May 1954 The Tigers went 19-7 in May and continue to pound the AL. They were 30-7 before ever facing the A's or Yankees. On May 17th, Detroit traveled to Philly and lost 2-of-3 games, and all three finals were 1-run scores. They then won 2-of-3 at home against the Yankees. After sweeping the Orioles in Baltimore, Detroit then won 2-of-3 at home against the A's. So, in their first meetings with New York and Philly, the Tigers went 5-4. The Yanks and A's will have to do a lot better than that to make up ground on the already large 10-game lead the Tigers have. The Cardinals went 16-11 in May, and the Cubs went 16-10 to move into 2nd place. The Reds and Giants have had surprising starts, and they are in 3rd and 4th places respectively. The Pirates, however, had a terrible 8-19 month, dropping them to 7th place and 9.5-games back. Their pitching staff has been terrible with a 4.88 ERA that ranks as the worst in the NL. Martin Gwaltney is 6-6 with a 3.52 ERA, but the most frightening news is the fact that Cotton Simson went 1-6 with a 6.53 ERA in May. After a respectable 4-1 start with a 3.06 ERA in April, Simson has imploded. Some say it is a sign of decline in the 38-year-old star, but his backers point to one bright spot in May - a lone victory that came on May 20th when he allowed just 1 unearned run and only 2 hits over 8.2 IP against the 1st place Cardinals. That win gave him 299 for his career and cause for some optimism that the old pro still has it. In The News May 20: The Phillies apologized to RF Walter Davis for having him followed by Charles Leland, a detective. Phils owner Robert Carpenter, suspecting that some players were not ready physically and mentally, had hired Leland to follow them. Davis noticed Leland and reported him to the police, who promptly arrested the detective. American League-Pitcher of the Month: Lex Tjeenk-Willink (CLE)! He had a record of 5-2 in 7 games started, with an ERA of 2.35. American League-Batter of the Month: Matt Perly (DET)! He batted .323 in 99 AB, with 9 homers and 32 RBI. National League-Pitcher of the Month: Grady Ingram (STL)! He had a record of 6-0 in 7 games started, with an ERA of 1.96. National League-Batter of the Month: Ted McMurray (CIN)! He batted .365 in 104 AB, with 12 homers and 27 RBI. Code:

WEB PAGES UPDATED... INCLUDING PLAYER PAGES
June 1954 The season is just halfway over, but it is looking grim for most of the AL as the Tigers keep trucking along. They went 19-9 in June, including a 7-5 record against their top competition - New York, Philadelphia and Cleveland. The Tigers have had some concerns about the two-time defending AL POY Corky Stell after he followed up a 1-1, 4.04 performance in May with a 2-3, 5.79 stinker in June. Somewhat lost in the amazing lead the Tigers have gained are some great personal performances. First, Luther Ormiston and Dave Castaneda, .280 and .274 career hitters respectively, are both hitting well over .300. Ormiston, after a disappointing 1953 season to coming off a 1952 BOY season, is leading the team (and 2nd in the AL) with a .344 average. Matt Perly, who joined the elite 40-HR club last season, is continuing to build his legacy as the best power-hitting second baseman of all-time. He leads the majors with 26 homeruns and 87 RBI, putting him on pace for 51 homeruns and 172 RBI, both which would be new AL records. Teammate John Degal, who broke out with a career year last season at age 25, is out to set new career marks. He is right behind Perly with 25 homers and 82 RBI, putting him on pace for 49 HR and 162 RBI. The major league record for RBI in a season is 156 set by HOF'er Oscar Vancini in 1939. The thought of not one but two players breaking that record in the same season and on the same team is mindboggling. Fans of offense beware when the Senators and White Sox lock horns! On May 8th, Washington's young phenom Lukas Dietrich tied a major league record with 15 striekouts on the day, but he lost thanks to his opponent, Johnny Gordley (yes, he of the 55 losses the past 2 1/2 seasons), tossing a 2-hit shutout. Dietrich's performance is just the 2nd 15-K game in major league history, and oddly enough, the only other one was also thrown by a Senator, Dave "The Shepard" McBean in 1907. However, McBean pitched 13.2 innings in his outing, while Dietrich accomplished the feat in just 7.2 innings. View the box score here Just one season after Washington set a major league record with 108 losses, the White Sox seem determined to set a new record. Chicago is currently on pace for a 40-112 season. Washington is not faring much better, on pace for a 47-107 record. The White Sox had a horrible 4-23 record in June, and two of those 4 wins came against the Senators. With 3 months left to play, Chicago already finds themselves 38-games behind Detroit. The Cubs went 17-12 to pull ahead of St. Louis in the NL standings. The two teams went 3-3 against each other this month, but earlier in the month, the Cardinals lost 2-of-3 to the Giants and then were swept by Philadelphia. After sweeping the Giants in 3, St. Louis then dropped 3-of-4 to Cincinnati. That stretch helped the Cubs move up. These two teams do not play again until after the all-star break on July 22-24, and they will not see each other again until August 30th. But from that date until the end of the regular season, the Cubs and Cards play 10 of their final 25 games against each other. After a rocky month of May, Pittsburgh's Cotton Simson became the 15th pitcher to record 300 wins when he allowed just 1 run over 8.2 IP against the Braves in Milwaukee on June 2nd. In his next start, Simson allowed just 1 run to the Dodgers for his 301st win. He was roughed up in his next start against the Reds, but his next three starts were solid performances, allowing 8 runs (1 unearned) over 24.1 IP, but he drew a no decision and two losses. In his final start of June, he allowed 5 runs in 9 innings against the Braves but still collected his 302nd career win. View the box score here In The News June 1: After a frustrating start to the season for the Dodgers, reliever Merl Welsh coughed up 2 runs to the Braves in the bottom of the 9th for a 7-6 loss. The inning started when pinch hitter Ken Pazik reached base on an error by LF John Cirillo. Then Cognac Allen beat out a bunt for a single. An obviously frustrated Welsh then gave up the game-tying single to Bonnard Shadle. After a visit to the mound by pitching coach Frank Smith, Welsh seemed to settle down, getting slugger Ken Chaucer to ground out to 2nd for out 1. With runners now at the corners, 3B Buck "Go-Go" Tomlinson hit a fly ball to right field for out 2, but Dave Wuerstle's throw home was poor and Allen scored the winning run. On his way back to the dugout, Welsh threw Tomlinson's discarded bat in disgust. The bat inadvertently went into the stands, injuring a spectator. American League-Pitcher of the Month: Adam Sardina (CLE)! He had a record of 5-1 in 7 games started, with an ERA of 2.34 and 1 shutouts. American League-Batter of the Month: Matt Perly (DET)! He batted .330 in 97 AB, with 10 homers and 37 RBI. National League-Pitcher of the Month: Edgar Weingarten (CHN)! He had a record of 8-0 in 8 games started, with an ERA of 2.27. National League-Batter of the Month: Bobby Johnson (CHN)! He batted .359 in 103 AB, with 4 homers and 23 RBI. Code:

Ok, another one of the things I notice about player pictures. Matt, do you try to avoid using pictures of legends? I mean, look at Doug Williams:
http://www.southernbaseball.com/twb/p229.html His picture is this: ![]() Kind of hard to lose yourself in the TWB universe, no? No one will ever be able to buy Doug Williams as a real, distinct person. Seems like we should edit out these pictures. Last edited by DamnYankees; 04-15-2005 at 03:33 PM. |

Ted Williams picture is being used. This was just brought up the other day.
Anyway, I think it's better when it's a no-name guy. That way we can associate the TWB player with a face, rather than the face with whoever it really is. I think you take this stuff way too seriously DamnYankees. Last edited by Vris; 04-15-2005 at 03:50 PM. |

Who's using Ted Williams? I never noticed it. This just seems like a really easy thing to do, and I guess I figure its worth it.

Joe DiMaggio & Bob Gibson are in too.
Do you really think I've gone all this time & not noticed these photos? Mantle was a request. |

> Do you really think I've gone all this
> time & not noticed these photos? > Mantle was a request. It was a request by me. My father actually did (and does/would) look like Mick. Very similar age as well. I think I've told the story of friends of mine, when getting into baseball card collecting in the mid-70s, running across Mick's cards for the first time, saying to me, "Wow... Mickey Mantle looks like Mr. Williams." So I made the request. As a player, he was "created" to play like Joe Gordon rather than Mick, since my father played 2B through high school and into the military. John |

On the notion of whether people will ever be able to buy Doug Williams as a real, distinct person... I think the TWB player just isn't going to put up the numbers that Mick did. Kress is more of our Mick & Ted Williams. Perhaps Stewart will turn into a bit of Mick as well.
TWB players always seem to be able to "grow" into their own personas, and through our writing and rambling about them, spring into life. John |

Question. Are Matt and Johnny Perly related? I don't remember a discussion on this. Are they both ancestors?
Hm, now that I check the ancestor list, it appears they are related, most likely brothers. Brings up an interesting question: What's the best baseball family in TWB? Who are the best brothers? I think the Perly's have to get mentioned in that convo. The Allen's I think have been too diluted...interesting question. |

Matt, just had a thought about CatoBase. You said it wouldn't calculate win shares? Have you tried checking the 0 IP/ +0 ER flaw? This is the most common thing that prevents win shares from being calculated, and its very simple to fix.
For those who don't know, just open the main database file in Catobase, and sort all players according to IP. If any of them have 0 IP, but more than 0 runs allowed, there is your problem. Just edit the IP for that, or those, players up to 1, and it should work. This has probably been brought up before, but I thought I'd check. |
