Tigers 4, Royals 1. [Boxscore]
Summary: Tigers avoid sweep behind solid pitching. Pitching: Fister tossed his 14th quality game of the season, going 6 innings and allowing just 1 run, a homer, on 6 hits and 1 walk, punching out 5 Royals. Credited with the "W", he goes to 8-5, 3.90 ERA, 1.24 WHIP. Smyly took over for the 7th, and in his usual solid manner, worked a perfect inning while striking out 2 to earn his 11th Hold. Man, this guy is something else this season. Record: 4-0, 1.83 ERA, 0.95 WHIP. Rondon worked the 8th, and he, too, was perfect, striking out 1 batter to earn his 1st Hold. Record: 0-1, 4.76 ERA, 1.41 WHIP. Interesting stats for the young man in July: in 7 games pitched, 7.1 innings, he has an ERA of 2.45 and WHIP of 0.82, with 7 strikeouts... and only 2 walks. ![]() Benoit closed out the game with a solid inning, allowing a freak single to 1st (played by Martinez), which was immediately wiped out by a bang-bang double play. The last man grounded out to Peralta, and the coffin was nailed shut as Benoit got his 9th save. Record: 2-0, 1.60 ERA, 1.04 WHIP. Methinks this guy, despite his career in a set-up role, is doing one hell of a job for the Cats. Maybe he should close next year and let Rondon perform in a set-up role as he grows into a closer. ![]() Offense: No complaints here as the Tigers smacked 11 hits despite the Royals stellar pitching effort today. Miggy blasted his 31st homer of the year, a solo shot to left. [Video] Dirks followed that act in the 5th with a solo blast to CF for his 7th as he went 2-4 (.248) with his 7th SB as well. [Video of the tater] Fielder went 2-4 (.269), both singles, and Martinez 2-4 (.263) with his 21st double as he continued his torrid July hitting pace (.397, 8 doubles, 2 HR, 11 RBI). Peralta chimed in with a 2-4 (.305) effort, smacking his 26th double. Next game: Monday, Tigers (53-44, 24-25 away) @ White Sox (39-56, 21-22 home), 8:10 Eastern. TV: FS-D. Radio: 97.1 The Ticket. Projected starters: Scherzer (13-1, 3.19 ERA, 0.98 WHIP) vs. Sale (6-8, 2.85 ERA, 1.01 WHIP). (Premium matchup, both are fireballers. Only reason Sale doesn't have a terrific W-L record is because of team he's on. Otherwise, betcha he would have double-digit wins.) |

This one snuck by me somehow:
On July 19th, the Yankees released Brennan Boesch, who hadn't seen action in the Bigs since the end of May, and has reportedly been battling a shoulder injury. Wonder if this spells the end of his career. Pity things didn't work out well for him, he had solid promise at one time. Source: MLB Trade Rumors. |

Tigers 7, White Sox 3. [Boxscore]
Summary: Tigers rampage over Sox behind Scherzer and Martinez; Miggy hurt. Lead increases to 2.5 over Cleveland. Pitching: Mighty Max proved his mettle once again as he won his 14th! He went 8 innings, giving up 2 runs (2 HR) on just 4 hits. It was his 15th quality start in 19 games this season. Unfortunately, his streak of 6+ strikeouts in a game ended at 19 when he only managed 5 punch-outs this time around. His record stands at 14-1 (of course), 3.14 ERA, 0.95 WHIP. (The Wins number is tied for 1st in the majors with Moore (TB), and the WHIP is 3rd in MLB (Tied for 1st in AL with Iwakuma (Sea)). Coke came in at the bottom of the 9th to face a lefty in a situational match-up, and once he'd gotten the out, he turned the ball over to Rondon. Stats: 0-5, 5.64 ERA, 1.48 WHIP. Rondon had another one of those "uh-oh" wild moments in a truly unusual chain of events. Rios was batting, and he smacked a ground-rule double to RF. Then Bruce threw a wild pitch, and Rios went to 3rd, and after that... a balk. Guess who scored? Oy. Otherwise, Rondon collected a strikeout to bring his record to 0-1, 5.25 ERA, 1.42 ERA. Offense: Without a doubt, the offensive star tonight was Martinez, as he continued his torrid July ways by going 4-5 (.270) with 3 RBI (54). Talk about heating up at precisely the right time! Guess I was wrong about him not quite having it anymore, heh! Hunter went 2-5 (.308) with 2 runs scored (58) and a nifty 375-foot solo blast (8) to RF. [Video]. Other than that, the rest of the team didn't do much. Jackson collected his 15th two-bagger, and Peralta got saddled with a hat-trick strikeout game. Miggy left the game in the bottom of the 5th with a sore left hip flexor. Let's hope it's something that will improve with a few days off rather than a trip to the DL, which would be... devastating. Well, maybe not, with Martinez hitting the way he is, moving him up to that 3rd slot might compensate some. If Miggy does go on the DL, this might mean a call-up for Castellanos to play 3rd for 2 weeks. Sure, The donkelly could do it, but offensively... uh... well, couldn't be any worse than Inge, I suppose. Still... Next game: Tigers (54-44, 25-25 away) @ White Sox (39-57, 21-23 home), 8:10 Eastern. TV: FS-D, MLBN. Radio: 97.1 The Ticket. Projected starters: Porcello (6-6, 4.80) vs. Santiago (3-5, 3.30). |

I get scared and have serious doubts about how the Tigers handle their young batting talent. Maybe it's a side effect from the Boesch experience? But last year Berry came in and gave the team a spark and was hitting pretty well only to be mishandled and ever since his confidence has disappeared. Now we have guys like Garcia and Tuiasosopo with Castellanos waiting in the wings. Maybe it's Leyland's loyalty to guys already on the roster (i.e. Kelly, Santiago, Dirks)? I don't know exactly what it is but I'd hate to see what happened with Berry happen to another one of our high potential prospects.

A serious question: with the city of Detroit declaring bankruptcy, do you think the Tigers may be in jeopardy of some day leaving Detroit?

![]() The city doesn't own Comerica (or any of the other sports venues except for JLA, and Illitch is moving the Red Wings to a new complex soon), and the city really doesn't provide much else other than police/fire/EMS. (Which is its own issue, but let's hope bankruptcy changes things around in that regard.) Besides, the city doesn't really provide the income. It's the people from the suburbs, and as long as they feel safe in coming to the games, there won't be a problem. Also consider that downtown Detroit (where the Tigers and Lions are) is booming and the mid-city area is recovering, albeit slowly. It's just the city's mismanagement and corruption (Kilpatrick, et al) that wrecked things and saddled them with untenable debt. Bankruptcy (and contraction of city area) should help the situation... hopefully, along with finding responsible adults to govern the city. Those are hard to find anywhere these days. |

And that's why the Tigers DFA'd him off the 40-man to make room for the reacquisition of Francisco Martinez from Seattle. The Royals picked him up last June and assigned him to Omaha (AAA). He ain't doing too well there either. He wasn't mishandled. He just didn't have the talent to stay long, and the Tigers didn't have anyone better available at the time. |

Tigers 6, White Sox 0. [Boxscore]
Summary: Cats rumble over the error-prone Bad News Sox to bring their away record to over .500. Pitching: Porcello tossed an absolute beaut of a game, going 7 innings and allowing just 4 hits and 3 walks while notching one punch-out. It was his 12th quality start in 19 games, and he was credited with the win, bringing his record to 7-6, 4.49 ERA, 1.24 WHIP. [Video of his exploits] Alburquerque threw a perfect 8th, striking out one, and then issued back-to-back walks in the 9th before Skipper yanked him. (Should have limited him to one inning given his track record, but I guess Leyland has more baseball sense than that, eh?). His record: 1-2, 5 holds, 5.47 ERA, 1.82 WHIP. Benoit took over at that point, and after allowing a 2-run double down the RF line, he slammed the door shut with two flyballs and a punch-out. Record: 2-0, 9 SV, 9 Holds, 1.56 ERA, 1.04 WHIP. Offense: Along with 8 hits and 5 walks, the Sox helped the Cats with 4 fielding miscues, leading to a nice 6 runs. The Boys will take them any way they can! Peralta was one of two stars on the offensive front tonight, going 2-4 (.303) with a solo blast (9) RF in the 6th. [Video] He had 2 RBI in the game, bringing that total to 49. The other star was Hernan Perez, who went 2-3 (.200) with a 1-run triple (1) (and scored on the play thanks to an error by LF Viciedo - [Video]). He also had a run-scoring SF, bringing his RBI total to 3. Martinez collected his 22nd double (1-4, .270), and the only other thing of note was Jackson getting caught stealing for the 3rd time this season. Next game: Tigers (55-44, 26-25 away) vs. White Sox (39-58, 21-24 home), 8:10 Eastern. TV: FS-D. Radio: 97.1 The Ticket. Projected starters: Sanchez (7-7, 2.85) vs. Danks (2-7, 4.52). I used to live in Grand Rapids. Would've been fun to watch them play.

Contract news:
Tigers have signed RHP Jair Jurrjens, 27, to a minor-league contract, and he will report to Toledo (AAA) on Friday. Career numbers: 53-37, 3.63 ERA, 1.32 WHIP. If you'll remember, he got his start with the Tigers back in '03 when they signed him as an International Free Agent, and he was traded to Atlanta in '07 along with Gorkys Hernandez for Edgar Renteria. Career Summary: He had a nice stint with Atlanta from 2008-2012, pitching 108 games and posting a 47-32 record with a 3.34 ERA, earning an All-Star berth in 2011. He fell off after the ASG in 2011, and the Braves demoted him in early 2012, finally non-tendering him that winter. Due to his record over the past 18 months at that point, and lingering right knee injuries, no-one would offer him a major-league contract, so he finally signed a minor-league deal with Baltimore. He did pretty well for them at Norfolk (AAA), and they promoted him to the Bigs to fill a hole. He did okay, but Baltimore decided he was expendable when they needed room on the roster, so they DFA'd him. Jurrjens wouldn't accept assignment to Norfolk and elected to become a FA... which is how the Tigers wound up with him. By all reports, he's lost speed on his fastball (from mid 90's to 89) and isn't as effective with his pitches. With all the holes Toledo has with its starting rotation, well, Jurrjens fills a spot there. Return to the Big Club? Not unless something really drastic happens, like 60-day DL stints to a couple of starters, since he's not on the 40-man and out of options (obviously). Then there's the matter of Jose Alvarez, who will get the first-call. He'll probably knock around the minors unless he regains his form, like Valverde and Bonderman. Tigers 6, White Sox 2. [Boxscore]
Summary: Tigers' thunder and pitching too much for the Sox; Division lead now 3.5 games. Pitching: Sanchez had a solid outing tonight, as he tossed 6 innings of scoreless ball, giving up 6 hits and a walk while striking out 5. It was also his 11th quality game in 17 starts this season, and his record goes to 8-7, 2.68 ERA with a whip of 1.19. Rondon took over at the bottom of the 7th and struggled, giving up 2 hits, a walk, a run, and threw a wild pitch. Only 7 of his 16 pitches were strikes. His record stands at 0-1, 5.54 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP. Smyly worked the 8th, and he was nearly flawless - giving up just 1 hit and tossing a wild pitch - while punching out 3 Sox. Record: 4-0, 2 SV, 11 Holds, 1.80 ERA, 0.95 WHIP. Putkonen didn't last very long, only 1/3 of an inning, and he surrendered a solo HR to Viciedo. Stats: 1-1, 1 Hold, 3.05 ERA, 1.31 WHIP. Coke came in on a lefty-lefty match-up... and failed to get the out, giving up a single, at which point he was properly yanked. He's 0-5, 1 SV, 2 Holds, 5.64 ERA, 1.52 WHIP. Benoit was given the reins, and he did his job, getting both outs. With that performance he goes to 2-0, 9 SV, 9 Holds, 1.54 ERA, 1.02 WHIP. Offense: The Tigers collected 11 hits and a walk for the game, displaying some fantastic thunder with 4 players getting 2 hits apiece (and 3 of those 4 had homers): Jackson, 2-5 (.272), with a solo shot (7) to LF in the 2nd inning. [Video] Hunter, 2-5 (.309), with a solo jack (9) to LF in the 5th. [Video] Fielder, 2-4 (.269) with a 3-run bomb (17) to Right-Center in the first inning, bringing his RBI total to 74. [Video] Perez, 2-4 (.250) with 2 singles. Others of note: Peralta, 1-4 (.302) had his 27th double. Defense: Avila, throwing error (4). Next game: Thursday, Tigers (56-44, 27-25 away) @ White Sox (39-59, 21-25 home), 2:10 Eastern. TV: FS-D, MLBN. Radio: 97.1 The Ticket. Probable starters: Verlander (10-7, 3.69) vs. Peavy (7-4, 4.19) Remember our very own CephasJames will be at the game; stay tuned for his observations when he returns!

Back to the future. ![]() I heard a lot of Jon Papelbon talk on the radio yesterday. The local sports clown on ESPN's affiliate here in Hartford is actually a Detroit fan so he blathers about them a bit with his idiot sidekick who is a Yankees fan. They are awful to listen to. Anyway, they were citing un-named 'insiders' that claim it's down to the Red Sox and Tigers with Papelbon now that KRod is gone which means that they likely just made it up. They really are idiots. If the Phils actually are willing to trade, I'd imagine they would want Castellanos which isn't going to happen I'd think.

Idiot broadcasters is right. The Tigers will pursue less-expensive options at this point, especially with the way Smyly and Benoit are performing. What they need the most is a solid lefty and righty to anchor middle relief. There's a number of teams out there shopping those, but the price just might be too much for the Tigers to cough up. Keep an eye on MLB Trade Rumors, that'll give you an idea of what's going on. |

Injury updates:
Miggy continues to improve, but it looks like it will be a few days before he plays again. Infante is playing at 2B with WMI today, and if all goes well, he'll rejoin the team Friday in time for their series opener against the Phillies. If he needs another game, he'll play at Toledo Friday. |

My children and I are going to take in a Connecticut Tigers game this Saturday night.
This will be my first live look at 'Tigers' since 1999!
