Because all the other teams are dumb.

At his current production, over 162 games Cust would have:

532 AB
139 R
150 H
23 2B
93 HR
231 RBI
185 BB (look out Bonds!)
243 SO (look out Dunn!)

If the man who employed Ken Macha for four years is so smart, why did he let Cust languish in the minors for 10 years and 1,089 games.

I'm sort of wondering who did the O's decide to play in the corner-OF positions, 1B, and DH ahead of Cust in 2004?

Btw, Jack proceeded to have his worst AAA season in 2004, ensuring a few more years in the minors before his recent breakthrough:

Cust's major- and minor-league numbers:

Cust is horrific looking - he can't run at all and he can't play defense. Think of Matt Stairs with broken legs. When he played for the O's, there was a particularly memorable base running mistake that really cemented his reputation.

So, without hiting significantly better than average, he isn't particularly valuable. He isn't as good as he's shown thus far, but a .280/.380/.480 line is not out of the question, and that is worthwhile at DH.

I don't think Cust is that bad of a runner. He got a bad rep when he tripped against the Yankees; but the third base coach was indecisive and it cost Cust.

Ohh, I think he looks horrible. I agree that the Yankees play really gave him a worse rep than he deserved, though.

Only 1 of those seasons was in Oakland's system, and it was 2005 when Dan Johnson was getting his shot at first base.

I think he left as a 6 year minor league FA or something.

Oh look, Connor Robertson to the DL with a broken thumb.

The A's now have 11 players currently on the disabled list. Awesome.

And Bob Geren shouldn't have pulled him after 7 with only 92 pitches.

Haren leads all MLB pitchers in VORP at 28.1.

Odd that a young pitcher this good playing for a strong organization is only 2 games above .500 for his career.

Even if Daric Barton never pans out, the Haren/Mulder deal will steal.....erm...still be an absolute pwning of Jocketty by Beane.

dola,

Do ya think Beane feels bad about fleecing former pupil J.P. Ricciardi by acquiring Chad Gaudin, currently 13th in MLB in VORP, for OF Dustin Majewski, aged 25 and batting .229 at AA.

No, that makes up for giving them Ted Lilly for Bobby Kielty.

Interesting that the top Buck in the AL resides in KC. Would be quite an upgrade over the 14 million dollar man.

What does Buck have to do with the A's? He was a former Stros prospect, no?

It was more about a knock on Jason Kendall.
