Tonights starting pitchers: Lenny DiNardo v Mike Wood.
-Not really a marquee matchup, I'm really surprised Las Vegas has the over/under at 9. If I were a betting man I'd hit the over. Err, and right now Joe Buck is a better option at catcher than Kendall.

Gack. 5 hits and 5 walks in 5 innings and nothing against Wood. NOTHING!

Wood has the mojo against his former employers. 3-0 in his career against the A's with all the wins coming in Oakland. He's 11-21 against all the other clubs.

It looks like Bradley is back. If he's lucky, he'll stay off the DL until the All Star break. Ya know, cuz he's contractually obligated to go on the DL at least 3 times a year.
In that article, it looks like we've traded for a retired Celtic.

Interesting exchange from yesterday chat with Will "Under the Knife" Carroll at BB Pro.
http://www.baseballprospectus.com/ch...php?chatId=302 "Eric Haushanc (Bend, Ore): I'm a big fan, Will. My question is about Billy Beane. Do you think he deserves all the accolades he gets as the GM of the A's? It appears to my eye that he's really good at a couple of things. Specifically, he's good at picking up valuable relievers on the cheap, and scrounging LFs and DHs that can help the team offensive and save some money that can be used somewhere else. But then, he uses that saved money very badly. Worse than other GMs. Jason Kendall is the biggest lead weight in either league, on offense, defense, and financially. His other big signings include top dollar for guys like Esteban Loaiza, and the over rated Eric Chavez. Terrence Long was another turkey contract. If he hadn't stolen Dan Haren from a really dumb Cardinal organization that clearly didn't listen to the likes of Eric Luhnow, the A's would be indistinguishable from the Royals, except they'd have less of a farm system. People, I think, need to stop making excuses for Beane. The A's payroll isn't small anymore, and other teams, like the Indians, have overtaken Beane in terms of innovation. Do you agree? Thanks for answering my question. Will Carroll: Eric wins longest question of the year. In fact, I've written UTKs that aren't this long. Yes, I think Beane (and the A's organization) deserves all the credit they've gotten. They aren't perfect, but I still think they're in the top two or three for most innovative. What it comes down to though is rings -- innovative hasn't won a ring yet this decade and when we look back, if one of those teams doesn't, we'll assess the "Moneyball Era" very differently."

I think the reason Beane's struggles are amplified is because he's playing with so little money that every mistake becomes a big one: keeping Chavez over Tejada and trading for Jason Kendall wouldn't look so bad if those two players weren't taking such a huge chunk of the team's overall salary (hell, most teams wouldn't have had to choose Chavez or Tejada). He's still been very impressive in developing homegrown talent and even if things continue to go sour there aren't many guys I'd rather have rebuild my team either.

I definitely disagree with that "rings" comment by Carroll. What Beane has been able to do putting his team in the position to win almost every year since '99 with his payroll is enough for me to give that guy my full-blown respect.

^^Gets it. Beane gets a lot of attention and the Moneyball label because someone wrote a book about him. Yes, rings would be nice, but the main point is that the A's have not had a losing season since 1998. No other team with similar limited resources can claim that.

Granted he's made a bunch of mistakes, but he's still very, very good.

IIRC, Oakland's payroll has been on the rise, relative to the league, the last couple of seasons, yet the team seems to be diminishing in quality.

I can't wait til Joe Blanton can consistently pitch like he did tonight.
