This is kinda intresting:
Moe Lutske looked he would finally bag is long desired AL Batting Crown this year, getting out of the gate with a .439 clip in April. Then he "slumped" down to a .333 BA for May, taking his season total to .383. And out of nowhere, Matt Praks hit .400 in May to boost his season average to .370. At the end of June, it was .372 vs. .372. So Moe cranked up his game to an entirely different level to start July - .500 (19/38) to push his BA back up to .386. Praks? Answered going 20/37 (.541) to push his up to .393. It would be something of these two could go toe-to-toe and inspire each other up above .400. Should they slow down, two time BA Champ Ray Kress lurks back with a .359 BA... and a .511 OBP. I believe that the all-time single season OBP mark is .520 by Woody in 1914. John |

And another sad Braves story in "Buzzard" Getchell. Could've been a great one.
John, I know Chaucer has been excellent. But I can't justify anyone in the HOF without a championship. How can you be one of the best, when you never were at the pinnacle of your profession? |

So which is more important: team accomplishment, or individual accomplishment? Not regarding HOF status, but in the general sense of the sport.

In the general sense, I'd say team accomplishment.
Making the Hall of Fame, however, is an individual accomplishment. Championships are a point in a player's favor, but I don't believe they should keep a player out of the Hall if he doesn't have one. Chaucer has been one of the best hitters -- if not the best -- in the National League for years. I can't see how he shouldn't make the Hall of Fame if he keeps up his level of play for another few years.

I agree, and I will argue for his incusion until I'm blue in the face. When I see two similar players and have to take one over the other, I usually lean towards the won with more championships.
Chaucer may be a "lock", but what about Scottie Allen? Maybe the W/L isn't there, but the peripherals are. |

Would you exclude Cotton Simson from the HOF? I hope not. He's never won a WS (although he did appear in one - 1946, our initial live season. The Browns never lived up to the potential exposed that year).

All right, maybe I'm too harsh. Maybe championships shouldn't be the "first" factor, but the "last", deciding factor. Obviously Simson has been one of the Top 5 of all time, but all of the one's above him won at least one:
Lee -- 2 ('37, '41) Allen -- 1 ('31) Smith -- 2('39, '43) Murphy -- 1 ('20) Lopresto -- 1* ('23) *-Cato doesn't have any of his earlier stuff A championship certainly wouldn't hurt him. |

> And to Chris' defense, he didn't
> kill the TWB site. I was editing > in the CatoBase link & missed > 1 character in the code. That's just one of our standard TWB cliche's: If the TWB site is down, blame Chris. If you can't get fair value for your talent in a trade, blame the biased media for ripping your player! :P John |

He actually was injured and missed the 1915 and 1924 World Series that the Cards lost. I would bounce Allen and replace him with Raymond Gindler. Gindler didn't win a World Series, but that largely was because there wasn't a Series in 1901, 1902 and 1904 when his team won the AL. > A championship certainly wouldn't hurt him. It would be an interesting question: Who is the best player in TWB history never to win a World Title. Probably Rabbi Baum, followed by Dale Lamberty? Tyke Walls never even played in a World Series. Actually, if a player is on a number of pennant winners that's good enough for me. Winning a best of 7 crap shoot in some ways isn't as impressive as grinding it out over 154 games.
Two equal players? Yes then Championships come into play, but I'm also not going to elevate a lesser player just because he was on teams with great players. |
