lol... good luck in THAT park (w/ HR's that is).

Brown's HR-less streak increased to 17 games in early July, snapping it with a shot in a 13-2 win in KC against Baltimore. He's now on pace for 60... which is just fine by me!

1957 All-Star Game
Griffith Stadium, Washington DC

The AL played this game 3 players short with pitchers Bourbon Allen Jr. and Jackie Bowen and 3B Wilford Woodworth all out with injuries. Martin Gwaltney started the game for the AL. He sat down the first seven batters he faced, but a single by Pirates catcher Doug Provenzano gave the NL its first baserunner. Pinch hitter Abe Arsenault doubled, moving Provenzano to 3rd, and then SS Roger Joyce singled home a run. Gwaltney then struck out Rex Seelinger before getting Brooklyn's Mark Silcox to fly out to end the top of the 3rd.

For the NL, Chicago's Randy Liebermann pitched two solid innings to start the game, and Brooklyn's Joe Helton pitched a scoreless 3rd. In the 4th, Chicago's Denny Evers came in to pitch and was greeted with a solo homerun to right field by Kansas City slugger Charlton Brown. In the 6th inning, Brown hit a 2-run homer off Brooklyn's Tom Dufresne, and that was all the American League would need.

July 1957

The Athletics went 15-10 in July while the Yankees went 14-10, losing a half-game in the standings. After going 17 games without a homerun, Kansas City's Charlton Brown hit 8 more over the remainder of the month, although he hit just .233 in July. The amazing slugger leads the majors with 41 longballs, keeping him on pace to tie his major league record of 61 hit last season. New York's Arnie Stewart, who has never hit more than 38 homers, is on pace to club 50. In the National League, Milwaukee's Abraham Arsenault is also on pace for 50.

Speaking of the NL, Brooklyn went 19-6 to move into first place by a half-game over the Cubs. Cincinnati went just 14-11, but they are only 2 games back with two months left in the season.

Washington's Lukas Dietrich struck out 15 players for the 3rd time in his career. Only 5 times in history has a pitcher K'd 15 batters, and three of those are Dietrich's. "The Bullet" won his first POM award, and he is currently on pace to set a new major league record with 354 K's, after setting a new record of 309 last season.

Brooklyn's Joe Helton has been amazing lately. He is on pace for a new NL record 310 K's, but more amazingly is the fact that he has thrown 46.1 consecutive scoreless innings. Six of his last 7 starts have been 9 inning shutouts. On June 29th, he shutout the Cubs. Then he lost to the Reds, allowing 5 runs over 8 innings. His scoreless streak started in the 7th inning of that game, and since that loss he has tossed 5 consecutive complete game shutouts.

Boston's Mike Kreitenberg is leading the AL with a .415 average. In his first season with Boston, Kreitenberg has already gathered quite a following of fans and has quickly become one of the most popular players in town. After hitting .416 in July, Kreitenberg could become the first player to hit .400 in a season since newly inducted HOF'er Blake Crocitto with the 1939 Senators.

The first Triple Crown did not come until 1947, and two TC's have been won since then. The latest was won last season by Brooklyn's Mark Silcox. With 104 games played, the Dodgers star could do it again this year. He leads the NL with a .352 average and 110 RBI. His 30 homeruns is 2nd in the league, but he has been hot - hitting 10 longballs in just 23 July games.

In The News

July 1: By stuffing the ballot box, Cincinnati fans elected 6 Redlegs as starters for the All-Star Game. Over protests from Reds fans, Commissioner Ford Frick replaced 4 of those players, leaving only LF Delmar Yordy and 1B Ted McMurray on the team. The Reds were also represented by CF Matt Praks, who was on the ballot as a Pirate.

July 2: NL President Warren Giles proposed that fan All-Star voting be limited to those actually attending a game.

July 3: Cincinnati fans threatened to sue Commissioner Ford Frick unless Walter Davis, Ben Cook and Alton Kee are restored to the All-Star team.

July 4: The Women's Christian Temperance Union charged that baseball has become "beerball," since so many broadcasts are sponsored by breweries.

July 8: The owners decided to re-elect Commissioner Ford Frick to another 7-year term when his present contract ends in 1958.

July 18: In what was later revealed as false testimony, the Washington Senators' owner denied before the Celler committee that he had any ties to Redlegs ownership or has favored them in any trades. This accusation went back to a 1956 trade that sent pitcher Louis Schmit and outfield prospect Vasily Zimyanin to the Redlegs near the end of spring training for two relief pitchers. Two days later, Cincinnati shipped those same two players to the Cardinals for outfielder Walter Davis.

July 18: Horace Stoneham announced that the Giants will leave New York after the season. He said he has not heard anything more from San Francisco and that his move is not contingent on that of the Dodgers. He sees a new stadium or joint occupancy with the Yankees as the only reason for the Giants to stay in New York.

July 19: Testifying before the Celler committee, Pacific Coast League President Leslie O'Connor claimed that 90 percent of all good ballplayers are monopolized through the farm teams. He added that the major leagues may control as many as 1,098 players.

July 30: The Tigers lost in 10 innings to the White Sox by a 6-5 score. Detroit manager Kid Fite was ejected in the top of the seventh for making obscene gestures. Before he departed, he strolled onto the field sipping an orange drink through a straw and offered the umpires a drink. Fite was suspended for two games by the Tigers and was not in uniform the next day in Chicago, which the Tigers won 4-3 to prevent a sweep. Rumors began to swirl that Fite may resign after the season.

1957 NL "elected" All Star Starters:

C Bailey (CIN)
1B Musial (STL)
2B Temple (CIN)
SS Hoak (CIN)
3B McMillian (CIN)
OF Robinson (CIN)
OF Bell (CIN)
OF Post (CIN)

Post and Bell were kicked off the team.

Hoak and McMillian were allowed one PA then sent to the bench.

So it was more extreme in Real Life. Baseball took the vote away from the fans around this time.

August 1957

The A-Train from Kansas City just keeps on chugging along. The Athletics posted a 19-10 record in August highlighted by the return of Jackie Bowen. The 28-year-old Texan tossed a huge 4-hit, 1-run complete game victory on August 21st against the Yankees in his return to the mound after a torn tricep shelved him for two and a half months. After losing his next start against Boston, Bowen pitched another 1-run complete game victory on August 29th against the Indians.

In the NL, Cincinnati opened the month by splitting a 4-game series against league-leading Brooklyn. After that, the Redlegs went 19-6 including two huge sweeps on the road at Chicago and Brooklyn. During that run, Cincy also had a 9-game winning streak during which they outscored opponents 64-27.

In The News

Aug 5: The Brooklyn Sports Authority got an engineering report on a 50,000-seat stadium in the downtown area. It will cost an estimated $20.7 million, including the land site. Indications are that there will be trouble finding a market for the bond issue.

Aug 17: Cubs shortstop Wilbur Taylor, known for his ability to foul pitches off, hit spectator Alice Ross twice in the same at bat. The first one broke her nose and the second one hit her while she was being removed from her seat on a stretcher. Ironically, she is the wife of Earl Ross, the sports editor of the Chicago Tribune. After battling Dodgers starter Daniel McCarty through that 10 pitch at-bat in the 5th, Taylor singled. He went 4-for-5 on the day in a 12-4 Cubs win.

Aug 19: Citing poor attendance as the key factor, the Giants board of directors voted 8-1 to move to California in 1958 as San Francisco promised a new stadium in the Bayview area.

American League-Pitcher of the Month:
Bourbon Allen Jr. (NYA)!
He had a record of 5-2 in 8 games started, with an ERA of 1.80 and 2 shutouts.

He batted .388 in 103 AB, with 2 homers and 22 RBI.
What a season by the Red Sox rookie!!

National League-Pitcher of the Month:

He had a record of 7-0 in 7 games started, with an ERA of 2.85.

National League-Batter of the Month:
Scotch Allen (STL)!
He batted .364 in 107 AB, with 7 homers and 21 RBI.

very true. He'd be a great #4 or #5 hitter, having Diterich in 3rd and someone else in fourth with power and higher contact

That's a true story, too.

I just read about who actually did it, and now I've forgotten who it was.

Truth is stranger than fiction.

I commented many times before how eerily fortunate we were to have the White Sox go to the 1919 and 1920 WS's... lose in 1919 and win in 1920.

Now, just like RL, the Giants kinda stink but the Dodgers are coming of a WS loss to the Yankees with a talnted club and they're both leaving town... JUST like RL... eerie but cool.

Oh, I just finished watching the 1950s chapter of Ken Burns' Baseball. Wow what a documentary. I got it a month ago as a late birthday present, and it is just awesome.

I'm watching it right now! I've been watching it all week. Right now I'm watching Costas' interview about Mantle's death on the extra features. My personal favorite chapter is "The Jewish Kid" I think. G-d I love Koufax. Also the chapter "Curses," when Costas perfectly sums up the Red Sox:

"The Red Sox are an opera. The Red Sox are "what??? how???" The Red Sox have you looking up to heaven for an explanation.

Great minds think alike, Matt.

I think it's a bit hit and miss. One running problem is that has stretches of being too NY-centric. Granted, with the Yankees, Giants and Dodgers, the games often had stretches of being NY-centric. But in the series, that focus took the spotlight away from other stories that are important, rich and deserved their moment. The 1969 Mets are given more time than the 1966-74 O's who were... like... better. Or the 1986 Mets getting more time than the 1988-92 A's.

That was a mild annoyance, balanced out through the 1960s by lots of really good stuff in it.

I think the more major issue with the documentary is that Inning 9 covering 1970 through the very early 1990s is extremely weak. It handled two items well - Aaron's chase, and the 800th time the 1975 World Series has been pimped to high heaven. It's just too big of a period, with too many different storylines (both feel-good and critical to the game) going on to stuff into 1 episode. Since it came at the end of the documentary, it's just left a very bad taste in my mouth at the close.

John
I don't mind that stuff as much, since stuff so recent doesn't really need to be covered in this documentary style I'd have been happy if Burns decided to just end his documentary in 1975. It's the history of it, the old stuff, pre-expansion, which is the best.

And hell, I'd pay the $100 just for Buck O'Neill.

I thoroughly enjoyed the 1800s thru 1920s... my favorite periods anyway.

I agree it's NY-centric. I don't mind hearing about how the Yanks,Giants,Dodgers were so importanat & what it was like w/ the 2 teams left, but weren't there 13 other teams?

Looks like my father and uncle are doing pretty well, even though my dad took a hit in movement. Thankfully the 60's are coming up....less HR

Dang, why the sudden surge of the birds? I thought we're going to stay at the lower-tier of the standings.
