The St. Louis Cardinals have promoted right-handed pitcher Luke Weaver from AAA Memphis after he pitched a re-hab start against Round Rock following an upper body injury suffered August 17.
Weaver went 4.2 innings in the 6-5 loss to Round Rock, allowing three runs on four hits in 7.1 innings. He struck out six and walked one.
Weaver will return to the Cardinals starting rotation after pitching the bullpen since near the All-Star break.
The right-hander opened the season in the rotation and pitched well going 9-3 with a 2.99 ERA before concerns about his mounting innings led to a move to the bullpen.
Right-hander Alex Reyes, who went 3-2 with a 4.28 ERA in seven starts, will be moved to the bullpen.
Right-handed pitcher John Gant will return to AAA Memphis.

After dropping two of three to the Pirates at home, the Cardinals will look to rebound against the Cincinnati Reds. Times may be getting desperate for the Birds, who at 9.5 back may be out of the NL Central race. They also find themselves 2.5 behind the Washington Nationals in the chase for the second NL wild card.

Note: Cardinals relief pitcher Alex Reyes had to leave after throwing four pitches in the fifth inning. It was later disclosed he has suffered an elbow ligament injury and will need Tommy John surgery. He is expected to miss up to 10 months. It will be th second Tommy John surgery for Reyes, who missed the 2017 season after a similar injury.

The Cardinals have confirmed that right-handed pitcher Alex Reyes will undergo his second Tommy John surgery in the next few weeks.
He is expected to be out for up to 10 months and probably not pitch again until the 2020 season.
