TIGERFAN'S SPORTING DAILY : THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 25, 1947
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL SHOWDOWN IN THE WINDY CITY BUCS OUT OF WIGGLE ROOM AS THEY PREPARE FOR 4 GAME SET WITH CUBS The Pittsburgh Pirates know exactly what they need to accomplish if they wish to make a second straight appearance in the World Series. The Bucs need to win 4 straight games at Chicago beginning today and then beat the Cubs in a 1-game playoff on Monday. Chicago clinched at least a tie for the National League pennant with a 9-1 shellacking of Brooklyn at Wrigley Field yesterday. Bill Nicholson hit a 3-run homer during a 7-run 7th inning as the Cubs put the game out of reach. Nicholson also doubled and tripled on the day. The Pittsburgh Pirates stayed alive by beating Philadelphia 4-2. Tony Cuccinello hit a 2-run homer and Cliff Melton won his 17th game of the season for the Bucs. In other National League action Johnny Mize homered twice as Cincinnati dumped St Louis 7-4 while Boston beat New York 6-2. AMERICAN LEAGUE With the pennant already decided all eyes are on Ted Williams' attempt to win the triple crown. Williams went 2-for-2 with a homer and 3 rbi's to pace the Red Sox past Detroit 9-1. His 36 homers easily give Williams the longball crown. Because teammate Johnny Hudson went just 1-for-3 Williams leads the batting race by .004 and his 108 rbi's are one more than Wally Judnich of St Louis. Judnich drove in a pair of runs yesterday as the Browns lost 7-4 in Chicago. In the other American League contests Bill Lohrman had a 1-hit shutout through 7 innings before the New York Yankees exploded for 7 runs in the 8th to beat Lohrman's Cleveland club 7-1. In Philadelphia, Jimmy Bloodworth hit a pinch-hit rbi single in the top of the 10th to lift Washington past the A's 4-3. Code:

Expect that trend to end this season as the veteran squad returns 4 starters including pre-season all-conference selection Dick *McGuire. The junior guard averaged 11.3 ppg as a sophomore and he, along with senior guard Paul *Armstrong and junior center Al *Miksis could lead the Hoosiers to their 5th ever final four appearance. 2- ILLINOIS :After two straight 30+ victory seasons the Illini dipped to 23-10 a year ago. They have a good mix of veterans and youth including highly touted freshman PF Tom Reis, who should be a starter this season. The knock on Illinois will again be size, with Reis the only player over 6-6 who will see much playing time. 3- PURDUE : The Boilermakers tied a school record for wins with 23 a year ago and won a game in the NCAA tournament for just the second time in school history. Senior PF Michael Arrowood led the school with 15.6 ppg a year ago and will once again be the key player but he is surrounded by a veteran cast that saw plenty of playing time a year ago. In addition, the Purdue recruiting class is considered one of the best in the nation. 7'1" center Julian Lebo from Rockford, Illinois and 6'6" forward John *Pilch from Narrowsburg New York are the prize recruits. 4- OHIO STATE :The Buckeyes won 55 games over the last two seasons but they are practically starting over with the loss of first round NBA picks Paul *Huston and Arnie *Risen. Senior center Les *Pugh and guard Alex Silva will be forced to take on much bigger roles this season while Roy *Pugh will join his brother in the starting lineup. 5- MICHIGAN : After making 9 straight postseason tournament appearances the Wolverines have missed the postseason 4 of the last 6 years and have not played in the NCAA tournament since 1940. Malcolm *McMullan and Al *Cervi give the Wolverines two very talented players but the key may be the performance of freshman Bam Gordon who will likely start at point guard. The 5'9" jitterbug from Cincinnati's Deer Park High School was one of the most sought after players in the nation. Another freshman to keep an eye on is Pontiac, Michigan SG Michael xScott. 6- NORTHWESTERN : Otto *Graham led the Wildcats to a 16-13 season, just their second winning season in school history. With Graham graduated and playing in the NFL it remains to be seen if the rest of the Wildcats can build on their modest success of a year ago. Three starters return including senior guard Christopher Aderhold who averaged over 14 ppg a year ago. 7- IOWA : Replacing All-American Ray *Ellefson will be a tough task for the Hawkeyes, who reached the Sweet 16 a year ago. Junior guard Grady Wiggins enteres his third season as a starter and he was named to the All-Conference preseason team. He could contend for the conference scoring title. Senior center Dylon Williams is a monster on the boards but the supporting cast is suspect. Freshman PF John xDuran from Champaign, Illinois is a player to watch. 8- WISCONSIN : The Badgers suffered through the worst season in school history with just 11 wins a year ago. Sophomore forward Thomas McGarrah has a bright future but this could be another long season for his club. 9- MINNESOTA : With just 1 NCAA appearance (in 1939) and no postseason in 6 years there has been little to cheer about in Minnesota. Junior forward Henri Johnson is the closest thing the Gophers have to a star player but he will be lucky to average double figures in scoring. A lack of offensive finish will doom Minnesota to the depths of the Big 10 yet again. 10- MICHIGAN STATE : The Spartans completed a miracle season in 1943-44 winning their only conference tournament and getting a victory in their first ever NCAA tourney game. Unfortunately since then they have suffered through three straight 9 win seasons and things do not look any better this year. With 6 freshman and 2 sophomores on the roster you would like to think the future looks bright. Unfortunately none of those 8 players look particularily promising. Senior shooting guard William Watson will be a 4 year starter this season PRESEASON BIG 10 ALL CONFERENCE TEAM G Dick *McGuire Indiana G Grady Wiggins Iowa C Les *Pugh Ohio State F Malcolm *McMullan Michigan F Michael Arrowood Purdue BOXING TURPIN RETAINS BRITISH MIDDLEWEIGHT CROWN Randy Turpin retained his British Middleweight title with a split decision victory over challenger Billy Bird. Turpin, who knocked out Bird a year ago to claim the then-vacant title, improves to 23-4-2 with the victory. Turpin, who is ranked the 12th best middleweight in the world at this time, briefly held the European title before losing to Marcel Cerdan in January. Bird is 34-9. Another middleweight who may eventually get a shot at the European title made his pro debut last night. German Gustav Scholz scored an unanimous decision in his 8 round debut against fellow countryman Rudi Pepper. In one other middleweight fight of note, Roy Wouters successfully defended his Canadian middleweight title with a unanimous decision over George Ross. Wouters claimed the then-vacant Canadian belt with a decision over Ross last month. Other middleweights of note to fight yesterday: Giovanni xRago earned his first pro victory with a unanimous decision over Cuban Wilfredo Miro. xRago, from Bari, Italy is now 1-3 as a pro while Miro drops to 16-21. Utica, New York's Charlie xSmith saw his record drop to 2-2 after being ko'd by Steve Belloise in the 5th round of their bout. Belloise, who recently took former champion Jake LaMotta to a decision, was too powerful for his young opponent. Belloise is 21-7 for his career and considered one of the top 20 middleweights in the world. Finally Chicago streetfighter Rocco xDiSaldo drops to 0-4 with a split decision loss to Al Priest. Priest, a 27 year old Massachusetts native, is 17-10 as a pro.

Just thought I would add this for anyone unsure.
A * beside the last name of a football or basketball player means he is based on a real-life player. A x before the last name of a player means he is a board member created ancestor that was added into the league. All basketball and football players without an x or a * prior to their last name are game created fictional players. All athletes in the other sports (hockey, baseball, golf, horse racing, auto racing, boxing) are real players either imported by the game or created by me. I got a pm questioning the *'s so I thought I would clarify.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL CUBS CLINCH PENNANT! A 10th inning rbi single from catcher Tony Giuliani gave the Chicago Cubs a 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates and allowed the Cubs to clinch their 3rd National League Pennant in 4 years. The Pirates appeared to be in control when Billy Myers delivered a pinch-hit homer in the top of the 8th to give the Bucs a 3-2 lead. However, the Cubs tied it in the bottom half of the inning with a sacrifice fly against reliever Jim Tobin. In the 9th the Pirates again took the lead on a solo homerun, this one off the bat of Bob Elliott but again the Cubs answered when Ken O'Dea delivered an rbi single with 2 out in the bottom of the ninth. After a 1-2-3 10 for Pittsburgh Rip Russell delivered a one-out pinch-hit double to set the stage for Giuliani's game winning knock. In other National League games the Giants beat Cincinnati 6-1 as New York attempts to avoid losing 100 games. With 3 to play New York remains stuck on 97 losses. Stan Hack drove in 3 runs as the Dodgers beat Philadelphia 8-5 while Johnny Hopp had 4 hits and 3 rbi's as St Louis dumped Boston 11-5. WILLIAMS STILL CHASING TRIPLE CROWN Ted Williams is inching closer in his bid to become just the third player in league history to win the triple crown. Only George Stone of the Boston Braves in 1913 and the Yankees Babe Ruth in 1926 have managed to lead their league in batting average, homers and rbi's in the same season. Ruth was the only one to lead all three categories outright as Stone tied for the rbi lead. Rogers Horsnby came very close in 1923, missing by 1 home run. Williams had the day off yesterday as his Boston Red Sox were hammered 10-0 in Philadelphia. Teammate Johnny Hudson, who is challenging Williams for the batting title, went 2-for-3 and now trails Ted by .002 in the batting race. Chet Morgan's pinch-hit homer in the 11th inning gave the St Louis Browns a 3-1 win over the Yankees in New York. Browns outfielder Wally Judnich, who trails Williams by 1 in the rbi race, did not improve upon his total. Elsewhere, Detroit blasted Washington 8-1 while Cleveland tuned up for the World Series with a 12-4 victory in Chicago. Bob Feller picked up his 15th win of the season while Lou Boudreau had 3 of the Indians 16 hits. Code:

NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION SEYMOUR RETURNS TO KINGS Veteran guard Mike Seymour has been invited to camp by the team he began his NBA career with 12 years ago. The Kansas City Kings, who drafted Seymour 10th overall in 1935, have signed the free agent. Seymour spent 4 seasons as a starter in the Kings backcourt before moving on to Cincinnati for 4 years. He would also spend 2 and a half seasons in Dallas before having stops in Indianapolis and Kentucky the past 2 seasons. He is a veteran of 842 NBA games and played at New York University before joining the NBA. COLLEGE BASKETBALL BIG WEST CONFERENCE PREVIEW A small conference that rarely sends more than it's tournament champion to postseason play. San Jose State and Idaho have been the dominant teams in recent years. The Vandals are the only Big West team to win a tournament game, stealing one in the NCAA's in 1942 and winning the NIT championship the following year. San Diego State center John *Mandic is the best pro prospect in the conference. Code:

They hope freshman guard Kevin Beverly can turn things around. The Los Angeles native has outstanding skills on the court but his poor grades scared away the major schools. Preseason all-conference selection Martin Hart will provide veteran leadership. 3- NEVADA : In Cale Lovridge and Miles Smith the Wolfpack have by far the best backcourt tandem in the conference. Whitten, missed half of last season with an injury but appears to be 100%. Up front Nevada is expecting big things from freshman center David Kendall, a 6'11" force from Fort Yates, North Dakota. 4- BOISE STATE : Senior center William Fuller and PF Thomas Barr enter their third year as starters with the Broncos but have yet to enjoy a winning season. Boise State has never played an NCAA or NIT tournament game. 5- PACIFIC : With four starters back Pacific should be much improved from the 10-19 season they suffered through a year ago. In seniors Joseph Tanner, Wendell Gardner and Tyler Dockal the Tigers have three terrific outside shooters. 6- IDAHO : The greatest moment in conference history remains the Vandals 1942 run to the NIT title. The season's club will be the youngest in conference history as it is composed of 10 freshman. The veterans on the roster, 1 senior and 2 juniors, averaged a combined 5 minutes of playing time per game a year ago. Forward Eldrick High from North Pole, Arkansas and guard Jon King from Las Vegas are the freshman to watch. 7- CAL POLY : The Mustangs return a veteran roster but aside from guard/forward Tyler Younger there is not a lot of talent. 8- UNLV : The Runnin' Rebels made the NIT tournament a year ago after a 20 win season. However, with all 5 starters graduated it is back to square one for UNLV. Sophomore guard Sean Berl looks ready to guide the offense but this team is too inexperienced to contend. BIG WEST PRESEASON ALL CONFERENCE TEAM G Tyler Younger Cal Poly G Miles Smith Nevada F Martin Hart San Jose State F Haven Hulse San Diego State C John *Mandic San Diego State NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE SEVERAL ROOKIES POISED TO MAKE AN IMPACT IN NHL With NHL training camps preparing to open here is a quick look at some of the new faces who may make an impact in the league this year. The defending Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings could have as many as three rookies in their lineup. A leading candidate for rookie of the year honours is Leonard 'Red' Kelly. The 20 year old from Simcoe looks like a future allstar. A tough but clean rearguard, Kelly was a championship boxer at Toronto's St Michael's College in addition to an outstanding hockey player. He should play a big role on the Wings this season. Other Detroit rookies to watch include forwards Jim McFadden and Don Morrison. Born in Belfast 27 year ago, McFadden is a veteran of the Pacific and Quebec leagues. He started last season with Ottawa of the Quebec Senior League and after scoring 34 points in 16 games was moved up to Buffalo of the AHL. McFadden had 19 goals in 31 games for the Bisons and appears ready to make an impact with the Red Wings. Morrison spent the past two season with the Omaha Knights of the USHL where he led the league in scoring with 76 points last season. Toronto's best newcomer should be forward Sid Smith. After starting the season with the Quebec Aces of the Quebec Senior league, the Leafs signed the 22 year old and placed him with the Pittsburgh Hornets of the AHL. He scored 12 goals and 5 assists in 23 games in Pittsburgh. A Toronto native, Smith starred for the Oshawa Generals in junior. The Boston Bruins are excited about American Pete Babando. The Pennsylvania native spent last season in Hershey, racking up 45 points in 51 games. Montreal has a veteran squad that will be tough to crack but winger Jacques Locas looks like he should make the team. The 21 year old had 35 points for the Montreal Royals of the Quebec Senior league last season. He also scored 11 goals in 14 games as the Royals won the Allan Cup, emblematic of senior hockey supremacy in Canada. Rebuilding Chicago expects big things from winger Metro Prystai. Just 19, the the Yorkton, Saskatchewan native should get plenty of ice time with the Hawks this season. An icon in his province, Prystai led his Moose Jaw Canucks to three straight Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League championships and a trip to the Memorial Cup finals. The New York Rangers have no rookies of note this year.

I'll take Tampa -1 at Dallas. QB *Christman is coming off a strong Monday effort and the 0-4 Cowboys are terrible. I'll take Miami at home over the 1-3 Colts. The Dolphins are 0-4 but I am getting 8 points and we should be able to cover. The Bears have burned me before but I think the champs will regroup and beat San Franciso. The 49ers are 5 point dogs but Sid *Luckman is due for a huge game at home. Finally I will make one more selection in hopes I can at least win one this week. Monday night the Seahawks are home to Minnesota. I'll give the 5 points and take the Seahawks. Both clubs are 2-2.

Glenn Davis, who I really didn't know much about until this dynasty began, died today at age 80. Thanks to TF for bringing him to my attention during last year's college football season.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WILLIAMS' TRIPLE CROWN CHANCES IMPROVE Boston Red Sox outfielder Ted Williams took a big step towards becoming just the third man in baseball history to win the Triple Crown with a 2 hit, 2-rbi game against Philadelphia. The Red Sox lost 7-4 but all eyes were focused on what Williams accomplished. The two hits increase his lead over teammate Johnny Hudson to .004 in the batting race. Hudson went 1-for-3 on the day. Williams drove in 2 runs giving him 110 on the season, 2 more than Wally Judnich of the Browns. Williams also hit his league leading 37th homer in the game and he has a 14 homer lead in that category. Judnich had 1 rbi as the Browns beat the Yankees 6-1. St Louis scored 5 times in the top of the 10th to break open what was a terrific pitching duel between Eddie Lopat and Marius Russo. In other American League action the White Sox beat World Series bound Cleveland 2-1 while Phil Cavarretta hit a pair of doubles and drove in 3 runs in Washington's 6-4 win at Detroit. Pittsburgh blasted Chicago 11-4 in National League play but it came a day too late as the Cubs had clinched the pennant by beating the Bucs the day before. Tony Cuccinello drove in 5 runs for the winners. In other National League action Les Webber pitched a 5-hit shutout as Brooklyn blanked Philadelphia, Joe Medwick's grand slam helped Cincinnati crush the Giants 9-4 and Ernie White won his 21st game of the season as St Louis beat Boston 4-3. Cards rookie Earl Torgeson hit his 18th homer of the season in the game. Code:

Always a solid team, Arizona will once again challenge for the conference title. The team leader will be senior forward Evan Abbott, a 3-year starter. 3- MONTANA: Coming off just the second 20-win season in school history many feel the Grizzlies are poised to win their first NCAA berth. 3 starters are back including preseason all-conference selections Rhema Hill and Brian McLaughlin. Add in freshman center Bob *Cope from Lipan, Texas and this should be the best Montana team ever. 4- NORTHERN ARIZONA : With 5 players who had significant minutes a year ago returning, the Lumberjacks have their eye set on a second trip to the postseason. Their only other appearance was an NIT bid in 1942. Senior center Lorenzo Nunez is the team leader but also look to sophomore guard Demarlo Haller to play a key role. 5- MONTANA STATE : The graduation of BJ Sanders, who hold school career records in virtually every category will hurt. Three starters are back but the Bobcats lack depth. 6- SOUTHERN UTAH : Sophomore PF Verel Smyers looks ready for a breakout season. However, there is very little experience returning from last season so it could be a long year for the Thunderbirds. 7- IDAHO STATE : The Bengals have not had a .500 or better record in conference play since winning their only title in 1941. 4 starters are back from last year's team unfortunately none of them are very good. 8- NEW MEXICO STATE : A 17-45 record against conference opponents over the past 4 seasons tells you everything you need to know about the Aggies. The 29 year old San Jose native, who is rated the 8th best flyweight in the world, was in complete control all night as he improved his post-war record to 17-4. With the loss Marino falls to 14-5. In other action promising Detroit middleweight Lester Felton improved to 2-0 as a pro with a 4th round knockout of Cleveland's Cassill Tate. A number of lightweights were in action yesterday. The winners include Lulu Constantino, who is rated 12th in his weight class. Constantino improved to 15-3 with an unanimous decision over Hartford native George Dunn. Mexico's Enrique Bolanos, who had a title shot against Ike Williams a year ago, improved to 16-2-1 with a second round knockout of Cuban Humberto Sierra. In England, Edward xDay earned his first pro victory after starting his career 0-2-1. The Poplar Windmill, as Day is known, scored a 6th round TKO over Ronnie James. James, a 30 year old from Wales, falls to 5-10-1. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WILLIAMS HAS 3 HITS IN RED SOX VICTORY Ted Williams virtually assured himself the triple crown with a 3-for-5 performance that included a 2-run homer in Boston's 9-3 victory over the Philadelphia Athletics. Williams is bidding to become just the third player in baseball history to lead his league in batting average, homers and rbi's all in the same season. With the World Series opponents already determined the rest of the league is just playing out the string this weekend. In the American League Detroit blanked Washington 3-0 thanks to a 3-hitter from pitcher Red Lynn. All the Detroit offense came on Joe Wood's 3-run pinch-hit homer in the 8th inning. The pennant winning Cleveland Indians beat Chicago 8-4 while New York trimmed St Louis 7-6 in the other games. In the National League the New York Giants avoided a 100-loss season by shutting out Cincinnati 2-0. Slim Emmerich scattered 8 hits for his first career shut out. Emmerich is 2-11 on the season. Elsewhere, Pittsburgh beat the Cubs 4-2, Brooklyn thumped Philadelphia 10-4 and the Cardinals beat the Braves 5-4 in 10 innings. Code:

The home win, in their season opener, may move the Tar Heels up from their preseason rank of 7th. Army is certain to drop out of the top ten after the defending National Champions were upset 17-14 on a last second Villanova field goal. In the SEC Tulane scored an upset victory over Alabama, trimming the Tide 17-16 while Mississippi improved to 2-0 in conference with a 20-16 victory at Florida. One other SEC game had Georgia Tech blasting Tennessee 30-0. In the Western Conference opener Wisconsin beat Purdue 31-24. Second ranked Michigan had little trouble with independant Michigan State, hammering the Spartans 44-0. Illinois beat Pittsburgh 36-7 but the rest of the conference was not as successful yesterday as Indiana lost 14-7 to Nebraska while Ohio State fell 30-3 to Missouri. USC and Stanford both posted victories in the Pacific Coast Conference. The Trojans dumped Washington State 28-7 while the Cardinal edged Idaho 13-10. The Southwest Conference is a perfect 12-0 after two weeks of non-conference games. Highlights yesterday included Texas blasting Oregon 38-0 behind the three touchdown performance from Longhorns running back Joe *Baumgardner. Heisman hopeful Bobby *Layne also had a strong game. Meanwhile Texas Christian shutout Oklahoma A&M 14-0 while Texas A&M shaded Texas Tech 16-13. Plenty of in-conference action for the 16 team Southern Conference. Certainly the big news for the conference was the Carolina win over Georgia but within the conference Duke, Maryland, Virgina Tech, Washington & Lee and William & Mary all won their conference openers. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WILLIAMS WINS TRIPLE CROWN Ted Williams became just the third man in major league history to win the triple crown. Williams went 1-for-3 as his Boston Red Sox lost 2-0 in the season finale against Philadelphia. Williams finishes the season with a .347 batting average, .008 ahead of teammate Johnny Hudson. Williams' 38 homers were 15 more than anyone else in the American League and with 112 rbi's he had 4 more than Wally Judnich of the Browns. Only George Stone of the Boston Braves in 1913 and the Yankees Babe Ruth in 1926 have managed to lead their league in batting average, homers and rbi's in the same season prior to Williams. Ruth was the only one to lead all three categories outright as Stone tied for the rbi lead. Rogers Horsnby came very close in 1923, missing by 1 home run. In other American League action on the seasons final day Washington scored 3 times in the tenth inning to beat Detroit 7-4, spoiling the Tigers hopes of a .500 season. The Yankees beat St Louis 6-5 while the White Sox beat Cleveland's b team 5-1. The pennant winning Indians rested virtually all of their starters in preparation for the World Series opener on Wednesday. The Indians opponents in the Series, the Chicago Cubs, had to put in a little extra duty against Pittsburgh before falling 6-4 in 11 innings. Meanwhile St Louis beat Boston 6-1 to sneak past the Phillies into third place after Philadelphia lost 10-2 to Brooklyn. The Tar Heels move up to number four but will face a stiff test next weekend when they travel to Texas to face the third ranked Longhorns. Losses dropped Georgia and Army out of the top 10. In their place are Oklahoma and Rice which move up from 12 and 13 respectively. A pair of 2-0 clubs are the two newcomers in the top 20: California debuts at number 18 after beating Navy 20-17 while Texas Christian blanked Oklahoma A&M 14-0 to claim the 19th spot. Kansas and Rutgers fall out of the top 20. Code:

The Cleveland victory leaves both clubs tied for first in the AFC North at 3-1. Cleveland had a 21-6 lead at the half but a spirited comeback nearly allowed the Ravens to pull the game out. Cincinnati and Pittsburgh are each a game back of the co-leaders in the AFC North after the Bengals scored a 10-7 victory at Three Rivers. Bud Rutledge and receiver Dralinn Moretti connected on a 19 yard touchdown strike midway through the fourth quarter for the winning score. Both Miami and Buffalo remain winless after losses to AFC South clubs yesterday. In Miami, the Indianapolis Colts beat the Dolphins 37-27 thanks to four Eric Poppinga touchdown passes while Houston beat the Bills 24-15. It was not a good day for anyone in the AFC East as the Jets and Patriots also lost. 13 fourth quarter points lifted the Titans past the Jets 25-14 while in Jacksonville, Jags running back Reggie Chancey ran for two touchdowns and caught a pass for a third one as the Jags hammered New England 42-16. The San Francisco 49ers defense made a statement in Chicago. The Niners forced 4 Chicago fumbles and sacked Bears QB Sid *Luckman 5 times, including 3 by DT Ray Steele in a 23-13 victory. The loss drops the Bears a game behind Green Bay after the Packers hammered the Rams in St Louis 47-16. RB Tony *Canadeo led the Green Bay attack with 177 yards rushing. It was a kicker's day in Detroit as all points came on field goals in the Lions 15-12 win over Arizona. Philadelphia has sole possession of the NFC East Division lead after beating Carolina 20-16. QB Ken Neal completed 22 of 30 passes for 195 yards and a pair of Philadelphia touchdowns. Atlanta remains atop the NFC South Division after a 34-17 victory over Washington. Falcons QB Arnie Herber tossed 4 touchdown passes in the win. His favourite target was Duane Whelihan who had 8 catches for 100 yards and 3 scores. New Orleans and Tampa kept pace with the Falcons. Two Ryan Boyette to Bob Sommer first-half touchdown passes lifted the Saints past the New York Giants 26-3. The Bucs beat Dallas 28-19 but may have lost QB Paul *Christman for a couple of weeks. Christman, who threw 3 touchdown passes in the win, left the game late in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury. Second overall pick Otto *Graham made his pro debut and completed his only pass attempt for a 17 yard gain. A decision on whether *Christman can play next week will be made Tuesday by the Bucs staff. If not *Graham will get his first NFL start. Nice, TCU up to #19 after a 2-0 start. Any idea how I'm doing in the two games thus far, or am I even playing this year?

You definately are playing but because you are not in the top 100 pro prospects at this point I do not have any stats for you. I sim the college games with a Quick play excel program that only gives me final scores. The individual player stats I take from the Total Pro Football top 100 prospect list and use them to work a story line to go with my college results. If Scott xThompson ever appears in the top 100 I then have some stats I can work with. At this point the TCU defense is getting most of the attention based on #2 overall prospect LB Cornell Jones and number 20 overall LB Larry Smith. Both are fictional players created by TPF. Arkansas next week could pose a real challenge. In real life TCU lost the game 6-0. Although in real life they started 0-1-1 with a 0-0 tie with Kansas before losing to Oklahoma A&M 14-7.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE LATE FIELD GOAL GIVES SEAHAWKS WIN Anthony Rice's 26 yard field goal with just under 5 minutes to play in the fourth quarter lifted the Seattle Seahawks to a 17-14 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in Monday Night Football action. The Vikings had taken a 14-0 lead on a Paul *Governali to Eric Kemoeatu 5 yard touchdown pass and a 1 yard run from Mike Bull but the Seahawks tied the game just before the half. First Marion *Motley capped an 81 yard drive with a 1 yard plunge and then with time running out in the first half Simeon Hill connected with Kelvin Roan on a 5 yard touchdown strike. Hill, in his second pro season, was starting in place of regualr Seahawks QB Doug Kooistra who missed the game with a leg injury. GRAHAM MAKE GET FIRST NFL START AGAINST CLEVELAND The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have not ruled out quarterback Paul *Christman starting next Sunday against the Cleveland Browns but do say there is a very good chance that second overall draft pick Otto *Graham will make his first NFL start. *Christman suffered a serious ankle sprain in the closing minutes of Tampa's win over Dallas on Sunday but he says he will be ready to play on Sunday. *Graham, a 2-sport star at Northwestern took over for *Christman in the Dallas game and attempted one pass, a 17 yard completion. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WORLD SERIES PREVIEW The World Series begins today in Cleveland with the Indians and Cubs meeting in a rematch of the 1941 classic series that went the full 7 games. 1941 was the only previous meeting between the two clubs who have a combined 9 World Series titles. Both have plenty of recent series experience as at least one of the two has participated in the last 4 World Series and 5 of the last 6. Cleveland has won the World Series three times, all in the past decade, beating the Cubs in 1941, the Cardinals in 1943 and the Pirates last season. The Cubs most recently won the series two years ago when they beat Washington in 1945. Previous Chicago victories came in 1938, 1935, 1932, 1908 and 1907. Here is each club's full postseason results: CLEVELAND INDIANS 1915 Pittsburgh, beat Cleveland 4 to 1 1933 St. Louis(N), beat Cleveland 4 to 3 1937 Pittsburgh, beat Cleveland 4 to 3 1941 Cleveland, beat Chicago (N) 4 to 3 1943 Cleveland, beat St. Louis (N)4 to 0 1946 Cleveland, beat Pittsburgh 4 to 2 CHICAGO CUBS 1907 Chicago (N), beat Washington 4 to 2 1908 Chicago (N), beat Boston (A) 4 to 2 1932 Chicago (N), beat Washington 4 to 1 1935 Chicago (N), beat Washington 4 to 3 1938 Chicago (N), beat New York Yankees 4 to 3 1941 Cleveland, beat Chicago (N) 4 to 3 1944 New York Yankees, beat Chicago (N) 4 to 3 1945 Chicago (N), beat Washington 4 to 2 THE MATCH-UP Here is a position by position comparison between the Cubs and the Indians. CATCHER Cleveland -The Indians have 32 year old Hal Wagner (.284,3,50) who was acquired from A's in July. Clyde Klutts is the backup and he hit .348 in 6 World Series games last year. Chicago - Ken O'Dea (.278,7,69) and Tony Guiliani (.295,8,32) have done an outstanding job sharing the role this season. Both have delivered some key hits down the stretch but O'Dea, with a .313 average in 27 World Series games, will likely get the nod based on experience. Edge - CHICAGO FIRST BASE Cleveland- 31 year old Mickey Rocco hit just .198 in his first year as a full-time starter. He struggled in last year's series batting just .167. Chicago - The Cubs platoon 28 year old Eddie Waitkus (.318,5,52) and veteran Rip Russell (.262,4,36) EDGE - CHICAO SECOND BASE Cleveland - 35 year old Don Gutteridge (.294,1,44) had a decent season. He has played in 13 World Series games with the Cardinals and Indians batting .238 Chicago - 35 year old Don Johnson (.288,6,46) did not dissappoint in his first opportunity as an everyday player. Johnson did hit .250 in 3 World Series games in 1944. 31 year old Eddie Stanky lost the starting job in April and hit just .165 all season. EDGE - CLEVELAND SHORTSTOP Cleveland - 30 year old Lou Boudreau (.255,7,45) saw his stats slump this season but he is still a team leader for the Indians. He hit .381 in the Series last year and has a career .317 average in 16 World Series games. Chicago - 30 year old Phil Rizzuto (.322,18,80) was acquired from the Braves in April and he responded with the best season of his 7 year career. EDGE - CHICAGO but it is close because of Boudreau's experience THIRD BASE Cleveland- 32 year old Oscar Grimes (.265,17,68) is a 4-time allstar and has a career postseason batting average of .303. Backup Ken Keltner (.287,2,11) is one of the Indians best pinch-hitters. Chicago - Harlond Clift (.244,24,93) is 35 years old but still packs plenty of power in his bat. He has something to prove in the postseason after hitting just .127 in 20 previous World Series games. EDGE - CLEVELAND because of Grimes' clutch postseason hitting. LEFTFIELD Cleveland -6 time allstar Jeff Heath (.305,20,96) had another solid year for the Indians. He is looking to attone for a terrible 2-for-23 performance in last year's World Series. Chicago - 26 year old Andy Pafko (.307,6,42) was outstanding in his first season as an everyday player. He shifts to centerfield against lefthanders and George Case (.278,1,10) takes over. EDGE - CLEVELAND CENTERFIELD CLEVELAND 39 year old Ival Goodman (.263,15,97) saw his batting average drop to it's lowest point all decade but he is still a dangerous hitter in the clutch. In 24 career postseason games he has 18 rbi's and is batting .261. 35 year old Terry Moore (.315,0,12) was signed in June after the Cardinals released him and he may play against lefthanders. CHICAGO - 28 year old Barney Olsen (.224,10,56) plays mostly against righty's with Andy Pafko shifting from leftfield against lefthanders. Joe Marty (.270,15,67) will also be worked into the lineup. The 34 year old Marty hit .208 in the 1941 World Series. EDGE - CLEVELAND RIGHTFIELD Cleveland - Taffy Wright (.263, 1.37) is 36 and starting to slow down but he still managed to play 144 games for the Tribe. Acquired from the Braves at the deadline last year, Wright hit .250 in the World Series. Jim Gleeson (.322,6,41) could also see some playing time. Chicago - Bill Nicholson (.277,17,83) is in the prime of his career at age 32. He also hit .260 in 13 career World Series games. EDGE - Chicago ROTATION Cleveland - The Indians have Bill Lohrman (17-4, 2.11), Bob Feller (15-11, 2.81) and Warren Spahn (18-15, 3.06). Lohrman is the dependable veteran with over 350 career starts. Feller is suddenly at age 28 the pitcher he should have been a decade earlier. Injuries and wildness kept him out of the majors from 1943 until this season when he suddenly found control to go with his 100 mph fastball. Spahn is a 26 year old lefthander in his second season who was stolen from the Braves for Steve Gromek in July. Chicago - Vern Olsen (23-10, 2.94), Hank Wyse (14-10, 2.75) and Ed Head (18-11, 3.69). Olsen at age 29 already has 162 career wins but is 3-4 in the postseason. Wyse is a 29 year old former 20 game winner but is 1-3 in the World Series while Head, much like Feller, worked his way back into the rotation with great results this season after a couple of years in the pen due to injury. Head is also 3-1 in 4 postseason starts with a 2.50 era. EDGE - Even BULLPEN Cleveland - Ted Wilks had 18 saves to lead the team but Allie Reynolds and Johnny Babich are just as likely to see action. Chicago - The Cubs will shift 4th starter Paul Erickson (11-20, 4.74) into the closer role, not that that's a good thing. EDGE - CLEVELAND PREDICTION: It should be a tight, low scoring affair with the talent both teams have on the mound. In the end expect a repeat of 1941 with the Indians prevailing in 7 games. COLLEGE BASKETBALL EASTERN INDEPENDANT CONFERENCE PREVIEW To say that Holy Cross, CCNY and New York University have dominated the Eastern Indpendant Conference would be a gross understatement. Between the three schools they account for all of the conference titles, 8 final four appearances and an NCAA tournament record of 90-42. The other 5 teams in the conference have a career NCAA tournament record of 2-2. Code:

They have unfinished business to address this season after flaming out in the first round of the tournament each of the past two years. An injury to Dolph *Schayes in the conference tournament ruined last season. *Schayes and fellow preseason all-conference selection Matthew Blake are back along with SG Slater *Martin. 2- HOLY CROSS: The Crusaders made their 6th trip to the Final Four last season and will once again challenge NYU for not just the conference championship but also the national title. Sophomore guard Bob *Cousy could be the best player in the nation and improvement in his and fellow sophomore Frank *Oftring should help offset the loss of two-time conference MVP Reggie Filer. 3- CCNY: Has never missed postseason play but may be hard pressed to keep that streak alive with the graduation of their two best players. The future is bright with sophomore center Waymon Lantieri and recruits Al *McGuire (who's brother Dick plays for Indiana) and 7'0" Charlie *Share. 4- VILLANOVA: The Wildcats are stuck in no man's land...too good for the bottom half of the conference but not strong enough to challenge the big three. This years team has plenty of experience led by junior PF Earl *Dodd. Reynaldo Brownlee, a PG from Proctor, Vermont was a big signing and should see plenty of action as a freshman. 5- MANHATTAN: Have not won more than 6 games in conference since 1937 but that could change this season with 4 returning starters. The Jaspers will not compete with the big 3 but could challenge Villanova for 4th. 6- NAVY: Coming off of a school worst 5-23 season the Midshipmen have 4 starters returning including 4-year starter Teagan Fabian at guard. Freshman Richard xSanders may get eased into the rotation. 7- ARMY: Just 9 wins a season ago for the Black Knights who will rely on junior forward Andrew Greene to carry the offense. Greene averaged 12.4 ppg a year ago and is one of 4 returning starters. 8- DUQUESNE: The Dukes tied a school record with 18 victories last year but graduated four of their 5 starters. Wright, a 35 year old from San Bernardino, took the fight to Saddler early and scored a knockout but Saddler quickly recovered and knocked Wright down twice in the 11th round. As the winner of the fight Saddler is tenatively slated to fight Pep for his title on December 5th, assuming Pep successfully defends it against Henry Armstrong on Halloween. Saddler has a career record of 26-2 with both of his losses coming against the undefeated Pep. In New York, 19 year old heavyweight JT xCampbell won an unanimous decision over Lee Oma. For xCampbell it was the toughest opponent of his young career and he fought a terrific fight, taking the action to Oma and scoring the only knockdown of the 8 round bout. xCampbell improves to 4-0-1 as a pro. Oma, a 31 year old from Chicago, falls to 13-11-1.

TIGERFAN'S SPORTING DAILY : THURSDAY OCTOBER 2, 1947
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL CUBS WIN SERIES OPENER 9-4 After spotting the Cleveland Indians an early 4-0 lead the Chicago Cubs roared back to take the opening game of the World Series by a 9-4 score. Catcher Ken O'Dea paced the Cubs offense with 3 rbi's including a pair on a 2-out double in the 7th inning that put the game away. Cleveland played without their most dangerous hitter as Jeff Heath was unable to start due to a nagging knee injury. Heath did enter the game as a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the ninth but grounded out weakly to Cubs pitcher Vern Olsen. Cubs leadoff man Phil Rizzuto started the game with a double but Indians hurler Bill Lohrman retired the next three hitters without incident. The Indians struck first when Terry Moore led off the bottom of the second with a double off of Olsen. Hal Wagner singled in Moore and crossed the plate himself when Indians pitcher Bill Lohrman ripped a 2-out triple down the rightfield line. Cleveland would score 2 more runs in the third after three straight singles from Taffy Wright, Oscar Grimes and Lou Boudreau combined with an Andy Pafko throwing error. Lorhman was cruising along working on a 2-hitter until the wheels fell off in the 6th. With one out Eddie Waitkus delivered a bloop single and scored on a Bill Nicholson triple. Before the inning was over the Cubs had 3 more singles and a walk and scored 4 runs to tie the game. Rather than go to the pen the Indians decided to stick with Lohrman in the 7th and again he was roughed up. Rizzuto led off with a single and moved to second on Waitkus' sacrifice. After an intentional walk to Nicholson, Harlond Clift hit a slow roller to Lou Boudreau. The Indians shortstop flipped the ball quickly to second sacker Don Gutteridge but the relay to first was not in time to double up Clift. It would prove costly as Andy Pafko followed with a single to score George Case, who was running for Rizzuto. O'Dea delivered his 2 run double and he scored on an rbi single from Barney Olsen to make it 8-4 Cubs. The Indians finally went to the bullpen and reliever Ed Klieman was able to get Don Johnson to ground out to end the inning. After a rough start Cubs starter Vern Olsen settled down nicely. Cleveland threatened with a pair of base runners on walks in the seventh inning but Olsen got out of the jam unscathed. He then retired the last 6 Cleveland batters in order to finish the game. O'Dea would complete the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth to make it 9-4 Chicago. Code:

Indiana State has made the NCAA tournament 9 of the past 10 years. 2- WRIGHT STATE: The Raiders are loaded this season with all 5 starters returning. Last year was a dissappointment as injuries limited them to a 9 win season but with an extra year experience for all the key players this could be the season they make their first postseason appearance in school history. 3- DEPAUL: Recent history hasn't been kind to the Blue Demons, who have gone three straight seasons with less than 10 wins. With three returning starters and a promising freshman in center Raulio Haaker things are looking up this year. 4- ILLINOIS-CHICAGO: UIC is coming off back to back 20 win seasons but lost 4 starters from last year's squad. The good news is junior center Will Lillipop is back. He average 11.6 ppg and 9.1 rpg a year ago. 5- WISC-GREEN BAY: With their last postseason appearance now 13 years ago and the Phoenix coming off a dismal 7 win season last year there is not a lot to get excited about. There is some talent here particularily senior centre Russ Vance and junior guard Marus Bonina. 6- CLEVELAND STATE: Since winning 20 games and going to the NIT in 1942, Cleveland State has never won more than 8 games in a season and finished with a school worst 7-22 record last year. Guard Shannon Mumaw averaged over 13 ppg a year ago and made the preseason all-conference team. 7- YOUNGSTOWN STATE: A 17 win season a year ago is a nice change from the single digit win totals in 5 of the previous 6 seasons. 8- BUTLER: The Bulldogs lost most of their experienced players to graduation but there are some good freshman on the roster including PF Ty Spencer and center Robert Merwin. TIGERFAN'S SPORTING DAILY : FRIDAY OCTOBER 3, 1947
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL ANOTHER CUBS COMEBACK VICTORY IN SERIES The Chicago Cubs return to the Windy City for Saurday's Game 3 of the World Series in complete control following a 6-5 victory over the Indians in Cleveland. The win, combined with Wednesday's 9-3 victory in the opener, gives the Cubs a commanding 2 games to none lead in the series with the next 3 games slated for the friendly confines of Chicago's Wrigley Field. Just like in game one the Indians struck first. Lou Boudreau led off the bottom of the second inning with a single off of Cubs starter Hank Wyse. Boudreau then stole second and scored on an rbi single from Ival Goodman. A catcher's interference call and a pair of throwing errors by Cubs second sacker Don Johnson allowed Cleveland to plate two more runs in the frame despite getting just the two hits. In the top of the third the Cubs answered and quickly tied the game. Cleveland starter Bob Feller, who had many problems with wildness both on and off the mound in his younger days, got into trouble when he gave up a leadoff single to Eddie Waitkus and then walked the next 3 batters to force in a run. A throwing error by third baseman Oscar Grimes and a Feller wild pitch plated two more to tie the game at 3. With the Tribe bullpen furiously warming up Feller just as suddenly settled down and fanned Don Johnson and Hank Wyse to end the inning. Cleveland had a chance to retake the lead in the bottom of the third but with runners on the corners and one out Wyse made a terrific play to spear a one hopper from Ival Goodman that looked like a sure single up the middle. Wyse turned it into an inning ending double play. The Indians did regain the lead in the fourth inning when Mickey Rocco led off with a triple and scored on a double off the bat of Feller. In addition to his heroics at the plate, Feller settled down nicely on the mound after his misadventures in the third inning, retiring 11 straight before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the 6th. Cleveland squandered a big opportunity to add to it's 4-3 lead in the fifth inning when they had 3 straight singles but failed to score a run as Oscar Grimes was gunned down attempting to steal second base after the first hit. Ed Klieman relieved Feller in the 7th and had little trouble that inning but in the 8th doubles from Ken O'Dea and pinch-hitter Tony Giuliani tied the game at 4. In the bottom of the 8th the Indians got a 2-out double from Jim Gleeson but failed to capitalize and it would prove costly when Phil Rizzuto worked Klieman for a walk to start the ninth. Ted Wilks took over on the mound for Cleveland and he induced a shallow pop out from Eddie Waitkus for out number one. Bill Nicholson followed with a bloop single to move Rizzuto to second. After Harlond Clift lifted a lazy infield fly for out number two Andy Pafko ripped a double down the leftfield line to score both Rizzuto and Nicholson giving the Cubs their first lead of the game, 6-4. In the bottom of the ninth the Indians got a leadoff double from pinch-hitter Ken Keltner off Chicago reliever Walt Lanfranconi and followed that up with a walk to Jeff Heath and an infield single from Oscar Grimes to load the bases with none out. Cleveland was back in business, or so it seemed. Lou Boudreau grounded into a fielder's choice scoring Keltner and putting runners on first and second with one away and the Tribe down just one run. Ival Goodman stepped to the plate but his sharp grounder was speared by Cubs second baseman Don Johnson. Johnson flipped the ball to Rizzuto for the out at second but the relay to first was not in time. The tying run was ninety feet away with Mickey Rocco at the plate and 2 out. Rocco, who tripled and scored in the 4th inning, could not deliver this time and the game ended 6-5 Chicago on his pop up to shallow rightfield. Code:

BOXING ZALE RETAINS WORLD MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE Tony Zale left no doubt as to who was the winner of his rematch with George Abrams for the World Middleweight Title. Zale knocked out the challenger in the tenth round of their scheduled 15 round bout at The Chicago Stadium. The champ, fighting before his hometown fans launched a furious attack to start the 10th after being pretty much in control through the first nine rounds. After he caught Abrams near the throat that appeared to wind the challenger, Zale went in for the kill and finished off the bout with a devastating combination to the body of Abrams. In July, Zale won a controversial decision over Abrams wh with 46 seconds left in the 15th and final round the referee stopped the fight giving Zale a TKO win to successfully defend his title. Zale was all over Abrams in the round and while it was clear the challenger was virtually defenseless at the time of the stoppage his corner was incensed because Abrams was clearly winning the fight and needed just to survive the round to claim the title. COLLEGE BASKETBALL IVY LEAGUE PREVIEW Princeton, Yale and Harvard were national powers in the early years of the Ivy League but in the 1940's they have slipped back and the conference has outstanding parity. In the 1930's it was not surprising to see at least one Ivy League school make the elite eight, in fact in 1936 both Yale and Princeton made the final four, but since 1940 it is very rare to see an Ivy League school advance past the second round of the tournament. That being said, the Ivy League is top to bottom one of the most competitively balanced conferences in the nation. Code:

IVY LEAGUE PREDICTED ORDER OF FINISH 1- PRINCETON: The Tigers have only missed postseason play once in the last 15 years but have not made any noise in the NCAA tournament since reaching the elite eight in 1943. They were 11-3 in conference last year but were upset in the first round of the Ivy League tournament. Forwards Tony *Lavelli and Ernie *Vandeweghe are the key players on a young Tiger team. 2- BROWN: This could be a huge year for the Bears who have four returning starters including preseason all-conference selections Duane *Klueh and Mark Hughes. Hughes averaged over 15 ppg as a junior and could be an NBA draft candidate. Brown was 10-4 in conference last season and made the NIT quarterfinals. 3- HARVARD: The Crimson have made 4 straight trips to the NCAA's and are coming off a strong 11-3 showing in the Ivy League last season. The loss of first round pick Donnie *Forman to Chicago of the NBA will hurt but sophomores Mason Tienda and Valmy Payne are ready to pick up the slack. Tienda, a preseason all-conference selection at center, averaged 11.5 ppg and 7.1 rpg as a freshman. 4- COLUMBIA: Only postseason bid ever was in 1944 when the Lions the Ivy League tournament for the first time before making a quick exit in the NCAA's. Columbia has not won more than 14 games in a season since 1936. Senior Walter *Budko is one of three returning starters. 5- DARTMOUTH: Surprised everyone a year ago by winning their first ever Ivy League tournament despite an 11-22 regular season. Senior Guard Zach Moloney averaged over 15 ppg a year ago but was overlooked for the preseason all-conference team. He is one of 4 returning starters. 6- PENN: Missed postseason play for the first time in four years after a dissappointing 13-19 season. The previous three years Penn had won at least 22 games including a school record 27 win season and a trip to the Sweet 16 two years ago. Just two returning starters and both are sophomores. 7- CORNELL: Cornell made it's only postseason appearance in 1941 and has not had a conference record above .500 ever since. Sophomore guard Gabe Strickland averaged 10.4 ppg as a freshman and could challenge for the conference scoring lead this year. 8- YALE: The 1940's have not been kind to Yale. After 6 straight NCAA tourney appearances including a trip to the final four in the thirties, Yale has not been to the dance since 1942 and is coming off back to back 8 win seasons. IVY LEAGUE PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM G Duane *Klueh Brown G Walter *Budko Columbia F Mark Hughes Brown F Tony *Lavelli Princeton C Mason Tienda Harvard NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE *GRAHAM TO START VS BROWNS The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have confirmed that second overall draft pick Otto *Graham will make his first NFL start on Sunday when the Bucs host the Cleveland Browns. *Graham made his pro debut by taking a half dozen snaps in the closing minutes of Tampa's 28-19 win over Dallas last Sunday after Bucs starting QB Paul *Christman was forced out of the game with an ankle injury. *Christman tested the ankle during the week but the coaching staff felt it was best to hold him out of at least one game to give him time to heal particularily with a big showdown against Atlanta next week. Chicago Bears (3-2) at Denver Broncos (2-2) +1 Detroit Lions (2-3) at Kansas City Chiefs (3-1) -8 Oakland Raiders (3-1) at Green Bay Packers (4-1) -8 Tennessee Titans (4-1) at Houston Texans (4-1) E New England Patriots (2-3) at St. Louis Rams (2-3) -3 New York Jets (3-2) at Seattle Seahawks (3-2) E San Francisco 49ers (4-1) at Buffalo Bills (0-5) +3 Cleveland Browns (3-1) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-2) -2 Pittsburgh Steelers (2-2) at New Orleans Saints (3-2) -5 San Diego Chargers (1-3) at Minnesota Vikings (2-3) -5 Atlanta Falcons (4-1) at Cincinnati Bengals (2-2) +3 Carolina Panthers (1-4) at Baltimore Ravens (3-1) -8 Jacksonville Jaguars (2-3) at Indianapolis Colts (2-3) -2 MONDAY NIGHT Arizona Cardinals (1-4) at Miami Dolphins (0-5) -8 WEEK 6 PREDICTIONS Finally got a win last week so I am 1-8 on the season. But maybe that first victory changes my luck. This time my best bets are the Packers over Oakland. 8 points is a lot to give up but the Packers are number one in the power ratings and on a 2 game winning streak. My second pick will be the Lions to cover in Kansas City. Detroit has underachieved this season but I just have a hunch they can cover the 8 point spread. I expect the Chiefs to win but Detroit keeps it close. Finally on Monday I will take Miami and the 8 points at home to 1-4 Arizona. Both teams are awful but I think with homefield advantage and 8 points to play with the Dolphins can at the very least cover the spread. COLLEGE FOOTBALL TEXAS VS NORTH CAROLINA HIGHLIGHTS COLLEGE FOOTBALL WEEKEND A busy weekend in college football with every team in the top twenty seeing action over the next two days. Certainly the marquee game has to be 3rd Texas visiting number 4 North Carolina on Saturday. Other games have number one ranked Notre Dame travelling to Pittsburgh to play the Pitt Panthers in their season opener while second ranked Michigan entertains Stanford. There is one other matchup that has top 20 teams squaring off against each other. It takes place at the Rose Bowl where the 7th ranked Southern California Trojans are home to 10th ranked Rice. All 4 Western League teams are in action as the 4-3 Winnipeg Blue Bombers travel to Regina to face the 2-5 Roughriders. The two clubs meet in Winnipeg last Saturday with the Bombers prevailing 16-15. Another installment in the battle of Alberta takes place in Edmonton tomorrow. In Calgary last week, the hometown Stampeders pulled out a 25-23 overtime victory over the Eskimoes. It was Edmonton's first loss this season. The lone Interprovincial League game has the Toronto Argonauts travelling to Ottawa to face the Rough Riders. There are two games in the Ontario Rugby Football League including first place Hamilton visiting the Ottawa Trojans. The other contest is an all Toronto affair as the Balmy Beach club hosts the Indians.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL HOLY CROSS TOPS PRESEASON COLLEGE HOOPS RANKINGS Led by their outstanding sophomore guards Bob *Cousy and Frank *Oftring, the Holy Cross Crusaders will start the season as college basketball's number one ranked team according to the Associated Press poll. Oregon, Oklahoma A&M, Boston College and New York University round out the preseason top 5. The other major poll, decided on primarily by the college coaches as opposed to the media, will not be released until November 3rd, 3 days before the preseason tournaments begin. Code:

CUBS LOOK TO WRAP UP SERIES AT HOME After comeback victories in both game one and game two of the World Series the Chicago Cubs are looking to finish the Cleveland Indians off at Wrigley Field rather than head back to Cleveland for a possible 6th and 7th game. Everything went Chicago's way during game two despite a pair of second inning errors from Cubs second baseman Don Johnson that let Cleveland build a 3-0 lead. A brief spell of wildness from Tribe starter Bob Feller, who was outstanding except for that one inning, allowed the Cubs to tie the game. Then Cleveland, which outhit the Cubs 12-8 in the game, squandered several great scoring opportunities. For today's 3rd game the Indians send lefthander Warren Spahn to the mound against Ed Head of Chicago. Spahn, a midseason pickup from the Braves, was 18-15 on the season. He faced the Cubs three times while with the Braves this season, going 2-0 with a 2.59 era. The 26 year old is in his second pro season and will be making his World Series debut. Head was 18-11 on the season with a 3.69 era. He has made 4 World Series starts with Cubs in 1942 and 1944, going 3-1 with a 2.50 era. BOXING MARCIANO IMPROVES TO 4-0 Rising heavyweight contender Rocky Marciano improved his professional record to 4-0 with a unanimous decision over New York pugilist Joe Baksi at Madison Square Garden last night. Only an incredible display of heart from Baksi during the final two rounds kept Marciano from his 4th consecutive knock out victory. Marciano sent Baksi to the canvas twice in the 7th and once in the 8th and final round but Baksi beat the count on each occassion. On the same card Pittsburgh native Billy Conn scored an unanimous decision over Jimmy Bivins. Conn, at 29-1-2, appears poised for a shot at World Lightheavyweight Champion Archie Moore. Bivins, who hails from Cleveland, is 29-4 and remains one of the top 10 Lightheavyweights in the world. In London, England European Lightheavyweight champ Freddie Mills battled to a 15 round majority draw with Belgium challenger Gustave Roth. They will fight a rematch in November.
