I think this page proves this to be the case.

No, I realise that, but even so from that page, it looks like they want to get into the J-League in the near future.

As for the team name, the "best" translation follows:
Quote:
Origin of club name
It is the coined word which adjusts Dutch VAREN (fur ream) where the V of V・[huaren] takes the initial of VREDE (braider) which means peace with VITORIA ([vuitoria]) and Dutch which mean victory with Portuguese, means navigation to that.

Wow..maybe the city of Nagasaki is paying tribute to the first two Euro nations that set up shop in Japan. The great novel Shogun deals with the Portuguese-Dutch rivalry as a sub-plot. It makes sense in this context.

DOLA

Nagasaki was the only city that the Shogunite allowed Europeans to set up trading posts and visit.

The way I read it is that it means "Navigation to Victory", which although sounds odd in English, in Japanese maybe it isn't odd.

The logo is a mandarin duck (not a seagull), which the translation says is the prefectural bird of Nagasaki.

That makes a little more sense than what I got out of it.

I think it was before your time, but dola was replaced with skipaway for a while. Some people missed it, and so they thought everyone was talking to skipaway.
