The idea of the home run tournament thing, going from 128-64-32-16-8-4-2-one home run champion, is very exciting, and I really can't wait for it, but how exactly are the qualifiers going to face off?

I actually ended up trying several different ways before I found a method that I liked, but everyone was seeded into 32 brackets, with 9 players per team. All other batters were removed from the team, and after playing 100 games the top four home run totals would advance. It seemed to work pretty well, with the cream rising to the top most of the time. There were still some surprises though, and enough variations from test to test to make things interesting I think.

1979 (Part 2)- Winters/Kubel hit 400th

Random Debut:

Name: Jason Kubel.jpg
Views: 163

Jason Kubel joined the 400 club this season. Kubel hit 134 home runs in real life.

Name: Matt Winters.jpg
Views: 206
Size: 16.3 KB

Matt Winters also joined the 400 club this season as well. Winters hit just 2 home runs in the majors, but did have some success over in Japan, hitting 30 or more home runs during his first four seasons over in Japan.

Name: Chuck Buheller.jpg
Views: 179
Size: 16.0 KB

Chuck Buheller retired from baseball with 775 home runs.

Name: Nate Colbert.jpg
Views: 189
Size: 16.5 KB

Nate Colbert also retired with 447 home runs.

With the watch list growing longer and longer, two players were removed from the watch list - Jack Clark who has 260 home runs at the age of 35, and Bo Jackson with 191 home runs at 34. Neither have a legitimate chance to reaching 400.

Mike Diaz was added to the watch list and currently has 130 home runs at the age of 21.

Name: Louis Santop.jpg
Views: 204
Size: 16.8 KB

Louis Santop led all players with 64 home runs this season. While total home runs were about the same between the league, the top players seem to be hitting more in the random debut which is leading to the higher career totals. We'll see if that trend continues, but other than seeding in the final home run derby it shouldn't make much difference.

1980 (Part 1)- Tony Horton hits 400th

5 Year Recalc:

Name: Tony Horton.jpg
Views: 194
Size: 15.9 KB

His best days may be behind him, but Tony Horton hit career home run number 400 this season. Horton hit just 76 home runs in real life, so even in the recalc crazy things can happen.

Name: Reggie Jackson.jpg
Views: 203
Size: 16.1 KB

Reggie Jackson finished third this year with 43 home runs and finished the season with 541 home runs, joining the 500 club.

Name: Darrel Evans.jpg
Views: 189
Size: 16.3 KB

Real life 400 club member Darrel Evans passed 300 career home runs. Evans is a two-time failure, and hasn't put up big numbers each year, but at 33 he still has a shot to reach 400.

Name: Rick Monday.jpg
Views: 180
Size: 16.3 KB

Rick Monday is one year older than Evans, and finished the year with 3 more homers becoming the second player to join the 300 club this year. I'm not sure how much faith I have in him reaching 400 though. Monday hit 241 home runs in real life.

Name: Oscar Gamble.jpg
Views: 180
Size: 16.2 KB

Oscar Gamble also barely moved past 300 home runs this season, finishing with 302. Gamble hit 200 home runs in real life, and I always liked him growing up so I'll be rooting for him to get those last 98 homers.

1981 (Part 1)- Ken Phelps leads the league

5 Year Recalc:

Name: Ken Phelps.jpg
Views: 182
Size: 16.5 KB

Ken Phelps was back on top of the season leaderboard after hitting 46 home runs. Phelps hit 123 home runs in real life.

Name: Dick Allen.jpg
Views: 162
Size: 16.7 KB

Dick Allen retired with 370 home runs, falling short of 400 career homers. Allen will be represented in the final home run derby though based on his success in the original version when he hit 440.

Name: Dave Kingman.jpg
Views: 175
Size: 16.0 KB

Dave Kingman moved past 300 career home runs this year.

Name: Ron Bloomberg.jpg
Views: 171
Size: 16.2 KB

Ron Bloomberg also reached 300 career home runs in 1981.

Name: Cal Ripken.jpg
Views: 160
Size: 15.9 KB

Cal Ripken, Jr. made his debut hitting just 2 home runs. We'll see if Ripken can reach 400 for the first time this round, as every other member of the 400 club has done so far, although Yastrzemski looks iffy to me at this point. Ripken is the type of player that seems to struggle when I do this though since he'll need to have a long steady career.

Name: Jumbo David.jpg
Views: 187

Jumbo Davis played in the 1800's, so his career home run total of 14 wasn't impressive, but Davis became one of two players to reach 400 career home runs.

John Vander Wal also hit his 400th career home run. Vander Wal hit just 97 home runs in real life.

Holy Cow! That Bond's total is unreal!
I'm surprised he retired before reaching a nice round 1,000. That's so unlike him.

And please do something about my boy Petagine. Only 4 HR to reach the 500 club.

They are at least slightly elevated, but still an impressive total. I'm glad he walked away when he did!

Well, I will tell you Petagine will be back for not just one, but two more years. He's not what he used to be though, so it will be a limited role.

1982 (Part 1)- Schmidt and Bench hit 400th

5 Year Recalc:

Name: Mike Schmidt.jpg
Views: 176
Size: 16.0 KB

Mike Schmidt reached 400 career home runs this season and now has been successful in each version I've attempted. Given the struggles others faced in round 2 that's a pretty impressive feat.

Name: Johnny Bench.jpg
Views: 144
Size: 16.7 KB

Johnny Bench also joined the 400 club this year. Bench came real close in real life with 389 career home runs.

Name: Greg Luzinski.jpg
Views: 151
Size: 15.7 KB

Greg Luzinski joined the 300 club at the age of 31. He's in good shape to reach 400, but we'll see whether the early end to his career in real life effects the Bull.

Name: John Mayberry Sr.jpg
Views: 159

John Mayberry, Sr. is 33 and finished the year with 329 home runs. Mayberry hit 255 home runs in real life.

1982 (Part 2)- Reiger retires

Random Debut:

Name: Frank Reiger.jpg
Views: 152
Size: 16.9 KB

Frank Reiger retired with exactly 800 career home runs, the third highest total in the random debut league. While Reiger retired young, he was a very one dimensional player. Reiger hit .241 for his career.

Name: Jason Kubel.jpg
Views: 149
Size: 16.1 KB

Jason Kubel also retired with 418 career home runs. Unlike Kubel, Nick Johnson failed to reach 400 career home runs and retired just 18 shy, with 382 career homers.

Name: Matt Winters.jpg
Views: 151
Size: 16.3 KB

Matt Winters moved past the 500 home run mark this season.

Name: Carlos Ponce.jpg
Views: 142
Size: 17.2 KB

29 year old Carlos Ponce joined the 300 club this year, and we'll now keep an eye on him with 322 home runs.

Yancy Davis also hit career home run number 300 this year. Davis is only 26 and now has 328 home runs. Davis didn't hit any home runs in real life in the majors, but did hit 208 in the minors. He shouldn't have much difficulty reaching 400 in his career though.

Name: Bullet Rogan.jpg
Views: 133
Size: 15.4 KB

Bullet Rogan had a very impressive rookie year hitting 53 home runs. Rogan is another Negro League player and joins Louis Santop and Mule Suttles as Negro League sluggers at the top of the home run list.

1983 (Part 1)- Yastrzemski reaches 400

5 Year Recalc:

Name: Carl Yastrzemski.jpg
Views: 136
Size: 16.2 KB

I've kind of expected Yastrzemski to fail, but this year he reached 400 career home runs, and even added 15 more. It's officially the end for Yaz though as he called it quits following the season. I was expecting him to be the first failure of the real life 400 club, but he surprised me in the end. Of course with recalc we should see more successes than failures.

Name: Tony Horton.jpg
Views: 144
Size: 15.9 KB

Tony Horton retired from baseball with 442 home runs. Horton hit 76 in real life.

Name: Reggie Jackson.jpg
Views: 137
Size: 16.1 KB

Reggie Jackson passed 600 career home runs this season. Jackson now has more than his real life total of 563 homers.
