I think we figured out date and location.
Muzzy Field, Bristol CT, 10-19-1950 "Julie Larese, Bristol sports promoter, brought the Mickey Harris All-Stars to Muzzy Field in October. They would face the Bristol Tramps, whose roster included some former Owl players. Fourteen-hundred fans attended the game that featured future Hall of Famers: Luke Appling, Johnny Mize and Warren Spahn. Gene Woodling, a five-time World Series champion, was also on the roster." http://bristolobserver.com/2014/07/1...ost-war-muzzy/ Mickey Harris was a pitcher for Cleveland that formed a band of traveling ‘all stars’ i.e. major leaguers looking for some post season cash.

Hector Wagner (1968 - 2017)
Hector Wagner, who had 7 starts for the Kansas City Royals in 1990 and 1991, passed away on Monday (June 5, 2017), following an extended battle with stomach cancer. He was 48.
Born in the Dominican Republic, Hector signed with the Royals in 1986 at the age of 17 and began his professional career the following year. Although he had a decent fastball, Hector was more of a control pitcher and generally issued very few walks. He earned himself a Spring Training invite in 1989, though he'd yet to pitch above Class A and the Royals were encouraged by what they saw. In 1990, Hector was added to the 40-man roster. He spent most of the year with Memphis and, starting and relieving, had the best season of his career. He was 12 - 4 with a 2.02 ERA in 133 innings. He was better out of the pen than starting but, when recalled to Kansas City in September, he was used as a starter. Hector's first start came on September 10 against the Blue Jays. Both teams scored a first inning run and the score remained tied through the fourth. In the 5th, Hector surrendered 3 runs. He walked the lead-off hitter and the runs that followed were not the result of solid hits, but rather seeing eye hits and a throwing error by Kelly Gruber. So the Royals stuck with Wagner. But he was getting hit hard in the seventh and was pulled having given up 10 hits and 6 runs (5 earned) and tagged with the loss. Hector started 4 more games that year and fared poorly in most of them. His last start on October 2 was his worst. He surrendered 6 runs to the Indians and failed to make it out of the first inning. He finished 1990 with a major league ERA of 8.10. Hector started 1991 with Triple-A Omaha and pitched well enough. One worrisome sign, though...his walks were up. Nonetheless, when Mark Davis hit the DL in late May, the Royals summoned Wagner. He took the mound against the Texas Rangers on June 19 and earned his first (and last) major league win. He pitched well, giving up just 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits and walking none in 6 innings of work. It didn't hurt that the Royals scored 15 runs. Hector's second start was as bad as his first was good. He gave up 8 runs in just 4 innings, most of the damage coming in the fifth when he failed to retire a single batter. Hector still figured prominently in the Royals' plans for 1992, but a torn rotator cuff cost him the entire season. He came back in 1993 and, though his record for the year was 3-11, his other stats looked pretty good. His ERA was 3.76 and his WHIP was a solid 1.168. He walked just 14 in 105 innings. With other youngsters to protect, the Royals cut Hector loose. Some of the Spanish papers hint that Hector then pitched in Japan, Taiwan, Mexico and Columbia (offering no specifics), but the next stats Baseball-Reference shows came in 1999, when Hector pitched for the independent Newark Bears (he and his wife had settled in New Jersey). In two years with Newark, Hector failed to record a single win. He appeared in 4 games for the Pennsylvania Road Warriors in 2002 before hanging up his spikes for good. For whatever reason, the only color images of Hector seem to be on baseball cards (and I haven't seen anything out of the Vault as yet). John of Baseball-Birthdays posted a cleaned up version of a Bowman card here. Hector's Stadium Club card is from the same photo shoot and I'm not posting that one. I've adapted a 1990 Best minor league card. I was into minor league cards when those came out and, at the time, they were like the cadillac of minor league cards...mostly because they were full bleed. The card that seemed to me to have the best natural contrast or whatever was Hector's "Major League Debut" card from 1990. That was another concept set I miss. For about three years, at the end of the year, Topps issued a boxed set with a card of every player who had made their major league debut that year. I used the Mahor League Debut card for my custom (the cross-hatching you see in the image capture is not an issue on the actual printed card). |
