We are in Memphis to play a short 2 game set. They were swept in 3 games here over the weekend by the red hot Richmond Robins and have lost 5 in a row. We are 4-5 against them on the season and split a pair of games the first time we were here, April 15-16. The Mules are 4th in scoring with 4.28 runs per game (Jacksonville is #11 with 4.05). They are 9th in fewest runs allowed with 4.20 per game (Jacksonville is #8 with 4.17). We have allowed the same number of runs, but we have played 1 more game. Their run differential is +10 and ours is -16.

Norm Geiger bloops a hit to right center and Puga scores and Gorka beats the throw to 3rd... 2 to 0, Arrows. Bill Jacobson strikes out looking on 3 pitches. Tex Pollard flies out to deep left.

Top of the Eighth:
On the Hill: All-Star Bill Grant (32-L), after a perfect 7th. He strikes out the side in order!

Bottom of the Ninth:

P Arturo Flores is at 101 pitches. Top of our order is up, but the pitcher is in the #2 spot now. Glen Lewis swings at a 3-1 pitch and flies out to left... PH Charlie Faber (31-R) strikes out on 3 pitches... Brian Porter swings at a 3-2 pitch and flies out to deep right....

Lost - 2 to 0

We had 2 whole hits (both singles) and made no errors
Indianapolis had 5 hits and made no errors

That gives us 14 total hits in our last 4 games and 5 total runs in our last 6....

Manny Martinez (L 8-6) went 4+ innings, allowed 1 run, 3 hits, 1 home run, no walks and struck out 2.
RHP Roger Wallace went 2 innings, allowed 1 run, 1 hit, 2 walks (1 INT) and struck out 1.
LHP Bill Grant went 3 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 4.

Arturo Flores (W 8-8) pitched 9 shutout innings (CG), gave us 2 hits, 1 walk, 1 HBP and struck out 8. 116 pitches. Game Score of 90, the highest off all-time against the Jays....

PH Ed Diskin had a hit.

Trudy's report on Manny Martinez is a sore back this time and she thinks he will be fine in a couple of days.

Indianapolis Arrows (72-62 .537 10 GB tied for 4th place in the Northern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (59-75 .440 17.5 GB in 6th place in the Southern Division)

IND: Mark Manley (29-R) (1-1 4.74 ERA 24.2 IP, 22 H, 4 HR, 15 BB, 20 SO) vs.
JAX: Jim Baucom (21-L) (8-12 3.13 ERA 204 IP, 191 H, 15 HR, 57 BB, 131 SO) All-Star/Rookie

Manley was 3-3 with a 6.25 ERA in 8 starts last year. We faced him in April lat year, but he only pitched to 1 batter and got him out, before leaving with an injury that required surgery. On September 28, he ruptured a tendon that required more surgery and he did not make his debut this season until August 8.

Baucom gave up 7 runs (6 earned) on 7 hits, 1 home run and 1 walk with 2 strikeouts in 1.2 innings in a loss last time out.

Game Start: 2:05 PM
Ballpark: Connie Mack Stadium
Weather: 76 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 7 MPH wind blowing out to left
Attendance: 7,121

Top of the First:
Ray Stover beats out an infield hit... He steals 2nd... Bill Jacobson pops out to left. Bob Gorka pops out to 3rd. Norm Geiger flies out to deep center!

Bottom of the First:
Danny Stewart, in his first game in more than 5 weeks, leads off with a walk! He gets caught stealing.... Cal Doty grounds a double down the right field line! He gets thrown out trying to steal 3rd.... We are jinxed for some reason that I have yet to fathom.... Glen Lewis pops out to 3rd....

Bottom of the Fourth:
Cal Doty doubles to center! If he gets thrown out trying to steal 3rd, I will literally kick his heinie... Glen Lewis lines a hit to center. Brian Porter plunks one and they get the force at 2nd, 2-6, and Doty stays at 3rd... Tony Becerra swings at the first pitch and lines a hit to center and Doty scores! 1 to 0, Jays! Bert Swope grounds into a 6-4-3 double play...

Top of the Fifth:
With 1 out, P Jim Baucom walks Bill Jacobson and Bob Gorka. 4 walks allowed already... Norm Geiger lines a hit to right and the bases are loaded... The Bullpen gets up. Jimmy Ward, who is 2 for 2 with a double pops out to 3rd! Tim Bidwell swings at the first pitch and flies out to right! P Baucom is at 106 pitches and is done for the day....

Bottom of the Fifth:

Leander Gooding leads off with a walk. With 1 out, PH Mike Volkman (34-L) is sent up. Gooding steals 2nd. Volkman beats out an infield hit! Danny Stewart grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6, and Gooding scores. 2 to 0, Jays!

Top of the Sixth:
New Pitcher: Justin Reddick (30-R). With 1 out, Charlie Camilleri takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 and gets bunted to 2nd by P Mark Manley. A passed ball sends the runner to 3rd. Ray Stover pokes a 3-2 pitch just over the glove off the shortstop for a hit and Camilleri scores... 2 to 1, Jays. Bill Jacobson lies a hit to left and Stover beats the throw to 3rd... The Bullpen gets up. Bob Gorka clears the bases with a double to left center... 3 to 2, Arrows. Pia! A train ticket!

Bottom of the Seventh:
Leander Gooding swings at a 3-2 pitch and lines a hit to left and goes to 2nd on a wild pitch. But the next three make outs.... This is about as easy a pitcher to hit as we will ever see and we have 7 hits and only 2 runs....

Bottom of the Eighth:

Cal Doty doubles high off the wall in center, tying the MLB record with his third double of the game! But the next three make outs with 2 strikeouts.... Utterly ridiculous...

Bottom of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Brent Webster (35-R), their 2-time All-Star closer, who is 7-4 with 23 SV and a 3.73 ERA in 70 IP. He was 7-6 with 31 SV and a 1.98 ERA in 104.2 IP last year. 6-7-8 up for us, but #6 is the pitcher's spot. PH Marty Eades (31-R) swings at the first pitch and lines a hit to center. Pinch-runner: Frank Wendell (34-R). Leander Gooding bunts the runner up. PH Ed Diskin (38-R) grounds out to 2nd and Wendell goes to 3rd. C Garrett Bender lines out to short...

Lost - 3 to 2

5 losses in a row...

RP Justin Reddick (30-R) was sent to Daytona (A) and RP Brad Kendrick (26-R) was recalled. He was 1-1 with 1 SV and a 5.09 ERA in 17.2 IP last year with the Jays. He has not pitched for us this season.

Indianapolis Arrows (73-62 .541 9 GB tied for 4th place in the Northern Division) at

His hitting has been nonexistent. He won a Gold Glove last year for Richmond, but he has a negative Zone Rating for us... What, Stacy? Oh, Stacy says his Zone Rating has recently become positive. Still, he will not get any votes for a Gold Glove this year... Cal Doty lobs a hit to right. With 2 outs, Marty Eades triples to right and Doty scores! 3 to 1, Jays! Eades is a single shy of a Cycle! And unless we bat around here, I hope he does not get it!

Top of the Ninth:

P Jim Baucom is at 94 pitches. Charlie Faber (31-R) is in to play 3rd, so Eades will not get a chance to get his Cycle, even if we blow the lead. 2-3-4 up for the Bombers, but #4 is no longer Ivan Moreno. It is now 3B Johnny Brown (24-R). Duane Keepers, who is now playing right field, strikes out! Mickey Lynn, who had 4 hits yesterday and has 2 of Buffalo's 4 hits today, grounds out to 2nd! Johnny Brown draws a walk... And that brings up Frank Cohen and his 25 home runs, who can tie the game with #26.... He swings at a 2-2 pitch and grounds out to short and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Jays!

Won - 3 to 1

The 9 game losing streak is over!

We finish the season series with Buffalo 4-4.
We were 2-6 last season.

Jim Baucom sets a new team record with his 9th win!
Though he still has a losing record...

We had 7 hits and made no errors
Buffalo had 4 hits and made no errors

Jim Baucom (W 9-12) went 9 innings (CG), allowed 1 run, 4 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk and struck out 4. 115 pitches.

Danny Belsky (L 13-8) went 7 innings, gave us 2 runs, 5 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks and struck out 5.

LF/CF Cal Doty had 2 hits with a double and scored a run. 3B Marty Eades hit a double, a triple and his 16th home run of the season, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBI. 2B Leander Gooding had 2 hits with a double.

The Louisville Colonels are here to play a 3 game series over the weekend. They just split 4 games at home with Ottawa. Before that, they won 3 of 4 in Syracuse. We are 5-6 against them on the season and won a pair of games the last time they were here, May 21-22. They are 15th in scoring with 3.56 runs per game (Jacksonville is down to #12 with 3.91). They are also 15th in fewest runs allowed with 4.49 per game (Jacksonville is #9 with 4.21). Their run differential is -131, 2nd worst in the League, and ours is -42.

Louisville Colonels (59-82 .418 22 GB in 7th place in the Southern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (60-80 .429 20.5 GB in 6th place in the Southern Division)

LOU: Xavier Cervantes (33-R) (7-13 5.46 ERA 143.1 IP, 189 H, 15 HR, 42 BB, 62 SO) vs.
JAX: Dalton Hartman (26-R) (3-5 4.74 ERA 93 IP, 106 H, 11 HR, 28 BB, 40 SO)

Cervantes is 0-1 in 2 starts against us this season with a 12.46 ERA and only 4.1 IP. We knocked him out of the box early in one game and he left early with an injury in the other. 9 H, 0 HR, 4 BB, 0 SO.

Hartman gave up 3 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks with 3 strikeouts in 7 innings last time out in a loss.

Top of the First:
Danny Rosas swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds a hit up the middle. Ray Lovell swings at the first pitch and grounds into a force at 2nd, 3-6. Dick Pavlov grounds into 4-6-3 double play!!

Bottom of the First:
Glen Lewis grounds out to 2nd. Danny Stewart draws a walk. He steals 2nd! Cal Doty grounds out to short. Marty Eades strikes out on 3 pitches....

Top of the Second:

With 2 outs, Gilmer Duncan lines a hit to left and steals 2nd. Ron Duggins pokes a hit to center and Duncan scores... 1 to 0, Colonels.

Top of the Third:
With 1 out, Danny Rosas beats out an infield hit and steals 2nd. Ray Lovell triples to center and Rosas scores... 2 to 0, Colonels. Dick Pavlov flies out to deep right and Lovell tags up and scores. 3 to 0, Colonels.

Bottom of the Third:
Bart Daw draws a walk and P Dalton Hartman bunts him to 2nd. With 2 outs, Danny Stewart beats out an infield hit, our first hit of the game. Cal Doty lines a hit to left and Daw scores! 3 to 1, Colonels. Marty Eades pops one up to shallow right, but Ray Lovell has the ball hit off the heel of his glove for a 2 base error and Stewart scores! 3 to 2, Colonels.

Top of the Fourth:
With 1 out, Gilmer Duncan, who is a .200 hitter against everyone else, but a .300 hitter against us, swings at the first pitch and lines a hit to right center. He tries to steal 2nd, but C Bert Swope throws him out! Ron Duggins grounds one to short, but Bart Daw throws the ball away for a 2 base error... We walk Graham Carr intentionally. P Xavier Cervantes lines a hit to right and Duggins scores... 4 to 2, Colonels.

Bottom of the Fourth:
With 2 outs, Bart Daw lines a hit to left and steals 2nd. PH Mike Volkman (34-L) beats out an infield hit. Glen Lewis lines a hit to right center and Daw scores and Volkman goes to 3rd! 4 to 3, Colonels. Danny Stewart beats out an infield hit and Volkman scores! Tie Game: 4 to 4!

Top of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Brad Kendrick (26-R). Ron Duggins doubles to center... The Bullpen gets back up. Graham Carr lines a hit to center and Duggins scores... 5 to 4, Colonels. PH Lee Brand (27-L), batting .273 with 11 HR and 26 RBI in 260 AB, takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... Pia! A train ticket! Oh, right! Daytona's season is over. Well, get him a bus ticket, then. Anywhere! Out of Town! Call to the Bullpen: Barry Short (33-R). Ed Diskin (38-R) is in to play 3rd in a double switch. Marty Eades moves to 1st. P Short balks the runners up.... Glen Lewis beats out an infield hit. Danny Stewart flies out to right... Cal Doty grounds out to 2nd and Lewis goes to 3rd... Marty Eades draws a walk, but we do not need him to walk, we need him to hit a home run... Because now is the pitcher's spot and all we have on the bench is Garrett Bender, Charlie Faber and Rob Worms, none of whom can hit right-handers at all... Garret Bender (28-R) has the least odious numbers, so he is sent up. He swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 2nd... I cannot wait for this season to be over....

Lost - 6 to 4

No winning record for us this year...
From the beginning, I did not expect us be any better than we are right now.
But, I admit, there was a beautiful stretch there, where I thought we might end up with a lot better record...

We had 9 hits (all singles) and made 1 error

RP Brad Kendrick (26-R) was sent back to Daytona (A). To their roster, at least. RP Robbie Hopley (28-R) was recalled. Also, in an effort to jump start the offense, we recalled 1B Jack Washburn (20-L) and sent CF Frank Wendell (34-R) down, though we invited Frank to stick around with the team and help coach, because we will want him back as soon as Danny Stewart gets hurt again.

Louisville Colonels (60-82 .423 21 GB in 7th place in the Southern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (60-81 .426 20.5 GB in 6th place in the Southern Division)

If we lose today, we drop to 7th place...

LOU: John Wilson (27-R) (2-9 5.05 ERA 82 IP, 82 H, 2 HR, 45 BB, 47 SO) Rookie vs.
JAX: Danny Coreano (23-L) (5-13 4.33 ERA 135 IP, 165 H, 10 HR, 43 BB, 62 SO) Rookie

We have not faced Wilson before. His stats do not look like they belong to a 5.05 ERA.

Coreano gave up 2 runs on 8 hits, 1 home run and 3 walks with 1 strikeout in 5.1 innings last time out in a no decision that we lost.
