PROSPECT WATCH, part 1

CHRIS "THE GRIMSBY LOCOMOTIVE" JOYCE
: Next to the word "journeyman" in Webster's Unabridged Dictionary should be a picture of this man. He came back from his season-ending injury looking no worse for the wear. In his 12 years in the A's rotation, fans have come to appreciate his steady output, counting on him to put up double-digit wins. He's not very good...but he's not all that bad either.

BEN "CORNBREAD" BALEYI: Cornbread may have stayed around one season too long, but his leadership may have been the intangible to lead the Phillies to their 7th straight pennant. Can they win him his 6th ring?

BOB NETSKY: 21 losses, 69 HR Allowed and a 6.78 ERA. You've gotta wonder what the Cleveland management was smoking to keep him in the rotation all season.

BOBBY BOUCHER: Boucher was traded to the Tigers as a throw-in in a 5 player deal. Surprisingly, Detroit brought him up from AAA as a spot reliever and he wasn't too bad, until they tried him as a starter. He gave up 16 runs in 14 innings in the 2 games he started, so his stats are a bit deceptive.

OSCAR "THE BLACK TY COBB" CHARLESTON: Oscar posted his best numbers since 1925 with a career high in HR, making it impossible for the voters to ignore him. He normally would be considered for Slugger of the Year, but Babe Ruth was his usual superhuman self.

PARKER "SWEET SPOT" ANDERSON: The Red Sox finished in dead last again, but it certainly wasn't this guy's fault. He set career highs in batting average, HR and RBI.

CONRAD "COOT" HICKS: Last season the Pirates came within 1 game of the pennant. This season they plummeted to 6th. Hicks had a solid year, though. Hopefully they'll get him some help soon.

FRANK "BOONDOG" ESSELINK: Esselink was snubbed last year for Slugger of the Year, so what did he do? He simply came back and won another batting title. On the last day of the season, he went down with a scratched cornea from a scuffle at the plate with New York's Frankie Frisch. Hopefully it won't affect his vision.

PROSPECT WATCH, part 2

VICTOR "THE BIG GERMAN" ULLBERG: Big Vic nearly led the formerly lowly Browns to the pennant and he may very well win his 2nd Ace of the Year Award to match the one he got in '27. We may be looking at the future champs a couple years down the line.

CHARLIE "LAZY" DENTON: How is it possible that this guy has not been chosen to an All-Star Game? He is obviously one of the main reasons the Browns are approaching the top of the standings and he could be the best leadoff man in the game today, except for some reason they have him batting 3rd.

1930 WORLD SERIES

10/4/1930 - GAME 1 TIGERS 5 - PHILLIES 6

Babe Ruth leads the Tigers with a double, a HR and 2 RBI, but it isn't enough to knock down the Phillies, who squeak by on a walkoff RBI single by Dick Porter. A controversial third-strike call in the 9th led to Pete Kilduff getting ejected. He was understandably angry. Urban Shocker owned him all night, mowing him down 4 times.

10/5/1930 - GAME 2 TIGERS 2 - PHILLIES 15

Philadelphia had 24 hits. That's really all you need to know. It was a slaughter with 4 Phillies getting at least 3 hits. We head back to Detroit with Philly up 2-0.

10/7/1930 - GAME 3 PHILLIES 2 - TIGERS 3

The Tigers get back in the Series with a 3-2 nutgrinder. The Phillies were blanking the Tigers 2-0 when Babe Ruth knocked in the first Detroit run with a triple in the 6th. Next inning another three-bagger by Ernie Orsatti netted 2 more runs and the lead.

10/8/1930 - GAME 4 PHILLIES 2 - TIGERS 6

Skinny Graham held the Phillies hitless until the 7th when they rallied for 2 runs, but by then the game was out of reach. Babe Ruth led the Tigers with a longball and 3 RBI.

10/9/1930 - GAME 5 PHILLIES 11 - TIGERS 9

Lefty Grove gets shelled in his second consecutive start, but the Tigers nearly come back to snatch victory from the proverbial jaws of defeat. Joe Stripp had a career day with a 5 for 6, 2 double performance. The Series now heads back to Philly with the Phillies needing only one win to clinch their second string of three crowns in the past seven years.

10/11/1930 - GAME 6 TIGERS 10 - PHILLIES 3

Detroit's pitcher, Buster Ross, sets the game on fire with his bat as well as his arm, batting 3 for 5 with 3 RBI. It going to a game 7 folks with a 3rd showdown between Urban Shocker and Skinny Graham.

10/12/1930 - GAME 7 TIGERS 5 - PHILLIES 6

Some teams are simply blessed by fate. Up 5-1 in the bottom of the 7th, the Tigers were beginning to imagine their rings already, but it was not meant to be. Andy High had a triple, a HR, and 4 RBI for Detroit, but it was wasted as the Phillies came back with 2 runs in the 7th and 3 more in the bottom of the 8th. The Tigers were shut down in the top of the 9th and that was that. the Phillies were once again champs.

1930 WORLD CHAMPS - PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES
7th Championship

6 in the last 7 years!!!!

SERIES MVP: Joe Stripp - .469, 3 2b, 6 RBI, 10 Runs

Has Woody moved up from 3rd base coach yet? And is he still getting his WS rings?

I had the first post for 1931 all typed up. I go to get a drink and when I came back, my wife was on the computer and she had closed the window.

"It's just a stupid game"

Jeez! If I said that about her friggin' Discovery Health shows, I'd never hear the end of it.

that's the joys of being married. you're wrong, you always were wrong, and you'll always be wrong, unless when you agree with her, then you're right.

Until she changes her mind.

I haven't really tracked the managers or coaches at all, so, sure, he's getting the rings

THE CHRONICLE - VOLUME 31, ISSUE 1

JANUARY 1, 1931:
We give up. Never again will we predict that this will be the year that the Phillies' dynasty finally crumbles. Never will we prognosticate their journey into mediocrity. We've learned our lesson. This year we confidently predict that, once again, Philadelphia will triumph and continue their amazing string of rings. Ben Baleyi has retired and Woody Woodworth is on his 3rd year as the 3rd base coach, but the magic is still there. Not only are all the NL teams lined up against them, but the AL teams have Philly in their sights as well. The World Series has been won by National League teams in 13 of the last 15 contests, 7 by the Phillies and 4 by the Brooklyn Robins. Everyone's goal is to topple the current kings of the diamond. Will the power hitters of the AL finally be able to conquer the pitching, defense and fundamental gameplay of the NL?

Prospect Watch: JOSH "THE BLACK BABE RUTH" GIBSON

For the second time in three years, our top prospect comes to us from the Negro Leagues. In 1929, Leroy "Satchel" Paige, came onto the scene and immediately had an impact, winning the Rookie of the Year that season. Gibson is a brute of a player, already being compared to Detroit's Babe Ruth in terms of power at the tender age of 19. His talent still quite raw, but we should see him in the majors by 1932 and winning the HR title by 1935.

Talents (Contact/Gap/Power/Eye/Avoid K)): 80/50/110/70/60
Current Ratings: 31/42/26/34/18
