just can't get it to work correctly. I want to to color if the team wins, but I am pulling my hair out. So, to save hair loss, I start over. Update Soon...

Question - what does cato have that yours doesn't? Yours has tons of info, but I see a lot of people here are very attached to cato. Any thoughts?

I believe Cato's program as of now has a few more statistical categories that are not in the game but use stats in game to compute them. One advantage to AU is that it is ever growing and I'm guessing that Larry will go to work on a utitily that does very much what this one does when OOTP:2006 comes out where I believe Cato has had its last update.

I think that Cato has the winshares, where I have not done the winshares so far. (I need the Bill James book)
Mine has a LOT more HTML pages to look at with TONS more information that is not available anywhere else.

What if I wanna know the batting average of Vlad on Tuesday night games when he's had a pastrami sandwich for lunch and the pitcher had a ham sandwich?

I finally got the calendar to work (with box scores), and what a PAIN it was.
It now has each page correctly displayed with green showing the team won and red showing the team lost. It is nice, as you can see at a glance how well or not so well your team did for a certain month. This kind of display was NOT available for online leagues to put up. You can load in the template and define the colors if you want to match your layout, but I think the colors I used look pretty good (but what do I know, I wear one green sock and one red one and think it looks ok.) It takes about 15 seconds to generate a calendar, even with box scores. I wrote a neat little formula to figure out exactly what the box score number was for a certain game, so it is VERY fast. http://www.sim2005.com/Calendar/LA_18_cal4.html Is an example of my current league where I am in last place. I have played through May 22, so you can see how it will look during mid month if you go to May and how it looks with no games played if you go to June.

BTW, I just put some logos in there, as my league does not have the logos set up (I was too lazy), that is why some do not match, but it does work correctly.

Larry - Is it possible for you to utilize some sort of matrix which could calculate best individual seasons in the league's history? Something like your HOF points, but applied to a single season.
ex. 1. Babe Ruth 1927 2. Rogers Hornsby 1921 3. Barry Bonds 2001 you get the idea Last edited by Doughnuts?; 10-12-2005 at 06:27 PM. |

Yes, very possible and a very good ideal, however, there would be some questions.
A formula would have to be made to determine a rating for the best season. I guess points could be assigned for certain things, but it would have to be based on league averages (with a *). I don't agree with using straight league averages, anotherwords, likes say the league average for the AL is .250. Your player averaged .350. 100 over. But, that league average contains every single batter in the league. Including pinch hitters. And in the NL, it would include pitchers, so the the NL league average would be lower than the AL. And the reverse for the pitching. Pitching is deceptive, as it includes everyone. I would rather instead of using league average, use average of everyone with qualifying plate appearances. (Games * 3.1). This way the pitchers are not included, along with the fielders that can't hit worth a darn that come in late in the game. Same thing with pitchers. Just compare starters with starters, closers with closers, etc. Now, RBIS, well, if a guy bats 4th, he is going to get a lot more RBIs than a guy batting 8th. The leadoff hitter will get a lot more runs than the 8th hitter. So, it all boils down to coming up with a formula that would define the season. Someone come up with one and we can tweak it and I can add it. I already break the seasons down, so it would not be too difficult. Quote:

Maybe the answer would be in where they ranked in the leaderboards:
1st in HRS = 10 points 2nd in HRS = 9 points 1st in AVG = 20 points 2nd in AVG = 18 points Etc.. vary the points for each category depending on how important it is. The points could be reconfigured within the program. So, in 1901, AVG would be woth more points than HR. Extra points for POG, POW, POM, All-star, etc. lose points for errors on the D, striking out, GIDP, etc.

Well, I was pretty happy with the way my Calendar with box score looked. Everything looked good. I was testing it with my game by game league that is in mid May and it worked great.
So, I create a new season that started in 1965. I used a custom schedule to test it on that. The export looked just like the generated schedule, so I did not see a problem. I ran it and no errors. However, the first team I looked at had no result for their 1st game of the year. That's odd. Ok, maybe I have something wrong in the April routine, since this season begins on the 2nd, instead of the 1st. Nope, no problem, should work fine. I looked at another team. The first three games had no results. Looked at another and it had results, but wrong results. This is odd. What is going on? So, I stepped through the routine following the values. It went through the txt file and got to the first game. Team 3 vs. Team 2 (Rochester vs. Charlotte). Ok,it generated the box score number, which is 1 (one). Ok, no problem. It loads in the box, let's look at the box. Wait, box one shows a game between Botson and Tallahassee. That's not right. Wait again, it shows it as game #1 in the box score, but the date is 10/3/1965. Hey.. you over wrote the original game #1. A little research in the game, I discover what has happened. I simulated the entire season and told it NO, don't stop at the playoffs. When the playoff is reached, the 1st playoff game becomes game #1, over writing the 1st game of the year. There were 42 playoff games, so, the 1st 42 games were over written. I went into the game, brought up April 2nd on the schedule, and sure enough, it was the same 4 games that were played on October 3rd. Looks like I have found a bug. My schedule generator will still work perfect if you tell it NOT to show the results and it will also work perfect if you tell it to show the game results but the playoffs games HAVE NOT been played.

It may just be an issue with custom schedules, as I ran off another season and without using custom schedules and it worked fine. I will try another with a custom schedule and see what happens.
