The Cubs lost a close one, 2-1 to St. Louis today, despite
a fine pitching effort from Robert Jones.

Jones gave up just one run over 8 innings, striking out 12.

Martin Madera, the first baseman of the Cards, led off the
ninth with his 6th home run, hit off of Cubs newcomer Viens.

Bubba Jones and Fredric Sims go back a long way, and have
been teammates and good friends for many years.

Over the years, it seems as if Sims has his best games when
Jones pitches, and today was no exception.

A dramatic, clutch, unbelievable grand slam in the bottom of
the eighth were all the runs the Cubs would need, as they
came back to beat the Yankees 4-3.

Sims continues his remarkable play for the year, first in
home runs, runs scored, RBI in the entire league, and second
in batting average.... and first in OPS. The 33 year old Sims
seems a shoo-in for his second MVP award at this point.

Jones won for the 11th time this year, and is on pace to win
more than twenty games.

As for the Cubs, this victory increased their winning percentage
up to .715, and THEY are on pace to win 115 games.

The only run scored was a second inning solo shot off the
bat of Fredric Sims.

Bubba Jones took the loss, his record is now 11-4.

Cubs nemesis Efrain Lovejoy got the victory, evening his
record to 8-8.

defeat the Reds 7-2.

The last game of the first half of the season went well
for the Cubs, as Robert Jones picked up his 12th win, and

News and Notes:

Fredric Sims was named batter of the month for June, hitting
.421, with 11 Homers and 34 RBI.

Congradulations to the following Cubs, having been named to the
recent All-Star game!

P Michael Carney will play in the OOTP-Allstar game!
1B Henry Krebs will play in the OOTP-Allstar game!
2B James Benning will play in the OOTP-Allstar game!
3B Fredric Sims will play in the OOTP-Allstar game!
RF Johnny Vanatta will play in the OOTP-Allstar game!
CF Frank Schlesinger will play in the OOTP-Allstar game!

Starter Robert Jones, despite his 12 wins was not placed onto the
team.

Interestingly, all five hitters were starters for the game, hitting
1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 6th. This is a true measure of the quality
of the team that Manager Clarkson and the Cubs management have put
together.

Halfway through, and it has been quite a year.

The Cubs are hitting .305 as a team, with plenty of power.

Despite all the hitting, they are dead last in walks in the entire league. If they had some guys who drew a walk, I don't know how they would ever lose.

All four starters have at least 10 wins. The bullpen is good, although I have raided it over the years to acquire better hitters.

Bubba's strikeout/innings ratio is the lowest of his career, at 8.2/9IP. I don't mind, and neither does he, as the Cubs score runs early, and often for him. I may dig into the stats and see what his run support is, I am sure it is excellent.

Bubba also has an ERA of 2.90 for the year....very low for him. He will probably fall back into the high 3's before the year is up, but with 18 more starts, I would like him to win 8 of them....and 20 for the year.

Bubba is the #4 starter, and truthfully, the number 5 guy could easily start ahead of him. I twinge a little bit at that, but hey, Bubba has now won 99 games for his career, and is just 30.

If the Cubs continue to be an excellent team, and there is no reason not to.....look for probably another 6-8 seasons of 15-20 wins for Bubba. Maybe 200+ wins for his career?

For Bubba to have ANY chance at the HOF, he need to pitch a long, long time, and get some longevity type records....complete games, IP, strikeouts, that sort of thing.

Bubba is 22nd amongst active pitchers in strikeouts, and complete games.

Bubba will be 36 years old on December 7th, 1941.

It took the country a couple of years to mobilize.

This is an outrage!!! Bubba should have been an allstar. If I remember correctly, he is off to his best start ever, and he was an allstar atleast one other time. Fans just can't handle the allstar vote

Funny thing, I forgot it was my anniversary today, but I remember, or atleast think I remember this is Bubba's finest year.

Dear Mom and Daddy,

Hey ho, whaddya know? Ella Mae and the kids are fine.

Millie and Fredric are in the "terrible twos" now, getting into everything, and tearin' stuff up.

We got us a dog now. There is plenty of room out back for Duke to run. That's his name, Duke. He is an Alsation, from Germany.

We were on the road a week or two back, and there was a prowler....it shook up Ella Mae pretty good, so now Duke gets to be the guard dog. He really loves the kids, and if you make a sudden move at them, he gets pretty scary. Boy can he put away the food!

I wanted to name him King, or Rover, but Ella Mae saw a movie with Teresa Clarkson, a western, with this young feller John Wayne as one of the actors. His nick name is Duke, and it kind of stuck.

As you probably know, I wasn't picked for the All Star game. I'm kinda dissapointed, as I have won twelve games so far, and we are only at the halfway point in the season.

I will show them what I can do.

Daddy, we have a terrific team, and we will win well over a hundred games this year. I am still the number #4 starter, but Sandy says I could be the 2 or 3 guy for just about any other team in the Majors.

Fredric Sims is having some kind of year...we kid him, on account that this is his last year on his contract. The players call it a "salary drive." He is leading the league in just about everything.

The house is coming along right smartly. Ella Mae has the raised flower beds all done up in the back, and Henry knows a thing or two about brickwork, as his dad is in the trades back in New York. So Henry and I built a low wall around the side, and a brick kiln for Ella Mae's ceramics. She does some real nice pieces, and is really getting good at raku firing. The sawdust she uses gives a real nice copper patina to the clay. The low-firing temperatures mean she can't do porcelain or china, but the clay sure does turn out nice. She has been giving the things she makes away, but pretty soon I think I will ask her to consider putting things onto consignment.

I have to go back down to St. Louis at the end of the month for 3 days, to do some refresher training for my squadron. Flying may be the only thing I enjoy doing more than throwing a baseball,

just 4 losses.

the Cubs needed, as they crush the Miami Hurricane 8-0.

It was the second shutout of the year for Robert Jones,
who gave up just 2 singles, and one walk.

Jones now is tied for the league lead in wins, at 14.

James Benning went deep twice, and Henry Krebs once for
the Cubs.

Kenry Krebs had another big day, helping the Cubs to a
7-5 victory over New York.

Krebs had 2 doubles and 2 home runs, raising his average
to .337

Starter Robert Jones was a little shaky at times, but became
the league's first 15 game winner.

Lewellen also gained his league leading 15th save.

Another 11 runs for the Cubs, another victory
for Robert Jones.

The Cubs continue to dominate, winning their sixth
game in a row, as they defeat the Bisons 11-4.

Starter Robert Jones ran his record to a sparkling
16-5 with the win.

Henry Krebs got three hits, and another 5 RBI. Krebs is
rapidly moving up the leader boards in RBI, and currently
has 87.

Said Manager Clarkson after the game---"They made a
mistake when they didn't put Bubba on the All Star
team. He is a tough competitor, but now he has a little
extra in him. I don't mind this even a little, as it
helps the Cubs."

a mood to hit."

That was Robert Jones talking, after an 8-3 shellacking
of Cincinatti. Jones won his 17th, tops in the Majors, and
struck out a season's high 13 batters.

Krebs got another couple of hits, raising his average to
.353, and increasing his hitting streak to 22 games.

The only run scored was a second inning solo shot off the bat of Fredric Sims. Bubba Jones took the loss, his record is now 11-4. dsvitak Hall Of Famer Join Date: Dec 2002 Posts: 5,450	Editors Notes Halfway through, and it has been quite a year. The Cubs are hitting .305 as a team, with plenty of power. Despite all the hitting, they are dead last in walks in the entire league. If they had some guys who drew a walk, I don't know how they would ever lose. All four starters have at least 10 wins. The bullpen is good, although I have raided it over the years to acquire better hitters. Bubba's strikeout/innings ratio is the lowest of his career, at 8.2/9IP. I don't mind, and neither does he, as the Cubs score runs early, and often for him. I may dig into the stats and see what his run support is, I am sure it is excellent. Bubba also has an ERA of 2.90 for the year....very low for him. He will probably fall back into the high 3's before the year is up, but with 18 more starts, I would like him to win 8 of them....and 20 for the year. Bubba is the #4 starter, and truthfully, the number 5 guy could easily start ahead of him. I twinge a little bit at that, but hey, Bubba has now won 99 games for his career, and is just 30. If the Cubs continue to be an excellent team, and there is no reason not to.....look for probably another 6-8 seasons of 15-20 wins for Bubba. Maybe 200+ wins for his career? For Bubba to have ANY chance at the HOF, he need to pitch a long, long time, and get some longevity type records....complete games, IP, strikeouts, that sort of thing. Bubba is 22nd amongst active pitchers in strikeouts, and complete games.

Congradulations to the following Cubs, having been named to the recent All-Star game! P Michael Carney will play in the OOTP-Allstar game! 1B Henry Krebs will play in the OOTP-Allstar game! 2B James Benning will play in the OOTP-Allstar game! 3B Fredric Sims will play in the OOTP-Allstar game! RF Johnny Vanatta will play in the OOTP-Allstar game! CF Frank Schlesinger will play in the OOTP-Allstar game! Starter Robert Jones, despite his 12 wins was not placed onto the team. Interestingly, all five hitters were starters for the game, hitting 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 6th. This is a true measure of the quality of the team that Manager Clarkson and the Cubs management have put together. Keep it up! And GO CUBS!

If I remember correctly, he is off to his best start ever, and he was an allstar atleast one other time. Fans just can't handle the allstar vote Funny thing, I forgot it was my anniversary today, but I remember, or atleast think I remember this is Bubba's finest year. Oops

Millie and Fredric are in the "terrible twos" now, getting into everything, and tearin' stuff up. We got us a dog now. There is plenty of room out back for Duke to run. That's his name, Duke. He is an Alsation, from Germany. We were on the road a week or two back, and there was a prowler....it shook up Ella Mae pretty good, so now Duke gets to be the guard dog. He really loves the kids, and if you make a sudden move at them, he gets pretty scary. Boy can he put away the food! I wanted to name him King, or Rover, but Ella Mae saw a movie with Teresa Clarkson, a western, with this young feller John Wayne as one of the actors. His nick name is Duke, and it kind of stuck. As you probably know, I wasn't picked for the All Star game. I'm kinda dissapointed, as I have won twelve games so far, and we are only at the halfway point in the season. I will show them what I can do. Daddy, we have a terrific team, and we will win well over a hundred games this year. I am still the number #4 starter, but Sandy says I could be the 2 or 3 guy for just about any other team in the Majors. Fredric Sims is having some kind of year...we kid him, on account that this is his last year on his contract. The players call it a "salary drive." He is leading the league in just about everything. The house is coming along right smartly. Ella Mae has the raised flower beds all done up in the back, and Henry knows a thing or two about brickwork, as his dad is in the trades back in New York. So Henry and I built a low wall around the side, and a brick kiln for Ella Mae's ceramics. She does some real nice pieces, and is really getting good at raku firing. The sawdust she uses gives a real nice copper patina to the clay. The low-firing temperatures mean she can't do porcelain or china, but the clay sure does turn out nice. She has been giving the things she makes away, but pretty soon I think I will ask her to consider putting things onto consignment. I have to go back down to St. Louis at the end of the month for 3 days, to do some refresher training for my squadron. Flying may be the only thing I enjoy doing more than throwing a baseball, Well, that's all for now, gotta put the kids down. Take care, Bubba
