We offered $1.2 mil. 1B Antonio Mata will make $15,812,500. We offered $12.6 mil. That one hurts....

How do you NOT win manager of the year!!!!
Other than that, great great season. Like you though, I worry about a regression. Not much mind you, I think you'll be there all year. Can't wait!

Starting pitching is going to be our achilles heel, I think....

Trades!

First, we sent a bevy of middling prospects to Houston to get 1 middling prospect. We sent them C Bobby Reyes (21 R), 3B Al Haynes (26 R), 3B Gary Trevino (21 R) and 2B/OF Jim Buchanan (25 R) and they sent us P Bill Tull (24 R). Gary Trevino is the one I hate to part with as I think he is going to be a very good lead-off man in the future, but we are well stocked with 3B prospects, so his loss should not be hard to overcome. Tull was a 14th round draft pick in 1997, so the Astros have certainly made a profit on that pick. He is nothing to get excited about, unless you like flute with your rock and roll, as I do....

Next we sent P Mike Meyer (25 R), C Paul Stewart (28 R) and 1B Danny Hernandez (23 L) to Arizona for P Darrell Massingham (27 R), P Jim Nilson (25 R), P Chris Procell (33 L) and RF Luis Rosario (27 R). Massingham is the player we wanted and the other three are just toss-ins. Nilson is a reliever who might be worth something someday and Procell and Rosario will be sent to AAA as injury insurance. Massingham was the 8th overall pick in the 1996 draft and has been a bit slow coming around and will not be the star he was predicted to be, but he looks to be a solid pitcher.

P Nick Miller (30 R), who the Portland Beavers made an offer to and got laughed at, has signed with the New York Yankees for 6 years and $114.4 mil ($19.07 mil. average per season). He was 15-11 with a 2.75 ERA this past season with Minnesota and was even better in 2001.

P Jose Rico (32 L) has also signed with the New York Yankees. 4 years for $73.2 mil. ($18.3 mil. average per season). He was 13-6 with a 2.73 ERA this past season with Washington.

P Mark Gray (30 R) has also signed with the New York Yankees. 3 years for $40.8 mil. ($13.6 per season). He was 6-7 with a 2.60 ERA and 50 SV for the World Champion Kansas City Royals this past season and has 99 SV over the past two years.

What a day for the Yankees! Money maybe cannot buy happiness, but it can sure buy a pitching staff....

Their pitchers will earn more in 2003 than our whole team....

P Hank Wikel (37 R) signed with the New York Yankees. 2 years for $34.4 mil. ($17.2 mil. per season). The 2nd year is contingent on him pitching 180 innings in 2003. He was 11-10 with a 3.18 ERA for Detroit this past season.

On Thursday the Yankees signed P Robby Hermosillo (28 L) to a 3-yr./$31.8 Mil. contract. He was 7-9 with a 3.03 ERA and 44 SV for Montreal this past season.

The Yankees now have 134 SV from 2002 in their 2003 Bullpen....

3B Alex Reyes (32 R) re-signed with the Kansas City Royals for 2-yrs./$40.4 mil. ($20.2 mil per season). He hit .274-23-101 (.787 OPS) for them last year and hit .290-25-107 (.839 OPS) in 2001.

SS Ty Bridges (30 R) signed with the Boston Red Sox for 7-yrs./$84 mil. ($12 mil. average per season). The final year is contingent 550 PA in 2008. He hit .303-2-45 (.752 OPS) with 44 SB for the World Champion Kansas City Royals this past season and hit .339-2-77 (.830 OPS) with 64 SB in 2001.

Winter Meetings Begin

3B Larry Menard (35 R) signed with the Seattle Mariners for 2-yrs/$29.2 mil. ($14.6 mil. per season). He hit .276-29-105 (.772 OPS) for the Chicago Cubs this past season.

C Stan Brown (30 R) signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers for 6-yrs./$146.4 mil. ($24.4 mil. per season). The final year is a team option. He hit .265-24-75 (.880 OPS) for the San Francisco Giants this past season.

The New York Yankees made it 171 SV from 2002 in their 2003 Bullpen by signing P Tony Ahern (33 R) for 3-yrs./$30.6 mil. ($10.2 mil. per season). The third year is a team option. He was 6-5 with a 2.78 ERA and 37 SV for Seattle this past season.

The Yankee pitching staff is now set to earn $141.5 mil. in 2003.

It is looking like the Portland Beavers will not make any deals here at the Meetings. P Terry Cole is proving a popular piece of trade bait, but none of the 2B or LF's that are not making a ton of money are exciting me or the other GM's are wanting way too much.

1B/OF Ignacio Medina signed with the Kansas City Royals for 6-yrs./$85.7 mil. ($14.3 mil. average per season). The final year is contingent on 550 PA in 2007. He hit .264-28-86 (.803 OPS ) for the Philadelphia Phillies this past season.

P Doug Stone (35 L) signed with the Detroit Tigers for 2-yrs/$34.4 mil. ($17.2 mil. per season). The second year is a player option. He was 14-10 with a 3.54 ERA for the New York Yankees this past season and was 15-7 with an NL-best 2.20 ERA for Montreal in 2001.

Rule V Draft

9 players were picked. Boston and San Diego each took 3. One of the picks the Padres made was 3B Al Haynes who we had recently traded to Houston. Milwaukee lost 2 players. The Beavers lost no one.

The Portland Beavers made a selection! SS Ivan Alvarez (21 L) from Detroit. He will hopefully be the backup shortstop who can hit a little and field a lot that we were looking for. The Tigers discovered him in Panama in April of 1997 as a 16-yr.-old.

We signed a free agent. LF Jeff Johnson (27 L) signed for 4-yrs./$34 mil. ($8.5 mil. per season). He is not the Big Bopper I was hoping for in left, but he has some power and hits for a decent average. Does not seem to walk a lot and his defense could be better, but he is the best we could come up with. He was an All-Star in 2001, but dropped off considerably in 2002.

We are probably done constructing our roster for 2002, unless someone comes to us with an offer we cannot refuse. P Terry Cole is still with the team and will start on Opening Day, if he makes it through Spring Training.....

Spring Training Games begin.

P Alan Gross has been cleared to pitch, so we have 7 candidates for the rotation plus Larry Duke (35 L) and Chris Procell (33 L), two old-timers who will not be in the rotation unless there are injuries. Or I should say, UNTIL there are injuries....

Terry Cole (32 L), Alan Gross (28 L) and Tony Ricketts (28 R) will be in the rotation if healthy, at least in April. We will see if Cole and Gross have anything left after their injuries, but crappy Spring Training results won't affect their opportunity to pitch in April. That leaves 4 pitchers fighting over the last two spots in the rotation: J.T. Burdick (25 L), Angel Rodriguez (25 R), Darrell Massingham (27 R) and Bill Tull (24 R). Tull is the long-shot and Massingham, the favorite.

The rest of the team, including the Bullpen, looks set going into Spring Training. The games will just be to shake off the rust and get in shape and also to get hurt and make us scramble to fill the holes....

I will not report on the games in Spring training, but I will mention that we won our first outing, 13 to 1, over the Pirates and we only gave up 3 hits! We did walk 7, though. No pitcher went more than 2 innings and every one looked in shape! P Terry Cole gave up 1 hit and no walks and struck out 1 in his 2 innings and says his arm feels pretty good afterwards! 3B Ron Peddicord hit a home run. 443 ft!

P Terry Cole, our 19-game winner from last season, is hurt. He is out at least until after the All-Star break. The drama will be whether he is healthy enough by the trading deadline so we can try to get something for him..... I should have traded him this Winter, but I foolishly hoped that he could give us something in 2003....
