14 hits in game 7 and we only manage 2 measley runs
Joe D really struggled in the series. .161 avg with 11 runners LOB. Looks like he's on his last legs. Might as well make his case for the HOF now since even if he comes back next year, will be a bench player. - 3 pennants / 1 World Series Ring - 2 time MVP - 7 time Gold Glove - .311 career avg, just out of the top 25 - Retire all-time leader in Hits (2790), RBI (1240), Doubles (608) & Triples (1262) and in the top 20 in HR & SB

That WAS a good Series! Glad I brought up Grundzelanik midway through the season, he ended with the game winning RBI (even though it came in the first inning).

June '17 Update
NICE RACES SHAPING UP IN BOTH LOOPS
The 1917 season is underway and it looks as though some nice races are developing in both the American and National Leagues. The St. Louis Browns currently lead the AL with BaTTY's best record at 28-13, but the Chicago White Sox are just a game back and perennial contenders Boston and Cleveland are also well within striking distance. In the National League the Chicago Cubs are once again sitting atop the league's standings with the Giants right behind. Seems like that's the situation every June... But the Brooklyn Dodgers are also in the mix, one behind the Giants and four out of first. CINCY ROOKIE OFF TO TORRID START The Reds' rookie backstop, Walker Cooper, is to a historically great start for his career. Through the first two months of play, the 27-year-old freshman is hitting for an incredible .421 average. That mark is well ahead of second-place in the NL (Philadelphia's Cecil Travis at .394) and even further ahead of the top mark in the AL, the .348 mark of St. Louis Browns right fielder Spud Johnson. Cooper's stroke is classic and though he probably won't continue to hit over .400, he can probably be expected to be among the league's best for the foreseeable future. 'QUIET' ACE MITCHELL KILLING 'EM SOFTLY Brooklyn ace Bobby Mitchell, who is no fresh-faced kid but rather a veteran with 343 career starts, is off to a tremendous start and is the biggest reason that the Dodgers are within shouting distance of first-place in the NL. Mitchell sports a BaTTY-best 1.39 ERA this season (he finished 1916 at 2.10) and has a record of 7-3 - which probably explains why the Dodgers aren't in first place (not enough runs are being scored). The AL's top pitcher right now would be Dennis Eckersley of the White Sox who has a stingy 1.58 ERA and a superb 8-1 ledger thus far for the contending Pale Hose.

for the 3rd time in my tenure, I forgot to put the rotation back to "4 starters" and the CPU in all it's infinite wisdom has started my worst pitcher on the staff every 4th day rather than the guy listed in the 4 spot or even the top reliever i have in every slot.

It doesn't seem to matter who I put in the rotation it is pretty much a lock that they will perform SIGNIFICANTLY worse than their ratings. I need a new strategy (though I've tried a ton of them) the Braves just basically are the Colorado Rockies of Batty.

August '17 Update
PENNANT RACES TIGHT AS STRETCH RUN LOOMS
The pennant races in both leagues are tight as the stretch run looms. The Indians currently have stormed into the AL lead with a solid June and July. Their lead over second-place Chicago is two games, with the Browns three back and the Red Sox seven back. In the NL, the Cubs remain the front-runners, with Brooklyn still just three back. The Giants have fallen off the pace and sit eleven back and are probably out of contention. Of the contending teams, the White Sox could prove interesting - they have the league's best hitting with a .268 team average (in a league hitting .247) and Dennis Eckersley is pitching some outstanding baseball (18-6 with a 1.50 ERA). Should the White Sox manage to pass the Indians and capture the AL flag, it would be the first in team history - and could set up an all-Chicago World Series if the Cubs can hold off Brooklyn.

End of Regular Season - 1917
GREAT FINISHES TO BOTH RACES
The American League pennant came down to the wire with the St. Louis Browns and Chicago White Sox battling it out. The Browns held a three-game edge in the final week when Chicago went on a season-ending four-game winning streak. Unfortunately for the White Sox, time ran out on them as the Browns won their final two contests to finish in first by a mere game. The NL race was even better as the Cubs made up a three-game deficit in the final week to tie the Dodgers on the season's final day. The Cubs had won six in a row to set up a one-game, winner-take-all matchup for the pennant. In the playoff, the Cubs' greater experience showed as they rode a two-hit shutout by Scott Ruskin to a 3-0 clinching victory at Wrigley Field. This sets up a World Series between two battled-tested clubs in the Browns and Cubs. Should be interesting.

Did Warren Spahn go on a run or what? 5-2 with a 0.77 ERA in August - 7-0 with a 1.09 ERA in September!
Looking forward to another tough battle with the Browns. It'll be interesting to see who this league's "Babe Ruth" will be. The NL Home run leader in 1917 had 7.... |

Should be a great matchup between Spahn and Frank Pastore, who pretty much won the pennant for us singlehandedly: 13-1 in Aug/Sept (8-0, 0.51 in Aug), gave up a total of five runs (four earned) in his last seven starts. He didn't walk anybody in his last six starts (a total of 53 innings). He won his last five starts by scores of 2-1, 2-0, 1-0, 2-1, and 3-1.
Our pitching's better than our toothless offense, anyway, featuring a cleanup hitter (Spud Johnson) who has never hit a home run. About the only thing we threaten to do is gum you to death with walks. |

Ugh...1 game short.
I swear I have miserable luck here. My guys just spew bad development and this year, my step-right-into-the-rotation 1st round pick got a CEI before his first pro pitch. Thank God Eck is finally lookin' sharp, but now my bats are getting old.

Quit bitching, the only thing the Braves have had lately is flame out pitchers and now the decent position players (Sax and Martinez mainly) are aging quickly................

World Series Update - 1917
No time for a long writeup today (maybe one of the GMs will do it... hint, hint)
Anyway, the Cubs are again BaTTY champions after winning the 1917 World Series in seven games over the St. Louis Browns - with the seventh game coming down to the 12th inning when Sandy Alomar's two-out single scores Series MVP Jack Clements from second with the championship-winning run. Clements hit .414 for the Cubs. A tough loss for the Browns who battled throughout the Series, including an epic 16-inning victory in game five. Three of the seven games went extras.

World Series 1917 Recap
Game 1 Spahn vs. Pastore I have no box score for this game. Warren Spahn takes the loss, giving up 13 hits. Pastore gets the win, stiking out six, walking none and only giving up one run. Browns 5 Cubs 1 (Browns lead series 1 game to 0) Game 2 Pavano vs. Palmer. Vern Duncan's Solo homer in the top of the second is immediately answered by a double from Jack Clements - who is brought home by a sac-fly and a fielder's choice. A rain delay in the sixth cools the arms of the starters - so relievers are brought in for the 7th. In the top of the 8th, UL Washington earns a walk - takes third on single from Dwight Evans, and scores on a Spud Johnson single. Evans is left stranded on third to end the inning. Tony LaRussa ekes out a run for the Cubs via an error, walk and single. In the bottom of the 10th - three straight singles from Chuck Hinton, Don Hurst and Joe Harris off of Wayne Granger seal the deal. Dock Ellis gets the win in relief. Cubs win 3-2 (10 innings) (Series tied at 1) Game 3 Ruskin vs. Kaat The games move to St. Louis - but the Cubs strike early with 2 in the top of the 1st. Kaat gives up singles to the first three batters - and throws in a wild pitch to give up the deuce. Clements drives in another in the top of the third. Another wild pitch by Kaat gives the Cubs another run in the top of the 8th. The Browns get to Ruskin in the bottom of the 8th, as they turn two singles and two walks into three runs. However, the Cubs put it away in the 9th, piling up four runs on four hits. Cubs win 8-3 (Cubs Lead 2 games to 1). Game 4 Spahn vs. Pastore Pastore bamboozles the Cubs again - scattering 7 hits. Three runs in the bottom of the second are enough (with a Chippy McGarr double doing most of the damage). But they follow that up with three more in the 4th (where Spahn walks three straight, uncharacteristically). One manufactured run in the 5th ends the scoring. Browns 7 - Cubs 0 (Series tied at 2) Game 5 Pavano vs. Palmer Chicago starts the damage with two runs in the top of the third, when a Joe Jarris double plates Pavano and Hurst. The Cubs extend their lead to 5-0 by the top of the 8th, with single runs in the 6th, 7th and 8th. The Brownies scratch one back in the bottom of the eighth - but surely the Cubs can close this one out.... But Pavano falls apart in the bottom of the 9th. After a single from pitcher Palmer (!), Maggert singles, Connoly walks , Washington singles (scoring two), Evans grounds out (scoring one), and finally a passed ball brings in the tying run - it's extra innings! In the bottom of the 10th - the Browns have a man on third with 1 out - but pinch hitter Joe Garagiola grounds into a DP. Maybe they should have let Palmer bat again. In the top of the 13th - A Jack Clements walk, a Frank Demaree single and Butch Hobson single plates a run. Elliot Maddox pinch ran for Clements, so the Cubs MVP sits the rest of the game. Ad Liska tries to close out the bottom of the 13th - but a double from Charlie James and another double Harl Maggert nixes that thought. The teams trade zeros to the top of the 16th, when a Don Hurst double scores Chuck Hinton - backup catcher Mike Guerra strands a runner at third with a deep fly. Pat Mahomes comes in for the Cubs. Connolly singles to left, UL Washington walks, Evans flies out, Spud Johnson singles in a run, with the runners advancing on Demaree's throw to home, after an intentional walk to load the bases, Dalton Jones hits a grounder to first...not going for the runner at home - Hurst tries for the 3-6-3 double play - and fails. Browns win 8-7 (16 innings) (Browns lead 3 games to 2) Game 6 Ruskin vs. Kaat After the heartbreak of Game 5 - the Cubs try to console themselves in brand-new Wrigley Stadium. But the Browns grind out a run in the top of the first to take an early lead. But the Cubs get that back in the bottom of the third, and in the bottom of the fifth, a Demarree double and a Harris single give the Cubs the lead. Ruskin settles down for the rest of the game - pitching a complete game six-hitter, and not allowing a runner past first after the third inning. Cubs win 2-1 (Series tied at 3) Game 7 Spahn vs. Pastore "So it's down to you...and it's down to me..." Pastore tries to take 3 in a row from Spahn in Game 7. Both teams trade zeros until the bottom of the third - when the Cubs strike first - and it's Warren Spahn himself helping his cause out with a single - he moves to third on a single from Hinton, and scores on another single from Joe Harris. The pitchers duel continues to the top of the eighth - when the Browns manufacture another run - a Charlie James single, Pastore helps his own cause out with a perfect sacrifice, and Chippy McGarr singles in the tying run. Pastore is pulled for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the 10th with two outs and Willie Horton on first. But nothing happens. Ken Chase relieves and works a 1-2-3 10th. The fans at Wrigley cheer as Spahn comes out for the 11th, and works his own 1-2-3 inning. When Ralph Kiner pinch hits for Spahn to lead off the bottom of the 11th - Spahn gets his own curtain call - he did all he could. Ken Chase has none of it though and works another 1-2-3 inning. Dock Ellis is given the ball to start the 12th. After getting UL Washington to ground out, Ellis walks Dwight Evans and allows a single to pinch hitter Spud Johnson. After time is called - Ellis takes the curlers out - composes himself - and gets pinch hitter Dalton Jones to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to end the threat. Ken Chase - who retired all six previous batters he faced - gets the ball for the bottom of the 12th. Joe Harris makes it 7 in a row with a nubber to the pitcher, but Jack Clements wires a double down the right field line - leaving the world series 180 feet away. Elliot Maddox is called in again to pinch run for Clements. Chase is then given the order to give a free pass to Frank Demaree. The decision looks wise as Butch Hobson watches strike three break at his knees, which brings up second baseman Sandy Alomar, who was 2 for 22 in the series so far. But Chase's offering gets wired into right field - Maddox runs like there are wings on his feet. Evans throw is high, wide and late. Cubs win! Cubs win! Alomar (now hitting .130 for the Series) does the deed. Spahn gets his best no-decision of his career. Ellis gets the win in relief. Cubs win 2-1. (Cubs win series 4 games to 3). I'm not kidding about Spahn's best no-decision - his line 11IP, 4H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, 8K - gives him a game score of 92 - tied for second highest in the BaTTY this year - only Bobby Mitchell's 11 inning shutout is better.
