You'd better! UK is no slouch behind the amazing passing assault of future NFL superstar Zack Hahn .

Guess that makes the decision on the college game of the week pretty easy.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
INDIANS LOSE 4TH STRAIGHT BUT RED SOX FAIL TO CAPITALIZE
Despite suffering their fourth straight loss the Cleveland Indians moved a half step closer to clinching the American League Pennant when second place Boston came up on the shortend of a 2-1 game in Chicago.

The Indians were beaten 4-3 in Philadelphia despite a 12 strikeout performance from Cleveland starting pitcher Bob Feller. Feller, with 202 k's on the season, is closing in on becoming the first pitcher since 1919 to fan more than 220 batters in a single season. Roy Cullenbine's 2-run homer in the 7th inning for the Athletics proved the difference in the game. In Chicago, Bud Byerly of the White Sox pitched a 5-hit gem to outduel Andy Karl and the Red Sox. Ted Williams hit his league-leading 35th homer of the season. Williams, also leads the American League in batting average and homeruns.

In other American League action Hank Greenberg's 2-run double with 2-out in the bottom of the ninth lifted Detroit past St Louis 6-5 while Washington moved past the Browns and into third place with a 5-3 win in New York.

CUBS STRETCH LEAD ON PIRATES AND PHILLIES
Infielders Phil Rizzuto and Don Johnson homered to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 4-0 victory over Boston. Ed Head went the distance for the Cubs for his 18th victory. The win leaves Chicago 6 games ahead of both Pittsburgh and Philadelphia in the National League after each of those clubs lost.

It was a devastating loss for the Pirates as St Louis scored 5 times in the bottom of the ninth and then won the game 7-6 on an Enos Slaughter rbi single in the 10th. In Philadelphia, Joe Medwick homered and drove in a pair of runs to lead Cincinnati past the Phillies 4-3.

In the other game the Brooklyn Dodgers beat New York 9-5 handing the Giants their 92nd loss of the season. With 11 games to play the Giants have an outside shot at matching their team record for losses in a season (100) or perhaps even equalling the National League record for futility of 101 losses sufferred by the 1939 Phillies. The Major league loss record is 109 set by the Chicago White Sox in 1929.

BOXING
TAMPA TOMMY KO'S MURRAY
In a battle of top 10 heavyweights Tampa Tommy Gomez scored a 5th round knockout of Ohio native Lee Q Murray at Cleveland's Municipal Stadium. Each fighter spent time on the canvas as Gomez started fast and knocked Murray down in the first round. Murray recovered and nearly had Gomez finished in the third when he floored him twice. On both occassions Gomez beat the count and after a lackluster fourth round he took charge in the fifth. A big hook early in the round put Murray off balance and Gomez moved in to finish his opponent off. Murray survived for nearly two minutes as Gomez reigned blow after blow upon him but with 8 seconds remaining in the round a violent hook ended Murray's day.

In other fight action, former World Bantamweight champion Fernando Gagnon had little trouble winning by a second round TKO in his bout with Massachusetts featherweight Leon Hutson. Gagnon with a 34-4-1 record is hoping to get a shot at the winner of the September 27th World Bantamweight Title fight between champion Luis Galvani and Japan's Hiroshi Horiguchi.

Top ranked featherweight contender Sandy Saddler had an easy time with a knockout victory in a 6 round match against Angelo Ambrosano. Saddler, 25-2 for his career, is preparing to meet third ranked Chalky Wright at the end of the month. The winner of the Wright-Saddler fight will likely meet undefeated world champion Willie Pep in the new year. Saddler's only 2 professional losses have both come against Pep.

Heavyweight Tony Bosnich of San Francisco beat Baltimore's Al Spaulding by a 7th round knockout. St Louis LHW Pat McCafferty scored a first round knockout of Kansas native Bob Johnson to improve his record to 19-12. Another LHW, Joey Maxim is now 30-10 after winning a unanimous decision over Bill Thompson in Jamaica, New York.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
ATLANTIC 8 CONFERENCE PREVIEW
The Atlantic 8 is really a four team conference as Temple, UMass, Fordham and Rhode Island have dominated play since inception. LaSalle, while never winning a conference title, has had some success but the remaining three schools : Dayton, St Bonaventure and Xavier, have never played a postseason game in either the NCAA's or NIT.

1947-48 CONFERENCE PREDICTIONS
1- LASALLE: Center Corry Eller and PF Fred *Paine make the all-conference preseason team and should led the Explorers to their third trip to the NCAA's and perhaps their first conference title. The backcourt is a question mark but LaSalle is hoping sophomore Pat Thomas and junior Jareth Bevill can step up.

2- TEMPLE - Small forward Eric Lindsay and C-PF Kevin *Castle will keep the Owls in tournament contention. Having senior guard Paul *Napolitano healthy again will also help. *Napolitano averaged nearly 8 assists a game as a sophomore but missed half of last season with an injury.

3- FORDHAM - Senior guard Adam Allen, who was a starter on back to back Sweet 16 teams, will be counted on to provide veteran leadership for the relatively inexperienced Rams. Junior forward Johnny *Orr could have a break out season and sophomore PF Ian Halberstadt is a player to watch.

4- MASSACHUSETTS - With 3 starters returning plus junior PF Del Torn, who started as a freshman but missed most of last season, UMass could be reaching the postseason for a 4th straight season. This year the Minutemen set their goals higher than a 3rd straight trip to the NIT.

5- RHODE ISLAND - Forward Winward Brown from New Bedford, Massachusetts could end up being the best freshman in the league. He and sophomore center Kalil Davenport give Rhode Island fans plenty of reason to look forward to the future.

6- DAYTON - Senior Edwin *Kachen returns for his fourth season as a starter at Dayton. He is one of the few bright spots on a team that won just 6 games a year ago.

7- ST BONAVENTURE - Another long season for the Bonnies who have never played a postseason game and at 10-20 a year ago enjoyed their first double-digit victory season in 4 years.

8- XAVIER - The Musketeers tied a school record for futility by winning just 9 games a year ago. Things don't look much better this year although sophomore guard Tony Maddox may be ready for a breakout season.

Whoa, go UMass! Always been a big fan of them. In this reality, it seems the higher conferences get all the press......

Just kidding Tiger Fan. I still don't know how you do it.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
OLSEN WINS 23RD AS CUBS BLAST BRAVES
Vern Olsen improved his record to 23-8 by pitching a complete game 5-hitter as the Chicago Cubs blasted Boston 9-2. The victory lowers the Cubs magic number for clinching at least a tie for the National League Pennant to 4. Bill Nicholson hit his 16th homer of the season to pace the Chicago attack. Phil Rizzuto and Don Johnson each drove in a pair of runs. Johnson had 3 hits to extend his hitting streak to a career high 15 games.

Reds reliever Johnny Hetki balked in the winning run as the Philadelphia Phillies scored 4 times in the bottom of the ninth to win a wild one over Cincinnati. The Reds had scored 3 times in the top of the inning to take an 8-5 lead before the Phillies rallied for the 9-8 victory. Charlie Schanz did not factor in the decision as he was chased in the 8th, so the Phillies hurler remains stuck on 19 victories. He is 0-4 in his 6 starts since winning his 19th game of the year.

Ernie White won his 19th as he outduelled Preacher Roe in the Cardinals 2-0 win over Pittsburgh in St Louis. Rookie first baseman Earl Torgeson drove in both runs and had 3 of the Cardinals 9 hits.

In the other National League game Brooklyn doubled New York 6-3.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
The Cleveland Indians also have a magic number of 4 to clinch at least a tie for the American League pennant after the Tribe topped Philadelphia 5-3. Outfielder Terry Moore had 4 hits and a pair of rbi's to lead the Cleveland offense while Warren Spahn and reliever Johnny Babich combined on a 5-hitter. A's second baseman Buddy Blattner suffered a season ending injury when he was hurt making a diving catch.

Al Zarilla had 4 hits and 6 rbi's to lead Boston past Chicago 9-2. Red Sox hurler Earl Johnson picked up his 21st win of the season. In the only other American League game Dixie Walker's 2-run double gave the New York Yankees a 3-2 victory over Washington.

TSN PROGNOSTICATOR GOES 0-3
After going 0-3 against the spread a week ago I will take one more shot at selecting my two sure things and an upset special.

The Bears a home dog? Doesn't matter how good Green Bay was playing I am all over that pick. Take Chicago plus one.

I think the Lions are much better than they get credit for. Detroit should have little problem with Minnesota at home. Take Detroit giving away the field goal.

UPSET SPECIAL - The Colts may not win outright but they should have little trouble covering the 8 point spread at Tennessee.

BIG 8 CONFERENCE PREVIEW
You would be hard pressed to find a better program than Oklahoma A&M, the class of the Big 8 conference. The Aggies have 7 conference titles to go with 4 Final Four appearances including 1933-34 when they won the National Championship. Just for good measure Oklahoma A&M also won an NIT title in 1936-37. 6 years removed from their last trip to the final four, the Aggies will face plenty of competition in their own conference this season as Missouri may have it's best team ever and Kansas also looks quite strong.

1947-48 BIG EIGHT PREDICTED ORDER OF FINISH

1- MISSOURI: 3 starters return from last years NIT championship squad including preseason all-conference team member Hunter Moncrieffe. With Moncrieffe and Brandon Sharpe upfront, and a backcourt featuring junior Charles Crutcher and sophomore David King, Missouri fans envision the Tigers making a lot of noise come March.

2- OKLAHOMA A&M: At 15-14, the Aggies are coming off their worst season in school history. However, things should be back to normal this season for one of the winningest schools in NCAA history. Dick *Schnittker and Jack *Shelton were outstanding as freshmen last year and should be even better this season. Add in towering freshman Bob *Kurland and there is no shortage of size up front. Senior PG Lonnie *Eggleston made the preseason all-conference team.

3- KANSAS: With 4 returning starters and a top 5 recruiting class the Jayhawks will give Missouri and Oklahoma A&M a run for the conference title. PG Georgi Spady from Carmel, Illinois, could contend for National freshman of the year honours. Junior Kal McDuffie is the only non-senior on the preseason all-conference team.

4- OKLAHOMA: The Sooners have missed the NCAA tournament each of the past 3 seasons and with the tough competition in the Big 8 this may be season 4 without an invite to the dance.

5- IOWA STATE: A year ago won the schools second-ever conference title and made it to the Sweet 16. Three starters from that team : PG John *Hazen, SF Paul *Gordon and PF Garold Schneller return. Much of the success will depending on the ability of freshman center Marvin Qualls to adjust to the college game.

6- NEBRASKA: With just two starters back from a team that finished .500 a year ago, the Cornhuskers will need big seasons from sophomores Howie *Williams and Milt *Whitehead if they are going to accomplish much this season.

7- KANSAS STATE: It has been 10 seasons since the Wildcats made the postseason and this sure looks like year 11. There is a good chance two freshman will be in the starting lineup as senior Noah Washington is the only returning starter on a team with 6 freshman and 4 sophomores.

8- COLORADO: The perenniel weak sister of the Big 8, the Buffaloes have never been to the NCAA's and made only one NIT appearance in their history. Coming off back to back 21 loss seasons with a good chance to make it 3 straight years suffering at least 20 defeats.

BOXING
MARCIANO AND xSMITH CONTINUE TO CLIMB HEAVYWEIGHT RANKS
Rocky Marciano improved to a perfect 3-0 with 3 straight TKO victories after stopping Albert Abelt in the first round of their bout in New York last night. Connecticut native Abelt was no match for the man being billed as The Brockton Blockbuster. Marciano, from Brockton, Massachusetts will next fight on October 3 against a yet to be determined opponent.

Meanwhile Iowa native Jeffrey xSmith improved to 5-0 as a pro after stopping Frank Androff by TKO in the 6th round of their scheduled 10 round bout in Minneapolis. Like Marciano and Roland LaStarza, Smith seems to be on the fastrack towards a shot against a top 10 World ranked fighter. His handlers are expecting Smith to fight one more tune-up bout in the next couple of weeks and then face someone like 11th ranked Pat Valentino. Speaking of Valentino, he improved to 16-10-3 with a 6th round knock out of Jimmy Carollo yesterday.

LaStarza will face a tough test tonight when he faces Clarence Henry. Henry, at age 22 is just two years older than LaStarza, but with a record of 20-6-1 has a wealth of pro experience. LaStarza won both of his pro fights but really struggled in a bout he should have won easily against Eldridge Eatman at Madison Square Garden early this month. Many experts feel Henry is just too much of a step up for LaStarza at this point in his young career. They will be fighting at Madison Square Garden on the undercard of the fighting involving top ranked welterweights Marty Servo and Johnny Bratton. Bratton, at 22-3-1, is ranked the number one challenger to world champion Sugar Ray Robinson while Servo 29-5-1 is rated 6th in the weight class.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
BOUDREAU'S 4 HITS POWER INDIANS PAST TIGERS
Shortstop Lou Boudreau had 4 hits to help the Cleveland Indians beat Detroit 7-3 and inch a little closer to clinching their second straight American League Pennant. The Indians broke the game open with a 6 run outburst in the 3rd inning, which turned out to be more than enough support for pitcher Ray Poat, who went the distance allowing just 6 Detroit hits.

The Indians remain 6 games ahead of Boston after the Red Sox trimmed the Yankees 4-3. For the second straight game Al Zarilla had 4 hits for Boston. In the other American League games Philadelphia doubled St Louis 8-4 while Washington scored 4 times in the 10th to top Chicago 12-9.

In the National League the Cubs remain 6 games in front despite being shut out 4-0 by Boston. Rookie Braves hurler Bill McCahan went the distance for his first major league shut out. The Phillies also lost so the Cubs remain 6 games ahead of Philadelphia. Rookie Art Houtteman won his 13th game of the season as Cincinnati topped the Phillies 5-3.

Pittsburgh is also 6 games back after Ralph Kiner's 3-run homer in the 8th lifted the Pirates past St Louis 5-2.

HAMILTON TAKES LEAD IN CHAMPIONS EVENT
Bob Hamilton carded the best round of the day, a 5 under par 67, and as a result he enjoys a 3 stroke lead midway through the Tournament of Champions PGA event in Houston. Hamilton, who won the 1944 PGA championship, had 4 birdies on the back nine to take a 3 stroke lead on Sam Snead, Jim Ferrier and British Ryder Cup captain Harry Cotton.

BRATTON AND SERVO BATTLE TO A DRAW
Top welterweight title candidates Johnny Bratton and Marty Servo fought to a stalemate in their 12 round bout at Madison Square Garden. Bratton, with a 23-3-2, career record, had complete control of the fight early but Servo, 29-5-2, came on strong in the later rounds. The difference as it would turn out, was the point Bratton was penalized in the fourth for a low blow.

On the undercard, promising young New York heavyweight Roland LaStarza scored a close but unanimous victory of the much more experienced Clarence Henry. The victory improves LaStarza's record to 3-0 and it came against a very tough opponent in the Los Angeles native Henry.

In Britian, Ronnie Clayton of England stopped Jim Kenny in the 11th round of the featherweight bout. With the win Clayton retains the European featherweight title and also takes Kenny's British Commonwealth Featherweight belt. Staying in Europe, German lightheavyweight Rudel xDietrich lost a unanimous decision to Paco Bueno of Spain. It was a rematch of their May bout in which Dietrich won with a first round knock out. The loss evens xDietrich's record at 2-2.

Back after a busy work week and a terrible bout of the flu...couldn't have asked for any worse timing.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
DRAMATIC COMEBACK INCHES CUBS CLOSER TO CROWN
Rip Russell's pinch-hit grandslam capped a 7 run Chicago rally in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Cubs dropped Cincinnati 11-7. The amazing comeback, in a game in which the Cubs trailed 7-2 heading into the bottom of the 8th inning, lowered Chicago's magic number for clinching at least a tie for the National League pennant to 2. Pittsburgh and Philadelphia each won yesterday but both remain 6 games back of the Cubs with 8 games to play. Bob Elliott homered and drove in 5 runs to lead the Pirates past hapless New York 11-3 while Joe Gordon's 25th homer of the season aided the Phillies in their 9-0 shutout of Boston. In the only other National League game Brooklyn spanked St Louis 8-3.

Boston gained a game on Cleveland in the American League race. The Red Sox got 4 hits from shortstop Johnny Hudson as they shaded the Yankees 4-3. Hudson has moved into a virtual tie with teammate Ted Williams for the American League batting lead. Williams is bidding for the triple crown. In Detroit, Tommy Henrich hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 9th to give the Tigers a 6-4 win over Cleveland leaving the Indians magic number for clinching at least a tie at 3.

In other American League action St Louis dropped Philadelphia 6-1 while Chicago doubled Washington 4-2.

MISSISSIPPI LAYS THE "BOOM" ON KENTUCKY
Mississippi linebacker JD xBoomchenko returned a third quarter interception for the winning touchdown to ensure Mississippi a 17-9 victory over Kentucky in the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams. The Ole Miss defense, led by xBoomchenko's 12 tackles dominated the game, limiting the Wildcats to just 3 field goals. Mississippi WR Joe *Johnson also had a strong game, hauling in 7 passes including a touchdown pass from QB Charlie *Conerly. The Mississippi win avenged Kentucky's 22-14 victory a year ago. After going winless within the SEC schedule a season ago, Mississippi looks like it could compete with the big boys in the conference this season.

One other SEC team was in action yesterday as Alabama blanked Southern Mississippi 31-0.

It was a banner day for the Southwest Conference as all 5 schools in action came away with victories. The University of Texas had an easy time blanking Texas Tech 40-0 while Texas Christian's defense was outstanding in a 13-0 blanking of Kansas. Arkansas, Baylor and Texas A&M all had no trouble with small college opponents.

Other games involving bigger schools included Oklahoma A&M blanking Kansas State 14-0, Clemson shutout Presbyterian 17-0, St Mary's outscored Portland 23-17 in a battle of western independants, Missouri beat rival St Louis handily 42-10, Penn State dropped Washington State 21-6 and Iowa hammered North Dakota State 30-0.

In a week that mainly featured larger college teams tuning up on small college opponents there were not many surprises. However, one exception was Washington & Lee of the Southern Conference being upset 21-20 by Quantico Marines.

Defense was the name of the game in Calgary as the Stampeders dropped Winnipeg by a 20-1 score. The Bombers were held to just 214 total yards on the day. Calgary's offense was not much better but kicker Bob Shaw proved the difference, hitting on 4 field goals to give the Stampeders their first win of the season. In the other Western game, Edmonton improved to 4-0 by withstanding a late Regina comback bid and hung on to beat the Green Riders 19-13.

Despite throwing 5 interceptions the visiting Montreal Alouettes upended the Toronto Argonauts 33-29 in IPRFU play. The Alouettes are a perfect 4-0 in league play. Ottawa QB Jack Scarbath completed 16 of 21 passes for 227 yards while running back Tom Tracy gained 144 yards on the ground as the Roughriders beat Hamilton 23-18.

PEP EASILY DEFENDS TITLE IN LOS ANGELES
World featherweight champion Willie Pep improved to a perfect 21-0 with a unanimous 15 round decision over California native Georgie Hansford in their title bout. Pep knocked the challenger to the canvas in the first round but failed to finish him off. Hansford, with a 21-14 record, deserves credit for managing to survive the entire 15 rounds but survive is all he did as he rarely landed anything but a glancing blow. Next up for Pep will be a bout in Dallas against a Cuban who goes by the name National Kid on October 10th. The 27 year old Kid, who's real name is Adolfo Giz, is 24-11-1 and should just be another tune-up fight for Pep as the champ prepares for a Halloween bout in New Orleans against 4th ranked featherweight Henry Armstrong (31-2).

FERRIER LEADS THE WAY HEADING TO FINAL ROUND OF CHAMPIONSHIP
18 holes of golf is all that stands between Jim Ferrier and a $5,000 cheque for winning the Tour of Champions year end event in Houston. Ferrier, who earned just a little over $6,200 in prize money during the season, has a 2 stroke lead heading in to today's final round. Jack Fleck, Bob Hamilton and Jay Hebert are tied for second. Pre-tournament favourite Ben Hogan, who leads all money winners this season with over $22,000 in winnings, is a dissappointing 12th after 3 days.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
PIRATES AND PHILLIES REMAIN ALIVE, BUT JUST BARELY
The Philadelphia Phillies and Pittsburgh Pirates still cling to hope in the National League pennant race after they each won while first place Chicago lost to Cincinnati. The Cubs lead the Phils and Bucs by 5 games with each team having 7 contests remaining.

Ralph Kiner and Elmo Valo each homered twice as Pittsburgh hammered New York 14-7. In Philadelphia, Hugh Mulcahy notched his 17th win of the season while Bobby Estalella had 3 hits including a homer to lead the Phillies past Boston 7-4. At Wrigley, Stan Ferens and 3 Cincinnati relievers combined to 6-hit the Cubs in a 3-1 Reds victory. In the only other National League game Brooklyn beat St Louis 3-1.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
The Cleveland Indians magic number for clinching at least a tie for the AL pennant is down to one after the Tribe beat Detroit while second place Boston lost in New York. Bob Feller tossed a complete game 2-hitter for his 14th win of the season as the Indians dumped the Tigers 5-1. At Yankee Stadium, Dixie Walker's 3-run homer proved the difference in a 5-4 Yankee win that left the Red Sox 6 games back of Cleveland with 7 to play.

In other American League action reserve catcher Hank Riebe hit a 3-run homer as St Louis dropped Philadelphia 7-1 while Fred Hutchinson was denied his 20th win of the season when his Washington Senators were beaten 6-3 by Chicago.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Red Sox outfielder Al Zarilla was named the American League player of the week while National League honours went to Brooklyn pitcher Alex Carrasquel. Zarilla was on fire, hitting .571 with 9 rbi's to win the award for the first time in his career. The 28 year old has played 86 of his 170 career major league games this season, and is batting .389 with 4 homers and 22 rbi's on the year. The 35 year old Carrasquel also wins the player of the week for the first time in his career. Mainly used as a reliever with Washington and Pittsburgh, he was converted to a starter this season immediately after the Dodgers acquired him at the trade deadline. He is 9-3 with 9 saves and a 3.58 era on the year.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE
COULD THERE BE A CHANGING OF THE GUARD IN NFC NORTH?
After three years of dominance the Chicago Bears reign atop the NFC North Division may be over. The much improved Green Bay Packers waltzed into Soldier Field yesterday and tamed the Bears 35-16. What made matters even more embarrassing for the Bears, was the Pack did it with their phenomenal rookie quarterback sitting on the bench with a broken foot. Jordan Montana, who struggled mightily last season when the Packers were 5-11, took over at qb in the first quarter when Frank *Albert was sidelined. Montana completed 20 of 28 passes including 3 touchdown strikes but the big story for Green Bay was running back Tony *Canadeo. The veteran gained 101 yards on the ground and added another 97 yards receiving and scored 3 touchdowns.

With a 3-1 record the Packers are presently the number one ranked team in the league power ratings. Chicago is also 3-1 but ranked just 11th overall. The problem for the Bears was the same as first diagnosed in the preseason. All of a sudden the defending league champions can not stop anyone on defense, particularily in the red zone. The Bears defense is rated 22nd in the league.

With an offense led by league MVP Sid *Luckman it is foolish to count the Bears out after just one loss but it is becoming more and more clear this is not the same team that dominated the league a year ago.

In other action:

Gene Szott ran for 133 yards as Minnesota beat Detroit 27-6. A change in quarterbacks served the Vikings well as second year man Jim Elliot replaced rookie Paul *Governali for the first time this season. Elliot threw a pair of touchdown passes.

Ulish Groce threw a pair of touchdown passes as the Kansas City Chiefs held off San Diego 24-22. Back up running back Ray Richards, replacing the injured Bruce Jones, gained a career high 99 yards for Kansas City. With rookie back Bob *Fenimore sidelined with an injury the Chargers could mount no groud attack at all.

6 field goals and only one touchdown in a defensive struggle at Oakland. The Raiders prevailed over Denver by a 16-9 score.

Jacksonville got its first win and drove Houston from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 20-16 victory over the Texans. Jags QB Tommy Bledsoe threw a pair of 4th quarter touchdowns to secure the win.

5 fumbles and an interception cost the Buffalo Bills at Foxboro as the New England Patriots handed the Bills their fourth straight loss, 24-6.

Miami is also 0-4 after being outscored 38-24 by the New York Jets. Jets receiver Randy Pricer had 145 yards receiving in the win.

Rookie QB Harry *Gilmer threw a pair of touchdown passes as the Giants beat the Redskins 24-10 in Washington.

The Eagles needed a late field goal from CR Evans to beat winless Dallas 22-20. Harley Mitchell had 146 yards rushing for Philadelphia.

Ike Meier threw a pair of touchdown passes in the third quarter as the 49ers improved to 3-1 with a 28-16 win over the St Louis Rams.

Arizona got it's first win of the season, stopping Seattle 21-18.

Atlanta built a 28-7 lead and hung on to beat New Orleans 28-25 despite the fact Saints QB Ryan Boyette passed for 233 yards and ran for over 100. Boyette dug himseld a hole in the first half with a pair of interceptions that were both turned into touchdowns for the Falcons.

Charles *Trippi threw for 319 yards as Tennessee trimmed Indianapolis 16-13. Both teams had little trouble moving the ball between the twenties but in the red zone each defense was exceptionally stingy.

Tonight's game has 1-2 Tampa visiting 1-2 Carolina. Despite a slow start the Bucs insist that Paul *Christman and not first round pick Otto *Graham will start at quarterback once again.

GOLF
FERRIER WINS TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS
Shooting 11 under par over the final 36 holes allowed Jim Ferrier to coast to the $5,000 first prize money at the PGA's year end Tournament of Champions event in Houston, Texas. Ferrier finished 5 strokes ahead of Sam Snead as all 3 of the golfers who entered the final round with a legitamite shot at Ferrier faded quickly. Jack Fleck, Bob Hamilton and Jay Hebert each entered the final round two strokes back of Ferrier but all 3 ran into troubles early.

For Ferrier the victory caps a solid season that saw him also win the US Open and finish 4th on the overall money winner list. The tournament puts an end to the golf season for this year but golf will be back in the news in late February when tour qualifying begins.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
PHILLIES MOVE TO WITHIN 4 GAMES
There is still a little life left in the Philadelphia Phillies as they gained a game on the Chicago Cubs yesterday. It really is just a flicker though as the Phillies are 4 games behind the league leaders with just 6 to play.

Charley Schanz finally got his 20th win of the season as he shut down Preacher Roe and the Pittsburgh Pirates by an 8-3 score. Schanz allowed just 3 hits in 8 innings work before giving way to Johnny Podgajny to preserve the win. For Schanz, it gives him a 20 win season in his first year used exclusively as a starter. He had been stalled at 19 victories for his last 6 starts. Even better news for Phillies fans was word that the Brooklyn Dodgers scored twice in the top of the 10th inning to beat Vern Olsen and the Chicago Cubs 4-2. Olsen, with 23 wins this year, takes the loss for just the 9th time.

In other National League action, Ernie White 4-hit Cincinnati in the Cardinals 4-0 victory over the Reds. The 31 year old White wins his 20th game for the third straight season. New York beat Boston 3-2 in the other game.

RED SOX GAIN SOME GROUND
Like the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League, the Boston Red Sox remain alive in the American League pennant race after beating Detroit 5-4 thanks to a 3-run rally in the 9th inning. Red Sox hurler Earl Johnson notched his 22nd victory of the season. Not bad for the 28 year old who had never started a major league game before this year. The New York Yankees helped the Red Sox remain alive by beating first place Cleveland 3-1. The Indians lead Boston by 5 games with each club having 6 remaining to play.

St Louis scored 6 times in the top of the 10th to beat Chicago 8-2 while Philadelphia topped Washington 6-4 in 12 innings in the other two American League games.

BUCS SHINE ON MONDAY NIGHT STAGE
Tampa Bay quarterback Paul *Christman started the Monday night game with his hometown fans calling for rookie Otto *Graham to replace him. By the time the fourth quarter rolled around the same fans were chanting *Christman's name after he threw for 369 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Bucs past Carolina 23-13 in the Monday night NFL game.

*Christman came up with the best start of his 2 year career as he helped the Bucs even their record at 2-2. Carolina is also 2-2 after Panthers QB Javon Jamieson was picked off 4 times in the game. Carolina entertains 3-1 Philadelphia next week while the Bucs travel to Dallas to face the winless Cowboys.

JAZZ GUARD DEMANDS TRADE
Veteran point guard Daniel Gray has reportedly told the New Orleans Jazz that he wants out. While the Jazz organization would not confirm the report they did say they would consider dealing Gray if the right opportunity came along. Reports all summer had Gray extremely upset at the Jazz deciding to cut loose his teammate and good friend Cameron Belli. Belli, was allowed to leave and signed with the Milwaukee Hawks after a feud with fellow Jazz star Ethan Milner.

The Milner/Belli feud goes back to their senior year of college when Belli was selected first overall by the Jazz and Milner went second to Dallas in the 1933 draft. Both have enjoyed outstanding careers, as Milner is the league's alltime scoring leader while Belli ranks 6th, but have feuded publicly throughout their careers. Four years ago the Jazz convinced Milner to leave Dallas and join Belli in New Orleans. The union had some success as they won 2 league titles (to go with the two Belli had won in New Orleans prior to Milner's arrival) but after a last place finish a year ago things boiled over and there were clearly plenty of personality conflicts with the Jazz last season.

After missing half a year two seasons ago with a foot injury, Gray rebounded last year, averaging 18.1 ppg and starting 71 games as he made his 4th all-star game appearance. Gray has played over 400 games in the Jazz backcourt since being taken 8th overall out of Wake Forest in 1940. He has averaged 16.2 ppg and 5.8 apg over his career and played a key role on 3 New Orleans championship teams.

NBA teams are reporting to training camp this week in preparation for the season opener October 12th.

1947-48 PREDICTED ORDER OF FINISH
1- SYRACUSE : It has been a few years since the Orangemen had the type of team that could go far in the NCAA's but this season's squad may do just that. Junior center Milo *Komenich is ready for a breakout season and sophomore guard Bob *Savage could also blossom into a star. Freshman guard Jack *Kiley is also a player to watch.

2- PROVIDENCE : Even with the graduation of Kenna Marsh and Ben *Schadler the Friars are still one of the teams to beat in the Big East this season. SF Howie *Janotta average 17.0 ppg as a sophomore last year and will lead a young team this season. PG Shon Fralick could contend for National Freshman of the year and the rest of the recruiting class is also outstanding.

3- BOSTON COLLEGE : With junior guard Frank *Kudelka and two great sophomores in PF Hal *Haskins and PG Joe *Hutton the Eagles could win their first conference title in a decade.

3- ST JOHN'S : Plenty of veteran leadership led by senior SF Keith Lamunyon and junior center Don *Otten makes the always dangerous Red Storm a factor.

5- SETON HALL : A balanced veteran club led by senior center Jammer McGee and an emerging star in sophomore forward Paul *Arizin.

6- CONNECTICUT : Ballhandling specialist Donald *Smith and center Pere Pinkerton give the Huskies two strong players but the supporting cast is suspect to say the least. UConn has never won the Big East title.

7- GEORGETOWN : Junior center Robert Kramer is the only returning starter from last season's conference tournament winning club.

8- RUTGERS : Another season in the basement for the perennial league doormat. Aside from a miracle run to the NIT finals in 1943, Rutgers has played just 2 tournament games (1 NCAA and 1 NIT) since 1932. Have 7 wins in conference over the last 3 seasons combined.

WILSON OUTPOINTS GRAHAM IN WELTERWEIGHT TUSSLE
Jackie Wilson scored a 12 round split decision victory over Billy Graham at Madison Square Garden in a battle of top welterweight contenders. Wilson, from Los Angeles, improves to 29-4-1 with the victory and may yet get a shot a world champion Sugar Ray Robinson. Wilson was in line for a chance at the champ before losing to number one ranked contender Johnny Bratton in May. The New York native Graham falls to 18-4-2 with the loss.

In other action Canadian welterweight champion Johnny Greco successfully defended his title at Maple Leaf Gardens with a unanimous decision over Maxie Berger. Greco is 14-12-1 while Berger's record drops to 13-22.

Tonight, highly touted lightweight Phil Kim of Hawaii fights his second bout as a pro in Los Angeles. Kim will take on journeyman Eddie Marcus (2-8-2) in an 8 round bout. The 21 year old Kim won his pro debut last month with an easy unanimous decision over Freddie Herman.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
INDIANS CLINCH AMERICAN LEAGUE PENNANT
The Cleveland Indians clinched their second straight American League pennant with a 6-0 victory over the New York Yankees. The win, coupled with Boston's 6-4 loss in Detroit, leaves the Indians 6 games ahead of the Red Sox with just 5 left to play.

Lou Klein and Jim Gleeson homered for the Indians in their win at Yankee Stadium. Ray Poat went the distance for a 7-hit shutout to improve his record to 13-12 on the season. Dizzy Dean took the loss. In Detroit, the Red Sox fell behind 6-0 early as the Tiger bats got to Boston starter Rube Melton. The Red Sox staged a rally but ultimately fell short. All that is left for Boston fans is to see if Ted Williams can become the first American Leaguer to win the triple crown since Babe Ruth did it in 1926. Williams has the homerun title clinched, but is tied for the lead in rbi's with St Louis outfielder Wally Judnich, and leads teammate Johnny Hudson by .001 in the batting race.

In other American League action the Browns blanked Chicago 1-0 while Washington topped Philadelphia 5-3.

NATIONAL LEAGUE
In the National League the Chicago Cubs let one get away against Brooklyn for the second straight day. After losing in extra innings on Monday, the Cubs gave up two runs in the top of the ninth, on rookie Jackie Robinson's 12th homer of the season, and fell 5-4 to the Dodgers.

However, second place Philadelphia failed to capitalize as the Phillies lost 8-6 to Pittsburgh. The Pirates, who got 4 rbi's from Arky Vaughan in the win, pull back into a second place tie with Philadelphia - 4 games back of the Cubs. The Pirates and Phillies meet again today. A Pittsburgh win sends the Bucs into a 4-game season ending series against the Cubs with the pennant on the line. Chicago will be in complete control though, as the Cubs need to win just one of those 4 games to clinch.

In other action yesterday Boston topped the New York Giants 10-6 while Cincinnati thumped St Louis 9-1. Rookie hurler Art Houtteman won his 14th game of the season for the Reds.

KIM WINS SECOND PRO BOUT
Up and coming lightweight Phil Kim scored an easy decision over Eddie Marcus in their 8 round bout in Los Angeles. The 21 year old Hawaiin is now 2-0 as a pro and is expected to work his way up the lightweight ranks.

Tonight, another young fighter with some promise, German middleweight Gustav Scholz, will make his pro debut in Munich.

BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE PREVIEW
Big South is a misnomer as this collection of small schools battle yearly for the one automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Only Charleston Southern, back in 1940, has ever managed to win a single tournament game. Liberty got the conference's last postseason NIT bid, back in 1944.

1- UNC ASHEVILLE : The Bulldogs have won the conference four of the past 5 seasons and are the team to beat again this year thanks to a veteran group of big men including preseason all-conference selection Andrew *Levane and C Speedy Dukes.

2- BIRMINGHAM-SOUTHERN : Senior center Roger Lane is healthy after missing all but 5 games a year ago. His return to form coupled with standout guard Dennis Davis amd fellow senior Ken Castleman should make the Panthers a contender.

3- ELON : Seniors Isaac Keys and Kailan Ware are the leaders for the Phoenix. 4 starters return from last season's squad.

4- CHARLESTON SOUTHERN : Preseason all-Big South selection Dennis O'Connell is the emotional leader for the Buccaneers. He is one of 5 seniors on a veteran roster.

5- LIBERTY : All 5 starters return for the Flames but they likely lack the skill to contend with the top teams in the conference. Junior center Murray *Mitchell was named to the preseason all-conference team.

6- WINTHROP : It will be a young Eagles team this year as all 5 starters are graduated. Junior forward Max *Morris will be counted on to lead.

7- COASTAL CAROLINA : Junior college transfers Ryan Vargas and Troy Rushing will be counted on to revitalize a program that has never had a winning season.

8- RADFORD : The Highlanders could start three true freshman this season including highly touted center Ben Bourdreau and guard Riz Oakley. Oakley ran into academic problems or he likely would have been recruited by a much more prestigous school.
