Pen ERA: 2.48 (1st)
Def Eff: .713 (1st)

Game 93:
Virginia Beach 1, Norfolk 16
Arturo Ramirez (13-2) continues to put together a solid rookie season, going 7 innings, allowing 6 hits and striking out 7. The Cav's pounded out 21 hits, with Roberto Perez and Mike Ford collecting 4 each. King Brock and Augusto Rodriquez had 3 each. Augusto drove in a team high 6 with 2 doubles. Jeff Lewis went deep (18) and drove in 2. Perez added 3 RBI's.

Game 94:
Virginia Beach 3, Norfolk 4
Shawn Brock (ND) continued his winless streak with another nice performance. Brock went 6.1 innings, allowing 6 hits and 3 runs (1 ER), he struck out 8. Will Rose (6-1) pitched the 8th and Dalton Whitaker collected the save (24) throwing the 9th. Seven different Cav's had hits, the biggest of them all was a Mauro Candelaria 2-run HR (4).

Hit Streak News: Kent Davis reaches the 20 game plateau, with a 1-4 day.

Game 95:
Norfolk 3, Washington 8
Ron Reilly (10-4) got hit hard, allowing 10 hits over 5.2 innings and giving up 6 runs. The offense was quiet with 5 singles. Kent Davis and Jeff Lewis continued their hit streaks. Davis and Roberto Perez each had n RBI.

Game 96:
Norfolk 9, Washington 10
Miguel Contreras (ND) had an off day, giving up 11 hits and 6 runs over 4.2 innings. The bullpen kept the game close as the offense fought back, but Dalton Whitaker blew the save in the 9th (2-5), his first blown save of the season, giving up 3 runs on 3 hits, including a walk-off 3-run HR. Mike Ford and Jeff Lewis lead the offense with 3 hits a piece. Bryan O'Neil, Mike Ford, Ed Duke added 2 RBI's each. Duke (19) and Kent Davis (3) went deep.

Injury News: Mauro Candelaria was taken off the field with the help of some teammates after making a play in RF in the first inning. The diagnosis isn't pretty, as Mauro will be out 3 months, most likely missing the playoffs. On the season Mauro was hitting .301-4-53.

Transactions: Mauro Candelaria has been placed on the 15-day DL and the Cavaliers have purchased the contract of Byung-hyun Chong. Chong will step in a play LF, moving Jeff Lewis to RF. Chong was tearing it up in AAA hitting .383-9-31 in 44 games.

Game 97:
Norfolk 7, Washington 1
Jose Matos (15-2) went 6.2 innings allowing 6 hits and no runs. Derek Carter went the final 2.1 allowing 3 hits and 1 run. The offense woke up a little bit with 16 hits. Jesus Rivera lead the way 4 hits (all doubles) and 3 runs. Augusto Rodriquez added 3 hits and 4 RBI's. Mike Ford added 3 hits, and Kent Davis had 2.

Game 98:
Norfolk 11, Washington 2
Arturo Ramirez (14-2) went 6 solid innings, allowing 5 hits and 1 run. Ivan Pindea and Ron Harris finished the game off. Another double-digit hit day by the Cav's. With Ed Duke and Mike Ford collecting 3 each. Jesus Rivera, Jeff Lewis, King Brock and Ed Duke all drove in 2. Duke (20), Lewis (19) and Rivera (10) all went deep. Byung-Hyun Chong went 2-5 in is big league debut.

Hit Streak News: With a 3rd inning single, Jeff Lewis extended his season-long hitting streak to 35 games. The second longest evern in the DBL.

Injury News: Ivan Pineda was pulled from the game after 26 pitches. It didn't look pretty, and we are anxiously awaiting the diagnosis. Pineda was 1-0 with a 3.15 ERA so far this season.

Game 99:
Baltimore 9, Norfolk 11
Shawn Brock (ND) got roughed up giving up 7 hits and 8 runs (5 ER) over 4 innings. Derek Carter (1-0) pitched 2 innings of relief to get the win. Dalton Whitaker threw the 9th for the save (25). Four Cav's had 2 hits, Ed Duke, Roberto Perez, Mike Ford and Byung-hyun Chong. Ford added 4 RBI's and Perez added a HR (15) and 3 RBI's, Chong also drove in 2.

Around the League:
  • Ralph Roberts of the Christiana Blue Hens will miss the next 4 months with a partially torn labrum. Since being called up, the 22 year old, has started 8 games and has posted a 1-3 record with a 5.24 ERA.
  • Edward Adams a lightly used MR for the Annapolis Admirals will miss the next 4-5 months with a torn labrum. In 13 games he was 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA.
  • Marvin Martin, the Washington Senators starting Catcher, will miss 4 weeks with a knee sprain. Martin is hitting .321-15-57 on the season.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Jake Judkins, Lewes Braves, 12-24 3 HR's 12 RBI.
MarVa: Mike Ford, Norfolk Cavaliers, 17-30 0 HR's 7 RBI's

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (150.6)
2) Dover Generals (113.7)
3) Annapolis Admirals (105.5)
4) Milton Brewers (102.5)
5) Lewes Braves (102.2)

GM Notes: Only one thing is really going to be able to bring us down at the rate we have been playing, and that is injuries. Mauro Candelaria is out for the 2nd time this year and will miss the rest of the season, Derek Campbell missed 2 weeks, now Pindea is headed to the DL. It looks like Mike Ford and King Brock will be our 1B the rest of the way... I just have to think, was it my fault that Mauro got hurt? Playing RF? He is our first-bagger. maybe I made a mistake. Hopefully Ford continues to hit the ball, we will need him, but our D is definitely going to suffer... Pitching continues to carry us, but our offense is firing on all cylinders. I don't remember a time when this team was #2 in HR's or #1 in batting Avg. With Duke, Brock, Davis, Lewis, Perez and Ford all hitting .300 plus it really helps. Getting Campbell back gives us some more power, we just need to stay healthy with 63 games to go.

Week 18

Current Week: 5-1 (84-21 - GB (+30))
Next Week: 1 @ Salisbury Ports, 4 @ Ellicott City Express, 2 vs Richmond Cardinals
Power Ranking: 1
Fan Interest: 85 (+1)
Owners Mood: Ecstatic

Runs Scored: 687 (1st)
Avg: .311 (1st)
Runs Against: 314 (1st)
Starters ERA: 2.77 (1st)
Pen ERA: 2.73 (1st)
Def Eff: .715 (1st)

Transactions: Derek Campbell has been activated from the DL and is expected to play today versus Baltimore. Ivan Pindea was placed on the 15-day DL, and Bryan O'Neil was pulled off of Waivers and placed back on the Cav's roster. We will go with 11 pitches for now, with Ron Harris, Derek Carter, Jamie King and Elmer Hawkins needed to pick up the slack with Pineda out... Campbell with take over in LF, moving Chong to the bench. Chong was 4-10 so far this season will see more AB's, but not as a starter. O'Neil will be our 5th out-fielder. His status on the roster is temporary, if we need more pitching or another infielder he will be moved. Just have to make due with what we have. Losing Mauro Candelaria is a big blow.

Game 100:
Baltimore 10, Norfolk 8
Ron Reilly (ND) went 6 innings, but got hit hard when he came out for the 7th, for the game he gave up 6 runs (4 in the 7th) on 6 hits. Jamie King took the loss, giving up a run. Will Rose finished off the game going 3 innings, allowing 2 more runs. The Cav's were lead by Roberto Perez who had 5 hits adn 2 runs. Jeff Lewis added 3 hits and Mike Ford added 2 hits and 3 RBI's. Ford (2), Ed Duke (21) and Jesus Rivera (11) all had HR's.

Injury News: Ivan Pineda was diagnosed with a torn flexor tendon in his elbow and will miss about 7 months. He, as with most of my relivers this season, wasn't used much, pitching in 9 games posting a 1-0 record with a 3.15 ERA and 2 Saves... Right now I am going with 11 pitchers, I am leaning towards bringing another up, but I will see how it goes.

Game 101:
Baltimore 0, Norfolk 2
Miguel Contreras (13-1) looked as good as every going 7.1 innings, allowing 4 hits and striking out 12. Dalton Whitaker went the 9th for the save (26). The offense wasn't great, but it got 2 runs across the plate, with Kent Davis and King Brock leading the way with 2 hits each. Roberto Perez and Jeff Lewis each had an RBI.

Hitting Streak Update: Jeff Lewis had his hit streak stopped today. Jeff went 0-3 ending his 36 game streak, the 2nd longest in DBL history.

Game 102:
Baltimore 5, Norfolk 8
Jose Matos (16-2) went 6.1 innings, allowing 8 hits and 4 runs. Dalton Whitaker pitched the 9th for the save (27). Mike Ford lead the offense going 3-4 with 2 runs and 2 RBI, including a HR (3). Jeff Lewis added 2 hits.

Game 103:
Norfolk 6, Salisbury 1
Arturo Ramirez (15-2) went 8 innings, allowing 3 hits and 1 run, to continue his remarkale freshman season. Kent Davis had 2 hits and 2 runs, Roberto Perez had 2 hits and 2 RBI's, Derek Campbell added 2 RBI's and Ed Duke went deep (22).

Game 104:
Norfolk 9, Salisbury 7
Shawn Brock (11-3) ended his 6 game winless streak (0-2) with another solid performance, going 7.1 innings, allowing 7 hits and 3 runs. Will Rose gave up 4 runs in 1 inning of work, but Dalton Whitaker was able to close the door (28). Jeff Lewis lead the way with 3 hits, 3 Runs and 2 RBI's, including a HR (20). King Brock added 2 hits and 3 RBI's, with a HR (17) and Mike Ford hit a 3-run HR (4).

Hitting Streak Update: Kent Davis went 0-3 to end his hitting spree, at 28 games. He is currently hitting .402 on the season.

Game 105:
Norfolk 9, Salisbury 1
Ron Reilly (11-4) went 8.2 innings, throwing 122 pitches, allowing 4 hits and 1 run, while striking out 10. Jeff Lewis lead the offense with a 4-5 day, scoring 4 times and driving in 3, including a HR (21). King Brock and Jesus Rivera each had 3 hits. Roberto Perez and Kent Davis added 2. Rivera and Perez drove in 2.

Around the League:
  • In a shocking deal the Chesapeake Blue Crabs traded away their 28 year old ace for 3 prospects. Moran was due about 9 million next season. He is a 2-time 20 game winner, and possibly the best lefty in the game. He was 8-4 2.48 with the Blue Crabs this season.
  • Grant Wright of the Lewes Braves is out 3 weeks with a strained oblique. Write was hitting .291-3-24 at the time of the injury.
  • The Baltimore Barons sent Tony Soto the Milton Brewers for a 4* starting pitcher. Soto was hitting .253-8-28 at the time of the deal.
  • The Seaford Blue Jays traded closer Ken Minahan to the Wilmington Iron Pigs in return for 3 prospects. A deal that shows the Blue Jays are looking to the future.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Andy Kohl, Dover Generals, 13-22 2 HR's, 7 RBI's
MarVa: Jack Dooley, Baltimore Barons, 11-23 4 HR's, 8 RBI's

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (155.0)
2) Dover Generals (119.1)
3) Georgetown Sixteens (115.1)
4) Milton Brewers (106.7)
5) Annapolis Admirals (106.6)

GM Notes: Derek Campbell and Augusto Rodriquez had small DTD injuries. I think I am going to get BH Chong more games, spelling DC for a while, seems like he is a little injury prone right now... Ed Duke is having an career year, hopefully this isn't a fluke and will be a sign of goo things to come. He would be a nice one to sign to an extension, but he isn't arbitration eligible yet, so thats a plus. I am guessing by that time I will have enough payroll room cleared. Well maybe, lol... Mike Ford is hitting enough to make us not miss Mauro as much but his -1.1 ZR vs Mauro's 3.8 is quite a swing. With him at first our ERA's have gone up, coincidence?... Jose Matos is making 11.5 million this season, that goes up to 14.5 next year, then he will be a free-agent. not sure I will be able to work out an extension with him, financially I can't afford it. That means Derek Campbell and Jose Matos may end up being moved this off-season. Matos will be a bigger blow, but both will be pretty big losses. Not to mention that both of them are extremely popular...

I did reach out to Dover and they now have the budget room to trade for Campbell, but they have no interest in giving me Claude Bond for Campbell straight up. They asked for King Brock or Arturo Ramirez. I laughed and moved on. Campbell will be with us till through the end of the season, with Candelaria out, it only makes sense now. Trade deadline is in 2 days.

Random Stat of the week:
Career Wins
1) Miguel Contreras - 109 (Age: 30)
2) Marcos Estrada - 101 (Age: 30)
3) Jose Matos - 98 (Age: 31)
4) Don Sweetapple - 94 (Age: 33)
They are the only 4 over 90. There are 8 with between 81-86, however.

July in Review

Players of the Month:
Delaware Conference:

Batter of the Month: Andy Kohl, Dover Generals
Kohl Awarded July's DE Conf Top Bat Prize: One of the more consistent batters in July, Dover catcher Andy Kohl grabbed Delaware Conference Batter of the Month honors by hitting .339 with 39 hits in 115 at-bats. He racked up 13 home runs and 32 RBIs, scored 27 runs. Thus far this season in 95 games Kohl is batting .316 with 36 home runs, 101 RBIs and 74 runs scored. He has 122 hits in 386 at-bats.

Pitcher of the Month: Jorge Moran, Milton Brewers
July's Best Starter Named in DE Conf: Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Jorge Morán still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in July. The 28-year-old starter for Milton was named Delaware Conference Pitcher of the Month earlier today. He collected 4 wins and no losses with 36 strikeouts in his 6 starts, putting up a fine 1.99 ERA in 45.1 innings of work. To date this season, Morán has a record of 9 wins and 4 losses and a 2.47 ERA. He has appeared in 22 games and struck out 126 in 156.2 innings.

He only had 2 starts in the DE Conference, doesn't seem fair that his 4 in the MarVa Conference got him the award.

Rookie of the Month: Jackson Hodge, New Castle Colonials
DE Conf Selects Rookie Star of the Month: Jackson Hodge is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Delaware Conference Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers. In July the New Castle hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .300 average with 33 hits, 3 home runs and 14 RBIs. For the year Hodge is batting .246 with 8 home runs.

MarVa Conference:

Batter of the Month: Jeff Lewis, Norfolk Cavaliers
Norfolk's Lewis MV Conf #1 Batter in July: Jeff Lewis got another reason to celebrate today as he followed up a great month of July at the plate by winning the MarVa Conference Batter of the Month Award. During the month, the Norfolk right fielder hit .435 with 7 home runs, 28 RBIs and 30 runs scored. This season Lewis has hit at a .372 clip and produced 85 RBI, 21 home runs and 96 runs.

Pitcher of the Month: Jose Matos, Norfolk Cavaliers
Matos Takes MV Conf Top Starter Trophy: José Matos's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 6-0 in July, the 31-year-old Norfolk hurler has been named MarVa Conference Pitcher of the Month. He fanned 37 in 42 innings, logged an ERA of 2.14 and allowed opponents to hit .224 against him. So far this season Matos has a 17-2 record with a 2.03 ERA.

Rookie of the Month: Mike Ford, Norfolk Cavaliers
MarVa Conference Names Rookie of Month: Mike Ford's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Norfolk first baseman has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month. In July he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award. During the month he hit .400 with 8 doubles, no triples and 3 home runs. Ford also scored 26 times and drove in 25 runs. This season Ford has delivered 66 hits in 173 at-bats for a .382 average with 4 home runs. He is getting on base at a .422 clip and his totals also include 32 RBIs and 32 runs scored. This year Ford has played in 42 games.

We swept the awards this month, doesn't happen that often, but its pretty cool to see...

League Leaders (as of August 1st, 2018)
Delaware Division:

AVG: Jake Judkins (Lewes Braves) .320*
HR: Andy Kohl (Dover Generals) 36
RBI: Andy Kohl (Dover Generals) 101
SB: Pedro Galavan (Dover Generals) 38 (missed July w/ injury)

Andy Kohl has to be the front runner for Silver Slugger award. Leading the league in HR, RBI, RUns, TB, 2nd in WAR.

ERA: Cho-Yeong An (Dover Generals) 2.03*
W: Anthony Dundee (Georgetown Sixteens) 16
K: Matt Hollis (New Castle Colonials) 164*
SV(t): Byran Cooper (Georgetown Sixteens) 27*
SV(t): Michael Willard (Wilmington Iron Pigs) 27*

Marva Division:
AVG: Kent Davis (Norfolk Cavaliers) .400
HR: Abraham Thomas (Washington Senators) 38
RBI: Francisco Reyes (Ocean City Tourists) 106
SB: Kent Davis (Norfolk Cavaliers) 41*

ERA: Jose Matos (Norfolk Cavaliers) 2.03*
W: Jose Matos (Norfolk Cavaliers) 17
K: Miguel Contreras (Norfolk Cavaliers) 143*
SV(t): Dalton Whitaker (Norfolk Cavaliers) 29
SV(t): Will Wilson (Baltimore Barons) 29*

The Generals are starting to pull away with a 7 game lead over 2nd place Georgetown. The Brewers made some trades to try to make a run, but at 10 games back it might be tough. The Braves have had too many injuries for the 2nd year in a row, and at 10 games back they might be too far out. Look for the Brewers to make a run, but the Generals are clearly the top of the pack here.

The Cololials are playing well, even with Peters having an off-season (.290-23-51), so if he warms up like the 3x MVP can watch out. The Clippers and Iron Pigs are hanging around and arne't out of it yet. This division is pretty much up in the air. As all three teams have a shot to take home the crown.

Tha Admirals hold a 6 game lead over the Barons, as the Barons are starting to charge. The Barons have made some additions to their roster over the past month, but will it be enough? The Barons went 19-10 in July so if they can keep it up they better watch out in Annapolis.

The Cavaliers are in the midst of a magical season and hold a 30 game lead and a magic number of 26. They should clinch before Sept first which will give us time to focus on some younger guys and get healhty and be ready for a 3 peat...

Ex-Cavaliers of Interest:
Don Sweetapple: 11-10 3.91, 24 GS, 124 K's, 3.2 WAR
Pablo Freitas: 78 G, .280-15-43, 2.6 WAR, #5 Hitter
Sun Ho: (AAA) 20 G, 34.2 IP, 1-1 6.24, -0.1 WAR
Jose Rodriquez: (AAA) .297-15-52, 0.8 WAR (demoted after 10 games .182-2-8)
Julio Romero: 97 G, .231-8-26, 0.1 WAR, 24.3 CS%
Gilberto Ramos: (A) .264-3-42 (Property of Seaford Blue Jays)
Joe Gould: 24 G / 20 GS, 8-7 4.53 1.10 WHIP, 2.1 WAR
Adrian Otero: 18 GS, 2-9 4.73 1.38 WHIP, 0.3 WAR
Jose Escamilla: 6 G, 4-17 .235 0.1 WAR. (since trade, strained his ACL on DL)

Norfolk Recap

Can we keep it up and keep winning 20 games a month? Is that possible? I am still not sure how this team is playing so well, but I am not going to complain.
April: 21-4
May: 21-7
June: 20-5
July: 23-6

And we are just about a perfect split betwen home and away. At home we are 42-10 and on the road we are 43-12. The thing that suprises me the most is that we are #1 in just about every offensive category. I alway s tried to build my teams around pitching defense, not that I didn't have the ability to aquire some offenisve studs, but to have an offense playing this good has been extremely surprising to me...

Arturo Ramirez is having a lights out rookie season, even if he got no recognition for last month when he went 5-0 in 5 GS with a 0.55 ERA. He has throwing 138 innings, this season, his career high in the minros was 175. I wonder if I will see tiring in him? Injury? Concern is starting to creep up on me...

Eight of the starting 9 hit over .291, 7 over .318. This offense has just been crazy. King Brock drove in 33, Jeff Lewis and Roberto Perez added 28. Ed Duke hit 8 HR's and Jeff lewis had 7. Mike Ford and Jeff Lewis each had 50 hits for July. They won't be able to keep that up, or I doubt it at least, so when we start not hitting that crazy whats going to happen? Things are clicking on the offensive side in Norfolk.

The bullpen was quite a bit this month compared to past months, and they are still #1 in ERA, but they didn't have a good month at all. King, Hawkins and Rose all had ERAs oer 4.15. Dalton and Ron Harris were the saviors this month. Whitaker did blow his first save of the season this month however, he is still 29 out of 30.

Matos was 6-0, Ramirez went 5-0 and Contreras went 3-1 to lead the starts. All of them performed really well this past month, Shawn Brock had an odd month in 6 GS, he went 1-1 with a 3.66 ERA. Just couldn't get the runs when needed. The big difference with this staff than staff's from the past are the lack of complete games, even though they all have 11+ stamina, we didn't have any that month. Reilly and Brock are the innings eaters in this bunch and it surprises me when we go the month without anny.

Around the Minors:
Yokohama (AAA) 48-54 -13 GB (had an awufl July)
Vaughn Griffith 10-5 4.34, will see some time in Sept with us.
Javier Janchez .234-6-21 and he took a power rating hit. Maybe he isn't the star I thought?
Cody Johnson .363-11.53 is one of those 4A players. He hasn't hit over .184 for us in 3 years, but tears it up in AAA.
Sergio Galvez .342-3-9, he should see some time in Sept. And next year.

New Orleans (AA) 54-53 -6 GB
Ben Sanford 22 SV, 2.31 ERA. His Control ratings may keep him down. 1.41 WHIP. 30 BB/46.2 IP
Paul Brown 8-7 4.64 1.54 WHIP, as he control rating comes up he will only get better. If it gets to 10 (8/14 currently) he will be ready.
Ramon Granados .314-12-61, #23 prospect, having a solid season. May head up to AAA soon.
Mario Reyes is hitting .273-1-11 since coming over in 17 games. The sky is the talen if he can develop.

San Jose (A) 62-45 -3 GB
Francisco Gallegos .314-13-60 slumping some, but still showing off his raw power.
Chris Brownell 5-1 2.36, started 17 games, hasn't pitched more than 4 innings last 8.
Bernardo Velez .280-4-23 having a solid season.
Tom Dundee has warmed back up, starting to show more power. .242-3-17 (.264-3-16 w/ Jacksonville)
Vernon Tilly .243-1-11 adjusting well, but has slumped of late.

Jacksonville (A) 39-68 34 GB
Mike Heathcote in 9 GS, he is 4-3 2.76. Control is the key for him. 1.21 WHIP 7/11 Control rating.
Raul Rubio .286-13-48 has cooled off a bit, but is still showing some impressive numbers.

Def Eff: .712 (1st)

Game 106:
Norfolk 4, Salisbury 6
Miguel Contreras (13-6) took the loss, going 7.2 innings, allowing 9 hits and 6 runs (5). He did strike out 8. The offense had 9 hits, 8 of them singles, with Ed Duke's HR (23) the only XB hit. Jeff Lewis and Mike Ford each had 2 hits.

Game 107:
Norfolk 6, Ellicot City 3
Jose Matos (17-2) threw 8 innings of 6 hit ball, allowing just 2 runs. BH Chong lead the offense going 2-3 with 3 RBI's, including his first big-league HR (1). Mike Ford added 2 hits, and Roberto Perez hit a solo-HR (16).

Arturo Ramirez (ND) went 4.2 innings, was removed when he got into trouble in the 5th, but only threw 89 pitches. Ramirez gave up 3 hits and 1 run. Derek Carter (2-0) threw 1.1 innings of shutout relief. The offense woke up for this game slugging 14 hits. Lead by King Brock and Augusto Rodriquez with 3 each. Rodriquez (2) and Roberto Perez (17) hit long balls and Jesus Rivera drove in 3 to help power the offense.

Game 109:
Norfolk 0, Ellicot City 8
Shawn Brock's (11-4) second half slump continued, as the Ports roughed him up over 4.1 innings. Brock allowed 7 hits, 6 runs, while walking 3. The offense could only manage 6 hits, with Ed Duke leading the way with 2 and King Brock's double the only one for extra-bases.

** Kent Davis fell under .400 today **

Game 110:
Norfolk 9, Ellicot City 6 (13 innings)
Ron Reilly (ND) went 7 innings, allowing 10 hits and 6 runs. Jamie King (2-2) took home the win with 2.2 innings of shut-out ball and Ron Harris got the save (1). The offense was lead by Mike Ford and Augusto Rodriquez with 4 hits each. Fordd added 2 RBI's and Rodriquez 3 runs. Jeff Lewis and Kent Davis added 2 hits with Lewis and Jesus Rivera collecting 2 RBI's each.

Game 111:
Richmond 4, Norfolk 3
Miguel Contreras (13-3) had some more bad luck, as the Cav's couldn't get him the runs he needed. Miguel went 6.1 innings, allowing 5 hits and 3 runs, while striking out 6. The offense was off again today, managing 6 hits, with Mike Ford and Kent Davis collecting 2 each. Roberto Perez added 2 RBI's.

Game 112:
Richmond 2, Norfolk 3 (11 Innings)
Jose Matos (ND) threw another solid game, going 7 innings, allowing 3 hits and 0 runs. Dalton Whitaker blew his 2nd save of the year. Ron Harris (3-0) went the last inning for the win. The Cav's had 10 hits, only 1 for extra, which was a Jeff Lewis (22) solo-HR.Jeff Lewis and Kent Davis each had 2 hits to lead the offense.

Around the League:
  • Wilmington Iron Pigs lost starter Robert Walker for 4 months with a fractured elbow. In 23 starts he posted a 9-13 record with a 4.75 ERA.
  • Newark Millers will be without their hot-shot SS Errol Williams who will be sent to the DL with a finger sprain. He was hitting .297-14-48 at the time of the injury.
  • Hot-shot Jorge Moran, the key to the Milton Brewers run for the division title, will miss the rest of the season. He is out 3-4 months with shoulder inflammation. In 2 games with Milton he was 1-0 2.25, and 8-4 2.48 with the Blue Crabs before coming over.
  • Steve MacOnie, of the Milford Clippers, will miss 3 weeks with a sprained ankle. The Clippers CF'er was hitting .311-11-25 in his sophmore season.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Tony Soto, Milton Brewers, 12-26 1 HR, 6 RBI's
MarVa: Yasutoki Ine, Salisbury Ports, 17-30, 5 RBI's

Both ex-Cav's, oddly enough.

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (146.4)
2) Annapolis Admirals (117.7)
3) Dover Generals (115.5)
4) Georgetown Sixteens (106.3)
5) Lewes Braves (103.6)

GM Notes: I am thinking about bringing up Vaughn and going to a 6 man rotation. With Brock struggling and Ramirez getting up there in innings, maybe it makes sense. Rotate Vaughn, Brock and Ramirez extending the breaks of the others. Something to think about. It could be fatigue it could be a common slump, but its best to play it safe I would assume. The big question is can it wait a month or does it need to be done now... Derek Campbell is in an awful slump, last week he went 1-27 hitting .037! That is following up a .237-2-9 month of July in 15 games. He just hasn't been the same since his return from his sore back... Jamie King 3.72 and Ron Reilly 4.93 are the only pitchers on the active roster with an ERA over 3.00. That is just crazy... John Phillips is only 1-16 in 14 games this season. He has been on the roster all year. I am going to get him into a few more games over the next 2 months. Ed Duke has been hitting the ball, but he has slowed of late. He is project to catch in 125 games this season. Jose Renteria has done what we have asked of him, he signed a 1 year deal. He has played in 33 games, and isn't overly happy since he wants to be a stater. Phillips or one of our minor league catchers (if they develop) will take his role next season. Phillips is a solid defender, so he will get a fair shot.

Review of our Player Development

I was looking at our current roster and I noticed that we didn't have many "home grown" players on the 40-man roster and even less that are big-league ready... By "home grown" I mean they were drafted or signed by us and brought up through our minor league system. The list of players below are our "home grown" group who have played with the Cavaliers in 2018:

Jesus Rivera - Drafted during the Inaugural Draft, Round 16 - debut 2013
Augusto Rodriquez - Drafted during the Inaugural Draft, Round 17 - debut 2015
Arturo Ramirez - 3rd Overall Pick of the 2013 1st-year player draft - debut 2017
Dalton Whitaker - Drafted during the Inaugural Draft, Round 21 - debut 2013
Vaughn Griffith - 3rd Round pick in 2014 1st-year player draft - debut 2018
Byung-Hyun Chong - Signed as an Intl free agent in 2017 - debut 2018
Luis Gonzalez - Signed as an Intl free agent in 2017 - debut 2018
Bryan O'Neil - Drafted during the Inaugural Draft, Round 59 - debut 2017

Our scout, Antonio Diaz, was hired prior to the 2016 season and I am waiting for him to make some noise, we have been through 3 drafts with him and hopefully this season will be the season that one of those picks makes our top prospect list. Diaz is sign through next year, so the decision to move on or keep him aboard is coming...

Antonio Diaz Profile:
Scouts Majors: Good, Minors: Excellent, International: Good, Amateurs: Excellent
Projection: Favors Ability, He is signed through next season.
Age: 56
Expenses:
Scouting: $2,000,000
Draft: $7,500,000
Player Dev: $6,000,000

Before coming to Norfolk, he was the Scouting Director for the New Castle Colonials. He does have some impressive finds on his resume, from his Colonials days. #1 being Peter Peters. He is in his third season as the Cavaliers scout and I am waiting for one of his guys to make a move. Is it the scout? The Coaches? Financial Allotment? I don't know. Our drafting hasn't been impressive and my patience is running thin. Of our top 10 prospects, only 5 have been developed internally: 1 drafted prior to Diaz, 1 signed prior to Diaz and 3 drafted with Diaz as the SD. Jamie King was drafted by the Colonials in 2013 and Diaz did give him high marks when we pulled off the trade for him.

Outside of the guys listed above the next wave is a bunch of guys we traded for, with only one being a "home grown" player; Joe Chambers, 20 years old, playing in AA and could possible be big-league ready in 2 years (2016 Round 2). We currently have 26 players in our international complex with only 3 of them being 3* or better prospects. We do have one guy that was signed by Diaz who just made his minor league debut this year at 19 years old. He is a 4.5* prospect out of Venezuela, Lancarote Hall, who is hitting .265-5-35 in A-ball. I am going to pay attention to his development over the next year, as well as Michael Heathcote, Ben Sanford and some of the lower round picks like Artie Knight and Chris Brownwell. I think we have fallen asleep on our internal development and need to get back to it. Maybe try to bring in some better coaches, problem is the coaching pool is lacking.

I don't deny some of these issues are my fault, since I have traded away a quite a few guys in my 7 year tenure here. Guys that we just couldn't afford, and a lot of the times it meant including picks or prospects to pull of the deal. Coming this off-season i am going to try to reel it in some and when I ship off guys this off season I will not include prospects, at least I will try not to. Overall I'd like to some more Norfolk "home grown" guys show up on our prospect list or our big league roster. You can only make so many trades and what happens when you lose your trade pieces?

Here is a look at our draft picks from 2013 to 2018 and where they currently stand. Players in bold have reached the big leagues with the Cavaliers.

2013
1) Arturo Ramirez (SP) (#3 Overall) 23 - Norfolk 15-2 2.21 3.4 WAR 4/4*
2) Maurice Noble (CF) 23 - AAA .314-1-29 0.3 WAR 1/1 *
3) Jack Dooley (OF) - did not sign
4) Bobby Myers (P) 26 - AAA 23 GS 4-9 6.52, 1.5 WAR 1/1*
Rule 5 Draft 2017 pitched in 3 games with Blue Hens and was returned / 0-0 2.08
5) David Harrison (CF) 24 - AA .329-10-48 4.5 WAR 1.5/1.5*
6) Francisco Correa (SS) 24 - AAA .245-5-35 -2.5 WAR, 1/1*
7) Raymond Prigent (C) 26 - AAA .275-7-58 1/1*
8) Jeremy Pittman (CF) 25 - AAA .271-4-27 -1.3 WAR 1/1*
9) Vincent Ayers (C) 27 - A .265-1-9 0.2 WAR
10) Stephen James (C) 26 - AA .321-2-10 0.3 WAR 1/1*

Notes on this draft: David Harrison and Maurice Noble have both been on and off our internal prospect list, they just never developed the way the club thought they would.

2014
1) Gabriel Santos (SP) (#1 Overall) - Traded to Balitmore Barons
2) Jeremy Jones (SS) - Traded to Balitmore Barons

3) Doug Nelson (SP) - Retired due to injury 03/26/2015
3) Vaughn Griffith (SP) 21 - AAA 10-5 4.09 4.8 WAR 3.5/4.0*
4) Joseph Kearse (1B) - did not sign
5) Donald Matthews (2B) - did not sign

8) Vern Sanchez (SS) 25 - .260-3-22 0.0 WAR 1/1*
9) Gary Lee (3B) 22 - AA .270-0-9 -0.2 WAR 1/1*
10) Bertrand Balkwill (SS) 23 - AA .289-0-6, A .240-3-12 -0.3 WAR 1/1*

Notes on this Draft: Santos will have a future as a closer, his stamina never developed. Current in AAA closing, but should be a big leaguer soon. Doug Nelson was a top 100 prospect before injury took his career. This was probably our strongest draft.

2015
1) Joseph Kearse (1B) (#18 Overall) - Traded to Chesapeake Blue Crabs
2) Arhippa Skytta (SP) - did not sign
3) Chuck Champman (LF) - did not sign

5) Markus Lee (SS) 23 - AA .255-1-31 0.4 WAR 1/1*
6) Ed Jones (SS) - did not sign
7) Peter Alexander (C) 23 - AA .317-7-42 1.3 WAR 1/1*
8) Rich McIver (SP) 24 - AA 42 G 3-1 5.25 -0.4 WAR .5/.5*
9) Rick Ford (2B) 21 - A .243-1-22 0.6 WAR 1/1*
10) Sixto Alvarez (SP) 21 -A 19 GS 9-4 4.47 1.8 WAR 1/1*

Notes on this draft: We liked Kearse so much from 2014 we drafted again. then promptly traded him away a year later. He made his debut with the Blue Crabs this year, but currently destroying AAA pitching. He is the #28th prospect in the game. Peter Alexander might be the only big-leaguer on this list still on our roster, he is full developed, but could make a decent back-up one day. Other than that this was our worst draft, not signing 3 of our top 5 hurt.

2016
1) Ben Sanford (SP) (#14 Overall) 21 - AA 50 G 3-3 24 SV 2.17 0.4 WAR 1.5/5*
2) Joe Chambers (SS) 20 - AA .240-13-60 0.8 WAR 2/4.5*
3) Ricardo Vasquez (1B) 21 - A .256-7-20 0.5 WAR 1/1*
4) Artie Knight (SS) 20 - A .264-8-46 1.6 WAR 1/1*
5) Lowell Haas (SP) 21 - AA 61 G 2-1 1 SV 6.08 -0.8 WAR .5/2*
8) Jamie Renteria (SP) 22 - A 42 G 2-1 5.95 0.7 WAR .5/.5*
9) Bill Etheridge (SP) 20 - A 32 G 8 GS 6-1 1 SV 3.39 1.5 WAR .5/.5*
10) Johnny Rush (SP) 20 - A 31 G 9 GS 3-5 11 SV 3.60 1.4 WAR .5/.5*

Notes about this Draft: Chambers and Sanford are future big-leaguers assuming they continue to develop. Sanford could branch out to long-relief or starter, but he only has 2 pitches. Just like most pitchers he needs to add some control. Chambers is possibly the brightest star of the bunch, he hits, shows some power, has a good glove and can run. We could see him next year.

2017
1) Ramon Grandados (CF) (#12 Overall) 24 - AA .311-12-63 4.4 WAR 2/4.5*
2) Bernardo Velez (2B/P) (#20 Overall) 19 - A .267-7-45 2.0 WAR 1/1*
3) Tom Dundee (CF) 19 - A .256-6-35 -0.1 WAR 1/2*
4) Chris Brownwell (SP) 21 - A 18 GS 5-1 2.50 3.4 WAR .5/2*
5) David Lowe (SS) - did not sign
6) Ron Reason (CF) 19 - A .201-3-17 -1.1 WAR 1/1.5*
7) Bill Brown (SP) - did not sign
8) Jimmy Jones (SP) 20 - A 6 GS 0-5 5.91 0.4 WAR .5/.5*
9) Bob Watson (2B) 20 - A .279-0-13 -0.1 WAR 1/1*
10) Justin Wills (SS) 19 - A .213-0-12 -2.2 WAR 1/1*
11) Gil McDaniel (SP) 19 - A 15 GS 3-9 6.87 1.0 WAR .5/.5*

Notes about this draft: Grandados was just recently moved up to AAA, he thinks he should be in the bigs now, so we will see how he hits AAA first. He can fly, just needs to hit. Bernardo Velez and Dundee could have careers as long as they develop. We really like Velez as a future IF'er, possible super utility man. Brownwell is one of my guys, so I am keep tabs on him. Due to injures he is now pitching in AA.

2018
1) Michael Heathcote (SP) (#18 Overall) 23 - 10 GS 5-3 2.61 2.6 WAR 1/4.5*
2) Vernon Tilly (RF) 17 - A .244-1-11 -0.7 WAR .5/1 WAR
3) Tim Rodriquez (SP) 19 - A 16 G 0-2 1 SV 6.19 0.4 WAR .5/2.5*
4) Sergio Beltran (SS) - did not sign
5) Jorge Gonzalez (CF) 20 - A .217-1-9 -0.2 WAR 1/1.5*
6) Ronnie Ludwick (SS) 20 - A .313-2-17 1.2 WAR .5/1*
7) Willis Randall (3B) 20 - A .205-0-3 0.2 WAR .5/1*
8) Ken Giles (SP) 18 - A 23 G 0-2 14 SV 3.65 -0.2 WAR .5/1*
9) Manuel Reyes (1B) 18 - has not played yet .5/1*
10) Alberto Sanchez (SP) 19 - 23 G 2-3 12.81 -0.1 WAR .5/1.5*

Notes about this draft: After 2015, we pledged to sign our picks, and its paid off. We never really thought Beltran would stay with us, plus we already had 3 1st rounders. Heathcote is now in AA due to injuries after pitching really solid in 10 A-ball starts. Other than Heathcote we don't know what to expect from the rest of this group. Tilly and Rodriquez are both young and have time, so we will see what happens. The verdict is still out.

Pen ERA: 2.67 (1st)
Def Eff: .712 (1st)

Transactions: Bryan O'Neil was DFA'd again and Left Luis Gonzalez contact was purchased from AAA. he is a 4* lefty reliever who will hopefully eat some innings. We signed him out of Cuba this past off-season, he is 30 years old and was forgotten about in AAA.

Injury News: Kent Davis was removed from the game in the 1st inning after leaving with what looks like a strained rib cage. He will miss 3-4 days... Miguel Contreras threw 95 pitches and 7.2 innings before walking off the field. After further diagnosis he has an oblique strain and will miss about 2 weeks. He will be placed on the DL and young Vaughn Griffith will be brought up to take over his spot in the rotation. Vaughans debut is scheduled for Monday against the Ocean City Tourists.

Miguel Contreras expressed his disappointment when he learned that an oblique strain would sideline him for 2 weeks. "I'll just spend a lot of time in the training room and hopefully speed up the healing process. Nobody likes to be out of the line-up," explained Contreras.

Game 117:
Norfolk 2, Chesapeake 1
Jose Matos (18-2) went 6.2 innings, throwing 109 pitches, allowing 5 hits and 1 run, before handing the ball over to the bullpen. 5 relievers threw 1/3 of an inning each, getting the game to Dalton Whitaker, who threw the 9th for the save (31). The offense was quiet, collecting 5 hits, with Ed Duke leading the way with 2. Jesus Rivera and Kent Davis each drove in 1.

The Cav's offense was lead by Jeff Lewis who went 3-7. BH Chong went 2-7 for 4 RBI's including a HR (2). Chong also singled in the winning run in the 15th.

Around the League:
  • Wilmington Iron Pigs will be without Cesar Morales for 3 months with a partially torn labrum. In 55 games Cesar was 1-4 3.95 with 3 saves.
  • Denney Dooley of the Baltimore Barons will miss 4-5 months. The 25 year old SS suffered a broken knee cap, ending his rookie campagin. Denney was hitting .251-2-19 on the season.
  • Roberto Sanchez, Virginia Beach's left fielder will miss 9-10 months with a torn posterior cruciate ligament. On the season the 34 year old was hitting .302-12-64.
  • Juan Jose Rojas a 26 year old reliver for the Chesapeake Blue Crabs will miss 5 months with radian nerve compression. He is still adapting to the DBL in 3 games he has no record and a 15.75 ERA (he got hurt the same game as Migule).

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Andy Nelson, New Castle Colonials, 2-0 13 K's 16 IP 0.56 ERA
MarVa: Steve Williams, Annapolis Admirals, 13-25 0 HR's, 4 RBI, 8 Runs

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (148.9)
2) Annapolis Admirals (118.3)
3) Dover Generals (115.9)
4) New Castle Colonials (106.2)
5) Lewes Braves (102.2)

GM Notes: Life is good in Norfolk, we keep on winning. Then again as I have mentioned many times, the one thing that can beat us are injuries. Losing Miguel for only two weeks is a good thing, but still a reality check. Vaughn gets his much anticipated debut tomorrow. I know I am excited to see what he has... Even though life is good, this week wasn't a great week. Yes we went 5-1, but I am starting to feel this team coming down a little. They don't seem to be as energetic, something seems off... I am debating if I should place Jose Renteria on waivers, let him go and just hadn over the back-up job to Phillips.

Renteria: .242-2-9 Con: 9/9, Gap: 9/10, HR: 3/4, Eye: 11/11, Avoid K: 17/18, D: 13, Ability: 16, Arm: 11
Phillips: .100-0-1 Con: 8/8, Gap: 11/11, HR: 6/7, Eye: 12/13, Avoid K: 7/7, D: 16, Ability: 11, Arm: 16

It will save me some money, open up a roster spot, but if one of my catchers gets hurt then I am in trouble. Not much ready, on the farm to back up Duke and Phillips yet. I do have some good defensive options, but no offensive ones. then again Renteria and Phillips aren't adding that much O, if Dukes goes down. Something to think about in 2 weeks when Miguel comes back... 2 more months, need to stay healthy, the young guys are wearing out, the old guys are wearing out. September will be a nice month to bring up some reinforcements. With Yokohama not where near the AAA playoff run, it will help out.

Team News:
Hector Padilla was signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2015. Based on initial thoughts he was a 5* pitcher with a bright future. However, things didn't turn out that well for Hector. In 2016 He was named to the A All-Star game, things were looking up. Then in 2017 Diaz noticed his control wasn't improving, then again in 2018 another hit in control. Padilla had a major league arm if he could just get his control in order. Then during an off-season working in January 2018 he was shut down. After an examination Hector was shelved for 7 months. Then the news came things are worse than expected, his arm wasn't healing correctly and Padilla's career was over. In 3 years Padilla posted a career record of 15-25 5.25 in 63 starts. Today the Cavaliers and Padilla go separate ways.

The offense wasn't great, but did enough to get the win. With 5 differnt players getting singles. BH Chong walked, stole second and was driven in by Augusto Rodriquez for the lone run.

Game 123:
Norfolk 8, Annapolis 6
Arturo Ramirez (ND) went 5.1 innings, allowing 4 hits and 3 runs. Will Rose (7-0) threw an inning, allowing 3 hits and 2 runs, and was lucky enough to get the win. Dalton Whitaker struck out the final 2 for the save (33). King Brock lead the way going 3-4 and driving in 4, including a bases clearing double in the 9th, and solo HR (18). Derek Campbell went 0-2, but drove in 2. Mike Ford added 2 RBI's and Augusto Rodriquez went 4-4. Kent Davis stole based #43 and Jeff Lewis stole #45.

Game 124:
Norfolk 4, Annapolis 2
With the first start jitters out of the way, Vaughn Griffith (1-1) bounced back to get his first big league win. Vaughn went 7 innings, allowing 7 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 7. Luis Gonzalez pitched the 9th for the save (1). King Brock and Jesus Rivera lead the way with 2 hits each. Brock, Derek Campbell and John Phillips drove in runs. Phillips played RF, after replacing Chong in the 3rd.

Injury News: BH Chong went down with an injury and will miss 1 week. To make room for an back-up outfielder, I sent Luis Gonzalez down to AAA, and recalled Bryan O'Neil. I also placed Jose Renteria on waivers, thinking it would free up a roster slot.

Injury Update: A frustrated Miguel Contreras told reporters today that he would be out an additional 6 days after suffering a relapse in his recovery from an oblique strain. "I thought my recovery was coming along great, but then this happened," the Norfolk Cavaliers starting pitcher revealed. "It's disappointing. I expected to be back with the team by now."

Game 125:
Norfolk 2, Annapolis 6
Shawn Brock (ND) left due to injury after 3 innings. Derek Carter (2-1) took the lose going 1.1 innings, allowing 6 hits and 5 runs. The offense had 8 hits with the first 3 hitters getting 2 each: Kent Davis, Roberto Perez and Jeff Lewis). Jeff drove in 2 to account for the only Cavaliers runs.

Injury News: Brock left the game after 53 pitches and we are waiting to hear the diagnosis. The one thing this team will have issues handling is injuries to the starting 5. We are down 1, hopefully we don't lose a second. Pins and needles...

Team News: Jose Renteria was claimed by the Dover Generals... Looking over the Genrals roster Renteria will be used as a back-up, since they have an MVP candidate behind the dish now in Andy Kohl. Do I make the move? I have 2 days to pull Renteria off waivers.

Around the League:
  • Garrott Grant of the Richmond Cardinals will miss 6-7 months with a broken elbow bone. He was hitting .233-15-61 at the time of the injury.
  • Jose Chavez the 2B for the Dover Genarls is out 2 more weeks with knee inflammation. He was hitting .319-16-68 when he got hurt. He will be tough to replace.
  • Marcario Alelaria was sent to the DL. The Dover Generals MR, will miss at least 4 months with a torn back muscle. He has pitched in 40 games this year, posting a 3-0 record with 1 save and a 2.09 ERA.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Jon Fiske, Dover Generals, 13-31 2 HR's, 9 RBI's and 8 Runs.
MarVa: Ron Alder, Ellicott city Express, 14-31, 4 HR's 10 RBI's

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (142.7)
2) Dover Generals (122.8)
3) New Castle Colonials (109.2)
4) Annapolis Admirals (106.1)
5) Baltimore Barons (98.5)

GM Notes: Derek Campbell continues to slump. He is now hitting .133-1-6 in 18 August Games. Do I bring Janchez back up? Can I live with that? will he get better? Maybe a platoon for a while, but do I have someone up for it?... Looks like O'Neil will be DFA'd again, so I can bring up another pitcher. I may have to go with Jamie King or Luis Gonzalez as our #5 starter. The set-back for Miguel doesn't help... looking at my minor leagues my best option for replacing Brock if he is out for a while is a MR, either Luis Gonzalez or Jamie King. I checked the waiver wire and the free-agent market and wow it is thin! Gonzalez and King are my next up. I could go with Will Rose, but that is a stretch and would hurt the pen... King has 57 minor league starts, Gonzalez none, but he has more stamina... Injuries are starting to mount up, and I am getting nervous... Cooper Mananghaya will be ready to throw this week in AAA, he may end up getting some starts for us as well. Him losing 6 stamina might of been our biggest blow this off-season.

Week 22

Current Week: 5-1 (102-29 - GB (+35))
Next Week: 3 vs Washington Senators, 4 @ Baltimore Barons
Power Ranking: 1
Fan Interest: 90
Owners Mood: Ecstatic

Runs Scored: 835 (1st)
Avg: .305 (1st)
Runs Against: 405 (1st)
Starters ERA: 2.88 (1st)
Pen ERA: 2.76 (1st)
Def Eff: .712 (1st)

Transactions: BH Chong was placed on the 15-day DL, Bryan O'Neil will remain with the team. Luis Gonzalez was recalled. He will be listed as our emergency starter and will take Brock's place if he is out for an extended time... I have also pulled Renteria from the waivers, too many injuries right now to risk losing a player who can hit.

Game 126:
Norfolk 2, Annapolis 4
Ron Reilly (12-6) threw the ball well, but the offense couldn't cover him. Reilly went 7 innings, allowing 6 hits and 4 runs. The offense only had 5 hits, 2 of which were solo-HR's. Kent Davis went 2-4 with a HR (4) and Ed Duke hit his team leading 25th.

Injury News: We had an off-day today, and with the off-day we got some bad news. Shawn Brock has been diagnosed with a partially torn laburm and will miss 3-4 months. This puts an end to his first year in Norfolk. Brock had struggled in August (1-2 6.16) and July after a smoking hot start to the season. He will be missed and his starts will be hard to replace. We will have to be careful with Miguel Contreras and his recovery, we can't afford to lose another pitcher. Luis Gonzalez will take over the #4 spot in the rotation. Gonzalez is a lefty, only throws 2 pitches, but has stamina of 12. Cooper has his first rehab appearance today. We will be keeping an eye on him.

Game 127:
Virginia Beach 0, Norfolk 4
Jose Matos (20-2) went 6.2 innings of shutout ball allowing 7 hits and striking out 5. The offense slugged out 12 hits, with 4 players, Kent Davis, Roberto Perez, King Brock and Mike Ford, getting 2 each. Four different playres drove in runs and 4 different players scored.

Game 128:
Norfolk 8, Virginia Beach 2
Arturo Ramirez (17-2) went 6.2 innings allowing 4 hits and 2 runs (1 ER), and struck out 7. Will Rose threw the final 1.1 innings for the save (3). King Brock lead the offense with 4 RBI's, thanks to a 3-5 day including a HR (19). Jesus Rivera added 3 hits and Augusto Rodriquez had 2 RBI's.

Game 129:
Norfolk 17, Virginia Beach 1
Vaughn Griffith (2-1) took home the win with a solid 6.2 inning performance. Vaughn gave up 6 hits, 1 run and struck out 5. Four Cavaliers had 3 hits, accounting for 12 of the 17 hits. Kent Davis went 3-5 with 3 runs and 2 RBI's. Roberto Perez went 3-5 with 2 runs and 5 RBI, including a HR (20). Derek Campbell hit a HR (18) and drove in 4. Joe Payne had 3 hits and 4 RBI's. Jesus Rivera added 3 this and 2 runs.

Transaction News: Miguel Contreras came off the DL today. He was put on the active roster, I didn't have to make any other moves, because I didn't bring up anyone to replace Brock. Gonzalez will get a start, and Contreras will be put in the rotation. We will go with a 6-man rotation for a little bit, until I feel comfortable with Ramirez and Contreras getting enough rest.

Game 130:
Norfolk 12, Virginia Beach 3
Reliver Luis Gonzalez (1-0) got the call to start today, and he didn't disappoint, going 8.1 innings allowing 7 hits and 3 runs. The offense backed him up with 19 hits. Derek Campbell led the way with 4 hits, 3 runs and 6 RBI's. He hit 2 HR's (20). Mike Ford and Kent Davis added 3 hits. Jeff Lewis added 2 hits, including a solo-HR (23).

Injury News: Roberto Perez was hurt today, running out a grounder and strained his quad. He will miss at least 2 weeks. Perez has been placed on the 15-day DL and Cody Johnson has been recalled. "I'll just spend a lot of time in the training room and hopefully speed up the healing process. Nobody likes to be out of the line-up," explained Pérez.

Norfolk Fans Go Crazy After Cavaliers Clinch MarVa Conference Western Division: The entire city of Norfolk was alive with the news of the Norfolk officially clinching a spot in the playoffs. Known through the league for their fervor, the Norfolk fans took to the streets and the bars to celebrate. Said one inebriated Cavaliers fan on the street, "DELMARVA Baseball League should have all of the games during the playoffs here in Norfolk. Forget tradition. We will show everyone a good time."

Transactions: Byran O'Neil was DFA'd, to clear a roster spot. Javier Janchez has been recalled and will play LF. Janchez was hot down in AAA, after a SLOW start .275-10-41. Derek Campbell will move to 3B (going to be rough, defensively, but I am going for O, for now at least). Cody Johnson will be used as the Def Sub for Campbell at 3B. I may end up moving Rivera to 3B, cause he has some exp there. I will reevalute at the end of this week.

Game 131:
Washington 0, Norfolk 3
Miguel Contreras (15-3) came back with full vengance, pitching 8 shutout innings, allowing just 4 hits and striking out 6. Dalton Whitaker closed out the game for the save (34). The offense had 8 hits, with only 1 extra-base hit, a double by Ed Duke, who lead the way with 2 RBI's. Jeff Lewis and Jesus Rivera each added 2 hits.

Around the League:
  • Alberto Trujillo will miss another week due to complications from a sprained ankel. Trujillo is the leading run producer for the Milford Clippers, when healthy. Last year he drove in 163 runs. This season he has battled injuries and has only hit .300-16-43.
  • Vince Moy the Milton Brewers back-stop will miss 3 weeks with a pinched nerve. Moy was putting up solid numbers this season .240-26-83.
  • Antonio Alonzo the lone bright spot in the Salisbury Ports starting rotation will miss 4 months with a ruptrued finger tendon, in his throwing hand. Alonzo was 13-9 with a 2.60 ERA in 28 starts for the Ports.
  • Esteban Sandoval of the Richmond Cardinals will miss the next 4 weeks with a fractured thumb. Sandoval was putting up career numbers this season, his first as a starter: .266-12-58

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Andy Kohl, Dover Generals, 9-22 4 HR's, 9 RBI's
MarVa: Cliff Jones, Washington Senators, 12-26 2 HR's, 7 RBI's, 6 Runs

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (151.2)
2) Dover Generals (113.7)
3) Annapolis Admirals (113.2)
4) New Castle Colonials (109.2)
5) Milford Clippers (99.8)

GM Notes: This was a week full of highs and lows. I keep reiterating at this point in time, the only thing that can beat us are injuries. We are now out 2-starters for the playoffs (Candelaria/1B, S. Brock/SP) and the small injuries are starting to add up. We sent BH Chong, Shawn Brock and Roberto Perez to the DL, we got back Miguel Contreras. Our lineup isn't as strong as it once was, but we are still plugging along. At least for the next 30 games we can give some of the starters a break and work in some of the younger guys... Jesus Rivera will move from 2B over to 3B and Derek Campbell will head of the 2B, it will make our infield stronger, I think. Rivera is a -1.2 ZR at second and I'd rather be stronger up the middle and Campbell gives that to us, at least he should... Luis Gonzalez will get another start or two, I am very close to going with a 5-man staff. He isn't a starter in the future, but its nice to know he can extend if needed... The highlight of the week is we won the Division for the 3rd straight season, and it wasn't even close this year. Next year will be interesting, as we will be trading 2 or 3 starters. Jose Matos, Roberto Perez and/or Derek Campbell are all coming up on free-agency. One more year for all 3. Matos is a starter and at the age of 31, I am not sure it'd be wise to try to extend him. Campbell is a greedy man and will price him out of staying in Norfolk. Perez is a 2-time MVP, who I might be able to extend, assuming I get rid of Matos and Campbell. If he isn't willing to extend, then we could see him going by the trade deadline next year. Could be an interesting off-season for the Cav's.

August Recap

Players of the Month:
Delaware Conference:

Batter of the Month: Gustavo Felician, Georgetown Sixteens
Feliciano Claims DEConf Batter of the Month Award: Gustavo Feliciano received the Delaware Conference Batter of the Month trophy earlier today for his efforts at the plate this last month. "He might be getting older," Georgetown's manager told reporters, "But he's been around long enough to know what it takes to put a stretch such as this together... and he doesn't keep that to himself. He's always talking to the younger guys in the clubhouse helping 'em any way they'll let him. Gustavo's value to our team goes farther than the numbers he puts up on the field." To win the honor Feliciano put up a .344 batting average, 10 home runs, 31 RBIs and scored 17 times in August. This season in 118 games Feliciano is batting .240 with 21 home runs, 77 RBIs and has scored 49 times.

Pitcher of the Month: Matt Hollis, New Castle Colonials
Hollis Earns DEConf Top Pitcher Trophy: Matt Hollis took a much-deserved turn in the spotlight earlier today as he accepted the Delaware Conference Pitcher of the Month award for August. The 26-year-old Colonials starter is a relative newcomer to the league, but nonetheless racked up an impressive 6-0 won-lost record in 6 starts. This month he fanned 49 batters in 48 innings and compiled a 0.94 ERA. Hollis has made 29 starts, tossed 194 innings, struck out 213 batters and walked 67. His record is 18-8 with a 2.55 ERA and he has limited other teams to a .211 batting average.

Rookie of the Month: Greg Dean, Newark Millers
Rookie of the Month Winner Announced: Though he's only 23, Greg Dean really put together a spectacular August to capture the Delaware Conference Rookie of the Month honor. The Newark starter spun 4 wins and no losses as he posted a 0.91 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 29.2 innings. His record for the year is 5-2 in 7 starts and Dean has a 3.19 ERA.

MarVa Conference:

Batter of the Month: Dave McGill, Ellicott City Express
Ellicott City's McGill Acclaimed Best MVConf Hitter: Dave McGill battered MarVa Conference pitchers all August and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award. "I've been around DELMARVA Baseball League long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 31-year-old McGill told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month." In 28 games, McGill hit .347 with 8 home runs, 24 RBIs and scored 26 runs. This season McGill is batting .324 with 24 home runs. He has scored 80 runs and driven in 105.

Pitcher of the Month: Jose Matos, Norfolk Cavaliers
Norfolk Starter Named MCConf's Best Pitcher: Despite the number of years he's been in the league, José Matos still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in August. The 31-year-old starter for Norfolk was named MarVa Conference Pitcher of the Month earlier today. He collected 3 wins and 1 loss with 30 strikeouts in his 5 starts, putting up a fine 0.51 ERA in 35 innings of work. This year Matos has compiled a 20-3 mark with a 1.75 ERA.

Rookie of the Month: Pete Martin, Chesapeake Blue Crabs
MarVa Conference Names Rookie of Month: Pete Martin earned August's Rookie of the Month honors in the MarVa Conference for last month's performance. The boyish Chesapeake shortstop might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level. Martin hit .310 with 7 home runs, 19 RBIs and 23 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award. This season Martin is batting .284 with 15 home runs.

League Leaders (as of September 1st, 2018)
Delaware Division:

AVG: Bruce Walker (Milford Clippers) .313*
HR: Andy Kohl (Dover Generals) 47
RBI: Andy Kohl (Dover Generals) 128
SB: Pedro Galavan (Dover Generals) 48

ERA: Tony Garcia (Dover Generals) 2.25*
W: Matt Hollis (New Castle Colonials) 18*
K: Matt Hollis (New Castle Colonials) 213
SV: Michael Willard (Wilmington Iron Pigs) 31

Marva Division:
AVG: Glenn Jenkins (Annapolis Admirals) .387*
HR: Abraham Thomas (Washington Senators) 45
RBI: Abraham Thomas (Washington Senators) 122*
SB(t): Kent Davis (Norfolk Cavaliers) 47
SB(t): Jeff Lewis (Norfolk Cavaliers) 47*

ERA: Jose Matos (Norfolk Cavaliers) 1.75
W: Jose Matos (Norfolk Cavaliers) 20
K: Todd Rutledge (Baltimore Barons) 169*
SV: Will Wilson (Baltimore Barons) 38

Overall there doesn't seem to be any races this year, heading into the final month... In the Southern Division the Dover Generals own a 14 game lead over Lewes and Georgetown. The have a magic number of 13. Barring an epic collaspe the Generals will be making their 3rd straight playoff appearance.

The New Castle Colonials only have an 8 game lead over the Milford Clipers and have a magic number of 19. The Colonials are hot winning 7 of their last 10 and pulled away. If any division is going to end up with a race to the finish it will be this one, but I really don't see that happening. The Colonials looking to make it to the playoffs for 2nd time in 3 years, the Milford Clippers are trying to get in for the first time.

In the Eastern Division the Annapolis Admirals continue to hold the lead, currently they have an 11 game lead with a magic # of 16. In a division that has always been hard fought this was all Annapolis. A division title will be Annapolis' 3rd in a row and 4th overall.

The Cavaliers have this division locked up for the 3rd straight and 4 in 5 years, holding a 36 game lead they will just try to stay healthy over the next month and not lose any more players. The one thing they will be attempting is to break the all-time wins record which was set last season at 117. Shouldn't be an issue, but who knows, stranger things have happened.

Ex-Cavaliers of Interest:
Don Sweetapple (Richmond Cardinals): 30 GS 14-11 3.92 152 K's, 1.25 WHIP, 3.9 WAR
Pablo Freitas (Georgetown Sixteens): 102 G, .280-18-56, 2.9 WAR

Joe Gould (Georgetown Sixteens): 29 G / 25 GS, 10-10 4.24 1.14 WHIP, 3.0 WAR (#2 Starter)
Adrian Otero (Newark Millers): 20 GS, 2-9 4.42 1.39 WHIP, 0.7 WAR, 2.55 RS/G
Jose Escamilla (Milford Clippers): 20 G, .261-1-4 0.4 WAR, +2.3 ZR @ SS (w/ NFK - 53 G, .204-3-19 0.6 WAR)

Norfolk Recap

Three months in and we have 3 20-win months. Pretty impressive, this might be the best Cavaliers team we have put together.
April: 21-4
May: 21-7
June: 20-5
July: 23-6
August: 21-8

We have won at least 20 games every month this season, which is very impressive. We will go for 6 in September. Should be a fun, we will see if Vaughan can replace Shawn Brock in the rotation. I am debating if I should flip Ron Reilly in and out of the rotation. He is by far our weakest pitcher. I am leaning on keeping him in there, because I don't want to wear out the other guys. Do I go with a 5-man or 6-man rotation to end the season?

Jesus Rivera was our top hitter this month hitting .337, he also tied King Brock for most runs batted in with 20. In August we had 3 players hit over .300 for the month. Augusto Rodriquez: .320, Kent Davis: .317. King Brock and Derek Campbell lead the team with 4 HR's. Ed Duke had his worse month of the year hitting only .237-2-11, he hit over .333 every other month.

Jose Matos, Arturo Ramirez and Vaughan Griffith all won 3 games in August. Matos posted a 0.51 ERA and Arturo Ramirez lead the team with 41 K's. Jamie King was lights out in the pen, going 13.1 innings, with out allowing a run. Dalton Whitaker had 6 saves with a 2.87 ERA (and he is currently on pace for 100+ K's). The bullpen was used quite a bit in August with all relievers appearing in 8+ games an throwing 10+ innings (Elmer Hawkins, the lefty specialist only threw 7.2 innings).

We will bring a few minor leaguers and hopefully that will save our team from any more injuries. August was a rough month, but we seemed to bounce back pretty good. Our depth with youngin's is decent, but not great... I just want to stay healthy and not lose anyone else before the playoffs.

Around the Minors:
Yokohama (AAA) 65-66 (-18.5)

All the "stars" we had in AAA seem to be with the big-league roster thanks to a rash of injuries. Cody Johnson, Javier Janchez and Vaughan Griffith.
Dan Nelson, 12 SV 3.83 ERA, and Cooper Mananghaya, 0-1 11.08, will be joining the Cavaliers Roster soon.
Sergio Galvez: .370-6-42 (He will be up with the big club in Sept)

New Orleans (AA) 66-70 (-9.5)
Due to injuries 3 of our big pitcing prospects ended up in AA.
Chris Brownell: 1-2 7.66
Michael Heathcote: 1-1 4.38
Paul Brown: 10-7 4.48
Ben Sanford, 29 SV 2.67, has been lights out as the closer.
Joe Chambers, probably the best hitting prospect in AA, is having a nice season: .259-19-80

San Jose (A) 77-59 (-8.5)
Lancarote Hall: .244-7-47
Bernardo Velez: .272-8-52
Franciso Gallegos: .323-18-73

Jacksonville (A) 53-83 (-37.5)
Raul Rubio: .271-13-56

Week 23

Current Week: 5-2 (107-31) - GB (+36))
Next Week: 4 vs Salisbury Ports, 2 vs Ellicott City Express
Power Ranking: 1
Fan Interest: 89 (-1)
Owners Mood: Ecstatic

Runs Scored: 875 (1st)
Avg: .304 (1st)
Runs Against: 425 (1st)
Starters ERA: 2.83 (1st)
Pen ERA: 2.84 (1st)
Def Eff: .713 (1st)

Game 132:
Washington 5, Norfolk 6 (10 Innings)
Ron Reilly (ND) did his part, keeping the game close, going 8 innings, allowing 7 hits and 3 runs while stirking out 10. Dalton Whitaker had a rough 9th blowing the save (4), but took home the win with a shutout 10th (3-5). The offense was lead by Derek Campbell who went 3-5 with 2 runs. Jesus Rivera and his sub Cody Johnson each drove in 2. King Brock added a HR (20), and Javier Janchez singled in the winning run.

Game 133
Washington 3, Norfolk 2
Jose Matos (20-3) took a tough loss, going 7 innings, allowing 3 runs (1 ER). The Cav's couldn't get anything going, till the 9th, but the comback fell short. Javier Janchez had 2 hits to the offense and Jeff Lewis hit a solo-HR (24).

Game 134
Washington 2, Norfolk 10
Arturo Ramirez (18-2) threw 8 solid innings, allowing 5 hits and 2 runs, while striking out a career high 13. Kent Davis lead the offense with 3 hits and 2 runs. Javier Janchez continued to hit the ball well going 2-3 with a HR (3) and 4 RBI's. King Brock added a HR (21) and 3 RBI's.

Game 135
Norfolk 9, Baltimore 2
Vaughan Griffith (3-1) went 7.2 innings, allowing 6 hits and 2 runs throwing 106 pitches. The offense slugged 16 hits with Augusto Rodriquezleading the way with 4.. Ed Duke, Derek Campbell, Javier Janchez and Cody Johnson all added 2. Johnson and Duke each drove in 2.

Game 136
Norfolk 4, Baltimore 3
Luis Gonzalez (2-0) had another nice start filling in as a starter, today he went 8 innings, allowing 6 hits and 3 runs. Jesus Rivera, Cody Johnson and Augusto Rodriquez each had 2 hits to pace the Cavliers offense. Johnson drove in 2 to lead the offense.

Sept 1 Roster Expansion: Coming up to join the Cavaliers are the following players: Bryan O'Neil, pulled from waviers, added to the Roster for the 3rd time this season. Dan Nelson, pitcher, was closing in AAA and will be on the roster for the 2nd time this season. Currently thats all I am going to bring up. I have my eye on 3 more guys, maybe 4 over the next week. With the AAA not in competition for a title I'd like to get some of these kids up here to see what they have.

Game 137
Norfolk 4, Baltimore 5 (11 Innings)
Miguel Contreras (ND) took a tough ND as the Cav's gave up the lead in the 9th. Miguel went 8.1 innings, allowing 6 hits and 1 run, before handing the ball over to the pen. Dalton Whitaker retired the only batter he faced, then Will Rose blew the save (2), allowing 3 runs on 3 hits and a walk. Jamie King (3-3) couldn't throw strikes allowing 1 run on 3 walks. Kent Davis and Jeff Lewis lead the offense with 2 hits each. Jeff Lewis hit a solo HR (25) and Davis had a double and a triple. Lewis scored 2 runs.

Injury News: Dalton Whitaker came in the came to close it out, but after 4 pitches had to be taken off the game. After the game we thought it was best to give him a rest. He will miss two weeks with a shore shoulder. Ron Harris will take over closing duties in the meantime, and Dalton will fall short of 100 K's this season.

Game 138
Norfolk 5, Baltimore 0
Jose Matos (21-3) went 7.2 innings, allowing 3 hits and no runs, while striking out 7. The offense had 12 hits, only one for extra-bases, a first inning double by Jeff Lewis. Lewis, Ed Duke, Derek Campbell and Jesus Rivera all added 2 hits. Rivera drove in 2.

Transaction News: Byung-Chong was activated from the 15-day, after the game. He back-up in LF and CF.

Around the League:
  • Ivan Gonzalez, Baltimore Barons, catcher, aquired mid-season from Georgetown, will miss 8 months with a broken elbow. .276-4-22 for Baltimore.
  • Maximo Sanchez, Washington Senators, short-stop, is out 4 weeks after a collision on the bath paths. He has a strained oblique and will most likely miss the rest of the season. .307-9-52
  • Ron Alders's hit streak ends at 20 games.
  • Barney Bulter, the Washington Senators Ace, and one-of the highest paid player in the game will miss 4 weeks with a shore shoulder. 12-6 3.76 in 29 starts.
  • Kiyonobu Matsuura, Annapolis Admirals, has now hit in 20 straight.
  • Pedro Delon, Richmond Cardinals, will miss 4-5 weeks. The 20-year old first baseman tore an ankle ligament. .284-5-47.
  • Marcos Davila, VB Surf Dawgs, will miss 11 months with a ruptured ulnar collateral ligament. Marcos was 1-3 15 SV 7.47 in 47 games this season.
  • Dillon Hickey, Georgetown Sixteens, will miss 13 months with a damaged elbow ligament. The 32 year old was 7-9 4.62 in 26 starts.
  • Andy Kohl, could miss 4 weeks with an elbow sprain. The Dover Generals hope their leader is back before the playoffs. Kohl is a ligitament Golden Slugger contender. .308-47-128

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Jorge Alonso, New Castle Colonials, 13-29 2 HR's, 8 RBI's
MarVa: Abraham Thomas, Washington Senators, 11-32 4 HR's, 8 RBI's

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (146.6)
2) New Castle Colonials (115.7)
3) Dover Generals (113.5)
4) Annapolis Admirals (112.0)
5) Lewes Braves (107.8)

GM Notes: Not a good sign losing Dalton. Just hope we can't keep away from anything major. One more week without Roberto Perez then hopefully we will be healthy the rest of the way out. We will see... We do have some bright spots, seeing Janchez hitting the ball as well as he has, and Cody Johnson looks like he is finally a big league hitter... I keep talking about trading Jose Matos, but really? He is 31 and seems to be unhitable as a Cavalier. Maybe I need to free up space and sign him to an extension, just not sure he will be willing to take what I am willing to offer. Who means more to this team Jose Matos or Roberto Perez? I think that is what this boils down to... I am looking forward to the final 4 weeks of baseball and ending this season on a high note. This upcoming week should be an easier one for us. Get some of these kids swings, get Perez back into game action. Then playoff time! I know I am ready, one thing about these blow-out type of seasons they make for a lot of looking ahead.

Four guys out of the pen allowed one run, with Ron Harris pitching a perfect 9th for the save (2). The Cavalier were lead by Kent Davis, who went 2-4 with a solo-HR (5). Game 143:
Ellicott City 0, Norfolk 4
Jose Matos (22-3) pitched the Cav's second CG shutout this week, going all 9, allowing 5 hits and striking out 9. Mike Ford, who has been quite of late, went 4-4 with an RBI to lead the offense. Jeff Lewis, Ed Duke and Augusto Rodriquez each added 2 hits. Ed Duke went deep (27). Kent Davis had his 20 game hit-streak snapped today, going 0-4.

Transactions: Roberto Perez came off the DL and was added to the roster. He will be back to hitting #3 and playing 3B. Derek Cambpell heads to RF, Jeff Lewis to LF and Jesus Rivera back to 2B. Javier Janchez the odd man out, will back up Campbell and Mike Ford at 1B.

Around the League:
  • Ken Minahan, will miss 3 months with an elbow strain. The Iron Pigs will miss their newly aquired set-up man. Ken was 1-2 2.60 in 17 games for the Iron Pigs so far.
  • Kiyonobu Matsuura of the Annapolis Admirals continued his hit streak, now at 25 games.
  • Jim Thomas, a part time CF for the Lewes Braves, will miss the rest of the seasn and some. Out 4 months with a ruptured figner tendon. He was hitting .239-1-17 for the Braves.
  • Lawrence Knickle of the Richmond Cardinals made 22 starts with the Cardinals after herniating his disk during his first star this season, and now he is shut down for 5-6 months with a torn labrum. in 21 starts Knickle was 4-8 5.79. Has the 39 year old seen his last game?
  • Claude Bond, who is on my radar, will miss 4 weeks, and the beginning of the playoffs, with knee tendonitis. The 3B of the Generals was having a solid sophomore season. .284-6-52

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Pat Jeffries, Georgetown Sixteens, 17-26 0 HR's, 4 RBI's
MarVa: Francisco Reyes, Ocean City Tourists, 12-24 5 HR's 7 RBI's

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (148.0)
2) Dover Generals (124.0)
3) Annapolis Admirals (111.5)
4) Milton Brewers (102.3)
5) New Castle Colonials (100.5)

Division Races, well they really aren't "races" this season...
Dover Generals lead the Georgetown Sixteens by 14 games, their magic number is 5
New Castle Colonials hold a 7 game lead over the Milford Clippers in the closet of the races, their magic number is 12.
Annapolis Admirals have a magic number of 7. Their closest rival? The Tourists and Barons at 12 games out. The Barons have never finished greater than 4th. They could be turning the corner.
Norfolk Cavaliers are the only team with their division wrapped up.

GM Notes: Another week closer to the end of the season. I just keep hoping for now major injuries, right now I must have Matos, Contreras and Ramirez healthy at seasons close. With those three guys pitching, I should be set for solid playoff run. Pitching is more important then the offense right now, I believe I have enough bats to handle an injury, but pitching, no way!... King Brock had a great week hitting the ball all over the place, I am glad I decided to give him the shot last season. He should be with us for a long time coming, maybe take over Mauro Candelaria's "face of the franchise" role... Arturo Ramirez had out-pitched my expectations of him this year. I knew he was going to be good, but 20-wins good is rather impressive. It doesn't hurt that he had the leagues best offense and defense behind him, but he made it count. Something others can't seem to do... Next year will be interesting, I think I am sold on moving Roberto Perez, yes the 2x MVP, and Derek Campbell. Together that would be 40+ HR's and 200+ RBI's. Hopefully the "kids" step it up next season... I have to return focus to the team and the final 2 weeks, I will worry about the rest when that time comes. I don't see me being a player in the free-agent market financially so I have time...

Other Things of Interest:
  • King Brock is 8 doubles away from tying the all time double record. Set in the inaugural year 2013 (50).
  • Kent Davis is 19 hits away from breaking his hits in a year record (249)
  • Kent Davis is 7 singles shy of break his record for most singles, set in 2016 (203)
  • Kent Davis is 5 hits away for #1000 for his career.
  • Jose Matos has an ERA of 1.609 for the best ERA ever, which was set last year by his teammate Miguel Contreras at 1.610!
  • Jose Matos is 1 win away from the most wins in a season (23), set last year.
  • Don Sweetapple is 1 win away from becoming the 4th pitcher with 100 wins. The others: Miguel Contreras (111), Marcos Estrada (105) and Jose Matos (104).

Pen ERA: 2.75 (1st)
Def Eff: .715 (1st)

Transactions: Cooper Mananghaya was recalled and will throw out of the bullpen. He had some rough outings in AAA, but with the season winding down I figured he deserves some time with the big-league club.

Ron Reilly (ND) went 8 innings, allowing 9 hits and 5 runs while striking out 7. He handed the ball over to Will Rose (9-1) who pitched 3 perfect innings. Game 148:
Norfolk 8, Richmond 7
Jose Matos (ND) got roughed up, being touched for 5 runs and 9 hits in 5.1 innings. Luis Gonzalez pitched 1.2 innings for the win (3-0) allowing a run, and Will Rose closed the game out for the save (4). Roberto Perez, Jesus Rivera and Derek Campbell had 3 hits each. Game 149:
Norfolk 9, Richmond 4
Arturo Ramirez (21-2) went 8 inning allowing 4 hits and 4 runs. Will Rose pitched the 9th striking out 2. Mike Ford lead the offense with 3 hits. Jeff Lewis and Roberto Perez each added 2. Ed Duke had 2 RBI's and Jeff Lewis socred 2-runs. Seven players drove in runs and 8 players scored.

Milestone: With a 5th inning single Kent Davis reached the 1000 hit milestone. He is the 8th player in the DBL to reach that milestone.

Transactions: Dalton Whitaker we activated from the DL and placed back into the closer role. Ron Harris moves back to the set-up role... Sergio Galvez was recalled from AAA and will get some swings. the 20-yr old is looking for his first big league hit, he was 0-4 earlier this season with Milford.

Game 150:
Norfolk 12, Richmond 0
Ron Reilly (14-6) threw a one-hit shutout, wakling 2 and striking out 4. He only threw 95 pitches on the day. Derek Campbell lead the offense with 3 hits, 2 runs and 4 RBI's, including a 2-run HR (22). Roberto Perez scored 3 times. King Brock drove in 3. Mike for hit a 2-run HR (6) and Ed Duke and Cody Johnson both had 2 hits.

Around the League:
  • Esteban Sandoval, Richmond Cardinals, will be out the rest of the season with a fractured thumb. Sandoval has suffered a few set-backs and missed 6 weeks.
  • Kyonobu Matsurra of the Annapolis Admirals carried his hit streak all week and is now at 34 games. One more hit and he will tie Jeff Lewis for the 2nd longest hit streak in the DBL.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Steve MacOnie, Milford Clippers, 11-24, 2 HR's 7 RBI's
MarVa: Abraham Thomas, Washington Senators, 14-23, 1 HR, 4 RBI's, 6 Runs

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (157.6)
2) Dover Generals (117.0)
3) Milton Brewers (115.6)
4) Ocean City Tourists (110.0)
5) Annapolis Admirals (109.8)

Division Races, whats left...
Dover Generals lead the Georgetown Sixteens by 12 games and with a Magic Number of 1, they have this all but locked up.
New Castle Colonials hold a 8 game lead over the Milford Clippers and now have a magic number of 5. Both teams are 3-7 in their last 10.
Annapolis Admirals now hold a 9 game lead, and have struggled some, but the Ocean City Tourists are 9-1 in their last 10. Magic #4.
Norfolk Cavaliers set a record for wins in a season with 118 and hold a 44 game lead.

GM Notes: This is just one of those years were everything seems to be going right (knock on wood). With two weeks left, I have updated the lineups to get the starters out of the games, hopefully to curb some injuries and get the younger guys some ab's... The rotation will go through the regular cycle, and then we will determine if we need to rest Miguel and Matos for the playoffs. They are my 1 and 2, and must start games 1 and 2. Based on the current rotation, they may both get 2 more starts... Two more weeks, twelve more games and then its show-time. We will try to win our 3rd Championship in a row and the way this team has been playing, all season, it should be interesting. The nerves haven't set-in yet... This offense has been incredible this season. If Derek Campbell can get 6 more RBI's and Ed Duke 2, we will have 5 players with 100+ RBI's in our lineup! Crazy. Goes to show that we have some offense to spare this off-season.

Other Things of Interest:
King Brock is 5 doubles away from tying the all time double record. Set in the inaugural year 2013 (50).
Kent Davis is 13 singles away from breaking his hits in a year record (249)
Kent Davis is 3 singles shy of break his record for most singles, set in 2016 (203)
Jose Matos is 1 win away from the most wins in a season (23), set last year.
Jose Matos ERA jumped to 1.72 and that pretty much dropped him out of the top ERA race.

Don Sweetapple is 1 win away from becoming the 4th pitcher with 100 wins. The others: Miguel Contreras (111), Marcos Estrada (105) and Jose Matos (104).

The 2018 Cavaliers have scored 953 runs, the 3rd most in the DBL history. With 12 games left they will try to track down the #2 and #3 teams and become the most prolific offense in DBL history.
1) 2017 Ocean City Tourists - 982
2) 2017 Norfolk Cavaliers - 957
3) 2018 Norfolk Cavaliers - 953
4) 2015 Annapolis Admirals - 926
These are the only 4 times in history that a team has scored over 900 runs.

Def Eff: .714 (1st)

Game 151:
Chesapeake 3, Norfolk 11
Vaughan Griffith (5-1) continued with his success going 8 innings, allowing 9 hits and 3 runs (2 ER) while striking out 8. The Cav's had 17 hits with 3 players, Kent Davis, Javier Janchez and Jesus Rivera getting 3 each. Davis added 2 runs and 3 RBI's. Ed Duke hit a HR (29), scored 3 times and drove in 2. King Brock hit a HR (26).

Game 152:
Chesapeake 0, Norfolk 4
Miguel Contrears (16-4) went 8.1 innings of 1 hit ball before handing the ball over to Dalton Whitaker who struck out both hitters he saw. Kent Davis had another 3-hit day leading the Cav's, he also drove in one and scored one. Derek Campbell and Mike Ford each added 2 hits.

Game 153:
Chesapeake 3, Norfolk 5
Jose Matos (23-3) went 6.2 innings, allowing 9 hits and 3 runs, winning 23 games for the second straing season. Dalton Whitaker pitched the 9th for the save (36). King Brock lead the offense with a 2 hits, a double and a HR (27), driving in 3. Ed Duke and Derek Campbell alos had 2 hits.

Game 154:
Chesapeake 5, Norfolk 3
Arturo Ramirez (ND) went 7 innings, allowing 5 hits and 2 runs, but the bullpen couldn't close out the game. Then again 2 unearned runs on 3 errors didn't help. Elmer Hawkins (4-2) was the unlucky loser with the only batter he facing, reaching on an error. The offense was pretty quiet with King Brock and Kent Davis each getting 2 hits. Roberto Perez hit a HR (22).

Game 155:
Norfolk 9, Ocean City 6
Ron Reilly (15-6) went 8.1 innings, allowing 6 hits and 3 runs and continued to stay hot. Will Rose got roughed up allowing 3 hits and 3 runs in 1/3, but Dalton Whitaker came and struck out the only batter he faced on 3-pitches for the save (37). Kent Davis lead the offese with 3 hits, 2 runs and 2 RBI's. Roberto Perez hit a 3-run HR (23) and drove in 4. Jeff Lewis and Mile Ford both added 2 hits.

Game 156:
Norfolk 5, Ocean City 4
Vaughan Griffith (6-1) went 5.2 innings, allowing 6 hits and 3 runs. Jamie King pitched 2.1 innings of perfect releif and Dalton Whitaker took home the save (38). Kent Davis went 4-5 with 2 RBI's, including the only extra-base hit a double. King Brock added 3 hits.

Game 157:
Norfolk 1, Ocean City 0
Miguel Contreras (ND) looked good, over 7.1 innings, allowing 4 hits and striking out 7. Will Rose (10-1) threw 2/3's allowing 1 hit, and Ron Harris closed the door for the save (5). Mike Ford lead the offense with 3 hits and Jesus Rivera added 2 hits, including the game winning hit in the 9th. Mike Ford singled, Sergio Galvez PR, stole second, then scored on a Rivera single.

Injury News: The Cav's wait for the new as Kent Davis was pulled from the game after being hit by a pitch in the 1st. Diagnosis is pending and we hold our breath.

Around the League:
  • Jorge Quintero, Seaford Blue Jays, is out the rest of the year with a ruptured finger tendon. The 37-year old vows to return for the 2019 season. This year: .257-20-66
  • Zafar Khorasani, Ocean City Tourists, is out with a fractured hip. If all goes right he should be ready for spring training next year. He is expected to miss 6-months. He has played 42 games with the Tourists this season: .260-2-20
  • Pat Jeffries of the Georgetown Sixteens has not hit in 20 straight: .360-18-80
  • Kiyonobu Matsurra of the Annapolis Admirals had his hit streak stopped at 39 games! Trying to become just the second player with a hit streak of 40, his 39 game streak is the 2nd longest in DBL history: .351-4-51
  • David Chambers of the Lewes Braves will miss 14 months with a torn flexor tendon in his elbow. In 48 games this season Chambers was 7-8 3 SV and a 3.13 ERA.
  • Peter Peters, of the New Castle Colonials will miss 4 weeks with a straind hamstring. Peters will end his injury plagued off-season on the DL. The 3-time MVP had an off-year, making is frist trip to the DL this season, and he ended up there 2 times. .299-34-72 A huge blow to the Colonials play-off hopes!

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Pete MacCammon, Milford Clippers, 10-23 3 HR's, 9 RBI's.
MarVa: Steve Williams, Annapolis Admirals, 15-28 1 HR, 13 RBI's

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (153.2)
2) Annapolis Admirals (120.9)
3) Dover Generals (113.4)
4) Lewes Braves (111.7)
5) Washington Senators (104.6)

Division Races, whats left...
Dover Generals - clinched
New Castle Colonials - magic # 1, with a 5 game lead over the Clippers
Annapolis Admirals - clinched
Norfolk Cavaliers - clinched

GM Notes: Five games left this season, and the last 4 our against who will be our playoff opponent, the Annapolis Admirals. It works out nicely with Miguel Contreras and Jose Matos not pitching against them. Contreras is done for the season. Matos has one more start. And I have decided put Cooper Mananghaya in to throw the last game of the regular season. This will probably his last start, and next year he will be trying to earn a bullpen role... Five days left and now we have to wait to see how Kent Davis is going to be. CF is probably our weakest position in terms of bench, so losing him could be hurtful to the team. He is our leadoff man, he owns a .408 OBP and has over 50 steals. Hopefully its nothing too major... Last season Ron Reilly didn't make the playoff roster, this year he is finishing really strong and may end up being my #4. I will have to look back and see how he did against Annapolis, him and Vaughan Griffith will be throwing against them this week...

Other Things of Interest:
King Brock is 4 doubles away from tieing the all time double record. Set in the innagural year 2013 (50).
Kent Davis now has 252 hits, breaking his 2016 record of 249 for most hits in a season.
Kent Davis has 212 singles this season, breaking his record of 203 set 2 years ago.
Jose Matos is tied with 23 wins. He has 1 more start to try to break the record.

Don Sweetapple is 1 win away from becoming the 4th pitcher with 100 wins. He has 2 ND's in his last 2 starts.
The others: Miguel Contreras (111), Marcos Estrada (105) and Jose Matos (104).

The 2018 Cavaliers have scored the most runs in the history of the DBL for any one season. With 991 runs they will try to become the first 1000 run team. 5 games left, it could happen. There have only been 4 times in 6 seasons when a team reached the 900 run plateau.
1) 2018 Norfolk Cavaliers - 991
2) 2017 Ocean City Tourists - 982
3) 2017 Norfolk Cavaliers - 957
4) 2015 Annapolis Admirals - 926

Jose Matos (ND) had a rough playoff warm-up going 3.2 innings, giving up 6 hits, 4 runs (2 ER) and throwing 91 pitches. Elmer Hawkins (5-2) picked him up going 2.1 innings, allowing 1 hit. Dalton Whitaker gave a solo-HR but took home the save (39). Jeff Lewis, Jesus Rivera and Javier Janchez each had 2 hits. Rivera added 2-runs, including solo-HR (13). BH Chong hit a solo-HR (3).

Injury News: We got bad news, as Kent Davis will miss 2 weeks with a concussion after being hit in the head by a pitch last week. Davis being out 2 weeks means he will miss the first round of the playoffs. Javier Janchez and BH Chong will play center and lead-off in his absence.

We host Annapolis for the final 4 games of the season, and we will host Annapolis for the first two games of the playoffs. We will be sick of each other by the time the playoffs are over. So far we hold the advantage 9 to 7 over the Admirals. Going to be tough fought series. Now to finish this season off strong...

Game 159:
Annapolis 4, Norfolk 3
Arturo Ramirez (21-3) took the loss, but he didn't stay around very long, leaving after 26 pitches. He went 2/3's of an inning, allowing 3 hits and 3 runs (2 ER). The bullpen allowed 1 run, but the offense just couldn't get enough runs across the plate. Roberto Perez lead the way with 2 hits and 2 runs. King Brock doubled for the 47th time.

Injury News: We lucked out... Arturo is going to be day-to-day with a mild oblique strain. He will have 6 days off till his next start, so he should be good to go. Griffith and Reilly will be playoff roster in case Arturo can't make it.

Game 160:
Annapolis 3, Norfolk 2 (10 Innings)
Ron Reilly (ND) went 6.1 innings of shutout ball, allowing just 4 hits. Derek Carter (2-2) threw 2 innings, giving up 2 runs (1 ER) on 3 hits. Dalton Whitaker retired the last batter, not sure why he wasn't in earlier. The offense had another "off" day against the Admirals, managing only 6 hits. Mike Ford had 2 hits and Javier Jancez hit a solo-HR (4).

Game 161:
Annapolis 4, Norfolk 6
Vaughan Griffith (7-1) may have pitched himself into the post-season rotation, with a 7.1 inning performance. He gave up 9 hits and 4 runs, while striking out 7. Dalton Whitaker picked up his 40th save with a perfect 9th. Four Cav's had 2 hits each, Roberto Perez, Derek Campbell, King Brock and Mike Ford. Campbell hit a solo-HR (23), Perez drove in 2 and King Brock doubled for the 3rd straight game. He now has 49, 1 shy of the record.

Game 162:
Annapolis 1, Norfolk 6
Cooper Mananghaya (1-0) took hom the win with a solid performance, going 6.1 innings, allowing 5 hits and 1 run (0 ER), he struck out 4. Luis Gonzalez threw the final 2.2 innings, allowing 2 hits. The offense slugged out 12 hits, with Jeff Lewis, Roberto Perez, Derek Campbell and Mike Ford all getting 2 each. Campbell and Cody Johnson each had 2 RBI's and Roberto Perez hit a solo-HR (24).

Around the League:
  • Pat Jeffries of the Georgetown Sixteens had his hit-streak of 20 games halted.
  • Theodore Petherick of the Christiana Blue Hens has been forced to retire with a rotator cuff injury. The now 39-year-old started his career with the Cavaliers, and pitched with 7 teams (plus 2 stints with Newark). In 397 games, Theo posted a 23-25 record with 78 saves and a 3.41 ERA. "I'd give anything if I could to get back out there and play again," he told BNN. "You don't know how bad I want to say, 'You know what? Maybe I can try it again.' But then reality sets in. And common sense sets in. There ain't no way I can go through that again."

Players of the Week:
Delaware: n/a
MarVa: n/a

Power Rankings (not updated last week):
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (153.2)
2) Annapolis Admirals (120.9)
3) Dover Generals (113.4)
4) Lewes Braves (111.7)
5) Washington Senators (104.6)

GM Notes: Dalton Whitaker ended the season with 97 K's ending his string of 4 straight seasons with 100+ K's... Been waiting a long time for the playoffs and now they are here. Getting excited to get them going, yet a little nervous. Going up against a red-hot Admirals team, and we are without 3 starters: Kent Davis, Mauro Candelaria and Shawn Brock. Just need to get the roster set and have some fun... The starters didn't seem to be all that "great" in the last week. Hopefully that doesn't mean they are getting tired and wore down... Not sure I will have any "big" playoff roster choices, but I will have to decide who will start game 4 (Griffith or Reilly) and who will play CF. Other than that I think we are ready to go...

Other Things of Interest:
King Brock ended the season with 49 doubles falling 1 shy of the record set in the innagural year 2013 (50).
Jose Matos had a ND in his last start finishing the season tied with 23 wins, tied with the most wins in a season.

Don Sweetapple took a loss in his last start of the season and remains 1 win shy, from becoming the 4th pitcher with 100 wins. He has 0-1 with 2 ND's in his final 3 starts.
The others: Miguel Contreras (111), Marcos Estrada (105) and Jose Matos (104).

The 2018 Cavaliers have scored the most runs in the history of the DBL for any one season, becoming the first DBL team ever to score over 1000 runs in a season.
1) 2018 Norfolk Cavaliers - 1015
2) 2017 Ocean City Tourists - 982
3) 2017 Norfolk Cavaliers - 957
4) 2015 Annapolis Admirals - 926

Good luck in the postseason. After a dominating season it's time to play some games that really matter!

Yes finally... but for some reason I am not feeling that confident. Not sure why, considering the season this team had.

Delaware Conference Championship Preview

Dover will have home field advantage, so games 1,2, 6 and 7 will be in Dover. Dover held their own versus the Colonials this season, willing 10 of 16...

Key Injuries:
Dover:
Claude Bond (3B) : .284-6-52 (6 days)
Andy Kohl (C) : .308-47-128 (1 day)
(I looked at their playoff roster and Kohl has not been added, playoffs start today, would be surprised if the leave him off completely)

New Castle:
Peter Peters (RF) : .299-34-72 (out for season)

If Kohl doesn't get added to the roster, then they teams will both be down their best hitters, and maybe it will even things out. With Peters not in the lineup New Castle is a different, less feared team. May Hollis the New Castle ace struggled against the Generals this year (0-2 3.33), which makes me believe all things point to Dover.

Dover comes in slumping however winning 4 over their last 10.
New Castle not much better, but they have won 6 of their last 10.

This is Dover's 4th playoff appearance (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018), and they have won the Conference title 1 time. New Castle is making the playoffs for the 2nd time (2016, 2018), and they won the Conference in 2016, beating Dover.

Dover is out for revenge for that 2016 defeat, and with Peters is out, my prediction is Dover in 5.

MarVa Conference Championships Preview

The Admirals and the Cavaliers finished the season splitting a four game series, with the Cav's winning the last two. Annapolis, however, comes into the post season red hot winning 8 of their last 10. The Cav's are hot as well, winning 7 of their last 10. The big difference is health, the Cav's have some injuries, and the Admirals are pretty much at full health.

Injuries:
Annapolis:
Diego Fuentes (SS) - .265-6-47 (out for season)

Norfolk:
Mauro Candelaria (1B) : .301-4-53 (out for season)
Shanw Brock (SP) : 12-5 2.73 (out for season)
Kent Davis (CF) : .376-5-73 (6 days)
Ivan Pineda (MR) : 9 G 1-0 3.15 2 SV (out for season)

Kent is our lead-off man so that will hurt as we will have to find someone to replace his .400+ obpct.

Both teams have been to the playoffs 4 times, with Annapolis making it in 2013, 2016, 2017 and 2018, and Norfolk making it 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018. Annapolis has lost to the Cavaliers the last 2 seasons and our out to reach their first Championship. The Cav's have won 3 titles and are trying to win their fourth, but can we stop the Admirals??

Our pitching rotation is set-up to go with our 1-2 on the bump for games 1 and 2. We hope Arturo is ready for game 3, but we will see, if not we have Griffith and Reilly nipping at the bud.

I am nervous heading into the series, with Davis out, and us beating Annapolis the last 2 seasons... going to make for an interesting series. Since our pitching is lined up, I am going to say we hold the advantage, even if Contreras and Matos weren't at their best against the Admirals this season.

Last Season Contreras we 3-0 0.38 in the playoffs and Matos was 1-1 2.57 in 2 starts and 1 relief appearance... I like this team, we have had a fairy tale season, and I think it will continue, but it won't be easy...

My prediction Norfolk in 6.

Game 1's

Game 1 - Annapolis Admirals @ Norfolk Cavaliers

The Admirals are throwing lefty Jimmy Carr, on the season Jimmy was 14-9 4.88 in 32 starts, and 2-2 5.40 against Norfolk. The Cavaliers counter with, one of their two aces, Miguel Contreras. Miguel posted a 16-4 2.35 during the season, but was 0-1 5.54 versus Annapolis.

The Cavaliers were 26-8 vs. Lefties on the season.

Our line-up is pretty solid.
1) Javier Janchez (CF)
2) Jeff Lewis (LF)
3) Roberto Perez (3B)
4) Derek Campbell (RF)
5) King Brock (DH)
6) Mike Ford (1B)
7) Ed Duke (C)
8) Jesus Rivera (2B)
9) Augusto Rodriquez (SS)

Bench:
Cody Johnson (UTL)
John Phillips (C)
Joe Payne (UTL)
Jose Renteria (C)
Byung-Hyun Chong (OF)

For the final roster spot, I elected to go with John Phillips, over Byran O'Neil (OF) and Derek Carter (MR). I am carrying 11 pitchers and using a 4 man rotation so I should be ok there. Having 3 catchers isn't ideal, but it gives me a little piece of mind.

I have Javier Janchez leading off. I was uncertain about who I should put here, but went with Janchez over King Brock due to speed. Didn't think it would be wise to move the power hitters. If Janchez doesn't get the job done in games 1 and 2 and Jesus Rivera is hitting, watch for a switch.

Inning 1:
Top: Kiyonobu Matsuura lines a single to left to start the game off. Sanho Busones flies out to right. Matsuura steals second. Glenn Jenkins flies out to left. Steve Williams grounds out to short to end the inning.
Bottom: Javier Janchez hits a chopper between first and second for a single. Jeff Lewis strikes out. Roberto Perez singles to left, Janchez moves to second. Derek Campbell hits a laser over the RF wall (347 ft). King Brock grounds out to second. Mike Ford flies out to center.
Annapolis 0, Norfolk 3

Inning 2:
Top: Jorge Gutierrez doubles down the left field line. Jose Colon grounds out to second. Gutierrez moves up to third. Roberto Chavez stikes out. Bill Giles strikes out looking.
Bottom: Ed Duke grounds out to second. Jesus Rivera grounds out to third. Augusto Rodriquez reaches on an infield single. Javier Janchez singles up the middle. Jeff Lewis singles to left, Rodriquez scores, Janchez moves to third. Janchez scores on a wild pitch, Lewis advances to second. Roberto Perez grounds out to short.
Annapolis 0, Norfolk 5

Inning 3:
Top: William Sloan grounds out to second. Matsuura grounds back to the mound. Busones doubles down the left-field line, safe at second on a close call. Jenkins goes down swinging.
Bottom: Derek Campbell reaches second on a 2-base error by the third baseman. King Brock flies out to center. Mike Ford grounds out to short. Ed Duke flies out to center.
Annapolis 0, Norfolk 5

Inning 4:
Top: Williams singles up the middle. Gutierrez strikes out. Colon flies out to center. Chavez strikes out.
Bottom: Jesus Rivera grounds out to short. Augusto Rodriquez doubles to right-center. Javier Janchez grounds out to the pitcher. Jeff Lewis grounds out to first.
Annapolis 0, Norfolk 5

Inning 5:
Top: Giles strikes out. Sloan doubles to left. Matsuura stikes out. Busones singles to center, Sloan scores. Jenkins doubles to deep right-center, Busones scores. Williams grounds out to the pitcher.
Bottom: Roberto Perez grounds out to third. Derek Campbell singles into left. King Brock gets plunked, Campbell moves up to second. Mike Ford strikes out. Ed Duke hits it like he knew what was coming (367 ft). Jesus Rivera goes back-to-back with a shot of his own (430 ft). Augusto Rodriquez singles up the middle... Now Pitching: Augusto Flores RH... Javier Janchez lines out to first.
Annapolis 2, Norfolk 9

Inning 6:
Top: Gutierrez flies out to center. Colon grounds back to the mount. Chavez strikes out.
Bottom: Jeff Lewis starts things off with a triple. Roberto Perez strikes out. Derek Campbell strikes out. King Brock flies out to right.
Annapolis 2, Norfolk 9

Inning 7:
Top: Giles grounds out to first. Sloan fllies out to center. Matsuura flies out to right.
Bottom: Mike Ford flies out to center. Ed Duke doubles down the left-field line. Jesus Rivera strikes out swinging. Augusto Rodriquez singles to left. Duke is gunned down at the plate by Matsuura.
Annapolis 2, Norfolk 9

Contreras has 101 pitches thrown. Bullpen activity of Ron Harris (R) and Will Rose (L) begins.

Inning 8:
Top: Busones singles to right... with 2 lefties coming up, Will Rose enters the game, Elmer Hawkins (L) begins to throw... Busones moves to second on a wild-pitch. Jenkins strikes out. Williams hits a slow roller back to Rose, who throws the ball away. Busones scores, Williams to second... Ron Harris enters the game. Dalton Whitaker begins to throw... Gutierrez flies out to center, Williams advances to third. Colon walks. Chavez strikes out for the 4th time today.
Bottom: Now Pitching: Garip Ertegun... Javier Janchez doubles to right-center. Jeff Lewis doubles to right-center. Janchez scores. Roberto Perez bloops one into left, Lewis scores. Derek Campbell doubles down the left-field line, Perez scores. King Brock doubles down the right-field line, Campbell scores... New Pitcher: Curt Webster... Mike Ford grounds out to the pitcher. Ed Duke grounds out to the pitcher, Brock to third. Jesus Rivera grounds out to third.
Annapolis 3, Norfolk 13

Inning 9:
Top: Defensives Subs: John Phillips replaces Ed Duke behind the plate. Joe Payne replaces Roberto Perez at third... Giles grounds out to first. Sloan singles to right. Matsuura flies out to right. Busones singles to left, Sloan heads to second... New Pitcher: Elmer Hawkins... Jenkins walks to load the bases. Williams pops out to the pitcher.
Annapolis 3, Norfolk 13
Norfolk leads series 1-0

W: Miguel Conteras (1-0)
L: Jimmy Carr (0-1)
HR: Ed Duke (1), Derek Campbell (1), Jesus Rivera (1)

POG: Derek Campbell > 3-5 3 runs, 4 rbi's, 2B, HR (1)
Attendance: 43,434

I am surprised at how our offense exploded today, with Augusto Rodriquez collecting 4 hits and Javier Janchez, Jeff Lewis, and Derek Campbell all getting 3. In all we had 19 hits, 10 for extra-bases. Hopefully this doesn't mean our offense hangs it up for the next game. Contreras went 7 innings, allowing 8 hits and 3 runs (2 ER) while striking out 8. Will Rose is a concern, he just didn't get the job done... well Javier will be leading off in game 2 as well. Worried that he wouldn't handle the lead-off spot, he proved me wrong.

Game 2: Luis Trevino vs Jose Matos

Delaware Conference:
Game 1 - Dover 4, New Castle 2 (Dover Leads 1-0)
Dover scored 3 in the bottom half of the 2nd, thnanks to a 2-run HR by San-pao Xin and solo-shot by Chris Thomas, all with 2 outs. That was all they needed as Jose Velasquez was in control of the game from the start, allowing 8 hits over 7.2 innings. Jack Clow picked up the save. Jack is trying to reach the Championship Round for the 5th time in 6 years, with his 3rd different team.

Oddly enough the Generals didn't add Any Kohl to the playoff roster even though he will be ready for game 2. Looking at their roster they decided to only carry 23. Not sure what is going on. Every other team has 25 players... if I was Dover, I don't think I would be keeping GM Andrew Copeland around much longer.

Game 2: Todd Eldridge vs Jerry Copeland
