06/16/1982 - Thompson Helps Pirates Beat Mets

The Pittsburgh Pirates downed the New York Mets, 8-2, at Three Rivers Stadium. Jason D Thompson led the way, going 4-for-5 for Pittsburgh. With the victory, the Pirates record now stands at 26-33.

John Candelaria's at-bat in the bottom of the sixth inning was a big one for Pittsburgh. Coming to bat with two out, the bases loaded and Pittsburgh leading 2-1, the pitcher drew a walk, driving in 1 run.

Candelaria called the win the result of "everyone being in sync."

06/18/1982 - Cardinals Solve Mets, 6-3

St. Louis starter Joaquin Andujar had a strong outing against the New York Mets at Busch Stadium II. The right-hander was a big part of his team's 6-3 win. The 4th-place Cardinals lifted their record to 32-31.

Ozzie Smith aided the St. Louis cause with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the fourth. For the game, the shortstop was 3 for 4 with 3 singles.

"I'm just happy to help the team win," Smith told the St. Louis Daily News.

06/21/1982 - Puleo Finishes Off Expos

The New York Mets picked up a win at Shea Stadium, knocking off the Montreal Expos, 7-1. Starting pitcher Charlie Puleo, who captured player of the game honors, was a big reason why. New York improves to 40-29 with the win. They lead their division by 3½ games.

Puleo, who dominated for New York, earned the victory to move to 9-1. He was in control the whole game, scattering 4 hits over 9 innings, while striking out 6. Montreal batters could never bunch up enough hits to produce a rally.

The New York Mets got a strong performance from pitcher Mike Scott, who stymied the Montreal offense en route to a 4-1 win at Shea Stadium. In 8.2 innings, Scott surrendered 7 hits, while striking out 4 and walking 1. He allowed 1 run. New York is now 41-30, 3½ games up in the NL East Division.

Joel Youngblood chipped in for New York with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the third. For the game, the second baseman had 3 hits in 4 at-bats with 1 home run, 2 singles, 1 run scored, and 3 runs batted in.

New York Mets starter Ed Lynch was in a groove as he led his team to a win over the Philadelphia Phillies, 2-0. Jesse Orosco was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 1 of 4 save opportunities. New York has 5 straight wins, Philadelphia 3 straight losses.

Dave Kingman, who is a five-time All-Star, chipped in for New York with a solo home run in the top of the first. For the game, the first baseman had 2 hits in 4 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 1 run batted in.

"It's a mindset," said Lynch. "Just trying to do your job, trying to be consistent."

07/02/1982 - Phillies Get Close Win Over Mets

The Phillies faced a stiff challenge from New York pitcher Mike Scott, but persevered to claim a win at Shea Stadium. The final score was 4-3. Scott went 7.1 innings and allowed no earned runs. Warren Brusstar notched his 5th save in 5 chances. The Phillies bumped their record to 40-39 with this latest triumph.

This game was not decided until late. With two out in the top of the ninth, Pete Rose Sr drew a walk, driving in 1 run. The Phillies took the lead, 4-3.

Riding the 2-hit performance of the five-time All-Star Rusty Staub, the New York Mets stopped the Los Angeles Dodgers, 12-2. The Mets bumped their record to 49-35 with this latest triumph.

Staub had a key at-bat for New York early in the game. With the bases loaded, he hit a bases-clearing double. It was his 3rd double of the season and gave New York an early 3-0 lead.

"We put it together today and came out with the win," Staub said in postgame remarks. "That's the main thing."

07/07/1982 - Mets Win 7-4 on Kingman Walk-Off Homer

San Francisco got a terrific performance from pitcher Jim Barr, but it wasn't enough to beat the New York Mets. New York won the Shea Stadium contest, 7-4. Barr was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He threw 8 innings allowing 1 run. The Mets bumped their record to 50-35 with this latest triumph.

Dave Kingman was the walk-off hero for New York. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Mets first baseman hit a dramatic 3-run home run to send the teams home.

"I'm glad I could get it done when the game was in the balance," Kingman said in his postgame press conference.

07/08/1982 - Mets Come Back Late to Top Giants

Dave Kingman made an impact in the 4-2 New York win over San Francisco. Kingman, who is on pace to hit 45 home runs this season, was 2 for 4 with a home run and a triple, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2. New York reliever Jesse Orosco was credited with the win, to go to 4-3. Atlee Hammaker took the loss for San Francisco. New York has now won 3 in a row.

Kingman had a game-changing triple in the bottom of the eighth. On a first pitch fastball from Atlee Hammaker, he banged a run-scoring triple to right-center, giving the Mets a 3-2 lead. It was the 1st triple of the year for Kingman.

San Francisco manager said he was "mildly disappointed" with the loss. "We had our opportunities, but we didn't take advantage of them," he said

Despite leading the NL in Homers and being 2nd in RBI's, Kong was left of the All Star Team in favor of Steve Garvey and Len Matusek at the 1B position.

07/16/1982 - Dodgers Come Back Late to Clip Mets

The Los Angeles Dodgers bested the New York Mets by a score of 7-6, with third baseman Ron Cey getting the main credit. On the day, Cey went 4-5 with 4 singles. He drove in 3 runs and scored once for the Dodgers. Los Angeles reliever Steve Howe was credited with the win, to go to 3-0. Neil Allen took the loss for New York. The Dodgers bumped their record to 49-41 with this latest triumph.

Los Angeles's win came gift-wrapped. With two out in the bottom of the ninth, with the game tied, Steve Sax reached on an error by the 3B, driving in 1 run.

The New York Mets tripped up the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-3 today. The Mets were led by Dave Kingman, their 33-year-old first baseman. Kingman made life miserable for Los Angeles pitchers all day, tagging them for 5 hits in 5 at-bats. Dave Kingman singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit a three-run home run off Vicente Romo in the 4th, singled in the 7th and singled in the 9th.

For the year Kingman is hitting .268 with 27 home runs. His stats include 74 runs batted in and 58 runs scored.

San Francisco Giants starter Bill Laskey was in fine form against the New York Mets at Candlestick Park, leading his team to a 4-3 win. The Giants, now 42-52, have won 4 in a row.

The Giants got a big at-bat from first baseman Reggie Smith. For the game, Smith went 2 for 5 with a double. In the bottom of the tenth, with a runner on 2nd, he stroked a run-scoring double. His 21st double of the season gave San Francisco a 4-3 lead.

New York starter Ed Lynch pitched effectively against the San Diego Padres at Jack Murphy Stadium. The right-hander led his team to a 4-3 win. In 8 innings, Lynch surrendered 5 hits, while striking out 3 and walking 0. He allowed 3 runs. The save was Neil Allen's, his 18th.

Ellis Valentine, who is tied for 9th in the NL with a .314 batting average, aided the New York cause with a run-scoring single in the top of the sixth. For the game, the right fielder was 1-4.

"We'll savor this win," Valentine told the New York Gazette, "then get ready for the next game."

New York leads the NL East Division by 2 games.

Dave Parker, who is tied for 2nd in the NL in total bases with 203, aided the Pittsburgh cause with a 2-run double in the top of the fifth. For the game, the right fielder went 1 for 5 with a double, while adding 2 RBI.

Chicago rode a good effort from starter Ken Kravec to beat the New York Mets at Wrigley Field. The final score was 2-1. Kravec picked up the win for Chicago, going 7 innings. He gave up 1 run on 4 hits. He now sports a record of 9-8. The Cubs raised their record to 44-64.

Had Keith Moreland not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 3rd, Moreland hit a 2-run double. That made the score 2-1, in favor of the Cubs.

Afterward, Cubs manager was ebullient. "That was a fun game to coach," he told a group of reporters, adding, "I hope it was just as fun to watch."

The St. Louis Cardinals bested the New York Mets by a score of 6-2, with catcher Darrell Porter getting the main credit. On the day, Porter was 3-4 with a home run and 2 singles, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 4 for the Cardinals. Bob Forsch was the winner. Over 8 innings, he allowed 2 runs on 9 hits, with no walks and 3 strikeouts. The Cardinals go to 53-60, putting them 4th in the NL East Division.

Porter had a key at-bat for St. Louis early in the game. With runners on 1st and 3rd, he hit a 3-run home run. It was his 10th home run of the season and gave St. Louis an early 3-0 lead.

"We were able to get some things going offensively," said Porter.

The Mets got a big at-bat from catcher John Stearns. For the game, Stearns went 3 for 4 with 3 singles, while scoring 2 times. In the bottom of the sixth, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a run-scoring single. His 90th hit of the season gave New York a 4-3 lead.

"If we play like this, we can win a lot of games," Zachry told the New York Gazette.
