June '14 Update
GOOD RACES TO START THE 1914 SEASON
Both leagues see some good pennant races shaping up. In the American League, we have a tie atop the standings with the White Sox and Senators sharing identical records of 25-16. Just a game back are the St. Louis Browns and the only team probably out of range are the Detroit Tigers, with a dismal 12-29 record. In the Senior Circuit, the St. Louis Cardinals have awoken from years of mediocrity to put a team that looks like a contender atop the standings with a 25-16 record. Both the Cubs and Giants lurk a mere two games back, however, and no one is more than eight out in what looks like a very tough and balanced National League. WHO'S OFF TO A FAST START? A pair of Washington Senator infielders sit atop the batting leaderboard as third baseman Derrell Griffith leads the AL in hitting with a .396 average and shortstop Jeff Huson's .371 mark is second. New York Yankee outfielder Harry Stovey is having a breakout season, with six home runs already (on pace for a record-shattering 23) and a .360 average. In the National League, the Giants' Ross Barnes is off to a historic start, leading the league in batting average with an astounding .453 mark thus far. George Wright of Boston is second, and at .357, nearly 100 points behind the incredible pace set by Barnes. Ralph Kiner and Hank Severeid each have 3 homers to lead the league. Amongst the pitchers, the Cardinals' Mike Scott has racked up nine wins already with Cubs' ace Warren Spahn second with seven. The same pair sit atop the ERA board with Scott's 2.15 best and Spahn's 2.25 second-best. In the American League, Frank Pastore of the Browns has won 10 games already and leads the league in ERA as well with a 1.86 mark. Boston's Fred Heimach is second in both categories, with seven wins (Washington's Allyn Stout also has 7) and a 2.39 ERA

Brooklyn hasn't had a GM since 1903?

They have a GM, I just don't know what his board alias is. Check the GM standings on the Batty site, his name is there.

End of Regular Season - 1914
CARDINALS SOAR TO PENNANT
The St. Louis Cardinals, long-time doormats of the National League, have won the first pennant in team history, finishing with a 92-62 record to best perennial pennant winner Chicago by a full five games. The most amazing thing about the Cardinals' pennant is that statistically speaking the team is not among the best in the league. Their overall team batting average of .264 is 11th best in BaTTY, while the pitcher's collective 3.64 ERA is 8th. The team is led by two players, both outstanding - and young - in Robin Yount and Barry Bonds. Yount finished the season with a .347 average (3rd best in the NL), 3 homers and 102 RBIs (2nd). Bonds hit .302 with 85 RBIs but produced 16 circuit clouts, to set a new single-season record, eclipsing the 14 home runs achieved by Bill Greenwood in '05 and Frank Schulte in '11. Pitching-wise the team is led by two very solid, but not overpowering hurlers in Frank Fleet (25-11, 3.18) and Mike Scott (19-16, 3.25). DEFENDING CHAMPION SENATORS LOOK FOR REPEAT The Washington Senators, World's Series champions for 1913, have recaptured the AL pennant and will look to repeat as Series titlists against the Cardinals. The Senators finished a mere one game ahead of the Browns - preventing an all-St.Louis World Series. The Senators' success was powered primarily through a lineup that produced the 2nd-best average in BaTTY at .286 and scored 754 runs (3rd-best). The pitching staff was average at best, with a staff ERA of 3.78, so the team was indeed carried by the lineup. That lineup was led by a slew of .300-plus hitters headed up by Jeff Huson, whose .365 mark was 2nd best in the AL as well as Derrell Griffith (.335, 5th), Marc Salas (.325, 8th) and Barry Bonnell (.324, 9th). Griffith drove in 105 runs, 2nd best in the league. On the pitching side, Mark Eichhorn led the league in wins with 27 and was fourth in ERA at 3.20 for the year. George Van Haltren's 3.49 was 10th-best, but he finished with a sub-.500 record of 14-15. STOVEY/BARNES HAVE SEASONS FOR THE AGES The New York Yankees, who struggled mightily for the first decade of the league, have shown signs of emerging as a contender of late and much of the credit for that would have to go to star outfielder Harry Stovey. Stovey led the AL in hitting at .374 and also contributed a league-leading 13 home runs while driving in 86 runs. The NL batting champion also played in New York and also enjoyed a historic season. Giants second baseman Ross Barnes hit .421, a full 50 percentage points ahead of his nearest NL competitor (Johnny Mize of the Reds, .371) and the 2nd-best mark in league history behind the .424 posted by the immortal Cap Anson in 1902. His OPS for 1914 was 1.083 which is a new league record as well. Since Barnes is merely 25 years of age, he has plenty of time to improve, which is a scary thought for NL pitchers. Cubs pitcher Warren Spahn was again the class of the National League, with 27 wins and a 2.17 ERA to lead the league in both categories and with 325 strikeouts to finish second to Pirate Jim Scott's 342. The AL pitching accolades aside from Eichhorn's 27 wins, go to New York hurler Noodles Hahn, who posted a 2.19 ERA, and strikeout king Fred Heimach of the Red Sox who whiffed 262 batters to lead those respective categories. World Series Update - 1914
Game One @ Robison Field, St. Louis:
Washington's George Van Haltren matched up with Kent Peterson of the Cardinals in game one of the 1914 World Series. The Cardinals, playing in their first-ever postseason game, drew first blood in the third when after Andre Dawson was plunked by Van Haltren and stole second, he came in to score on a single by catcher Sandy Alomar. The Senators scored in the fifth on an RBI triple by Chris Fulmer to knot the game at one, but the wheels came off for Washington in the home sixth. The Cardinals plated four runs with a couple of big doubles off the bats of Hub Collins and pitcher Kent Peterson. Peterson was excellent on the mound, scattering eight hits over the complete game, allowing just two runs - only one earned in a 5-2 win for St. Louis. Game Two @ Robison Field, St. Louis: Frank Fleet of the Cardinals faced Allyn Stout of the Senators in the second game of the World Series and Fleet was on the top of his game early. With the Cardinals scoring in the first on a solo home run by Barry Bonds, Fleet had tossed a couple of easy innings before leaving with an injury in the third. Willie Banks came on and also had an easy time of it - until the eighth. With the Cardinals entering the eighth leading 3-0 and Banks cruising, it looked like a long train ride to Washington was on hand for the Senators. But they scored four runs off Banks in that eighth to take a 4-3 lead. Alas, that wasn't good enough to escape with a win however, as the Cardinals came back - with the help of a huge error by Sens' shortstop Jeff Huson - to score a pair in the home half of the eighth and won 5-4. Game Three @ Griffith Stadium, Washington: With the Cardinals up 2-0, the third game became a must-win for the Senators, who were now playing before their home crowd in Washington's Griffith Stadium. And they took advantage with a fairly easy 6-3 win behind a three-hit day from Mark Salas and a pair of RBIs from Duff Cooley. Mark Eichhorn was aces for the Senators allowing just one earned run on six hits to get Washington back into the series. Joe Borowski took the loss for St. Louis. Game Four @ Griffith Stadium, Washington: The Senators knotted the series at two apiece in a rematch of the game one starting pitchers. This time it was George Van Haltren who was just a tad bit better than Kent Peterson in a 3-2 Washington victory. Derrell Griffith drove in two of the three runs for Washington which got three-hit performances from both Hans Lobert and Barry Bonnell. St. Louis had a three-hit game from Robin Yount, whose series average stood at .500 after the game, but it wasn't enough to get past a masterly Van Haltren. Game Five @ Griffith Stadium, Washington: With the series tied at two games and game five representing their final home game of the season, this was a must-win for the Senators, while for the Cardinals it represented a golden opportunity to return home with a 3-2 lead, needing to win just one of the two games in St. Louis. The Cardinals scored in the first, a Hub Collins double scoring a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead against Allyn Stout. While Stout settled down and held the Cards' scoreless, the offense chipped away against surprise Cards' starter Jim Abbott, scoring one run in the third and another in the seventh. This set up an extra-innings battle as the score remained 2-2 after nine innings. With Stout gone and Steve Woodard replacing him for the tenth, the Cardinals struck again. Yount singled and went to second on a walk to Alomar. Pop Schriver then singled to right to score Yount with that all-important third run. Though Woodard escaped further damage, the Senators could not score in the home half against Willie Banks who earned the save (Jerry DiPoto tossed a scoreless ninth in relief of Abbott and picked up the win), and the Cardinals took that 3-2 series lead back to Robison Field. Game Six @ Robison Field, St. Louis: The Cardinals threw another curveball by starting game five winner Jerry DiPoto in game six, while Mark Eichhorn got the ball for the Senators with their season on the line. The Senators scored on DiPoto in the third to take a 1-0 lead when Jack O'Brien singled to score Huson. But Eichhorn couldn't hold the lead, surrendering a trio of runs in the bottom of the same inning. The score remained at 3-1 into the eighth when the Cardinals exploded for a huge seven-run inning to go up 10-1 and seal their first-ever World's championship. DiPoto was masterful, allowing just the one run on six hits in eight innings of work, with Banks again working the final inning. Robin Yount finished 4-for-5 and ended the Series with a .538 average and the MVP award. Bonds hit his second homer of the series in the eighth and was the only batter to belt a circuit clout in the series.

Cool, I got Lyle. He's already developed enough to pitch in the rotation. Should provide a nice boost to my staff.

New season, same message - Reds stink
Now before they get too old (they're only 29) I've got two OF who can help anyone - Happy Felsch & Leron Lee. Looking for prospects. Pitching is first choice. Could use a catcher too. |

sadly it's looking like cleveland is jumping on the sucking bandwagon as well. and my stars aren't even old yet, just a sudden decline in production despite no slippage in ratings

Somehow we're managing to stay in 1st, although we're tied. I've been here many times before, though....only to fade in the final sim.

And the Cubs sneak in again - despite a down season from Spahn (19-19). I was lucky to hold off the Giants.

Tigers drop 110 games and are just horrible but are sitting at #2 best minor league system. To bad these guys just dont want to develop.
#1 pick will help feed us but till we get these guys to come up another 100 loss season is expected next year

Congratulations to the Senators - who knocked off the Cubs in 5 games.
The Draft for next season looks like there are a few interesting position players available. |
