1946 World Series

Dave Barnhill hurts hit back in the fifth inning of game one, and has to leave the game, only allowing 1 hit. The Yankees then score 4 runs to take a 4-3 lead going into the bottom of the ninth.

Floyd Baker, an OBP machine, wins the game for the Reds with a 2 run walk off single.

Game 1 hero FloydBaker

Hal Newhouser does what Hal Newhouser does, and 2 hits the Yankees for a game two, 6-0 Reds win.

In game three, Jiro Noguchi allows to one unearned run, and two hits over eight innings, and the Reds prevail 3-2 and lead the series 3-0.

Dave Barnhill misses his start in game four, but it probably wouldn’t have mattered, even though his replacement, Milt Shoffner, pitched great. The Yankees blank the Reds 2-0.

Hal Newhouser gets knocked around, allowing seven runs in 5 innings, and the Yankees are gaining confidence with a 7-3 win.

Noguchi dominates the Yankees for eight innings, and even though he allowed 3 ninth inning runs, he was good enough, and the Reds clinch the series with a 5-3 win!

5 out of the last 6 for the Reds...pretty much solely due to the best pitching staff in the league. Rather impressive

1946-47 Offseason News and Notes

Joe Adcock is the newest Detroit Tiger, as he goes first overall. He’ll be a good power hitter in this league. Probably very good. I think Dusty Rhodes going ninth to Boston is a bit of a steal. He’s power will play in this league.

It's been alot years since I posted the league leaderboards, and since nobody entered the Hall of Fame this year, it's a good time to.

1947 Regular Season

Satchel Paige’s career may be coming to an abrupt end. No injury, he’s just having the worst start to his career. Through 9 starts, he’s 2-5, with a 5.46 ERA. 64 hits, and 27 walks have combined for a career high 1.63 WHIP. The soon to be 41 year old has never had an ERA over 2.65 since 1928.

As we approach the all-star break, both Philly teams lead their respective Leagues. I would love for that to hold up, as two teams playing for a World Series from the same city is just a cool thing. The Philadelphia A’s have only played in 1 World Series. That was 1928, against……the Phillies!

What a tough season for the St. Louis Browns. For the first time in a long time, they are under .500. Way under. Joe DiMaggio is 32, Arky Vaughn and Hank Greenberg are each 35, and Robert Griffith is just beginning his rehab assignment. If they continue to lose, and they can grab an impact player in the draft, this team still has the talent to make on last run next year.

Josh Gibson has declined so much, he’s a backup level guy right now. It’s reminiscent of Shoeless Joe's rapid decline. Gibson has already had a Hall of Fame career. He looked like a shoe in to be the home run king when he had a career total of 536 after his age 32 season. He’s hit 20 total in the last 3 seasons.

Another decline. With 4 wins this year, Satchel Paige has not gotten it together. Now his career is really in jeopardy. He tore a labrum and will now miss 8-9 months. At 41, I doubt he can come back.

The Athletics held up their end of the bargain, winning their first pennant in 19 years. The Phillies however, did not, and were caught by, non other then the Reds of Cincinnati!

The Browns can’t lose right. They go 33-21 over the final 2 months, to take themselves out of a high draft spot. Robert Griffith’s return was too much of a lift!!

The offense is starting to creep back up. Stan Musial wins his 1st batting title.

NL offense is not creeping up, while Dave Barnhill dominates again! Bob Feller breaks his own single season strikeout record set last year….by 2!

The Reds pitching is so much better then the rest of baseball. Dave Barnhill will start 3 games if this goes seven, and he’ll probably win them all. I can’t see the A’s really challenging the Reds here. A’s catcher Andy Seminick will need to really be the one that leads the offense.

A big upset in game 1. Jiro Noguchi allows 5 eighth inning runs, and the Athletics, win the game 9-7. The hero? Andy Seminick, with a go ahead grand slam!!

Seminick

Dave Barnhill came up big in a huge 3-2 complete game win in game two. Going back to Philly down 2-0 would have been tough for the Reds.

Noguchi surprisingly starts game 3, and it turns out to be the right decision. He goes 9 complete, and a four run eighth inning propels the Reds to a 5-2 win.

The A’s score 4 quick runs off of Hal Newhouser, but the Reds explode with a seven run fourth inning, It turns out to be just enough for a 8-6 Reds win.

Dave Barnhill was in to pitch the potential clincher, and while he did well, the Reds offense decided not to leave it all up to him. A 15 run outburst made the job easy for Barnhill, and the Reds are World Champions again!

1947-48 Offseason News and Notes

The Say Hey kid is available. Willie Mays has been drafted 1st overall by the Detroit Tigers. Elston Howard going 12th to Boston is a steal.

Chuck Klein only played 15 years in the Majors, but in reality, he only played about 10. His last 5 years were barely spent on the field. To win 5 MVP's over a 10 year playing career, he was one of the best players of his time, and IMO, deserves this Hall of Fame honor.

William Bell went from a good pitcher, to a great pitcher, and had some fantastic years after the age of 35.

Well that sucks. I posted the 1948 season and post season, and now it seems to be gone. I don't have my notes on the season anymore, so i guess I'll repost with much less detail now.

Ok, so obviously, Josh Gibson decided to retire. He's a young guy, only 36, but his skills are almost gone. Sure fire Hall of Famer.

Satchel Paige won his 421st career game, which passed Kid Nichols with the most wins in a career. Paige still struggled this year though, going 12-16, with a 4.90 ERA.

I don't remember what else I made note of, I don't see any trade pictures saved, so let's move on.

The AL came down to a playoff between the A's and the Red Sox. It was a crazy game. I won't recap it to much. I really hate redoing something I've already done, and it's something I'm just not motivated to do.

The game was tied at 9 going into the ninth. The Red Sox had trailed 6-2 and 9-5.

So Boston goes up 11-9, onto the bottom of the ninth...

Hoot Evers tied the game in dramatic fashion. Onto extra innings and the bottom of the 11th.

Hoot Evers is a hero.
