Coach Santos is making a stand. He looks good if Portugal beats Morocco. He looks terrible if they lose. Either way, though, he deserves respect.

He was also subbed into the 6-1 clubbing of Switzerland, but pretty late and without doing anything great.

Actually, I am surprised that he accepted coming in as a late sub, especially this second time. IIRC from reading a recent article, he has been known to refuse in that situation.

Hard to believe: "MOROCCO SEEKING TO BE FIRST AFRICAN NATION TO REACH WORLD CUP SEMI-FINALS" just now on screen.

It will be ironic if Ronaldo had the last of those chances, and was denied.
EDIT: Well, it wasn't the final chance. A cross kick sailed over his head, though, and Pepe perhaps surprised, misdirected it. That was it. EDIT 2: And it's over. Morocco in the semi-finals!

Croatia is there for the third time (1998, 2018).... which is impressive given that the country didn't exist until 1992-ish (it's complicated) and couldn't attempt to even qualify for the 1994 World Cup either.
Besides that, they have only group stage exits and a DNQ, though.

I think if England can upset France, Morocco has a shot at upsetting England. I just think the gap is too wide for Morocco to beat France.
Back in 1990 Cameroon almost did it. I think they were a better team, even though they didn't make it to the Semi's. Last edited by Ragnar; 12-10-2022 at 12:14 PM. |

Three semis (and one final) in seven Cups is pretty darn impressive for anyone, IMO, never mind a country with barely half the population of London or NYC.
RIP Westheim's rant about Africa. So, I've now called three of the four quarterfinals incorrectly. Pre-emptive apologies to France, I suppose. (Perhaps the Three Lions triumph because Southgate decides to let James Maddison on the pitch? [/Leicester City fan] Hugely unlikely, though; he'd be more likely to play James Madison, author of the Constitution and 4th President of the U.S. And not only has Madison been dead since 1836, but he was only 5'4" [1.63m], so he wouldn't be much use on the set-pieces, I'm thinking.) ************************************************** Cristiano crying as he walks up the tunnel to the bus. Pepe, interviewed on the pitch, makes no reference at all to his missing the possibly-tying header, instead saying that Portugal had control "100% of the match" and it was all because the referee "wouldn't let us play" in the 2nd half, always blowing the whistle. The bit where the ref sent off Chaddiri with a very dubious second yellow in extra time is not mentioned, either. (To be fair to the ref, it was a beautiful bit of dramatic acting by Joao Felix; perhaps the ref appreciates artistry?) Pepe continues griping that the referee is an Argentine and apparently Messi said yesterday that he was pulling for Morocco or something, so that was unfair. Never mind that Argentina is in the other half of the draw. And this guy is the captain! Classy, classy. Makes Cristiano look mature. (I adore certain of the Portuguese side: Bruno Fernandes, Ruben Dias for two. But this sort of crap makes it very hard for me to be sad…even if they might have proven more competitive in the semis, if Morocco's glass slipper shatters, as they sometimes do.) I like Argentina (although I don't care for Messi). I am good with Croatia. Morocco at least makes for an underdog story (of which the World Cup has but few really good ones).
If only Jude could ball out France now, then I could be at peace. I mean, England isn't gonna win. Sooner or later, it will go to a penalty shootout for them......

Small historic note; Morrocco has now beaten 2 of its 3 European colonizers.
The third? France (and the most recent)

I'm not rooting for England for England's sake. I'm rooting for Westheim who has had a string of bad rooting recently.

But... On these first few plays, the Thin Red Line has not filled me with confidence. More a sense of foreboding.
