MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
BROWNS RALLY TO BEAT INDIANS
The St Louis Browns scored 8 runs over the final two innings to beat the Cleveland Indians 11-6 in American League action. Wally Judnich homered in both the 8th and 9th innings to pace the St Louis attack. He had 3 hits and 5 rbi's on the day while fellow Browns outfielder Bruce Campbell also had 3 hits. Cleveland starter Bill Lohrman (15-3, 1.75) was rolling along until getting in to big trouble in the 8th inning. Tom Baker (12-13, 3.39) got the win.

In other American League action pinch-hitter Norm Schlueter singled in the winning run with a pinch-hit in the bottom of the 13th to lift Chicago past the New York Yankees 4-3. Danny Litwhiler's 2 run homer in the 8th inning tied the game for Chicago. In the only other game in the Junior Circuit Steve Rosar and two relievers combined on a 3-hitter as Philadelphia edged Detroit 2-1.

In the National League despite a day off the Chicago Cubs moved another half-game ahead of Philadelphia atop the standings after the Phillies fell 9-3 in Cincinnati. Joe Medwick and Ford Garrison each had 2 rbi's to pace the Reds.

Elsewhere, Pee Wee Reese had a 3 hit game as Brooklyn doubled Boston 6-3. Reese doubled, drove in a pair of runs and scored two for the Dodgers. In the other game last place New York dropped St Louis 6-2.

Today Dizzy Dean makes his first start in over a month. The Yankee hurler, who started the season 5-0, was 11-12 with a 3.56 era when he suffered an arm injury August 5th in a loss to Detroit. The 37 year old, who won 25 games in 1934, has been bothered by injuries virtually every season since 1939. As a result his career record sits at 186-138...not too bad but quite dissappointing when you consider he had 137 wins before his 29th birthday and just 49 over the past 8 seasons.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
NCAA FOOTBALL SEASON KICKS OFF TOMORROW
The rest of the division 1 teams will not see any action for two weeks but there is one game in college football this weekend. Southern Methodist travels to Santa Clara to meet the Broncos. The game will mark the college debut of sophomore QB/RB Doak *Walker with SMU. He is counted on to lead the Mustangs in to contention in the Southwest Conference, where they were 0-3-3 a year ago. Overall the Mustangs were 4-3-3 while independant Santa Clara was 2-6 last season.

That game is the only one scheduled until Friday, September 19th when there are 5 games on the docket. Most of the schools begin play the following day.

b>GOLF
PLENTY OF RED NUMBES IN OPENING ROUND AT RIVIERA
Well over half the field broke par in the opening round of the final event of the 1947 PGA schedule. Chandler Harper led the way, shooting an 8 under par 64 to enjoy a 1 stroke lead on 5 golfers at Riviera Country Club's Los Angeles Open.

This is the final regular event of the tour but there are still two more weekends of golf to come. Next weekend it is the Ryder Cup in Portland, Oregon and the following weekend will be the tournament of champions from Houston which features the top 20 money winners.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
KOLLOWAY LEADS THE WAY FOR WHITE SOX
Second baseman Don Kolloway hit a walk-off homerun with 2 out in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Chicago White Sox a 4-3 victory over the New York Yankees. The Chicago win spoiled Dizzy Dean's return to the mound for the Yankees after missing over a month due to injury. Dean looked in complete control through 7 innings before tiring in the 8th and allowing the White Sox to score twice to tie the game. He gave way to reliever Jimmie DeShong in the 9th with the game tied at 3, setting the stage for Kolloway's heroics.

In other games Bob Feller fanned 7 and improved his record to 12-9 after the Cleveland Indians dropped St Louis 5-2. Virgil Trucks tossed a 4-hit shutout as Detroit blanked Philadelphia 2-0 while the Senators pounded out 21 hits in a 14-5 win over Boston. Buddy Lewis had a 5 hit game for Washington while Les Fleming and Mike Chartak each had 4 hits for the Sens.

Just two games in the National League yesterday. In Cincinnati, Lefty Hoerst pitched his second straight complete game victory since being moved into the Phillies rotation. Hoerst and his Philadelphia teammates dumped the Reds 6-1. In Pittsburgh, pinch-hitter Jack Lohrke's first major league hit was an rbi single in the bottom of the 10th to lift the Pirates past Boston 3-2. The 23 year old Lohrke was just called up to the majors 3 days ago after being the Pirates first round pick this past offseason. The Pirates had tied the game an inning earlier on another pinch-hit rbi, this off the bat of Maurice Van Robays.

BOXING
RILEY KO'S VEGARA
Featherweight Charley Riley delighted his hometown fans in St Louis winning an easy fight with Simon Vegara by a 5th round knockout. Riley, who lost to World Champion Willie Pep in his last bout, took control of his 10 round fight with Vegara right from the start, flooring the native of Panama in the first round. Vegara recovered from that knock down but good not regain his feet when sent to the canvas for a second time in the bout 4 rounds later.

Riley improves to 24-5 with the victory and is hopeful he will get another shot at undefeated World Champion Willie Pep, whom he lost to by a 13th round TKO last month. Vegara's record drops to 38-7-2.

Tonight's big fight is in Atlantic City where heavyweight contenders Elmer Ray (23-5) and Jersey Joe Walcott (24-2-2) will meet for the first time. Each is looking at victory as a way to position himself for a shot at World Champion Ezzard Charles.

Quite nice races for the batting title with somewhat uncommon names. How are Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio or Jackie Robinson doing?

JOE DIMAGGIO
Dimaggio began his career with the Yankees in 1936 as a 21 year old. There was a lot of talent in the Yankee outfield so he had to compete with the likes of veterans Hack Wilson, Dusty Cooke and Ben Chapman along with youngster Dixie Walker for playing time. As a rookie Dimaggio was used mainly as a pinch-hitter but he hit .301 and helped the Yankees to the American League Pennant.

In 1937 he would start to push Hack Wilson for playing time, but as highly thought of as Dimaggio was, you have to remember that Wilson was an icon in New York. Hack's 489 homeruns is fourth best alltime and although his other skills started to erode quickly in 1937, Wilson still managed to hit 44 homers so the 22 year old Dimaggio was told to be patient.

Patience paid off the following season when Dimaggio was given full-time duties in centerfield for the Yankees, pushing Dusty Cooke to right where he would replace an agining Hack Wilson. Dimaggio instantly became the Yankees offensive leader and was hitting .319 with 19 homers when disaster struck. Just after the allstar game Dimaggio torn stomach muscles and would miss the rest of the season including the playoffs as the Yankees lost to St Louis in the series.

Dimaggio would make his first allstar game appearance the following season but the it appeared the injury had robbed him of some of his power. Another injury, this time to his back would force him to miss nearly a month of the season.

In 1940 the Yankees had a wealth of young outfield talent and a decision was made to deal Dimaggio in favour of keeping a 23 year old by the name of Charlie Keller. The prize the Yankees were after was a minor league shortstop by the name of Eddie Joost and Dimaggio was swapped to the Reds for Joost, minor league 3B Don Lang and veteran OF Jim Bucher. The deal would not pan out for the Yankees as Joost, at this writing now 31 years old, has played only 6 major league games and with 4 different teams.

The trade was not as lobsided as it could have been because Dimaggio, although he did make three allstar game appearances while with the Reds, never regained the hitting ability he displayed prior to his stomach injury.

Today at age 32, Dimaggio is a solid major league player but has almost no chance at becoming a hall of famer.

JACKIE ROBINSON
Prior to 1947 players had been assigned to their original teams however in the winter before the '47 season that all changed. Major League baseball in my replay decided to institute an amateur player draft and all new players to the league must pass through that draft with one exception. Since I had already done a brief article during 1946 on the player who was expected to break the color barrier in the major leagues, Jackie Robinson was granted an exemption and was 'grandfathered' to the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Just like in real-life Robinson is very old for a rookie but the 28 year old has enjoyed a solid freshman campaign. He has some decent potential but it remains to be seen how good he can become.

Here are his rookie season stats so far. He leads the National League in steals at this writing with 26, one more than Pittsburgh's Elmer Valo.

TED WILLIAMS
The reigning American League MVP, 29 year old Ted Williams appears to be just hitting his peak as a player. He burst on to the scene in 1939, winning the rookie of the year award and making the first of 9 straight allstar appearances. Williams won his only batting title in 1942 but has finished either second or third in the batting race on 4 other occassions. He has led the American League in on-base-percentage each of the last 5 years and has led his league in homeruns the past 2 seasons. The one thing he has yet to accomplish is to lead the Boston Red Sox to the American League Pennant, but that hasn't happened in Boston since 1922.

In 1940 Williams broke his wrist and missed 2 months but aside from a slight power loss it has not affected his career much.

How this wasn't voted the #1 dynasty I'll never know, but how is Oklahoma State's athletic program doing these days?

Thanks for the compliment. Much appreciated. In answer to your first question likely the wrong era for most people. I can see doing the 1940's and 50's as opposed to the 90's and 2000's limits my appeal plus these reports are likely far too long for most observers.

Ah, Oklahoma State or more precisely Oklahoma A&M. They were known as the Oklahoma A&M Aggies until I believe 1957 and just like in real life for the era they are a basketball powerhouse. In basketball I have them playing in the Big 8 because of limited editing available with TDCB. In reality they did not join that conference until the late 1950's. In football they are in the MVC just as they were in real life.

The football Aggies are coming off of a dissappointing 4-5-2 season including a 1-1 record in the Missouri Valley Conference with which they are loosely affliated. A&M will play just 2 of the 4 other schools in the conference again this season. With Georgia, Oklahoma, Denver and SMU on their schedule another losing season looks likely for the Aggies. There top player is RB Jim *Parmer who will take over for Bob *Fenimore, a first round pick of the San Diego Chargers. Oklahoma A&M also lost CB Neil *Armstrong, who was taken midway through the first round by New Orleans. *Fenimore, by the way, had a terrific NFL debut, gaining 87 yards rushing and being named player of the game in a Chargers rout over New England.

In basketball the Aggies have a storied tradition, winning 10 of 15 Big 8 regular season titles and 7 conference tournaments. They also have 4 Final Four appearances including 1933-34 when they beat Penn State 74-61 in the National Title game. In the 3 seasons prior to last year the Aggies made it at least to the Sweet 16 and finished with records of 29-8, 32-5, and 29-6. However, the bottom fell out last year and Oklahoma A&M endured it's worst season in a decade, finishing with a 15-14 record and exiting in the first round of the NCAA's.

There is plenty of optimism surrounding this season with 3 starters including Big 8 Freshman of the Year PF Jack *Shelton returning. Shelton averaged 10.1 ppg and 10.4 rpg and was joined on the conference rookie team by center Dick *Schnittker, who averaged 8.6 rebounds and points per game. Add in senior PG Lonnie *Eggleston, a third year starter and freshman Bob *Kurland, a 6'10" center from St Louis and this could be a special season for the Aggies.

If you want an NBA team to follow you might try the New Orleans Jazz who just recently signed 11 year veteran and Oklahoma A&M alum Bam Sanders. The 7'0" center played a key role on the Aggies NCAA championship team of 1934.

Other Aggies in the NBA presently are:

Eric Irizarry :Cincinnati Royals - 5th year shooting guard is a former 3rd overall pick but lost his starting role a year ago. Averaged 10.6 ppg coming off the bench though.

Noah Baldin : Fort Wayne Pistons - 6th overall pick played sparingly as a roookie with the Pistons 2 years ago. Was ready to step in as starting center a year ago before torn achilles cost him all but 5 games of the season. Hoping to be a 100% when this season begins.

Giovonni Bearce : Indianapolis Olympians - Reserve PG was taken 11th overall 5 years ago.

Charles Hale : Milwaukee Hawks - Enjoyed a terrific college career but it has not translated into NBA success. Averaged just 14 minutes per game in his sophomore pro season last year.

Nob Kirkland : Minneapolis Lakers - rookie PG was taken 8th overall this past offseason. Has decent potential.

Gene *Rock: St Louis Bombers - Taken 8th overall a year ago, the SG started 66 games and made the NBA all-rookie team. Is A&M's alltime career steals leader.

TIGERFAN'S SPORTING DAILY : SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 7, 1947

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
OLSEN WINS 22ND AS CUBS TAKE ANOTHER STEP TOWARDS CLINCHING
Major League victory leader Vern Olsen improved to 22-7 on the year by tossing a complete game 4-hitter to lead the Chicago Cubs past New York 6-1 in National League action. Olsen also had 3 hits in the game to raise his batting average to a very respectable .274. Bill Nicholson drove in 3 runs to pace the Chicago offense, including a pair on a first inning homerun. The Cubs lead on both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh now sits at 4 games after both of those teams lost yesterday.

Ernie White won his 17th game of the season as St Louis blanked Philadelphia 1-0 in a tremendous pitching duel between White and Phillies ace Charley Schanz. Both pitchers went the distance and combined to allow just 7 hits in the game. The only run came in the bottom of the first inning on an rbi single from Cards catcher Walker Cooper. In Pittsburgh, Butch Nieman's three-run homer in the top of the 7th snapped a scoreless tie and propelled the Boston Braves to a 4-2 win over the Pirates.

The other game was in Cincinnati where Pee Wee Reese and Jackie Robinson each had 3 hits as the Brooklyn Dodgers downed the Reds 7-1.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
The Boston Red Sox and St Louis Browns are still clinging to the slim chance one of them could catch and surpass the defending American League champion Cleveland Indians. The Red Sox and Browns both won yesterday while the Indians lost so Boston creeps to within 7.5 games while St Louis is 8.5 off the pace.

Earl Johnson won his 18th game and Ted Williams hit a 2-run homer to help the Red Sox past Washington 5-4. The Browns beat Cleveland 2-1 on an Archie McKain 4-hitter. In other action, Merv Connors hit a 2-run homer in the top of the ninth to lift the Yankees past the White Sox 2-1 while Detroit dropped Philadelphia 9-3.

NATIONAL LEAGUE PENNANT RACE
With 3 weeks remaining in the season the Pittsburgh Pirates clearly have the hardest stretch run of the 3 pennant contenders. The Bucs have to play 15 of their final 19 games away from Forbes Field. The one positive is Pittsburgh has far more control over it's destiny than Philadelphia does as the Pirates will finish their season with a 4 game series against the first place Cubs at Wrigley Field. Pittsburgh also has 3 games remaining with Philadelphia.

Chicago seems to have the easiest path with 18 of their final 21 games at home and 8 of the 21 are against the hapless Dodgers and Giants franchises.

BOXING
WALCOTT HAS EASY TIME WITH RAY
33 year old Jersey Joe Walcott had little trouble winning a unanimous decision over Elmer Ray in a 12 round bout at Atlantic City last night. The victory improves Walcott's record to 25-2-2 and keeps him ranked 4th overall in the heavyweight division behind only world champion Ezzard Charles, Joe Louis and Nathan Mann. With the loss Ray sees his record slip to 23-6. It was Ray's first bout since losing a 15 round decision to Roscoe Toles last January.

On the undercard heavyweight Aaron Wilson, who was born in Tennessee but is officially French, who his North American debut with a second round knockout of New Haven's Lee Hunt.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
In the lone college football game this weekend Southern Methodist blanked Santa Clara by a score of 28-0. No other teams will see action until Friday September 19th when there are 5 games including Georgia entertaining Furman.

Gerry James ran for 108 yards and scored on a 4 yard touchdown run with less than 4 minutes to play as Winnipeg remained unbeaten with a 28-26 win at Calgary. Jackie Parker had 148 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns for the Eskimos, who dominated the time of possession.

Fantastic analysis, but when I got to this name I couldn't help but snicker.

I don't own TDCB, but since the era you are playing in consists of shorter players. Does it make a difference that as you previously posted Oklahoma A&M had Bob Kurland, who at 6'10 I would imagine is one of the taller players in the country, plays against shorter posts? Or is it all about ratings?

I didn't quite know how to phrase this question, so hopefully you can decipher it.

I haven't been through here in quite some time, but gave it a look just now and ended up spending 20 minutes reading. Fantastic, fantastic work. So engrossing. Just one question. Is that really Harlond "Darkie" Clift I see on the National League leaderboards? If so...that's just another great part of this game, because his last productive year was 1942 and he was out of baseball after '45...two years prior to where you sit at.

I hope to be able to read this more regularly. Really a fine job.

Or is it all about ratings?

I didn't quite know how to phrase this question, so hopefully you can decipher it.
I am not certain how much of an impact height has in TDCB but I meant to edit Kurland's ht to 6'10" I just forgot. I do know that height plays a bigger role in the pro game I am using TPB05 so I will make sure Kurland is edited. In fact, because I am not editing heights of every college player I think I will make Kurland 7'0" just to give him a height advantage like he enjoyed in his era.

Interesting sidenote on Kurland. When I first created the college league to join my replay all I had was a list of all-americans as far as real players to add. I saw Kurland listed but no positions or other data was on my list so I made him a guard and he just completed 4 years at Oklahoma A&M. However, recently when was researching things further I realized he was 6'10" and a dominating center so I have recreated him as a freshman this year and changed the name of the old Bob Kurland in my game to Bob Kirkland, a fictional player.

Learning about players like Kurland has greatly enhanced my enjoyment of this replay but because of limited data on so many of the non-baseball athletes of the era I call this a very loose historical replay.

Is that really Harlond "Darkie" Clift I see on the National League leaderboards? If so...that's just another great part of this game, because his last productive year was 1942 and he was out of baseball after '45...two years prior to where you sit at.

I hope to be able to read this more regularly. Really a fine job.

thanks, much appreciated. In answer to your question yes, it is one and the same Harlond Clift.

I have read a few articles on him and he was one of the most underrated 3rd baseman in the game during the late thirties. In real life he becamse the first 3B ever to break the 30 homer plateau with 34 in 1938. Seven times in his 11 year career he scored 100 or more runs and 7 times he drew at least 100 walks. He was pretty good defensively as well, with his career total of 309 doubleplays being the most of any pre-1950 thirdbaseman. His career declined very quickly starting in 1943 when he contracted the mumps. He was dealt to the Senators in 1943, the year before the Browns won their only pennant. He had toiled in obscurity with the perennial sad-sack Browns for over a decade prior to that. In 1944 he fell off a horse and injured his shoulder. By 1945, when the talent level began to increase after WWII was over, his career was done.

In my all-sports replay Clift must have got a mumps vaccine and steered clear of the horses as is still enjoying success in 1947. He only spent a few months with the Browns and as a result has been rewarded with 3 World Series appearances, including 1945 when he was on the Cubs World Championship winner. He consistantly draws 80-110 walks a season which helps make up for a relatively low batting average. He has 4 gold gloves to his credit as well.

Clift hit a double and a homer in his major league debut for the Browns against Fred Fussell and the New York Yankees on April 19, 1934. However, 3 months later he was dealt to Cincinnati for pitcher Benny Frey and minor league OF Red Barnes. He would hit .313 and win his first gold glove the following season with the Reds but that did not stop them from dealing him to the White Sox for OF Mike Kreevich in July of 1937.

Clift sopent two full years with the White Sox and picked up two more gold gloves before being dealt back to Cincinnati on July 3, 1939 for pitcher Al Hollingsworth. Two weeks later he was sent back to the Windy City but to the Cubs instead of the White Sox. The Reds got pitcher Max Butcher in exchange.

He has been with the Cubs ever since, winning his 4th gold glove in 1940, making two allstar teams and appearing in 3 World Series.

TIGERFAN'S SPORTING DAILY : MONDAY SEPTEMBER 8, 1947

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE
STEELERS BLAST BROWNS 34-3
Quarterback Tom Friede passed for 253 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Pittsburgh Steelers past Cleveland 34-3 in NFL action yesterday. The Steelers are tied with Baltimore atop the AFC North after the Ravens nipped Tampa 27-20. The Bucs lost the game when QB Paul Christman foolishly threw into double coverage with less than a minute to play and the game tied at 20. Christman was hoping to get the Bucs into field goal range but instead Baltimore cornerback Torrin Goode returned the interception 79 yards for the game winning score. It was one of 4 interceptions thrown by Christman and certainly has raised speculation that second overall pick Otto *Graham will make his regular season debut at QB for the Bucs next weekend.

Kansas City and Houston are the only other 2-0 teams in the AFC. The Chiefs beat Minnesota 29-19 while the Texans did just enough to beat a weak Dallas squad 16-9.

The Detroit Lions gave the Chicago Bears a run for the money but the Bears showed the young Lions who is king of the NFC jungle. Sid *Luckman threw a pair of touchdown passes and safety Frankie Morrall had two interceptions to lead the Bears to a 30-23 win. The Lions kept it close all day but even with homefield advantage were clearly a step below the defending league champions.

Harley Mitchell ran for 119 yards and a touchdown as Philadelphia blasted Washington 27-3 in a battle of NFC East rivals. Eagles DB Marion Dulaney picked off a pair of Sammy *Baugh passes before the Redskins signal caller left the game with an ankle injury.

In other action:
Oakland beat San Diego 37-23 behind a 148 yard rushing performance from Raider back Johnny Cushing. Cushing also caught 5 passes for 34 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns.

Rookie Charles *Trippi, the ex-Georgia Bulldog star, made his NFL debut and fared quite well, throwing for 196 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead Tennessee to a 24-6 victory over Jacksonville. *Trippi was forced into the starting lineup when Manfred Gayle suffered a broken foot in the season opener.

After a terrible showing in week 1, the New England Patriots got back on track with a 17-7 victory over the Jets in New York. Rookie WR Hugh *Taylor had 6 catches for 108 yards and his first career touchdown in the win. Both the Jets and Pats are 1-1.

Heisman Trophy winner Glenn *Davis ran for 92 yards and a touchdown to help Seattle beat Miami 24-7.

Dralinn Moretti ran for all 3 touchdowns and 102 yards as the Cincinnati Bengals won in New Orleans by a 21-7 count. Moretti, in his 4th year out of Boston College, had just 2 touchdowns all of last season.

The New York Giants went through 3 quarterbacks but they did manage to defeat their ex-signal caller and the Indianapolis Colts 22-19. Bill Sweeney connected with Chuck Myers on a 40 yard touchdown strike for the winning score midway through the final quarter. Eric Poppinga was the Giants starter a year ago before signing with the Colts as a free agent. Poppinga completed 17 of 27 passes for 226 yards and one touchdown. His backup from last year, Joey Martin, started the game for New York but left with a suspected broken elbow. Rookie Harry *Gilmer was also shaken up forcing the Giants to go to third stringer Sweeney.

Rookie Frank *Albert tossed a pair of touchdown passes and looked very poised leading Green Bay to it's second straight victory, 34-13 over Denver.

Russ Davis ran for 111 yards to help San Francisco past Arizona 31-19. The Cardinals, as always, got a terrific effort from safety Booker Hasselbeck who had 2 interceptions and led both teams with 9 tackles but it wasn't enough to prevent the Cards from dropping to 0-2.

Antowain Anderson scored two touchdowns and rushed for 197 yards leading Atlanta over Carolina 17-15. The Panthers had plenty of chances to put the ball in the endzone but all they could manage was 5 field goals. Panther kicker Lionel Levy tried to make it 6-for-6 but he missed a desperation 51 yard field goal attempt for the win as time expired.

Tonight's game has the Buffalo Bills visiting St Louis to take on the Rams. The Bills were hammered 53-13 in their opener at Kansas City while the Rams lost 29-26 to Tampa.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
CARDS DECK PHILLIES ON NEAR NO-HITTER FROM HUTCHINGS
Johnny Hutchings may have lost his no-hitter and shut out in the 9th inning but he did get a complete game victory as the St Louis Cardinals beat Philadelphia 6-2 in National League action. Hutchings retired the first two hitters in the top of the ninth to get within one out of his first career no-hitter but a bloop single off the bat of Ray Sanders ended Hutchings' bid for history. Pinch-hitter Ron Northey followed with a 2-run homer before Hutchings settled down and fanned Buster Adams to end the game. Shortstop Marty Marion led the Cardinals offense with 3 hits including a 2-run triple.

Steve Gromek went the distance for the Boston Braves, allowing 11 hits in an 8-4 win over Preacher Roe and the Pittsburgh Pirates. The win improves Gromek's record to 18-9 (6-3 since being acquired from Cleveland) while Preacher Roe falls to 19-8.

Despite suffering losses the Phillies and Pirates did not lose any ground in their pursuit of front-running Chicago. Vince Dimaggio drove in 3 runs as the New York Giants beat the Cubs 5-4. In the other National League game Pee Wee Reese and Stan Hack each had 3 hits to pace Brooklyn past Cincinnati 8-6.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
The St Louis Browns took 3 games out of 4 with the front-running Cleveland Indians over the weekend. Yesterday Eddie Robinson and Milt Byrnes homered to pace the Browns to a 5-3 victory.

Boston failed to take advantage of the Indians loss. The Red Sox fell 4-3 in Washington after Morrie Anderholt delivered an rbi single in the 10th to win the game for the Senators.

In other American League action Detroit doubled Philadelphia 6-3 as Al Jurisch won his league leading 22nd game of the season. Jurisch, with a 22-9 record to go with a 3.74 era, has won his last 10 decisions. New York blasted Chicago 12-4 as Billy Johnson and Calvin Chapman each had 3 hits and 4 rbi's for the Yankees.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
New York's Tiny Bonham was named the American League player of the week after going 2-0 while pitching 18 scoreless innings for the Yankees. Bonham, who won 25 games a year ago, is 15-15 with a 2.70 era on the season. The 34 year old is a 4 time allstar and has a career record of 138-98. He is in his 8th pro season, all with the Yankees.

The National League player of the week is St Louis pitcher Ernie White. White was 2-0 with a 1.59 era and threw a shutout last week. He is 17-8 with a 2.59 era this season and is bidding for his third straight 20-win season. At 31 years of age, the 1945 NL Cy Young Winner has a career record of 94-49 and has been an allstar each of the past 3 seasons.

BOXING
ABRAMS WINS POSTWAR DEBUT
A quiet Sunday evening in boxing with just one fight of note. In Detroit, welterweight Frankie Abrams won his postwar debut with a 6-round unanimous decision over Canadian Ray McIntyre. Both fighters had seen plenty of action prior to the postwar tournament but neither elected to enter the postwar tournament and this was the first bout for each of them.

TF How do you keep this all scheduled? Do you have a master schedule and follow it (Sat Sept 4 Pittsburgh@Chicago etc. in Boxing Lightweight bout.) Somedays you have simulations in just about everything and probably somedays are a little easier. I think I can speak for all following this and say your reports set the standard. Thanks!

For baseball, football and basketball I use the game generated schedules and manually match the days up with the real calander for 1947. For college football, canadian football, the NHL, horse racing and soccer I use the real life 1947 schedules where ever possible. For boxing and golf I make the slate up myself while trying to have the proper number of tournaments in golf and realistic action for all 800-plus fighters in my boxing universe.

I tie it all together with a spreadsheet letting me know what happens each day. It real is a lot less work than it sounds. Probably the boxing is the most time consuming as I try to keep my young fighters working their way up the ranks and the contenders fighting each other.

Here is a glimpse of the spreadsheet I use.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
CARDINALS BEAT CUBS IN EXTRA INNINGS
Enos Slaughter's 2-run single in the top of the 10th inning lifted the St Louis Cardinals past Chicago 9-7 and kept the Cards slim postseason hopes alive. St Louis has won 6 of it's last 7 games but with three teams ahead of them and less than 3 weeks remaining in the season it seems highly unlikely the Cards will make the playoffs. Still, coming back from a 7-3 deficiet after 6 innings to pull out the victory gives St Louis something to build on. Infielders Stu Martin and Buddy Hassett paced the St Louis assualt with 3 rbi's each.

The Philadelphia Phillies benefited from the Cards comeback. Del Ennis hit a two run homer in the top of the ninth to seal a 5-2 Phillies win in New York moving the Phils to within 3 games of the first place Cubs. Hugh Mulcahy got the win to improve to 16-14 on the season but he suffered a minor back injury in the process and is questionable for his next start.

Pittsburgh failed to take advantage of the Cubs loss as the Pirates dropped a 6-2 decision to Boston and remain 4 games behind Chicago. Sam Chapman hit his National League leading 25th homer of the season and drove in 3 runs for the Braves.

In the other National League contest Luis Olmo had 4 rbi's and Frank McCormick 3 as the Brookyln Dodgers crushed Cincinnati 15-4.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
No changes at the top of the American League standings as the top 3 teams all won. Cleveland defeated Philadelphia 3-2 thanks to a 2-run triple from Ken Keltner in the bottom of the 8th inning and a solid pitching performance from Bill Lohrman (16-3, 1.77).

Boston beat Chicago 5-1 with Ted Williams and Babe Young each homering to lead the Red Sox. For Williams, it was his major league leading 31st round-tripper of the year. In St Louis, catcher Frank Mancuso hit a 3-run homer to lead the Browns past Detroit 5-4. The Browns and Red Sox remain 7.5 games back of Cleveland. The other American League game had New York downing Washington 6-2

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE
RAMS RALLY PAST BUFFALO 31-22 IN MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
Mike Largent's second touchdown of the game helped the St Louis Rams mount a third quarter comeback en route to a 31-22 victory over the Buffalo Bills in NFL action last night. The Bills led 22-13 at the half before Largent took control of the game in the third quarter. He gained 58 of his 128 yards on an 80 yard drive to open the second half. Largent capped the drive with a 1 yard plunge for his second major of the game. St Louis cornerback Keith Gardner also played a big role in the comeback as he picked off Buffalo rookie QB Demarco Dickinson twice in the second half.

More bad news for the 0-2 Bills as rookie tight end Hank *Foldberg left the game with an ankle injury and he could miss several weeks. St Louis QB Rod Dugas suffered a stress fracture in his right foot and although he is questionable for next week he did not miss a snap in the win over Buffalo.

BOXING
PLENTY OF BIG NAMES IN ACTION THIS WEEK
This is a very big week for boxing fans as three world title fights will be contested and a legend makes his return to the ring after suffering his first career defeat. The title fights are three days in succession beginning tomorrow night when world welterweight champion Sugar Ray Robinson faces journeyman Chuck Taylor in Pittsburgh. The fight is merely just a tuneup for Robinson who should have little trouble improving upon his 12-1-1 record. The 27 year old Taylor, who hails from Coalport, Pa., is 10-12 in his career.

On Thursday World Heavyweight champion Ezzard Charles will meet Mose Brown in Charles' hometown of Cincinnati. Charles, with a 21-1 career record, won the World title with a 3rd round KO of Joe Louis last month in New York City. His only loss had come last September against Louis. Brown, a 31 year old from Texas, is 11-17-1 in his career.

Speaking of Louis, the Brown Bomber will be back in action Saturday - his first fight since losing the title to Charles. The 33 year old Louis, with a 9-1 record, faces Philadelphia native Curtis Sheppard in a 10 round bout at The Olympia in Detroit. The 30 year old Sheppard is 16-8 but most of his wins were against subpar opponents.

The other title fight is Friday night in New York's Madison Square Garden when world Lightweight champion Ike Williams puts his 20-0 record on the line against top contender Art Aragon. A 21 year old from Los Angeles, Aragon sports a 14-4-1 record with one of his losses coming by TKO to Williams but that was over a year ago in the early stages of the post-war tournament and Aragon has greatly improved since then. Among Aragon's recent victims are top 10 candidates Maxie Docusen, Mario Trigo and Lulu Constantino. Williams last saw action in June when he defended his title against then top ranked contender Bob Montgomery.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
SEEDS ANNOUNCED FOR PRESEASON ALASKA SHOOTOUT
The third of the 3 'Preseason' tournaments has released it's 8 team field. The Alaska Shootout will be held in Anchorage the weekend of November 6-9th. Here are the 8 schools that will be participating:

1- Florida - The Gators have made it a habit of sending first round picks to the NBA but all of that talent has not been parlayed into much recent success. Last season there was positive news like a 22-9 record and a run to the SEC tournament final before losing to national champion Kentucky, but the year ended on a sour note when the fourth seeded Gators were upset by Texas A&M in the opening round of the NCAA's. Things look bright this year with all of the starters back. The backcourt will again feature Tyson Edwards and SEC freshman of the year Shaun Fluellen. Upfront there is Bill *Closs and Ward *Gibson along with recruit Harry *Hamilton who may be the best freshman player in the nation.

2- Boston College - The Eagles are coming off 5 straight NCAA tourney appearances and an elite 8 berth a year ago. They will be rebuilding this season as the only starter to return is junior SG Frank *Kudelka. There are 7 freshman on the BC roster.

3- Purdue - The Boilermakers won the Big Ten conference tournament for just the third time in their history last year. There is plenty of talent back from last season including senior PF Michael Arrowood, who averaged 15.7 ppg and 11.1 rpg a year ago.

4- Oregon - The Ducks have never missed the NCAA tournament in their 15 year history. They won it all in 1939 and made the final four in 1938 and 1944. Last season they finished 27-7 and got as far as the Sweet 16. With 4 starters returning including center Al *Groza, the brother of Detroit Lions lineman Lou *Groza, Oregon will again be a force in the PCC North.

5- Memphis - The Tigers have never made it to the NCAA tournament but this might be the year that changes. All the key contributers of a team that went 16-14 a year ago are back and all appear to be improved. A good start at Anchorage could get the Tigers on a roll.

6- Indiana State - The Sycamores have won the Horizon Conference tournament 3 of the past 4 years including last season when they finished the year with a 26-9 record. Senior center Jim Phelps is the go to man on offense. He averaged 16.7 ppg last year and was named to the All-Conference team.

7- Alabama - 2 years removed from their second NCAA tournament title, the Crimson Tide will miss the contribution of first overall NBA pick Odie *Spears but there is still plenty of talent on campus. After being in Spears' shadow, SF Harry *Gallatin finally gets the chance to call the club his team. *Gallatin averaged nearly 15 points and 10 boards a game as a junior a year ago.

8- Notre Dame - After missing postseason play for the first time in school history two years ago, the Fighting Irish rebounded with a 26-7 record last year in a season that saw them win their 8th Midwest Independant Conference title. With 4 starters back including National Freshman of the Year center Ryan Gardner, this is a Notre Dame team that may make a run at it's third ever National Championship.

The other two preseason events are the preseason NIT and the Hawaii Classic.

PRESEASON NIT SEEDS

2- Holy Cross
3- California
4- Oklahoma A&M

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE
HABS AND RANGERS MAKE 5 PLAYER SWAP
The Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers have announced a five player trade that will send center Buddy O'Connor to Broadway. Joining O'Connor on the way to New York will be defenseman Frank Eddolls, who spent all of last season in Buffalo of the AHL. The Habs get punishing defenseman Hal Laycoe along with minor leaguers Joe Bell and George Robertson.

The keys to the deal are O'Connor and Laycoe. O'Connor spent 6 seasons with Montreal and had 9 goals and 20 points a year ago. Laycoe, a 25 year old from Saskatchewan, had just 10 points for the Rangers but was their most consistant rearguard.

The Rangers feel Eddolls may be the player that tips the deal in their favour. The 26 year old has just 51 NHL games to his credit but the Rangers feel he can adequately fill in the void created by the loss of Laycoe.

KRAUT LINE IS NO MORE - BAUER RETIRES
Boston winger Bobby Bauer, one third of the famous Kraut Line, has reportedly told the Bruins he will not join the club this season. The 32 year old native of Waterloo, Ontario has decided to end his career. Bauer gained fame both before and after the war playing on a line with fellow German-Canadians Milt Schmidt and Woody Dumart. The three of them were boyhood friends and played together on the 1935 Memorial Cup winning Kitchener Greenshirts. They also won a pair of Stanley Cups together and an Allan Cup, emblematic of Canadain Senior A supremacy, while playing for the RCAF Flyers during the war. In real life, Bobby and his brother Father David Bauer, would both be enshrined in the hockey hall of fame.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
FELLER'S 2-HITTER LEADS TRIBE TO WIN OVER A'S
Bob Feller tossed a 2-hitter while fanning 8 to lead the Cleveland Indians to a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia A's. The victory improves Feller's record to 13-9. He leads the majors with 192 strikeouts. The big inning for the Indians was the 4th when the A's had two errors allowing Cleveland to plate 3 runs. The Indians remain 7.5 games ahead of Boston in the American League pennant race after the Red Sox doubled Chicago 8-4. Ted Williams had 3 hits including a pair of homeruns to lead the Boston attack. Williams has 3 homers in his last 2 games. Andy Karl picked up the victory, his 17th of the season.

Bobby Thomson had 3 hits and drove in both runs as Detroit shutout St Louis 2-0. Virgil Trucks allowed just 5 St Louis hits in going the distance for his 12th win of the season. The other game had Washington holding off New York 6-5 with Senators hurler Fred Hutchinson picking up win number 18 on the year.

NATIONAL LEAGUE
Time certainly is not on their side but the St Louis Cardinals are making a last ditch effort to get into the National League pennant race. The Cards held off a late Chicago rally to beat the Cubs for the second straight game, 8-7 was the final. Cards catcher Walker Cooper homered, drove in 4 runs and scored 3 for the winners who now trail first place Chicago by 5.5 games. The Cubs have dropped 3 straight.

Philadelphia missed a great chance to move to within 2 games of the lead after the Phillies were beaten 3-1 by last place New York. Dave Koslo (10-18, 4.09) tossed a 3-hit complete game for the win while Lefty Hoerst (6-2, 1.80) suffered his first loss since replacing the injured Max Macon in the Phillies rotation 2 weeks ago.

In the only other game Ford Garrison drove in 3 runs and Joe Dimaggio scored 3 times as the Cincinnati Reds hammered Boston 9-0. Happy Feldman tossed a complete game 5-hit shutout to run his record to 16-9.

RYDER CUP BEGINS FRIDAY IN PORTLAND
After a 10 year hiatus the Ryder Cup returns this weekend. Last contested in 1937 there had been doubts that this year's event would ever get off the ground until Oregon fruit grower Robert A Hudson came forward to fund the British team. Hudson, who is also a member of the PGA Advisory Committee, stepped up and offered his help and the use of the Portland Golf Club as the host site.

Here are the members of each club and notable accomplishments over the past two seasons.

UNITED STATES
Captain Ben Hogan - won 1946 Masters, 1947 Masters and PGA along with 5 other events. Won nearly twice as much money as number 2 man on 1947 money list.

Byron Nelson - won 1946 PGA and British Open, 1946 TSN golfer of the year. Fourth in money winners chart for 1947 but no wins.

Jimmy Demaret- Won the Western Open and finished 3rd in money winners list for 1947. Was second in this year's British Open.

Sam Snead - No wins but 12 top 10 finishes and finished second in earnings for 1947. Finished third in this year's Masters.

Herman Barron - Dissappointing season with just two top 10 finishes but did finish 5th at US Open.

Lloyd Mangrum - finished 5th in 46 US Open but struggled through 1947 finishing 41st on money list.

Ed Oliver - Won the 1947 Bing Crosby event and finished 21st in earnings for 1947

Lew Worsham - suffered through terrible 1947 season, making just 6 cuts in 17 events.

Dutch Harrison - 15th on the money list with two top 5 finishes.

BRITIAN
Captain Henry Cotton- tied for 5th in 46 Masters, was 20th in earnings for 1947.

Arthur Lees - Made 8 cuts and finished 31st in earnings. Tied for third in British Open.

Ryder Cup just days away! Yes! Been waiting on this all year long (all of 1947, that is).

Gibson swings, and a fly ball to deep right field! This is gonna be a home run! Unbelievable! A home run for Gibson! And the Dodgers have won the game, 5 to 4; I don't believe what I just saw! I don't believe what I just saw!
