1931 World Series results
1931 World Series: Washington Senators vs. Boston Braves
Results Game 1, October 2nd, 1931, Griffith Stadium Road Win Lifts Boston to 1-0 Lead in WS George Uhle and the Boston Braves opened the World Series in brilliant fashion, traveling to Washington and shutting out the host Senators at Griffith Stadium, 2-0, to secure an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Uhle, the Braves right-hander, threw 9.0 innings of shutout ball. Uhle gave Boston a solid start. The right-hander allowed no runs on 5 hits over 9 innings. "It has been an incredible experience today," Uhle said in the clubhouse following the game. "It's a short list of people who have started in the World Series at all, and an even shorter list who have done a good job of it." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Griffith Stadium in Washington. Braves lead series 1-0 Game 2, October 3rd, 1931, Griffith Stadium Boston Hands Washington 6-1 Loss When the stakes were high, Bump Hadley raised his game to match. The right-handed Hadley turned in a stellar performance in Game 2 of the World Series, pitching a 9-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the Boston Braves to victory. He allowed 3 hits and struck out 1. The win gave Boston a 2-0 lead over the Washington Senators in the best-of-7 series. Boston starter Bump Hadley pitched like a boss. The 5-foot-11 right-hander allowed 1 run on 3 hits over 9 innings. "We haven't stopped playing," Washington manager Jake Thielman said. "We didn't get this far to give up." The next game is set to be played on October 5th, 1931 at Braves Field in Boston. Braves lead series 2-0 Game 3, October 3rd, 1931, Braves Field Washington Breaks Through for First Win in World Series; Now Trails 2-1 The Washington Senators have closed some of the gap between themselves and the series-leading Boston Braves, winning, 6-3, at Braves Field. Senators right fielder Carl Reynolds was 4-4 with 2 doubles, 2 singles, and a walk. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2. The win cuts the deficit facing the Senators to 2-1 in the best-of-7 World Series. Chipping in for Washington was pitcher Red Lucas. He stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the fifth. For the game, Lucas threw 9.0 innings of 4-hit ball. "It was a good day, but I'm not letting my guard down," Reynolds said. "I'll let my guard down as soon as someone puts a big, fat championship ring on my finger." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Braves Field in Boston. Braves lead 2-1 Game 4, October 6th, 1941, Braves Field Almost There: Boston On Cusp of World Series Triumph After 6-3 Win The Boston Braves got a strong performance from pitcher Chief Hogsett, who stymied the visiting Washington Senators en route to a win, 6-3, in Game 4 of the World Series. The Senators could never get a bead on the left-handed Hogsett, who threw 7.0 innings allowing 2 runs. The Braves now hold a 3-1 in the best-of-7 series. With Boston leading 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Don Hurst hit a run-scoring single off Washington pitcher Joe Shaute. It put the Braves ahead 4-2. "We don't have much margin for error now," Senators manager Jake Thielman said. "We need to figure out the problem and fix it, immediately." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Braves Field in Boston. Braves lead series 3-1 Game 5, October 7th, 1941, Braves Field Boston Wins 1931 World Series! The Boston Braves were good enough to get past the Washington Senators at Braves Field today and secure the 2nd championship in franchise history. "When you wear Braves on your shirt, you're good at something," Boston skipper Jim Jones told the press. Braves right-fielder Roy Johnson was named MVP of the series after he went .435 with 1 home run and 7 runs batted in. "It feels totally incredible," Johnson said. "I could live to 1,000 years old and I'd remember this moment." The new champions capped off a great season with a 8-7 victory over the Senators to win the World Series 4-1. Braves win series 4-1 World Series MVP: RF Roy Johnson (Boston Braves) |
