Stateline, Nevada - Sugar Ray Robinson, 146 pounds of New York dynamite, demonstrated to Nevada fans just why he is considered pound-for-pound the best in the business as he systemically took middleweight Carl Daniels apart before blasting him out last night.

Robinson, tuning up for his welterweight championship contest with Ike Quartey, led all the way as Daniels refused to wilt under the heavy barrages.

Daniels, ranked #7 by the IBF in the 160-pound division managed to absorb the punishment better earlier on as he kept close to Robinson, but as the contest went on so did the distance between the pair - and with space to jab and move, Robinson set up many of his famous whirlwind flash attacks.

Back in his dressing room after the contest Robinson seemed pleased with his night's work.

"That's just what I needed. Maybe another one or two tune-ups and I'll be ready to go."

Ray Robinson UD 10 Raul Frank




Coachella, California - Sugar Ray Robinson pounded out a unanimous decision 10-round decision over Raul Frank, a light middleweight, in a tune-up for his welterweight title fight.

The Harlem Hurricane was forced onto the defensive early as his larger opponent tried to make the fight rough-and-tumble.

Frank was at his best in rounds five and eight, as he pushed the champion back and caught him with some good blows to the head.

There were no knockdowns.

Robinson swept the cards, 100-90, 100-89, 100-89.

The beating Frank endured over the final three minutes drew a 10-8 on all three judges cards.

Robinson Beats Quartey




Sugar Ray Robinson retained his welterweight titles last night by scoring a 10-round technical knockout over Ike Quartey; with a cut above the eye so severe the challenger was unable to continue.

If there was any doubt whether Robinson is the best at 147-pounds, he erased any such notion with his clear cut beating of the best contender in the division.

Quartey made for a spirited challenger, but was only given one round by each of the judges.

A hard right from the champion put Quartey down for eight in the ninth and a left hook on the bell dropped him for a second time.

Sugar Ray Robinson wants to unify the welterweight division, and hopes early next year it will finally happen.

"If Felix Trinidad can still make the weight, he should sign the contract."

Trinidad Losing Patience




"Throughout this whole process I have remained patient, but at this point I am angry that Robinson is trying to blame me for the fight not happening when the blame is on him," Felix Trinidad said.

Trinidad's promoter Don King claimed Robinson did not actually want the fight despite his public declarations.

George Gainford, trainer of Sugar Ray Robinson spoke to The New York Times yesterday afternoon and spent much of that time discussing Robinson's immediate future.

"Trinidad talks about patience. Robinson is always waiting on opponents. He waited on Whitaker, he waited on De La Hoya and now he's waiting on Trinidad.

We can't force Trinidad into the ring. We can only keep making big, very big offers, more than he's ever made before or can make with anyone else."

Robinson - Trinidad Issue




The proposed fight between Sugar Ray Robinson and Felix Trinidad Jr has been thrown into jeopardy after the American fighter's camp demanded that both fighters weigh-in at midday on the day of the fight.

Robinson's camp insisted the fight would not happen if Trinidad did not agree to the weight agreement, saying: "This fight is to prove whose the best at one-four-seven in the world, not one-five-five."

Trinidad's promoter, Don King, said all other issues have been agreed upon. "There is good news. We have agreed on all the other points."

With only weeks left in 1998, pound-for-pound king Sugar Ray Robinson has signed to meet the NABF & USBA middleweight title holder Antwun Echols.

The contest is scheduled to co-headline a card on January 16 at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas for promoter Matt Tinley. Co-headlining is Mike Tyson, who makes his return to the ring against Frans Botha after his nineteen month suspension.

Should Robinson win the contest he is expected to be placed as the organisation's mandatory challenger to the winner of the upcoming IBF middleweight title rematch between Bernard Hopkins and Robert Allen.

Boston, Massachusetts - Lionel Ortiz was totally outclassed tonight as he was dropped five times and took a tremendous beating before the referee eventually stopped it in the tenth.

Robinson told those ringside that Ortiz was the most determined opponent he's ever gotten into the ring with.

"Any time I need some good one-sixty-pounds sparring, I think he's the man I need."

WBC Want Defense




In what must be becoming familiar news to Sugar Ray Robinson, he has been told to agree terms with a mandatory challenger.

This time it is the World Boxing Council, and the challenger is James Page.

Issuing a statement, the WBC said they expected their champion to agree terms no later than February 1st 1999 for a title defense.

Robinson Only Human




Antwun Echols last night showed that Sugar Ray Robinson is only human.

Yes he had around 12 pounds on the welterweight champion, yes he got knocked down, yes he lost his titles, and yes he only took a few rounds - but he put Robinson under plenty of pressure, roughed him up, made him fight defensively and even marked up the pound-for-pound king.

When asked in the immediate aftermath of the contest whether he intended to challenge IBF middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins, Robinson said, "We're negotiating with several parties right now, hopefully we'll have something ready for May."

Hopkins Open To Fight




"I don't know Robinson personally but from what I do know, like me he's mastered his craft, walks around at the right weight, we both could go back to weighing in the same day of the fight."

Hopkins in the mean time is scheduled to meet Robert Allen in a rematch of their bizarre August no-contest meeting, after which he will be able to make a voluntary defense.

Robinson would definitely go into it as the underdog, and though he's pushed towards it I'm not too confident that it's the most logical fight out there.

The WBC champion Sugar Ray Robinson has announced that he has signed to face mandatory challenger James Page in a February defense of his title.

Their first meeting back in June of 1996 ended in a first round knockout victory for Robinson.

Sugar Ray Robinson won his 79th straight professional fight last night when he stopped challenger James Page in the fifth round in a title defense at Madison Square Garden, New York.

Robinson who defended his portion of the welterweight championship, said in his dressing room after the contest.

"I'd like to be champion of the entire of the world."

To achieve his goal, he needs Felix Trinidad to meet him in the ring.

"If Trinidad will fight me, we can make a deal."
