I first said we started a game late about 10 minutes in...anyone whos watched this team could probably have told you the game against the Czechs was over right as Koller's header went in the net.

It appears at least in England they think all the red cards were thoroughly justified. Although I must take exception to them calling it a match of shame. I thought it was a thoroughly entertaining match and a courageous effort by the Americans, not something to be embarrassed to be a part of at all.

There were 34 fouls, some of them disgraceful. There were three red cards, all of them justified, and three more yellow cards that might have turned the deeper colour. There were two goals, two memorable saves from either goalkeeper, and a match of shame petered out.

I think the 1st two reds were definitely justified. The elbow was a no-brainer on several levels. At first I thought the first US red was harsh, but looking at the replay I agree with it. There was no need for him to come flying in like that and when he came studs first into the side of the ankle he could easily have broken it. I only saw the last few minutes of the second half, but the pundits after said they agreed with the final red. Seems like it was a good game though, and the players must have been knackered by the end.

Yep, from what I've heard and read this morning everyone bar me thought all three should have been red cards - so I guess I was wrong, as always.

So therefore, I want to apologise for saying what I did about Mr. Larrionda last night.

Both the USA reds.

However now having seen the highlights again my comments last night showed how biased I really was.
Whilst I'm not sure a more experienced ref would have sent either one off, my comments that he was incompetent were poor. He only applied the letter of the law in both incidents and yet I still chastised him.

whats being said in New Zealand, Canada & the UK?

Seeing as how the All Blacks were playing last night, and the Wallabies and the Springboks, oh and the Warriors won oh yes and our female two won the Rowing World cup and um hang on I think the national netball had a semi-final as well plus oh and some guy is trying to surf the largest ever wave in Southland.... well the world cup only got the briefest of mentions on our nightly news

And also the referees have been explicitly told by FIFA to crack down on those sort of dangerous tackles.

As long as the ref is consistent then I generally have no complaints (how I feel about cricket umpires too) and I think although not the best referee in the entire world, this guy was reasonably consistent throughout the entire game.

I suppose Urgay is notorious for sendings off. With the first red I don't agree with the 'it was a two footed challenge so he had to go' argument. I think he went in with one foot and the second just came along the ground, although it certainly didn't help his case.

A few things also didn't help.. Flying in so quickly with studs showing, doing it in an area of the pitch where he really didn't need to, doing it right in front of the ref, coming in late, and finally the way he hit the ankle. That could have been a very nasty injury.

The second one though, was that for two yellow cards? I only saw it briefly on the highlights and it looked a bit as if Pope got ******ed a couple of times, as Italian forwards tend to do.

That's fair comment, however they've also been told to crack down on simulation, yet I've hardly seen any yellows brandished.

Why I guess I got caught up with it, is that if the referee hadn't been so strict was the game really any worse (discipline-wise) than any one of the previous 25 games?

More importantly I just showed my true colours last night, and for that I am truly embarrassed.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foot...06/4853182.stm - USA Italy match report.

A point was the least USA deserved after a display full of spirit and determination in Kaiserslautern.

If Ghana's brilliant win over Czech Republic earlier in the day opened up the group, USA looked in the mood to create the second real shock of the day.

They set about their more illustrious opponents with vigour in the early stages, pinning Italy back, with Bobby Convey and Clinton Dempsey both just missing the target...

Italy pressed but they could not break USA's resolve and the Americans claimed an extraordinary point to kick-start their World Cup campaign.

Yeah, Pope got two yellows to result in his dismissal
