1930 World Series results
1930 World Series: Cleveland Guardians vs. Cincinnati Reds
Results Game 1, October 1st, 1930, Redland Field Road Win Lifts Cleveland to 1-0 Lead in WS Bill Walker and the Cleveland Guardians opened the World Series in brilliant fashion, traveling to Cincinnati and shutting out the host Reds at Redland Field, 2-0, to secure an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Walker, the Guardians left-hander, threw 9.0 innings of shutout ball. Walker went the distance for Cleveland. He allowed no runs on 5 hits, while striking out 3 and walking 3. "It was a good day, but I'm not letting my guard down," Walker said. "I'll let my guard down as soon as someone puts a big, fat championship ring on my finger." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Redland Field in Cincinnati. Guardians lead series 1-0 Game 2, October 2nd, 1930, Redland Field Cleveland Tops Cincinnati Again, 7-6 With third baseman Red Kress leading the charge, the Cleveland Guardians got past the Cincinnati Reds, 7-6, in extra innings in Game 2 of the World Series. Kress went 4-6 with a triple and 3 singles at Redland Field as Cleveland managed to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. The most important at-bat for Cleveland came in the top of the 11th inning, when right fielder Earl Webb stroked a 1-0 fastball to right for a run-scoring double, putting Cleveland up, 6-5. "We're one game closer to our goal," Cleveland manager Oscar Purner said later. "It isn't any more complicated than that." Game 3 is scheduled for Saturday at League Park in Cleveland. Guardians lead series 2-0 Game 3, October 4th, 1930, League Park Guardians Hammered by Foxx, Drop Game 3 to Reds The Cincinnati Reds defeated the Cleveland Guardians, 10-7, in 11 innings in Game 3 of the World Series. Making an impact was first baseman Jimmie Foxx, who was 3 for 6 with a home run and a double, while scoring 3 and driving in 3. The win narrows Cincinnati's deficit in the series to 2-1. In the top of the 11th, Foxx hit a tie-breaking 2-run home run to help the Reds capture the win. "We were a little off-kilter to start the series, but we're getting things figured out now," Cincinnati manager Sadie McMahon told reporters. "At least I hope we are." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at League Park in Cleveland. Guardians lead series 2-1 Game 4, October 5th, 1930, League Park Almost There: Cleveland On Cusp of World Series Triumph After 6-2 Win The Cleveland Guardians got a strong performance from pitcher Lefty Stewart, who stymied the visiting Cincinnati Reds en route to a win, 6-2, in Game 4 of the World Series. The Reds could never get a bead on the left-handed Stewart, who threw 9.0 innings of 7-hit ball. The Guardians now hold a 3-1 in the best-of-7 series. Tied up with the Reds in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Guardians got a boost from first baseman George Sisler. With the bases loaded, Sisler saw a first pitch curveball from Milt Gaston and hit a run-scoring single to break the stalemate and put Cleveland on top, 3-2. "There was a kid in the stands with a sign that said 'Cleveland Guardians (probably) 1930 World Series Champions'," Stewart told reporters after the game. "I told him, 'Premature, but I like the confidence.'" The next game is set to be played tomorrow at League Park in Cleveland. Guardians lead series 3-1 Game 5, October 6th, 1930, League Park O'Doul Blasts Guardians, Reds Take Game 5, 7-5 The Cincinnati Reds have closed some of the gap between themselves and the series-leading Cleveland Guardians, winning, 7-5, at League Park. Reds left fielder Lefty O'Doul went 3-4 with a home run, a triple, and was hit by a pitch, while scoring 2 and driving in 3. The win cuts the deficit facing the Reds to 3-2 in the best-of-7 World Series. Cincinnati used the timely hitting of Aaron Ward to seize the win. The pinch hitter stroked a 2-run single in the top of the seventh inning to put the Reds on top, 7-5. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a game-changer. "We're happy," Ward told reporters after the win. "When you're in the playoffs, you've got to treat every game like it could be your last." Game 6 is scheduled for Wednesday at Redland Field in Cincinnati. Guardians lead series 3-2 Game 6, October 8th, 1930, Redland Field Raucous Redland Field Crowd Propels Reds to 5-2 Victory; Series Tied at 3 The Cincinnati Reds and the Cleveland Guardians will take the World Series to a decisive 7th game. In a must-win situation, the Reds beat the Guardians, 5-2, at Redland Field to force the series into what will essentially be a one-game playoff. Cincinnati left-hander Dutch Leonard had a big role in the win. He threw 7.0 innings allowing 2 runs. Cincinnati took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, when Lefty O'Doul hit a clutch 2-run home run to bring Reds fans to their feet. "They say the first rule of the playoffs is to win the home games," O'Doul said afterward. "It feels nice, but it is kind of what we were supposed to do." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Redland Field in Cincinnati. Series tied at 3-3 Game 7, October 9th, 1930, Redland Field Cleveland Defeats Cincinnati The Cleveland Guardians ignited a huge celebration as they beat the Cincinnati Reds 10-5 to win the World Series. Cleveland won the series 4-3, capturing the title for the 2nd time. "We stepped it up at the right time, and now we're the champs," said Cleveland manager Oscar Purner. "It's a great feeling." The champs finished the regular season 105-49 and claimed first place in the AL. In the jubilant clubhouse after the decisive game, series MVP and first baseman George Sisler said the Guardians have "great fans and they deserve this." "I am so happy for our city right now," he said. Guardians win series 4-3 World Series MVP: 1B George Sisler (Cleveland Guardians) |
