You know what else is huge? The history of Major League baseball.

If you ask me, they're both worth reading up on! Seriously, this league is unbefreakinlievable. Once you start from page 2 and start with Whiskey Allen, you'll be hooked!

I think I'll add some ancestors. My father will be a bit old, but I guess he can be a 24 year-old rookie

Just checked your sign-ups.

You could go one of two ways. Either move his birthdate up a few years to give him a longer career (there's enough room before your brother's born to make it reasonable), OR give us a story as to why he doesn't break in until he's 24. I see he's born in Mexico, so maybe he had a good career going in the Mexican league, but then decided to try the Majors. We like story lines that add depth to the league. Who knows, your Dad could end up being one of those players who gets talked about a lot on the board or on our web site.

1956 All-Star Game
Forbes Field, Pittsburgh

BOX SCORE

The hometown fans had a lot to cheer about today. Pirates outfielder William Perry hit a 2-out single in the 2nd off New York's Bourbon Allen Jr. Brooklyn SS Roger Joyce followed with another single and then Pirates rookie catcher Doug Provenzano hit a 2-run single to give the NL the first runs of the game. Yankees CF John Young scored the AL's first run in the 3rd on a sac fly from Detroit's Dennis Kitterman. In the bottom of the 3rd, the NL got that run back when another Pittsburgh OF, Matt Praks, hit a 2-out single to score Brooklyn's Mark Silcox.

In the bottom of the 4th, A's pitcher Martin Gwaltney came to the mound and received a standing ovation from his former Pirates fans. He allowed a leadoff single to Joyce but then recorded three straight outs. In the top of the 5th, the AL tied the score at 3-3 after two Yankees, Arnie Stewart and John Young, hit singles, then were sac bunted to 2nd and 3rd, and then scored on a clutch pinch hit single from Cleveland's Dave Lemmings.

The NL started to take control of the game in the 6th when Pirate William Perry led off with a triple of former Cards and Reds ace Grady Ingram, now with Kansas City. After a walk to Cincinnati's pinch hitting Delmar Yordy, Provenzano singled in the go-ahead run. Dennis Ward then doubled in another run, and Provenzano scored when fellow Pirate Ben Giordano singled him home.

In the 7th, Praks singled off Cleveland pitcher Herman Labombard, and with two outs, Yordy hit a 2-run homer. After the next two batters reached base to keep the inning alive, Giordano hit a 2-run double before Milwaukee's Rudel Dietrich struck out to end the inning.

Brooklyn's Abraham Noel hit a 2-out single off Lex Tjeenk-Willink of Cleveland in the 8th. He scored on a double by Rex Seelinger of the Giants. Yordy then singled Seelinger home, and then he advanced to 3rd on a single by Brooklyn catcher Charlie Shellenbarger. He later scored when Ward reached base on an error.

The AL managed a run in the 9th, but it was a blowout for the NL, making this the 4th straight All-Star win by the senior circuit.

Go Pirates! I think 7 All-Stars is a record for us. And at home, too. Very nice!

Quite a turnabout for Brooklyn; surely one of the more impressive rebuilding jobs in recent memory. Wonder if Detroit is sobbing into their beers over trading young Mr. Silcox away back in 1949? Sure woulda been the likely successor to the estimable Ray Kress, no?

I noticed, almost by accident, that Silcox has already racked up four cycles in his young career, including two vs. Pittsburgh in successive seasons. What is the record for number of cycles in a career? If this isnt it, my guess is that Silcox is getting really close.

COnsideirng that they got Kitterman, who has been one of the keys for their dynasty, I dobut they're crying too much. Four rings does look quite snazzy.

Besides, Silcox would only replace one hole (RF), he'd be enough to keep them in the hunt with their present crew, but he woudlnt be the difference.

Only three Tigers and only 1 started - Degal. Times have changed for sure.

It was nice to see Coleman make it.

I was especially happy to see 39 y/o Dennis Kitterman got into the game and sac flied for an RBI in this, his final season. He's hitting .340 for the year. I hope he finishes the year strong so he can say he went out on top of his game.

No Ray Kress. Guess Kress wouldn't have been able to play due to injury anyway. Only 8HR for the entire year for him and there doesn't look like much of a chance he'll be off the DL until the very last week of the season if at all.

EDIT: Mitchell was hitting .346 when he got hurt or he would have been a good call for an all star appearance as well.

Yea, Kitterman was a big pick up for us at the time. If I remember correctly we actually had a GM or two complaining after the deal was announced that we were creating a stacked roster. Four WS wins later, we have little regret about that trade.

We tried to get Silcox back a year or two ago, but that deal fell through. He sure would help right now with 2/3 of our starting OF down with injuries.
