Quarter-Finals:

Rafael Gutierrez vs Eduardo Gutierrez - Rafael Gutierrez survived a 1st round knockdown and a bad gash on the left eyebrow to score the 4th round KO victory.

Marcos Geraldo vs Rito Ruvalcaba - Tight slugfest that saw both men down, both men bleeding and both men swelling around both eyes. In the end it went to the scorecards and Geraldo won 8-6, 7-6, 8-5.

David Lopez vs David Mendez - Back and forth bout that had little action through most of it, yet saw both men bloodied at the end of the fight. I had it 7-6 and Romy Alvarez had it 8-5 for Lopez. The judges scored it 7-4, 7-6, 8-5 for Lopez.

Hilario Morales vs Jesus Felipe Valverde - There's nothing more entertaining than 2 sluggers of somewhat even abilities going toe to toe as you never know what's going to happen. Morales scored a knockdown in the 1st round, then Valverde took over in an action packed 2nd round before scoring the shocking KO blow in the 3rd!

Semi-Finals:

Rafael Gutierrez vs Marcos Geraldo - Geraldo boxed beautifully surviving a flash knockdown and taking advantage of Guitierrez's pure aggression to score 4 knockdowns of his own. Lee A. Crooks had it 9-3 while I had it 8-4 for Geraldo. The judges scored the bout 9-3, 7-5, 9-4 for Geraldo.

David Lopez vs Jesus Felipe Valverde - Lopez had no answer for the power of Valverde, going down 2 times, the final one in the 3rd round for the KO.

Final:

Marcos Geraldo vs Jesus Felipe Valverde - Geraldo played an effective matador in this one keeping the bull that is Valverde at bay throughout to earn the 6-3, 9-4, 8-4 decision. Geraldo moves on to the World Tournament with a 3-0-0 (0) record.

We have 15 fighters in the Jr. Middleweight division, giving Alfredo Angulo the bye.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs Gilberto Flores - Flores fought the brave fight, keeping it close (4-3 on the cards of Mark A. Jones and myself) until the 8th round when Chavez Jr. finally woke up and landed a series of combinations that had Flores slumping in the corner when the referee finally ended the bout for the 8 TKO. The Judges had it 3-3, 4-3, 4-3 for Chavez Jr.

Alejandro Garcia vs Javier Francisco Mendez - Gracia came out strong, wasting little time with Mendez, scoring the KO on a strong uppercut in the 1st round.

Lupe Aquino vs Pedro Ortega - Ortega fought well at times, but one sensed that it was a matter of time as Aquino patiently stalked him, at times smothering his man with a barrage of punches. In the 9th he landed a clean right hook that laid Ortega out for the count.

Carlos Bojorquez vs Mauro Lucero - Bojorquez came out headhunting from the start and it paid off with a pair of 1st round knockdowns enroute to the 1 TKO as the hapless Lucero never got off a shot!

Angel Hernandez vs Humberto Rodriguez - Hernandez used a patient approach and wore Hernandez down over the course of the fight until he scored a huge pair of knockdowns in the 8th round to earn the 8 TKO!

Marco Antonio Rubio vs Daniel Mendez - They say 3's a charm and Rubio proved it as his 3rd knockdown of the night against the helpless Mendez was for the KO in the 7th round.

Raymundo Torrez vs Jose Alfredo Flores - Torrez broke open what had been a competitive fight in the 7th with 3 knockdowns, the 3rd for the count of 10 with 11 seconds left in the round!

Quarter-Finals:

Alfredo Angulo vs Lupe Aquino - Exciting fight that saw Angulo dominate despite Aquino's furious attempts at coming from behind. Angulo scored 3 knockdowns but the fans had warm cheers for the defeated Aquino as well. I had it 13-2 Angulo while Steve McCarthy had it 12-3 Angulo. The judges scored the bout 13-2, 12-3, 12-2 for the favored Angulo.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs Carlos Bojorquez - Chavez Jr. boxed effortlessly punishing the over agressive Bojorquez throughout, scoring 5 knockdowns in this 15 round thrashing. Both Jim Trunzo and I had it 13-2 for Chavez Jr. It was scored 13-2, 11-4, 12-3 for Chavez Jr. on the cards of the judges.

Alejandro Garcia vs Angel Hernandez - Thrilling back and forth bout that had Hernandez down in the 3rd. He kept control for most of the fight but Garcia wouldn't give an inch. In the 11th round however Garcia went down 3 times and got up 3 times but the 4th knockdown of the round was for the count! Both Steve McCarthy and myself had it 6-4 for Hernandez through 10. The judges had it 6-4, 5-5, 6-4 for Hernandez in what had been a very close slugfest to that point.

Marco Antonio Rubio vs Raymundo Torres - After being dominated in the first 2 rounds Rubio came out smoking in the 3rd to ice Torres with the 3 KO on a beautiful left cross.

Semi-Finals:

Alfredo Angulo vs Angel Hernandez - Tight fight that saw Angulo showing more strength though neither man went down. I had it 9-6 Angulo while Dave Rodman had it 9-5. The judges scored it closer, 8-7, 10-5, 8-7 for the favored Angulo.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs Marco Antonio Rubio - Brutal fight that saw Rubio down 3 times and Chavez Jr. down once. It went the distance however and despite the knockdowns I had it 8-7 for Rubio and Romy Alvarez had it 9-6 Rubio. The judges had mixed results however scoring it 8-7 Chavez Jr. 10-5 Rubio and 11-4 for Rubio. With the minor upset, the dream of a father and son team in the World Tournament went up in smoke.

Final:

Alfredo Angulo vs Marco Antonio Rubio - After splitting 2 brutal rounds, Angulo scores 3 knockdowns, the final one for the KO in the 3rd round to move to the World Tournament.

Fight-In:

Pedro Garcia vs Oscar Delgado - Delgado seemed to be winning this fight due to his agression as Garcia seemed content to stay on his bicycle for the first 7 rounds. He caught Delgado lunging in with a hook that floored him for the lone knockdown of the fight however in the 8th round and then hurt him so badly that it was stopped with 5 seconds left in the round for the Garcia TKO!

Round 1:

Carlos Palomino vs Pedro Garcia - Palomino was content to be clever in his bout with Garcia, dancing and moving to tire Garcia out before putting him away with 2 knockdowns including the 10 count in the 10th!

Jose Luis Lopez vs Alejandro Jiminez - Lopez scores the lone knockdown along the way to a dominating 11-3, 9-4, 11-3 decision.

Antonio Margarito vs Raul Lopez - Margarito wore down a game Lopez with patient stalking and excellent power. In the 8th round he scored a pair of knockdowns enroute to the 8th round TKO.

Gaspar Ortega vs Jose Palacios - Palacios was able to stay close to Ortega through the first 7 rounds (Andreas Raht and I had it 3-3 through 7) only to walk into a beautiful combination that hurt him so badly that he wasn't able to recover. Ortega then proceded to dismantle Palacios until the referee ended the bout with 11 seconds in the 8th round for the TKO.

Pipino Cuevas vs Jesse Bogart - Cuevas takes little time dispatching Bogart with a strong uppercut to the chin to earn the KO only 32 seconds into the bout!

Ramon Campas vs Francisco Echevarria - Campas dominated with knockdowns in the 1st and 6th round while pitching a shutout. The knockdown in the 6th spelled the beginning of the end as Campas didn't let Echevarria off the hook and the referee pulled the plug with 49 seconds left in the round for the TKO win.

Kid Azteca vs Alfredo Cota - Azteca came in the prohibitive favorite as the 7th seed and left after having been knocked down 3 times, including 2 times in the 6th round of Cota's suprising TKO in the 6th!

Francisco Bojado vs Jose Luis Cruz - Bojado was dominating scoring a knockdown in the 12th and looking like he was on the way to finishing Cruz in the 13th round when a cut he suffered in the 6th reopened and ended the fight giving Cruz the shocking upset of the #8 seeded Bojado.

Alfonso Gomez vs Arnaldo Gil - Gil was dominating the fight until he walked into a Gomez cross in the 7th round for the KO bye Gomez.

Alvaro Gutierrez vs David Cervantes - Gutierrez built up a solid lead then toopk control with the KO in the 10th round.

Juan Padilla vs Enrique Esqueda - Esqueda was suprisingly effective on the inside, but that left him wide upen for the uppercut that floored him in the 7th round for the KO by Padilla.

Jorge Vaca vs Miguel Flores - Vaca manhandled Flores for 7 rounds before the damage was so bad in the 8th that the referee felt compelled to end the fight for the health of the hapless Flores.

Manuel Gomez vs Rodolfo Gomez - Rodolfo Gomez made mince meat of the face of Manuel Gomez, cutting him over both eyes and battering him throughout the fight until the referee ended things on cuts in the 7th round.

Carlos Gonzalez vs Juan Carlos Rubio - Tough brutal fight that saw both men with swollen eyes and Gonzalez with a cut under his right eye. The lone knockdown occured in the 11th round when Gonzalez landed a nice hook, but Rubio was up fast. It went to the score cards ( I had it 10-4 Gonzalez while Aurelio Barrios had it 11-4 Gonzalez). The judges had it 10-4, 10-3, 11-4 for Gonzalez.

Louie Lomeli vs Juan Carlos Sanchez - Lomeli got off to a slow start, with Sanchez boxing a smart fight in the first 4 rounds. They split the next 2 rounds on my card (6-2) while Will Schubert had it 5-3 Sanchez. The reason the scores were important was the 9th round was terrible for Lomeli as he suffered a fight ending cut due to an accidental head but when he was starting to assert himself in the fight. It went to the judges who scored it 5-3, 5-2, 6-2 for Sanchez.

Cosme Rivera vs Ramon Tiscareno - Rivera took the lead thanks to a knockdown in the 6th round along with agressive infighting. Tiscareno however refused to cave and took 4 of the final 5 rounds in the eyes of my partner Javier Aguirre Flores and myself to force a 7-7 draw. The judges scored it 8-7 Rivera, 7-7 even and 7-7 even for the majority draw. Rematch is next.

Rematch:

Cosme Rivera vs Ramon Tiscareno - Another brutal close fight was ended early when in the 8th round Rivera had a point taken from him for a low blow. That appeared to let the air out of Rivera's sails as he came out flat in the 9th and Tiscareno capitalized quickly, scoring at will throughout until the referee ended it for the 9th round TKO.

Round 2:

Carlos Palomino vs Alfredo Cota - Palomino got of to his usual slow start allowing Cota to pile up a lead then came out in the 6th round and scored 2 knockdowns, the final one for the count at the end of the round.

Jose Luis Lopez vs Jose Luis Cruz - Lopez came out too defensive minded in this one, allowing Cruiz to hang out way too long despite a pair of knockdowns in the 10th round. A gash on the eyelid of the left eye of Cruz ended things in the 14th to avoid the scorecards. (I had it 7-5 Lopez while Andreas Raht had it 8-4) The judges had it 8-4 6-6 7-4 for Lopez in a closer than expected fight.

Antonio Margarito vs Rodolfo Gomez - Margarito dominated until the 8th round when Gomez shocked everyone with a strong hook to the temple that dropped him for an 8 count. Margarito got up and survived the round then proceded to continue his domination, scoring a pair of knockdowns in the 13th enroute to the 13 TKO.

Gaspar Ortega vs Juan Carlos Sanchez - Another case of a heavy favorite allowing his man to be competitive as Ortega was kocked down in the 8th round. Ortega came on strong in the latter part of the fight, and in my eyes had it 8-5 while Steve McCarthy had it 7-5, both for Ortega. The judges scored it more decicive at 10-5, 10-5, 9-6 for Ortega.

Pipino Cuevas vs Ramon Tiscareno - Cuevas was a man on a mission, scoring his 2nd straight KO in the 1st round in this tournament. At this point I'd say he's the most feared warrior in the weight class due to his astounding power!

Ramon Campas vs Carlos Gonzalez - Campas hurt Gonzalez early and often, finally scoring a knockdown in the 8th round then continuing to punish him until the referee finally ended things in the 10th round. Most in attendance were wondering why the fight wasnt' stopped far sooner as Gonzalez couldn't see out of his left eye, was cut over both eyes and was hurt for most of the fight due to the power of Campas.

Alfonso Gomez vs Alvaro Gutierrez - Guitierrez kept pressuring Gomez in this entertaining boxer-slugger matchup and it paid off in the 6th round when he put Gomez down for the count.

Juan Padilla vs Jorge Vaca - Vaca landed a low blow late in the 3rd and Padilla came out with a vengance in the 4th to score the TKO late in the round after a devastating knockdown had Vaca unable to defend himself.

Quarter-Finals:

Carlos Palomino vs Alvaro Gutierrez - Palomino literally busted open a very close fight against a suprisingly tough Gutierrez when he tore a nasty gash on the left eyelid of Gutierrez in the 14th round. I had it 7-5 Palomino while David Myers had it 6-6 even. All 3 judges had it 6-5 Palomino who earns the TKO.

Jose Luis Lopez vs Jorge Vaca - After getting off to a slow start, losing 3 of the first 4 rounds vaca took over the fight from there on including a pair of shocking knockdowns in the 13th round of this astounding upset decision. Both David Myers and I had it 9-6 for Vaca while the judges scored it 8-6, 8-6, 10-5 for The suprising Vaca.

Antonio Margarito vs Ramon Campas - A rip roaring, rock-em sock-em brawl between 2 of the toughest hombre's on the planet! Both men tore into the other with such savage intent that the crowd was on it's feet for the entire fight! The 7th round is a top candidate for round of the year (28-18 Margarito) as both men swooned and staggered but kept finding hidden reserves. In a fitting end to this slugfest There was a KO as Campas ate one too many Margarito hooks in the 8th for the final count!

Gaspar Ortega vs Pipino Cuevas - Ortega went down in the 1st round but was able to recover as both men banged throughout. Ortega went down again in the 3rd and then in the 5th when Cuevas kicked into another gear, pouring it on until the referee stepped in to end the carnage in this slugger's dream match! Cuevas moves forward with the 5 TKO.

Semi-Finals:

Carlos Palomino vs Jorge Vaca - Dead even through 3 rounds Palomino came out with a vengance in the 4th round scoring at will and snapping Vaca's head with nearly every punch! Vaca's corner finally saw enough and tossed in the towel to save their man any further damage!

Antonio Margarito vs Pipino Cuevas - Yet another brutal fight between 2 of the most feared sluggers in the game! Margarito started strong but Cuevas began to impose his will in the 4th round. In the 5th round Margarito's eyes both started to swell and one sensed the end was coming, but Margarito fired back with a vengance none the less until in the 10th round the referee ended things at the doctor's advice due to the alarming swelling of the right eye of Margarito. Cuevas moves into the finals against the tourney favorite Carlos Palomino!

Final:

Carlos Palomino vs Pipino Cuevas - Every bit as brutal as expected, Palomino dominated despited the heroic efforts of the underdog Cuevas! Cuevas went down in the 5th round then got up and fought back to the point that without the knockdown he'd have won the round! The 2 men battled back and forth with Palomino getting the better of the infighting, when suddenly in the 13th Cuevas went down not once, but 2 times, the final one for the count of 10! Carlos Palomino fully earned his berth in the World Tournament in the fashion of a champion!

Fight-Ins:

Luis Lizarraga vs Miguel Angel Ruiz - Lizarraga went down once, but scored 4 knockdowns of his own along the way to a dominating performance after a slow start in the first 2 rounds. Both Andreas Raht and I had it 10-5 Lizarraga while the judges scored it 8-7, 12-3, 11-4 for Lizarraga.

Carlos Ramirez vs Jose Luis Baltazar - Ramirez survived 2 early knockdowns in a very tight fight to score the late 11th round KO to earn his spot in the round of 16.

Ubaldo Hernandez vs Rocky Martinez - Hernandez was cut early but opened a nasty gash on the inside of the left eyebrow of Martinez to end things in the 4th for the TKO.

Round 1:

Antonio Diaz vs Ubaldo Hernandez - Suprisingly close bout (I had it 8-7 Diaz while Lee A. Crooks had it 8-6 Diaz) that saw a suprising Hernandez hang around. The judges scored it 8-7, 8-7, 8-6 much to the delight of the disappointing Diaz.

Juan Lazcano vs Luis Lizarraga - Lazcano survived a jaw dropping knockdown in the 3rd by the huge underdog Lizarraga to score 3 of his own enroute to a 13th round KO win.

Hector Lopez vs Carlos Ramirez - Lopez scored 2 knockdowns in the 3rd, was down in the 4th before stopping the game Ramirez in the 5th of this pure slugfest!

Battling Shaw vs Juan Carlos Rodriguez - Shaw used faster hands during the in-fighting along with superior counterpunching to wear Rodriguez down enroute to a 9th round KO win.

Rene Arredondo vs Hector Quiroz - Arredondo came in a 3-1 favorite and left a totally beaten man as Quiroz survived a flash knockdown to score 4 of his own and cut Arredondo both above and below the right eye for the 12th round TKO on cuts!

Cesar Bazan vs Ahmed Santos - Santos boxed the ears off of Bazan for most of the fight, but was cut in the 9th round on the right eyelid then had it burst open in the 11th round to give Bazan the come from behind TKO win.

Javier Jauregui vs Gregorio Vargas - Brutal action bout that saw Jauregui landing nearly 2-1 but Vargas tossing the much harder leather though neither man was marked or went down. Jauregui started off fast, taking 6 of the first 7 rounds only to have Vargas storm back to make a fight of it before fading in the final 2 rounds. I had it 9-5 Jauregui while David Myers had it 8-5 Jauregui. The judges scored it 9-5 on all 3 cards for Jauregui.

Arturo Morua vs Ernesto Zepeda - Zepeda's power was in charge during the first 5 rounds of the fight but after that it was Zepeda's speed and counter punching that took over. I scored it 8-7 Morua while my partner Dan Cuoco had it 7-6 for Morua. The judges scored the bout 8-7 8-6 9-6 for Morua.

Quarter-Finals:

Antonio Diaz vs Hector Quiroz - Diaz and Quiroz fought closely for the first 5 rounds before Diaz took over in the 6th, battering Quiroz throughout the round. In the 7th, too many punches and a left cross dropped Quiroz who beat the count but was battered unmercifully until the referee ended the fight for the 7 TKO win by Diaz.

Juan Lazcano vs Cesar Bazan - Lazcano dominated, scoring a knockdown in the 5th then battering Bazan, closing his right eye before the referee ended things in the 7th round for the TKO.

Hector Lopez vs Javier Jauregui - A back and forth brawl between 2 old school sluggers saw Lopez forge a lead then finish the deal in the 12th with the KO hook.

Battling Shaw vs Arturo Morua - Shaw used ring savvy and great defense to hand Morua a lopsided defeat in the eyes of Shane Macleod and myself who both had it 11-3 Shaw. The judges scored the fight 11-4, 9-5, 10-3 for Shaw.

It's pretty cool you ended up with Palomino/Cuevas. That was one of the most sought after fights that never happened during their day. Weird situation with two long reigning champions that were quickly finished(one retired & one past his prime) soon after losing their titles.

I was a fan of both men back in the day, but more Pipino due to his pure power. I've always had a thing for the sluggers of the game. I expected a hard fought bout that would be interesting, and got just that! Wanted Cuevas but was proud as hell of Palomino for fighting like the true champion he was.

Quarter-Finals:

Antonio Diaz vs Hector Lopez - Lopez opened a cut early in the 1st round that bothered Lopez throughout the rest of the fight, throwing him off his game plan and allowing Lopez to steal rounds. They finally closed the cut in the 5th, but it reopened in the 6th and the fight was ended for the upset TKO.

Juan Lazcano vs Battling Shaw - Lazcano was the stronger of the 2, scoring a knockdown in the 5th round, but yet another early cut over the right eye was the end of things for him as Shaw picks up the 6 TKO on cuts!

Final:

Hector Lopez vs Battling Shaw - When Shaw slugged with Lopez Lopez dominated, but when Shaw used his boxing skills in the latter half of the fight he took over to win a close 7-5 decision in the eyes of both Romy Alvarez and myself. The judges scored it 7-5, 7-6, 7-6 all for Battling Shaw who moves to the World Tournament!

Agustin Lorenzo vs Eduardo Perez - Perez scored the only knockdown in this rock-em sock-em brawl that saw a close fight ended when Lorenzo busted open a nasty gash on the right eyelid of Perez that was definitely effecting his view of oncoming punches. the 12th round TKO sends Lorenzo into the field of 32.

Round 1:

Jose Luis Castillo vs Agustin Lorenzo - Lopsided affair that saw Lorenzo on the wrong end of a Castillo KO at the end of the 2nd round.

Jose Luis Ramirez vs Julio Cesar Sanchez-Leon - After a torrid first round Ramirez takes over, scoring the KO with 5 seconds left in the 3rd.

Juan Diaz vs Raul Esqueda - Diaz scored a pair of knockdowns while thoroughly dominating an over matched Esqueda. The final knockdown came in the 8th, and it looked as if Esqueda was on his way down a 3rd time when the referee stepped in to protect the bloodied and battered fighter from further damage.

Enrique Bolanos vs Arturo Pineda - After a slow first round Bolanos came out and dominated the 2nd and the 3rd enroute to a 3rd round KO off a sweet uppercut.

Miguel Angel Gonzalez vs Jorge Ramirez - Gonzalez was dominant in the first 3 rounds before a shocking knockdown by Ramirez shook him up. The next punch from Ramirez tore a huge gash right on the inside of the right eyebrow of Gonzalez that was gushing so badly that the ring doctor ordered the fight stopped for the upset TKO in the 4th!

Rodolfo Gonzalez vs Omar Bernal - An astounding back and forth fight that saw Bernal get his send wind late in the fight and take over in the latter rounds. I had it 9-5 Bernal while Don Koss had it 8-5 Bernal despite Gonzalez scoring the lone knockdown. The judges scored the bout 8-6, 9-5, 9-5 for Bernal who earns the upset decision!

Arturo Lomeli vs Lauro Salas - Lomeli dominated throughout with ring savy and hand speed. His counter-punching was very effective as he kept Salas off balance throughout the fight. Both Ian Lord and myself saw the fight 13-2 for Lomeli while the judges scored the bout closer, 12-3, 11-4 and 9-5 for Lomeli.

Jose Armando Santa Cruz vs Yoni Vargas - Santa Cruz scored 5 knockdowns against the slugger off of counter punches as Vargas was over agressive at times. It paid off well as Both Dave Rodman and I had Santa Cruz winning 10-5 and 11-4 respecively. The judges scored the fight 12-3, 11-4 and 9-4 for Santa Cruz.

Alvaro Aguilar vs Rodolfo Diaz - Both fighters were content to mix it up, throwing heavy leather in an exciting action bout! Aguilar won his share of rounds despite being knocked down 4 times though the final one was the nail in the coffin, the count of 10 at the end of round 7! Both Dave Rodman and I had it 3-3 through 6 while the judges had it 4-2, 4-2, & 3-3 Aguilar in a thoroughly entertaining fight!

Urbano Antillon vs Miguel Angel Huerta - Antillon scored 4 knockdowns, landed more punches, but in the eyes of Will Schubert and myself Huerta won the lion's share of the rounds to win 8-7 on both of our cards in a suprisingly entertaining bout. The judges saw the fight 8-7 Huerta, 8-7 Antillon and 9-6 for the winner Antillon!

Al Nevarez vs Chu Chu Jiminez - Nevarez started out fast, taking the first 6 rounds before Jiminez got on track taking 5 of the next 6 only to see his comeback thwarted when Nevarez took the final 3 rounds to seal the deal. Both Ian Lord and I had it 10-5 Nevarez while the judges scored it 10-5, 11-3, 9-3 for Nevarez.

Mario Trigo vs Raul Soriano - For the most part Trigo outboxed Soriano throughout. In the 11th however he was knocked down 3 times and was nearly out as the round ended! He somehow came back to take 3 of the final 4 rounds in the eyes ofAndreas Raht and myself to win 8-5. The judges scored it 8-6 Trigo, 9-5 Soriano and 8-6 for the winner by split decision Mario Trigo!

Baby Vasquez vs Juan Zurita - Zurita dominated with fast hands and faster footwork as he outboxed Vasquez in every turn. Both men were cut, however Vasquez's was on the left eyelid and when it reopened in the 11th the ring physician ordered a halt to the hostilities.

Mauro Vazquez vs Chango Carmona - A pair of knockdowns in the 6th and a pair in the 8th ended the night early as Vasquez earns the 8th round TKO over Carmona.

Saul Duran vs Efren Hinojosa - Duran and Hinojosa battered each other for 11 brutal rounds but the 12th saw Hinojosa take control, scoring 3 knockdowns the final one for the count! Both men sported bad cuts on the inside of the right eyebrow that reopened several times as those same orbs swelled considerably as well. Duran was sent out to end the fight (I had it 6-5 Duran and Romy Alvarez had it 8-2 Hinojosa as most of the rounds were very close!) in the 12th and it paid off in spades! The judges had the fight scored 5-5, 6-4 Hinojosa and 7-4 Hinojosa.

Juan Carlos Ramirez vs Al Urbina - Ramirez nearly threw away a close fight by having a point deducted in 2 rounds (one didn't matter as I had him losing it as did Mike Hanson), including one in the final round that he clearly had won. Both Mike and I had it 8-6 Urbina while the judges scored it 7-6 Ramirez 7-6 Urbina and 7-6 for Ramirez in a stinker of a decision by the judges.

Round 2:

Jose Luis Castillo vs Jorge Ramirez - Castillo wore down a game Ramirez for 7 rounds before scoring a devastating knockdown in the 8th. Ramirez, left eye nearly closed gamely got up and tried to fire back only to be battered against the ropes before the referee wisely stepped in to stop the bout for the TKO for Castillo.

Jose Luis Ramirez vs Omar Bernal - Ramirez simply was too strong for Bernal, throwing a shutout while wearing his man down. In the 10th he scored the 1st knockdown, and followed it with 2 more in the 11th before the referee ended it for the 11th round TKO.

Juan Diaz vs Juan Zurita - After getting off to a horrible start Diaz catches Zurita with a perfect cross to end things in the 3rd with the KO!

Enrique Bolanos vs Efren Hinojosa - Hinojosa scored a pair of knockdowns, one in the 4th and another in the 5th, and Bolanos lost a point in the 8th due to a low blow but still won on my card 10-4 as well as that of Will Schubert. Bolanos scored a knockdown of his own in the 11th round and dominated the rest of the way as the fight went to the judges. They had it 9-5, 10-4, 10-4 for Bolanos.

Arturo Lomeli vs Juan Carlos Ramirez - Ramirez came out strong taking the fight to Lomeli, but Lomeli took over in the 8th, taking 7 of the final 8 rounds to win going away 8-5, 9-5, 8-5. Both men suffered bad cuts but they didn't effect the end of the fight.

Jose Armando Santa Cruz vs Alvaro Aguilar - Both men fought a brutal bout of atrition that saw the slugger Aguilar down in the 5th but cut badly in the 7th. The cut reopened in the 11th to end the bout for the Santa Cruz TKO in a bout that both I and Ringside Expert Richard Plunkett saw as dead even 5-5 through the first 10 rounds. The judges scorecards were 5-4 Aguilar, 6-4 Santa Cruz and 5-5 even.

Urbano Antillon vs Al Nevarez - Nevarez used effective counter punching and great footwork to keep Antillon at bay throughout to win on my card 9-5 and 9-4 on the card of Markus Heinsohn. The judges scored the fight 9-5 for Nevarez on all 3 cards.

Mario Trigo vs Mauro Vazquez - Trigo out slugged and out boxeed the slugger Vazquez, scoring a pair of knockdowns to win (9-5 on my card 10-4 on Dave Rodman's card) the decision 10-5, 10-4, 9-5.

Quarter-Finals:

Jose Luis Castillo vs Al Nevarez - Nevarez tried to bang with Castillo and it paid off with 3 thrilling rounds, but in the 4th round he walked into a vicious combination that put him to sleep with 2:12 leve in the round for the 3rd straight Castillo KO.

Jose Luis Ramirez vs Mario Trigo - This was a tough bout to score as both men mixed it up nicely and scored well in several very hotly and closely contested rounds. The fight was sent to the score cards early as Ramirez suffered a nasty cut over the left eye due to an accidental head butt. Through 9 I had it 6-3 Trigo while Shane Macleod had it 5-2 for Ramirez. The judges scored it 6-3 on all 3 cards for the suprising Trigo!

Juan Diaz vs Enrique Bolanos - After splitting the first 2 rounds, a cut on the eyelid of Bolano's right eye reopened in the 5th to force the end of the bout and a 5 TKO for Diaz.

Arturo Lomeli vs Jose Armando Santa Cruz - Dull affair with 2 boxers who were content to pot shot from outside. With most of the rounds being low scoring affairs it was a hard one to score (I had it 6-6 due to Lomeli losing a point due to a low blow, while Lee MacRae had it 7-5) The judges scored it 8-5, 9-5 and 7-6 for Lomeli.
