Monday, May 13, 1957 ANDERSON, MERAUX VICTORS, STILL TIED FOR 1ST IN SI SUPREME LEAGUE The top two clubs in the South Island Secondary League posted victories this past Sunday, but they both had tough times... Anderson just barely squeezed by the Billings Rams 4-3 in 12 innings and Meraux was pushed hard by last place Braxton with the Tigers finally prevailing 7-3 in a last-ditch rally... the third place Littleville Supermen kept pace with the league leaders by shellacking the Delacroix Cubs 9-3... in other results around the league New Yerby trimmed the Parkland Perfectos 5-2... Grin Hill bombarded the Cherrywood Stouts 17-12 in a high-scoring shootout... and Columbia defeated the Gull Lake Sailors in tight duel 4-2. Last edited by Eugene Church; 01-30-2022 at 04:27 PM. |

In my IPA I have lots of former hockey players. I’ve put in some real-life baseball players and characters from tv shows and movies too

MY LIFE IN 1957
EC's Lookin' for Heaven in '57 EC is 17 now... I'm in the 11th grade at Murphy High School in Mobile, Alabama... as you know I work weekends at the Ranch Restaurant... work in the kitchen as a food preparer (also had to sweep, mop and clean the kitchen and take out the huge garbage cans)... I prepared the food for the cooks to cook... this means I never got to go to football games on Friday nights... however, I did get to go to all of the basketball games... yep, life is good for EC... really love my basketball... it was my Heaven in '57. Last year the Murphy High Golden Panthers won it all in Alabama with a 26-3 record - the state high school basketball championship - but the state MVP Ron Cochran, Larry Howell, Jimmy Thompson and Company have graduated... we got a new team this year with a new coach George Hill... he played college ball at Auburn University... coach Herman Maisel resigned after winning the state title, saying he couldn't take care of his family on a teacher's pay... good decision for him... he went on to be a very, very successful realtor in Mobile... coach Maisel was involved in creating over 100 shopping centers around the country. The 1957 edition of the Golden Panthers was led by two twin brothers, who were on the '56 champs, but they played very little - Henny and Lenny Bolton - they were pretty good guards as seniors... they topped the team in scoring... the team was small... no talent at center or forward... Murphy had a decent season winding up about 15-10... they were quickly eliminated in the playoffs... beat Baker 77-38, but was trounced by the Theodore Bobcats 76-50... 'nuff said, season over... I'm just guessing at the record, I couldn't find it anywhere in the state high school archives... it said the season record was missing... my best buddy Richard Yelverton was a manager for the basketball team... I really thought it was great for him to get athletic socks and Converse All-Star shoes absolutely free of charge for being a manager... not too bright of me... shoes and a few pair of socks couldn't have been much more than $20... but let me tell ya, pilgrim... EC really considered them something very special... EC even considered being a manager just to get those beautiful socks and shoes... having Converse All-Stars on the old hardcourt was like Heaven... so for a little while EC would be in Heaven wearing his Converse All-Stars and athletic socks, too... my Mama bought me some athletic socks and some beautiful Converse All-Stars... yep, EC's life is Heaven in '57... at least during basketball season. Here's great article about the Murphy High Panthers that won the Alabama High School title in 1956... it is a story about the coach Herman Maisel, written by his son, Ivan, who became a pretty well-know sportswriter.. https://vault.si.com/vault/2000/04/0...ame-his-father Last edited by Eugene Church; 02-03-2022 at 05:16 PM. |

MY LIFE IN 1957
EC's Lookin' For Heaven in '57 Yep, EC's just havin' fun, hon. Yep, I guarantee I will find a little bit of heaven today, right cheer... right now. What's the difference between an accordion and a trampoline? You take your shoes off before you jump up and down on a trampoline. Lassez les bons temps rouler Let the good times roll! AHHH-EEEE! (Cajun Yell) Here comes that pretty little jolie blon (pretty lady) Mary Chapin Carpenter singin' on a Louisiana Saturday night on the da bayou at the Twist and Shout. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuapCENFM2U Last edited by Eugene Church; 02-05-2022 at 06:33 PM. |

Monday, May 20, 1957 MERAUX TAKES TOP SPOT IN SI SECONDARY LEAGUE, ANDERSON FALLS A GAME BEHIND The Meraux Tigers are now the undisputed leader in the South Island Secondary League... they defeated the 3rd place Littleville Supermen 5-1 Sunday and then got a lot of help from the 5th place Columbia Black Cats, who upset the Anderson Ravens 8-3 in 10 innings... Meraux is one game up on Anderson in the pennant race... the Supermen are 2 games off the pace in a 3rd-place tie with New Yerby... the Yankees squeezed by Grin Hill 3-2... 4 clubs are deadlocked for the 5th spot in the standings with 4-4 marks... Gull Lake shut out the Parkland Perfectos 7-0 and are tied with Billings, Grin Hill and Columbia... Braxton knocked off Billings 3-1 and Cherrywood rapped the Delacroix Cubs 9-3 in other games... the Perfectos, Bruins and Stouts are all in the league basement, South Island Secondary League Stars of the Week |
