1948-49 Offseason News and Notes

This is an exceptionally deep draft. There are several franchise level players available, and good players go 3 rounds deep.

The Detroit Tigers pick 1st, and they select, none other than Mickey Mantle. You know what that means. Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle are now teammates. They also have Joe Adcock, who will be the 3rd in an amazing potential outfield. The Tigers don’t have much else, but it’s a hell of a group to build around.

Eddie Matthews goes 2nd to the Cardinals, while the Braves take an excellent Japanese import named Shigeru Sugi****a, who looks like a franchise changing pitcher!

No entries into this years Hall of Fame. Babe Herman was "nominated" by the game, but he was denied. All players I deny may get in at a later date, but I am trying to be strict with who gets in.

1949 Regular Season

What a start to the season for the Chicago White Sox. With players like Ted Williams, Yogi Berra, Richie Ashburn, Ralph Kiner and Eishiro Yoshie (last year’s AL Rookie of the Year), they have been underachieving for a while. 33-8 is there record on June 1st. Clearly the best team in baseball.

The first place White Sox just made a head scratching move.

Ralph Kiner
goes to Boston, the price for the White Sox to add a SS. The price was too high. Kiner was having a great year, and he is tied with former teammate Ted Williams with the highest power rating in baseball. Rosen is a huge upgrade defensively over incumbent Lou Klein, but their bats are about the same.

Jackie Robinson has been traded to the NY Giants.

Cleveland
has a 2B named Frank Gustine, who makes 10 grand more then Jackie, and was putting up roughly the same numbers in less at bats. This makes sense for them to drop a salary, but they didn’t get a lot back. Jackie becomes a depth piece for the Giants, backing up 2nd, 3rd and LF.

As we enter September, the big story remains the Chicago White Sox. With a record of 92-36, they have their eye on finishing the season with the best record ever. The 1938 Browns went 144-40. That’s pretty good. Those Browns went onto their 3rd straight World Series. With only 4 losses to spare, that’s a tall task, but this is a great White Sox team(would be better with Kiner!).

The White Sox end up falling short of the Browns mark, but their 108 wins is the 2nd most all-time! They will take on the defending World Champion Brooklyn Dodgers who won a pennant race against their cross town rival Giants.

1949 World Series

I believe the White Sox are baseball’s best team right now. They have better hitting, great pitching and star power. The Dodgers however possess the better starting pitching, including the probably 1949 Rube Waddell winner, and are the defending champs.

Despite walking 7, Lou Brissie and his sparkling 1.79 ERA,gets the job done, allowing just one run in the opening game, 3-1 Dodgers win.

Robin Roberts dominates the Sox in game two, and the Dodgers are proving their arms are mightier then the Sox bats. 5-1 win and a 2-0 series lead heading back to Brooklyn.

The White Sox come out strong, scoring 3 times in the first, capped of by a Sid Gordon 2 run shot. White Sox ace Yoshie can’t hold it though, giving up 8 runs in just over 4 innings. That was enough, and the Dodgers win game three 8-4.

Ted Williams homers in the first, but that didn’t matter. The Dodgers score 4 of their own in their half of the first, and lead after 6-2 three. It was enough. They hold on to win their 2nd straight World Series with a 6-4 win!

1949 Offseason News and Notes

St. Louis takes OF Bob Hazle with the first pick in a bit of a underwhelming draft. Ernie Banks gets taken at 4 by the Red Sox, kind of a steal there.

Two of the greatest ever, who happened to be teammates for most of their careers, Lou Gehrig and Mule Suttles enter the Hall of Fame together. Kind of fitting.

The 1950 season will be the 50th of this replay. So, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of my MLB league, here are a few achievements and milestones, similar to what i posted for the 25th anniversary.

pretty cool stuff man...love the half century team.

What happened to Rogers Hornsby in your dynasty. So far in mine, he has easily been the best player thru the first 20 seasons. 8 straight best hitter awards, 4 straight triple crowns.

Well, Hornsby was really good. He is in the Hall of Fame, and did make the half century team.

.341 career batting average(6th all time), 267 home runs(14th), 1594 RBI's(10th), 3225 hits(9th), 140 WAR(2nd). 5 MVP's and 13 gold gloves! Played his whole career in Brooklyn, 1914-37.
