October 2317
BNN Report News from the CBO, Minors, CCBL, CYL, and CBA by Nat Wright-Kawolski 8 October 2317 Offseason: Retirements, HOF Talk, and Record Holders The 2317 season has seen the end of many brilliant careers that will cause Commissioner Jimmy LaRue a few aches and pains in his announcement earlier in the year that he has started a committee for creating a Hall of Fame. As of this week, several CBO greats have announced their retirement, upping our assumed list of HOF-eligible players to somewhere around 50 players. Some of the top players retiring this season include: Babs Rooth, County Crossing - 4 Nuka Hitter awards, 14 All-Star selections Lannie Tykeson, Easy Town - 1 Nuka Hitter award, 11 Corvega Top Defender awards, 11 All-Star selections Jumper Hayes, Nordhagen Beach - 10 All-Star selections, 9 Corvega Top Defender awards Earthbound Bussey, Atom - 1 Nuka Hitter award, 8 Corvega Top Defender awards, 6 All-Star selections Oren Gep, Starlight - 9 All-Star selections Harry Byrd, Vault 81 - 11 All-Star selections CBO Records Updated single-season and career records are below: The Slog Sold One-time The Slog player and a surprise (at the time) retirement as a coach, Stoop Bugwing kept things on the downlow. It was announced over the weekend that Bugwing is the lead of a group that purchased The Slog from Wiseman, founder of the settlement, The Slog. Wiseman had mentioned that he felt the days of being a businessman is behind him, and he respected what Bugwing brought to the settlement and team. The commissioner has not approved or acknowledged any requests for change. Front office personnel, including GM Dan Dall and manager Melvin Ceja, seem to remain in place for now. CBO Noteworthy News The draft combine has concluded. We will spend the rest of the month previewing the upcoming CBO Draft in early November. Now that the season has finished, it's time to look forward to the future, and what better way than to look at the brightest future stars of the league, courtesy of BNN. Great series indeed! Quincy almost pulled it off again, but glad Easy Town came out on top. CBO fans were definitely treated to a show!

October 2317
BNN Report News from the CBO, Minors, CCBL, and CYL by Nat Wright-Kawolski 10 October 2317 CBO Draft Preview #1 With just a month to the 2317 CBO Draft, we want to start looking, not at the prospects in detail, but to compare the BNN mock 10 to the initial OSA Mock Draft. You see, we like to look at prospects, too! The OSA believes that County Crossing will select CF Derek Cureall out of Winthrop College as the #1 overall pick. Their complete 1st round mock below: Now, we at BNN want to break down a bit of a different perspective: looking at the current needs of the Top 10 teams picking and which player may best slot into the pick, along with alternative picks. We have defaulted to the OSA for where in the draft they think players will go. It is not as simple as an 80 potential rating being #1. In fact, in OSA's first 10 picks, only three picks are rated 80 out of the 16 total 80-rated players. OSA considers 80 to be a potential CBO star. On the opposite end of the scale, a 20 potential would be considered having no chance to make it to the CBO. Now looking at team needs, this is what we think are the top two position groups for teams to consider when drafting based on their overall position group ranking of the 28 CBO teams: 1. County Crossing - SP (27th) and RF (27th) 2. Salem - CF (26th) and C (25th) 3. Bunker Hill - SS (28th) and LF (28th) 4. Goodneighbor - RF (26th) and SP (23rd) 5. Southie - CF (28th) and SP (24th) 6. Egret - C (27th) and RF (25th) 7. Nordhagen Beach - 3B (28th) and SP (19th) 8. University Point - 2B (24th) and 1B (24th) 9. Roxbury - SP (22nd) and 3B (21st) 10. Spectacle Island - 1B (27th) and SS (23rd) We understand that current needs are not always the way to go. For example, the consensus is that Cureall is the draft's best player. He plays a premier position, CF, so the Bloodbugs could address their RF need by drafting Cureall and then working in whomever they need to fill RF in the meantime while Cureall gets CBO ready. For the record, OSA scouts see Cureall as a straight-to-the-CBO pick, meaning his value in the present is much higher than any long-term prospect. That brings us at BNN to our thoughts on what the first ten teams picking may decide to do. 1. County Crossing - CF Derek Cureall, Winthrop The Bloodbugs pick the best player in the draft. Cureall slots into the leadoff role at either CF or LF, with Frak Meng moving to RF. Cureall will be the Day 1 starter for the Bugs, so he should be the pick. In case he is not . . . Alternatives: SP Casan Evans, Assumption; LF Bad Company Gondek, Bentley 2. Salem - CF Sandy Slinky, Endicott College Slinky's prospects are not as high as Cureall, but he is considered to be a high pick in the 2317 draft. Since the Witch Hats need a CF, Slinky as the pick is probable unless Cureall is somehow available. Slinky is also considered to be able to play in the CBO from Day 1, but OSA has him currently at the AAA/AA range for current ratings. Alternatives: CF Derek Cureall (if not taken 1, he will definitely go 2); SS Early Duvet, Worcester Crows 3. Bunker Hill - LF Bad Company Gondek, Bentley The 75ers fell off from being IL champions to picking toward the top of the draft. While pitching was a bigger problem, another bat would benefit them. Gondek would not be a Day 1 solution, though, with OSA placing him in the AA/A range for current ratings. In time, though, Gondek would make a great hitter to play pepper off the outfield walls at Battle of Bunker Hill Memorial Stadium. Alternatives: SS Early Duvet; SS Groundhog Molony, Acadia College 4. Goodneighbor - SP Casan Evans, Assumption Evans is the best pitcher in the draft, and OSA scouts believe that he has ace potential in a strong pitcher's class. Evans has Day 1 potential to start toward the bottom of the rotation and then work his way up. Both Harley Buechel and Dave Cregger are passable, meaning that it is likely Evans would be the third starter behind Jared Porch and Jules Alder. Alternatives: SP Talley O'Reilly, Rockport Seafarers; LF Bad Company Gognak (if not taken at #3) 5. Southie - SP Talley O'Reilly, Rockport Seafarers If the Brews were picking at the top of the draft again, like in 2316 when they took CF Ditcher Doyle Cobbler as the #1 overall pick, then the Brews would be picking one of the top two CFers again. Since they have Cobbler, who is expected to move into the permanent starting position with the Brews in 2318, they need to go in a different direction: pitcher. O'Reilly probably would not be in the CBO in 2318, but he could be there in 2319, assuming that the CYL star would go straight to the AAA or AA level. Alternatives: 2B Otto Megaphone, Plymouth State; LF Shalvey O'Doherty, Haverhill Detectives 6. Egret - C Sevenfold Abrams, Western Connecticut State The first catcher mentioned, Abrams does not grade out as high as some of the younger players in Daniel Bowler, Rad Malina, and Flavi Muja because of the higher hitter potential those players have. What Abrams could provide is backup catcher duty from Day 1 thanks to his great glove and potential to be a solid all-around hitter. Hugo Steadymaster would remain as the starter, though his hitting must improve to keep that role. Abrams would have a chance to supplant Steadymaster in 2319. Alternatives: LF Shalvey O'Doherty; 3B Music Man Hughes, WCSU 7. Nordhagen Beach - 2B Otto Megaphone, Plymouth State The OSA scouts have Megaphone going 2nd overall, so that made us look at what he offers to a team in 2318. The answer is potential, which may lead an IF-starved team like the Party Boys to seek out a starter via trade. Megaphone has high potential anywhere in the infield, and he can also slip into the outfield as needed, making his utility value great. His hitting needs a lot of work, but he has potential to be a great hitter for average in the CBO. The Boys would make this pick as a 2319/2320 stash since Megaphone would currently grade into the AA/A range. Alternatives: 3B King Fish Davenport, South Charles Bank Moonies; 2B Kicks Stannard, Commonwealth U 8. University Point - 2B Kicks Stannard, Commonwealth U While Megaphone has more potential, Stannard is currently more CBO-ready, especially with his glove. The CCBL's season saw some record-breaking performances, including the top six single-season batting average records (and 16 of the top 19 single-season performances), and Stannard is second on that list, hitting .521 in 2317 with the Terriers. Stannard could almost be penciled in as the Day 1 starter with the Deathclaws if he were to be selected here. Alternatives: 1B Heady Stepniewski, New Haven Sailors; SS Early Duvet 9. Roxbury - SS Early Duvet, Worcester Crows One of our favorite prospects, the CYL star battered other youth pitchers for four years, finishing with a .377/82/246 line. He is a great middle infielder who could also boune to the left side of the field if needed. The bright side is also that the Rad Sox do not need Duvet immediately with one of the CBO's better middle infields in Brennan Colt-45 and Odd Todd Walker. The Sox could develop Duvet in 2318 and help him develop more skills before unleashing him on the CBO in 2319. Alternatives: SS Groundhog Molony; SP Fog Slater, Portland Trappers 10. Spectacle Island - SS Groundhog Molony, Acadia College Like Duvet, Malony is close but not quite ready for the CBO. He projects as a AAA starter, though, so he should get good work in with the Clifton Vertibirds of the NEBL if that is the case. Alternatives: 1B Heady Stepniewski; LF Shalvey O'Doherty Commonwealth Collegiate Baseball League The CCBL has added 10 more institutions of higher learning and baseball skills, and several teams have switched conferences. New colleges are: Babson Beavers Salve Regina Seahawks Albertus Magnus Falcons Maine-Presque Isle Owls Hellenic American Greeks Maine Maritime Academy Mariners Rivier Raiders Elms College Blazers Lesley Lynx U.S. Coast Guard Academy Bears Maine-Presque Isle and Hellenic American joined 10 other teams to form a new conference, the New England Athletic Conference. They are joined with Post, Franklin Pierce, Saint Anselm College, Bentley, Bridgeport, Southern New Hampshire, Assumption, American International, New Haven, and Rhode Island School of Design. Babson will join thje Boston Collegiate Athletic Conference. In the Massachusetts Conference, Revere College, Nicholls College, and Salem State join the nine other remaining schools. Vermont State moved to the Northern Commonwealth Conference. Salve Regina and Albertus Magnus join Bryant and Sacred Heart into the Southern Commonwealth Conference. In the Atlantic Sound Conference, Westerly Education Academy, Westfield State, and University of Narragansett joined. In the Mid-Commonwealth Conference, Worcester Polytechnic Institute joined the smallest conference, keeping the number at eight teams. Maine Maritime Academy, Rivier, Elms College, Lesley, and USCGA are all independents in 2318 with future plans for those teams, as well as the remaining independents--WCSU, Plymouth State, and MCLA--to join conferences around 2320 or later.

October 2317
BNN Report News from the CBO, Minors, CCBL, and CYL by Nat Wright-Kawolski 17 October 2317 Draft Preview 2 Last week, we looked at the OSA Mock Draft and compared where we think the Top Ten players will go based on team needs and OSA fit. This week, we will look at the next 10 players based on potential ratings, not the OSA Mock Draft. Here are the next 10 players with no adherence to draft expectations, just pure scouting potential ratings (80): 11. 3B Music Man Hughes, WCSU Hughes is a draft-eligible sophomore after his school, Western Connecticut State, joined the CCBL in 2317. In his one season in the CCBL, Hughes hit .368/24/58, showing good balance between contact and power. He is a raw prospect right now, though, and will need to adjust to even more pitch types in the CBO. Scouts see him starting in A or AA for this team and then working his way up as his pitch recognition improves. He should also be a solid 3B at any level. 12. 1B Heady Stepniewski, New Haven Sailors Stepniewski appears to be one of the power leaders in the 2317 draft and will be expected to fulfill that role in the CBO. He projects at 1B but may get work at 2B in the minors for a power-dependent team looking for options. Stepniewski hit .377/26/58 his senior season, and hit 82 homers over his four years with the Sailors. 13. SP Fog Slater, Portland Trappers Slater may have been projected to go #1 overall to County Crossing had he not torn a ligament in his throwing arm in the 2317 CYL season. Before that, he was 5-2 with a 0.83 ERA in nine starts. In 65.1 innings, he allowed six earned runs and 30 hits, while walking eight and striking out 94. While his elbow injury will keep him from throwing for the next three months, if his recovery goes well, he would project to start in AA or AAA with a chance for a callup later in the season. 14. SP D'Jasper Probincrux II, Harwich Fishheads Probincrux really helped his draft status during his senior season with the Fishheads, recording a 10-1 record with a 1.52 ERA in 15 starts. While not blessed with a blazing fastball, Probincrux has shown the ability to keep his pitches moving and using a deadly inside-out routine to keep hitters off balance. Scouts think that he could be the 4th starter on the right team but could also be placed as high as AAA while he tries to develop more. 15. 1B Pond LeHockey, Hester Mechanists A born leader, according to coaches and scouts, LeHockey is expected to contribute to his team at whichever level he joins. Scouts think that may be AA as he looks to grow more into his 6'4" frame. LeHockey upped his home run number to 21 his senior season with the Mechanists, up from 13 the season before. Scouts think he will bat over .300 and hit around 20 homers a season while being a decent defensive 1B. 16. C Flavi Muja, Holy Cross Muja is the power hitter of the catchers and the second best defensively behind Sevenfold Abrams. With Holy Cross, the junior hit .349/28/80, 4th in the CCBL in both homers and RBI. Scouts think that he will be an extra-base hit machine in the CBO. They project him to start at the AA level. 17. 2B Kolar Raven, Plum Island Candymen The CYL star has been getting more and more powerful, hitting a career-best 23 in 2317 with the Candymen. While not the best defensive players, expect Raven in the middle of a lineup in his career. Scouts put him at the A/AA level to begin. If a team wants improved defense, he might see himself in A or even the Rookie League, though that is rare for players chosen in the top three rounds. 18.1B Pekka Rhubarb, Salem Werewolves The switch-hitting Rhubarb is an interesting prospect. He has power, though he will never be considered cleanup hitter worthy. What he does have is great bat control, and the CBO should see him eventually popping much better than a .310 average while he will probably hit around 15 homers per season. Scouts love his glove and can see him earning a few Corvega Top Defender awards at 1B. He could also play middl infield in a pinch, though his long, lanky build better suits him on the corner. 19. SP Brandon Sparrow, Commonwealth U You would think Sparrow would be higher after going 26-2 with a sub 2.00 ERA over the past two seasons. He is here because scouts love the fastball, a killer pitch at up to 99 MPH, but his movement and placement could both use a lot of work before he is ready to be a CBO starter. If a team takes him, Sparrow could find himself starting in AA or AAA or even be as high as a RP on the CBO squad in his first season. Base on his results in his two years as a starter after converting from a closer his freshman season, Sparrow is an interesting prospect that we are sure to see taken somewhere in the 1st round. 20. 1B Kully Puistiola, Braintree Schoolboys Scouts see a lot of potential in Puisiola, though it is doubtful if he will be anywhere ready for the CBO for at least a couple of seasons. That could see Puistiola pushed out of the 1st round. It could also be a mistake to pass on him. Scouts see him as a great all-around hitter who will be serviceable at 1B. The lefty is already CBO-ready when it comes to fighting off junk pitches, but he needs a lot of work on building up patience and driving the right pitches at the right times. Not on list: C Daniel Bowler, Lewiston Raiders; C Rad Malina, Hampton Tailors; SP Alex Moon, Cape Cod

October 2317
BNN Report News from the CBO, Minors, CCBL, and CYL by Nat Wright-Kawolski 22 October 2317 Draft Preview 3 This week, we will look at 10 college prospects that we think will make waves in the CBO one day. These are not typically projected to be 1st round picks (with the exception of one wildcard on our list projected as a high pick). What they do have is talent that showed itself in the CCBL in 2317 and for some, previous seasons, too. 10 College Players to Watch: 1. CL Joseph Walter Fifteen, Brown Fifteen is on this list because there is a possibility that he will be one of the CBO’s 28 closers to start the 2317 season. Fifteen has amazing stuff with great placement and decent movement on his fastball and curveball. Scouts see Fifteen as already ranked somewhere in the 15-20 range among closers. He may not go to the 2nd round or later, but Fifteen is the most CBO-ready player to come out of the draft in a while. Current OSA Projection: Not in top five rounds. 2. SP Ugly Bobby Lopan, ECSU Lopan could see his name called in the 1st round. His 11-2, 2.33 ERA as a junior with the Warriors shows that he is getting better and better. Scouts think his movement will help him to be an efficient pitcher from the beginning. Scouts think that Lopan could end up in either AAA or the CBO to start based on the team selecting him. Current OSA Projection: Not in top five rounds. 3. SP Jaden Newt, Commonwealth U Newt’s draft prospectus may be negatively influenced but the fact that he was never able to pitch a complete season with the Terriers. He started eight games in 2317, finishing 5-1 with a 2.38 ERA. When on, Newt has killer stuff that blows by hitters on his fastballs. He will dip into a strong slider with occasional usage of his average changeup and curveball. He will be a coach one day, but CBO teams hope he is just a healthy team leader in the meantime. Current OSA Projection: Concord 1(14). 4. RF Glen Pitts, Boston College Pitts is a good defensive corner outfielder, expected to split time between LF and RF. He grades as being a high contact hitter with just enough pop to keep him in the top six in the lineup. He hit .401 with 13 home runs and 55 RBI as a junior, leading the Eagles in all three categories. Scouts think he may start in AAA. Current OSA Projection: Salem, 4(2). 5. 2B Peppino Civetta, Winthrop College Civetta is a wildcard prospect who could see his name called in the 1st round, or he may have to wait. Scouts do not see him as a sure-bet star, but he most certainly will play in the CBO. That time could be as early as 2318. Civetta is listed as a 2B because he would be the yearly Corvega Defender Award winner there. A team may need him on the left side of the infield at SS or 3B, though, where he would be good but not as dominant. With the bat, he hit well in college, including an impressive .424/24/65 line his junior season. That helped him to finish 18th in the Top Collegiate Hitter Award voting. Scouts see him as being an OK hitter at the CBO level, probably in the .275/15/50 range in his best seasons. Current OSA Projection: Goodneighbor, 2(4). 6. LF Two Face Hale, Revere College Hale can hit quite well, including hitting .439 in his junior season. Scouts see him eventually topping .300 regularly in the CBO. He can play anywhere in the outfield and 1B as needed. He would be best in LF. Scouts also think of Hale as a high-character guy. While he is probably going AA/AAA to start, scouts can see him playing on the CBO team during callups and probably full-time by 2319. Current OSA Projection: Quincy, 2(21). 7. RF Jiminy Christmas, Yale Christmas started his freshman season at Yale as a scrawny kid with little pop to his bat. He leaves as one of the nation’s best power hitters at the collegiate level. Scouts think that he will be a hitting coach’s dream, able to keep at bats alive and pop it over the fence at a high enough rate to be constantly dangerous. He will be decent defensively. A season in AA could benefit him and his team in the long run. Current OSA Projection: FHE, 3(19). 8. LF Buckey O’Malley, Quincy College After hitting .468 in 2317 with the Masons, O’Malley may be ready to slide into the right lineup from Day 1. Scouts think he will already hold his own for contact and avoiding strikeouts. While his hitting may not translate to a lot of home runs, he can be a doubles machine, especially if he plays in a park with a large outfield. He is considered a top-tier defensive outfielder who can play anywhere in the outfield but best suited in LF. Current OSA Projection: Cambridge, 2(12). 9. SP Garbage Moore, Saint Anselm College The Hawks joined the CCBL In 2317, so Moore only has one year of stats in the league to show. Those stats are impressive, going 9-6 with a 2.67 ERA. Moore will need time to hone his skills, so he will probably start out as low as the BMU (A). He has good movement in his pitches, with a four-pitch repertoire with an equal propensity to use fastballs, screwballs, and sinkers. Current OSA Projection: Egret, 2(6). 10. RF Biddy Juhan, Revere College Juhan is the most interesting of the 10 prospects listed here. One red flag scouts point out is that they think he is not far from his peak. Right now, scouts think that he is going straight to the CBO for whichever team takes him, especially an OF-hungry team. He can play anywhere in the OF and play it well. He is also projected to be a solid hitter, maybe not the .477/27/71 as he hit as a junior for the Riders, but definitely a .300/15/50 type. While not the most aggressive of base stealers, Juhan can swipe a base from time to time. OSA scouts see Juhan going late in the 2nd round (22nd), but we think he will go earlier. Current OSA Projection: Malden, 2(22). 2nd Round Mock 3rd Round Mock 4th Round Mock 5th Round Mock CBO Awards NCA Hitter - The future looks extremely bright for Eden Babz. At the age of 23, many players are still trying to find their way in Commonwealth Baseball Organization. Babz has not only found his way, he's already established himself as one of the game's brightest stars, today being named the winner of the North Charles Association Nuka-Hitter Award. "I didn't expect to hit .317 this year, that's for sure," the center fielder said. The Easy Town Assaultrons star also put up a .389 on-base percentage this year, with 142 hits, 18 doubles, 6 triples, 21 home runs, 90 RBIs and 98 runs scored. He received 12 first place votes out of a possible 28. Jack of Diamonds Cordero of the Malden Grognaks finished second in voting with 10 first place votes, while Gavin Deux-Gas of the The Slog Ghouls finished third. For his standout run through the 2317 season, he's taking home the Nuka-Hitter Award in the South Charles Association. The Jamaica Plain third baseman put up a batting average of .337 with 24 doubles, 9 triples, 35 home runs and 112 RBIs. He received 28 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. The 38-year-old Synths starter hoisted up the North Charles Association Vim! Pitcher Award earlier today, silencing critics who thought it was time for the "old man" to retire. Martinson crafted an ERA of 2.79 as he won 16 games, dropped 11, fanned 146 and gave up 82 walks in 226 innings of work. He received 21 first place votes out of a possible 28. It's Alex Language, this year's South Charles Association Vim! Pitcher Award selection. This blossoming hurler wowed fans, peers and sportswriters with a fabulous performance. Language compiled a 17-7 record in 32 starts, tallied 168 strikeouts in 222.2 innings and recorded a 2.79 ERA. Other clubs managed only a .222 batting average against him. He received 28 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Hot Lips Houlihan of the Glowing Sea Radscorpions finished second in voting, while Macho Lopez of the Diamond City Swatters finished third. He played in 108 games, compiling a .333 batting average with 135 hits, 10 home runs, 35 walks, and a .390 on-base percentage. Dillworth also chipped in 46 RBIs and scored 64 times. He was honored today by league officials as the 2317 Red Rocket Rookie Award winner. Hop put up some good numbers, including a .313 batting average and .344 on-base percentage, while racking up 30 home runs, 92 RBIs and 105 runs scored. He received 28 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Adavald Vigilant of the Quincy Granites finished second in voting, while Kevin Cauthen of the Jamaica Plain Red Rockets finished third. But he certainly seems to be a quick study, as the Malden Grognaks reliever was better than all others this year and has captured the 2317 North Charles Association Fallon's Reliever Award. "I hope to win this a few more times before all is said and done in my career," the East Hartford, Connecticut native said. For the season, Noza had 3 saves in 51 relief appearances, which totaled 52.1. He fanned 49 betters, while walking 16 and put up a record of 2-2 to go with his 2.24 ERA. He received 28 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Jerry Lee Fireballs of the Easy Town Assaultrons finished second in voting, while Hunter Kim of the Lexington Synths finished third. The Glowing Sea Radscorpions reliever turned in a dominant campaign and has been named the South Charles Association Fallon's Reliever Award winner for 2317. His award-winning season saw the bullpen ace get 6 saves in 47 relief appearances, 37 strikeouts in 55.2 innings and only 33 walks. He had a record of 2 wins and 1 loss to go with his 1.62 ERA. "I hope I can pitch like this every year," he said. He received 21 first place votes out of a possible 28. He kept it short and sweet in the press conference as he accepted the award. "Thanks, but it wasn't just me out there this season." The Assaultrons finished the regular season in first place in the North Charles Association Brotherhood League with a 81-49 record. SCA Manager - Woody Lumpkin stepped before the microphone today and accepted his South Charles Association Manager of the Year award, thanking the whole Glowing Sea Radscorpions organization for making the 2317 season such a success. Lumpkin struggled to find the right words. "My father was a drill instructor in the military. He taught me that you have to work hard, set goals and accept responsibility for your actions. That's what the entire Glowing Sea organization did this year. My dedicated owner, coaching staff, hard-working and talented players and loyal front office all made this award possible. I thank them for it." And what a year it was. Lumpkin sparked the Radscorpions to a 87-43 record and a first in the South Charles Association Railroad League standings. NCA Positional Hitters - The North Charles Association BosCom Positional Hitter Award for 2317 has been awarded to those players that showed standout offensive performances in the past year. The winners are: Pitcher Scooter Yaghmour (Cambridge Coursers) .310/.311/.408, 71 AB, 1 HR, 58 wRC+, 0.0 WAR Catcher Red Jay Jones (Sunshine Tidings Chemists) .362/.416/.624, 417 AB, 30 HR, 3 SB, 157 wRC+, 5.2 WAR First Baseman Two Shoes Rivera (Concord Radstags) .340/.394/.591, 486 AB, 29 HR, 23 SB, 158 wRC+, 5.4 WAR Second Baseman Jack of Diamonds Cordero (Malden Grognaks) .347/.417/.581, 458 AB, 22 HR, 1 SB, 166 wRC+, 6.8 WAR Third Baseman Jacob Tarberry (Malden Grognaks) .337/.396/.575, 499 AB, 26 HR, 1 SB, 159 wRC+, 6.1 WAR Shortstop Gavin Deux-Gas (The Slog Ghouls) .331/.391/.562, 504 AB, 27 HR, 34 SB, 106 R, 149 wRC+, 6.6 WAR Left Fielder Bubbler Mayhem (Cambridge Coursers) .327/.364/.552, 504 AB, 24 HR, 4 SB, 139 wRC+, 3.6 WAR Center Fielder Eden Babz (Easy Town Assaultrons) .317/.389/.525, 448 AB, 21 HR, 93 SB, 135 wRC+, 6.8 WAR Right Fielder Jim Geiger (Cambridge Coursers) .324/.423/.520, 481 AB, 15 HR, 55 SB, 103 R, 148 wRC+, 6.3 WAR SCA Positional Hitters - The South Charles Association BosCom Positional Hitter Award is a coveted award that goes to the player at each position with the strongest offensive performance in the past year. The winners for 2317 are: Pitcher Buzzcut McDonald (Southie Brews) .279/.318/.295, 61 AB, 42 wRC+, -0.2 WAR Catcher Phantom Vargas (Vault 81 Dwellers) .317/.413/.552, 366 AB, 21 HR, 14 SB, 155 wRC+, 5.1 WAR First Baseman Honker Trinkl (Roxbury Rad Sox) .317/.393/.611, 470 AB, 28 HR, 3 SB, 158 wRC+, 4.8 WAR Second Baseman Lee Mayhew (Atom Cats) .324/.436/.538, 442 AB, 15 HR, 26 SB, 160 wRC+, 7.2 WAR Third Baseman Tre' Morgueman (Jamaica Plain Red Rockets) .337/.414/.652, 466 AB, 35 HR, 30 SB, 101 R, 112 RBI, 7.5 WAR Shortstop Rock Rampage (University Point Deathclaws) .331/.392/.540, 474 AB, 22 HR, 29 SB, 142 wRC+, 6.1 WAR Left Fielder Adavald Vigilant (Quincy Granites) .282/.393/.506, 358 AB, 19 HR, 15 SB, 144 wRC+, 2.8 WAR Center Fielder Jay Gabby (Jamaica Plain Red Rockets) .331/.391/.545, 453 AB, 19 HR, 46 SB, 151 wRC+, 5.4 WAR Right Fielder Pockets Wrench (Vault 81 Dwellers) .334/.391/.544, 476 AB, 24 HR, 142 wRC+, 4.6 WAR NCA Defenders - Making the play is the mark of great defenders. Spearing a liner, diving in the hole or crashing headlong into the wall makes no difference to these awe-inspiring fielders. Magicians they sometimes appear to be, showing up out of nowhere to rob a batter of a hit and to turn a hit into an out. Pitchers love 'em and batters curse 'em. These defensive wizards will collect their 2317 North Charles Association Corvega Top Defender Awards tonight: Pitcher Lacky Luster (Nahant Celtics) Catcher Clownie Blammo (Cambridge Coursers) First Baseman Two Shoes Rivera (Concord Radstags) Second Baseman Cool Papa Cornwell (Starlight Killers) Third Baseman Bruce Spring (Starlight Killers) Shortstop Peter Pan Calvillo (Sunshine Tidings Chemists) Left Fielder Javid Young (Nordhagen Beach Party Boys) Center Fielder Miky Mytook (Nordhagen Beach Party Boys) Right Fielder Wee Wee Reese (Bunker Hill 75ers) SCA Defenders - Defense is a critical element in the game of baseball. Many times late in the game, a light-hitting defensive specialist will be inserted in place of a superstar hitter. Good defenders are worth their weight in gold and today the best of them for 2317 have been recognized. These players will receive the South Charles Association Corvega Top Defender Award: Pitcher Heaven Fontenot (Diamond City Swatters) Catcher Crass Brad Crusty (Goodneighbor Hancocks) First Baseman Duncan MacCready (FHE Yao Guai) Second Baseman Tuft Davis (Egret Ninjas) Third Baseman Tre' Morgueman (Jamaica Plain Red Rockets) Shortstop Poncho Picasso (Glowing Sea Radscorpions) Left Fielder Alloy Jordan (Glowing Sea Radscorpions) Center Fielder Jurgen Windcaller (Oberland T-51s) Right Fielder Earthbound Bussey (Oberland T-51s)

October 2317
BNN Report News from the CBO, Minors, CCBL, and CYL by Nat Wright-Kawolski 29 October 2317 Draft Preview 4 We are just a week away from the 2317 Rookie Draft with all 28 teams looking one last time of what is available to improve their teams in 2317 and beyond. This week, we are going to look at the high school-aged players of the Commonwealth Youth League with some more players that scouts believe will be regulars in the CBO, though they are currently scattered around in talent and expectations for the draft. Without further adieu, let's look at 10 players worth watching. 10 Youth Players to Watch: 1. C Daniel Bowler, Lewiston Raiders, Projected: Nordhagen Beach, 2(7) We left off Bowler and #2 Malina below from the top 80 potential earners because we had them rated just a little bit lower. As you can see in the mock results, those rankings compared to talent potential can be far different. For Bowler, the three-year starter was a force but still needs to develop a lot before he is CBO ready. Scouts believe that he can be one of the better hitting catchers, should he stay at that position. He has a large frame for blocking wild pitches, but he struggles to throw out runners on the bases. That could lead to him converting to 1B or trying to be developed as a corner outfielder. 2. C Rad Malina, Hampton Tailors, Projected: Oberland, 1(17) Malina has good all-around hitting potential, though he is not expected to ever reach star status. He actually had quite a dropoff in hitting success in 2317 compared to 2316, leading some scouts to doubt his long-term development. Malina hit .421 in 2316 before dropping to a career-low .269 in 2317. That is quite a dropoff. Defensively, Malina is OK as a catcher but is never expected to be more than mid-tier defensively. 3. SP Wayne Bruce, Coventry Quads, Projected: Jamaica Plain, 2(26) Claiming he came from a family of caps, Bruce jumped into the spotlight in his senior campaign for the Quads, collecting an impressing 10-2 record with a 2.59 ERA in 13 starts. He really impressed scouts by recording 126 strikeouts in 97.1 innings pitched. While none of those numbers put him on a CYL leaderboard, it did show growth and high future potential. Scouts think Bruce will be one of the top control pitchers, capable of keeping hitters off balance with his array of fastball, curve, and sinker with the occasional screwball sprinkled in. 4. LF Shalvey O’Doherty, Haverhill Detectives, Projected: Spectacle Island, 1(10) Scouts think O'Doherty will be selected in the Top 10 of the draft, partially due to a frame they think will lead to lots of home runs in the future. O'Doherty is 6'6" and growing into his current 185-pound frame. Should he add more muscle, the team drafting him could plant him in RF and hit him 4th. He will get plenty of time in Rookie ball or A to develop that power and will probably climb the ranks pretty fast. 5. 3B Candy Yegammai, Andrew Station Southies, Vault 81, 2(13) Yegammai is all potential but has little to show for it in his CYL career, playing in only 10 games in 2317 and 16 in 2316. While OSA has him going in the 2nd round, it is curious to see if teams shy away from him after his series of injuries, including injuries to his back, oblique, and ankle. Should he see the field regularly, scouts believe Yegammai is blessed with a great combination of contact and power potential, which could see him making frequent All-Star appearances. In the meantime, he will get a chance to hone his skills in Rookie ball or maybe in the BMU (A). 6. SP Wing Kawolski, Old Lyme Lake Monsters, Projected: 1(22) There is a special place in my heart for a Kawolski taking the mound. It may be that my husband was a pitching Kawolski. Or it could be that this pitching Kawolski, my second-born son, is in talks to join the CBO. While his senior year was shortened due to injury, Kawolski showed that he is one of the better control pitchers in the draft. He had a solid fastball, and he is expected to develop his changeup into another effective pitch. He needs to work a lot more on his other pitchers, his splitter and curve, to stay as a starter. If not, he could develop into a top reliever or even a closer at the next level. 7. CF Walker Cress, Plum Island Candymen, Projected: Lexington, 1(24) Cress projects into the 1st round, and this one may make the most sense of our 10 players featured for where he is picked to go. He would be a great addition to the Lexington franchise, too, though he is not quite there. For scouts, they see him as an extra bases machine, highlighted in part by 33 of his 57 hits in 2317 being extra bases. While his home run power may not be one of the top in the draft, Cress hit 25 homers in 2317. He should also be a decent defensive left fielder. 8. RF Connie Ryan, Holyoke Mech Dragons, Projected: Roxbury, 4(9) Ryan is tall at 6'10" and may end up at 1B because of his height. He is also great at controlling his bat and getting it on just about everything. Scouts think that he can be a great OBP prospect, not because he is patient at the plate, but because he can foul off 10 pitches in a row to keep at bats alive. He was consistent in his batting average, hitting .395, .376, and .376 the past three seasons, though his home run numbers were low. 9. 2B Alvin Dark, Sandwich Screamers, Projected: Starlight, 4(16) Dark has been a prospect we have watched for a while. In fact, we remembered that we featured him (16 February 2314) among other familiar names as the 5th ranked on incoming freshmen. While scouts think Dark will go in the 4th round, we think that teams are making a mistake by bypassing him. Dark hit 36 homers (12th-best single season performance) in 2317 to go with a .488 average and a 6.75 WAR, a CYL single-season record. He also set the single-season record for OPS at 1.814, breaking Diamond Ball's 17-year-old record. Dark is a good 2B and could be a decent SS. He may get work at either the A or AA level in 2317. 10. 3B King Fish Davenport, South Charles Bank Moonies, Starlight 1(16) Since we just looked at our freshman list, we see that Davenport was #2 overall. He still may be there, especially in the scouts' view that he will go 16th overall after a nice career with the Moonies. Scouts love his combination of contact and power and think he is destined to hit 3rd in a CBO lineup. He played 3B in the CYL but will probably convert to 1B where he can focus more on hitting. The one potential red flag in Davenport's game and where he will need to be coached up more is with his eye. He has the propensity to swing away at bad pitches, which could lead to a ton of strikeouts and weak contact. The Freshman 10 in 2314 Here is that list of the top freshmen in 2314 with the expected potential and draft grade listed by OSA: 1. SP Talley O'Reilly, Rockport Seafarers - 78, 1(7) 2. 1B King Fish Davenport, South Charles Bank Moonies - 74, 1(16) 3. LF Grady Holster, Wareham Comets - 67, 3(22) 4. RF Shalvey O'Doherty, Haverhill Detectives - 77 1(10) 5. SS Alvin Dark, Sandwich Screamers - 71, 4(16) 6. 2B Pond LeHockey, Hester Mechanists - 80, 3(24) 7. 1B Booger McTarberry, Taunton Giants - 55, 3(13) 8. RF Connie Ryan, Holyoke Mech Dragons - 75, 4(9) 9. 1B Kevin Gordon, Gloucester Dog Trainers - 64, Not in top 5 rounds 10. LF Lil Baby Davis, Concord Iceboys - 57, Not in top 5 rounds
