Mexico - Lightweights - Semi-Finals & Final
Semi-Finals:
Jose Luis Castillo vs Mario Trigo - Castillo dominated Trigo from the opening bell. When Trigo would stand in and fight, scoring points well, it only made Castillo step it up a notch, wearing Trigo down with the volume of punches until the 8th when Trigo went down 2 times and was bloodied before the fight was stopped near the end of the 8th round for the TKO by Castillo. Juan Diaz vs Arturo Lomeli - Tight battle that saw Lomeli give the young Diaz fits at times. In the end it was the cleverness of Lomeli in my eyes and the eyes of Mark Somogyi (7-6 & 7-5 repsectively) that made the difference. The judges agreed, scoring it 7-5, 7-5 & 8-4 for Lomeli who moves to the finals against Castillo. Final: Jose Luis Castillo vs Arturo Lomeli - Castillo's punches started swelling around both of Lomeli's eyes in the 1st round and it was all down hill from there as he battered his man unmercifully until a cut above the eyebrow became a gash in the 7th to send Castillo to the World Tournament with a 7 TKO win! |

Mexico - Jr. Lightweights - Round 1
Top seeded Julio Cesar Chavez recieves the bye in this 15 fighter tournament.
Round 1: Marco Antonio Barrera vs Jorge Monzon - Barrera scores knockdowns in the 1st, 2nd and 4th enroute to a 4th round TKO win. Jesus Chavez vs Enrique Jupiter - Dominant performance by Chavez who pounds Jupiter into submission in the 4th for the TKO. Rafael Limon vs Aaron Zarate - Limon was able to rain punches down on Zarate to such an extent in the 5th that the referee ended things before Zarate was seriously hurt for the TKO. Ricardo Arredondo vs Emmanuel Lucero - Good action bout saw Arredondo down once but taking his share of the rounds. In the end it was Lucero's aggression that made the difference in my eyes as I scored it 8-7 for him. Rocco Del Sesto, my partner in crime saw it as a draw at 7-7. With such a close fight we all waited with baited breath for the score cards. The judges finally turned them in, scoring the bout 8-6 Lucero, 7-6 Arredondo and 9-5 Lucero for the first upset of the tourney! Arnulfo Castillo vs Juan Jose Arias - In a case of terrible officiating Castillo recieved a point deduction for his first infraction and was DQ'd in the 3rd round on his second infractin to hand Arias the gift victory. Joge Paez vs Mario Martinez - These 2 battled from pillar to post but Paez was by far the stronger, taking the lion's share of the rounds and sealing the deal with knockdowns in each of the final 3 rounds. I had it 12-3 Paez while Mirco Mizera had it 11-4 Paez. The judges scores were as follows: 12-3, 12-2, 11-4 all for Paez. Tomas Rojas vs Silverio Ortiz - An accidental head but put a premature end to this slugfest that saw Rojas forge a lead that Ortiz was in the process of cutting into after a knockdown in the 6th round. The cut reopened in the 7th to end the fight, and I had it 4-1 Rojas while Don Koss had it 4-2 Rojas. The judges scored it 4-1, 3-2, 4-2 for Rojas. |

Mexico - Jr. Lightweights - Quarter-Finals
Quarter-Finals:
Julio Cesar Chavez vs Emmanuel Lucero - Lucero fought an amazing fight against the off the board favored Chavez! He used the entire ring and countered effectively, and scoring a knockdown against Chavez! Chavez scored 5 knockdowns however, and they took their toll as Lucero faded in the final 3 rounds and was knocked down 2 times in the 14th round which ended in a TKO win for Chavez. The crowd gave both men a standing ovation as they hugged in the center of the ring of this amazing fight! I had it 7-5 Chavez through 13 and Shane Macleod had it 6-5 Chavez. The judges scored it 8-4, 7-5, 8-4 for Chavez, but most observers felt it was closer than that. Marco Antonio Barrera vs Juan Jose Arias - Barrera was dominating when Arias suddenly scored a knockdown in the 8th round! Barrera got up from it, survived the round then came out in the 9th and scored one of his own enroute to a 9th round TKO win! I had it 6-2 Barrera while Andreas Raht had it 5-3. The official cards were 5-3, 6-2, 4-4 for Barrera. Jesus Chavez vs Jorge Paez - This was an all out brawl between 2 solid sluggers Paez stayed in the fight despite going down 3 times as he mounted furious comebacks in the rounds following them! In the end I had Chavez ahead 8-7 while Roy Paeth had it 8-6 for Chavez. The judges score cards were all 8-7 for Chavez., who held off a furious attack in round 15 to win the decision. Rafael Limon vs Tomas Rojas - Limon got off to a slow start, then had a cut open in the 4th round on the inside of the left eyebrow. It reopened in the 5th and the fight was stopped, handing Rojas the 5th round TKO on cuts. |

Mexico - Jr. Lightweights - Semi-Finals & Final
Semi-Finals:
Julio Cesar Chavez vs Tomas Rojas - Chavez used pure pressure to dominate the game Rojas. In the 6th Chavez cornered his man and pounded on him so badly that the referee stepped in to protect the obviously defenseless Rojas. I had it 5-0 as did Jason Wood. The judges saw it 4-1, 5-0, 5-0 for Chavez. Marco Antonio Barrera vs Jesus Chavez - Brutal back and forth battle between Barrera and Chavez! Barrera went down in the 12th but came back to take the final 3 rounds to win the fight in my eyes 9-6. Javier Flores had it 8-6 Barrera. The judges scored it 8-7, 10-5 and 8-7 for Jesus Chavez! The fans and Barrera's cornermen were incensed at this inexplicable decision! Final: Julio Cesar Chavez vs Jesus Chavez - Julio Cesar Chavez battered Jesus Chavez for 7 rounds before scoring a pair of knockdowns in the 8th to earn the TKO win! I had it 7-0 Julio Cesar Chavez while Markus Heinsohn had it 5-1 for Julio Cesar Chavez. The judges score cards reflected the lopsided fight with scores of 6-0, 6-0, 5-1. Julio Cesar Chavez is expected to go far in the World Tournament as he's one of the greatest of all time at this weight class! |

Mexico - Featherweights - Fight-Ins
There are 34 entrants in the Featherweight Tournament. There will be 2 fight-in bouts to set the field at 32.
Fight-Ins: Marcos Badillo vs Oscar Galindo - What was a close battle that went back and forth turned into a solid win for Galindo when Badillo faded in the final 5 rounds. I had it 8-6 for Badillo while Tom Trunzo had it 9-5. The judges scored it 8-6, 6-5 and 8-6 for Galindo however! The fans threw burritos, tacos and any other food stuffs they could find into the ring in protest! Jorge Munoz vs Rosalio Muro - Munoz survived a 5th round knockdown to come roaring back and score 3 of his own to win in dominating fashion. I had it 11-3 while Dan Cuoco had it 11-4 for Munoz. The judges scored it 11-3, 8-6, 9-5 for Munoz who makes it to the field of 32. |

Palomino
Hey, Infinity
I am following this replay with alot of interest. Curious as to why you decided to have Palomino fight for Mexico, in my Uni he's listed as US Nationality. (Too bad for Cuevas, perhaps he would have made the team at WW without Palomino there.) |

Mexico - Featherweights - Round 1
Round 1:
Salvador Sanchez vs Oscar Galindo - Galindo was game in getting up from 6 knockdowns, including 2 in the 12th and 2 more in the fatal 13th when the damage was so bad the referee ended it for the TKO. Both Lee A. Crooks and myself had it 10-1 for Sanchez through 12. The judges scorecards were 10-1, 10-1, 11-1. Juan Manuel Marquez vs Jorge Munoz - The good news for Munoz was he didn't go down, the bad news was his inability to defend himself resulted in a 2nd round TKO for Marquez! Vicente Saldivar vs Sergio Sanchez - Saldivar scored the KO with no time left in the 2nd round against the hapless Sanchez. Baby Arizmendi vs Ray Ramon Alva - Alva was suprisingly effective at times in this slow starting fight that turned into an entertaining bout in the latter half. Both men clashed heads by mistake in the 12th which opened a gash over the left eyebrow of Arizmendi that ended the fight prematurely in the 14th. The scorecards went to the judges (Both Mike Hanson and myself had it 9-3 Arizmendi) who scored the fight 9-2, 8-3, 8-4 for Arizmendi. Alejandro Gonzalez vs Cesar Figueroa - Gonzalez scored a knockdown in the 2nd and 2 in the 8th enroute to the 8th round KO win. Cristobal Cruz vs David Murillo - Cruze was wining in dominating fashion when a cut over his right eye reopened in the 10th to end the fight, handing Murillo the upset TKO win. Aurelio Herrera vs Paulino Villalobos - Herrera came in a decided favorite but left a beaten man when he was cut badly on his left eyelid, then had it reopen several times until the 9th when the fight was ended. Both Jason Wood and myself had it 4-4 through the first 8 rounds. The judges had it 5-3, 4-4, 5-3 for Herrera through 8. Manuel Medina vs Edgar Barcenas - Medina glided around the ring picking off the punches of Barcenas while counter punching and using his jab to good effect, nearly closing both eyes in this 15 round bout. I had it 15-0 for Medina while Jason Wood was more generous scoring it 12-3 Medina. The judges scored it 13-2, 15-0, 15-0 for Medina. Ricardo Moreno vs Felix Cervantes - Moreno scored a knockdown in the 3rd and battered Cervantes opening a cut in the 4th, reopened it in the 5th when the fight was stopped for the TKO on cuts for Moreno. Jorge Solis vs Raymundo Beltran - Solis was the stronger fighter in this one as he put Beltran down in the 5th round. It went the distance however and went to the judges. Mark Somogyi scord it 9-4 for Solis while I had it 8-6 Solis. The judges scored it 8-4, 8-5, 8-5 all for Solis. Marcos Villasana vs Raul Cruz - Cruz survived a 1st round knockdown that nearly had him out to turn this fight into a brawl that saw Villasana get cut in the 5th, then have the cut reopen in the 9th round to end the fight for the upset TKO by Cruz. Orlando Salido vs Martin Honorio - Back and forth brawl that saw both men down 2 times before Honorio finished things with 2 more knockdowns, the final one for the KO in the 12th round! Both Romy Alvarez and I had Salido up 6-5 in this tough fight. The judges had it 6-5 on all 3 cards. Humberto Soto vs Marcos Licona - Back and forth snooze fest that was mercifully cut short by a cut over the right eyebrow of Soto in the 8th round for the Lincona TKO win. Guty Espadas Jr. vs Hector Marquez - Espadas Jr. got off to a slow start but Marquez threw it all away with an obviously intentional low blow in the 5th for the Espadas Jr. win by DQ in the 5th. Luis Fuente vs Cesar Soto - Fuente suffered a cut early in round 7 that looked like it could have an effect on the outcome of the fight, but Fuente took the matter out of the hands of the referee later in the round with a beautiful uppercut that flattened Soto for the count! Clemente Sanchez vs Hector Velazquez - Sanchez and Velazquez were both throwing heavy leather, but Sanchez was getting the better of it until he was cut in the 6th and had the cut reopen in the 7th, 8th and again in the final frame the 9th for the Velazquez TKO on cuts.

Mexico - Featherweights - Round 2
Round 2:
Salvador Sanchez vs David Murillo - Sanchez came out and wasted little time, scoring a pair of knockdowns in the 1st round enroute to a 1 TKO when the referee deemed Murillo unfit to continue after the 2nd knockdown. Juan Manuel Marquez vs Paulino Villalobos - Dominating performance by JMM who showed off his boxing skills against Villalobos, using the ring well throughout and counterpunching at will. Villalobos had his moments, but couldn't withstand the onslaught in the end as he went down in the 11th then the referee ended the bout at the behest of the ring doctor due to the bad swelling around the left eye of Villalobos in the 12th for the TKO. Vicente Saldivar vs Raul Cruz - Saldivar was willing to take the best Cruz had to offer in order to wear him down, and it paid off as he scored a knockdown in the 6th, then the KO in the 7th round. Baby Arizmendi vs Martin Honorio - Textbook boxing performance by Arizmendi who circled, darted in tossing combinations then darting out, moving side to side and simply boxing Honorio's ears off. I had it 15-0 Arizmendi while Shane Macleod had it 13-2 Arizmendi. The judges scored it 15-0, 15-0, 13-1 Arizmendi. Alejandro Gonzalez vs Marcos Licona - Licona boxed well for the first 8 rounds but faded as Gonzalez asserted himself cutting and brusing Licona in the latter half of the fight. After knockdowns in the 13th, then the 15th, the cut reopened half way through the final round to force the fight to stop for the Gonzalez TKO. Don Koss had it 9-5 Gonzalez and i had it 10-4 through 14. The officials had it 11-2, 10-4 and 9-3 Gonzalez. Manuel Medina vs Guty Espadas Jr. - Espadas Jr. Scored a pair of knockdowns in the 5th, but Medina showed signs of taking over the fight, scoring a knockdown of his own before breaking his right hand and having to retire with 26 seconds left in the 6th. Espadas Jr. recieves the TKO win. Ricardo Moreno vs Luis Fuente - All out brawl, but Moreno won the lions share of the rounds, nearly closing Fuente's right eye. In the 11th he pounded the game Fuente unmercifully until the referee ended things when Moreno beckoned the referee to sto the fight rather than let his opponent take more damage for the 11 TKO. Jorge Solis vs Hector Velazquez - Solis came in the solid favorite, but never really got untracked, as Velazquez dominated this brawl, scoring 2 knockdowns in the 11th enroute to the 11th round TKO win. |

Mexico - Featherweights - Quarter-Finals
Quarter-Finals:
Salvador Sanchez vs Guty Espadas Jr. - Relentless pressure against a pressure fighter won the day for Sanchez who scored 3 knockdowns enroute to a 10th round TKO. Juan Manuel Marquez vs Hector Velazquez - 3 knockdowns, all off of counter punching hooks lead to the 10th round decimation of Velazquez. Vicente Saldivar vs Ricardo Moreno - The first 2 rounds were a pure brawl but Moreno walked into a hook early in the 3rd round that dropped him for the 1st knockdown, then later in the round an uppercut finished him with 1:36 left in the round for the KO win by Saldivar. Baby Arizmendi vs Alejandro Gonzalez - Arizmendi controlled the pace of the fight throughout with solid movement and fast hands. He had one problem in the 12th when he was dropped for a 9 count but he reopened an early cut over Gonzalez's left eye in the 13th round for the TKO win. I had him up 7-4 and Roy Paeth had it 8-3. The judges scored it 7-4, 8-4, 6-5 for Arizmendi through 12. |

Mexico - Featherweights - Semi-Finals & Final
Semi-Finals:
Salvador Sanchez Vs Baby Arizmendi - Sanchez came out boxing against Arizmendi despite 11 knockdowns in his previous 3 fights, and it allowed Arizmendi to take the fight to the distance, which played right into the hands of Arizmendi. He used the ring better overall, and it appeared had the better jab as he nearly closed the right eye of Sanchez. I had it 9-6 Arizmendi for the upset while Markus Heinsohn agreed 8-6. Though a tactical fight at times, it was quite exciting with heated exchanges throughout. The judges scored the bout 10-5 Arizmendi, 8-7 Sanchez and 8-7 Sanchez for the narrow and somewhat shocking split decision! The Compu-Box stats on this one were interesting as Arizmendi landed 568 of 1258 (45.2%) compared to 275 of 963 (28.6%) for Sanchez who handed the heavier leather. Juan Manuel Marquez vs Vicente Saldivar - A shockingly dominant performance for Saldivar who scores the lone knockdown late in the 14th round enrote to a solid 15th round UD Both Mirco Mizera and I had it 14-1 Saldivar despite Marquez having some great moments trying to fight back against the onslaught. The judges scored it 14-1, 14-1, 10-5 for Saldivar who meets Sanchez in the Finale. Final: Salvador Sanchez vs Vicente Saldivar - After his last performance, everyone was wondering which Sanchez would show up? The one that scored 11 knockdowns while destroying 3 opponents, or the one that was given a gift split decision in his prior bout. It took all of 30 seconds for us to find out that the bomb throwing Sanchez was in the house as he scored his first knockdown just that fast! He scored another in the 2nd to prove his point then continued to dominate a game but outgunne Saldivar until he scored the KO blow late in the 9th round. With 4 more knockdowns in this fight, Sanchez is now 5-0-0 (4) with an astounding 15 knockdowns in that time. Sanchez will be considered a top threat in the World Tournament. |

Mexico - Jr. Featherweights - Round 1
With 24 fighters in the Jr. Featherweight division the top 8 seeds will recieve a bye. They are Erik Morales, Oscar Larios, Israel Vazquez, Daniel Ponce-DeLeon, Juan Estrada, Nestor Garza, Juan Meza and Antonio Escalante.
Round 1: Gerardo Espinoza vs Carlos Contreras - For fans of brutality in the sweet science, this was a dream fight as both men tore into one another with an unbridled ferocity! Espinosa scored a knockdown in the 2nd, and was dominating the 4th when Contreras scored his knockdown to steal a round he was well behind on (was 21-14 Espinoza despite the knockdown). Finally in the 13th, Espinoza scored the deciding blow, a wicked uppercut that put Contreras down for the count! Things were dead even on 2 cards and 7-5 Espinoza on the 3rd while I had it 6-6 and Ian Lord had it 6-5 Contreras. Jorge Lacierva vs Alejandro Estrada - Estrada dominated throughout, doing even more damage in rounds where Lacierva showed signs of trying to mount a comback until in the 9th round Estrada was floored by a combination for the count of 10. Estrada's right eye was near closed at the time of the stop as well. Enrique Sanchez vs Adrian Valdez - A solid performance by Sanchez despite Valdez running throughout most of the fight. He finally cornered Valdez in the 11th and landed a stunning uppercut that floored his man for the count. Daniel Zaragoza vs Sammy Ventura - Back and forth slugfest that saw Zaragoza down in the 3rd and Ventura down in the 10th and 2 times in the 13th. I had it 10-5 Zaragoza while Ian Lord had it 8-6 Zaragoza. The judges had it 10-5, 9-4, 11-4 for Zaragoza who moves to the 2nd round. Armando Guerrero vs Hugo Dianzo - Neither man impressed, but Guerrero did enough to pull out the 9-5, 9-6, 9-6 decision. I had it 9-6 while Rocco Del Sesto had it 8-7 for Guerrero. Roberto Leyva vs Ricardo Medina - Medina circled and popped his jab in sporadic fashion while Medina patiently stalked him until landing the big hook in the 8th for the first of 2 knockdowns in the round. The referee saw enough after the 2nd round and called it for the TKO for Leyva! Juan Antonio Lopez vs Arturo Valenzuela - This was a battle between 2 sluggers, and Valenzuela landed the first huge punch at the end of the 4th round that sent Lopez reeling into the ropes as the bell rang. Valenzuela, sensing his man was still hurt poured it on in the 5th round until the referee stepped in with 53 seconds remaining to stop the bout to hand us our first mild upset of the Jr. Featherweight Tourney. Abner Mares vs Edel Ruiz - Ruiz dominated from the opening bell scoring the lone knockdown in the 7th round before opening a huge gash on the right eyelid of Mares in the 9th for the TKO on cuts. |

Mexico - Jr. Featherweights -Round 2
Round 2:
Erik Morales vs Arturo Valenzuela - Morales dominated Valenzuela, opening a cut in the 3rd round then reopening it in the 5th for the TKO win. Oscar Larios vs Armando Guerrero - A cut and swelling in the 2nd round over the right eye over Guerrero didn't bode well as Larios took the first few rounds in lackluster fashion then came on like gangbusters in the 4th round, scoring at will then opening the cut to force the stoppage bye TKO on cuts. Israel Vazquez vs Roberto Leyva - Vasquez came out and simply punished Leyva in the 1st round but wasn't able to seal the deal. Leyva came back and returned the favor in the 2nd round, then scored knockdowns in the 3rd and again in the 4th before the referee ended the fight for the upset TKO! Daniel Ponce-DeLeon vs Edel Ruiz - Ponce-DeLeon dominated throughout, scoring a pair of knockdowns and taking every round on my card when he walked into a hook from Ruiz that starched him in the 8th for the come from behind upset KO win! Juan Estrada vs Enrique Sanchez - Sanchez came out and scored a knockdown in the first 10 seconds of the 1st round and dominated from that point forward, until finally closing the right eye of Sanchez forcing the TKO stoppage in the 7th round. Javier Aguirre Flores had it 5-1 while I had it a shutout 6-0 for Sanchez through 6. The judges had it 5-1, 6-0, 6-0 in a fight that was never in doubt. Nestor Garza vs Daniel Zaragoza - A brutal fight that saw Garza stalking, scoring 2 knockdowns in the 2nd round with Zaragoza losing a round due to a low blow in the 3rd round. Garza continued to pound away taking the lead then in the 11th Garza scored the first of 2 knockdowns to turn the tide, taking the final 5 rounds in my eyes to win 8-6. Mark L. Elwood agreed with his own 8-6 tally. The judges cards were 8-6 Zaragoza, 7-7 even and 8-6 Zaragoza for the Majority Decision. Juan Meza vs Gerardo Espinoza - Espinoza and Meza stayed in the center of the ring throughout this slugfest! Espinoza was by far the stronger, scoring 5 knockdowns despite a bad cut over the right eye that nearly ended it in the 7th round. His corner did a great job of closing it however, and Espinoza scored the final 3 knockdowns of the fight in the 11th round then punished Meza unmercifully until the referee ended it for the 11th round TKO win by Espinoza! Antonio Escalante vs Jorge Lacierva - Escalante just coouldn't keep Lacierva off him in this one, despite showing good boxing skills at times. Lacierva stalked him with distain, until scoring a knockdown in the 7th then opening a nasty cut half way through the round that ended the fight for the TKO on cuts. |

Mexico - Jr. Featherweights - Quarter-Finals
Quarter-Finals:
Erik Morales vs Roberto Leyva - Shocking fight that saw Morales down 2 times in the 9th round as Leyva made a fight of it despite Morales taking more rounds overall. Finally Morales took total control in the 15th and final round, pounding on Leyva with a variety of punches that had the crowd yelling for the referee to end the fight, which he did with 27 seconds remaining to seal the 15th round TKO for Morales. I had it 8-5 Morales through 14 rounds and Mirco Mizera had it 7-3 Morales. The judges had it 8-2, 9-4, 8-5 at the time of the stoppage. Oscar Larios vs Edel Ruiz - Larios scored the lone knockdown in the 7th round of this dominating performance. He took every round but the 9th, then in the 10th came out and sealed the deal, pounding Ruiz throughout the round until things were ended iwith 11 seconds left in round 10 for the TKO. Gerardo Espinoza vs Jorge Lacierva - After splitting 2 exciting rounds at ring center, Espinoza comes out and fires off a powerful combination that floors Lacierva for the count of 10 in the 3rd. Enrique Sanchez vs Daniel Zaragoza - A low scoring affair that was very difficult to score as Zaragoza boxed well, working hard at keeping Sanchez at bay. Sanchez scored well in some rounds, but most were toss up rounds. I had it 7-5 for Sanchez while Jason Wood had it 7-4 for Zaragoza. The judges scored the bout 8-6 Sanchez, 6-5 Zaragoza and 7-5 For the winner by split decision Enrique Sanchez. |

Mexico - Jr. Featherweights - Semi-Finals & Final
Semi-Finals:
Erik Morales vs Gerardo Espinoza - A brawl for the 3 rounds though Morales was winning in dominating fashion. He took over in the 4th using the ring as his canvas painting Espinoza with an array of punches that kept him off balance throughout the rest of the fight. Morales scored a knockdown in the 7th then continued to dominate in the 8th to the point that Espinoza was obviously a beaten man when the referee ended things to stop the carnage for the TKO by Morales. Oscar Larios vs Enrique Sanchez - This was a back and forth slugfest with Larios showing more dominance overall, scoring a pair of knockdowns and nearly closing the left eye of the favored Larios. Despite the knockdowns and the eye, Larios forged a lead only to have Sanchez take 4 of the final 6 rounds on both my and Richard Plunkett's cards to take the fight 8-7. The judges saw it 9-6, 9-4, 9-5 for the upset decision by Sanchez. Final: Erik Morales vs Enrique Sanchez - Sanchez tried to make a brawl of it, going after Morales with a vengance. Morales scored a knockdown in the 6th round then was so dominant in the 7th round that the referee ended the bout to send Morales to the World Tournament with an impressive 7th round TKO. Both Tom Trunzo and I had it 4-1 Morales as did all 3 judges. Morales connected on an impressive 55.5% of his punches in the bout. |

Mexico - Bantamweights - Fight-Ins
Fight-Ins:
With 44 fighters, we will have 12 fight-in bouts to set the field at 32. Efrain Pintor vs Alex Becerra - Becerra showed suprising heart, getting up from 4 knockdowns before the 5th took him out in the 12th round. He kept the fight close however, being behind 6-4 on both my card and Tom Trunzo's. The judges had it 6-4, 6-3 and 7-3 for Pintor. Victor Rabanales vs Armando Diaz - After splitting the first 4 rounds, Rabanales took over winning each round. In the 7th he scored the first knockdown, then near the end of the 8th he scored the 2nd one for the 10 count! Roberto Rubaldino vs Oswaldo Guerrero - A dominating performance by Rubaldino despite a bad gash on the inside of his left eyebrow due to an accidental butt. He opened a cut with a wicked hook over the right eye of Guerrero that forced the fight to stop in the 7th round as a TKO on cuts. I had it 6-0 Rubaldino while Rocco Del Sesto had it 5-1. The judges had it 5-1, 3-3 (?) and 6-0. Heriberto Ruiz vs Ricardo Martinez - Ruiz dominated in this abbreviated bout battering Martinez in the 1st round opening a nasty gash on the bridge of his nose. He continued to target the cut, reopening it again in the 2nd and finally in the 3rd for the TKO on cuts. Julio Zarate vs Jose Sarabia - Zarate was in complete control, despite a cut over his right eye that nearly ended the fight in the 3rd round. It was a cut on the hairline of Sarabia that ended the fight in the 5th for the TKO. Both Markus Heinsohn and I had it 3-1 for Zarate through 4 rounds. All 3 judges had it 3-1 as well. Cuauhtemoc Gomez vs Miguel Martinez - Martinez went down in the 2nd and 4th, and never truely recovered as Gomez decimated him in the 5th round before the referee ended the bout for the safety of Martinez with 56 seconds remaining in the 5th. Kid Irapuato vs Francisco Mateos - Irapuato did a good job of keeping Mateos off balance forging a lead when in the 14th round he scored a knockdown early on then with 1:04 seconds left Mateos opened a cut over Irapuato's eye that didn't look all that bad, yet the doctor inexplicitly ordered the fight halted handing Mateos the unearned and unfair 14th round TKO win! I had it 8-5 Irapuato while Shane Macleod had it 10-3. German Ohm vs Francisco Paredes - Ohm dominated, scoring 4 knockdowns and taking a 7-1 lead on my card and 6-2 on Shane Macleod's with constant pressure. It cost him however as both of his eyes were badly swollen and a nasty cut on the bridge of his nose just wouldn't stay closed, forcing the upset TKO in the 11th round! The judges had it 6-2, 6-3 and 5-4 through 11. Ricardo Vargas vs Jorge Salazar - Tough bout to score as neither man put out a stellar effort in this one. It didn't matter however as Vargas, after barly surviving a 9 count knockdown in the 1st round opened a cut later in the round that was a continuing problem for Salazar until finally it burst open in a shower of blood forcing the TKO stopage in the 7th. Rafael Herrera vs Eloy Sanchez - Classic Boxer-Puncher bout that saw Herrera take a commanding lead through the 11th round only to have it all go up in ashes when a cut on the hairline reopened to force the 12th round TKO win for Sanchez. Both Don Koss and I had it 8-3 for Herrera as his boxing was far more effective than the slugging Sanchez. All 3 judges were in agreement at 8-3 as well. Rodolfo Martinez vs Manuel Sarabia - Dominating performance by Martinez despite some stellar work by Sarabia (Round 9 was a round of the year caliber round.) Both men worked inside with abandon and both men sported shiners on their right orbs. Both Ian Lord and I were in agreement that Martinez dominated 13-2 for the decision. The judges had it 13-2, 10-5, 12-3 for Martinez. Chucho Castillo vs Carlos Madrigal - Entertaining slugfest that went back and forth through the first 4 rounds until Madrigal caught Castillo coming in with a sweet uppercut to lay him out like a Christmas goose for the 10 count! |

Mexico - Bantamweights - Round 1
Round 1:
Carlos Zarate vs Francisco Mateos - Francisco Mateos showed incredible heart, taking a beating but getting up after each of 7 knockdowns before the referee ended the bout to protect him from further damage. Zarate was simply too strong, too fast and too much in control throughout. I had it 11-1 Zarate and Andreas Raht had it 9-3. The judges had it 11-1, 9-1 and 11-1. Ruben Olivares vs Francisco Paredes - Dominant performance by the #2 seed Olivares saw him score 3 knockdowns in the 4th round before the referee finally determined it was unsafe for Paredes to continue for the TKO win. Jose Becerra vs Eloy Sanchez - After a terrific round by Sanchez that had Becerra's corner screaming at him for his not following the game plan, Becerra came out and battered Sanchez for the entire 2 minutes and 9 seconds that the referee allowed round 3 to go. He finally had no choice but to step in as Sanchez was sagging in the corner out on his feet and totally defenseless. Rafael Marquez vs Carlos Madrigal - Madrigal brashly came in predicting a KO win over the touted Marquez. He came out battling making it an interesting slugfest but couldn't stay on his feet, going down 3 times, the final 2 in the fatal 7th round that saw him get up but get pounded until the referee stepped in to stop the one sided beating. Jose Medel vs Rodolfo Martinez - A suprisingly close slugfest that went back and forth for the first 5 rounds until Medel asserted himself with punches from every angle that took the sails out of Martinez. With 34 seconds remaining in the 6th round, the referee stepped in and ended the bout much to the chagrin of the corner of Martinez for the TKO by Medel. Jesus Pimentel vs Cuauhtemoc Gomez - After splitting 4 slow rounds Pimentel took over scoring knockdowns in the 7th, 8th and 9th. Gomez somehow stormed back in the 10th despite the damage he took, but in the 11th after 3 knockdowns and several strong punches after that the referee ended the carnage. Pimentel scored an astounding 7 knockdowns that Gomez somehow got up from! Both Tom Trunzo and I had it 7-3 for Pimentel while the judges had it 8-2, 7-3, 7-3. Lupe Pintor vs Ricardo Vargas - Despite the closed left eye and the bloodied lip of Vargas, the crowd roared in approval after the fight ended in a 10 TKO when the referee ended the fight to save Vargas. He had Pintor down for a 9 count in the 1st round and kept storming back despite losing every round after the first! Both men met at ring center and hugged while awaiting the announcement of Pintor's 10th round TKO. Alfonso Zamora vs Efrain Pintor - Action packed bout that had Pintor down 2 times but still dead even on the cards of both Mirco Mizera and myself going into the 14th. This was a pure slugfest with both men taking turns pounding one another throughout. In the 15th round the underdog Pintor came out and landed a wild overhand right that floored Zamora for the count with 1:29 left in the fight! The judges had it 7-7, 7-5 and 8-6 for Zamora through 14, thus the KO was the only way for Pintor to win! Raul Casanova vs Victor Rabanales - Rabanales forced Casanova to fight through the first 7 rounds then ran out of gas. Casanova took over, but couldn't seem to stop himself from using dirty tactics and that cost him the fight after a blatant low blow in the 12th handed Rabanales the DQ win! Both Tom Trunzo and I had it 7-3 Casanova through 11. The judges had it 6-3, 6-4 & 6-5 Casanova. Jhonny Gonzalez vs Roberto Rubaldino - After 3 close hard fought rounds Gonzalez unleashed a furious combination that put Rubaldino down for the count in the 4th round! Raul Macias vs Heriberto Ruiz - Hard fought bout between true Mexican warriors saw Ruiz take a lead (4-3 on my card, 5-2 on the card of Lee A. Crooks.) only to have a cut on the eyelid of his right eye end his night, handing Macias the come from behind TKO in the 8th round. The interesting thing is the judges had it 3-3, 3-3 and 4-3 Macias through 7. Fili Nava vs Julio Zarate - A lot of close rounds in this rather dull affair that had few bright spots for either fighter. Both men were content to circle until the last 4 rounds when Nava was up so much that Zarate had no choice but to try to get the KO. It cost him a point when he landed a blatant low blow in the 13th in a round he'd clearly won. Both Andreas Raht and I had it 9-3 Nava, but the rounds were so close that we didn't know what to expect from the judges. They had it 10-3 Nava 10-4 Zarate! 9-4 for the winner by split decision Nava. Raul Perez vs Romeo Anaya - Anaya scored a knockdown in the 4th round as he forged the early lead, but Perez stormed back to score knockdowns in the 5th and 6th rounds enroute to a 7th round TKO on cuts. Manny Barrios vs Oscar Andrade - A dominating performance that saw Andrade score a pair of knockdowns, though he lost a point in the same round due to rabbit punching. It ended up going to the judges who scored it 9-6, 11-3, 11-4 for Andrade. For some reason the judges didin't deduct the point from Andrade but it was a moot point none the less. I had it 9-5 Andrade while Dennis Rodman had it 9-6. Genaro Garcia vs Cruz Carbajal - A brutal fight between the stalking Carbajal and the dancing Garcia saw Garcia go down in the 14th round of this bloody affair. Both men sported cuts and nearly closed eyes as they battled with a ferocity rarely seen in the sweet science! I had it 9-6 for Carbajal as he took the final 4 rounds on my card while Richard Plunkett had it 10-4 for Carbajal. The judges scored it 10-5, 12-3, 1-=5 for Carbajal. Luis Castillo vs Jose Toluco Lopez - Lopez tried to keep this tactical, but Lopez did well pressing things at times. Lopez on the other hand used the ring well to take the lions share of the rounds on my card 9-5 while Mark L. Elwood had it 10-4 for Lopez. The judges scored it 10-5, 11-4 & 9-6 for Lopez. |

Mexico - Bantamweights - Round 2
Round 2:
Carlos Zarate vs Efrain Pintor - It seems that when Zarate sees blood he goes into hyperdrive. He suffered a cut over his right eye in the 6th round then scored 5 knockdowns over the next 3 rounds before the referee had seen enough with 48 seconds left in the 9th round for the TKO. Ruben Olivares vs Victor Rabanales - Olivares came out and battered Olivares from the opening bell scoring at will until the referee ended the fight with 11 seconds left in the 2nd round as Rabanales was unable to defend himself. Jose Becerra vs Oscar Andrade - Becerra dominated from the start moving well and keeping Andrade off balance despite Andrade's ability to turn it into a brawl at times. After a pair of knockdowns in the 9th then 2 more in the 11th, Becerra put Andrade away with the 5th knockdown for the count in the 12th! Rafael Marquez vs Cruz Carbajal - After 10 brutal rounds that saw Marquez and Carbajal fight evenly despite a pair of Marquez knockdowns in the 9th round, the fight was decided in the 11th round due to a bad cut over the left eyebrow of Carbajal for the Marquez TKO. Both Romy Alvarez and myself had it 5-5 through 10 rounds, and the judges had it 5-5, 6-4 Marquez and 5-5. Jose Medel vs Jose Toluco Lopez - Medel wasted little time with Lopez, starching him with a beautiful combination to score the KO with 40 seconds left in the 1st round. Jesus Pimentel vs Jhonny Gonzalez - It seemed these 2 were meant for on another with Gonzalez punishing Pimentel as he came in, only to eat crisp leather in retaliation throughout this brutal fight. Gonzalez scored the lone knockdown, a flash in the 1st round when he was clearly losing the round. As the crowd stayed on their feet for most of the fight these 2 fought a classic Ali-Frazier style bout until Pimentel broke the nose of Gonzalez to end the fight in the 10th round for the TKO! I had it 5-4 Gonzalez while Roy Paeth had it 4-4. The judges had it 5-4, 4-5 & 6-2 for Gonzalez. Lupe Pintor vs Raul Macias - What started out as a fast paced fight that was too close to choose a leader through 6 (I had it 4-2 Pintor while Rocco DelSesto had it 3-2 Macias) ended up a drubbing in the 7th round when Pintor landed a huge uppercut that ended the night for the game Macias. All 3 judges had it 3-2 Pintor through 6. Fili Nava vs Raul Perez - Back and forth bout early on, Perez asserted himself in the latter rounds, scoring a knockdown in the 12th and nearly closing both eyes of Nava. Javier Aguirre Flores had it 9-4 Perez and I had it 9-5 Perez as agression overcame boxing prowess in our eyes. The judges scored it 10-3 Perez, 7-7 even & 9-4 for Perez by Majority Decision. |
