The White Sox began the season at 9-0, quickly quieting critics that doubted they could repeat as AL champs with the loss of the 8 "Black Sox" still embroiled in legal struggles. However, the Sox finished April in second place. Washington took over the early lead with a strong 15-9 month.

The Robins lead the NL after one month. They are led by a strong pitching staff, but they unfortunately lost one of their top starters, Anthony Shipman, for the season with a shoulder injury. The Cardinals, who moved into Sportsman's Park this season (also the home of the Browns), are tied for second with the Giants. Both New York and St. Louis have had strong starts this season and are just 2.5 games behind Brooklyn.

Batters of the Month:

AL - "Smally" Becker, 2B, St. Louis Browns - He hit .389 with 19 RBI and 16 runs scored.

NL - Mike Boardway, 1B, Philadelphia Phillies - He hit .410 with 18 RBI and 25 runs scored. Boardway was long one of the top young players in Philadelphia, and perhaps at the age of 27 he is beginning to harness his abilities.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Andrew Murphy, Chicago White Sox - He was 6-0 with a 1.90 ERA and 1 shutout.

NL - Hugh Tiedt, Chicago Cubs - He was 4-2 with a 1.40 ERA and 2 shutouts.

Ancestors:

Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey hit .345 with 12 RBI and 11 runs scored.

Heinrich "The German" Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Kahle hit .286 with 16 RBI and 17 runs scored. The German collected his 2000th hit on April 26th. Strangely enough, he did it off of fellow ancestor Fists Ubert.

Dummy Netsky, SP, Washington - Dummy was recently released by the Senators, and his career could be in jeopardy at age 31.

Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .404 with 19 RBI and 16 runs scored. Ditty also colected his 2000th hit on April 27th against young ancestor Whiskey Allen, Jr.

Harry "The Haymaker" Cohan, C, Chicago (N) - Harry hit .407 with 14 RBI and 11 runs scored.

Fists Ubert, SP, St. Louis (N) - Fists was 3-3 with a 3.29 ERA and a shutout in 6 starts.

John "Pops" Falise, RF, Philadelphia (N) - Pops missed April recovering from the broken wrist he suffered last June. He should be in the starting lineup on May 1st.

Jean-Francois "Flaky" Arsenault, SS, Chicago (A) - Flaky hit .426 with 9 RBI and 15 runs scored.

Genaro "Tito" Nunez, 2B, Boston (A) - Tito hit .281 with 6 RBI, 17 runs scored and 8 stolen bases.

"Nasty Ned" Fargo, SP, St. Louis (A) - Ned went 2-2 with a 4.78 ERA in 6 starts.

Will Miller, LF, Washington - Will hit .451 with 12 RBI, 21 runs scored and 7 stolen bases. The 25-year-old Miller is becoming one of the best pure hitters in the game, and he leads the early AL batting race with an impressive .351 average.

Thomas Strasser, CF, Cleveland - Thomas hit .264 with 10 RBI and 12 runs scored.

Chuck "Pudge" Harris, C, St. Louis (N) - Pudge hit .294 in 12 games before dislocating his shoulder on April 18th. He is not expected back until the end of May.

Ahrend "Professor" Nagel, SP, Philadelphia (A) - Nagel went 3-1 with a 2.81 ERA in 4 starts.

Horst "Harry" Nagel, C, Boston (N) - Harry hit .304 with 12 RBI and 14 runs scored.

Donald "Duckie" Andrew, 2B, Cincinnati - Duckie only got 2 at bats in April, serving as a backup infielder so far this season.

Ben "Rabbi" Baum, CF, Philadelphia (A) - Ben hit .268 with 9 RBI and 8 runs scored.

Bourbon Allen, SP, Boston (N) - Allen went 2-1 with a 3.97 ERA in 6 games.

Whiskey Allen, Jr., SP, Boston (N) - Junior went 1-3 with a 5.32 ERA in 6 starts. Even with Junior's struggles, the Braves have gotten off to their best start (12-12) in many years. Perhaps this bodes well for when Junior gets on track. It certainly looks like the team is finally progressing.

Sam Kass, CF, Pittsburgh - Sam began the season in the big leagues with the Pirates. He is serving as a backup in CF and at 1B. He hit just .207 in 29 at bats in April.

August "Fat Gus" Kahle, 3B, New York (A) - Fat Gus began the season in AA, where he has hit .244 so far. I believe he is the first ancestor we've ever had at 3B.

Salvatore "The Sicilian Saucer" Rossi, 1B, Philadelphia (A) - Rossi began the season in AA, where he hit .278 this month.

Levi "Tyke" Walls, SS, Chicago (N) - Levi began the season as the Cubs starting shortstop and leadoff hitter. Through April, he hit .330 with 15 RBI and 12 runs scored.

The Senators went 18-8 in May and maintained a lead over the AL. The White Sox went 16-12, slipping to 4 games back. The Indians went 17-12 to remain in 3rd place, despite falling to 5.5 games back.

Brooklyn struggled at 13-13 this month, but they were able to maintain their lead. However, the Giants are just 1 game back after going 15-12. Cincinnati went 18-11 to move into 3rd place, just 1.5 games back.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Michael Wrightson, 1B, Boston Red Sox - He hit .352 with 22 RBI, 15 runs scored and 3 home runs.

NL - John "Pops" Falise, RF, Philadelphia Phillies - He hit .379 with 29 RBI, 24 runs scored and 3 home runs.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Dan Twitty, Cleveland Indians - He was 5-1 with a 2.47 ERA and 1 shutout.

NL - Granville Galvan, Cincinnati Reds - He was 3-1 with a 1.03 ERA and 1 shutout.

Ancestors:

Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey hit .406 in just 7 games before pulling his achilles tendon on May 8th. He should be back around June 7th.

Heinrich "The German" Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Kahle hit .304 with 11 RBI and 16 runs scored.

Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .314 with 19 RBI, 16 runs scored and 2 home runs.

Harry "The Haymaker" Cohan, C, Chicago (N) - Harry hit .338 with 8 RBI and 12 runs scored.

Fists Ubert, SP, St. Louis (N) - Fists was 3-2 with a 5.59 ERA in 6 starts.

John "Pops" Falise, RF, Philadelphia (N) - Pops was named the AL BOTM (see above). He also won 2 AL POTW awards! Amazing since he played his first game on May 1st since late June of last season.

Jean-Francois "Flaky" Arsenault, SS, Chicago (A) - Flaky hit .356 with 9 RBI and 16 runs scored.

Genaro "Tito" Nunez, 2B, Boston (A) - Tito hit .384 with 13 RBI, 18 runs scored and 8 stolen bases.

"Nasty Ned" Fargo, SP, St. Louis (A) - Ned went 3-2 with a 3.06 ERA in 6 starts.

Thomas Strasser, CF, Cleveland - Thomas hit .320 with 21 RBI and 17 runs scored.

Chuck "Pudge" Harris, C, St. Louis (N) - Pudge returned to the lineup in time to play in 3 games this month. He hit .417 (5 for 12).

Ahrend "Professor" Nagel, SP, Philadelphia (A) - Nagel went 2-5 with a 7.46 ERA in 7 starts.

Horst "Harry" Nagel, C, Boston (N) - Harry hit .300 with 3 RBI and 12 runs scored.

Ben "Rabbi" Baum, CF, Philadelphia (A) - Ben hit .304 with 8 RBI and 20 runs scored.

Bourbon Allen, SP, Boston (N) - Allen went 2-3 with a 3.34 ERA in 6 games, including his first shutout of the season.

Whiskey Allen, Jr., SP, Boston (N) - Junior went 0-1 with a 12.71 ERA in 2 starts before rupturing an elbow ligament on May 7th. He is expected to return around June 6th. The good news is that prior to this injury, he got talent increases in avoiding hits and getting K's. That returns his avoiding hits talent to BRILLIANT, which is where it was before his broken hand last year.

August "Fat Gus" Kahle, 3B, New York (A) - Just prior to the end of May, Gus was promoted to AAA after hitting .281 in 196 AA at-bats.

Levi "Tyke" Walls, SS, Chicago (N) - Levi hit .308 with 12 RBI and 19 runs scored. He was also named the AL POTW on May 2nd.

Washington went 15-12 this month, which was good enough to not only maintain a lead over the AL, but to expand that lead to 6.5 games over the White Sox. The Red Sox are feeling the full effects of their owner's penny-pinching. Boston has the worst record in baseball, already 19 games out of first. However, despite New York's acquisitions from Boston, the Yankees are in 7th place and have never shown any marked improvement.

Cincinnati powered ahead of the NL with an amazing 22-5 June record. Brooklyn faded sharply from first to fifth after going just 8-19 in June. St. Louis moved into second place, but the Cardinals are already 8.5 games behind the surging Reds. Cincinnati, desperate to return to the World Series, has the best team ERA in baseball behind the always tough Granville Galvan (8-2, 2.43) and his fellow mound-mates. Unfortunately, the Reds lost their #2 pitcher Patrick Wirtz (11-6, 4.24 ERA) for the season with a torn tricep muscle. Wirtz also suffered an injury late last season that caused him to miss Cincinnati's first-ever World Series.

Batters of the Month:

AL - "Flaky" Arsenault, SS, Chicago White Sox - He hit .396 with 17 RBI and 22 runs scored.

NL - Rod "Cowboy" Glass, 3B, Philadelphia Phillies - He hit .392 with 24 RBI, 19 runs scored and 4 home runs. Despite having the worst record in the NL for most of the season, the Phillies amazingly have had all 3 NL BOTM's this season. As a result, they have moved into 6th Place even though they sport the worst team ERA in baseball.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Andrew Murphy, Chicago White Sox - He was 5-2 with a 2.03 ERA and 1 shutout. This was Murphy's 25th POTM Award in just 11 seasons!

NL - Jack LaCloeve, Cincinnati Reds - He was 6-1 with a 2.95 ERA and 2 shutouts.

Heinrich "The German" Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Kahle hit .264 with 16 RBI, 18 runs scored and 2 home runs.

Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .227 with 12 RBI, 11 runs scored and 2 home runs. He is currently playing with a pulled rib cage muscle.

Harry "The Haymaker" Cohan, C, Chicago (N) - Harry hit .458 with 13 RBI and 13 runs scored. He currently leads the NL with a .402 average.

Fists Ubert, SP, St. Louis (N) - Fists was 4-3 with a 2.29 ERA in 7 starts.

John "Pops" Falise, RF, Philadelphia (N) - Pops hit .330 with 23 RBI, 19 runs scored and 2 home runs. Despite missing the month of April, he is having one of the best seasons of his career so far.

Genaro "Tito" Nunez, 2B, Boston (A) - Tito hit just .247 with 13 RBI, 17 runs scored and 8 stolen bases.

"Nasty Ned" Fargo, SP, St. Louis (A) - Ned went 3-2 with a 6.04 ERA in 6 starts.

Chuck "Pudge" Harris, C, St. Louis (N) - Pudge got just 1 at-bat in June before fracturing his wrist. He is expected back on July 7th. His talent for hitting homers took a hit.

Ahrend "Professor" Nagel, SP, Philadelphia (A) - Nagel went 3-3 with a 3.80 ERA in 6 starts.

Horst "Harry" Nagel, C, Boston (N) - Harry hit .235 with 8 RBI and 9 runs scored.

Ben "Rabbi" Baum, CF, Philadelphia (A) - Ben hit .392 with 13 RBI and 17 runs scored.

Bourbon Allen, SP, Boston (N) - Allen went 2-1 with a 5.28 ERA in 6 games.

Whiskey Allen, Jr., SP, Boston (N) - Junior returned from his injury and went 5-2 with a 2.92 ERA in 5 starts.

Salvatore "The Sicilian Saucer" Rossi, 1B, Philadelphia (A) - Sal was promoted to the majors this month, hitting .278 (10 for 36) with 9 RBI in limited action as the team's primary backup at C and 1B.

Levi "Tyke" Walls, SS, Chicago (N) - Levi continues to perform as the top rookie in baseball, hitting .365 this month with 12 RBI, 18 runs scored and 10 stolen bases.

Washington went just 12-13 in July, slipping back to the pack. The White Sox went 15-11, while Cleveland went 16-9. The Indians moved into 2nd place and are just 3 games back.

Cincinnati went 12-14 this month but managed to stay ahead of the rest of the league thanks to a large 8.5 game cushion they gave themselves in June. The Giants went 16-10 and pulled to within 5 games of the Reds. The Cardinals are 6 games back, while the Cubs, who lost starter Hugh Tiedt for 6 weeks, are 8 games out.

Batters of the Month:

AL - "Meatball" McDuffey, LF, New York Yankees - He hit .415 with 17 RBI and 22 runs scored.

NL - Whitey Kohse, SS, New York Giants - He hit .432 with 18 RBI and 22 runs scored.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Abe Swift, Detroit Tigers - He was 5-0 with a 1.00 ERA and 2 shutouts.

NL - Collin Carr, New York Giants - He was 6-0 with a 2.14 ERA.

Chuck "Pudge" Harris, C, St. Louis (N) - Pudge played in 15 games this month, hitting .283. If he can stay healthy, he should put together the best season of his career at age 25. He is slowly becoming potentially one of the better catchers in the NL.

Ahrend "Professor" Nagel, SP, Philadelphia (A) - Nagel went 2-5 with a 7.23 ERA in 7 starts.

Horst "Harry" Nagel, C, Boston (N) - Harry hit .268 with 11 RBI and 12 runs scored.

Bourbon Allen, SP, Boston (N) - Allen went 2-3 with a 4.33 ERA in 5 games.

Whiskey Allen, Jr., SP, Boston (N) - Junior went 1-1 with a 3.75 ERA in 4 starts. However, on July 27th, he suffered an elbow injury that could cause him to miss the entire month of August. This certainly is an injury-prone family.

Levi "Tyke" Walls, SS, Chicago (N) - Levi hit .351 with 11 RBI, 19 runs scored and 9 stolen bases.

where is duckie?

Since the league website isn't updated, I have no idea what happed to Ducky Andrew of the Reds--since his broken skull, he hasn't been the player he was before, but I'd like to know where he is and how he's doing.

This has got to be one of, if not thee, greatest dynasty thread of all time. I haven't been posting much in it lately but I definitely follow good ole Fists Ubert! So far the best SP ancestor in the game.

I am also hoping that the plan is still to turn it into an online league in the future!

Thanks man, great job!

Since there are so many new ancestors joining the league, I decided a few seasons back that I'd only post when a player is a regular starter or has some significant news happen to him... BUT, I also promised that at a minimum, every player would have a post after April & at the end of the season...

The only reason for this is the fact that I'll have 30-something ancestors soon & the number will grow significantly throughout the 1930's... I'd like to post on everyone, but I decided to cut out news on players who are simply backup catchers, etc at the present time, but report on them when anything happens like an injury or promotion...

Also, I wanted to update the web pages last night but couldn't... however, they are fully updated now!

He's still serving as the primary backup at 2B and SS... He hit .476 (10 for 21) in July with 4 SB... Unfortunately for him, he's stuck behind solid starters at both 2B and SS...

Thanks again for the compliment... I'm really enjoying this league... My only regret is that I didn't use Cato's history utility early on... I kick myself for that almost daily...

As for turning this into an online league, yes, I still hope to do that... The only thing is, I can't decide if I should do it post-WWII like I originally planned or wait until the 70's or 80's...

The reason I'm unsure is, I don't want to start the league in the 40's if it'll take 15 yrs (real time) to get to the 80's/90's when many of us will debut as rookies ourselves... On the other hand, starting it earlier would allow us to manage our own ancestors...

I'm stuck... If anyone has an opinion on this matter, please let me know...

I tend to lean toward post-WWII myself as well. It's more in keeping with the idea of watching your ancestors play baseball. And I have to admit, the idea of potentially managing my father and grandfather sounds like loads of fun.

Harry Cohan is hovering around .400 (.399 now) again. Has any player ever batted .400+ 2 seasons in their career?

I of course mean in the TWBL - not IRL.

No... it's only been done 5 times... in the AL by Whiskey Allen, Genaro Nunez & Will Miller... in the NL by Woody Woodson & Harry Cohan...

Washington went 17-13 in August and remained in first place in the AL. Cleveland slumped and fell 7 games back, but the White Sox are just 4 games back with 4 weeks left.

The Reds were just 13-13 this month, but they maintained a lead over the NL. That lead was 8.5 games at the end of June, but it has now shrunk to just 2 games over the Giants. The Reds lost their top starter, Granville Galvan, near the end of August and he could miss all of September.

AL - Jason Schaefer, Philadelphia Athletics - He was 5-1 with a 1.33 ERA and 1 shutout.

NL - John Harris, Chicago Cubs - He was 4-1 with a 1.36 ERA and 3 shutouts!

Neither Chicago nor Cleveland were able to provide enough of a challenge to Washington as the Senators took the AL pennant with a week left in the season. Washington won 2-of-3 games against the White Sox and Indians early in the month to distance themselves. However, they lost 7 of their last 9 games of the season, including a 3-game sweep by Cleveland, but by then it was too late. Still it is a sad way to enter the franchise's first World Series since 1913.

The NL pennant went down to the final day of the season. Cincinnati led the league for much of the season, but their 8.5 game lead at the end of June slowly dwindled as the weeks went by. The Reds were playing well until a sweep by Brooklyn on September 10-12. After that they lost 8 of their next 10 games including a sweep by the lowly Phillies. By that time, the Giants had snuck into first by a game. New York had struggles of their own this month, but they played much better than the Reds and by the time the final series of the season arrived, all they had to do was win. The Giants did that by taking 2-of-3 from the Phillies and winning the pennant by 1 game. Cincinnati, ever the bride's maid, finished in 2nd place for the 5th time in 12 seasons.

Code:
American League Standings

Washington 86 68 .558 -
Cleveland 84 70 .545 2.0
Chicago (A) 83 71 .539 3.0
St. Louis (A) 80 74 .519 6.0
Philadelphia (A) 76 78 .494 10.0
New York (A) 74 80 .481 12.0
Detroit 70 84 .455 16.0
Boston (A) 63 91 .409 23.0

National League Standings

New York (N) 88 66 .571 -
Cincinnati 87 67 .565 1.0
St. Louis (N) 84 70 .545 4.0
Chicago (N) 80 74 .519 8.0
Pittsburgh 75 79 .487 13.0
Brooklyn 74 80 .481 14.0
Philadelphia (N) 67 87 .435 21.0
Boston (N) 61 93 .396 27.0

World Series

The Senators are powered by offense. They have a robust .300 team batting average, the best in the majors. They also draw a lot of walks and steal plenty of bases. On the other hand, their pitching staff has actually been one of the most inconsistent in the league. Their 4.74 team ERA is among the worst around. They allow almost no home runs, however, and are around the middle of the pack in allowing walks. Their three starting pitchers, especially team ace "Check Mate" Parkhill, are very capable pitchers, but as I said, they have been inconsistent.

The Giants have the 2nd best team batting average (.296) in baseball and sport the 3rd best team ERA (3.89). The offense hit the most home runs in the league and scored the 2nd most runs. Their pitchers have the 3rd lowest opponents batting average, allowed the 3rd fewest runs and 4th fewest walks. The staff is anchored by two potential aces, Michael McAinsh (11-7, 2.53 ERA) and "Junkyard" Franklin (26-9, 3.04 ERA). Every starter on their offense hit .293 or better this season, and they sport two sluggers among the NL leaders in home runs and RBI - first baseman Jared Jarry (9 HR, 102 RBI) and centerfielder Campbell Ditty (10 HR, 100 RBI).

My Prediction: The Senators have a strong team, but they struggled in September, while the Giants began to heat up. If Washington's pitchers can pitch up to their capabilities, this series could go a long way. However, with their inconsistencies and New York's potency, I expect the Giants to win in 7 games (9 game series).
