I think the best suggestion I could give is to take a whack at it. maybe even do it by comparing the ratings of similar fighters. Then playtest the fighter against others. If the results look pretty legit then its a keeper. There are lots of tweeks and even throwaways that need to occur along the way . I gotta agree with the consesensus about Joe Grim that created a mini controversey. I downscaled his ratings and think that its more in line with the type of fighter he was.

Rating some "Tomato Cans".....

.....or whatever you want to call them. OK, I took a look at the career of the next Heavyweight that I wanted to rate, Rocco Mazzola from Italy. He fought from 1955-1962 holding the Italian HW Title briefly in 1961. He was 26-12-3,10KO in his career. The latter part of his career you 'll see some guys you might recognize, but many of his early/middle career opponents were the usual array of "Tomato Cans". No disrespect intended here by the way using this term.
Mazzola also held the Italian LHW Title for short while in the late 50's.

Anyway, I decided I'd take a look at these opponents of Mazzola as a way to begin rating some of these "bottom of the barrell" fighters in Europe to help me test ratings on some of the little bit better fighters of Europe of the 1960's that I want to continue rating. So here we go with the first 3 I've done for anyone who might have the slightest interest in these....

First off.....
VAnnes Benassi - Italy
Light Heavyweight 1951-1956

3 wins / 4 losses / 2 draws / 0 KO

Lost by DQ in the 5th in his first career fight to Middleweight Franco Festucci(45-3-2,25) in Festucci's 2nd career fight.

Lost a 6 round decision to future Italian Light Heavyweight Champion Domenico Baccheschi(15-7-3,8).

Fought future Italian Heavyweight Champion Rocco Mazzola in Mazzola's 2nd and 3rd career fights, loosing the first to Mazzola by 2nd round KO while the 2nd ended in a 6 round draw.

Enjoy I hope some will....

Rating some "Tomato Cans".....

Here's a real punching bag for you....

Heinz Motzelt - Germany(I'm assuming)
Light Heavyweight 1948-1956

0 wins / 10 losses / 1 draw / 0 KO

Fighting mainly out of Germany and his name would lead one to believe his nationality if German even though it's not listed in BoxRec. He was KO'd in 6 of the losses including his last 4 bouts. He lost an 8 round decision to Gerhard Hecht and was KO'd in 3 by Hans Stretz. Jose Gonzalez Ko'd Heinz in 2 rounds. Rocco Mazzola KO'd Heinz in the 2nd round in March 1956 afterwhich Heinz never fought again.

For what he's worth....

Last tonight, someone who's actually a little more interesting to look at and maybe not a bottom of the barrell Tomato in the truest sense.....

Domenico Baccheschi - Italy
Light Heavyweight - 1955-1960

15 wins / 7 losses / 3 draws / 8 KO

Birthplace: Arezzo, Italy

His career started out at 14-3-3 which was capped off by defeating Rocco Mazzola by 11th round TKO in Sept. 1958 for the Italian LIght Heavyweight Title. He lost that title though in his very next fight 3 months later in an 11th round KO by Sante Amonti. BAccheschi then lost 10 round decions to Mike Holt and Gawie de Klerk, KO'd in the 8th Plinio Scarabellin then was KO'd in 2 by Pekka Kokkonen to end his career.

Earlier career hilites were a 6 round decision win over a young Giulio Rinaldi and an 8 round draw with Uwe Janssen. He also fought 2 earlier fights with Rocco Mazzola loosing the first by 5th round KO and winning the 2nd, an 8 round decision.

Norton's Eleventh Fight
Date: 1969-09-25
Result: Norton KO 8

Gary Bates 17-18-2 (6)

From Las Vegas, Gary Bates built a career beating record of 17-8-2 (6) before he fights anyone rated in the game. The first notable that he faces is in March of 1969, when he fights a debuting Irish Pat Duncan. Duncan wins on points after 5 rounds. At the end of May he takes a fight with fellow Norton opponent Jimmy Gilmore, who has a record of 4-12-0 at the time of the fight. Gilmore takes the bout with a 6 round points decision. This lead to a meeting with the undefeated Ken Norton on the 25th of July, 1969. Norton would pound out an eighth round knock out win to move his record to 11-0-0 (10).

Bates would not fight again till June of 1970, where he fought Donnie Spencer and lost a 4 round points decision. In the first half of 1971 Bates would once again pull on the gloves this time fighting Charles Chuck Olivera twice in three months. In the first fight he would loose on points and in the second fight he would be Kayoed in the seventh. At the end of June he accepted a fight against a young Ron Lyle who knocked him out in the fourth. This seemed to be enough for Bates as he laid aside his gloves until coming back for three bouts in 1976. Norton's Twelfth Fight
Date: 1969-10-21

Julius Garcia 1-1-0 (1)

Julius Garcia had a two month career. At the end of August, 1969 he fought the undefeated Irish Pat Duncan (6-0-0 at the time of the fight) and ruined his record with a first round knock out. For his next fight he would try to spoil the undefeated Ken Norton's record. Norton would prove to be to polished for his however and Garcia would be KO'd in the third round.

Career Bouts:
1969-10-21 Ken Norton 11-0-0 L KO 3

FWIW I agree with Rocco and think that having some of the more talent challenged fighters in history makes the game more "real" 'cause let's face it even the 1 rated fighters in the game mostly had winning records built on the back of impressive records against local "tomato cans". It also it quite fun when some of these fighters, like Julius Garcia whom I posted above, pull out the spoiler victory that ruins a hot prospects run to the top when running a universe.

That's my 2c anyway

Mark

Rating some "Tomato Cans".....

Georges Bracco - France
Middleweight 1954-1957

0 wins / 5 losses / 0 draw / 0 KO

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto

BoxRec does not list nationality nor weight division. Three of his 5 opponants were middleweight so I'm listing him as such. Started out of France and name would indicate French nationality. He actually fought all decent looking European fighters who put together good records on paper.

He started out fighting a couple of decent looking middleweights, Frenchman, Adnre Drille(54-8-8,19) and Italian Guido Mazzinghi(33-1-0,17). He lost to Drille on points in 6 rounds in Oct. 1954, then didn't fight again till Oct. 1955 when Mazzinghi KO'd him in the first round. Next up was Rocco Mazzola in June 1956. Mazzola KO'd Bracco in the 7th. Another year layoff before he got into the ring again in May 1957 against another middleweight, Jo Lammers(14-4-0,13) from The Netherlands. Jo KO'd Georges in the 2nd round. Georges then gave it one more try in October 1957 when he went into the ring against Pekka Kokkonen(37-16-4,27) a light heavyweight. No contest, Pekka KO's Georges in the first round.

Joseph Landsheere - Belgium
Light Heavyweight 1956-59

0 wins / 4 losses / 0 draw / 0 KO

Rating by: Rocco Del sesto

Basically a clone of Georges Bracco except that he is listed as a light heavyweight and he's from Belgium. KO'd 3 times in his 4 fights, first one being by Rocco Mazzola. He managed a 10 round decision loss with Raul Roux.

Rating some "Tomato Cans".....

Widmer Milandri - Italy
Middleweight 1946-57

4 wins / 14 losses / 2 draws / 0 KO

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto

KO'd in 8 of his 14 losses. His first recorded professional fight was in Sept 1946 when he defeated Italo Palmarini in a 12 round decision for the Italian Middleweight Title. He followed that with 2 more wins in 1946 including an 8 round decision over Fernando Jannilli and then a title defense against Augusto Teti again winning a 12 round decision.

Widmer then lost 14 of his final 17 career bouts but they were against mostly some very noteable middleweights and light heavyweights. He lost first 10 round decisions to Cyriel Delannoit and Vince Hawkins. Then Laurent Dauthuille KO'd him in 2 rounds. IN July 1947 he fought a Giovanni Manca for the Italian Middleweight Title loosing a 12 round decision. Manca later abandoned the title. After that Milandri did not fight for 2-1/2 years before making a comeback in the ring in Feb. 1950 against Richard Murphay(30-19-1,10), loosing a 6 round decision to Murphy.

That was followed by KO losses to light heavyweights Alex Buxton and Alessandro D'Ottavio. Then came an 8 round decision loss to Hans Stretz. Milandri then in Jan 1952 fought an 8 round draw with D'Ottavio and then in December 1952 fought Ivano Fontana for the Italian Middleweight Title. They fought to a 12 round draw. Fontana later abandoned his title. Next came a 2nd round KO at the hands of Charles Humez.

In Oct. 1953 Milandri defeated D'Ottavio in a 12 round decision to win the Italian Middleweight Title. That was followed a couple months later by a 5th round KO loss to Gordon Hazell(31-13-2,14). In June 1954 he lost his Middleweight title to Burno Tripodi(22-7-2,11) by a 12 round decision. Milandri then finished his career with KO losses to Rocco Mazzola, Giulio Rinaldi and Domenico Baccheschi.

Norton's Thirteenth Fight
Date: 1970-02-04
Result: Norton KO 2

Aaron Eastling
21-15-2 (7)

From St Paul, Minnesota, Eastling was active from the mid sixties till 1972. After winning his first fight he would lose a 4 round points decision to a debuting Orville Qualls. He would reel off six straight wins through the early part of 1967 before he fought Qualls again on the 15th of March, 1967. This time the two would fight to a draw in six rounds. Eastling KO's his next opponent in the second round on the 7th of April before fighting Qualls in the tiebreaker on the 24th of April. Once again they would go the distance but this time Eastling would take the decision to give him a 1-1-1 record against Qualls. Exactly a month later he won a points decision over Memphis Al Jones, who would later in his mediocre career would KO Boone Kirkman in the third round.

On the 5th of June, Eastling would face the undefeated Alvin "Blue" Lewis, a matchup that he would lose in the 5th round via a KO. After a 2 month lay off (which is like a two year layoff for Eastling who had fought every second week for three months at this stage) Eastling would get back on track with a points victory over Billy Williams. On the 2nd of Feburary 1968 he would face the considerably bigger James J Beattie who manhandled Eastling on the way to a fifth round KO. Through the rest of 1968 Eastling would pad his record 5 wins and a draw against fighters with impressive looking records built on poor opposition.

With the start of 1969, Eastling moved into a late January meeting against Jerry Quarry as a warm up fight for Buster Mathis. Though game Eastling was no match for Quarry and once again he was KO'd in the fifth round. This result would mark the beginning of the end for Eastling as he suffered two further stoppage losses through the remainder of 1969. The new decade started well for Eastling with a points victory in ten rounds, but on the 4th of Feburary he fought Ken Norton. Norton would prove to be far too accomplished for Eastling and he was KO'd in the second round. Two months later he would fight an undefeated George Foreman (18-0-0) and he would creditably last 4 rounds against the behemoth. A creditable 10 round points loss against Roy "Cookie" Wallace at the start of August and a 2 round KO loss against Ted Gullick at the start of September signalled the beginning of the end despite two wins in October and November (his last victory a 6 round points win over Mark White). His last notable fights were a series of three losses on the 6th of April, 1971 to Charles Chuck Olivera by points in ten, the 4th of June against Olivera a fifth round TKO loss and a fifth round KO loss only three days later.

Charles Chuck Olivera
12-2-1 (8)

From Tucson, AZ Olivera was very active through 1971 fighting 12 fights through the year. He would fight twice more in 1972 and then once in 1974 before retiring for good. Olivera started his career with 11 straight wins, including a 12 round points victory over Johnny Featherman for the Arizona State HW title on the 8th of Feburary. On the 17th of the same month he would beat Gary Bates on points over eight rounds. On the 6th of April he fought a fading Aaron Eastling on points after 10 rounds. On the 5th of May he would fight Bates again and win by a knockout in the seventh.

The start of June would see Olivera fight three times in 5 days. On the 3rd he knocked out Terry Sorrell in the seventh round. On the 4th he would face Eastling again and win via TKO in the fifth and on the seventh he would knockout Eastling in the fifth round again. On the 24th of July he stopped Walter Jackson. At the end of the year Olivera faced the only 'name' fighter of his career in Danny McAlindon. McAlindon would prove to be to much for him knocking him out in the seventh. After taking six months off he stops a debuting Ron Steiger and a month later he fought to a draw with Reco Brooks. After a two year layoff Olivera fought Memphis Al Jones but he wasn't able to take the win, loosing on points over 10 rounds.

Orville Qualls
11-9-1 (6)

A 6'6" 250+ lbs giant from Omaha, NE he was never able to translate his inate advantages into a big pro career. After building an impresive record against the likes of Aaron Eastling and Memphis Al Jones, he fought James J Beattie in early 1968. Beattie would Knock him out in the third round. From that point on Qualls builds a 2-8-0 (1) record, facing the likes of Larry Frazier, Duane Bobick and Mike Weaver.

Norton replay

Enjoying your replay Gunsmoke! Keep up it. Thanks especially for Eastling. He's one I've come across at times looking through 60's HW's and keep intending to rate him. Saved me the time on that one!

One of these day's I'm going to get back to my Zech replay and finish that up and then start on the Folley one that I intended. Right now I've been busy sneaking in a few ratings here and there in between trying to get into my data base all the different fighters everyone has posted here and at Cornerwork. That's been a task. As I import them I try to write into the bio who did what fighter.

So far I'm up to 4515 fighters and that's without the women in it whom I deleted!! Some are duplicates of guys rated a bit differently by different people or in the original game.

Thanks again Gunsmoke and to all who keep contributing fighters, pics and all on this forum!!

Norton Replay

Norton's Fourteenth Fight
Date: 1970-03-13
Result: Norton by TKO in the third round

Stamford Harris
16-30-1 (3)

Harris, a 6'5" giant from Jamaica, never lived up to the power that potentially resided in his huge frame. During the fifties he often fought at around 200-210 pounds, a stick figure of a fighter with a huge reach advantage. In his first 12 fights he only fought against debutants. The only exception was a return bout against Jason Jean-Pierre who beat him in a first round TKO in his fifth fight. On the 12th of March, 1958 he fought Jason Jean-Pierre (who at this stage had a record of 1-2-0) for the Haitian Heavyweight title despite three straight points losses. Jean-Pierre would beat him on points over the course of the 15 round bout. Harris breaks his run of losses with a fourth round stoppage victory over another debutant, Junior Grant. He would then loose his next 7 fights including three losses to Bahamian Carl Baker and two losses to Peter Robinson. After a four rounds points victory over Peter Robinson on the 31st of October, 1963, Harris would fight Carl Baker for the vacant Jamaican Heavyweight championship. Baker would once again prove to be too good and would take the points decision. After another loss to Peter Robinson he took a 15 month vacation from the ring. When he decided to come back he moved straight into a match-up against Baker for the Jamaican Heavyweight title and once again would be out-pointed.

After another year layoff Harris once again got back in the ring this time lossing his first two fights back in the Bahamas by KO. At this point Harris moved to Canada to continue his career and fought some borderline regional contenders and earnt himself a 4-1-1 record over his next 6 fights. This earnt him a fight against George Chuvalo on the 8th of September, 1969. Chuvalo would KO him in two rounds. Norton would be his next opponent and Norton and another quick stoppage loss, this time a third round TKO. After a quick KO victory over Bob Ellis, he would be KO'd by Jerry Quarry in six. In his next fight he lost to Jose Manuel Urtain by KO in the second. In April 1971, he fought a young fearsome Goerge Foreman in a tune up fight for the NABF Heavyweight title fight that Foreman won against Goyo Peralta. Foreman destroyed Harris in two rounds to win by KO. He would lose against Rahmin Ali 13 days later on points over 10 rounds, and in May he suffered a points defeat to Jeff Merritt. Another layoff this time of 9 months in length would be ended with a tour of Europe where he fought Piermario Baruzzi and lost by decision and then Dante Cane and lost by stoppage in the fifth. He ended his tour against Jose Urtain in Spain and DQ'd his way out of a certain beating. He then returned to Canada and fought his last fight against Doug Kirk and managed to win via TKO in the second and promptly retired on a winning note.

Rahman Ali
14-3-1 (6)
1964-1972

Born Rudy Clay in Louisville, Kentucky the brother of Cassius Clay, who became Muhammad Ali and arguably the greatest heavyweight of all time. Ali debuted on the 25th of Feburary in '64 against either Chip Johnson or Prentice Snipes (both are listed as occuring on the same day). Both bouts ended in points victories for Ali after four rounds. After a 14 month layoff in his thrid fight he moves straight into 10 rounders taking on Levi Forte on the 28th April, taking the bout on points. A month later he fights Buster Reed and wins via a KO in the second round. With another 9 month layoff he fights Fairchild Hope and wins via a TKO in the second.

Rahman would act as his brothers sparring partner till 1968 when Muhammad was jailed for refusing the draft. Rahman would emerge again in 1970 with a Unanimous Decision victory over Tommy Howard on the 11th of August. Another points victory in december seemed to indicate a bright future for the "other" Ali and a fight with another emerging talent in Danny McAlindon was signed for the 8th of March 1971. McAlindon proved to be too much for Ali though and he took the six round points decision. A tour of the carribean provided the opportunity for fighting the local talent in April 1971 starting with Clement Greenidge on the 9th and a 10 round points victory. On the 16th he outpointed Stamford Harris over 10. On the 23rd he fought and beat Peter Robinson via TKO in the second round. On the 30th he outpointed Carl Baker over 10 rounds. KO victories over Larry Beilfuss, a young Harold "70s Version" Carter and in December over Joe Byrd seemed to point to Rahman's bright future. On the 22nd of January, '72 Ali would draw with Jasper Evans in a 10 rounder and then a points loss to Roy "Cookie" Wallace seemed to take the shine off the star so by the time Ali lost to Jack O'Halloran via an 8th round KO, Ali walked away from his boxing career to work in his returning brother's corner. What could have Rahman's career been like if he had not put his brother's career before his, particularly in the mid to late 60s.

Career Bouts:
1972-09-14 Jack O'Halloran 26-15-2 L KO 8
1972-05-08 Roy (Cookie) Wallace 12-15-2 L PTS 10
1972-01-22 Jasper Evans 3-3-0 D PTS 10
1971-12-16 Joe Byrd 14-16-1 W TKO 4
1971-10-27 Harold Carter 7-9-2 W KO 3
1971-09-13 Larry Beilfuss 6-1-0 W KO 2
1971-04-30 Carl Baker 18-9-1 W PTS 10
1971-04-23 Peter Robinson 6-2-0 W TKO 2
1971-04-16 Stamford (Kid) Harris 15-25-1 W PTS 10
1971-04-09 Clement Greenidge 0-2-0 W PTS 10

Prentice Snipes
18-11-0 (8)
1961-1967

Snipes was an opponent for some of the contenders of the 60's. From Miami Florida Snipes started his career on fire, building a 14-3-0 (5) against the local record builders till early 1963 from his debut in 1961. On the 15th of April, '63 Snipes faces the first test of his career when he fights a young Levi Forte (at that point in his career 8-3-2). He would KO Forte in the seventh round. That earnt him a match up with Tony Alongi in June. Alongi would prove to be to skilled for Snipes and he would suffer his first stoppage loss a fourth round KO. A 3rd round KO victory against Johnny Pew seemed to show that his first stoppage had not effected him. On the 11th of December he was stopped for the second time that year loosing on a 9th round TKO to young Chip Johnson (at the time 3-2-0). On the 25th of Feburary of 1964 he would fight Rahman Ali in the laters debut fight loosing a 4 round points decision. A win over a debuting Jim Hanks and an 8 round points loss to Chip Johnson led to a 12 month retirement for Snipes. Upon his return to the ring he fought on the 23rd of Janu 1965 and won a 10 round points decision victory over Willie Johnson. On the 10th of August he fought Tony Alongi, looking to avenge his first stoppage loss, this time he fared better but still lost a unanimous decision over 10 rounds. A month later he fought Doug Jones and was KO'd in the second round. Five months later and a young Jerry Quarry would further prove his quality with a 5th round KO. 11 months later Hubert Hilton put Snipes in retirement for good with a 3rd round KO on the 20th of January 1967.

Talking about "tomato cans" and "trial horses"...I came across a group of interesting fighters in the 1920's & early 30's that caught my eye. They are difficult to rate because they didn't really fight anyone you could compare them to in our database but I'm posting one of them here, George Trafton.

Trafton is an NFL Hall of Famer and he got involved in some pro boxing in his early 30's, KOing some no-names and finally getting KO'd himself in one round by Primo Carnera.

Among the "no-names was a guy by the name of Art [The Great] Shires. Shires himself was a pro baseball player. BoxRec says "Shires is a famous and popular Chicago White Sox baseball player (first baseman) at this time, and Trafton is a Chicago Bears professional football player (and later became a Pro Football Hall-of-Famer)."

Take a quick look at Shires record-must have been some interesting times for sports fans. He fought other pro baseball players, Al Spohrer and Tony Faeth and was also involved in some controversial bouts. BoxRec says at one point he gave up boxing and "Shires attempted to be "a bigger success at basket ball than at boxing" when he played forward for the Philadelphia Spha team, but found that none of his team-mates would pass him the ball."

I'm sure these stories have to come up in my universe down the road!

p.s I put a pic of him in the "Missing fighter photos" thread.
