Cincinnati Reds C Pat Emmel was 2 for 3 with 2 HRs and 5 RBIs in a 8-7 win over the Phillies. The 25 year old is now hitting .252 with 24 HRs and 54 RBI's in 69 games. Emmel was a 1978 NL All Star and finished 2nd in NL Rookie of the Year award voting in 1977.

Did the Montreal Expos find their next CF ? The Montreal Expos have signed international free agent Dwaine Dorrian, the 16 year old is orginally from Jamaica. The Expos scout is extremely high on him, as a plus contact hitter, with raw power. He is projected to be an elite starting CF.

The Kansas City Royals have been given a deep blow to their World Championship hopes, CF David Sanchez has been diagnosed with a fractured elbow and will miss the remainder of the season. The Expos will go with RHP Eric Marks, the 30 year old is 7-8 with a 3.09 ERA in 17 games including 16 starts. The Expos rode another good pitching performance to a 3-1 win and extended the winning streak to 7.

Jim Pearcey was the player of the game and is now 3-4 with a 2.49 ERA in 28 games including 7 starts. The Expos are 6-1 in those 7 starts while Pearcey has had 5 quality starts. Pearcey is in just his 2nd season in the MLB, last year he was 4-3 with a 3.96 ERA in 9 starts.

Expos LF Yue-Jiu Zhou got things going with his RBI single in the 6th to get the Expos on the board.

Expos RF Donato Bem hit his 2nd triple as an Expos which also delivered an RBI in the 6th. CL Aidan Beasley collected his 24th save, but it was not an easy one as gave up a hit and a HBP.


Cincinnati Reds 2B Gary Green was named the NL Player of the Week. The 23 year old is hitting .298 with 6 HRs and 29 RBIs in 64 games. This is Green's 2nd season in the MLB, last year he hit .255 with 3 HRs and 9 RBIs in 52 games for the Reds.

Minnesota Twins 1B Armando Zamora was named the AL Player of the Week. The 25 year old is hitting .289 with 13 HRs and 44 RBIs in 67 games. This is Zamora's 3rd season in the MLB, he previously had a career high .252 batting average in 1976 when he also had 2 HRs and 6 RBIs in 31 games with the Twins.

The 25 year old Hernanez is now 9-6 with a 2.85 ERA in 20 starts. In his 4th season in the MLB, Hernanez had a previous career best 3.01 ERA in 1976 when he was 11-6 in 20 starts for the Expos.

The Montreal Expos (46-39) take their 8-game winning streak on the road to the Philadelphia Phillies (31-54). The Expos are 3-3 with the Phillies this year. Montreal will send LHP Jordan Hall to the hill, the 27 year old is 6-3 with a 3.32 ERA in 18 starts. Hall has been a pleasant surprise for the Expos and is part of the NL East's lowest starters ERA. The Phillies will counter with LHP Jim Graham, the 25 year old is 2-0 with a 3.24 ERA in just 3 starts this year. Graham has seen limited action this year due to a series of injuries.

The Expos did not get the offense they hoped for, but they certainly took advantage of the Phillies fielding woes in the top of the 3rd when they scored 2 runs on 2 hits with 2 Phillie errors and the Expos left the bases loaded. The Expos runs were all scored without a RBI credited by a hit. (2 walks, 1 HBP and an error)

C Mark Inge came into the game in the 8th as a defensive sub, and became the player of the game with his 2-run HR in the top of the 13th with 1-out. It was Inge's 1st HR as an Expos. The 30 year old is now hitting .212 with 3 HRs and 17 RBIs in 60 games this year with the Expos (8) and Pirates (52). This is Inge's 9th season in the MLB, his career high batting average was in 1976 when he hit .233 with 13 HRs and 43 RBIs in 84 games for the Dodgers.

Expos CF Danny Plantz collected his 20th SB of the year. Expos RHP Mark Holmgren gave up a game tying HR in the bottom of the 9th to get his 1st blown save of the season. RHP, Mark Upton got the final 5 outs for his 1st MLB career win and is now 1-0.

The Montreal Expos (47-39) continue on the road with the Philadelphia Phillies (31-55). The Montreal lead the seasonal series 4-3 and will have LHP Jim Lea on the mound. The 26 year old is 5-3 with a 3.56 ERA in 13 starts for Montreal. The Phillies have RHP B J Loring going today, the 27 year old is 1-2 with a 6.41 ERA in 6 games, including 5 starts. Loring was called up from AAA where he had a 2.04 ERA in 10 starts.

Well you knew the streak was going to end sooner or later. It was one of those oddities for Montreal when they did not get a good start out of their starter. The Expos winning streak was snapped at 9 games.

Philadelphia got a big blow by Sean Price, his Grand Slam HR in the 2nd was enough to end Jim Lea's day and make the score 6-0. Price is now hitting .265 with 13 HRs and 47 RBIs after his 1 hit, 3 walk and 5 RBI day. Price is in his 9th season in the MLB, the 30 year old had a career best .312 batting average in 1972 when he also had 12 HRs and 45 RBIs in 98 games.

Expos 2B Mat Garnett hit his 2nd triple of the season. Expos SP Jim Lea falls to 5-4 on the season.


Cincinnati Reds C Pat Emmel was 2 for 3 with 2 HRs and 2 RBIs in a 4-3 loss to the Padres. The 25 year old is now hitting .250 with 26 HRs and 56 RBIs in 74 games. Emmel is in his 2nd season in the MLB and he set a career best with 26 HRs besting the 15 he hit in 1977 when he also hit .198 with 52 RBIs in 78 games for the Reds.

The Montreal Expos (47-40) will complete the series with the Philadelphia Phillies (32-55) in game three. The seasonal series is tied at 4-4. The Expos will send out RHP Eric Marks, the 30 year old is 8-8 with a 2.88 ERA in 18 games including 17 starts. Marks has won his last 3 starts allowing 11 hits, 1 run and striking out 14 over 21.2 innings. The Phillies will go with RHP Wyatt Myers, the 35 year old is 5-9 with a 4.60 ERA in 17 starts.

The Expos quickly got back on the winning track and used the offense to win a game.

Despite the offense, the Expos still had their SP as the player of the game. Expos SP Eric Marks is now 9-8 with a 2.81 ERA in 19 games including 18 starts. Marks pitched a career high 144.1 innings in 1974 for Montreal, that season he was 7-7 with a 3.18 ERA in 21 starts.

Gilberto Luna who is tied for 6th in the NL with 21 doubles, had a critical hit with a 2 run double in the top of the 3rd. The 1-out hit but the Expos up 4-0.


Houston Astros SP Justin Bergman allowed 4 hits and struck out 8 over 7 innings in a 4-2 win over the Dodgers. The 34 year old now is 11-3 with a 2.73 ERA in 19 starts. Bergman was part of the 1969 MLB allocation draft to the Astros. In April 1969 he was named the MLB's #16 ranked prospect.

The San Francisco Giants (43-45) are in Montreal to face the Expos (48-40). With 12 games left in the schedule for the Expos, they hold a 5 game lead in the NL East. The Expos are just 2-4 against the Giants this season. The Giants will go with LHP Al Hewitt, the 31 year old is 4-4 with a 3.95 ERA in 18 starts. Montreal goes with RHP Jim Pearcey, the 25 year old is 3-4 with a 2.49 ERA in 28 games including 7 starts. Since going back into the starting rotation, Pearcey is 3-1 and the Expos are 6-1. Cuellar was a scout find for the Giants out of Puerto Rico in 1972. In April 1976, he was named the #12 MLB prospect.

With the bases loaded in the 1st, Cuellar hit a 2 run single to give the Giants an early 2-0 lead.

Oakland Athletics RF Omar Bravo was 3 for 3 with a HR and 3 RBIs in a 4-2 win over the Yankees. The 25 year old is now hitting .317 with 25 HRs and 78 RBIs in 88 games. Brave was signed to a minor league contract by the Athletics in November 1969. He was ranked the #11 MLB prospect in April 1974.

How good where the starting pitchers? The first hit of the ball game by either team was in the bottom of the 6th by Expos 2B Fumiya Watari. So you knew one of these starters would be the player of the game, well it was the winning pitcher Eddie Hernanez.

The 25 year old Hernanez is now 10-6 with a 2.77 ERA in 21 starts. Hernanez was originally a free agent signing out of Mexico by the Royals in October 1969. He was acquired in trade by the Expos from the Royals along with LF Yue-Jiu Zhou in May 1972. In April 1975, Hernanez was ranked as the MLB's #24 prospect.

A big hit for the Expos was PH/3B Gilberto Luna coming off the bench in the 7th and he hit an RBI single that put the Expos up 2-1.

The Giants had bases loaded and 0-outs in the top of the 9th, LHP Robbie Jones came on to get a double play ball that delivered 1 run but got the next hitter to fly out to CF as the Expos held on for the win and Jones picked up his 1st save of the season bailing out CL Aidan Beasley who had allowed a hit and walked 2 to start the 9th.

The San Francisco Giants (44-46) play the final game of a three game series with the Montreal Expos (49-41). The Giants have won 5 of 8 so far this season against Montreal. San Francisco will start RHP Andrew Scott, the 28 year old is 4-4 with a 4.38 ERA in 25 games including 10 starts. Montreal counters with LHP Jordan Hall, the 27 year old is 6-3 with a 3.38 ERA in 19 starts. The Expos went into the 9th with a 3-2 lead but CL Aidan Beasley allowed 3 hits and a walk in 0.2 of an inning, giving up a 3-run HR to blow his 4th save and fall to 2-3 on the year. In his last two appearances, Beasley's line is 0.2 IP, 4 hits, 4 runs, 4 ERs, 1 HR, 3 BBs and 2 Ks.

Expos SP Jordan Hall on the other hand was the player of the game. The 27 year old left with a lead but did not get a decision today. Hall is now 6-3 with a 3.19 ERA in 20 starts. Hall was originally drafted by the Pirates in the 1970 MLB draft, 5th round 106th overall but failed to sign. He was drafted for a second time by the Giants in the 2nd round 56th overall in the 1971 MLB draft. He was traded to the Expos in July 1977.

Cortes was originally signed as a Internation Free agent from Nicaraqua by the Athletics in July 1969. He was named the MLB's #1 prospect in April 1970. The Athletics traded Cortes to Houston along with current Expos CL Aidan Beasley in October 1971. In April 1973, Cortes was again named the MLB's #1 prospect.

Detroit Tigers LF Danny Delgado was named the AL Player of the Week. The 28 year old is hitting .277 with 10 HRs and 39 RBIs in 89 games. Delgado entered the MLB as an International Free agent from Dominican Republic. He was signed by the Tigers in October 1977.

Montreal will start LHP Jim Lea, the 26 year old is 5-4 with a 4.16 ERA in 14 starts. His last start he would like to forget as he lasted just 1.2 innings giving up 6 runs. The Padres go with RHP Aaron Stovall, the 33 year old veteran is 3-6 with a 2.89 ERA in 19 starts. The Padres have lost their last 4 games.

Padres SP Aaron Stovall was the player of the game, the 33 year old is now 4-6 with a 2.74 ERA in 20 starts. Stovall was part of the 1969 allocation draft and was selected by the Red Sox. In October 1972 he signed as a free agent with the Padres for the 1973 season. In November 1974, Stovall was traded to the Royals in a deal that included current Expos LF Alex Gomez.. Stovall then became a free agent again and signed back with the Padres for the 1976 season.

Padres Mario Mejia put the Padres up 3-1 with a run scoring double in the 4th with 2 out, that seemed to put the game out of reach as the Expos could not convert base runners into runs.

Expos RF Donato Bem had 2 SB's his 25th and 26th as an Expos, giving him 30 on the season. CF Yue-Jiu Zhou had 2 swipes as well his 20th and 21st of the year. With the loss, Jim Lea falls to 5-5.

Houston Astros 3B Gregorio Cortes was 2 for 4 with 2 HRs and 5 RBIs in a 6-5 win over the Pirates. The 26 year old is now hitting .332 with 23 HRs and 81 RBIs in 90 games. Cortes was originally signed as a free agent out of Nicaragua in July 1969 by the Athletics. He was traded to the Astros after the 1971 season. Cortes was named the MLB's #1 prospect in April 1973.

Los Angeles Dodgers C Matt Aston collects his 200th HR today in a 2-1 win over the Braves. The 34 year old is hitting .251 with 14 HRs and 37 RBIs in 81 games this season. Aston was originally part of the 1969 allocation draft by the Pirates. He remained in Pittsburgh until the end of the 1976 season when he signed as a free agent with the Dodgers. Besides his 200 HRs, he has 933 hits, 557 RBIs and a .305 batting average over 830 MLB games. In 1975 he lead the NL with 68 RBIs when he hit .312 with 21 HRs in 86 games with the Pirates. Aston twice hit 24 HRs, in 1971 and 1974 both with the Pirates. Aston is a 10 year All Star, he has won 1 Gold Glove and 7 times the Best hitter at C. He has been twice voted 2nd for the NL MVP award.

Bem was originally signed by the Cardinals as a International free agent by out of Venezuela in 1969. In January 1970, Bem was traded to the Astros. In April 1970 he was named MLB's #70 prospect. It looked like a typical Expos game, great pitching but a lack of clutch hitting. Had 11 runners stranded, could not take advantage of 12 walks...... yes 12 walks. Then in the bottom of the 9th, the Expos tie it with a RBI single by Donato Bem after Yue-Jiu Zhou singled and stole 2nd. Bem gets caught stealing but then with 1-out Darren Maher reaches 1st via an error. C Mark Inge moves Maher to 2nd with his single setting up rookie CF Alex Gomez with 2 runs on and 1-out. He drives the 3-2 pitch into the RF bleachers for his 1st career MLB HR and a walk off win.

Expos SP Jim Lea was the player of the game but without a decision. The 26 year old is now 5-5 with a 4.11 EA in 16 starts. Last year Lea was 3-1 with 1 save, a 2.98 ERA in 43 games with the Expos (9) and Mariners (34).

It looks like Gomez could be a regular with the Expos in 1979.
