Tiger Fan, Have you incorporated any of the two-sport athletes into this replay? I had an old Basebal Encyclopedia that had a few pages on two-sport athletes and I was surprised to see one was from my hometown.

There are a few. One that quickly comes to mind is Otto Graham who I had playing college basketball and football at Northwestern and now in the NFL with Tampa. Another is a little off the normal path. Sam Byrd was a major league outfielder in the 1940's before playing on the PGA tour. When he was released in OOTP in June I added him full time to the golf.
I am sure there are a few others particularily playing college basketball and either football or baseball. One more I just thought of is Dick Groat. He is a high school senior being recruited for my college basketball league and will be imported to OOTP in 1952 when he joined the Pirates. Groat is in the basketball replay because he played 26 games for the Fort Wayne Pistons immediately following his rookie year in Pittsburgh. JTB...if you can please post the list of two sport athletes from this era and I will make sure they are all included. They should all show up because I am adding every player ever drafted in the NBA or NFL along with all the major leaguers OOTP imports.

TIGERFAN'S SPORTING DAILY : SUNDAY OCTOBER 5, 1947
THE WORLD SERIES ANOTHER CUBS COMEBACK VICTORY! For the third straight game the Chicago Cubs rallied from behind to beat the Cleveland Indians and as a result the Cubs are just one game away from a World Series sweep. Saturday's loss was especially demoralizing for the Indians who led 5-0 heading into the bottom of the 7th before the Cubs scored three times in both the 7th and 8th innings to win 6-5. Just like games one and two the Indians struck first, scoring a run in the second inning thanks to an rbi triple from Don Gutteridge. The Indians increased their lead to 2-0 in the 4th when Lou Boudreau singled and scored on Ival Goodman's rbi double. Cleveland scratched out another run in the fifth inning in a mini-rally that was started by Indians hurler Warren Spahn reaching first on a passed ball following strike three. Meanwhile Spahn was just rolling along on the hill, working on a 2-hitter through 5 innings. In the top of the 7th Jeff Heath appeared to put the game away for the Indians when he hit a 2-run homer to make the score 5-0 Cleveland. That is when the Cubs bats woke up. Phil Rizzuto led off the bottom of the 7th with a single, just the 4th hit allowed by Spahn up to that point. Andy Pafko hit what looked like a doubleplay ball right at Tribe thirdbaseman Oscar Grimes. Likely 99 times out of 100 Grimes would turn two on the play but this time the ball skipped off the heel of his glove and there were runners on first and second with none out. Harlond Clift hit into a fielder's choice retiring Pafko but leaving runners on the corners for Bill Nicholson who promptly ripped a single to score Rizzuto. Don Johnson popped out to Indians catcher Hal Wagner for out number two but after Ken O'Dea worked Spahn for a free pass to load the bases Rip Russell delivered a single to score two runs and cut the Indians lead to 5-3. In the bottom of the 8th Spahn immediately dug himself a hole by walking leadoff man George Case. When he got both Rizzuto and Pafko to pop out it appeared the walk would not hurt the Indians, until Harlond Clift smacked a 2-run homer over the ivy in centerfield to tie the game. For whatever reason the Indians left Spahn on the mound and he gave up a single to Bill Nicholson and then a double to Don Johnson that broke the tie and put the Cubs in front for the first time in the game. Johnny Schmitz took over for Chicago starter Ed Head in the ninth and he got three straight groundouts to end the game and leaving the Cubs just one win away from winning the Series. Code:

Thanks jtb. Sure I will take the 1950's list whenever you get a chance.
Here are the two sport players I have found within my leagues so far from your list. Cliff Aberson - made his mlb debut this year playing a couple of games. He is also a backup safety for the Packers in his second NFL season. Howie Schultz- Just 22 he has played a handful of games with the Brooklyn Dodgers but spent most of his career in AAA. In the winter he is a junior forward at the University of Utah. Chuck Connors - wont debut in baseball until he is imported in 1951 but the Rifleman is presently a junior forward at Seton Hall. Probably not NBA calibre though. Irv Noren - will be imported for baseball in 1950 but right now he is a college basketball player for Niagara University. Mel McGaha - was just a mgr in mlb, but presently is a senior Guard at Georgia. May have a good chance at being drafted by the NBA Don Grate - only played a couple of baseball games in real life so not enough to be imported in OOTP but he is presently a junior guard on the Clemson basketball team. Pete Layden should import as a baseball rookie this offseason. He is also slated to be created as a senior defensive back for the University of Texas in 1949. Before purchasing TPB05 Baumholtz and Biasetti were in my NBA league. Afterwards when I reran it with imports from TDCB neither made the NBA but both were in my college game. Frank Baumholtz 1947 mlb rookie attended Cincinnati for basketball Hank Biasetti should import to mlb as a rookie in 1949. Had little success as a bench player on the Boston College basketball team.

TIGERFAN'S SPORTING DAILY : MONDAY OCTOBER 6, 1947
THE WORLD SERIES CUBS WIN! The Chicago Cubs completed a 4-game sweep of the Cleveland Indians in the World Series with a 4-2 victory. Chicago outfielder Bill Nicholson, who hit a pair of triples yesterday, was named the series MVP. Nicholson batted .467 with 3 rbi's in the series to narrowly edge pitcher Vern Olsen for the MVP. Unlike the previous three games, it was the Chicago Cubs who scored first. Ken O'Dea hit a two-out double in the bottom of the second off of losing pitcher Bill Lohrman and scored on a single from Barney Olsen. The Indians did manage to take the lead the next inning when Lohrman and infielder Don Gutteridge each had rbi singles. The Cubs immediately answered with a run in the bottom of the third when Nicholson hit his first of two tripes on the day, plating Eddie Waitkus who had reached on an error from Tribe second baseman Don Gutteridge. Chicago took the lead for good the following inning with 3 singles, the last from pitcher Vern Olsen to score Ken O'Dea with what would be the series winning run. In the 5th Nicholson capped off the scoring by hitting a 1-out triple and coming home on Andy Pafko's sacrifice fly. Vern Olsen had little trouble retiring the Indians from that point until he gave way to Johnny Schmitz for a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Code:

What was even more amazing was the beating was administered with a third string quarterback at the helm for the Pack. Robert Anderson took over for Jordan Montana on the first series of the game after Montana suffered an injury to his throwing arm. Montana had been filling in for rookie starter Frank *Albert who has an ankle injury. Anderson, the 7th year veteran who began his career with the Raiders, threw 4 touchdown passes in the win. RB Tony *Canadeo also played a key role for the Packers scoring 3 touchdowns. The Raiders remain tied for top spot in the AFC West because Kansas City was upset at home by the Detroit Lions. Fred Johnson ran for 131 yards and two fourth quarter touchdowns to lead Detroit past the Chiefs 38-29. Elsewhere In Denver, Sid *Luckman threw a pair of TD passes and George *McAfee ran for 124 yards as the visiting Chicago Bears beat the Broncos 27-20. Tennessee is the only 5 win team in the AFC after the Titans topped the Houston Texans 17-7. Ken Murphy's 81 yard interception return for a touchdown helped the Rams past New England 15-7. Steve *Van Buren ran for 95 yards and scored two touchdowns as the Jets beat Seattle 21-11 San Francisco needed a late touchdown to beat the winless Buffalo Bills 17-10. The 49ers are 5-1 and tied with Green Bay for the best record in the NFC. The Cleveland Browns won their third straight, topping Tampa Bay 20-14 and spoiling rookie quarterback Otto *Graham's first NFL start. Graham completed 21 of 38 passes for 238 yards but was intercepted once which led to a Browns touchdown. New Orleans improved to 4-2 with a 33-27 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. All the scoring came in the first half as San Diego doubled Minnesota 20-10. Cincinnati looked strong against NFC South leader Atlanta, beating the Falcons 31-10. 3 Bengals interceptions and plenty of pressure on Atlanta QB Arnie *Herber proved the difference. John Foster threw 3 touchdown passes as Baltimore beat Carolina 21-16. Defensive lineman Bobby Lynch returned a fumble 22 yards for the winning score as Jacksonville beat Indianapolis 26-19. NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE HABS WILL BE WITHOUT MOSDELL FOR 3 MONTHS Montreal winger Kenny Mosdell finally reported to Canadiens training camp today but the Habs were extremely upset to see him arrive on crutches. Apparently the 25 year old suffered a serious knee injury during a softball game in August. The Canadiens team doctor checked him out and does not expect Mosdell to be fit for action until at least Christmas. A defensive specialist Mosdell broke into the NHL with the old Brooklyn Americans as a 19 year old in 1941-42. After missing two seasons due to the war he made his Montreal debut in 1944-45 scoring 12 goals in 31 games with the Habs. Last season he had just 2 goals and 6 assists but was a terrific penalty killer. The Canadiens season opens October 15 at home to the New York Rangers. In other National Hockey League news the Boston Bruins have put Czech forward Jaroslav Drobny on their reserve list. Drobny, who will be a key component for the Czech olympic team this January in St. Moritz, becomes the first European trained player to be placed on an NHL team's reserve list. As good as he is at hockey, tennis is Drobny's primary sport and he is considered a possible future Wimbledon champ. BOXING SMITH WINS BY TKO Atlantic City lightheavyweight Billy Smith scored an 11th round TKO victory over Henry Hall in their 12 round bout in New York last night. The referee stopped the bout because of swelling around both of the New Orleans natives eyes. With the win the 26 year old Smith improves to 16-9 while Hall, who lost a world title shot against Lloyd Marshall in May, falls to 19-15-3. On the same card, Pennsylvania lightheavyweight Tommy Yarosz won by unanimous decision over Charley Williams. Yarosz is 27-8-2 while the 20 year old Williams drops to 18-9-1.

TIGERFAN'S SPORTING DAILY : TUESDAY OCTOBER 7, 1947
BASEBALL WORLD SERIES CHAMPION CUBS CELEBRATE Led by manager Charlie Grimm and World Series MVP Bill Nicholson the Chicago Cubs paraded the World Series trophy through the streets of Chicago yesterday culminating in a huge rally inside Wrigley Field. Just 24 hours earlier the Cubs had won their 7th World Series title in franchise history, beating the Cleveland Indians in 4 straight games. NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE DOLPHINS END LOSING STREAK The Miami Dolphins finally got their first win of the season with a 36-22 victory at home over Arizona in the Monday Night game. Dolphins QB Woody Brooks completed 21 of 33 passes for 288 yards and a pair of second half touchdowns as Miami ended it's 5 game losing skid. Dolphins running back Stacey Jolly gained 105 yards and scored a touchdown. Arizona got a great game from back Tuffy *Leemans, who had 21 carries for 110 yards and rookie receiver Hubert *Bechtol, who made 7 catches for 143 yards but it was turnovers that cost Arizona the game - 4 fumbles and an interception. Like Miami, the Cardinals are now 1-5 on the season. NEXT WEEK'S GAMES San Diego Chargers (2-3) at Denver Broncos (2-3) Oakland Raiders (3-2) at Kansas City Chiefs (3-2) Cleveland Browns (4-1) at Cincinnati Bengals (3-2) Washington Redskins (1-4) at Dallas Cowboys (0-5) Philadelphia Eagles (4-1) at New York Giants (3-2) San Francisco 49ers (5-1) at Seattle Seahawks (3-3) New England Patriots (2-4) at Miami Dolphins (1-5) Arizona Cardinals (1-5) at St. Louis Rams (3-3) Carolina Panthers (1-5) at New Orleans Saints (4-2) New York Jets (4-2) at Buffalo Bills (0-6) Chicago Bears (4-2) at Minnesota Vikings (2-4) Atlanta Falcons (4-2) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-3) Pittsburgh Steelers (2-3) at Baltimore Ravens (4-1) MONDAY NIGHT Detroit Lions (3-3) at Green Bay Packers (5-1) COLLEGE FOOTBALL IRISH REMAIN NUMBER ONE The University of Notre Dame remains the top ranked college football team after the Irish had little trouble with Pittsburgh, winning their season opener over the Panthers 38-6. Number two Michigan kept pace by beating Stanford 47-0. In two games the Wolverines have outscored their opponents 91-0. Texas remains number 3 after an impressive victory over North Carolina that dropped the Tar Heels out of the top 5. SMU, with a convincing win over Missouri and Mississippi, which improved to 3-0 with a shutout victory over South Carolina, round out the top five. Arkansas, which knocked Texas Christian out of the top 20 with a 28-7 victory, is the only newcomer to the top 20 but several teams are waiting in the wings including Wisconsin, Illinois and San Francisco. Like last week, the big matchup on Saturday once again involves Texas as the Longhorns entertain 8th ranked Oklahoma. The other game involving two ranked teams has 10th ranked Georgia visiting #12 Kentucky in an SEC tilt. Code:

It has been a fairly competitive conference but has been dominated in the 1940's by Niagara with Buffalo always having a solid team. Code:

They are favoured this season with a veteran squad led by forwards Billy Flanigan and Eric Raub. 2- RIDER: The Brons equalled a school record with 19 wins last season but once again failed to win the conference tournamanet. Still in search of their first postseason invite, Rider will rely on senior center Rafi Dewoody to lead the way. Senior forward Don Johnson will also play a key role. 3- CANISIUS: With four returning starters including preseason all-conference selection Greg Page the Golden Griffins may improve on a school record 18 win season a year ago. 4- MARIST: Shooting guard Clay Boothby may be the most underrated player in the conference but that could change this season as the Red Foxes return 4 starters and plenty of players with experience. 5- BUFFALO: At 13-14 Buffalo finished under .500 for the first time since 1937-38. Preseason all-conference selection Vasily Jones is back as well as junior forward Cornell Wilson and center Greg Walker. Add in freshman forward Ben Gruber and this could be a solid team. 6- IONA: The Gaels were 7-7 in conference play a year ago but will have a very young squad on the court this season. 7- SIENA: Senior guard Norbert Rome may be the best player in the conference but aside him from him there is not a lot of experience on the roster. 8- FAIRFIELD: Pretty much everyone of consequence is gone from an 18 win season a year ago. BOXING PHILY FEATHERWEIGHT BASSETT WINS 2ND PRO BOUT 18 year old Philadelphia native Percy Bassett showed why he is considered one of the up and coming young stars in the boxing world with a 4th round TKO victory over Freddie Russo. Bassett, a featherweight, improves to 2-0 as a professional with the victory. Russo, a New Jersey native, falls to 15-19 with the loss. The bout kicks off a very busy weekend for boxing with 3 World Title fights on the schedule highlighted by Heavyweight Champ Ezzard Charles facing third ranked Nathan Mann on Saturday. On Friday evening undefeated featherweight champ Willie Pep will face little known challenger National Kid in Dallas while tomorrow evening in Tokyo flyweight champ Speedy Akira defends his title against Frenchman Valentin Angelmann. NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE PRESEASON All 6 teams were in action playing exhibition games in preparation for next week's regular season opener. In New York the visiting Boston Bruins hammered the Rangers 6-0 as Milt Schmidt led the way for the Bruins with 2 goals and an assist. Paul Ronty, Pat Egan, Woody Dumart and Pete Babando had singles while Frank Brimsek turned aside all 16 Rangers shots he faced. In New York's defense, the Bruins started most of their regulars while the Rangers went with minor league goaltender Bob DeCourcy between the pipes and a roster composed primarily of players from their New Haven farm team. In Kitchener, Ontario Max Bentley had a goal and an assist in his debut with Toronto. Bentley's goal with just under 4 minutes to play gave the Leafs a 3-3 tie with Montreal after Rocket Richard and Elmer Lach each had a goal and an assist in the third period to give the Habs the lead. In Chicago, the Detroit Red Wings got third period goals from Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay to beat the Black Hawks 4-3. New Hawk Gus Bodnar, who was part of the trade that sent Max Bentley to Toronto, had a pair of assists for Chicago. All five starters return for the Chippewas including guard Kip Harris, who was named conference freshman of the year last season and made the preseason all-conference team this year along with center Patrick Hackyard. Hackyard averaged over 15 ppg and 13 rpg a year ago. 2- KENT STATE: Senior guard Cole Chamlee made the preseason all-conference team and is one of 3 returning starters for a Golden Flashes team that was 7-7 in the MAC last year. They have never won a conference tournament but with a few breaks that could change this season. 3- MIAMI(OH): The most successful team in the conference, the Redhawks have made the postseason each of the past two years including last season when they won 20 games and were invited to the NIT's. Mike *Novak was named to the preseason all-conference team 4- AKRON: The Zips, who earned just their second MAC title in school history last season, return virtually the entire cast from their championship squad. Look for sophomore PG Lou *Arko to take on a bigger role. 5- BOWLING GREEN: Coming off three straight 14-16 seasons the Falcons have a nice mix of veterans and youth. Look for Brian Peed, a shooting guard from Moduc, Indiana to compete for MAC freshman of the year honours. 6- WESTERN MICHIGAN: Despite an 18-12 season the Broncos missed the postseason for the first time in 3 years. There will be some growing pains this year as sophomore forwards Anthony Cho and Abel Davis, along with freshman point guard Nick Graves, are asked to assume key roles. 7- BALL STATE: After two straight 20+ win seasons, Ball State fell to 12-17 a year ago. The Cardinals lack talented upperclassman but do have a budding star in sophomore PF Jacey Fulgham, who averaged nearly 9 ppg coming off the bench as a freshman. 8- EASTERN MICHIGAN: The loss of conference MVP Stan *Brown to graduation will hurt. Center Omar Davis and forward Seth Binggeli each made the conference all-freshman team last year and combined with this year's top recruit, PF Ryan Kinney, give the Eagles optimism for the future. NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE WINGS DEAL TAYLOR TO BOSTON The Detroit Red Wings have dealt their leading scoring from last season's Stanley Cup winning squad to the Boston Bruins. Billy Taylor, who had 16 goals and a total of 53 points, was dispatched to the Bruins in exchange for young forward Armand "Bep" Guidolin. Taylor, who played just one season for the Wings, began his career with 5 seasons for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He led all playoff scorers with 15 points last season. Guidolin, who holds the distinction of being the youngest player ever to suit up for an NHL game when he took the ice for the Bruins at age 16 in 1942, had 24 points and 69 penalty minutes for the Bruins last season. NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION NBA SEASON TIPS OFF SUNDAY Another NBA season gets underway this Sunday with 6 games including the defending league champion Dallas Chaparrals travelling to Milwaukee to play the Hawks. It will be quite a different Dallas team from the club that defeated Baltimore for the NBA title just 5 months ago. Gone are two starters including young phenom John Layton. Starting shooting guard Freddie Scolari and key backups center Hagen Ochoa and guard Trev Reed have also moved on. The exit of Layton to Philadelphia will be the biggest blow. A 3-time SWC player of the year and National Player of the Year his senior season, the University of Texas product was bypassed in the NBA draft as scouts felt his lack of athleticism would not allow him to compete at the pro level. Dallas gave him a chance in training camp and he showed enough to make the Chaps roster to start the season. By midseason he was seeing a fair amount of playoff time and he made the starting 5 in January. The rest is history. He averaged 15.7 ppg and 7.2 rpg in the playoffs leading the Chaps to their first league title. Despite starting just 29 games he was named 2nd team all-rookie. Since he only inked a 1 year deal with the Chaps and refused to extend the contract when Dallas offered prior to the playoffs, Layton was free to sign with any club without compensation. A complete preview of the NBA Eastern Conference will appear tomorrow with the focus on the West in Saturday's issue. COLLEGE BASKETBALL MID-EASTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE PREVIEW The MEAC was dominated by Hampton for the first decade but the Pirates program has struggled in recent years. Delaware State has become the conference's dominant team in the last five years and last year the Hornets became the first MEAC team ever to earn an at-large invitation to the NCAA tournament. No MEAC team has ever won an NCAA tournament game and only Hampton in 1938 managed to win one in the NIT. Code:

This season the Rattlers return 3 starters including juniors Ed *Stanczak (15.1 ppg) and William Mitchell (13.2 ppg) 2- NORFOLK STATE: Warren *Perkins made the All-MEAC team last season as a sophomore and hopes to lead the Spartans to just their second winning season in a decade. Freshman PF Larry Fishback and sophomore center Charles Ramey will also play be roles on this young team. 3- BETHUNE COOKMAN: have not had a double-digit win season since 1941-42 but that should change this season. The Wildcats future is bright with two good young freshmen in 6'11" Nick Scott and 6'8" Giotto Ruch. Seniors John Busby and Kyle Lucas made the preseason all-conference team. 4- DELAWARE STATE: Coming off three straight trips to the NCAA including last season as an at-large after going 25-7 but losing the conference tournament finals to Florida A&M. However, the graduation of a pair of all-conference players will make it very difficult for the Hornets to get back to the big dance. 5- MARSHALL: The talk for the Thundering Herd all focuses on freshman point guard Anthony Badu. The recruit from Philadelphia is the player they hope to build their team around. After never winning more than 17 games in a season Marshall topped the 18 win mark twice in the past three seasons. 6- SOUTH CAROLINA STATE: The Bulldogs have not played a postseason game since 1934 and are coming off a terrible 9-21 campaign last year.Point guard Nick Provost made the MEAC all-freshman team and he, along with fellow sophomore Edward Foster, give the Bulldogs a little hope for the future. 7- COPPIN STATE: The only MEAC school to never win a conference tournament, the finished with just a 4-10 conference record and only 9 wins overall. 4 starters return for the Eagles and there is a little excitement about freshman recruit Victor Arellano, a 6'5" forward from Greenbelt, Maryland. 8- HAMPTON: The dominant team in the conference until a down stretch starting 1943 when they won 10,13 and 16 games in successive years. Since then recruiting has not gone well and the Pirates lack the talent to challenge for the league title. Hampton did make the NIT with a 21-11 season two years ago but slumped to 13-17 last year when the last of their solid recruiting classes graduated. MEAC PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM: G Warren *Perkins Norfolk State G William Mitchell Florida A&M F Kyle Lucas Bethune-Cookman F Ed *Stanczak Florida A&M C Josh Busby Bethune-Cookman BOXING CASTILLO WINS BANTAMWEIGHT BOUT Mexico City native Luis Castillo ended his two fight losing streak with a unanimous decision over Cuba's Manuel Armenteros in Mexico City last night. Castillo, 28-13-3, is ranked 7th in the bantamweight division worldwide, and is looking for a rematch with World Champion Luis Galvani. Galvani had beaten Castillo on a decision last April just before winning the crown. After losing to Galvani, the 26 year old Castillo was also outpointed by Manuel Ortiz. The loss is the first for the 21 year Armenteros, who had won his first 3 decisions since turning pro earlier this year. Tonight in Tokyo flyweight champ Speedy Akira defends his title against Frenchman Valentin Angelmann in the first of three straight evenings with World Title Fights.

NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION EASTERN CONFERENCE PREVIEW We are two days away from the opening tip-off to another NBA season. To prepare you for it here is a quick look at the Eastern Conference teams. Tomorrow we will focus on the west. Code:

The Bullets also made the finals in 1944-45 but again came up short. Their only NBAtitle in franchise history was won in 1940-41. First round pick Paul *Noel from the national champion Kentucky Wildcats will be eased into the rotation. The Bullets also selected Joseph Smith in the second round. Smith was the leader of the USC squad that faced Noel's Wildcats in the National Title game last March. BOSTON CELTICS STARTING LINEUP: 1946-47 POS NAME EXP COLLEGE PPG RPG APG PG Leverne Jones 12 UCLA 11.3 4.7 1.9 SG Rob Rodriguez 9 USC 14.6 5.0 3.2 SF Hulin Lee 6 Wichita St 14.0 4.8 2.3 PF Matt Prior 7 Oregon 9.8 5.5 2.0 C Terry Rowe 4 Oklahoma 11.6 9.7 2.1 The Celtics have finished last in the Atlantic Division each of the past 3 seasons and it's been 5 years since they had a .500 record. However, the did shake things up this offseason by signing two starters away from Pittsburgh in Rodriguez and Prior, along with a solid backup center in former Dallas pivot Hagen Ochoa. The changes mean Leverne Jones moves from SF to point guard and Boston fixture Phil Hernandez becomes the 6th man. NEW YORK KNICKERBOCKERS STARTING LINEUP: 1946-47 POS NAME EXP COLLEGE PPG RPG APG PG Jonathan Vasta 11 Syracuse 9.9 2.5 3.9 SG Bruce Phillips 3 Florida 6.8 2.9 3.5 SF John *Abramovic 3 Oregon 11.1 4.1 1.6 PF Thal Butler 7 Wichita St 15.3 7.8 2.8 C Leonard Loch 8 Penn 10.3 6.7 1.7 It was a great draft for the Knicks. 5th overall pick Paul *Huston was a standout at Ohio State and will likely be in the starting five by Christmas while 18th overall selection Bob *Harrison from Washingston will press Phillips for playing time at SG. Veteran center Brenden Barufaldi was signed as a free agent from St Louis to add depth as the Knicks hope to get back to the top of the division, a spot they occupied two seasons ago before a terrible 23-51 season last year. PHILADELPHIA WARRIORS STARTING LINEUP: 1946-47 POS NAME EXP COLLEGE PPG RPG APG PG Anthony Maggs 8 N Carolina St 15.0 4.5 7.9 SG Tony Bryant 13 N Carolina St 10.1 4.3 3.6 SF Xavier Gordon 6 Florida 12.4 5.0 2.5 PF Connie *Simmons 5 Baylor 12.9 7.1 2.6 C John Layton 1 Texas 9.5 3.8 1.0 The Warriors ended an 8 year postseason drought last year and hope the addition of center John Layton takes them a step closer to adding a third championship trophy to go with the pair they won in 1936 and 1937. Layton suddenly blossomed in the final third of the season and was dominating in the postseason, scoring 15.7 ppg in leading Dallas to the league title. An unrestricted free agent, Philadelphia won his services over the offseason inking Layton to a 5 year deal. PROVIDENCE STEAMROLLERS STARTING LINEUP: 1946-47 POS NAME EXP COLLEGE PPG RPG APG PG Kanaan Gochneaur 10 Illinois 14.1 4.0 7.1 SG Jim *Pollard 1 Alabama 13.7 3.4 2.3 SF Lonnie Duncan 8 Alabama 13.9 5.7 2.2 PF Hector Dunkel 12 Mississippi St 12.9 7.9 2.5 C Joe Velazquez 9 Washington St 11.0 9.1 2.1 First round pick George *Feigenbaum, a guard from Washington will see plenty of playing time as the season wears on. The Steamrollers are tied with Baltimore for the most playoff appearances in league history, but unlike Baltimore, Providence has never won a championship despite the 10 trips to the postseason. NORTHEAST DIVISION BUFFALO BRAVES STARTING LINEUP: 1946-47 POS NAME EXP COLLEGE PPG RPG APG PG Johnny *Logan 4 Indiana 9.0 4.3 6.8 SG Jassim Fowler 10 Yale 10.8 1.8 3.2 SF Ethan Batiste 6 Wisconsin 11.1 5.4 3.1 PF Miguel Dominguez 9 N Carolina St 17.8 7.4 1.7 C Kyle Wojna 7 Washington 8.9 7.0 2.1 The Braves have only made the playoffs 4 times in their 15 year history but three of the postseason berths were in the past 4 years. The Braves won the draft lottery and added a future star in first overall pick Odie *Spears. CLEVELAND CAVS STARTING LINEUP: 1946-47 POS NAME EXP COLLEGE PPG RPG APG PG Braden Morrow 8 Penn State 12.4 5.6 2.3 SG Omar Robinson 5 Clemson 10.0 4.6 4.5 SF Juan Harrison 7 Western Kentucky 21.8 5.8 2.1 PF Bob *Brannum 1 Wake Forest 12.6 6.5 2.1 C Alex McMillan 2 Western Kentucky 7.6 6.7 1.5 The league sad-sacks, Cleveland has never finished over .500 and has made the playoffs just once in the 15 year league history. The entire 12 man roster has just 41 combined games of playoff experience and none of them were played in a Cleveland uniform. FORT WAYNE PISTONS STARTING LINEUP: 1946-47 POS NAME EXP COLLEGE PPG RPG APG PG Mo Hybarger 13 CCNY 20.3 4.5 2.0 SG Ryan Brumsey 12 Iowa State 18.3 4.3 6.8 SF John Rodan 11 Oregon 12.2 6.8 2.5 PF A.H. The Pistons have made the playoffs just 4 times in 15 years but three of them came in the last 4 years. The player to watch is center Noah Baldin. He played just 5 games last season because of ankle and hand injuries yet he is the only true center on the Pistons roster after Bryan Courson left for St Louis. PITTSBURGH PIPERS STARTING LINEUP: 1946-47 POS NAME EXP COLLEGE PPG RPG APG PG Taro Devane 8 Wichita State 17.4 4.7 5.2 SG Ryan Fry 12 North Carolina 16.2 4.8 2.5 SF Byron Swygart 11 Indiana 14.9 6.3 3.1 PF Kevin Stewart 8 Kentucky 5.8 6.8 1.8 C Liam Brogdon 7 Penn 7.2 6.8 1.5 The Pipers won the division title last season but lost two of their starters to Boston as free agents. To replace them Ryan Fry was signed away from Philadelphia and Kevin Stewart was added from Minneapolis. In addition the Pipers strengthened their bench with the addition of Freddie *Scolari, who was a starter on Dallas' championship team a year ago. SYRACUSE NATIONALS STARTING LINEUP: 1946-47 POS NAME EXP COLLEGE PPG RPG APG PG Justin Rhoad 11 Seton Hall 20.2 5.6 4.5 SG Tuz Collins 6 Washington 10.0 3.0 5.8 SF Justin Hild 9 Illinois 19.2 6.0 3.3 PF Robert Stennis 12 Syracuse 7.2 3.7 1.4 C Damond Bothman 3 Alabama 8.8 7.4 2.1 The big news in Syracuse over the offseason was the return of former Syracuse University star Robert Stennis to the city. Stennis was lured away from Minneapolis with the intention of finishing his career with the Nationals. Syracuse missed the playoffs for the 4th time in the past five years. The Aces look strong this season led by junior forward Brock Haginas and sophomore guard Kevin Schield. 3-NORTHERN ILLINOIS: Have had just single digit victory totals in 4 of the last five seasons. The only exception was two years ago when after going 6-8 in conference play they surprised everyone by winning the Mid-Con tournament. With 3 returning starters and a pair of promising freshman forwards in Phil Berg and Trevor Smith the Huskies looked like a contender for the league title. 4-ORAL ROBERTS: They have never won the conference tournament and consistantly hover around the .500 mark. Sal Bell is arguably the best player in the conference and he has a decent supporting cast this season. 5-CHICAGO STATE: After former NCAA player of the year Booker Stokes graduated the school had to endure 7-22 and 3-26 campaigns. Last season they improved to 11 wins but still have a long ways to go if they want to recapture the glory days of the early 1940's which included a Sweet 16 berth. This year the Cougars have a veteran squad that includes 7 seniors. 6-VALPARAISO: Earned their first conference title in a decade last season when they won a school record 21 games. It will be tough to repeat that performance after losing 7 players to graduation including 3 starters. 7-WESTERN ILLINOIS: Dipped to 17 wins and missed the postseason for the first time in 3 years last season. If he can stay healthy forward Rob McCall is one of the best shooters in the conference. 8-ILLINOIS STATE: Won 17 games last year, their first winning season in this decade but lost to Valparaiso in the conference title game after having the best regular season conference record. Just two starters return from that team and the bench is woefully thin. PRESEASON ALL-MID CONTINENT TEAM G Colin Hayden Southern Illinois G Sal Bell Oral Roberts F Rob McCall Western Illinois F Kevin Herman Chicago State C Link Vang Southern Illinois NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE CANADIENS BEAT BRUINS 2-0 IN PRESEASON ACTION Maurice Richard and Elmer Lach each had a goal and an assist as the Montreal Canadiens beat the Boston Bruins 2-0 in NHL exhibition action. The hometown Canadiens took a 1-0 lead in the second period when Richard deflected a point shot from Roger Leger past Boston goaltender Frank Brimsek. Lach would add an empty netter in the final minute after the Bruins had pulled their goaltender for an extra-attacker. Bill Durnan turned aside 20 Boston shots for the shutout. The game marked the Boston debut for Billy Taylor, who the Bruins acquired in a deal with Detroit earlier in the week. There are two exhibition games tonight as the Toronto Maple Leafs entertain New York while Chicago visits Detroit. PRESEASON SCHEDULE LAST NIGHT Montreal 2 Boston 0 TONIGHT New York at Toronto Chicago at Detroit SATURDAY Toronto at Montreal New York at Detroit Boston at Chicago NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE WEEK 7 POINTSPREADS Finally had a big week on the prediction front as I went three for three. Green Bay destroyed Oakland and easily covered the spreads. The underdog Lions not only covered but won outright in Kansas City and Miami did not dissappoint at home Monday night. The perfect weekend improves my record to a still dismal 4-8. Here are the matchups this week: Code:
San Diego Chargers (2-3) at Denver Broncos (2-3) -4
Oakland Raiders (3-2) at Kansas City Chiefs (3-2) -1
Cleveland Browns (4-1) at Cincinnati Bengals (3-2) 3
Washington Redskins (1-4) at Dallas Cowboys (0-5) -1
Philadelphia Eagles (4-1) at New York Giants (3-2) 4
San Francisco 49ers (5-1) at Seattle Seahawks (3-3) -2
New England Patriots (2-4) at Miami Dolphins (1-5) -4
Arizona Cardinals (1-5) at St. Louis Rams (3-3) -8
Carolina Panthers (1-5) at New Orleans Saints (4-2) -8
New York Jets (4-2) at Buffalo Bills (0-6) 7
Chicago Bears (4-2) at Minnesota Vikings (2-4) E
Atlanta Falcons (4-2) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-3) -4
Pittsburgh Steelers (2-3) at Baltimore Ravens (4-1) -5
MONDAY NIGHT
Detroit Lions (3-3) at Green Bay Packers (5-1) -8
First up I like the Eagles minus the 4 points at New York. Eagles RB Harley Mitchell is due for a huge game after gaing just 47 yards in his last start against Carolina. Also I cant see how the Giants offense can move the ball against Philadelphia. The Bills have to win eventually so why not this weekend. Well, they may not win but we get 7 points at home against a one dimensional Jets team. Finally I will pick the Cowboys to end their winless streak with a home win over a hurting Washington Redskins club. COLLEGE FOOTBALL Just three college games on a light Friday night schedule but there is plenty of action Saturday including a top 20 showdown as 3rd ranked Texas hosts number eight Oklahoma. Elsewhere, top ranked Notre Dame travels to Purdue to play the Boilermakers while number two Michigan entertains Pitt. TONIGHT'S GAMES Kansas State at Boston College Richmond vs Maryland at Washington DC Texas Christian at Miami (FLA) SATURDAY'S GAMES Arizona at Hardin-Simmons Arizona State at Pepperdine Arkansas at Baylor Brigham Young at Utah California at Wisconsin Clemson at North Carolina State Colorado Mines at Wyoming Colorado State at Denver Cornell at Colgate Davidson at Wofford Detroit Mercy at Marquette Drake at Wichita State Duke at Navy Duquesne at Alabama Florida at Auburn Furman at South Carolina George Washington at Washington & Lee Georgetown at St. Louis Georgia at Kentucky Harvard at Virginia Hawaii at Montana State Illinois at Army Indiana at Iowa Merchant Marine at St. Bonaventure Michigan State at Washington State Mississippi at Vanderbilt Mississippi State at San Francisco Missouri at Colorado Montana at Utah State Nebraska at Iowa State New Mexico State at New Mexico New York University at Boston University Newberry at Citadel Northwestern at Minnesota Notre Dame at Purdue Oklahoma at Texas Oregon at UCLA Oregon State at Idaho Penn State at Fordham Pennsylvania at Dartmouth Pittsburgh at Michigan Portland at Nevada Princeton at Rutgers Rhode Island at Brown Santa Clara at Stanford South Dakota State at Kansas Southern California at Ohio State Southern Methodist at Oklahoma State St. Mary's at Washington Temple at Syracuse Tennessee-Chattanooga at Tennessee Texas A&M at Louisiana State Texas-El Paso at West Texas A&M Tulane at Rice Tulsa at Texas Tech Villanova at Holy Cross Virginia Military Institute at Georgia Tech Wake Forest at North Carolina Waynesburg at West Virginia Western State at Northern Arizona William & Mary at Virginia Tech Yale at Columbia CANADIAN FOOTBALL There is one Canadian Football game tonight to start a busy weekend. The Toronto Balmy Beach squad travels to Sarnia to face the winless Imperials. Here is the complete slate of game's this weekend including the Monday matchups on the Canadian Thanksgiving holiday. TONIGHT'S GAME Toronto Balmy Beach at Sarnia SATURDAY Windsor Royals at Ottawa Trojans Toronto Indians at Hamilton Wildcats Toronto Argos at Hamilton Tigers Montreal Alouettes at Ottawa Rough Riders Edmonton at Winnipeg Calgary at Regina MONDAY Ottawa Rough Riders at Montreal Alouettes Hamilton Tigers at Toronto Argos Edmonton at Regina BOXING HOMETOWN JUDGING ALLOWS AKIRA TO KEEP FLYWEIGHT BELT If they fought anywhere else there is a good chance Valentin Anglemann would be hold the World Flyweight Championship belt but a decidedly hometown decision allowed Speedy Akira to keep the title. Despite being outboxed in the eyes of most impartial observers, the cheering of the wild Tokyo Arena crowd influenced two of the judges enough to give Akira a majority decision victory. The referee scored the match a tie while the two judges each favoured Akira by a single point. The victory, in his first bout since winning the title from Jackie Paterson, improves Akira's record to 17-4-2. Angelmann, a 36 year old Frenchman with a 12-6-2 record, was supposed to be an easy victory for the champion before he faced top challenger Teddy Gardner. Instead the veteran French pugilist took the bout to Akira and had the champ in trouble on several occassions. Tonight's action includes World Featherweight champion Willie Pep facing National Kid in Dallas. Pep, with a perfect 21-0 record, makes his 4th title defense in two months against marginal opponents. Pep will face a challenge on Halloween night when he meets third ranked Henry Armstrong in New Orleans. Tonight's opponent for Pep goes by the name National Kid. He hails from Cuba and his real name is Adolfo Giz. Kid/Giz has a career record of 24-11-1 but has not really beat anyone of note.

Lytell is well past his prime, but the ex-Chicago Stag should add a steadying influence to the Indianapolis line-up. MILWAUKEE HAWKS STARTING LINEUP: 1946-47 POS NAME EXP COLLEGE PPG RPG APG PG Benny Roberts 3 Washington 12.7 4.3 3.0 SG Daniel Swanson 6 Florida 14.5 4.9 5.9 SF Wesley Hall 8 Notre Dame 12.7 5.4 2.5 PF Goodwin Wozniak 8 Western Kentucky 13.8 8.7 2.1 C Mike Jack 7 Illinois 6.2 6.3 1.5 Possibly the deepest bench in the division with addition of long time New Orleans Jazz forward Cameron Belli and some great young players like second year center Red *Rocha and rookies Ray *Corley and Mel *McGaha. Milwaukee has 8 playoff appearances in 15 years but is on a two-year playoff drought at the moment. They were in the running for free agent John Layton but came up short leaving the center position as a major weakness. MINNEAPOLIS LAKERS STARTING LINEUP: 1946-47 POS NAME EXP COLLEGE PPG RPG APG PG Jalon Isenberg 9 Michigan 11.6 4.8 2.0 SG Nurivan Inman 9 Illinois 12.9 3.3 5.0 SF Joe *Fulks 3 New York Univ 19.8 7.1 2.4 PF Akins Adkisson 12 Florida 14.8 8.3 2.0 C Logan Conyers 6 Alabama 4.7 4.9 1.1 The team leader is 26 year old Joe *Fulks. A scoring machine from NYU, Fulks has made the first all-star team each of his three seasons in the league. The Lakers are very deep in the backcourt. First round pick Bob Kirkland, from Oklahoma A&M will see plenty of playing time and longtime Indianapolis PG Ahmed Williams also needs to fit into the mix. At center, expect Conyers to be pressured for playing time by ex-Celtic Tyson Richardson. ST LOUIS BOMBERS STARTING LINEUP: 1946-47 POS NAME EXP COLLEGE PPG RPG APG PG Dave Askew 8 Florida 11.8 4.7 6.9 SG Gene *Rock 1 Oklahoma A&M 9.7 4.3 3.1 SF Mike Sharkey 11 CCNY 14.2 7.1 2.3 PF Macsen Thorpe 9 Indiana 18.7 8.5 1.8 C Bryan Courson 5 Notre Dame 8.8 6.6 1.5 The Bombers won the league championship in 1941-42 and again in 1943-44 but have missed the playoffs each of the past two seasons. Lack of a second big man to compliment Thorpe has been the problem of late. Bryan Courson was signed away from Fort Wayne and he will compete with rookies Garrett Johnson (North Carolina St) and Grant Loubiere (Prairie View). SOUTH DIVISION CINCINNATI ROYALS STARTING LINEUP: 1946-47 POS NAME EXP COLLEGE PPG RPG APG PG Brandon Griswold 3 Holy Cross 16.1 4.6 6.7 SG Thor Thorlaksson 4 Baylor 13.7 5.7 2.7 SF Cesar Whitsett 11 Iowa State 14.0 7.8 2.4 PF Liles Wilder 11 Notre Dame 12.6 7.5 4.7 C Mandek Backfisch 10 Holy Cross 10.8 6.3 2.4 The Royals won the first three league titles but have never been back to the finals since. The franchise had some lean years in the late 1930's and early 1940's but seems back on solid footing thanks to new ownership. They have finished second in the South Division each of the past three seasons. First round pick Bob *Davis, a guard from Princeton looks like a future star. DALLAS CHAPARRALS STARTING LINEUP: 1946-47 POS NAME EXP COLLEGE PPG RPG APG PG Cody Shaw 5 Harvard 13.5 3.3 6.4 SG Jarvis Ferguson 5 California 8.1 3.7 2.3 SF Jelani Sides 9 Harvard 10.6 4.9 2.5 PF Joe Cunningham 6 Holy Cross 11.6 4.8 1.6 C Steuart Granger 8 St Louis 11.5 6.7 2.2 It could be a long season for the defending champs as starting center John Layton and SG Freddie *Scolari left along with key backups Hagen Ochoa and TJ Hackett. In their place are former New York backup center Des Gugliemina, a strong rebounder with little scoring touch, and rookies Arnie *Risen (Ohio State) and Gary Taylor (Seton Hall). KANSAS CITY KINGS STARTING LINEUP: 1946-47 POS NAME EXP COLLEGE PPG RPG APG PG Mike Damon 5 Holy Cross 8.5 2.5 5.6 SG Gabriel Brown 8 Wisconsin 16.4 3.6 6.1 SF Winston Belin 4 Holy Cross 15.3 5.8 2.8 PF Jim Cokley 11 Holy Cross 18.6 5.5 2.2 C Bokeem Dillon 9 Yale 8.6 8.2 2.9 It has been 6 years since the Kings last played a postseason game, although they did have their best record during that time last season when they went 34-40. Looking at their starting lineup it is hardly a surprise to learn that Kansas City's coach, Jason Asbury, used to run the Holy Cross program. It will be just a matter of time before first round pick Ray *Ellefson, an All-American from Iowa, replaces Dillon in the starting lineup. KENTUCKY COLONELS STARTING LINEUP: 1946-47 POS NAME EXP COLLEGE PPG RPG APG PG Trevor Presgraves 3 Notre Dame 18.8 3.9 6.4 SG Matt Graham 13 Pittsburgh 16.1 5.4 1.7 SF Varun Hunter 0 CCNY in college PF Zach Rivera 4 Maryland 10.0 6.1 1.9 C Jason Tello 4 Princeton 5.9 5.5 1.5 With three very good young players in second overall draft pick Varun Hunter along with Presgraves and Rivera the future finally looks bright for the Colonels. After missing the playoffs 8 straight seasons, the franchise has certainly taken a back seat to the college game, with both the University of Kentucky and Western Kentucky surpassing the Colonels in popularity. NEW ORLEANS JAZZ STARTING LINEUP: 1946-47 POS NAME EXP COLLEGE PPG RPG APG PG Daniel Gray 6 Wake Forest 18.1 4.3 5.9 SG Ethan Milner 14 SMU 17.9 4.2 2.8 SF Taliek Baraza 14 St Louis 12.8 9.0 2.2 PF Carlos Ouk 3 UCLA 15.5 2.3 1.1 C Bam Sanders 11 Oklahoma A&M 10.2 8.2 1.6 A last place finish a year ago was uncharted territory for the 4 time league champions who won back to back titles in 1944-45 and 45-46. The result was a gutting of an aging squad and a total of 6 new faces including starter Ouk (from Buffalo) and Sanders (from Philadelphia). The biggest departure was that of 14 year veteran Cameron Belli, who had spent his entire career with the Jazz and was the club's all-time scoring leader. After a much publicized feud with Ethan Milner, Belli was allowed to sign with Milwaukee in the off-season. BOXING PEP IMPROVES TO 22-0 World featherweight champion Willie Pep improved his record to 22-0 with an 11th round TKO victory over National Kid in Dallas. Pep had no trouble with the bout and seemed to be toying with his opponent for several early rounds. Next up for the champ will be a much tougher challenge. He faces Mississippi native Henry Armstrong (31-2) in New Orleans on Halloween night. On the undercard Puerto Rican middleweight Jose Basora improved to 30-2 after his opponent, New Yorker Artie Towne, was disqualified for low blows. Basora is ranked 4th in the world in the middleweight division. Towne is 17-4-1 after the loss. CHARLES DEFENDS HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE TONIGHT World Heavyweight Champion Ezzard Charles will defend his belt against the third ranked fight in his hometown of Cincinnati tonight. Charles, 22-1, squares off against Nathan Mann (19-5-1). Mann has only two losses in his last 20 decisions and both of those were to then World Champion Joe Louis. Charles, who had lost to Louis last year, beat the champ in August to claim the title. This will be his second defense of that crown. NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE LINDSAY'S 4 GOAL GAME LEADS WINGS Ted Lindsay scored four goals and added an assist to power the Detroit Red Wings to a 7-2 victory over the Chicago Black Hawks at the Olympia. Gordie Howe, rookie Red Kelly and Don Morrison also scored for the Wings while Gus Bodnar and George Gee replied for Chicago. Max Bentley is certainly settling in with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Bentley, who was acquired from Chicago with Cy Thomas in exchange for 5 players, had a goal and 2 assists to help the Leafs past the New York Rangers 5-2 in NHL preseason action. Defenseman Bill Barilko also had a 3 point game for the Leafs while Syl Apps scored two goals. The Rangers have been outscored 11-2 in the two preseason games. TIGERFAN'S SPORTING DAILY : SUNDAY OCTOBER 12, 1947
BOXING CHARLES RETAINS HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE WITH TKO OVER MANN Ezzard Charles completely dominated his World Heavyweight title fight with challenger Nathan Mann, and wrapped things up in the 7th round, when the referee stopped the bout shortly after Charles had sent Mann to the canvas for a second time that round. The victory, before his hometown crowd in Cincinnati, improves the 26 year old Charles' record to 23-1. Mann, who also lost a title fight against Joe Louis last February, falls to 19-6-1. The 32 year old Connecticut native hinted after the bout he may be close to retirement. Next up for Charles will be a bout in Tampa on November 20th against Florida native Tommy Gomez. The 27 year old is 26-6 and coming off two straight knockout victories over decent opponents in Lee Q Murray and Embrell Davidson. Gomez and Charles have met twice previously with the champ winning both by knockout. On the undercard, 20 year old Jeffrey xSmith scored an 8th round knockout of Pat Valentino in the biggest challenge of his young career. The victory, just 2 weeks after xSmith suffered his first defeat, a split decision loss to Freddie Schott, gets the Iowa native back on the fast track as he rises through the division. Valentino, had been ranked 8th in the world, but will surely drop out of the top 10 after the loss. COLLEGE FOOTBALL TEXAS HAMMERS OKLAHOMA 62-13 Bobby *Layne certainly made an early impression on Heisman Trophy voters by throwing 5 touchdown passes as third ranked Texas destroyed number 8 Oklahoma by a 62-13 score. Despite the lobsided win the Longhorns will likely not move up in the polls as number two Michigan blasted Pitt 51-0 while the top ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish built a 37-3 lead and then coasted past Purdue 40-24. Notre Dame QB Johnny *Lujack threw a pair of touchdown strikes in the Irish victory. Some upheveal in the SEC as Georgia and Mississippi, both top 10 teams, lost. QB Steve xKuffrey was picked off twice as Kentucky blanked the Bulldogs 20-0 while Vanderbilt surprised Mississippi 17-7. San Francisco sits atop the NFC West with a 5-1 record thanks to their always solid defense. The Niners are tied for the league lead in turnover ratio at +8 and have one of the stingiest defenses in the league. However, it is the San Francisco offense that has been noticed, even with some key injuries. Veteran QB Koy Harris missed a couple of games but both he and backup Ike Meier did what was expected of them: Nothing fancy, just avoid the turnovers, work the clock and don't do anything to lose the game. That strategy appeared in peril when RB Travis Henderson went down in week two with an ankle injury, but backup Russ Davis has been a capable replacement, rushing for 100 yards twice in the past 5 weeks. At the other end of the spectrum are the Washington Redskins. Just 1-4, the Skins travel to Dallas in battle for last place in the NFC East against the 0-5 Cowboys. Nothing has gone right for Washington this year. QB Sammy *Baugh went down with an injury in week 3 and replacements Danny Peek and JC Wulfeck have been awful. The defense was also hit by the injury bug including first round pick CB Tommy *Harmon who ruptured his achillies tendon in the season opener. TODAY'S GAMES San Diego Chargers (2-3) at Denver Broncos (2-3) Oakland Raiders (3-2) at Kansas City Chiefs (3-2) Cleveland Browns (4-1) at Cincinnati Bengals (3-2) Washington Redskins (1-4) at Dallas Cowboys (0-5) Philadelphia Eagles (4-1) at New York Giants (3-2) San Francisco 49ers (5-1) at Seattle Seahawks (3-3) New England Patriots (2-4) at Miami Dolphins (1-5) Arizona Cardinals (1-5) at St. Louis Rams (3-3) Carolina Panthers (1-5) at New Orleans Saints (4-2) New York Jets (4-2) at Buffalo Bills (0-6) Chicago Bears (4-2) at Minnesota Vikings (2-4) Atlanta Falcons (4-2) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-3) Pittsburgh Steelers (2-3) at Baltimore Ravens (4-1) MONDAY NIGHT Detroit Lions (3-3) at Green Bay Packers (5-1) NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION SEASON TIPS-OFF TONIGHT WITH 5 GAMES Another NBA season begins tonight with 10 of the 20 teams on the court. The defending champion Dallas Chaparrals open the season on the road in Milwaukee against the Hawks. The game will be a little different for Cameron Belli. The 14 year veteran will be playing his first pro game not in a New Orleans Jazz uniform. The Jazz legend, who helped the club win 4 league titles, signed with the Hawks as a free agent during the offseason. Another much-anticipated debut occurs in Philadelphia where John Layton takes the court for the Warriors against the Chicago Stags. Layton, a 3-time Southwest Conference player of the year, was undrafted last season but signed with Dallas. By midseason he was in the starting lineup and played a major role leading the Chaps to their first ever league title. However, since he inked just a 1 year contract, Layton was a free agent over the summer and signed with Philadelphia after a bidding war involving half the league. Elsewhere Providence steams into Indianapolis to play George *Mikan and the Olympians, Kentucky travels to Kansas City and Syracuse visits Buffalo. NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE PRESEASON BRUINS BLAST BLACK HAWKS 9-0 BUT LOSE SCHMIDT The Boston Bruins fired beat up the Chicago Black Hawks to the tune of 9-0 but after the game it was the Bruins that were singing the blues. Veteran center Milt Schmidt was the receipient of a vicious slash from Hawks defenseman Bill Gadsby in the second period and will likely miss the first week of the season with a leg injury. Schmidt will be replaced on the NHL allstar team by teammate Billy Taylor for Monday's game in Detroit against the Stanley Cup champions. Pat Egan and Pete Babando each scored twice for the Bruins with Schmidt, Taylor, Paul Ronty, Kenny Smith and Woody Dumart adding singles. Elmer Lach scored two goals including one on a penalty shot to help the Montreal Canadiens past the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-2 in NHL preseason action. Habs defenseman Glen Harmon also had a pair of goals while Maurice Richard and Roger Leger each added singles. Ted Kennedy and Joe Klukay replied for the Leafs. Leafs third line center Tod Sloan left the game with an undisclosed injury in the third period. In Detroit, Buddy O'Connor had a goal and an assist to help the New York Rangers past the Red Wings 3-1. Bryan Hextall and Don Raleigh also scored for New York while second year winger Gordie Howe had the Detroit marker. Code:

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE BEARS NEED OVERTIME TO BEAT VIKINGS Sid Luckman and Larry Brewer combined on a 24 yard touchdown pass 2 minutes into overtime to give the Chicago Bears a 29-23 victory over Minnesota spoiling a tremendous Vikings comeback bid. The Vikings scored two touchdowns in the final 3 minutes of regulation to force the tie as Jim *Benton caught two Jim Elliot TD passes including a 62 yard desperation hail mary as the 4th quarter expired. The victory moves the Bears to 5-2 and a half game back of Green Bay in the NFC North. The Packers host Detroit in the Monday night game tonight. Philadelphia improved to 5-1 with a 41-13 pasting of the New York Giants. Harley Mitchell ran for 125 yards to lead the Philadelphia attack. The Eagles built a 28-0 first quarter lead thanks in part to a pair of interceptions. Giants rookie QB Harry *Gilmer was picked off 4 times. In the other NFC East game Sammy *Baugh was a surprise starter returning from injury to lead the Redskins past Dallas 27-24. In New Orleans, Todd Berger ran for 169 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the NFC South leading Saints beat Carolina 30-24. Tampa Bay and Atlanta each sit a game back of the division leaders after the Bucs beat the Falcons 17-15. Otto *Graham got his first NFL victory, completing 22 of 28 passes for 204 yards and a touchdown. The NFC West is tighter after Seattle handed San Francisco it's second loss of the season. Rookie Glenn *Davis had a 4-yard touchdown run and Anthony Rice kicked a pair of field goals as the Seahawks prevailed 13-7 in a tight defensive struggle. *Davis had his best game of the season, gaining 106 yards on the ground. The St Louis Rams are tied with Seattle a game back of the 49ers after beating Arizona 23-13. A tremendous defensive effort by both clubs in Baltimore where the hometown Ravens prevailed 6-0 over Pittsburgh. Cincinnati and Cleveland are each 4-2 and a game back of Baltimore after the Bengals beat the Browns 21-17. Ulish Groce threw for 379 yards as the Kansas City Chiefs pulled into first place in the AFC West with a 23-10 victory over Oakland. The Chiefs should have won by an even larger margin the way the dominated the game, but Groce was picked off twice deep in Oakland territory. With both the first and second string quarterbacks sidelined, rookie San Diego signal-caller Les Horvath came up with a big game, tossing 4 touchdown passes as the Chargers beat Denver 28-12. The two cellar dwellers in the AFC East came up with victories. Buffalo got it's first win of the season beating the New York Jets 27-20 as rookie running back Buddy *Young gained 167 yards on the ground for the Bills. After starting the season 0-5, the Miami Dolphins beat New England 24-7 for their second straight victory. The 24 year old, who was signed as a free agent after leading Dallas to the league title last year, scored 30 points and added 11 rebounds as the Warriors thumped Chicato 115-74. In all, six Philadelphia players scored in double figures. In other action, Layton's former team, the Dallas Chaparrals, came out on the shortend of an 84-72 score at Milwaukee. Forward Goodwin Wozniak led the Hawks with 15 points while Daniel Swanson and Wesley Hall added 14 each. Kaanan Gochneaur had 27 points and Hec Dunkel 20 to lead Providence past George *Mikan and the Indianapolis Olympians 100-81. Mikan scored 29 points in a losing cause for Indy before leaving the game late in the 4th quarter with a shoulder injury. Elsewhere, Justin Hild had 22 points and 9 boards as Syracuse won in Buffalo by an 86-79 count while in Kansas City Zach Rivera and Trevor Presgraves combined for 49 points to lead visiting Kentucky past the Kings 101-86. Taylor was expecting to get his Stanley Cup ring prior to the game and then suit up for the champion Detroit Red Wings as they faced a team of all-stars comprised of players from the other 5 clubs in the league in the first official all-star game. Instead, last week Taylor learned he had been dealt from the Wings to Boston in exchange for winger Bep Guidilon. Taylor led all players in scoring during last years playoffs, tallying 15 points after a stellar regular season that saw him collect 53 points on the season. Because the allstar team was announced prior to the trade it appeared Taylor would not be playing until his new Boston teammate Milt Schmidt was slashed by Bill Gadsby of Chicago in an exhibition contest over the weekend. Schmidt will miss the contest freeing the spot for Taylor and he will get his Stanley Cup ring with the rest of the Red Wings tonight. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL OFFSEASON FAIN AND THOMSON ARE FAVOURITES FOR AL ROOKIE OF THE YEAR The parade of major league baseball offseason awards begins tomorrow when the American League Rookie of the Year is unveiled. Unlike the National League, which was just booming with decent quality newcomers, the junior circuit newcomer award is a two horse race between Ferris Fain and Bobby Thomson. Fain, a 26 year old first baseman, was selected second overall last winter by the White Sox. He hit a respectable .271 with 10 homers and 61 rbi's in 146 games. Thomson was taken 9th overall by the Tigers in last year's draft. The 23 year outfielder was eased into the starting lineup and as a result played just 119 games. He hit .295 with 11 homers and 63 rbi's. Other long shot candidates include Detroit second baseman Joe Wood, a 28 year old who has been in the Tigers system since 1943 and had 49 games of major league experience entering this season. As the everyday second sacker for Detroit Wood hit .274 with a pair of homers and 47 rbi's. He also had 27 doubles. Pitcher Bud Byerly actually spent time in three organizations this season. In the final weeks of spring training the Cardinals dealt him to Detroit and he was in the Tigers rotation until a July trade to the Chicago White Sox. For the season the 26 year old was 9-14 with a 5.13 era. The final long shot candidate is Athletics reliever Clem Dreisewerd. Originally signed by Boston in 1944, the 31 year old was released by the Red Sox 2 years later after just 8 major league innings and several injuries. The A's signed him and converted him to a reliever. After making the big club out of spring training he led the team with 13 saves and was 2-4 with a 4.53 era.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE PACKERS COMEBACK SLAYS LIONS The Green Bay Packers scored 21 unanswered points in the final 9 minutes of the game to beat the Detroit Lions 38-24 in Monday Night Football. Jordan Montana had a strong game at quarterback for the Pack, passing for 290 yards and 3 touchdowns but once again it was running back Tony *Canadeo who stole the show. In addition to scoring two of the 4th quarter touchdowns, *Canadeo ran for 70 yards and had 6 catches for an additional 67 yards. The Lions built a 24-17 lead despite the fact that starting QB Bob *Waterfield left the game when he reaggravated a knee injury on the first series. Backup Billy Campbell stepped in without missing a beat and passed for 295 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The victory improves the Packers record to 6-1, best in either conference with a home game against struggling Minnesota next week. The 3-4 Lions visit Chicago next Sunday. The University of Texas, led by Heisman Trophy candidate QB Bobby *Layne, is the class of the loop at 4-0 and ranked 4th in the polls. After a tuneup win over lightly regarded Texas Tech, the Longhorns have beaten a decent Pacific Coast Conference club in 2-2 Oregon and then followed that up with successive wins over top 10 schools. First it was a 31-7 victory over then number 4 North Carolina and last week Texas hammered 8th ranked Oklahoma 62-13. Another top 20 opponent looms on the horizon this week for Bobby *Layne's squad as the Longhorns open the conference schedule with a game against 4-0 and 19th ranked Arkansas. SMU at number 4 and 11th ranked Rice round out the SWC representation in the top 20. They will square off this weekend in the conference opener for each school. The only new entry in the top 20 this week is Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets improved to 3-0 with a 17-0 shutout of VMI last week. Georgia Tech had previously beaten SEC rivals Tulane and Tennessee. Code:

A sold out crowd was on hand at Detroit's Olympia Stadium to witness the Red Wing players being awarded their Stanley Cup rings prior to the start of the game that featured the NHL's finest on the same ice surface for just the second time in history. The only previous all-star game was a one-time affair a decade ago when the league organized a game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and stars from the other five teams to benefit Leaf forward Ace Bailey, who had been seriously injured in an on-ice incident earlier in the season. The NHL decide to test the idea of having the defending Stanley Cup champion meet stars from the other five teams this season and judging by the success it will certainly become an annual event to kick off the new season. The Wings took an early lead just three and a half minutes into the game when defenseman Jack Stewart, who tallied just 6 goals all of last season, scored on a screen shot from the point. The All-Stars got the equalizer in the second period when the Bentley brothers combined for a power play marker. New York Ranger Grant Warwick would score the final goal for the All-Stars, also on the power play early in the third period. The regular season opens Wednesday with Detroit hosting the Chicago Black Hawks. Thursday the Montreal Canadiens host the Rangers. Boston and Toronto get into action over the weekend. Code:

Selected second overall in last year's draft, the 26 year old Fain played 146 games for the White Sox this past season, hitting .271 with 10 homers and 61 rbi's. Today the National League Rookie of the Year will be announced from a deep crop of candidates. The favourites include three Brooklyn Dodgers players: - Jackie Robinson, who not only broke the color barrier but also finished second in the majors with 30 stolen bases while batting .263 - pitcher Rex Barney who was 13-12 with a 3.33 era - outfielder Carl Furillo who hit .318 with 8 homers and 59 rbi's. Other candidates include Cincinnati pitcher Art Houtteman, who was 14-12 with a 4.49 era in 34 starts for the Reds and outfielder Andy Pafko of the World Champion Chicago Cubs. Pafko hit .307 with 6 homers and 42 rbi's. NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION STEAMROLLERS WIN SECOND STRAIGHT Guard Jim *Pollard scored 7 of his 17 points in overtime to lead the Providence Steamrollers past the Syracuse Nationals 107-103. Back-up guard Ben Gosford had the hot hand for Providence, pouring in 19 points including 3-for-4 from three point land to lead the Steamrollers in scoring. Justin Rhoad led the Nationals with 24 points. Providence improves to 2-0 while Syracuse drops to 1-1. Elsewhere, Indianapolis is also 2-0 after beating Kansas City 88-81. Olympians center George *Mikan, who was league MVP last season, did play 16 minutes despite a shoulder injury suffered in the season opener. The big center scored 12 points and was one of 6 Indianapolis players in double figures. Dallas beat New Orleans 100-89 as the Jazz entered the post Cameron Belli era. Chaps center Stu Granger was hurt early in the third quarter and did not return. The Fort Wayne Pistons scored 39 points in the third quarter en route to a 106-79 blowout of the St Louis Bombers. Forward A.H. Morris had a big day for the winners, scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. He also had 4 steals and 2 blocked shots. The New York Knickerbockers hung on to beat the Bullets 87-85 in Baltimore. Thal Butler paced the Knicks with 21 points while center Leonard Loch had 15 boards. CHAPS SIGN FREE AGENT *HOEFNER Dallas has agreed to a 1 year deal with former Buffalo guard Adolph *Hoefner. The four year veteran played 69 games for the Braves last year averaging 6.8 ppg. He was selected 8th overall by Minneapolis out of Western Kentucky in the 1943 draft and spent 3 seasons as a backup with the Lakers before moving to Buffalo. With rookie pivot Ray *Ellefson sidelined for at least a week with a strained hamstring, the Kansas City Kings inked 14 year pro Noah Zerzan. Bothered by injuries last season, Zerzan played just 25 games in New Orleans socring 8.6 ppg while averaging 7.0 rebounds. Prior to signing with the Jazz he spent 13 seasons split between Milwaukee and Fort Wayne. He was a first round pick out of Georgia in 1933 and has played 902 pro games, averaging 9.8 ppg and 7.3 rpg for his career. This should be another 20 plus victory season as they placed 3 players on the preseason all-conference team including senior center Ed *Mikan, who is the younger brother of NBA MVP George *Mikan. 2- WESTERN KENTUCKY: The Hilltoppers run of 6 straight NCAA appearances may be in jeopardy with the loss of 7 players from last year's squad. Junior guard Job Derosier is the only returning starter but a strong freshman class led by 7'0" center Mike Baumann will keep the Hilltoppers competitive. 3- TOLEDO: A young club with plenty of talent led by forward Elliott Maxwell, a preseason all-conference selection. With two sophomores and two juniors in the starting lineup the Rockets may be a year away from challenging for their second ever conference title. 4- RICHMOND: Plenty to get excited about in Richmond where the Spiders are coming off of back to back sweet 16 appearances and their first conference title in school history. Senior guard Dick *Schrider averaged nearly 14 points per game last season and likely belongs on the preseason all-conference team. 5- JACKSONVILLE: The Dolphins are coming off a dismal 1-13 conference record last season. The good news is all the key players are back from last season including their top scorers in senior guard Amel Spitler and forward Thomas Lopez. 6- OHIO: The Bobcats won just 6 conference games each of the past 3 seasons. The knock on Ohio is a lack of scoring as only junior forward Dan Boles has any consistancy in that department. 7- ARKANSAS STATE: After a 17 win season two years ago the Indians dropped to 8-22 inlcuding just 3-11 in conference last season. This could be another long year as they have no returning starters and 5 freshman and 4 sophomores on the roster. 8- GEORGIA STATE: Won 18 games last season and got their first ever postseason invitation with a trip to the NIT. However, the Panthers graduated four starters from that team and are back to square one. TIGERFAN'S SPORTING DAILY : WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 15, 1947
BOXING SUGAR RAY ROBINSON DEFENDS WELTERWEIGHT TITLE Sugar Ray Robinson scored an easy 6th round knock victory in his title bout at Madison Square Garden against Los Angeles journeyman Jimmy Doyle. The win improves Robinson's record to 14-1-1 while Doyle falls to 16-6. Next up for Sugar Ray will be a bout with European champion Felix Wouters on November 6th. Following that Robinson will face a stiff challenge when he meets number one contender Johnny Bratton at Madison Square Garden in December. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL ROBINSON WINS NL ROOKIE OF YEAR AWARD Brooklyn Dodgers second baseman Jackie Robinson was named the National League's rookie of the year. In addition to the tremendous challenge of breaking baseball's color barrier, the 28 year old hit .263 with 15 homers and 68 rbi's. He also finished second in the National League in stolen bases with 30. Defensively, Robinson's .979 fielding percentage was 5th best in the League. Robinson narrowly outpointed 22 year old teammate Rex Barney for the rookie honours. Barney, who pitched 8 innings for the Dodgers the previous season, began the year in Brooklyn's rotation and started 41 games, going 13-12 with a 3.33 era. A third Brooklyn player, outfielder Carl Furillo also received some support from the voters. Furillo led all rookies with 140 hits and a .318 batting average. The only non-Dodger to get a vote was Chicago outfielder Andy Pafko. The 26 year old finally made the majors full-time after 3 seasons in AAA. He hit .307 in 138 games with 6 homers and 42 rbi's. Pafko also drove in 5 runs during the Cubs 4 game World Series sweep of Cleveland. Tomorrow the gold glove awards will be handed out. Code:
FINAL VOTES FOR NL ROOKIE OF THE YEAR Jackie Robinson Bkn 5 Rex Barney Bkn 4 Carl Furillo Bkn 2 Andy Pafko Chc 2 WINGS SET TO BEGIN CUP DEFENSE TONIGHT The National Hockey League season gets underway this evening with one game as the defending champion Detroit Red Wings host Chicago. The Red Wings return most of the core players from the championship club with one notable exception. Center Billy Taylor, who led the team in scoring with 53 points, was dealt to Boston last week for young winger Bep Guidolin. However, with rookies Jim McFadden and Red Kelly the Wings feel they have enough depth at center. The big line for Detroit should consist of Sid Abel between Ted Lindsay and second year winger Gordie Howe. United in the playoffs last season the trio combined for 29 points and quickly was dubbed "The Production Line." The defense is still anchored by all-star Bill Quackenbush with Jack Stewart and Leo Reise providing support. Rookie Marty Pavelich won a job at training camp. Between the pipes 21 year old Harry Lumley prepares for his third NHL campaign. After finishing dead last a year ago the Chicago Black Hawks shook things up with a huge trade with Toronto. The Hawks sent league scoring leader Max Bentley to Toronto with two minor leaguers in exchange for 5 Leaf regulars. The result is the Hawks certainly have more depth than they did a season ago but a team that had trouble scoring is now without a player who produced 89 points a year ago. Ex-Leafs Gaye Stewart, Bud Poile and Gus Bodnar will help holdovers Bill Mosienko, Roy Conacher and Doug Bentley with the offense but the Black Hawks defense and goaltending are huge question marks. After sharing the job a year ago Emile Francis is now the full-time goaltender but his defense aside from Bill Gadsby is suspect to say the least. NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION ST LOUIS BOMBS CINCINNATI 101-49 In one of the most lobsided games in league history the St Louis Bombers hammered the Cincinnati Royals 101-49 in NBA action. Mac Thorpe lead the Bombers attack with 33 points while Dave Askew added 18 points and 9 assists. In the second half St Louis outscored Cincinnati 54-17. In other action John *Abramovic had 19 points and 10 rebounds to pace the New York Knicks past Indianapolis 88-84. Noah Baldin had 27 points but it wasn't enough as his Fort Wayne Pistons fell 91-87 in Syracuse. Defending champion Dallas built a 27-13 first quarter lead on Milwaukee and never looked back in a 103-74 victory over the Hawks. Vin Concepcion had 19 points to help power visiting Chicago past Baltimore 90-81. Buffalo won 84-79 in Minneapolis spoiling the Lakers home opener. Miguel Dominguez led the Braves with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Finally Kentucky centers Jason Tello and Hank *Beenders did an excellent job keeping John Layton in check as the Colonels topped Philadelphia 80-74. After scoring 30 points in his debut for Philadelphia, Layton was held to just 10 points by Kentucky. In fact the Irish, along with Alabama, are the only two time winners of the National Championship. Penn State used to be a national power in the 1930's but this decade the Nittany Lions have just one postseason appearance to their credit. Code:

The concern may be solved this season as Notre Dame looks prepared for a long run in March. Center Ryan Gardner was named national freshman of the year last season and was one of three Irish players named to the preseason All-Conference squad. Forwards Leo *Barnhorst and George *Ratkovicz each averaged over 14 points per game last year as sophomores. Junior guard Ronald Jenkins quarterbacks the offense while highly touted freshman Cody Anderson will be the only newcomer to the starting five. 2- PENN STATE: The past decade has been tough on the once proud Nittany Lions, a school that has not won more than 11 games each of the past three seasons. There may be some good news this year as all five starters are back and if Penn State is ever going to recapture the glory of the 1930's this would be the season to start on that path. 3- MEMPHIS: The Tigers are the only school in the conference to never play an NCAA tournament game but that could change this season as senior forwards Shannon Slay and Colt Greenwood are counted on to lead them to a secon straight winning season for the first time in school history. 4- PITTSBURGH: Just two years removed from a final four appearance, the Panthers won 16 games a year ago but return most of the key pieces from that squad. The leaders will be senior guard Herm *Schaefer, the most dangerous outside shooter in the league, and junior forward Colin DeGala. 5- DETROIT: After three straight years of postseason action the Titans fell to 9-20 overall and won just 3 conference games last year. Still a young squad, the Titans do have three returning starters but most of the talk centers on freshman guard True Clark and 7'0" sophomore Johnny Drummond. 6- MARQUETTE: It has been 5 years since the Golden Eagles finished above .500 or made a postseason appearance. Having a healthy Danny Shippee at point guard will help. The senior averaged 12.7 ppg two years ago but was bothered by injuries much of last season. Freshman power forward Jay Mumpas will see plenty of playing time but will go through some growing pains. 7- LOUISVILLE: Back to back 17-victory seasons and trips to the NIT have the excitement back in Louisville after three straight losing seasons. Junior guards Rashad Frazier and Julian McKinney will have to carry the Cardinals because all of the experienced big men are gone. With no talented big man to rely on it will likely be a long season for Louisville. 8- CINCINNATI: For the first time in 10 years the Bearcats were not invited to a postseason tournament. It will likely be more of the same this year as only two starters return and there is not a lot of depth on the roster.
