Kingman was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He went 2 for 5 with 2 home runs, while adding 3 RBI and scoring twice. Ken Kravec earned the win to go to 2-3. He allowed 4 earned runs on 6 hits, with 3 walks and 2 strikeouts. The Cubs bumped their record to 27-18 with this latest triumph.
A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. In the top of the seventh, with the game tied, Ken Reitz was at the plate when Chicago scored 1 on an error. New York Mets starter Pat Zachry turned in a sterling performance against the Cincinnati Reds, leading his team to a slim 3-2 win. Reliever Terry Leach picked up the win. His record improves to 3-4. Doug Bair took the loss. The Mets got a big at-bat from second baseman Wally Backman. For the game, Backman was 1-1 with a double and a walk.
