Robinson Moving Up?




WBA & WBC welterweight champion Sugar Ray Robinson has signed to face Britain's Ryan Rhodes at the 160-pound limit in his home city of New York next month in June.

TVKO who broadcast the Sugar Ray Robinson-Oscar De La Hoya contest has announced that Robinson's dominant knockout victory shattered the non-heavyweight record, generating $96 million in revenue from 1.6 million pay-per-view buys.

The $96 million in pay-per-view haul broke the record set by Robinson's knockout victory against Pernell Whitaker in 1997. That fight generated $48 million from a then non-heavyweight record 1.2 million pay-per-view buys.

Robinson was guaranteed $22.5 million with De La Hoya's guarantee $7.5 million, but both will earn substantially more based on their deals, especially Robinson, who negotiated to keep the bulk of the split.

Expected to earn in the neighborhood of $60 million from pay-per-view sales, Robinson's total take home of $82.5 million is the largest amount paid to anyone for a single appearance, ever, for anything.

De La Hoya despite the smaller share will still walk away with $26 million.

Ray Robinson KO 1 Ryan Rhodes




Verona, New York - In what amounted to a brief homecoming, Sugar Ray Robinson stopped Britain's Ryan Rhodes in 2 minutes 49 seconds.

Rhodes upset at the stoppage voiced his opinion, but referee Ruben Carrion was not prepared to allow what he felt was a one-sided beating to continue any more.

Robinson who had expected the bout to go a few more rounds, immediately declared that he would fight again in the city.

"I'm real sorry, I'll be out again before the month is through."

Ray Robinson KO 7 Tony Marshall




Staten Island, New York - Sugar Ray Robinson, the Harlemite, maintained his standing as the best pound-for-pound in the sport today as he toyed with the WBC's #2 ranked light-middleweight contender Tony Marshall last night.

Robinson, weighing 145¾ to Marshall's 154, boxed off the back foot and piled up the points as the bigger man's offense did little to bother Robinson.

Marshall took some heavy blows in the seventh when Robinson turned aggressor and was felled by a hard right which kept him down for the ten-count.

Robinson Talks Future




With six months still to go before the year is out, Sugar Ray Robinson has already planned it all out.

"I don't think the pay-per-view market needs more than one or two fights a year. So if I'm going to again this year, it'll be in September.

As for his recent weight-jumping, Robinson put it down to stopping himself going stale.

"My priory is still to unify 147, but I've sparred some with Laurent [Boudouani] and people are talking more and more about Bernard Hopkins.

The plan is to see meet some bigger guys and in September fight Trinidad to unify or defend against Quartey."

New York, New York - 23-year-old Sugar Ray Robinson proved himself capable at the 160-pound limit tonight as he hammered out a technical knockout victory over South African contender Giovanni Pretorius.

As the co-feature to Roy Jones Jr-Lou Del Valle, the close battle gave boxing fans an opportunity to see Robinson land the heavy artillery, get his opponent in trouble and yet still go some.

Even referee Kevin Champion wondered afterwards "I just don't know what was keeping him on his feet."

Pretorius who had never fought in the USA was ranked #4 by the IBF, #10 by the WBA and #13 by the WBC going into the bout.

Robinson Changes Plans




Fight fans across the country should get ready to see sport's biggest earner, as Sugar Ray Robinson has announced plans to make a whirlwind tour of the country as he sees out the remainder of the year.

Speaking with The New York Times, Robinson said there were over 20 weeks left in the year and he intended to fight in all 13 of the west states.

Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

"I've fought my last three bouts at home and it feels good being in front of a crowd regular again."

Santa Fe, New Mexico - Sugar Ray Robinson kicked off his quickly put together "West States Tour" as the press have christened it last night when he took on popular local favourite Chris Linson Jr.

It seems Robinson figured out right after he dropped Linson with a right less than 2 minutes of action that if he's going to give the fans their money's worth he best keep some in reserve.

The second and third he boxed beautifully as Linson tried to press the action.

Upping the tempo in the fourth Robinson was landing at will and fortunately for Linson the third man in the ring had enough sense to stop the action before he suffered any lasting damage.

Albuquerque, New Mexico - Sugar Ray Robinson, the world's pound-for-pound best fighter required less than 6 minutes of boxing last night to score a knockout over Rudy Lovato of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

A left hook to the jaw sent Lovato down for the full count.

Before he left the arena, Robinson took time to mingle with the crowd and revealed that he expected to move on tomorrow for Colorado.

Robinson - Quartey II Forced?




The World Boxing Association has pressed their welterweight champion Sugar Ray Robinson to reach an agreement with their mandatory challenger Ike Quartey.

The governing body have given the champion a deadline of September to agree terms, and for the title contest to be fought before the end of 1998.

Robinson is yet to comment on the matter.

IBF welterweight champion Felix Trinidad, who last fought in April has told why he has not fought in the five months since.

"I only want big fights," Trinidad said. "I've always taken care of myself and I'm used to the tough fights. There's no reason to fight soft opponents."
