2010 Texas Rangers vs 1977 New York Yankees

1977 New York Yankees
Round 1: Defeated 1950 Phillies 3 games to 1
Record: 100-62 Won World Series
Manager: Billy Martin
Home Park: Yankee Stadium
Team AVG: .281
Team ERA: 3.61
Home Runs: 184
Stolen Bases: 93
Key Players: Thurman Munson C (.308, 18, 100), Reggie Jackson OF (.286, 36, 110), Ron Guidry SP (16-7, 2.82)

Coming off their win against the Whiz Kids, Billy Martin and the Yanks have to like their draw in this round. The team wasnt just about home runs and long hair, the team had strong pitching where it counted as well as speed on the bases. This Yanks team of course has the confidence that they can beat anyone but it is yet to be seen how they will do under adversity or playing from behind. Reggie has yet to show is clutch abilities but without a doubt will get his chance.

2010 Texas Rangers
Round 1: Defeated 1957 Milwaukee Braves 3 games to 1
Record: 90-72 Lost to Giants in World Series
Manager: Ron Washington
Home Park: Rangers Ballpark at Arlington
Team AVG: .276
Team ERA: 3.93
Home Runs: 162
Stolen Bases: 123
Key Players: Josh Hamilton OF (.359, 32, 100), Neftali Feliz CL (4-3, 2.73, 40 SV), Vladimir Guerrero DH (.300, 29, 115)

The Rangers upset the Braves and now look to pull another rabbit out of their hat against the mighty Yankees. Pitching will be the issue as the starters lead by Cliff Lee will have to be ontop of their game against the Bronx lineup. If The Rangers can get a split in New York, they are very good at home and can make this series quite a fight. The Rangers do believe they have what it takes to get the job done.

Matchup Breakdown

Offense: Both teams are similar in averages and home runs as the Rangers bats are nothing to laugh about and can hit with just about anyone. Josh Hamilton cant really be pitched around with the support he has around him but the Yankees on their side have scrappy hitters who put the ball in play and take the exta base. The Yankees most likely have the deeper lineup but the Rangers may have more overall firepower, and that is saying something.
ADVANTAGE: 2010 Rangers

Pitching: This is where the Yankees should have the edge and the ability to win this series. Ron Guidry and Catfish Hunter are just some of the names that can dominate on the mound while Sparky Lyle gets the job done in the pen. Cliff Lee and CJ Wilson need to show their stuff and potential in the big games while the relatively young age of all the Ranger arms could be a concern in the big spots. Pressure will be on both staffs to get tough outs, and you have to like the track record of Billy Martin;s men.
ADVANTAGE: 1977 Yankees

Overall: The teams are actually quite similar and the chances of some games with huge run totals could be likely. The side that gets anykind of solid pitching should get through. The pressure is off the Rangers who proved very very good agaisnt Hank Aaron and the Braves. Still the Yankees of this era love the drama of a big series and most see them stepping up on the big stage and taking this matchup. Most fans think it will be fun to watch things play out.

PREDICTION: 1977 Yankees win in six

Probable Pitching matchups
Game 1 at Yankee Stadium: Cliff Lee (4-6, 3.98) vs Ed Figueroa (16-11, 3.57)
Game 2 at Yankee Stadium: CJ Wilson (15-8, 3.35) vs Ron Guidry (16-7, 2.92)
Game 3 at Ranger Ballpark in Arlington: Mike Torrez (14-12, 3.82) vs Colby Lewis (12-13, 3.72)

Rangers Hang On For Opening Win
Quick Start By Rangers Holds Off Yank Comeback In Game 1

Yankee Stadium - Ed Figueroa got the starting nod over Ron Guidry and hoped to get his team off on the right foot. It was the vaunted Texas offense however that would have the first word in this series. Josh Hamilton and Julio Borbon both singled with men on in the very first inning as the Rangers tallied three hits and two runs in the first.

In the second inning Figueroa showed again that he had very little and the Rangers kept coming, this time scoring three runs and opening their early lead to five runs. Nelson Cruz had the biggest hit with a bases loaded single that scored two, this followed a Michael Young RBI hit. A throwing error by Thurman Munson in the third scored another run and after his three innings of work Figueroa was gone and the Yankees down six.

Billy Martin and his team knew however that there was a long way to go, even if they were facing Cliff Lee who you would think would be relaxed with such a big lead. In the bottom of the third however the Yanks would land on their feet.

Elvis Andrus dropped a pop up and then the big hitters for the home team came through. Reggie Jackson drove in a run with a single and then Dave Kingman lashed a double off the wall to score two runs. Graig Nettles struck out to end the inning but the lead was cut in half.

Ken Clay and the Yankee bullpen settled the game down and did a fine job holding the Rangers right where they were for the rest of the game. After the rough third inning Cliff Lee settled down and the game moved right along through the 8th where he had enough and was relieved.

There was some late drama late after Neftali Feliz came on to close things out. With two out Cliff Johnson drew a walk and Roy White came up to the plate. White hammered a fastball that carried out to left center and the late lead was cut to one run. Feliz was then taken out of the game and Frank Francisco came on to face Willie Randolph.

Randolph lined one to centerfield but Julio Borbon had him played well and made the catch to end the game. The Rangers get the win and the momentum of winning of the road early. For the Yankees they just managed six hits on the night and fell off balance in the opening innings.

Ok I am noticing a trend as I play these latest games with OOTP11. It seems that the game is favoring the 2010 teams for some odd reason. I have used the 2010 Rangers and Giants in this tournament against some of the best teams in history and I have seen them go about 9-1 against them.

For this reason I am going to use another format to sim the games for the 2010 Rangers, I will be using Whatifsports.com just for this series and not OOTP. Because of this I will not be able to post the boxscores.

After this series of course I will go back to normal.

REGGIE!!! MR. OCTOBER REIGNS
Game For the Ages As Jackson Caps 10th Inning Rally With Walk Off Slam

Yankee Stadium - It was a moment that probably wont be eclipsed as far as dramatics and legends go. Reggie Jackson cemented a legend that has grown through showing his big bat at the right time, and none could ever be bigger then his moment in this one in the bottom of the 10th inning. Down four runs with three outs to go, the comeback was one for the ages.

The game was one for the ages even before the incredible 10th inning. Ron Guidry took the mound agaisnt young CJ Wilson and both men had stuff that couldnt be touched and a determination not to fold to their opponent. The game stayed tied throughout moving along at a fast pace and nerves grew in the Bronx as the Yanks knew this was a game they just couldnt lose.

Reggie came up in the third with a man on second but flied out for the missed chance. In the 5th the Rangers had the first run of the game 90 feet away but Mitch Moreland grounded the chance away. The biggest chance for the Yanks came in the 7th. A two out rally perpetiated by a Michael Young error and then a hits batsman loaded the bases for Willie Randolph. Wilson however made the big pitch when he needed to and the second baseman got under a pitched and popped out to short.

Ron Guidry had to be impressed with the resolve of his young opponent who left the game after 9 innings. Guidry however pitched into extra innings but finally relented his edge in the 10th. David Murphy led off the inning with a home run that just cleared the wall for the first run of the game. Guidry then got two outs but Elvis Andrus beat out an infield hit and up came Michael Young who wanted to make up for his earlier error.
Young caught a pitch and sent it well out of the park and just like that the Rangers were up three and smelling like a rose as Guidry left the game.

The Rangers wernt done as they added another agaisnt reliever Dick Tidrow on a Vladimir Guerrero double and going into the bottom of the 10th, no one but no one really though the Yankees had a chance.

Darren Oliver brought hope back just as soon as it was lost. The reliever had nothing to open the 10th and walked the first two men he faced. There is nothing like giving a team something for nothing when they are is such a hole. Quickly Neftali Feliz came on to try and settle the ship, but in truth he had just boarded the Titanic.

The biggest play of the game may have come next. Speedy Mickey Rivers hit a ground ball to second where Ian Kinsler gloved it nicely, knowing that Rivers has speed, Kinsler rushed his throw for the force at second and threw the ball away allowiing everoeryone to be safe and a run to score. The error was crucial at the time as it appeared to be a sure double play.

Now the Bronx were back alive and rocking. Roy White then did his job by walking and loading the bases with no one out. Reggie Jackson came up representing the tying run and no one out. The chants came R-E-G-G-I-E loader then ever.

It was a storybook moment indeed and it appreared the baseball Gods had only one ending in mind. As the ball sailed into the Bronx night deep to right field the sound became deafening. Fans rushed the field even before the ball had landed it seemed, but there was no doubt, a walk off grand slam for Reggie Jackson.

"Its like your watching it unfold" said Ian Kinsler who made the crucial error in the 10th, "and its like its out of your control, you cant stop it from happening."

Jackson and the Yankees celebrated like they had won the series. Jackson was modest as usual afterword. "I am the best clutch hitter ever to play the game" he beamed, "put all the others behind me. No one has done what I have done."

His point is well taken as words fail you after win like this.

Muscle Vs Muscle In Arlington
Three Run 14th inning Ends Slugfest Marathon In Yanks Win

Ballpark At Arlington - Games in Texas usually dont involve pitching duels and small ball. Even more so was this the case as the Yankees and Rangers renewed their battle after the dramatics of game three were still on everyone's mind. This time the game would stretch out well beyond the expected nine innings as it took a full 14 to determine a winner and series leader.

The game was tied after nine and the extra innings were tense as the home team just needed a run to end it. The Yankee bullpen was on the spot however and the came carried all the way to the 14th. A Dustin Nippert wild pitch finally broke the tie and Bucky Dent later in the inning would sngle with two men in scoring position to give the Yanks a nice three run lead. Ken Holtzman came on in the last of the 14th to close the game out as both teams combined to use 14 pitchers.

Way back at the beginning of the game Colby Lewis and Mike Torrez took the mound as the game three starters. The Rangers scored three in the very first inning when Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz both had run scoring doubles.

The lead would change in a big way in the third inning when Reggie Jackson did it again. Jackson came up with the sacks full and no one out and again slammed a grand slam over the right field fence. Jackson has two grand slams in as many games and has become a nightmare for the Rangers and Ron Washington.

In the 6th inning Chris Chambliss got a hold of one to lead off the inning to the opposite field and New York made their lead two. The game appeared the be wrapped up and beyond reach when an inning later Graig Nettles hit the third Yankee homer with a man on to extend the lead to four runs. Darren ODay had come on to hold the lead but made a mistake to the power third baseman.

The Rangers had blown a four run lead late in game two and now it was the home team's turn to turn the favor. They tacked on a run in the seventh but the big inning was in the 8th where they would tie the game. With two on and two out David Murphy hit a single to score Nelson Cruz and on came Yankee closer Sparky Lyle.

Bengie Molina then suprized everyone by hitting a perfect shot where the defense was not, with the play at the plate late Molina made it all the way to third base with a triple and a tie game in front of the full house crowd at Ranger Ball Park. Lyle would get out of the inning but the job was and win was blown for the moment.

In the bottom of the 9th their big moment seemed to come for Texas. Vlad Guerrero singled with Josh Hamilton on and two out and the Rangers had men on the corners with the winning run 90 feet away. Again Sparky Lyle dug in with Nelson Cruz at the plate. Cruz smashed one to first base but Chris Chambliss made a great play to end the inning and the threat.

The game remained tense and wore on but Billy Martin stuck with Lyle for over three innings and made the moves he had to to get the win. Martin was the better skipper in this one in the end, and in the 14th it all came to fruition.

So the Yanks win a wild one for game three and with the hot bat of Reggie Jackson to count on, they may be well on their way. The Rangers face a crucial game four as they try to tie the series and reset things.

A 64 team draw will now be made to set the matchups for the second round of games which again will feature a best of five series format. I will post the matchups soon. A couple of quick notes:
  • Only one Red Sox team (2004)
  • Only one Baltimore team (1969)
  • 12 Yankee Teams
  • 6 Cardinal teams
Interesting...most of the great teams won the dangerous 3-game set.

As a side note:
I once ranked the best teams ever statisticly, using regular season data and heavily weighted postseason data - I believe the 36,37,38,39 Yankee teams were all up there (you've got the 36 team here, which I recall was the strongest of them all). 98 Yanks were strongest in last 75 years.

Yankee Bats Just Too Hot
Roy White Drives In Five As Yanks Win 11-6 In Texas

Ballpark In Arlington - There is little mercy in the game of baseball, especially when an offense is seeing the ball well and confidence in one pitching staff is low. The 1977 Yankees continued their offensive onslaught in this series and scored 11 times to top the 2010 Rangers once again to take a commanding 3-1 series lead. The Yankees have been flying high since their dramatic game two win.

For the third consecutive game the Yanks scored over 10 runs and tortured Ranger pitching, they seem to like the hitting zone at Arlington as much as anyone. Tommy Hunter got the call on the mound for the Rangers over Rich Harden and he got off on the wrong foot early.

Roy White was poised to have a big night as he opened the scoring with an RBI hit and then was driven in by Reggie Jackson shortly after. Jackson has now driven in over 10 runs in the series and quickly the Yankees were up 2-0.

Mike Torrez, the Yankee starer, ran into his own trouble in the second. A Nelson Cruz triple capped the four hit, three run inning and the Rangers wrere right back on top; Unfortunately the lead wouldnt last on this day. In the third Lou Pienella tied the game with a long ball and in the fifth a long home run with a man on by Chris Chambliss put New York up by two and they would not trail again.

Hunter kept the ball up and missed his spots and Roy White hit the third homerun of the day for the visitors and before the fourth inning was over it was a clear 7-3 lead. Tommy Hunter was pulled but the damage had been done.

The big day continued for White who drove in two more with a bases loaded single in the 6th. White was in a groove in this one driving in five runs and scoring three. The game would play itself out in the later innings with the only significant hit by David Murphy who hit a two run bomb in the eigth but Dick Tidrow again did a fine job out of the pen and there would be no comeback today.

"We are one game away and just cant lose our focus or give this team any hope" said manager Billy Martin as his team needs one win to close out this series. The aces go back to work in game five and Cliff Lee will try to send the series back to the Bronx.

The dramatic walk off grand slam by Reggie Jackson in game two still appears to be the back breaker of this series.

Behind Big Ed Yankees Close Out Texas Hopes
Figueroa takes No Hitter To 7th In 3-1 Win

Ball Park At Arlington - Like a Lion waiting to finish off their prey, the 1977 New York Yankees smelled blood and went in for the series kill this afternoon in Texas. The hero of the day was the Yankee right hander Ed Figueroa who handcuffed a strong Texas lineup on route to the clinching 3-1 victory that moves the Yankees on to the next round.

The previous games have all been slugfests but on this warm day at Arlington both Cliff Lee and Figueroa showed much better action and stuff on the pitches. The game's biggest blow however would come early and it came against the Rangers who more then anything did not want to fall behind and add to the already enormous pressure they had on them to try and win and keep the series alive.

Graig Nettles has had an on and off series thus far and hasnt been part of most of the fireworks. Nettles has even heard it from some of the media as he and Thurman Munson have been eclipsed by the heroics of Reggie Jackson and Roy White. Nettles in the second inning however proved his worth, with a man on the fast ball hitting third baseman got exactly what he wanted from Cliff Lee and hit it out over 400 feet to left. Leave it to the New York media to get someone going.

With the early lead the energy seemed to go out of the Ballpark in texas, and the Yankee on the mound just grew in confidece and effectiveness. The innings went by quickly for the Rangers at the plate with a lack of scoring chances and baserunners. Lee in fact was giving them nothing and in the 5th inning after Reggie Jackson hit a solo home run to make the lead three, Figueroa had his no hitter going. Jackson for his part hit his third home run of the series and was the danger man throughut the series. Jackson drove in a dozen runs in five games.

The no hitter moved into the seventh inning but oddly enough without a hit in that inning the Rangers had their best chance of the day. Figueroa walked two men but the Yankee starter got out of it as he and Thurman Munson worked quickly to get the big out on Michael Young with two outs.

In the 8th inning Josh Hamilton led off the inning with a bloop single to end the historic run. Once again however the Rangers could not come through with a man in scoring position and the feeling of the door closing on their series was thick in the air. In the 9th with two out Nelson Cruz clubbed a double to left field and Ian Kinsler followed with a sharp single and with two out in the ninth the Rangers had their first run and the tying run coming to the plate.

Manager Billy Martin went to the mound and decided to give the call to the pen and closer Sparky Lyle. David Murphy wasd the final hope for Texas and trying to protect with two strikes, Murphy chased one that he popped up and Chrs Chambliss squeezed it to end the ball game and the series.

The Yankees swept all three games in Texas and won the games in their own flamboyant way. Still no one will forget the dramatics of game two when they wrote history and to their credit never had a letdown. Now they are the second Yankee team through to the final 32 teams and George Steinbrenner could be seen with a smile on his face after the final out.

There are even rumors that Billy Martin and Reggie Jackson embraced.

1986 Houston Astros vs 1975 Cincinnati Reds

Red Machine Look To Derail Ryan Express

1975 Cincinnati Reds
Round 1: Defeated 1975 Boston Red Sox three games to one
Record: 108-54
Finish: Won World Series
Manager: Sparky Anderson
Ball park: Riverfront Stadium
Runs scored: 840
Runs allowed: 586
Team AVG: .271
Team ERA: 3.37
Home Runs: 124
Stolen bases: 168
Key players: Joe Morgan 2B (.327, 94 RBI, 67 SB), Johnny Bench C (.283, 28, 110), Tony Perez 1B (.282, 20, 109)

Many still feel that this is the best lineup and most balanced to ever take the field and as one looks at the speed and power totals together its hard to argue against it. The Reds disposed of the Red Sox with ease and will be very hard to stop, their pitching is the one area that people tend to pick on but their ability to pitch well in big games cant be overlooked. The Big Red Machine is one of the favorites to take this entire tournament.

1986 Houston Astros
Round 1: Defeated 1956 Yankees three games to one
Record: 96-66
Finish: Lost in NLDS
Manager: Hal Lanier
Ball park: Houston Astrodome
Runs scored: 654
Runs allowed: 559
Team AVG: .255
Team ERA: 3.15
Home Runs: 125
Stolen bases: 163
Key players: Mike Scott SP (18-10, 2.22 ERA, 306 K), Kevin Bass RF (.311, 20 HR, 22 SB), Glen Davis 1B (.265, 31, 101)

If anyone could put out the fire on the big red machine it is this pitching staff. The Astros led by Mike Scott handcuffed the 56 Yankees to get here and overpower hitters with a ton of strikeouts. The Astros also could run and their ability to play on the turf and win is perfect for their home park. This team is very impressive on paper and many think have the ability to put a scare into anyone.

Series Analysis

Hitting- There is little doubt from the amount of runs that they put up and the numerous hall of famers in their lineup that no team can really match the Reds here. Still the Astros create runs well and the question remains how close can they stay with the Reds output. The Astros due lack the overall pop in their order so of course the overall grade here goes to the Reds.
ADVANTAGE: 75 Reds

Pitching - This is where the Astros turn the tables with three close to dominant starters going for them and Mike Scott coming off a 300 strikeout season and untouchable stuff. The Reds are just adequete here but out of the two sides do have the better defense that will help. Hands down the Astros win here.
ADVANTAGE: 86 Astros

Overall: A great series could be presenting itself here as the Astros disposed of the championship Yankees very well in round one. The prospect of facing Mike Scott three times in a series could cause the Stros to be more serious contenders here and the contribution of Nolan Ryan could be key. Still the Reds should have enough, with the smart baseball they play and their strong defense as well as the better manager, they should move on to continue their quest. In any event this series should be alot of fun.
PREDICTION: 75 Reds in six

Probable Pitching Matchups

Game 1 at Riverfront Stadium: Mike Scott (18-10, 2.22 ERA) vs Gary Nolan (15-9, 3.16 ERA)
Game 2 at Riverfront Stadium: Nolan Ryan (12-8, 3.34) ERA vs Jack Billingham (15-10, 4.11)
Game 3 at the Astrodome: Don Gullett (15-4, 2.42) vs Bob Knepper (17-12, 3.14)

Reds Make Statement In Opening Win
Rose Drives In Three As Cincy Cruises 8-1

Riverfront Stadium - The 1975 Reds may have been tired of hearing how underated their opponents were going into this series and how difficult Mike Scott would be to beat. The Reds no doubt knew that the 86 Astros were coming off a big series upset against the 56 Yankees, and made it a point not to fall victim and get off to the best start in this series at home. A complete win by the Red Machine in the end gave them the start and assurance they needed.

In the middle of all the action was the emotional leader, one among many for the Reds, Pete Rose who was the fuel in this win. Rose and Ken Griffey combined to go 5-8 on the night against Scott, taking pitches and prolonging atbats. Matching the intesity and intangibles of the Reds will be something the Astros will be trying to match throughout the series.

Gary Nolan is paid to get men out and although he started a little rocky, Nolan allowed only a run in the first inning and then shut the door. Even more impressive was when Nolan came up in the top of the third and lead off the innings with a towering home run just over the left field wall. The blow would end up giving the Reds the lead in this one for good.

In the 5th Rose had one of those atbats where he fouled off numerous good pitches before forcing one he could handle. With two men on, Rose doubled to right scoring two and opening the game up to a three run lead. In the 8th inning the Reds would slam to the door on Houston scoring four more and opening things up after Scott left the game. Three doubles in the inning had Riverfront ringing and the Reds played like they were the better and more confident team.

Rawly Eastwick came on to get some work in the 9th but Gary Nolan settled down quite well and the deserved winner. When the Reds offense gets going they are a force like no other, the Red machine is so good especially when runners are on.

Fists pumping and uniforms ragged, the Reds take the first step.

Nolan Ryan Has The Answers In Game Two
10 Strikeout Performance From Ryan Sends Astros To Easy Win

Riverfront Stadium - Even at the age of 39, Nolan Ryan and his smoking fastball still had hitters reaching for the unhittable. The Ryan Express was the key man on this night at Riverfront as his performance behind an early lead, allowed the 86 Astros to tie this series heading south to the Astrodome.

The last thing you want to do if you are the Reds in this game is to fall behind Nolan Ryan. Jack Billingham didnt take the mound completely sharp however and the Astros scored more runs in that first then they had all of game one against Gary Nolan. Billy Hatcher led off the game by getting plunked on the arm. Billingham didnt have great command and Kevon Bass took advantage as he ripped a line drive two run home run to right center for the lead. Glenn Davis the doubled and Alan Ashby droe him in with a two out single.

Nolan Ryan usually pitches the hard way, getting outs with runners on base as he did with two men on in the 2nd inning when he struck out Tony Perez. The Reds hitters are big swingers but even Pete Rose wasnt immune to the Ryan heat as he struck out in the 5th. Jack Billingham did settle down and held the lead down going into the 6th inning but the Astros were in the moode for more.

Ashby loaded the bases in the 6th and Billy Hatcher hit a deep sacrafice fly for a run. The Astros would wrap up the game and knock out Billingham in the 7th with two more runs behind again Kevin Bass and Glenn Davis. The Reds would get on the board in that same inning when a Joe Morgan triple turned into a run.

Nolan Ryan had a 7-1 lead going into the 9th but Hal Lanier went to his closer Dave Smith. Ryan had thrown 111 pitches and definately could have kept going, but with the game well out of reach surely the Astros plan to rest and use Ryan again in the series. George Foster did hit a long home run in the 9th to make the final a five run differance.

So the Astros bounce back quite well in game two and feel good about playing in the various tricks of the Astrodome for the next three games. Game three will obviously be key for the series with now the majority of the games set for Houston.

Those expecting a long competitive series may be right on.

Reds Hold Off Home Stros for Series Lead
Eastwick Closes Door In 9th For 5-4 Game 3 Win

Astrodome - The Reds were obviously bothered by their poor effort in game two of this series against Nolan Ryan. Players were saying that the team wasnt intense enough and didnt fight the way they expect to. Their mindset for their first game at the Astrodome where over 50,000 fans supporting their team, was much diffrent.

The Reds of this era were a great team away from home becuase they believed in themselves. Don Gullett had the task of rigthing the ship against Bob Knepper and the Astros, and from the opening innings it was clear that Gullett had the upper hand and a great feel with his battery mate Johnny Bench. Gullett would strike out seven men on the night despite allowing nine hits; he made the big pitches under pressure when he needed to and then depended on his bullpen.

The Reds loaded the bases in the very first inning and only walked away with one run after George Foster drew a walk with the sacks full. Tony Perez then ended the inning hitting into a double play. In the second inning Ken Griffey doubled on a line to right to score Don Gullett the pitcher all the way from first base. Bill Doran cut the lead to 2-1 with an RBI single in the third but the Reds wernt done inflicting their damage on this night.

In the 6th Dave Conception drove in the third Reds run and then with the bases loaded and twon down Don Gullett stepped to the plate. The pitcher was late on a 2-2 pitch but drove it down the righr field line and the hit scored two to extend the visitors lead to 5-1. Bob Knepper jsut couldnt make the big pitches when he needed to and in the end the Reds would need every single one of the runs they scored against him.

Still the Astros and their fans were not ready to call it a night yet. Kevin Bass singled to score two in the seventh and basically knock Gullett from the game. It would be up to the Reds bullpen to close the door and preserve the slim 5-3 lead.

After a leadoff walk Sparky Anderson and the Reds used three diffrent pitchers to preserve their lead. Pedro Borbon collected the final out of the inning when he induced a fly out by Dickie Thon who represented the tying run.

In the 9th Rawley Eastwick was the man to close the door. With one man down however Billy Hatcher doubled and would make this inning a tough one. Bll Doran then drove in another run with a single to cut the Reds lead down to one run. The Astros had their two star hitters at the plate with the tying run on base. Kevin Bass hit a fielders choice to second base where Joe Morgan made a fine play. Glenn Davis then had the fans on their feet and hoped that Eastwick would make a mistake. Davis grounded the ball to Pete Rose however who took the throw to first to end the game.

The Red Machine is back in control and now face Mike Scott in game four, they battered the Astros ace quite well in game one and it will be interesting to see if the ace has his confidence in place. It is close to a must win for the Astros, who look to go blow for blow with the favorite Reds.

Red Machine Outlast Fighting Astros
12 inning 7-5 win for Reds after late inning comeback by Houston

Astrodome - Sometimes even a team that wants it more then another jsut cant complete the job becuase their opponents are simply better. As the 1975 Reds won their second game in a row at the Astrodome to take a 3 game to one lead in the series, it may jus be that the Red Machine is just too much.

Again Astros ace Mike Scott was less then dominant against the Reds, but this time it wasnt his fault as the Reds got off to a three run start in the very first inning, and did it all without a single hit. A walk and two errors scored one and then two hard ground outs scored two more. The big error came from center fieder Billy Hatcher who misplayed a fly.

Houston would get right back in the 6th inning with one swing of the bat from Bill Doran. Doran cracked a three run home run off of Gary Nolan to tie the game, the Astros fought their way back and had the momentum on their side.

The game carried to the late innings where Dave Conception lifted a sacrafice fly in the 8th inning. Cesar Geronimo got a crucial hit in the 9th inning for an insurance run and Rawley Eastwick again came on to close up the 9th. The Asrtos wouldnt quit for a moment however, Glenn Davis lead off with a walk. Denny Walling then triple to right field and with no one out the tying was on third and the winning run at the plate. With one out CVraig Reynolds grounded to short and Walling came home on contact to tie the score. Houston seemed committed to not losing this game.

The bullpens did their jobs but having never trailed in this game there was a feeling that the Reds always had the upper hand. The game well over three hours moved into the 12th. With two down the rally came, Dave Conception singled and up came Ken Griffey who has been having a great series. Griffey laced one to the gap in right field and hustled all the way to third base to give Cincinnati the lead.

Frank Dipino came on for the Astros but lacked poise on the mound and immediatelly threw a wild pitch to let Griffey come home and farther the damage. The silent Astrodome knew that this Reds team just couldnt be held down.

The Astros didnt have another run in them and went down in order to reliever Clay Carrol who did an excellent job in relief for his team. The Reds with their 3-1 series lead look like a team hungry to close things out.

"This team has a drive to win at all costs" said Johnny Bench, "and that is what makes us great in close ballgames."

As for the Astros they now take a diffrent approach. "Everyone expects us to lose," says Bill Doran, "we can go out with nothing to lose and just play the game"

After The Dust Settles The Astros Are Still Alive
15 Inning Classic and Astros Win To Extend Series

Astrodome - Nearly five hours of drama at the Astrodome as the Reds fought to close out the series but the Astros had none of it. Fifteen innings of good baseball and fine pitching came to a head in the end when Billy Hatcher singled to right for the walk off score.

The feeling at the start of the game was one of loyalty as the Astros fans were still believing that their team could turn things around. In the very first inning however the Reds made their usual hot start and got on the board when Pete Rose doubled in a run. Houston did come back and take the lead in the 3rd thanks in part to a triple by Dickie Thon.

Both starters did their all tonight. Jim Deshaies of the Astros felt the pressure of the moment but dealt with it well. On the other end Fred Norman was constantly pushed on by Johnny Bench and his mates.

In the 5th it was Pete Rose again who hustled out a triple and right after Joe Morgan drove him in with a double to tie the game. Deshaies limited the damage however by getting George Fostert and Bench. The Astros however broke the tie again in the 7th when Billy Hatcher hit a sacrafice fly to center.

Up a run, Houston went to Manny Hernandez in the 8th to hold the lead. With two outs however Dave Conception doubled and Dan Driessen walked. On came Jeff Calhoun in relief to face Ken Griffey from the left side. After fouling off four pitches Griff popped one to center field but no one commited to the ball and it dropped for a double that tied the game. Ty Gainey and Billy Hatcher didnt communicate well on this crucial play.

Into extra innings the game would go and the team's bullpen's took the reins and did a great job. In the 11th Joe Morgan struck out with the go ahead run on second. In the same inning Alan Ashby was stranded on second as the winning run. In the 13th Dickie Thon came up with two outs and runners on second and third, Sparky Anderson decided not to walk the bases loaded and Will McEnaney was asked to finish off the inning. Thon swung at the first pitch and hit it to right where Ken Griffey made a great running catch to end the inning.

In the 14th again the Astros had the winning run at third, but again came up short after Bill Plummer as a pinch hitter flied out to left. It seemed as if the Astros were losing their will to win with all the near misses. Next the Reds would have their chance.

In the 15th Tony Perez doubled and Dave Conception moved him to third. With two down pinch hitter Bill Plummer had the chance to win the series but Frank DiPino got him to fly out to left to end the threat. The Astros grea in confidence as they dodged that bullet. Now the time came for an end. After two down Dickie Thon doubled and with Thon on second, John Mizerock singled hard to center was held up after Gainey made a perfect throw to the plate; should they have sent Thon anyway?

Up came Billy Hatcher who had heard the calls about his error in game four that was so crucial to the loss. Hatcher was 1 for 6 in this game and did little to ease his pressure, but now came his chance and his moment. Hatcher drove the ball through the hole in right, pulling a fastball, and the Astrodome celebrated their win.

Now things get quite interesting as the Astros head back to Cincinnati but have both Nolan Ryan and Mike Scott ready for games 6 and 7. Their two best arms have a chance to pull the impossible off. The Reds have to be exhausted, but now the rubber hits the road and they have all intention to closing things out at Riverfront.

A great finale awaits.

Houston Dreams Come To An End Late
Six Runs In Late Innings Lead Reds Behind Foster Homer

Riverfront Stadium - In the end it all turned out the way it was suppose to in this series. Still when looked closely the games and drama of this series were as good as it gets, including two extra innings battles. Back home the Cincinnati Machine woke up late in Game 6 and ended this series moving them on to the next step of their quest to be the best.

"Its just another step", says Pete Rose "We wont celebrate too much until we are crowned the best team ever"

Houston saddled their big arm and maybe most trusted man as Nolan Ryan took the mound. Ryan had pitched so well in game two and now had the job of extending the series. Ryan didnt lose his course as he came out in game six in front of a full house and started the game everyone expected him too.

The Astros actually jumped out first on Reds starter Jack Billingham. With an early Reds run by George Foster the Astros scored three in the second and third innings. Craig Reynolds singled in a run in the second and Denny Walling singled in a run in what was part of a two run third inning. Ryan now had a two run lead moving forward and did have the look of a killer in his eye.

Ryan held the lead and struck out six men before the game moved into the seventh inning where the fatefull moment of the series would come. Ryan got the first two men of the series and looked comfortable close the seventh. Ken Griffey however doubled and then Hal Lanier became the center of attention when he took the ball from Ryan and went to his pen. Ryan was visibly upset and as the results would unfold, the decision was a real diffrence maker.

On came Manny Hernandez to face Pete Rose. Rose doubled to left field scoring Griffey and cutting the Astros lead to one run. Joe Moran then came up and was patient after a full count to finally draw a walk. So tensions rose at Riverfront as George Foster came to bat with the tying run on second base. Foster swung hard at the first pitch he saw and drove the ball to deep right center field. The ball just cleared the wall over Billy Hatcher's head and the damaged had been done. Nolan Ryan hung his head in the dugout and wondered why he wasnt allowed to close things out.

The party started in Cincinnati and the Reds would add two more runs in the 8th inning to avoid any drama. Pat Darcy closed out the ninth inning and the Reds were moving on after six games.

Hal Lanier said after the game that he simply though the Hernandez was a better matchup against Pete Rose, but no one seemed to agree that the move was the best one.

A good series is over and the upset avoided.

Not surprised that the Big Red Machine won the series, but very surprised that M.Scott lost twice considering how dominant he was in '86.
I am enjoying following this dynasty-thanks

1993 Philadelphia Phillies vs 1923 NY Yankees

1923 NY Yankees
Round 1: Defeated 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates 3 games to 2
Record: 98-54
Finish: Won World Series
Manager: Miller Huggins
Ball park: Yankee Stadium
Runs scored: 823
Runs allowed: 622
Team AVG: .291
Team ERA: 3.62
Home Runs: 105
Stolen bases: 69
Key players: Babe Ruth RF (.393, 41, 131), Wally Pipp 1B (.304, 6 HR, 108 RBI), Bullett Joe Bush SP (19-15, 3.43, 125 K)

The first true Yankee powerhouse is lead by the influencial Miller Huggins and a slugger named Babe Ruth who almost hit .400. The Yanks still were learning how to win but had a collective team average near .300 and were enjoying huge support in their new Stadium. Still make no mistake that as Ruth goes so goes this team. The Yanks beat down Honus Wagner and the Pirates in round one and are looking to become the third Yankee team to make it into the final 32. You may not recognize all the names on this team, including the pitchers, but they are a side that rarely puts out a poor effort.

1993 Philadelphia Phillies
Round 1: Defeated 1925 Pirates Three games to two
Record: 97-65
Finish: Won NL Pennant; Lost in World Series to Toronto
Manager: Jim Fergosi
Ball park: Veterans Stadium
Runs scored: 877
Runs allowed: 740
Team AVG: .274
Team ERA: 3.95
Home Runs: 156
Stolen bases: 91
Key players: Lenny Dykstra CF (.305, 19 HR, 37 SB), Darren Daulton C (.257, 24 HR, 105 RBI), John Kruk 1b (.316, 14 HR, 85 RBI)

As tough as they come Jim Fergosi's men look to pull the first big upset of the second round. The Phllie pitching staff will be in the spotlight as they need Curt Schilling and Danny Jackson to be at their best. Other then Lenny Dykstra, this is not a fast team but looks for the long ball to do their damage. Mitch Williams will most likely be teste with leads late and needs to keep his poise and not live up to his wild reputation. One thing is for sure that this team fears no one and has a cockiness that actually will likely help them.

Series Analysis

Hitting - Look for the long ball to be back in this series as both teams foresake small ball for the big blow. The Phillies are likely the more deeper and spread out team when it comes to offense but the Yankees have a better team average and of course the wild card in Babe Ruth who would give just about any team the edge. Many runs are expected to be scored in this series and hitting for both sides is indeed a strength.
ADAVANTAGE: 23 Yankees

Pitching - Five men over 200 innings and some famous names of the era like Herb Pennock and Sad Sam Jones have the Yankees strong in this area. The Phillies depend on the young arms of Curt Schilling and Tommy Greene while Danny Jackson needs to keep his breaking pitches down. The Yanks of course dont use a bullpen while the Phils have had some issues with their late inning team. Really no clearcut advanatge in this area although the Yanks are deeper with their starting staff.
ADVANTAGE: 23 Yankees

Overall - Many are talking about a possible showdown off the field where the Babe will take on the Kruker in a hot dog eating contest but the focus should stay on the field. Looking at confidence alone the winner here would be the Phillies who expect to win everytime out and bow to no one. The Yanks however will be very hard to hold down on the offensive end and Ruth is always lingering to do damage; the ability to pitch around him will have to be dealt with by Jim Fergosi. The diffrence may be the Yankee pitching staff which is better then many may realize and in most poeople's estimation should be able to contain the Fighting Phillies.

PREDICTION: 23 Yankees in seven

Pitching Probables
Game One at Yankee Stadium: Curt Schilling (16-7, 4.02) vs Bullet Joe Bush (19-15, 3.43)
Game Two from Yankee Stadium: Danny Jackson (12-11, 3.77) vs Bob Shawkey (16-11, 3.51)
Game Three from Veterans Stadium: Sad Sam Jones (21-8, 3.63) vs Tomy Greene (16-4, 3.42)

Phils Stun Yanks As Series Opens With Suprize
Sixteen Hit Attack Behind Sharp Schilling Offers Win

Yankee Stadium - With all the brash and confidence of a team that can win against anyone or anywhere the 93 Phillies kickoff this important series with an easier win then anyone expected. The biggest star of this day was Phillie starter Curt Schilling who tamed the Yankees and held back Babe Ruth to earn an 8-1 win.

When Schilling left the game however in the 8th inning for a pinch hitter the game was far from decided. The Phils in fact would score six runs in the last two innings to blow the game open and stomp away with the win. Schilling overall however struck out five and allowed only four hits; the only run was a Babe Ruth RBI single in the 5th.

Yankee starter Herb Pennock wasnt bad at all either through seven. in the 6th the Phillies scored two as they lead off the inning with four straight hits. Jim Eisenrich singled in the first run and Curt Schilling helped his own cause with an infield single that would score the second run. The Phillies as a team would have a total of 16 and every single one of them were singles, believe it or not.

In the 8th Ricky Jordan came in for Schilling with two men on to hit as Jim Fergosi felt this was his chance to open things up. Jordan singled to right scoring one. Kevin Stocker then a shot at short stop Ernie Johnson who watched it slip under his glove and into left center. Two runs would score in the error as a play made there would have ended the inning and kept the Yankees in the ballgame.

In the 9th with a four run lead poor pitching control and another error would take this game out of reach as the Phillies would score three more. Oscar Roettger walked three and allowed a single to allow another run. Then on a flyout by Mariano Duncan Whitey Witt made a bad throw from center field that allowed another man to score. At this point the game was out of reach.

So the Phillies look to keep the momentum going and the Yankees need the supporting players to step up around Ruth. Ruth wont see anything good to hit unless there is reason to.

Yankees Wake Up To Slap Down Phils
Bob Muesel Drives In Three As Yanks Even Series

Yankee Stadium - Somtimes it takes a while for a team to wake up in a series but when it happens everyone knows it. After struggling all through game one and half of game two, the 1923 Yankees opened things up and bea Danny Jackson and the 1993 Phillies 8-2 to even this series.

Jackson was hard on the strong Yankee left handers including their star Babe Ruth. The Yankees did have an answer this time however on their side of the mound where Bob Shawkey looked determined to lead his team to a win in a game New York could not afford to lose.

In the fourth inning the Phillies got off to the right foot as Darren Daulton lifted a long one deep to center field that traveled an estimated 502 feet. It was a blow everyone epected from the chubby right fielder on the other team. With the lead, Jackson kept his cool and had his offspeed stuff working over the plate. Shawkey stayed efficient and settled down after the solo blow, credit to him without the offensive support.

In the bottom of the 6th however the Yankees would wake up. Wally Pipp doubled and a single and a walk loaded the bases. Joe Dugan tied the game with a long sac fly to right. Bob Shwkey then did what old time pitchers use to do, he hit well for himself and drove a a double to center field that scored two and opened the game. Mike McNally drove in a fourth run and the Yanks looked much ore comfortable.

Shawkey just kept going and didnt reach the 100 pitch mark in this game all the way until the 8th inning. In the bottom of the 8th Bob Muesel ended any doubt. With the bases loaded, Big Bob, cleared the bases with a double to right center field to put the Yankees up by seven runs. The Yankees and their fans knew that their long hitting drought was now officiallly over.

Carl Mays let up a run in the 9th but the Yankees took the game and evened things up heading back to Veterens Stadium. This Yankee tea being so early in their history lack the swagger of a typical Yankee team, but still posses the bat of Babe Ruth who has not been a factor yet.

Veterens Stadium will be filled to the brim and the crucial next three are at the Phillies home.

Phillies Love a Slugfest
10-6 Philly Win Behind Big Day For Kruk

Veterans Stadium - A clear night in Philadelphia and the stage was set for this series to be lifted to another level as both teams went for the edge. The 1993 Phillies love games that involve a bunch of runs and were the more comfortable team on the turf in this one. The Phillies scored all 10 of their runs in this one in the first 4 innings and held on for a satisfying 10-6 win over the worried 1923 Yankees.

The strategy was obvious for Jim Fergosi and his starter Danny Jackson. The home team made it a priority to make sure that Babe Ruth didnt beat them in anyway. Ruth was given nothing to hit and after all was said and done walked an incredible six times in this one single game.

"We felt like if you take Ruth out of their game they are not the same team" said Fergosi about the walks. Ruth of course had a diffrent view.

"Those bastards are cowards" said the slugging right fielder.

Another chubby man was thre man of the night in this game. John Kruk started his perfect night with an RBI in the very first inning off Yankee starter Sad Sam Jones. The Phillies would add another but Joe Dugan tied the game with a two run home run in the second. Danny Jackson had good but not great stuff on the night but would recieve much more help from his offense.

Kruk singled in another run in the second as the Phillies scored two more to retake the lead. Mickey Morandini drove in the 5th Philly run in the third but the game would really open up in the fourth for the brash home team. Yankee reliever Oscar Roettger has had better days and had no feel on his control tonight. Four straight walks scored a run and then Milt Thompson hit a sacrafice fly. Mariano Duncan drove in a run with a single and a passed ball scored a fourth. George Pipgras came on in relied but the Phils had scored five already.

New York came back as best they could and in the 6th mounted a rally that scored three runs with base on balls again being the culprit. This game as a whole had a total of 21 walks, 14 of them by the Phillies. The lead however was too big for the visitors to overcome and the day belonged to Phlly.

John Kruk went 4-4 and drove in two runs while Mitch Williams pitched to close out the game in the 9th.

Now the Yankees and Miller Huggins must find a way to bounce back in this series again, and chances are they wont be allowed to have Babe Ruth be a part of it.
