You do what you have to to win. Thats why you cant blame Schumacher. He was a real competitor. And blame the French for allowing those two OT goals and then losing the PK's. Maybe it was karma for knocking out the Brazilians. Or was that 86?

Yeah Italy knocked Brazil out in the second group phase, did you know England never lost a game and only let in 1 goal.

Those second round groups were ridiculous. Id like to see the 2nd round group stage return but have the 2nd draw balanced like the initial draw.

There was a piece in a newspaper few months back and a manager (can't for the life of me think of his name) said that the thing that seperates average players from top players isn't skill it's their brain.

I agree and their ability to resist unhealthy impulses that their wealth might give them a chance of partaking in.

Can't remember much about the article but he went on about defenders saying that the difference between a top defender and an average defender was his brain, ie when to kick the ball out of play and when to pass the ball in and around your own box.

There was a programme about Bobby Moore on the other week and one of his friends could have been a pro footballer so Moore asked him why he hadn't done it, his friend replied I couldn't head the ball, couldn't kick a ball and couldn't run fast enough, Moore's reply was "I couldn't do any of those either but I still capatained England to a World Cup win". Moore is probably the prime example that if you have a football brain the skill level doesn't have to be high to be a great player.

There have only been two matches that English-speaking US residents could see so far, and neither has been terribly exciting. There isn't much to say about the Gold Cup from a US perspective, either, since it's pretty much the "B" team in the squad. CONCACAF made some exceptions to the US roster to allow for the Confederations Cup, but most of the top US players are back with their clubs. To a lesser extent, that seems like it holds for the rest of the teams there, too; Honduras didn't have Wilson Palacios or David Suazo with their team, for example.

There are definitely some guys there who are making a push to fill out the potential World Cup roster -- Santino Quaranta and Kyle Beckerman looked good last night -- but I don't think most of these guys have realistic shots at a lot of playing time. It was definitely interesting to see how much better the US team looked after Benny Feilhaber and Charlie Davies entered the match (and Freddy Adu exited), though.

I was thinking with the Confederations Cup showing there'd be more talk of the Gold Cup, how's it being reported in the US ?

It's mostly being ignored (among the English-language media, at least). ESPN carried the entire Confederations Cup, but the only channel carrying the Gold Cup is Fox Soccer Channel, and they're only showing the matches the US play. If we want to see Mexico take on Guadaloupe or Canada play Costa Rica, we're SOL, unless we speak Spanish and get some channels that aren't carried by most cable companies.

I'd have thought it may have given it a bit of a jolt with the Confederations showing, be honest I'd never heard of it until the other day when I was checking the latest scores on flash scores.

We complete our preseason lineup with what should be an easy win over local rivals Wigan. I never knew witches could play footie.

...and WIGAN makes six!

You mean Adebayor, right? I'm pretty sure that a) Agbonlahor's sticking with Aston Villa and 2) doesn't need a work permit to work in his home country.

My bad. I exceeded my limit on Sam Adams last night.

Does Jon Carter visit the OOTP boards ? If he does, we've been there and done it Jon many days ago. Wonder if his next report will be about the Gold Cup
