The Series is tied 1-1

W: Luis Trevino (1-0)
L: Jose Matos (0-1)
S: Wilson Acosta (1)

POG: Luis Trevino > 7 IP, 4 Hits, 2 Runs, 2 Walks, 2 K's
Attendance: 43525

The Cavaliers were hog tied by Trevino, only getting 4 hits off of him, 6 for the game. Janchez and Lewis, the #1 and #2 hitters each had 2 hits. Lewis had 2 RBI's. We just couldn't get the job done. Matos had a great game, going 7.1 innings, allowing 7 hits and 2 runs, with 0 walks and 9 K's! Will Rose is struggled again, and Elmer Hawkins may be my goto lefty next game. Espeically, since my other left Luis Gonzalez will be rested and ready to go. A well played game, just not the outcome I would of liked. On a positive note, Augusto Rodriquez has more hits this post season than he did the previous 2.

Game 3: Arturo Ramirez vs Javier Uberuaga (in Annapolis)

Delaware Conference:
Game 2 - Dover 5, New Castle 2 (Dover Leads 2-0)
New Castle's bats woke up collecting 10 hits, but they didntt come through at the right time. New Castle hit 2-HR's both solo-HR's and left 10 men on base. They are feeling the void left by Peter Peters injury. Dover just kept plugging away and got to Eldridge in the 5th, scoring 3 times, the big blow was a walk to the pitcher Jerry Copeland. The Generals bullpen held the Colonials at bay, with Jack Clow picking up the save (2).

Game 3: Tony Garcia vs Matt Hollis (as the series heads into New Castle)

Off Day Thoughts / Lineup Changes

As we travel to Annapolis for 3 games, I was trying to figure out who would best as the #4 starter. Griffith of Reilly. Seeing the flame next to Reilly's name, I decided Reilly would go in game 4, he has some experience in the playoffs and he has been red hot (3-0 1.55 in September)... Just as soon as I decided it was going to be Reilly, I got a call from Francisco Gonzalez, our trainer, Reilly isn't going to be available for about 4 days. Seems like he has a case of "sinusitis", he has been sent home to get an IV and hopefully feel better, we may need him if this series goes 7...

So our game 3 and 4 starters will both be rookies. Arturo Ramirez in 3 and Vaughan Griffith in 4. Together, during the regular season, they were 28-4 in 41 starts, so I shouldn't be concerned, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't...

On another note, I am going to make a line-up change heading into game 3. Mike Ford who is 0-8, so far will head to the bench Byung-hyun Chong will get the start in his place. Chong will play left-field and Jeff Lewis will move over to first base. We will see how this goes, hopefully Chong will give us a little spark. Other than that our lineup will look at the same as we head into Annapolis for 3 games, with the Series tied.

Game 3 - Conference Championships

Game 3 - Norfolk Cavaliers @ Annapolis Admirals

We head into Annapolis for Game 3 and on the hill will be rookie Arturo Ramirez. Artur put togther an incredible rookie season going 21-3 2.41, and while facing Annapolis he was 2-1 3.60. Ramirez isn't the most fit pitcher and we expect him to go at least 6 innings, he averaged 95 pitches a game this season, so expect the bullpen to get some work. He will be going up against Javier Uberuraga. Javier posted a 11-8 4.06 record in 20 starts, he missed some time with injury, and facing the Cav's he was 0-2 with a 7.11 ERA. The Cav's just have their ex-players numbers. Javier was on our 2016 Championship club.

Byung-hyun Chong will replace Mike Ford in the line-up and bat 6th, giving us 3 lefties in a row. Expect some substitutions later in the game for defense at least.

Inning 1:
Top: Javier Janchez grounds out 3-1. Jeff Lewis grounds out to short. Roberto Perez grounds out to second.
Bottom: Kiyonobu Matsuuri flies out to left. Sahno Busones strikes out. Glenn Jenkins pops out to second.
Norfolk 0, Annapolis 0

Inning 2:
Top: Derek Campbell grounds out to third. King Brock flies out to center. Byung-hyun Chong reaches on an fielding error by 1B Jenkins. Chong steals second. Ed Duke singles to left-center, Chong scores. Jesus Rivera grounds out to short.
Bottom: Steve Williams get plunked by a 99 MPH 2-2 pitch. Jorge Guiterrez grounds into a 1-6-3 DP. Jose Colon grounds out to short.
Norfolk 1, Annapolis 0

Inning 3:
Top: Augusto Rodriquez walks to start off the 3rd. Javier Janchez grounds into a 3-6 FC. Janchez gets gunned out trying to steal 2nd. Jeff Lewis grounds out to third.
Bottom: Roberto Chavez walks. Chavez steals second. Bill Giles strikes out. Chavez steals third. William Sloan flies out to deep center, Chavez trots home. Matsuura grounds out to second.
Norfolk 1, Annapolis 1

Inning 4:
Top: Roberto Perez triples to deep left-field. Derek Campbell doubles down the right-field line, Perez scores. King Brock grounds out to second, Campbell heads over to third. Byung-hyun Chong strikes out. Ed Duke strikes out.
Bottom: Busones grounds out to short. Jenkins walks. Williams walks, Jenkins to second. Jorge Gutierrez walks, bases loaded. Jose Colon singles to right, Jenkins and Williams score, Gutierrez to second. Chavez strikes out. Giles grounds out 3-1, diving play by Lewis saves another run.
Norfolk 2, Annapolis 3

This was an awful inning, watching Ramirez walk 3 hitters. You just can't do that in this situation. Frustrating...

Bullpen: Ron Harris starts to throw in the pen. Ramirez is at 86 pitches and with 3 walks last inning, the chain is short.

Inning 5:
Top: Jesus Rivera lines out to third. Augusto Rodriquez singles into left. Javier Janchez flies out to deep right. Jeff Lewis pops out to first.
Bottom: Sloan strikes out. Matsuura strikes out. Busones singles to left. Busones is gunned down trying to steal.
Norfolk 2, Annapolis 3

Bullpen: Harris sits down for now, Luis Gonzalez (L) and Jamie King (R) get up. Gonzalez will be the new pitcher in the 6th with 2 lefties up.

Inning 6:
Top: Roberto Perez walks. Derek Campbell goes down swinging. Perez steals second. King Brock grounds out to the pitcher. Perez heads to third. Byung-hyun Chong grounds out to second.
Bottom: New Pitcher: Luis Gonzalez comes into the game... Jenkins strikes out. Williams flies out to left. Gutierrez grounds out to short.
Norfolk 2, Annapolis 3

Inning 7:
Top: Ed Duke walks... Pinch Runner: John Phillips comes in to run for Duke... Jesus Rivera hits into the 6-4-3 DP. Augusto Rodriquez grounds out to third.
Bottom: Defense: Phillips stays in the game to catch... Jose Colon doubles to center. Roberto Chavez singles to center, Colon scores. Chavez is gunned down stealing second. Bill Giles singles to right. Sloan flies out to left... New Pitcher: Jamie King enters the game... Matsuura goes down looking.
Norfolk 2, Annapolis 4

Bullpen: Elmer Hawkins starts to throw, as does Ron Harris. Hawkins will be facing the lefties next inning.

Inning 8:
Top: Javier Janchez grounds out to first. Jeff Lewis bounces one off the right-field wall for a double. Roberto Perez lines out to left. Derek Campbell grounds out to short.
Bottom: Busones flies out to right... New Pitcher: Elmer Hawkins, he is tired even after two days off, but here is hoping 77% is good enough... Jenkins grounds out to second. Williams flies out to left.
Norfolk 2, Annapolis 4

Inning 9:
Top: New Pitcher: Closer Wilson Acosta comes in the game for the Admirals... King Brock get plunked... Pinch Runner: Cody Johnson comes in to run for Brock... Byung-hyun Chong flies out to left... Pinch Hitter: Mike Ford comes in to hit for John Phillips... Mike Ford grounds into a 5-4-3 game ending DP...
Norfolk 2, Annapolis 4
Annapolis leads the series 2-1

W: Javier Uberuaga (1-0)
L: Arturo Ramirez (0-1)
S: Wilson Acosta (2)

POG: Javier Uberuaga > 8 IP, 5 Hits, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 K's
Attendance: 52,343

Javier handcuffed us as we couldn't get anything going. After scoring in the second inning I thought it was a good sign. But we just went flat... Five different players had hits, but we just couldn't put anything together. We only left 5 men on, grounding into 2 double plays... What killed us was walks. You can't expect to win when you walk the bases loaded. Ramirez only gave up 2 hits, but he did walk 4 batters. Now I have to figure out what to do with Game 4, Miguel on short rest, or Griffith... This was a very disappointing lost, the offense has gone quiet, we need that game 1 team back. The Annapolis pitchers aren't that good.

Game 4: Vaughan Griffith (0-0) or Miguel Contreras (1-0) vs Carlos Delgado (0-0)

Delaware Conference:
Dover 8, New Castle 6 (Dover leads series 3-0)

Dover looks to be heading back to the Championships with a 3-game lead. They jumped out early score 4x in the first thanks to 2 walks and 3 singles. Then Andres Salinas went deep in the second, giving them a 6-run lead. The Colonials tried to battle back, but a 7th inning Vaughan Lee HR, gave the game to Dover. Jack Clow threw the 9th for the save. Matt Hollis (21-10 2.53 in the regular season) didn't make it out of the second giving up 6 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks. New Castle will try to keep from being swept...

Game 4: Jose Velasquez (1-0) vs Andy Nelson (0-0)

Game 4 - Conference Championships

Game 4 - Norfolk Cavaliers @ Annapolis Admirals

After much diliberation, I have decided that rookie Vaughan Griffith will take the hill in game 4. This is a must win game and its putting a lot of pressure on the kid, but I feel I am better off with a well rested Contreras and Matos in Games 5 and 6. Vaughan made 9 starts with the Cavaliers this season, going 7-1 with a 4.01. Two of those starts came against the Admirals, he went 2-0 with a 3.77. Hopefully he can continue to stay hot... For the Admirals they will counter with Carlos Degado. Delgado went 12-10 for te Admirals with an ERA of 4.98, against the Cav's he was 2-2 5.70.

The first game we scored a ton of runs, and then the bats went cold. We need to get some hits and the right times today and hopefully score some runs. Mike Ford is back in the lineup today batting 6th. He was 3-6 off of Delgado this season, hopefully he can continue that. Griffith is no a short leash, so if he runs into some issues the bullpen is all hands on deck. I really could use Ron Reilly right now...

Vaughan averaged 101 pitches in his 9 starts with the Cav's, and has a Stamina of 12/20. Hopefully he will go at least 6 for us.

Inning 1:
Top: Javier Janchez flies out to right. Jeff Lewis walks. On the hit-and-run, Roberto Perez singles up the middle, Lewis to third. Derek Campbell singles up the middle, Lewis scores, Perez to second. King Brock hits a slow roller past Delgado, and reaches on an infield hit, bases loaded. Mike Ford doubles to left-center, Perez and Campbell score, Brock to third. Ed Duke walks to load the bases... the fastest man on the bases is Brock with a speed of 3... Jesus Rivera flies out to right. Augusto Rodriquez pops out to short... got 3, but what a wasted opportunity.
Bottom: Kiyonobu Matsuura flies out to right. Sanho Busones walks. Glenn Jenkins singles to right, Busones to third. Steve Williams grounds to second. Rivera throws the ball to center for the error, Busones scores, Jenkins to second, Williams to first. Jorge Guiterrez walks, bases loaded. Jose Colon lines out to first. Roberto Chavez grounds into the 5-4 FC.
Norfolk 3, Annapolis 1

Inning 2:
Top: Javier Janchez doubles to right. Jeff Lewis singles to right-center, Janchez scores. Roberto Perez flies out to the warning track in center. Derek Campbell singles to right. Matsuura misses the ball, Perez to third, Campbell to second. King Brock goes down swinging. Mike Ford flies out to center... another missed opportunity.
Bottom: Bill Giles pops out to short. William Sloan flies out to left. Matsuura grounds out to short.
Norfolk 4, Annapolis 1

Inning 3:
Top: Ed Duke flies out to left. Jesus Rivera waves through a change-up for the K. Augusto Rodriquez singles to left. Javier Janchez deposits one into the right-field seats (361 ft), Rodriquez scores. Jeff Lewis grounds back to the pitcher.
Bottom: Busones flies out to right. Jenkins grounds out to short. Williams flies out to deep left-center.
Norfolk 6, Annapolis 1

Inning 4:
Top: Roberto Perez triples to right... New Pitcher: Augusto Flores, replaces Delgado... Derek Campbell singles to left, Perez scores. King Brock hit it like he knew what was coming, HR (380 ft), Campbell scores. Mike Ford strikes out. Ed Duke pops out to first. Jesus Rivera singles on a slow roller past the mound. Augusto Rodriquez grounds out to third.
Bottom: Gutierrez flies out to right. Colon strikes out. Chavez doubles. Giles grounds out to second.
Norfolk 9, Annapolis 1

Inning 5:
Top: Javier Janchez pops out to third. Jeff Lewis flies out to left. Roberto Perez goes down swinging.
Bottom: Sloan grounds out to first. Matsuura singles up the middle. Busones hits into the 4-6-3 inning ender.
Norfolk 9, Annapolis 1

Inning 6:
Top: Derek Campbell singles to right. King Brock singles up the middle, Campbell to second. Mike Ford doubles down the right-field line, Campbell scores, Brock to third... New Pitcher: Curt Webster takes over for Flores... Ed Duke grounds out to short, Brock scores, Ford to third. Jesus Rivera flies out to right. Augusto Rodriquez flies out to center.
Bottom: Jenkins grounds out to first... PH: Rafeal Martinez, replaces Steve Williams... Martinez lines out to short. Gutierrez flies out to right.
Norfolk 11, Annapolis 1

Inning 7:
Top: Javier Janchez grounds out to the pitcher. Jeff Lewis pops out to center. Roberto Perez walks. Derek Campbell singles up the middle, Perez to second. King Brock goes down 3-1.

The Series is tied 2-2!

W: Vaughan Griffith (1-0)
L: Carlos Delgado (0-1)

HR: Javier Janchez (1), King Brock (1), Glenn Jenkins (1), Jose Colon (1)

POG: Derek Campbell > 5-6, all singles, 3 runs, 2 RBI's
Attendance: 52,508

This is the type of things that drive me crazy. We score 13 in game one, 14 in game 4, yet we can't score more than 2 in the games 2 and 3! So should I assume that Contreras and Matos need to be perfect over the next 2 games? Ugh... I am happy that it worked out with Griffith. He was awesome today, and now I have my #1 and #2 in a new '3-game' series! Sitting in a nice spot. Vaughn went 7.2 innings, throwing 113 pitches, allowing 7 hits and 4 runs. He did walk 2 and strike out 2... Javier Janchez and Derek Campbell scored 3 runs each, Janchez and Ford drove in 3 each. Ford went 3-6, guess going with him was a good thing... All starters but Ed Duke had at least 1 hit. Duke is slumping in this series, hitting only .214. Against the lefty in game 5, maybe Renteria will get the start. Hmm... somethings to think about. Winning this game, makes me feel much better about our situation. Its a new series with 1 more game in Annapolis and then home... Hopefully we will bring our bats next game.

Game 5: Miguel Contreras (1-0) vs Jimmy Carr (0-1)

Delaware Conference:
Dover 4, New Castle 1 (Dover wins series 4-0)

New Castle couldn't put anything together, as the Dover Generals, behind the arm of Jose Velasquez took home the Delaware Conference title. Joe Benson tied the game in the 4th with a HR, the next batter Vaughan Lee doubled. He came across to score the winning run, thanks to an error by the first baseman. Thats all the Generals pitchers needed. Velasquez pitching on short rest, went 7 innings, allowing 6 hits and 1 run. Jack Clow saved all four games in the series, struck out two in the 9th! Dover will now wait for the winner of the MarVa Conference.

The good news for Dover Andy Kohl and Claude Bond will be eligible to return to the action. Will they remember to adjust the playoff roster?? I sure hope so.

Series MVP: Jose Velasquez 2-0 14.2 IP, 14 H, 5 BB, 9 K's
Honorable Mention:
Jack Clow 4 G, 4 SV, 4 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 6 K's
Vaughan Lee 17 AB, 1 HR, 5 RBI's, .412 Avg.

Game 5 - Conference Championships

Game 5 - Norfolk Cavaliers @ Annapolis Admirals

Game 5 is a rematch of game 1 starts, as Miguel Contreras will take the hill for the Cavaliers and Jimmy Carr takes the mound for the Admrials. The Cavaliers jumped all over Carr in game one as Miguel held his own. Hopefully the offense doesn't go back to sleep after a huge game 4. This may be the biggest game of the series...

I was close to putting in Jose Renteria in for Ed Duke, but thought better of it. Duke was a big part of this teams success, he hit Carr well in game 1, and he is a better defender. He will get the start, the only change in the lineup from game 4, will be Byung-hyun Chong leading off and playing CF, giving Javier Janchez a rest.

Attendance: 53,793

King Brock set a record with 3 doubles in a MarVa Conf Playoff game.

Walks were the big difference in this game with Rigsby giving up 4 big walks in the 8th, and we took advantage and put the game out of reach. You have to love 7 run innings, capped by a Grand Slam... Miguel on the other hand was solid walking 0 and striking out 7 over 8 innings... Duke had 4 hits, Brock added 3 and Perez, Ford and Rivera each had 2. Brock, Duke and Rivera all scored 3 runs and The offense only struck out 3 times. Hit the ball get on base and put the pressure on the other team... now we are up 3-2 with the final two games at home. Jose Matos going game 6 and Arturo Ramirez in game 7, I have to like our chances. That being said, we face to two pitchers (Luis Trevino and Javier Uberuaga) who shut us down in games 2 and 3. The way this offense hit the ball the last 2 games, I am feeling good...

Game 6 - Conference Championships

Game 6 - Annapolis Admirals @ Norfolk Cavaliers

With a win we will head into the Championships against Dover, and I can't think of anyone who deserves to be on the mound more than Jose Matos. He was our top pitcher this season and deserves this game... he will be going up against Luis Trevino. We lost game 2, 3-2, but the way our offense has been playing we should be in good shape, with 29 runs scored the past 2 games...

No lineup changes will be made, Janchez will be back in the leadoff slot playing CF (it was an accident he wasn't there yesterday). Its nice to be home...

Inning 1:
Top: Kiyonobu Matsuura strikes out. Sanho Busones grounds out to third. Glenn Jenkins doubles down the left-field line. Steve Williams doubles off the right-field wallk, Jenkins scores. Jorge Guiterrez crushes the 1-0 fastball (358 ft) down the left field line, Williams scores. Jose Colon strikes out.

Annapolis 3, Norfolk 0

Inning 2:

Bottom: King Brock flies out to left. Mike Ford loops a single into center. Ed Duke flies out to shallow center. Jesus Rivera grounds to short, reaches on an E6, Ford to third, Rivera to second... New pitcher: Rick Kelly, replaces Trevino on the hill... Augusto Rodriquez singles to left, Ford and Rivera score. Javier Janchez just flies out to right-center.

Norfolk wins the series 4-2!!!

W: Jose Matos (1-1)
L: Luis Trevino (1-1)
S: Dalton Whitaker (1)
HR: Jorge Guiterrez (1), Jose Colon (2)

POG: Roberto Perez > 3-5 3 RBI's, Double
Attendance: 43,615

Series MVP: Roberto Perez 10 hits, .385 Avg, 1 2B, 2 3B, HR, 8 RBI, 6 Runs

This wasn't the best of games for Jose Matos, but he did enough to get the win. He went 7 strong innings, didn't walk anyone and struck out 6!... The biggest difference in this game was fielding. Of our 8 runs, only 2 were earned thanks to 3 errors by substitute short-stop Ryan Campbell. You can't win big games with Ugly Defense... Perez had 3 hits and we had 4 players with 2 each: Jeff Lewis, Mike Ford, Jesus Rivera and Augusto Rodriquez. Another 13 hits today. Ed Duke was the only starter without a hit... Ford, Rivera and Rodriquez all scored 2 times, can't beat it when you 6,8 and 9 batters get on and score!... Augusto Rodriquez has beat his post season slump after collecting 3 hits in 2016, 3 in 2017, he had 9 for the series... We head on to face Dover for the 2nd year in a row in the DelMarVa Championship game!

I do have to say after losing games 2 and 3, I started to get nervous...

DelMarVa Championships - Preview

Dover walked through the Delaware Conference with a 101 wins and are well rested and ready for revenge. The Generals are healthy and well rested. The Generals lead the Delaware Conference in Runs scored (801) and were second in Runs against (594), so they are a complete team, and match up with the Cavaliers very nicely.

The Cavaliers stormed through the MarVa Conference with, a record, 127 wins. They blew out the Admirals in the MarVa Confenence Championships. The Cavaliers will be missing Mauro Candelaria, Kent Davis, Shawn Brock and Ivan Pineda. Kent Davis is out 4 more days, so he will be kept off the roster, he will miss the first 3 games. We come in with two rookies lined up to pitch game 1 and game 2, not ideal, but we should be able to hold our own.

DelMarVa Championship - Game 1

DelMarVa Championships - Game 1
Dover Generals @ Norfolk Cavaliers

Jerry Copeland vs Arturo Ramirez
Jerry Copeland was a 19 game winner this season posting a 2.99 ERA. He is an intelligent veteran pitcher who knows how to pitch. Copeland was injured during last seasons Championship series, so the Cavaliers hitters haven't seen him since the past 2 years. In his post season career Copeland is 2-1 2.23 in 5 GS.
Arturo Ramirez made a name for himself last season in 2 starts, posting a 1-1 record with a 0.61 ERA, then this year he went 21-3 2.41 ERA. He has great control and throws 4 pitches. He missed last years post-season with an injury, he had a rough start in the Conference Championships going 5 innings, allowing just 2 hits, but walked 4 and gave up 3 runs. Hopefully his nerves have settled, and he will be pitching at home so hopefully that will make a difference as well. This will be the first time he has ever faced the Generals.

S: Dalton Whitaker (1)
HR: Andy Kohl (1), Andres Salinas (1)

POG: Andy Kohl : 1-3 1 Run, 2 RBI, HR
Attendance: 43,476
TOG: 2:48

Arturo Ramirez had a strong outting till he gave up those back-to-back HR's in the 6th. Overall he went 6 innings, allowing 5 hits and 4 runs, he walked 2 and struck out 7... Jamie King pitched 2 hitless innings of relief to save the day... The biggest play of the game was the Bases Loaded walk to Derek Campbell. Bad things happen when you walk people, a walk to Campbell, then the next hitter Brock singled in the tying and winning runs... The Cavaliers struck out 5 times, with Rivera and Duke going down 2x each... This team just never gives up, and will fight till the end. Dover kept jumping out in front, but the Cav's did what it takes to get back into the game. Patient and timely hitting has been the key all year long.

Game 2: Tony Garcia (L) vs Vaughan Griffith

DelMarVa Championship - Game 2

DelMarVa Championships - Game 2
Dover Generals @ Norfolk Cavaliers

Game 2 in the 2017 Championship series, saw Tony Garcia go 7 strong innings holding the Cavaliers to just 4 hits and 1 run. Tony Garcia is the only lefty starter on the Generals staff. Last year we struggled versus lefties, but this season we hit lefties much better. Garcia looks to match his success from last year as the Cav's look to take an early 2 game lead. The Cavaliers are countering with Vaughan Griffith, he is 9 starts into his big league career and will be making his second playoff start. Hopefully the nerves don't get the best of the 22-year old kid. My biggest concern for Griffith is the amount of fly ball outs he gets. His ground ball pct is 47% and his movement is only a 8/20. His stuff and control are 15/20, so if he can keep the ball in the park he should be able to win. But that low movement and lower ground ball pct is concerning.

Even though we are facing a lefty, the lineup remains unchanged. Janchez has been doing a great job leading off and he doesn't seem phased by lefty pitching. Jeff Lewis has hit Garcia well during his career (.480), so I am feeling good about this game.

Inning 1:
Top: Pedro Galvan goes down swinging. Joe Benson pops out to left-center. Andy Kohl walks. Andres Salinas hits a routine fly out to center.
Bottom: Javier Janchez flies out to right. Jeff Lewis grounds out to second. Roberto Perez pops out to short.
Dover 0, Norfolk 0

Inning 2:
Top: Claude Bond flies out to center. Jon Fiske drives one over the left-field wall (393ft) for the first run of the game. Chris Thomas did him a little better hitting one of the right-center field wall (433 ft) back-to-back. Jose Chavez singles up the middle. Vaughan Lee grounds into a 6-4 FC. Pedro Galvan singles to right, Lee heads over to third. Joe Benson pops to second.
Bottom: Derek Campbell grounds out to third. King Brock lines out to third. Mike Ford flies out to left.
Dover 2, Norfolk 0

Inning 3:
Top: Andy Kohl flies out to left. Andres Salinas pops out to short. Claude Bond goes down looking.
Bottom: Ed Duke flies out to left. Jesus Rivera cuts the lead in half, going yard (409 ft) over the left-center wall. Augusto Rodriquez grounds out to third. Javier Janchez goes down swinging.
Dover 2, Norfolk 1

Inning 4:
Top: Jon Fiske grounds out to short. Chris Thomas singles up the middle. Jose Chavez flies out to left. Thomas steals second, Duke fires to ball into center, Thomas ends up on third. Vaughan Lee goes down looking.
Bottom: Jeff Lewis flies out to deep right. Roberto Perez grounds out to third. Derek Campbell whiffs on the slider.
Dover 2, Norfolk 1

Inning 5:
Top: Pedro Galvan gets hit by the pitch... New Pitcher: Ron Reilly enters the game... Joe Benson goes down swinging. Andy Kohl flies out to left. Galvan swipes second, and Duke once again fires it off into center, Galvan is safe at third. Andres Salinas goes down swinging.
Bottom: King Brock singles to right. Mike Ford singles to left, Brock to second. After the botched sac-attempt Ed Duke flies out to left. Jesus Rivera flies out to center. Augusto Rodriquez grounds into a 6-4 FC.
Dover 2, Norfolk 1

Inning 6:
Top: Claude Bond grounds out to short. Jon Fiske grounds out to short. Chris Thomas singles to left. Jose Chavez strikes out.
Bottom: Javier Janchez singles to right. Jeff Lewis pops out to second. Roberto Perez singles to left, Janchez to second. Derek Campbell singles up the middle, Janchez scores, Perez to second. King Brock goes down swinging. Mike Ford grounds into the 6 FC, stranding two.
Dover 2, Norfolk 2

Inning 7:
Top: Vaughan Lee singles up the middle. Pedro Galvan singles to right, Lee to second. Joe Benson grounds into a 3-6 FC, Lee head to third. Andy Kohl singles to right, Lee scores, Benson to second. Andres Salinas hits into the 4-6 FC, Benson heads to third. Claude Bond strikes out.
Bottom: Ed Duke flies out to center. Jesus Rivera grounds out to short. Augusto Rodriquez triples to left-center. Javier Janchez flies out to the warning track in left-center.
Dover 3, Norfolk 2

inning 8:
Top: Joe Fiske flies out to left... New Pitcher: Luis Gonzalez, a lefty to face the lefty... Chris Thomas grounds out to the pitcher... New Pitcher: Ron Harris replaces Gonzalez... Jose Chavez goes down swinging.
Bottom: Jeff Lewis walks. Roberto Perez flies out to center. Derek Campbell flies out to right. King Brock doubles to left-center, Lewis scores... Pinch Runner: BH Chong comes in to run for Brock... Mike Ford flies out to right.
Dover 3, Norfolk 3

Inning 9:
Top: Vaughan Lee goes down swinging. Pedro Galvan goes down swinging. Joe Benson walks. Andy Kohl singles to left, Benson to second. Andres Salinas, bases loaded... New Pitcher: Dalton Whitaker... Claude Bond gets hit in the back, Benson trots on home, bases loaded. Joe Fiske bloops one to left, Kohl crosses the plate, bases remain loaded... Elmer Hawkins replaces Whitaker to face the lefty... Pinch Hitter: Lucio Morin will hit for Chris Thomas... Morin flies out to center.
Bottom: New Pitcher: Jack Clow comes into the pitcher, Clow has pitched in ever post season, but 2016, and has appeared in 30 post season games, He holds a 1.45 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP... Ed Duke grounds out to first. Jesus Rivera flies out to center. Augusto Rodriquez flies out to center.
Dover 5, Norfolk 3
The Series is tied 1-1

W: Tony Garcia (1-0)
L: Ron Harris (0-1)
S: Jack Clow (1)
HR: Chris Thomas (1), Jon Fiske (1), Jesus Rivera (1)

POG: Chris Thomas > 3-4 HR, 1 RBI, 1 Run, SB
Attendance: 43,578

Recap: The Cavaliers just couldn't put anything together as Tony Garcia was in complete control. Garcia went 8 innings, allowing 8 hits and 3 runs. He only had 3 K's, but he got them when he needed... Vaughan Griffith made it through 4, throwing 89 pitches, allowing 5 hits and 2 runs... Ron Reilly picked him up going 3.1 allowing 4 hits and 1 run while striking out 4... The 9th inning was brutal, with walks, hit batters. The Generals scored 2 runs on 2 hits, 2 walks and a HBP... King Brock had 2 of the Cavaliers 8 hits... Ed Duke has 2 errors behind the plate, the Generals are a super fast team, I may need to look at my other options (Renteria or Phillips)... In two games our pitching has given up 4 HR's. Hopefully with our 1 and 2 coming up in games 3 and 4, we will have better luck keeping the ball in the park... The Cavaliers never gave up, but in the end they just didn't have enough.

Game 3: The series shifts to Dover and the Cavaliers Ace will see his first appearance. Miguel Contreras will go up against the Delaware Conference Championship MVP, Jose Velasquez. Should be a good game and a rematch of the Game 1 of the 2017 Championships. Contreras pitched a 4 hit shutout and Velasquez went 7 innings allowing 3 hits and 0 runs. Game 3 has the makes for a classic, and a turning point...

DelMarVa Championships - Game 3

DelMarVa Championships - Game 3
Norfolk Cavaliers @ Dover Generals

We head into Dover with the series tied at 1, and we have our Aces set to go the next 2 games. Miguel Contereras will try to continue his playoff success against the Generals, he won 2 games in last years Championship Series, allowing 1 run in 16 innings. The Dover Generals have a powerful and fast lineup and they are ready to Jose Velasquez a win, he lost Game 1 and 4 in the 2017 Series. He is fully rested, so he should be on top of his game. The Cav's will have their hands full.

The series moves into a Delaware Conference stadium, so there will be no DH, which means Mike Ford will be sent to the bench and King Brock will play first. Brock made 4 appearances at first base this season, between him and Mike Ford firsbase is our weakest defended posistion. Mike Ford is hitting .281-0-5 during the playoffs and only .250-0-1 so far this series. Ed Duke is going to start behind the plate, but John Phillips is going to be loose and ready to come in as a defensive replacment (and possible sooner if the Generals take advantage of Duke). Top: Ed Duke pops out to second. Jesus Rivera lines out to center. Augusto Rodriquez grounds out to third.
Bottom: Jon Fiske strikes out looking. Chris Thomas grounds out to first. Jose Chavez singles to center... Pinch Hitter: Vaughan Lee will hit for An... Lee flies out to deep right.
Norfolk 3, Dover 1
Norfolk leads the series 2-1

W: Miguel Contreras (1-0)
L: Jose Velasquez (0-1)

POG: Miguel Contreras > 9 IP, 8 Hits, 1 Run, 1 Walk, 9 K's, 123/83 PI/PS
Attendance: 39,030

Game Recap: This game was billed as a classic and it turned out to be just that. Contreras and Velasquez were both on top of their game... The Cav's didn't hit the ball, well, but they hit it good enough. Seven total hits, with Jeff Lewis and Derek Campbell collecting 2 each... Miguel Contrears was 0-2 with 2 K's, but he had a very important sac-fly in the 5th. Turned out to be the winning run... Velasquez is now 0-3 vs the Cav's in the Championship Series... Leaving Miguel Conteras in to face Vaughan Lee in the 9th almost back-fired, at 120 pitches he was well above his P/G average of 100. Lee just got under it a little.

Predicted Upcoming Pitching Match-ups:
Game 4: Jose Matos makes his first start in the series. He pitched game 2 in 2017 and held the Generals to 2 runs on 8 hits over 6 innings. We will need him to be better tomorrow. He will go up against Jerry Copeland, who will be pitching on short rest. Copeland went 6 innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 runs, throwing 101 pitches.

Game 5: Arturo Ramirez vs Tony Garcia
Game 6*: Jose Velasquez vs Vaughan Griffith
Game 7*: Jerry Copeland vs Miguel Contreras
* if necessary

DelMarVa Championships - Game 4

DelMarVa Championships - Game 3
Norfolk Cavaliers @ Dover Generals

Jose Matos is 1-1 with a 4.40 so far in this seasons playoff, and he faces the Generals well rested. Jerry Copeland threw 101 pitches just four days ago, take a no decision in the game 1 of the Championship Series. Both pitchers say they are ready to go, Matos is looking to make up for the game 2 loss from last years series. Should be a fun game...

** The single by Pedro Galvan broke up the no hitter **

Inning 7:

Andres Salinas singles to center, Janchez misses the ball runners move up, Kohl to third, Salinas to second. Claude Bond drives the 1-1 pitch over the CF wall (441 ft), scoring Kohl and Salinas, for the walk-off game winner!!!!!
Norfolk 2, Dover 4
The Series is tied 2-2

W: Jack Clow (1-0)
L: Dalton Whitaker (0-1)
HR: Claude Bond (1)

POG: Jose Matos > 8.2 IP, 2 H, 2 Runs, 2 BB's 5 K's
Attendance: 39,145

Recap: This one will haunt me. Did I pull Matos too early? He was tired and was up to 109 pitches, our closer was ready to go in the pen, and only needed 1 out. I won't sleep well tonight... Jose Matos was AWESOME today and he lead us to the brink of victory. He brought his A game and dominated the Generals... Jerry Copeland showed some signs of fatigue giving up 2 runs in the first, but made the adjustment and held the Cav's to just 2 hits over the next 7 innings... 3 hits and 2 runs in the first, had me excited bu thte offense decided to take a nap. We only left 2 runners on base, both times it was Derek Campbell on third... Jeff Lewis and Derek Campbell each had 2 hits, the Cav's had 5 total... Jack Clow has now pitched in 31 post-season games... Is Dover's pitching really this good? After scoring 35 runs in the final 3 games of the Conference Championships, we just can't seem to put anything together... Its a best of 3 series now, and we have 2 rookies then Miguel. I am looking forward to getting back to Norfolk...

Predicted Pitching Matchups:
Game 5: Arturo Ramirez (0-0) vs Tony Garcia (1-0)
Arturo Ramirez gave up 5 hits and 4 runs in 6 innings in Game, giving up HR's to Kohl and Salinas. It was the first time he ever faced the Generals; will it be different the second time around?? Tony Garcia gave up 8 hits and 3 runs, just 3 days ago, so he will be working on short rest. He got roughed up last year working on short rest and hopefully this year won't be much different. Being a lefty he will force us to make some lineup changes. Mike Ford will be in at first, replacing King Brock and I will sleep on starting Ed Duke vs John Phillips. Duke is 1-15 this series and Phillips is a better defender. Decisions to be made.

Game 6: Jose Velasquez (0-1) vs Vaughan Griffith (0-0)
Game 7*: Jerry Copeland (0-0 2 ND's) vs Miguel Contreras (1-0)
* if necessary

DelMarVa Championships - Game 5

DelMarVa Championships - Game 5
Norfolk Cavaliers @ Dover Generals

Arturo Ramirez vs Tony Garcia
Our last game in Dover before shifting back home to Norfolk. This is a huge game for the Cavaliers as we have to rookie pitchers up in the next 2 games. I'd like to win this one and go home in a tie. Tony Garica pitched great in game 2, so we will see what happens today. We got to Tony last year in his second start, also on short rest, so hopefully we will do the same today.

Making some lineup changes today, we will have John Phillips catching, resting Ed Duke, and Mike Ford will be at first in place of King Brock, so our lefties will be resting. The only lefty in the game will be Javier Janchez who has been hitting the ball.

Inning 1:
Top: Javier Janchez flies out to center. Roberto Perez lines out to right. Jeff Lewis grounds out to third.

Norfolk 4, Dover 1

Inning 5:
Top: John Phillips grounds out to short. Augusto Rodriquez grounds out to third. Arturo Ramirez strikes out.
Bottom: Chris Thomas gets plunked. Jose Chavez grounds out to third, Thomas goes to second... Pinch Hitter: Lucio Morin will pinch hit for Tony Garcia... Morin walks. Pedro Galvan grounds into a 4-6 FC, Thomas heads to third. Joe Benson flies out to left.
Norfolk 4, Dover 1

Inning 6:
Top: Now Pitching: Colin Ellison comes into pitch... Javier Janchez doubles down the left-field line. Roberto Perez walks. Jeff Lewis strikes out. Derek Campbell singles to right, Janchez scores, Perez to second. Mike Ford singles to right-center, Perez scores, Campbell to second... New Pitcher: Mendel Schutters, replaces Ellison on the hill... Jesus Rivera flies out to deep right, Campbell goes to third. John Phillips flies out right.
Bottom: New Pitcher: 101 pitches is enough for Ramirez, as Jamie King takes over on the hill. Ed Duke replaces Ramirez in the line and will catch... Andy Kohl gets hit by a pitch. Andres Salinas grounds into the 6-4-3 DP. Claude Bond gets drilled. John Fiske doubles down the left-field line, Bond scores... New Pitcher: Elmer Hawkins comes into pitch, replacing King... Chris Thomas strikes out.
Norfolk 6, Dover 2

Inning 7:
Top: Augusto Rodriquez flies out to right. Ed Duke walks. Javier Janchez walks, Duke to second. Roberto Perez walks, Duke to third, Janchez to second. Jeff Lewis singles up the middle, Duke and Janchez score, Perez to second... New Pitcher: Ray Anderson, replacing Schutters... Derek Campbell grounds out third, Perez to third, Lewis to second. Mike Ford grounds out to third.
Bottom: Jose Chavez flies out to center... Pinch Hitter: Vaughan Lee pinch hits for the pitcher Anderson... Lee grounds out to short. Pedro Galvan walks. Galvan steals second. Joe Benson walks, moving Galvan to second... New Pitcher: Dalton Whitaker comes replacing Hawkins... A wild-pitch moves Galvan to third, Benson to second. Andy Kohl sits on a Whitaker fastball and rives it over the CF wall (447 ft), scoring Galvan and Benson. Andres Salanis, grounds out to the pitcher.
Norfolk 8, Dover 5

Inning 8:
Top: New Pitcher: Cho-Yeong An comes in to pitcher... Jesus Rivera flies out left... Pinch Hitter: Byung-hyun Chong will come in to hit for Whitaker... Chong grounds out to first. Augusto Rodriquez grounds out to second.

Norfolk 8, Dover 6

Inning 9:
Top: New Pitcher: Woody Bauer comes in the game... Ed Duke strikes out. Javier Janchez grounds out 4-1. Roberto Perez grounds out to second.
Bottom: Joe Benson grounds out third... New Pitcher: Ron Harris comes in to pitcher, replacing Rose... Andy Kohl flies out left. Andres Salinas walks. Claude Bond singles to right, Salinas to third. Jon Fiske, grounds out to the pitcher.
Norfolk 8, Dover 6
Norfolk leads the series 3-2

W: Arutro Ramirez (1-0)
L: Tony Garcia (1-1)
S: Ron Harris (1)
HR: Javier Janchez (1), Andy Kohl (2)

POG: Javier Janchez > 3-5, 2B, HR, 4 Runs, 2 RBI's
Attendance: 39,272

Recap: Arturo Ramirez went 5 innings, allowing 2 hits and 1 run, walking 3 and striking out 6. He was everything we needed and more... The bullpen is just struggling, Jamie King: 2/3 IP, 1 Run, Elmer Hawkins: 1 IP, 2 runs, 2 BB's... Dalton Whitaker: 1/3 IP, 1 H, 1 Run, HR... Will Rose 1 1/3: 2 hits 1 Run... Ron Harris: 2/3 1 H... After the past 2 games, I am losing my confidence in Dalton Whitaker. Dover just seems to have his number... We have Vaughan Griffith and Ron Reilly rested for game 6... The offense had 14 hits and we left 11 runners on base... Mike Ford and Janchez each had 3 hits. Roberto Perez, Jeff Lewis, Derek Campbell and Arturo Ramirez all added 2... Very happy with this teams performance, our pen could be better, but we now only have to win 1 of 2 with Miguel Contreras pitching in one of those games... I will think about who I want to start game 6, and enjoy this victory. Some pressure has been taken off this team, but we still have one more game to win...I am happy we are heading home.

Predicted Pitching Matchups:
Game 6: Jose Velasquez vs Vaughan Griffith or Ron Reilly
Game 7*: Jerry Copeland vs Miguel Contreras
* if necessary

DelMarVa Championships - Game 6

DelMarVa Championships - Game 6
Norfolk Cavaliers @ Dover Generals

Jose Velasquez (0-1) vs. Ron Reilly (0-0)
Jose Velasquez took the loss in game 3, going up against Miguel Contreras, but he was on his game going 7 innings allowing just 2 runs on 5 hits. He keep the Cavaliers powerful offense at bay, while striking out 6. He will be starting on short rest, throwing 103 pitches 3 days ago. Ron Reilly will get the start for the Cav's. Ron pitched 3.1 innings allowing 4 hits and 1 run, but he has been on fire lately and I need someone who will eat some innings. Him and Vaughan are very similiar pitchers, but I am going with my gut. Plus Reilly has a 65% groundball pct and Vaughan 47%. The power of the Generals scares me, so hopefully this is the wise choice.

We are back in Norfolk, which means the DH is upon us once again. King Brock and Mike Ford will both be back in the lineup and Ed Duke will be behind the plate.

Inning 1:
Top: Pedro Galvan singles to right. Joe Benson pops out to the catcher. Andy Kohl flies out to center. Pedro Galvan steals second. Andres Salinas walks. Claude Bond flies out to left.
Bottom: Javier Janchez grounds out to the pitcher. Jeff Lewis flies out to right. Roberto Perez pops out to the pitcher.
Dover 0, Norfolk 0

Inning 2:
Top: Jon Fiske grounds out to third. Chris Thomas strikes out. Jose Chavez grounds out to short.
Bottom: Derek Campbell grounds out to short. King Brock flies out to deep left. Mike Ford grounds out to third.
Dover 0, Norfolk 0

Inning 3:
Top: Vaughan Lee singles to right. Pedro Galvan grounds out 3-1, Lee to second. Joe Benson pops out short. Andy Kohl lines one into left, Lee moves up to third. Andres Salines grounds out to short.
Bottom: Ed Duke grounds out to short. Jesus Rivera pops out to center. Augusto Rodriquez grounds out to the pitcher.
Dover 0, Norfolk 0

Inning 4:
Top: Claude Bond crushes a 2-2 pitch over the center field wall (431 ft). Jon Fiske strikes out. Chris Thomas grounds out to first. Jose Chavez strikes out.
Bottom: Javier Janchez grounds out to second. Jeff Lewis sinlges to right-center. Roberto Perez flies out to left. Derek Campbell draws the walk, Lewis to second. King Brock grounds out to second.
Dover 1, Norfolk 0

Inning 5:
Top: Vaughan Lee flies out to center. Pedro Galvan grounds to short. Joe Benson flies out to left.
Bottom: Mike Ford flies out to center. Ed Duke walks. Jesus Rivera grounds into a 5-4 FC. Augusto Rodriquez grounds out to third.
Dover 1, Norfolk 0

Inning 6:
Top: Andy Kohl grounds out to third. Andres Salinas grounds out to second. Claude Bond gets drilled by a fastball... Injury: Bond will have to be removed, San-pao Xin enters the game to PR... Jon Fiske walks, Xin to second. Chris Thomas goes down swinging.
Bottom: Javier Janchez doubles down the right field line. Jeff Lewis singles to right, Janchez scores. Roberto Perez singles to left, Lewis to second. Derek Campbell singles to right, Lewis is gunned out at home, Perez to second. King Brock flies out to deep left. Mike Ford grounds out to short.
Dover 1, Norfolk 1

** I took the chance and sent Lewis home, but it didn't work out. In hindsight, with no outs it was a mistake. Could cost us this game **

Inning 7:
Top: Jose Chavez gets hit by the pitch. Vaughan Lee walks, Chavez to second... New Pitcher: Elmer Hawkins replaces Reilly on the hill... Pedro Galvan pops out on a sac-bunt attept. Joe Benson strikes out... New Pitcher: Jamie King comes in to face the RH power bats... Andy Kohl bloops one into right, Chavez scores, Lee to second. Andres Salinas walks to load the bases. San-Pao Xin flies out to the warning track in center.
Bottom: Ed Duke grounds out 3-1. Jesus Rivera flies out to center. Augusto Rodriquez singles to right. Javier Janchez strikes out.
Dover 2, Norfolk 1

Inning 8:
Top: Jon Fiske reaches on a dribbler in front of the plate... New Pitcher: Luis Gonzalez comes in replacing King... Pinch Hitter: Dover counters by Pinch Hitting Lucio Morin for Chris Thomas... Morin grounds into a 5-4-3 DP. Jose Chavez strikes out.
Bottom: Jeff Lewis strikes out. Roberto Perez walks. Derek Campbell grounds out to second, Perez moves up to second. King Brock grounds out to the pitcher.
Dover 2, Norfolk 1

Inning 9:
Top: Vaughan Lee goes down looking. Pedro Galvan grounds out 3-1. Joe Benson grounds out to third.
Bottom: New Pitcher: Jack Clow comes into pitch. Clow has throw 2 perfect innings so far this series... Mike Ford doubles to deep right, but gets GUNNED out at third trying to stretch it. Ed Duke flies out to left. Jesus Rivera flies out to the warning track in left.
Dover 2, Norfolk 1
The Series is tied 3-3

W: Jose Velasquez (1-1)
L: Ron Reilly (0-1)
S: Jack Clow (2)
HR: Claude Bond (2)

POG: Jose Velasquez >> 8 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 2 K's, 97 pitches

Recap: Two mistakes on the bath paths cost us this game. Sending Lewis home in the 6th and then Mike Ford trying to stretch a lead-off double into a triple in the 9th. I am debating about sitting him at this point for game 7. Not a happy camper... The choice to go with Reilly worked out. Reilly went 6, allowed 4 hits and 2 runs. He had some control issues, but holding Dover to 2 runs was all we asked for... The offense was quiet yet again. Velasquez dominated us. Overall we had 7 hits, 2 doubles. No one seems to be hitting this series for the Cavaliers. Derek Campbell is hitting .450-0-6, and Jeff Lewis .375-0-4, but then we go down hill. Ed Duke: .053, Jesus Rivera: .087, Augusto Rodriquez .100-0-0, King Brock: .250-0-3... This team has never fallen off like this in the Championships, so I am not sure what to do. Do I bench Ed Duke? Better defense would play, but the bat won't be as good, but Duke isn't hitting. Jesus Rivera may not play game 7 either. I need some spark to this offense... I really want to bench Mike Ford, but I can't he has gotten a hit in every game of the series, I can't sit down one of my hotter hitters...

The last Pitching Matchup:
Game 7: Jerry Copeland vs Miguel Contreras

Jerry Copeland (0-0 2 GS) will get the ball for the third time. Copeland has pitched well this series holding the Cav's to 9 hits in 14 innings, but has two ND's. He will go up against Miguel Contreras who threw a great game 3, 9 IP, 8 Hits, 1 Run. Should be a fun game.

DelMarVa Championships - Game 7

DelMarVa Championships - Game 7
Norfolk Cavaliers @ Dover Generals

Jerry Copeland (0-0) vs Miguel Contreras (1-0)
Jerry Copeland (0-0 2 GS) will get the ball for the third time. Copeland has pitched well this series holding the Cav's to 9 hits in 14 innings, but has two ND's. Copeland only threw 80 pitches last outing, so he should be pretty rested for this game. He will go up against Miguel Contreras who threw a great game 3, 9 IP, 8 Hits, 1 Run. Both pitches are having solid playoffs, this game is really looking to be a pitchers duel.

Lineup: I decided to make only one change. It was tough not pulling Ed Duke, but hopefully the L vs R matchup works out for me. If there was a lefty on the hill he would no doubt not be in the game... the change I did make is sitting Jesus Rivera and giving the start to cody Johnson. Cody is actually a little better defender than Jesus, but he has hitting has always been in question. He is 0-9 lifetime in the playoffs.

Inning 1:

Cody Johnson singles to right-center, Ford scores, Duke to second. Augusto Rodriquez walks to load the bases. Javier Janchez grounds into a 4-6 FC, Duke scores, Johnson to third. Janchez steals second. Jeff Lewis flies out to right.

Dover 1, Norfolk 3

Bottom: Augusto Rodriquez grounds out to third. Javier Janchez singles up the middle. Jeff Lewis strikes out. Janchez advances to second on the E-1. Roberto Perez grounds out to the pitcher.
Dover 1, Norfolk 3

Inning 6:
Top: Andy Kohl reaches on an infield hit. Andres Salinas sinlges up the middle, Kohl to second. San-pao Xin strikes out. Kohl is gunned out trying to steal third, Salnias goes to second. Jon Fiske singles up the middle, Salinas scores. Chris Thomas walks, Fiske to second. Jose Chavez singles to left, Fiske scores, Thomas to second... New Pitcher: Ron Harris, replaces Miguel Contreras. Contreras has thowing 94 pitches and his exhuasted. Should of been removed 2 hitters ago... Vaughan Lee flies out to center, sliding catch by Janchez.
Bottom: Derek Campbell strikes out. King Brock walks... New Pitcher: Medel Schutters replaces Copeland on the hill. Copeland threw 98 pitches... Pinch Runner: Byung-hyun Chong replaces Brock at first... Mike Ford flies out to center. Chong steals second. Ed Duke walks. Johnson grounds into a 6-4 FC.
Dover 3, Norfolk 3

Inning 7:
Top: New Pitcher: Elmer Hawkins comes in for Ron Harris... Pedro Galvan grounds out to second. Joe Benson grounds out to third... New Pitcher: Now pitching Jose Matos... Andy Kohl walks. Andres Salinas laces a line to right, Kohl to second. San-pao Xin grounds out to short.
Bottom: Augusto Rodriquez dumps one into center. Javier Janchez flies out to left. Jeff Lewis loops one to left-center, Rodriquez to second. Dover 4, Norfolk 10
Norfolk wins the Series for the third time in a row!!!!

W: Jose Matos (1-0)
L: Medel Schutters (0-1)
HR: Derek Campbell (2)

POG: Derek Campbell > 2-4 2 HR's, 2 runs, 4 RBI's
Attendance: 43,700

Recap: I almost cost us the game, when I didn't realize that Miguel Contreras was on the bring of exhaustion. A half-way warmed up Ron Harris retired the lone batter he faced with 2 men on, with one pitch, and got us out of a bad situation... The bullpen stepped it up this game, even if Dalton Whitaker continued to struggle. In the playoffs he threw 8 games, 4.2 innings, allowing 10 hits, 5 runs and 3 HR's!... Harris, Matos, Hawkins and Gonzalez combined for 2.3 innings of scoreless ball... Ed Duke gunned out 2 guys today, which was huge... The offense finally got something going, collecting 13 hits and 10 runs. Janchez, Campbell, Ford and Cody Johnson all had 2 hits. Johnson and Roberto Perez drove in 2 each... Derek Campbell went deep in what is quite possibly his final at-bat as a Cavaliers... As long as we got to the Generals bullpen we were good... The key to this game, might of been the injury to Claude Bond (.238-2-5 in the series).

DelMarVa Championship MVP

The MVP of the DelaMarVa Championship Series goes to Derek Campbell. Campbell got at least one hit in all 7 games, and he drove in a run in 6 of 7. For the series he ended up with 11 hits, 3 runs, a triple, 2 HR's, 3 runs and 10 RBI's. He was the offensive spark the Cavaliers needed. No other Cavaliers drove in more than 4 (Jeff Lewis) or hit over .400 (Ford .364). It was a close race between him and Miguel Contreras, but not getting that second win, put Campbell over the top.

This season was quite a contrast from his two previous playoffs:
2016: 4 Games 2-12 .167-1-4, 3 runs
2017: 9 Games 5-38 .132-2-5, 4 runs
2018: 13 Games 23-53 .434-3-17, 10 runs

Congrats Derek Campbell

Norfolk Cavaliers Capture League Championship

The 2018 DELMARVA Baseball League season came to a close today at Caviliers Ballpark, where the Norfolk Cavaliers whipped the Dover Generals 10-4 and won their 4th League Championship in history.

Norfolk got there by compiling a 127-35 mark during regular season play and claiming the first spot in the MarVa Conference Western Division standings.

The Cavaliers won the series 4-3 in games.

2018 League Leaders

2018 League Leaders
Delaware Conference:

AVG: Bruce Walker (Milford Clippers) .322
Hits: Kevin Norris (Milford Clippers) 199
2B: Leonard Davis (Lewes Braves) 43
3B: Jose Chavez (Dover Generals) 8
HR: Andy Kohl (Dover Generals) 47
RBI: Andy Kohl (Dover Generals) 128
Runs: Richard Tayler (Wilmington Iron Pigs) 107
SB: Pedro Galvan (Dover Generals) 55
Total Bases: Don White (Newark Millers) 328
OPS: Peter Peters (New Castle Colonials) 1.005
WAR(t): Peter Peters (New Castle Colonials) 7.2
WAR(t): Errol Williams (Newark Millers) 7.2

The Delaware Confernece Silver Slugger race will be interesting. Peters lead the league in WAR and has one the award 3 times, but had an off year. Andy Kohl the catcher for the Dover Generals posted 5.7 WAR and in my mind is the front runner. He had a career year .308-47-128, 96 runs. If he doesn't win it will be a big surprise.

ERA: Tony Garcia (Dover Generals) 2.34
W: Matt Hollis (New Castle Colonials) 21
K's: Matt Hollis (New Castle Colonials) 255
Saves(t): Aaron Nicholas (Newark Millers) 35
Saves(t): Michael Willard (Wilmington Iron Pigs) 35
L: John Jordan (Seaford Blue Jays) 21
IP: Anthony Dundee (Georgetown Sixteens) 243.2
K/9: Marcos Estrada (Wilmington Iron Pigs) 10.44
K/BB: Jarred Perry (Lewes Braves) 15.18
WHIP: Marcos Estrada (Wilmington Iron Pigs) 0.98
WAR: Marcos Estrada (Wilmington Iron Pigs) 8.7

This is going to be an intersting race. My guess is Matt Hollis will walk away with the award this year. Hollis posted a 8.4 WAR and a 21-10 2.53 record. Marcos Estrada has won the award the past two seasons, and had a very comparable year this year with his previous two (16-10 2.46), but the low win total will probably keep him from his third straight.

Aaron Nicholas continues to get the job done, saving 30+ games for the 4th time in his career. Nicholas is the ripe at of 41, he will be 42 at th start of next season and he has shown interest in coming back. A free agent who made 8.5 million last season, should be interesting to see what happens. He is 13 saves away from becoming the third player in the DBL with 200+ saves.

MarVa Conference:
AVG: Glenn Jenkins (Annapolis Admirals) .383
Hits: Kent Davis (Nofolk Cavaliers) 252
2B: King Brock (Norfolk Cavaliers) 49
3B: Roberto Perez (Norfolk Cavaliers) 11
HR: Abraham Thomas (Washington Senators) 60
RBI: Abraham Thomas (Washington Senators) 155
Runs: Glenn Jenkins (Annapolis Admirals) 142
SB: Jeff Lewis (Norfolk Cavaliers) 54
Total Bases: Abraham Thomas (Washington Senators) 410
OPS: Glenn Jenkins (Annapolis Admirals) 1.056
WAR: Glenn Jenkins (Annapolis Admirals) 11.1

The Silver Slugger race in the MarVa Conf is up for grabs. The last two years it was won by Roberto Perez, and even though he put up similiar numbers this year, I don't think he will win it (.329-24-120), eventhough he put together an all-around solid season. His name shows up all over the place no the leaderboard . Glenn Jenkins name is, also, all over the leader board 227 hits, 150 walks, 142 runs, he could take it home. I really don't know how I'd take in this race but it will be one of these three guys: Jenkins, Perez or Jeff Lewis

ERA: Jose Matos (Norfolk Cavaliers) 1.90
W: Jose Matos (Norfolk Cavaliers) 23
K's: Todd Rutledge (Baltimore Barons) 205
Saves: Will Wilson (Baltimore Barons) 45
L: Jose Villa (Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs) 21
IP: Don Sweetapple (Richmond Cardinals) 239.0
K/9: Pedro Rivera (Ocean City Tourists) 8.91
K/BB: Miguel Contreras (Norfolk Cavaliers) 11.75
WHIP: Miguel Contreras (Norfolk Cavaliers) 0.89
WAR: Miguel Contreras (Norfolk Cavaliers) 8.6

The Golden Arm award should go to Jose Matos this year. He will have some competition from Miguel Contreras, who didn't win the triple crown of pitching again, but put together a solid season. In all honesty if Matos doesn't win then the voters should be fired.

**Norfolk Cavaliers on the Leader Board**

Salary Arbitration And Other Stuff

Salary Arbitration And Other Stuff
Bill Parker let me know the he was going to raise the budget once again, and bumped us up to $126,000,000, which is 11th in the league. Once we had the worst budget, but our wining ways has bumped us up to 11th. Not to shabby. At this point in time we have $8,430,000 for Free Agents and $4,430,000 for Extensions. With the arbitration estimates, our payroll is over $104 million, but we have no major players eligible for free agency, outside of Ron Harris.

There are three players eligible for free-agency, Ron Harris, Jose Renteria and Joe Payne who we can offer arbitration too. Jose Renteria is expendable with the emergence of John Phillips and Joe Payne is expendable with the emergence of Cody Johnson. Ron Harris put together a great year for him last year 4-0 5 SV 1.25 ERA in 50.1 IP. I will offer him arbitration, but may try to extend him before he can announce. He is looking for a 4 year/$16 million contract. Not sure a 31 year old "fragile" pitcher is worth that, so it should be some pretty interesting negotiations.

Arbitration Players:
Ron Reilly (SP) - Offer: $3,400,000 (200,000 raise)
Jamie King (RP) - Offer: $2,600,000 (2,110,000 raise)
Ivan Pindea (RP) - Offer: $750,000 (260,000 raise)
Elmer Hawkins (RP-L) - Offer: $950,000 ($100,000 raise)
Jesus Rivera (2B) - Offer: $6,500,000 ($500,000 raise)
Derek Campbell (OF) - Offer: $8,400,000 ($1,525,000 raise)
Cody Johnson (UT) - Offer: $850,000 (100,000 raise)
Jeff Lewis (OF) - Offer: $9,000,000 (3,000,000 raise)

After next season we have two players that will be eligible for free agency, Jose Matos and Roberto Perez, both happen to be our two highest paid players next year. Matos: $14.5, Perez $12.5 and our current esitmated salary for 2019 is $103.0 million.

I could sit back and not do anything for the upcoming season, but I do have some players that I will need to get in the lineup. Mauro Candelaria will be back, and will compete with Mike Ford at 1B or Roberto Perez at 3B. Kent Davis will be back and Javier Janchez has shown he can play everyday. We also have 3 or 4 minor leaguers that will be ready to make the splash next season: Sergio Galvez, Mario Reyes, Francisco Gallegos, Ramon Grandados seem to be on the brink. Pitching wise we are a little thin at the big-leauge ready level, with our two big stars Ramirez and Griffith making names for themselves this season.

My goal this off-season was to target Claude Bond of the Generals and try to move Perez or Campbell in efforts to lock him down, but he is out 4 months with an injury, which means trading for him might be tough. Will Dover have room in 4 months to fit the hefthy contracts of Perez or Campbell? Would they even be willing to listen to deals for them, they are losing their CF this off-season (unless they resign him). Not sure I want to wait that long to solidify my team for next year.

I will sit back about a month of game time, let the awards roll out, let the arbitration hearings happen then reevaluate my team. Right now I am thinking of moving Roberto Perez and Derek Campbell, trying to work out a decent contract with Jose Matos for 3 more years and be done with my off-season. But things my chance as I look over what I have...

Miguel Contreras is signed through 2021 (w/ a vesting option in 2022), next season is 2019... so I am thinking that my run in Norfolk will end in 2021. At this time I will possibly pursue a new team or retire

Glove Wizard Award Winners

Delaware Conference Glove Wizard Award Winners Announced: In baseball circles, a player who has good range, a good arm and good hands is a great catch. Clubs strive to be strong in the field, especially "up the middle." Solid defenders can make a difference in the outcome of tight games and tight pennant races. The Glove Wizard Awards for 2018 in the Delaware Conference go to these standout defenders:

Pitcher: Anthony Dundee (Georgetown Sixteens)
Catcher: Andrew Campbell (Christiana Blue Hens)
First Baseman: Charles Culligan (Lewes Braves)
Second Baseman: Kevin Norris (Milford Clippers) - 2
Third Baseman: Miguel Ortega (Seaford Blue Jays) - 2
Shortstop: Errol Williams (Newark Millers) - 2
Left Fielder: Leslie Bergeron (Milton Brewers)
Center Fielder: Marcos Nieto (New Castle Colonials)
Right Fielder: Peter Peters (New Castle Colonials) - 3

MarVa Conference Announces Best Glovemen for 2018: Making the play is the mark of great defenders. Spearing a liner, diving in the hole or crashing headlong into the wall makes no difference to these awe-inspiring fielders. Magicians they sometimes appear to be, showing up out of nowhere to rob a batter of a hit and to turn a hit into an out. Pitchers love 'em and batters curse 'em. These defensive wizards will collect their 2018 MarVa Conference Glove Wizard Awards tonight:

Pitcher: Larry Everhart (Chesapeake Blue Crabs)
Catcher: Lorenzo Nieto (Richmond Cardinals) - 3
First Baseman: Jorge Sánchez (Ellicott City Express) - 2
Second Baseman: Yasutoki Ine (Salisbury Ports)
Third Baseman: Mike Taylor (Baltimore Barons)
Shortstop: Augusto Rodríguez (Norfolk Cavaliers)
Left Fielder: Matt Fisher (Richmond Cardinals)
Center Fielder: William Russell (Chesapeake Blue Crabs) - 2
Right Fielder: Claudio Cordero (Chesapeake Blue Crabs) - 3

Only one Cavalier made the list this season, and this should be his first of many. Augusto Rodriquez played 1112.0 innings at short and made 9 errors. He posted a .986 field PCT, a 14.3 zone rating and a 1.052 efficiency rating. He won the Gold Glove in A-ball and AAA-ball, so he has always been a top fielder.

I was happy to see Yasutoki Ine make the list. He didn't fit in with our plans, but he had a solid year.

2018 Newcomer Award

Hernández Honored by Delaware Conference as 2018 Best Rookie: Carlos Hernández's age didn't show very often in his first year. He performed more like a veteran on the hill for the Milton Brewers and today he walked away with the 2018 Delaware Conference Newcomer Award.

The 21-year-old starter registered a 19-5 record this season in 29 starts. Over 168.2 innings he gave up 138 hits, struck out 139 and issued 106 walks as he held the opposition to a .224 batting average and fashioned a 2.77 ERA.

Rookie of the Year Crowned in MarVa Conference: Arturo Ramírez was the creme de la creme this year -- the cream of the first-year player crop in the MarVa Conference. Today he was honored with the Newcomer Award for 2018.

Ramírez started 32 games and posted a 21-3 record. The Norfolk starter struck out 155 and walked 64 in 205.1 innings as he compiled a 2.41 ERA.

* Arturo Ramirez becomes the third Cavalier to win the Newcomer of the Year award. Pablo Freitas .261-31-83 won it in 2013 and Tony Soto .299-23-96 won it in 2014 *
